Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia is one of the strongest and most broadly based life science departments in Canada, with a scope that spans from molecules to cells, whole organisms, populations, and communities. It is home to approximately forty highly funded, well-equipped research groups that are roughly equally distributed among four overlapping research clusters: evolutionary biology, ecology and conservation biology, comparative physiology, and cell, genetics and developmental biology , with many strong interdisciplinary connections among them. The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC). Program Funding Packages

The Department of Zoology has a minimum funding policy for all Graduate students. Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .

Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement .

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

The study of zoology is an exploration of how animals have evolved, how they function, and the ways in which they interact with their environment. This programme provides students with the opportunity to conduct research on animal anatomy, physiology, behaviour, ecology, evolution, and conservation, to help us better understand the amazing diversity of animal life on Earth.

Students benefit from training courses provided by the University aimed at developing key skills in research. Under the guidance and advice of their academic supervisors, students can develop their ability to effectively communicate their research and thesis.

Beyond learning how to conduct research and the specialist skills that students are expected to develop within their subject discipline, the process of studying for a research degree can provide transferable skills in problem-solving, time management, independent and team work, and communication.

How You Study

This research programme relies on independent study and research, supervised by an advisory panel of academic staff. The nature of this research will be specific to the subject area, but is expected to investigate a novel question and provide a novel contribution to science.

Due to the nature of postgraduate research programmes, the majority of time is spent in independent study and research, but you might also attend seminars and other research activities. Students will have meetings with their academic supervisor at least once a month, but the precise frequency of these will vary depending on in-dividual requirements, subject area, staff availability, and stage of programme.

Research Groups and Topics

Research within the Department of Life Sciences is conducted within five research groups. The key to success on a postgraduate research programme is to find a research topic that you are passionate about and identify a supervisory team that has expertise in this area. The first thing that all prospective students should do is directly contact a member of staff from one of these areas that you feel is best aligned with your chosen research area to discuss the application process further.

Animal Behaviour, Cognition, and Welfare

This group comprises a team of internationally-renowned researchers working at the forefront of, and interface between, animal behaviour, cognition, health, and welfare.

This group pursues a collaborative approach to increase understanding of disease characteristically associated with ageing at the molecular level, to improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

This research group works to understand the evolution and ecology of populations, species, and communities, across all levels of biological organisation, from genes through to ecosystems.

This group is working to answer fundamental questions relating to the characterisation, evaluation, and testing of microorganisms and viruses.

How you are assessed

Students will have at least one formal meeting with their supervisors each month where progress will be discussed. After three months students are expected to provide an outline of their research proposal, which will be evaluated.

The MSc by Research is awarded based on the quality of the student's thesis and their ability to present and successfully defend their research to a panel of examiners. They are expected to demonstrate how their research findings have contributed to knowledge, or developed existing theory or understanding.

To find out more about postgraduate research study in life sciences, you can contact our postgraduate research leads Dr Jenny Dunn and Dr Tom Pike. Both have broad research interests within animal behaviour and ecology.

Jenny's research mainly focuses on understanding the drivers and impacts of parasite infection, mostly in wild birds. Tom is primarily interested in the evolution and maintenance of visual and olfactory signals, from the perspective of both the signallers and the receivers.

To support your experience within the postgraduate research community, new students are encouraged to enrol in October or January. In addition to meeting peers across the University who are starting their research programme at the same time, there is access to a central training programme designed around the first three months of study, and targeted support aligned to each stage of the postgraduate research journey.

However, applications are welcome at any point throughout the year, and enrolment can also take place at any relevant point. Alternative enrolment dates should be agreed with your supervisors on an individual basis.

First or upper second class honours degree in a relevant subject.

