Designed for certified teachers and literacy education professionals, the Master of Education in Reading Education equips you to develop a curriculum that cultivates fluency, enhances comprehension, and encourages development in learners at all levels of literacy.  This online reading and literacy master’s program is appropriate for teachers working with students from pre-kindergarten through grade twelve.

Offered through the  Mary Frances Early  College of Education , the University of Georgia’s online Master of Education in Reading Education with an emphasis on new and digital literacies is designed to educate teachers in ways that advance their students as readers in the broadest sense from printed materials to digital multimedia environments. This online reading specialist degree program is offered by the Language and Literacy Education Department, whose faculty is recognized nationally and internationally for their teaching and research.

How Long Does It Take To Earn An Online Master of Education In Reading Education? 

When the required sequence is followed, the program can be completed in two years.  This 100% online Master of Education in Reading Education degree program operates on a cohort model with a special focus on new and digital literacies. A minimum of 36 credit hours in a 12-course sequence is required, providing a strong core understanding of research-based literacy instruction, cultural and historical foundations, and research.  This core is augmented by four specialization courses focused on new and digital literacies.

Online Master of Education In Reading Education Admission Requirements

Students applying to The University of Georgia must be accepted by the  Graduate School . Persons holding a bachelor’s degree from any institution accredited by the proper regional accrediting association are eligible to apply for admission to the Graduate School. 

Applications are evaluated holistically, and recommendations for admission are based on an applicant’s qualifications, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and how these match with faculty interests, and the online Master’s In Reading Education program’s capacity. 

• A strong undergraduate GPA with the usual acceptance being 3.0 or higher.
• Two or more years of teaching experience, although candidates with less than two years of experience will be considered.

• Statement of Purpose  – Submit a one-page statement of purpose online to the Graduate School. The statement of intent should clarify the candidate’s relevant background, interests, and goals in relation to the program.
• Transcripts  – Upload unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended to the Graduate School application. Send official transcripts after you are offered admission.
• Letters of Recommendation  – Submit three letters of recommendation online to graduate school. Letters should be from individuals who can evaluate the applicant’s scholarly ability and potential for success in a graduate program. The application will prompt your recommenders to submit their letters electronically.

Tuition rates and student fees can change each year. 

Based on 2022 credit hour cost, a person completing this program at the recommended pace would have paid  $22,644 in tuition .

This program is an E-Rate program, so choose “yes” for the E-Rate line item within the calculator.

Online students pay the following fees: Connect UGA, Green, and Technology. The total for those  fees in the fall semester of 2022 was $147  for students enrolled in exclusively online courses. 

Potential additional costs include textbooks, exam proctoring fees, and technology upgrades.

Students interested in an endorsement should review the  endorsement course sequence  to ensure that electives correspond with the requirements for their state.

LLED 6010e Survey of Reading Instruction Pre-K through Grade 12 – Principles and practices in preschool through secondary reading instruction. An overview of the methods, principles, and practices of teaching reading. This is a reading endorsement course.

 LLED 6020e Practicum in Reading Instruction and Assessment (Clinic) – Formal and informal assessments, instructional procedures, and materials for children experiencing reading difficulties. This is a reading endorsement course. Tutoring is a requirement.

Specialization Courses (9 credit hours)

LLED 7110e Integrating Digital Resources in the Literacy Classroom – Integration of computers into instruction to enhance literacy in elementary through secondary schools.

LLED 7910e New Literacies – This course provides an overview of the ambiguities and tensions created by a current move from the long established autonomous model of “reading” to the “New Literacy Studies” (NLS). It also addresses the implications of NLS for teaching students to comprehend a wide range of texts.

LLED 8330e Popular Culture in Literacy Classrooms K-12 – Examination of how schools and institutions of higher education should respond to popular culture especially in terms of literacy teaching and learning.

Electives (18 credit hours)

LLED 6420e Literacy Development and Instruction in Early Childhood – Emergent literacy development of preschool through grade three children; theory and research relevant to instructional approaches and practice. This is a reading endorsement course for elementary teachers.

LLED 6060e Content Area Literacies – Theory and instructional strategies for enhancing reading, writing, speaking, and listening across various subjects in the school curriculum for grades 4-12. This is a reading endorsement course for middle and high school teachers.

LLED 7070e Research Methods in Language Education – Research methods appropriate for studying language teaching and learning.

LLED 7930e, Culture and Literacy Classrooms – This course explores the ways culture transacts with teaching and learning in literacy classrooms.

LLED 7045e Global Awareness through International Children’s Literature – This special topics course aims to enable doctoral and master’s students to explore international children’s texts and the scholarship around them.

Capstone course (3 credit hours)

LLED 7940e Electronic Assessment in Literacy Classrooms – Explores why and how to effectively use print-based and technological approaches to integrating electronic portfolio assessment into the literacy K-12 curriculum.

