Module 10 Course Project - PowerPoint Presentation Due

Module 10 Content

Course Competencies:

  • Incorporate professional values, attitudes, and expectations regarding ageism when caring for the older adult.
  • Outline the importance of advocating for older adults in management of their care.

Your supervisor provided some valuable feedback in response to your outline! They are excited to see the PowerPoint slideshow you are creating for your topic's in-service training. Having developed a number of presentations for in-services, your supervisor offered the following advice:

"When developing a slideshow, it's important to be mindful of how you layout your content. For an in-service presentation, the slides should present key points, be arranged logically, without extraneous information contributing to a cluttered look. The audience should get a lot of the content from listening to what you say, not just from reading the slides. Using the Speaker Notes feature in PowerPoint is a great way to include relevant details that you want to provide without overloading the slides."

Your supervisor wants you to work from your outline and prepare a visually appealing PowerPoint slideshow for the in-service presentation. They said it should:

  • Have a title slide.
  • Contain 6-10 content slides pertaining to the important content areas for your presentation topic.
  • Use the Speaker Notes feature in PowerPoint to reduce the amount of text that appears on the slides. (The Speaker Notes will contain the text that will guide what you say while presenting the slides.)
  • Be written using proper spelling/grammar.
  • Cite at least 2 credible references and present the sources in APA format on a References slide.

I am needing help with my Hypertension outline into a power point by tonight. Please help.

Hypertension More than 70 million Americans have High blood pressure also known as Hypertension accordingto Blue Cross Blue Shield. Hypertension is a leading cause of stroke, heart attack, kidney disease andother issues that can lead to death. Hypertension is one of the most important modifiable risk factorsfor cardiovascular disease and one of most of the largest contributors to morbidity and mortalityworldwide. (en.wikipedia.org). High blood pressure is a common condition that affects the body'sarteries. If you have high blood pressure, the force of the blood pushing against the artery walls isconsistently too high. The heart must work harder to pump blood. Blood pressure is measured inmillimeters of mercury (mm Hg). In general, hypertension is a blood pressure reading of 130/80millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or higher. (cdc.org). Hypertension is also asymptomatic and can goundetected for years. Therefore, it is important to raise awareness about this condition and itsconsequences.Hypertension • High blood pressure • JNC7 (Seventh Report of the Joint National Commission on the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure) - systolic pressure > 140 mm Hg and a diastolic pressure > 90 mm Hg - average of 2 or more accurate blood pressure measurements - taken during 2 or more contacts with a HCP Incidence of Hypertension "The Silent Killer" • 28-31% of the adult population of the U.S. has hypertension. Incidence is greater in southeastern U.S. and among African Americans.

• Primary hypertension - Not related to another process. Hypertension in and of itself. - 90-95% of this population with hypertension has primary hypertension. • Secondary hypertension - Related to another disease process/cause Factors Involved in the Control of Blood Pressure • ↑ sympathetic nervous system activity • ↑ reabsorption of NaCl and H2O by kidneys • ↑ activity of the rennin-angiotensin system • ↓ vasodilatation • Insulin resistance Manifestations of Hypertension • Usually, NO symptoms other than ↑ BP • Symptoms seen R/T organ damage seen late and are serious - Retinal and other eye changes - Renal damage - Myocardial infarction - Cardiac hypertrophy - Stroke Major Risk Factors • Hypertension • Smoking • Obesity • Physical inactivity

• Dyslipidemia • Diabetes mellitus • Microalbuminuria or GFR < 60 • Older age • Family history Patient Assessment• History and Physical • Laboratory tests - Urinalysis - Blood chemistry - Cholesterol levels • ECG JNC 7 Treatment Algorithm Special constatations - Target goal is 130/80 for the following - Persons with diabetes mellitus - chronic renal disease • reduced GFR or • elevated serum creatinine Lifestyle Modifications • Weight loss • Reduced alcohol intake • Educed sodium intake • Regular physical activity • Diet: high in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy

• DASH diets• Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension • proven to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and improve insulin sensitivity • Blood pressure control with the DASH diet is more than low salt or low sodium diet advice • based on an eating plan proven to lower blood pressure - fruits, vegetables - low-fat or nonfat dairy - Emphasizes whole grains and contains less refined grains compared with a typical diet - Rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, and fiber. Medical Management • Usually, initial medication treatment is a thiazide diuretic. • Low doses are initiated, and the medication dosage is increased gradually if blood pressure does not reach target goal. • Additional medications are added if needed. • Multiple medications may be needed to control blood pressure. • Lifestyle changes initiated to control BP must be maintained. Medication Therapy • Diuretic and related drugs - Thiazide diuretics - Loop diuretics - Potassium sparing diuretics - Aldosterone receptors blockers• Central alpha2-agonists and other centrally acting drugs • Beta-blockers • Beta-blockers with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity • Alpha and beta blockers • Vasodilators • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors • Angiotensin II antagonists • Calcium channel blockers - Non dihydropyridines - Dihydropyridines Nursing History and Assessment • History and risk factors

• Assess potential symptoms of target organ damage - Angina, shortness of breath, altered speech, altered vision, nosebleeds, headaches, dizziness, balance problems, nocturia - Cardiovascular assessment: apical and peripheral pulses • Personal, social, and financial factors that will influence the condition or its treatment Goals: • Patient understanding of disease process • Patient understanding of treatment regimen • Patient participation in self-care • Absence of complications Nursing Diagnoses • Knowledge deficit (regarding the relation of the treatment regimen and control of the disease process)• Noncompliance with therapeutic regimen (related to side effects of prescribed therapy) Interventions • Patient teaching • Lifestyle modifications • Support adherence to the treatment regimen • Consultation/collaboration • Follow-up care • Emphasize control rather than cure • Reinforce and support lifestyle changes • lifelong process Gerontologic Considerations • Noncompliance • Include family • Understanding of therapeutic regimen - Reading instructions - Monotherapy Hypertensive Crises • Hypertensive emergency - Blood pressure > 180/120 and must be lowered immediately to prevent damage to target organs

• Hypertensive urgency - Blood pressure is extremely high but no evidence of immediate or progressive target organ damage Hypertensive Emergency • Reduce BP 25% in first hour. • Reduce to 160/100 over 6 hours • Then gradual reduction to normal over a period of days. • Exceptions are ischemic stroke and aortic dissection. Medications • IV vasodilators: - sodium nitroprusside - Nicardipine - fenoldopam mesylate - Enalaprilat - nitroglycerin • Need very frequent monitoring of BP and cardiovascular status. Hypertensive Urgency • Patient requires close monitoring of blood pressure and cardiovascular status. • Assess for potential evidence of target organ damage. Medications • Fast-acting oral agents: - beta adrenergic blocker— labetalol - angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor— captopril - alpha2-agonist—clonidineIn conclusion, it affects 70 million people (about twice the population of California). Hypertension is along-term medical condition that can be managed with proper treatment and medication as prescribedby doctors. High blood pressure may also develop due to an individual's own lifestyle. Eating food withhigh cholesterol, taking too much salt and sugar and poor physical fitness are some of the factorsattributed to the development of hypertension. Therefore, it is an individual's responsibility to safeguardtheir own health by adopting a healthy lifestyle. This requires one to be disciplined and adhere to ahealthier diet whilst also doing regular physical exercise.