Course Information

The MSc Zoo Conservation Biology programme is run in close collaboration with Chester Zoo and is designed to produce graduates who would like to develop careers in the research and conservation of captive populations. The course features a strong numerical and research-oriented approach – highly specialised and sought-after skills as you embark on your career.     The core Zoo Conservation unit is studied at Chester Zoo and features guest lectures from Zoo practitioners. There is also an option to choose between a field course or placement unit. You can choose between field courses in Europe (eg the Białowieża forest in Poland or the Mediterranean environment in France), Turkey or Tanzania in East Africa. If you choose the placement unit, you can carry out a 3-month placement at a UK Zoo or aquarium which we’ll help you secure, ensuring it is best suited to your career and research aspirations.     The course benefits from its unique partnership with Chester Zoo and is taught by a large community of research active staff and zoo professionals. This ensures that our course content is relevant to current conservation practices and helps to grow your professional network; enhancing not just your specialist knowledge, but your future career prospects as well.

Furthermore, we are home to one of the UK’s only university-based Amphibian Conservation Research Facilities which works with zoos nationwide to determine the best way to conserve amphibians in captivity and halt their ongoing decline. So, even when studying on our Manchester Met campus, you’ll work alongside world-leading researchers to answer some of the most pressing questions in conservation. These on-site facilities make it easy for you to put theory into practice, a career-focused approach that gives you unrivalled real-world experience.    MSc student research projects    Most students carry out their research projects at a zoo, aquarium or similar institutions. The projects are often directly aligned with staff research projects or topics may be suggested by the host institutions. They may cover aspects of animal welfare, ecology, behaviour, genetics, anatomy and physiology.     There may also be the possibility of carrying out your project overseas. For example, several students have been working on captive bear welfare and management in Cambodia.  

You’ll study seven core units and have an option between including either the Conservation Field Course unit or a placement. You will also complete an in-depth masters dissertation.  

Zoo Conservation

This unit will be delivered in collaboration with Chester Zoo and will examine the role of the modern zoo, with an emphasis on ex-situ and in-situ conservation. It will give an overview of key scientific, legal and legislative, ethical and commercial issues involved in zoo management, and provide you with an awareness of the complexity, scope and inter-relationships involved in zoological conservation. It will also provide information on core husbandry practices, such as record keeping, behavioural monitoring, nutrition and training.  

Statistics and Research Design

On this unit you will design scientific studies and correctly interpret research output. You'll be introduced to a broad range of the statistical tools used by scientists, from formulating hypotheses, choosing the appropriate statistical test and collecting and presenting the data ready for dissemination. In this series of lectures and computer practicals, we will discuss approaches to experimental design and analysis using the modern statistical software R.

Practical Techniques and Analysis in Zoo Conservation

An introduction is provided to the essential techniques for the collection and analysis of data needed for advanced studies within conservation and behaviour. Indicative techniques may include Geographical Information Systems (GIS), behavioural recording in lab and field, census methods using Distance Sampling, analysing species distributions, video and sound analysis, camera trapping and social network analysis. As well as investigating aspects of study design and use of relevant technology, the unit will also provide experience in specialist software and analysis techniques. 

Genetics for Conservation Management

Within the context of population genetics, this unit will introduce the application of molecular genetics tools to a range of problems in conservation biology, ecology, and evolutionary biology. You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, and data analysis practicals. Particular emphasis will be placed on the applied use of genetic and genomic technologies for in-situ and ex-situ conservation and population management, through exploring real-life case studies and the primary scientific literature.

Zoo Conservation Biology Research Dissertation

This unit allows you to undertake a novel research project in the area of Zoo Conservation Biology. You’ll be introduced to project management methodology, developing a critical awareness and insight into relevant theoretical and applied aspects of your subject area. You will then practice the skills of research design, analysis and communication through the written presentation of their research, in the format of a scientific paper. 

Bird Evolution, Behaviour and Conservation

This unit deals with the evolution, biology, behaviour and biogeography of birds. This includes an introduction to avian taxonomy and phylogeny; examining the evolution of avian communication and other life-history strategies; patterns of migration; quantifying anthropogenic threats and avian extinction risk; examining the impacts of climate change on avian behaviour evolution and conservation; as well as the race to save species from extinction. 

Biodiversity, Natural Capital and Ecosystem Services

Biodiversity loss is a major global challenge with over one million species on the brink of extinction from threats including land use change, over exploitation, climate change and pollution. Drawing on examples from around the world, such as savannah, forests, peatlands, and marine environments, this unit evaluates the latest techniques for assessing and monitoring biodiversity, natural capital and ecosystem services. 