FINAL EXAMINATION – The examination format is a multi-modal composition with the student’s choice of online or software platform (e.g., wiki, blog, presentation), design (e.g., graphics, images, audio, video).  Download the  M.Ed. Reading Education Final Exam Policy  for additional details.

• The M.S in Reading Education is for those who aim to support teachers and students in literacy. The entire program is literacy specific, including two research courses that target topics of study in literacy. Candidates earn their MS in Literacy and Reading Education and complete coursework for advanced certifications from CTC (Reading and Literacy Added Authorization and Literacy and Reading Specialist Credential) in a 30 unit program. Program can be completed 100% Online.

What is a reading specialist?

A reading specialist is a certified expert in literacy programs designed to improve the reading level of elementary, middle, and high school students. Reading specialists work as teachers, coaches, and program directors for literacy programs in grade school levels and as such, must have initial licensure in most states. Liberty University’s Master of Education – online reading specialist endorsement track program is designed to help you get the training you need to become a reading specialist.

Please note: This program includes the required steps to pursue advanced licensure in Virginia, which requires initial teaching licensure in elementary, middle grades, secondary, or special education . If you do not currently have a teaching license, our Master of Arts in Teaching program may be a better fit for you. Additionally, students must have 3 years of full-time contractual teaching experience. This experience can be accrued while pursuing the M.Ed. degree, but at least 1 year of experience must be completed prior to the internship.

Specialized Knowledge

Become an educator with specialized knowledge and skills to support students' literacy development. This program focuses on evidence-based instructional strategies through a curriculum designed to equip educators to foster a love for reading and enhance literacy outcomes for all students.

The online graduate program in Reading Education is designed to provide the necessary educational experiences for those wanting to work toward enhancing the reading, writing, and oral language competencies of children and adults. This graduate program meets standards of excellence for reading programs of the International Reading Association .

Professional Impact

Most students who participate in the Reading, M.Ed., program are practicing licensed teachers, and those aspiring to specialist licensure must have at least three (3) years of successful classroom experience. Students working toward qualification as licensed reading specialists in Tennessee will be advised to take a specific set of courses that fulfills both the ETSU requirements for the Reading, M.Ed., degree and the requirements outlined by the Tennessee Standards for Licensure as Reading Specialist, PreK-12.

Both the faculty and candidates work extensively in area schools to provide active practicum experiences. This degree is not an initial licensure program. Those seeking an initial endorsement to teach in Tennessee should enter one of the initial licensure programs.

Tennessee announced a literacy initiative to meet the needs of students who have lost ground as a result of COVID-19, and this degree aligns with the initiative. Additionally, ESL and Special Education are listed as Teacher Shortage areas for the state of Tennessee. When candidates earn these certifications along with the Reading Specialist endorsement, the job prospects are very strong.

The program offers individuals the opportunity to graduate with an M.Ed. in Reading and may lead to licensure as a TN Reading Specialist AND PreK-12 ESL Endorsement or K-5 Special Education Interventionist and 6-12 Special Education Interventionist.

Clemmer College programs are currently accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATEE), which has transitioned to the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEPP). ETSU will be seeking program accreditation through the CAEPP in the next assessment cycle.

Anyone entering the M.Ed. in Reading and seeking the Reading Specialist Endorsement along with the PreK-12 ESL Endorsement or Special Education Interventionist for grades K-5 and 6-12 must have an initial teaching license before applying to this program.

Additionally, candidates must have 2 years of experience for the Reading Specialist Endorsement. However, the program takes 2 years to complete, so by the time candidates complete the program they could have the experience necessary for the Reading Specialist Endorsement.

Those seeking admission must meet the general admission requirements for the Graduate School . In addition, applicants should:

• have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale and
• provide a current résumé.

This program may lead to a Reading Specialist endorsement for candidates who meet the requirements for that endorsement per TN Educator Preparation Policy 5.504. Please contact the Program Coordinator if you are interested in the Reading Specialist endorsement. 

Courses are offered 100% asynchronous.

Students may choose to complete a thesis, but a thesis is not required.

Full-time students typically follow one of the two following paths:

• Two years (with no summer courses), completing 9 credits in both fall and spring.
• 18 months (with summer courses), completing 9 credit hours for four consecutive semesters. 

Typically, part-time students complete the program in 2 years, completing 6 credit hours in fall, spring, and summer.

Accreditations, admission process.

The Graduate Admissions Committee reviews each applicant's interest, aptitude, and potential for achievement in graduate studies. The structure of the programs lends itself both to recent college graduates and to professionals looking to pursue graduate studies.

All applicants should possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. Before an applicant is evaluated, he or she must submit:

• complete the free online application .
• an official transcript from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended, showing completion of a baccalaureate degree and graduate courses for transfer consideration (up to 9 credits);
• A personal interview with the director of the graduate program, if required;
• letters of recommendation from instructors or supervisors
• a photocopy of teaching certification, if applicable;
• a professional résumé, if applicable;

The application form and all supporting documents should be submitted to the Graduate Office at least three weeks prior to the date of final registration in the session or semester in which the applicant seeks to enroll. Written notice of the action of the Graduate Admissions Committee will be sent to each applicant.