Option units

Conservation field course.

You will apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the taught units in a Conservation Field Course. You’ll develop, execute, analyse and report on a small research project in the field. This unit includes a European based field trip (the cost of which is included in the course fees). You may be able to undertake the field course in other global settings subject to an additional fee. 

This is a three-month work placement option that can take place at any WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accredited zoo in the UK or overseas. Some institutions such as Chester Zoo and Knowsley Safari Park regularly offer a small number of placements that you can apply for. We also help you to apply to various other institutions and advise you on the suitability of placements which you arrange yourself. Please note, we cannot guarantee a placement at a specific institution. Placements usually take place from April onwards. 

Study and assessment breakdown

10 credits equates to 100 hours of study, which is a combination of lectures, seminars and practical sessions, and independent study. A masters qualification typically comprises of 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits and an MFA 300 credits. The exact composition of your study time and assessments for the course will vary according to your option choices and style of learning, but it could be:

  • Full-time 20% lectures, seminars or similar; 0% placement; 80% independent study
  • Part-time 20% lectures, seminars or similar; 0% placement; 80% independent study
  • Full-time 100% coursework; 0% practical; 0% examination

Placement options

You’ll need a UK honours degree – normally a 2:2 – or the international equivalent, in a relevant subject. We might also consider your application if you have several years’ professional experience in a related field.

Students who decide to take the Field Course unit will attend a residential field trip in Europe or Turkey which is included in the cost of the of the course fees. The residential field trip to Tanzania incurs an additional fee (approx. £2500). There may however be some additional costs for all overseas trips, such as the costs associated with getting travel visas. 

For your research project, you may decide to carry out fieldwork overseas - this would also incur additional costs.

On this course, you can choose between either a three-month work placement at a UK zoo or aquarium, or a field course. Students who decide to take the Placement Unit will be supported by the provision of a placement preparation training, the cost of which is included in the course fees. 

Manchester Met provides free travel insurance for students, in most cases, when they travel in connection with their programme of study, for example, placements, field trips, exchanges etc. However, students should also take out personal insurance cover for belongings as items such as mobile phones are not covered by this policy (may range between £20-50 depending on length and country of travel).

Students often choose to buy a laptop, and occasionally a printer, (prices may range from £200 - 700 depending on choice) but there are drop-in computer labs and printing facilities on campus and laptops for loan in the library. This is a course that can pave the way to a wide range of career paths and professional possibilities – including study at PhD level – and provides a route into animal management within captive populations.     Some of our graduates have gone into roles at organisations that include the Peak District National Park, BBC, RSPCA, Blackpool Zoo, Chester Zoo, Dallas Zoo in the USA and many more.      Careers support is available from the moment you join us, and for up to three years after you finish your course. Over 35,500 species are now threatened with extinction, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Current extinction rates are estimated to be up to 10,000 times higher than they would naturally be. There is an urgent need for skilled, forward-thinking conservation biologists who can help reverse this trend.

Our MSc Conservation Biology combines strong theoretical knowledge and practical abilities. You’ll explore the reasons why so many species are endangered and develop vital skills in the management of wildlife and environments. Building on a firm understanding of theory, you’ll find practical solutions to environmental management problems.

Practical challenges throughout

In the field and the laboratory alike, you’ll have the chance to hone your practical skills in everything from species identification to ecological surveys, sampling methods to statistical analyses.

Our facilities have recently been modernised to offer a first-rate learning environment. They include a glasshouse featuring plants from diverse habitats, an insectary housing many different species, and specialist laboratories. The latest addition to our facilities is our Aquatic Research Facility , which has been developed in collaboration with the Sealife Centre, Birmingham. We also have a student research lab where you will have a dedicated space to pursue your independent studies.

Exciting fieldwork in great locations

We bring theory to life with fascinating fieldwork opportunities. You’ll take full advantage of studying close to the stunning landscapes and diverse habitats of the Peak District National Park.

Conservation is a global priority so some students have ventured overseas to conduct their investigations. Our  Tropical Conservation Biology  module takes students to Costa Rica to explore primary and cloud rainforests. Students stay in a private research station that isn't accessible to the public, and is surrounded by primary and secondary rainforests with numerous trails that allow students to explore the rainforest safely.

Placement opportunities

To enhance your employability, the MSc includes an optional training-based placement. You’ll work with a host organisation such as a local authority, environmental consultancy, zoo or educational institution to experience ‘real world’ scenarios.

The focus of your placement will be on linking theory with practical investigations and problem-solving. You could find yourself exploring issues such as biodiversity, conservation, flood defence, or environmental contamination and remediation.

We have an Environmental Sustainability Research Centre which confronts the issues resulting from climate change, amongst other areas.

In a new venture, our Nature Connectedness Research Group, a multidisciplinary team working with Natural England and national conservation groups, helps to foster enthusiasm for the environment, promote wellbeing and encourage conservation action. A highlight of its work so far was the Nature Connections Festival, described by  BBC Springwatch  presenter Chris Packham as “a brilliant, imaginative, innovative and intelligent project”.

What you will study

This course is made up of three stages: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and MSc. Some optional modules are available in a distance learning format - if you choose one of these module you will study through distance learning and will access the module wholly online.

Please note:  International students are able to take the online modules in the autumn and spring only.

You’ll study modules such as:

  • Conservation Biology in Principle and Practice - You’ll look at the current state of the biosphere and the reasons why conservation biology is needed. You’ll study the wide range of problems that conservation biology needs to address from a theoretical perspective and contrast this with the realities of conservation biology in practice
  • Identification for Conservation Biology - In this module, you will examine the importance of individual species identification to conservation biology. You’ll consider the relative importance of different species to the conservation of ecosystems, exploring concepts including keystone species, indicator species and flagship species
  • Tropical Conservation Biology -  This module examines the broad spectrum of conservation issues as they relate specifically to terrestrial and aquatic habitats of the tropics. You'll be introduced to the current state of tropical biodiversity, evaluate the methods currently being used to protect these areas and consider the outcomes of existing conservation initiatives. The module includes a residential fieldtrip to the tropics that will allow students to explore, for themselves, some pressing conservation issues, using a problem-based learning approach
  • Analytical Methods for Ecologists  - During this module, you’ll become confident and proficient at applying basic univariate statistical analyses and basic multivariate visualisation and analysis methods. Towards the end of the module, you’ll learn about more sophisticated univariate analysis techniques to cope with more complex data structures. The module will also introduce you to the widely used analysis software ‘R’  

You’ll also choose two modules from the following:

  • Environmental Impact Assessment -  This module aims to develop a sound appreciation of the importance of conducting EIA, together with an understanding of the techniques by which this can be achieved. In conjunction with an appreciation of what is happening globally in relation to EIA. Also the environmental assessment of plans and programmes by SEA is considered
  • International Environmental Policy and Law - This module aims to develop a critical knowledge and understanding of environmental policy and environmental law and regulation used for the protection of the environment. Areas covered will range from principles of environmental policy, environmental policy instruments, international agreements, EU legislation, UK laws and regulatory bodies
  • Habitat Management -  This module looks at the ecological principles behind the management of habitats for their biodiversity. It takes a scientific evidence-based approach to habitat management, translating ecological theory into hands-on practical management
  • Ecological Surveying -  You’ll explore different approaches to surveys for ecology and conservation, including GPS surveying, GIS mapping, and the analysis and classification of freshwater and terrestrial habitats. You will also look at sampling methods and census techniques for a range of freshwater and terrestrial plant and animal groups
  • Practical Training-Based Placement Module  - This placement module is an opportunity for you to work with a host organisation, experience real world scenarios, and gain experience towards future employment. The module provides links between theory and problem-solving through practical applications. This will be achieved through investigation of current aspects of the environmental sector in a range of areas such as biodiversity, conservation, flood defence, and environmental contamination and remediation
  • Independent Scholarly Activity in Biosciences - In this triple module, you will plan, conduct, and present a piece of original research on a topic of your choice within the area of Conservation Biology. This is a major part of this course and can be designed to suit your individual interests. You will have the flexibility to research into a topic of your choice, so you can tailor it to meet your career aspirations. Previous students have researched areas such as ecological tipping-points of woodland butterflies, the effect of the diversity of hedgerow plants on insect diversity, the effects of urbanisation on bat ecology, and impacts of human habitation on lion distribution in Kenya.