At the applicant's request, an interview can be scheduled to answer any questions he or she may have concerning the graduate programs. Additionally, once accepted, students are encouraged to arrange for an interview to design the program of study.

The demands of PK-12 education are rapidly evolving, and strong administrators are critical in leading their local education agencies (LEAs) through change. The Principal Certificate Program is designed for working educational professionals seeking to develop their school leadership and management skills and advance their careers as executive leaders. Hosted entirely online, this flexible and competitively priced program will prepare you for:  

• Supervising, directing, and assessing certified and non-certified staff through an organizational vision

The School Principal certification qualifies educators holding a current teaching certification, and three (3) years of professional classroom experience. Cohorts begin each fall semester and include a 260-hour practicum designed to give students practical experience in school administration. 

Master of Education - MSLE Programs (Reading, Special Education)

King’s College Partners with IMSLEC and ALTA Offering Graduate Credit for Multisensory Structured Language Education Training Courses.

Earn 6 graduate credits for each academic year of International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council  ( imslec.org ) accredited Multisensory Structured Language Education coursework through King’s College .

First year – Enroll in EDUC 800 for the Fall semester and EDUC 801 for the Spring semester. Successful completion of both courses may lead to Teacher Level Certification in an IMSLEC accredited Multisensory Structured Language Education course and eligibility to become nationally certified by the Academic Language Therapy Association ( ALTAread.org) .

Second year – Enroll in EDUC 802 for the Fall semester and EDUC 803 for the Spring semester. Successful completion of these courses may lead to Advanced or Therapy Level Certification from the IMSLEC training program.

EDUC 800: Multisensory Structured Language Education Initial Course 1 and Initial Practicum 1

Initial Course 1 will consist of Lecture hours to develop an understanding of dyslexia and the Multisensory Structured Language Education remediation approach. Participants will learn the research, history, definition, and characteristics of dyslexia, as well as effective remediation techniques using a systematic multisensory approach. A simultaneous Supervised Practicum, composed of two teaching situations with students, will be required. Completion of this course lecture with practicum may lead to Initial Course 2: EDUC 801.

EDUC 801: Multisensory Structured Language Education Initial Course 2 and Initial Practicum 2

Initial Course 2 will consist of Lecture hours to address a continuation of the structure of the English language with emphasis on morphology, orthography and multi-syllabic words and upper level principles of instruction with students. Continuation of the simultaneous Supervised Practicum with two students, using the techniques taught during the lectures, will be required. Completion of course lecture hours and practicum experience (Practicum 1 and 2 combined) may lead to Initial Certification in an IMSLEC Accredited Multisensory Structured Language Education program.

EDUC 802: Multisensory Structured Language Education Advanced Course 1 and Advanced Practicum 1

Prerequisite Courses: Candidates must be certified in an IMSLEC accredited Teacher Level Training Multisensory Structured Language Education course (EDUC 800 and EDUC 801).

Advanced Course 1 will consist of Lecture hours with an emphasis on a deeper understanding of the upper levels 3, 4, and 5 of Multisensory Structured Language Education. Course topics will include morphology, capital cursive, keyboarding skills, grammar, paragraph writing skills, reading fluency and comprehension. A simultaneous Supervised Practicum, composed of two teaching situations with students, will be required. At least one of the teaching situations must be in the upper levels of MSLE. Completion of this course lecture with practicum may lead to Advanced course 3: EDUC 803.

EDUC 803: Multisensory Structured Language Education Advanced Course 2 and Advanced Practicum 2

Advanced Course 2 will consist of Lecture hours with a continued emphasis on a deeper understanding of the upper levels of Multisensory Structured Language Education and of basic written English language, phonology, morphology and orthography. Continuation of the simultaneous Supervised Practicum with two teaching situations (1-1 or small group) using the techniques taught during the lectures, will be required. Completion of course lecture hours in Advanced course 1 and Advanced course 2 and  Practicum experience in Practicum 2 and Practicum 3 may lead to Advanced in an IMLSEC Accredited Multisensory Structured Language Education program.

Combine three (3) of the Multisensory Structured Language Education Courses with an additional 8 graduate courses to complete the Master of Education in Reading completely ONLINE.

Online Master of Secondary Education

The Continuing Educator Improvement (CEI) program is designed for practicing educators interested in completing a master’s degree in secondary education (M.Ed.) entirely online in two years.

Applicants are admitted into the program as cohorts every spring semester. Individuals interested need to apply by October 15.

The Continuing Educator Improvement Master’s Degree in Secondary Education (M.Ed.) offers practicing educators the opportunity to complete a course of study fully online in two years. This program is designed to draw on your previous experience and help you gain advanced knowledge on teaching, research, and curriculum development.  Coursework covers all areas of the educational spectrum, with classes in topics such as applying research in education, testing, curriculum development, and theory and learning principles. The CEI M.Ed. is a non-thesis program.