How you will learn

You’ll be taught through lectures, guest lectures, workshops, practical sessions in the field and laboratory, and tutorials. There is also the opportunity to go on site visits.

The majority of modules are assessed by coursework rather than by exams. A wide range of assessment methods are used, from oral presentations and poster displays, to scientific and professional reports.

During this course you'll have the opportunity to go on fieldtrips, allowing you to gain first-hand practical experience and learn new skills, such as site surveying and species identification.

Work placements

Our course also gives you the opportunity to apply the theory you learn to a working environment. If you take the optional module 'Practical Training Based Placement Module, you will have the opportunity to complete work placements. Examples of organisations you might work with include: local authorities, industry, businesses, HE institutions, zoos, or  Environmental/ecological consultants.

Entry requirements

You will need an undergraduate degree (lower second or above) or equivalent in a relevant subject.

International students should have the above or an international equivalent. If English is not your first language, you will need to hold IELTS 6.0 or above.

2024/25 (august 2024 - july 2025).

Please note fees normally increase in line with inflation and the University's strategic approach to fees, which is reviewed on an annual basis. The total fee you pay may therefore increase after one year of study.

Our MSc equips you with a wide range of skills and knowledge in both biological conservation and environmental management. It could pave the way for rewarding roles in habitat management or environmental consultancy, with conservation agencies or with local or national government.

There are also opportunities to move into industry in roles which bridge environmental management with broader conservation issues – so you could pursue a career in areas such as waste management, energy efficiency or recycling.

Course summary

Our MSci Zoology course is recommended for students with ambitions to continue in zoological research who want additional experience and a competitive edge when applying for PhDs or research jobs.

Modern zoology is interdisciplinary and we believe that you need to be aware of the depth and breadth of animal biology, from the molecular to the ecological. Our zoology degree begins broadly and introduces more choice in years two and three.

You will have the freedom to tailor your course to your interests and to specialise or maintain breadth in your studies. The range of research and transferable skills you will learn will enhance your employability as a graduate.

The additional fourth year of the MSci contains advanced skills training and a substantial research project which is especially valuable for those aiming for a career in biological sciences.

We have outstanding facilities in our state-of-the-art Life Sciences Building and the School of Biological Sciences has a world-class reputation for animal behaviour research. Many of our lecturers are world-leading researchers in animal behaviour and sensory biology and lead internationally recognised field studies on wild animal populations.

This book includes the abstracts of all the papers presented at the International Symposium on Animal Science & Zoology, 10-13 July 2017, organized by the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER). In total 20 papers submitted by presenters coming from 15 different countries (Belgium, Benin, Cameroon, Chile, China, Israel, Lithuania, Mexico, Romania, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, UK and USA). The conference was organized into 8 sessions that included a variety of topic areas such as animal production, animal health and more. A full conference program can be found before the relevant abstracts. In accordance with ATINER’s Publication Policy, the papers presented during this conference will be considered for inclusion in one of ATINER’s many publications.

This book includes the abstracts of all the papers presented at the 2nd Annual International Symposium on Animal Science & Zoology (16-19 July 2018), organized by the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER).

The present study was conducted to investigate the morphometric characteristics of Mosquitofish populations (Gambusia holbrooki) in the Kashmar Region. For this purpose, 60 specimens of Mosquitofish (30 males and 30 females) were caught from Kashmar Region, Khorasan Razavi province (northeastern Iran) using Electrofishing.Twenty-nine morphometric characters were used for biometry in both sexes. Univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used for each morphometric character to evaluate the significant difference between the male and female populations. ANOVA revealed significant differences in 18 morphometric characters among studied populations. The results of this study could be taken to consider the male and female populations of G. holbrooki as stocks in Iran.
