Edit your letter thoroughly. Read your letter a couple times, pass it off to someone to look over, run it through an online grammar check. Make sure it’s free of any errors.

Don’t focus on what the job can do for you. While it might seem nice to write that a job is your dream job or that you’ve always wanted to work with a company, it can read as vague flattery. Remember, this letter is about your qualifications.

Don’t list your current or previous job description. Your education and work experience certainly have value, but don’t just list your degrees and places you’ve worked at. Explained what you learned from those experiences and how they’ve made you a strong employee.

Don’t paste directly from your resume. A job application letter is meant to add to your value as a candidate, not just reiterate the same information repeatedly. Use your resume as a guide , but expand on especially relevant details.

Don’t submit an unedited letter. Before an employer ever meets you, they see your application and your job application letter. You don’t want grammar errors and misspelled words to make a bad first impression, so make sure to edit your draft multiple times.

Armed with these tips, guidelines, and examples, you’ll be able to draft your job application letter more confidently and send them off to potential employers knowing that you’re one step closer to employment.

How to Write a Great Cover Letter

Making first impressions count.

Your dream job has opened up, at just the right time in your career! You've built up the skills and experience to take this next step, whether at your own organization or elsewhere, and you're fired up with enthusiasm.

But the deadline for applications is approaching fast. So, you update your résumé and, feeling positive about your chances, you even take your interview outfit to the dry cleaners!

Next, you sit down to write your cover letter – and your hands freeze over your keyboard. You're desperate to make a great first impression on the hiring manager, and to get your application to the top of the pile. Should the letter be formal or quirky? How much and what type of information should it contain?

In this article, we explore tips and techniques for writing a cover letter that can help you to get through to the next round of the recruitment process.

This article gives general tips and guidance for writing a great cover letter, but there is no "one size fits all" template. After reading this article, use your own experience and judgment to decide on the best approach for the role that you are applying for, taking into account the organization's culture and best practices.

Preparing Your Cover Letter

First, you need to do some homework. Find out as much as you can about the team you are hoping to join. Start with your company's website and, if possible, the team's intranet. Then explore industry websites, journals or newsletters for news and information about the company and the industry in general.

This will help to make sure that you are fully up to date with current trends and potential pain points in your sector. You can use this information to gain a better understanding of what the team needs, and how you might be able to help.

Your cover letter needs to find the right tone, one that reflects the culture of your organization. Chances are, you're already familiar with this. But different teams and departments may have different ways of working. For example, do they have a formal, reserved approach, or a more relaxed and informal feel?

Next, look at your résumé from the hiring manager's point of view. Does it include anything that might concern them? For example, are there any gaps in your work history? Your cover letter should include brief explanations for these, such as taking a career break to raise your family.

Cover Letter Basics

If you were meeting a potential boss for the first time, chances are you'd take extra care with your appearance. If you pay the same attention to your cover letter, that meeting will more likely take place! So, check and double check the following areas:

  • Spelling and grammar: these mistakes are easily avoidable. A cover letter with spelling mistakes or missing words looks careless and unprofessional. Use a dictionary! Ask someone else to read your letter, too, as a "fresh pair of eyes" can pick up errors that you've missed. Reading it aloud can also help to ensure that the letter "flows."
  • Consistency: for example, if you capitalize one job title – say, Marketing Executive – capitalize all the others, too. Our article, Encouraging Attention to Detail , has strategies for maintaining high standards of work.
  • Confidence: avoid saying that you "believe" or "feel" that you are the right person for the job. Have the courage of your convictions and say that you know you are right for it.
  • Jargon and clichés: use the correct technical terms where appropriate, but bear in mind that the first person to read your letter may be an HR manager, rather than the team leader or other expert. Also, jargon and acronyms can mean different things in different teams or businesses, so they could cause confusion. Similarly, avoid meaningless, over-used phrases such as "people person" or "thinking outside the box."

Writing a Compelling Cover Letter

Chances are, you're not the only person who sees the role as a dream opportunity. It may have attracted numerous applications. That means the hiring manager has to sift through a lot of cover letters, so they will want to see at a glance what you have to offer.

Brevity is key. As writer and editor Lily Herman instructs , "Keep it short (like, really short). Your cover letter should be a single page (no more!) and around 300-350 words."

Consider the following structure as a guide for your cover letter:

1. Introduce Yourself

Grab the reader's interest with your opening paragraph. In one or two sentences, tell them who you are, and why they should hire you, and express your enthusiasm for the role.

For example, you could say, "As a sales manager with six years' experience of motivating my team and exceeding my targets each quarter, I was excited to see your advertisement for regional sales director." This sounds much more appealing than, "I am writing to apply for the role of regional sales director, which was advertised on LinkedIn."

2. Explain Why You Are the Best Candidate

Next, describe what you can bring to the role. Give examples of skills that you've developed or successes that you've enjoyed that are relevant to the job description.

Be specific, and quantify your achievements wherever possible. If you've exceeded your sales targets, for example, give a percentage or monetary figure. Tell the truth, and don't be tempted to exaggerate or embellish your accomplishments – it's unethical, and will backfire if you are caught out.

3. Be Enthusiastic About the Role

You may have the qualifications and the experience to do the job, but employers also want to know that you feel passionate about the role and their organization. Describe why the company or department appeals to you. For example, you could explain that you share its values . This signals that you'll be engaged, committed, and likely to stick around.

4. Summarize and Request a Follow-Up

Finally, round up what you've written, and indicate your availability for interview. A strong closing paragraph could be, "I've always delivered outstanding results, and I've enjoyed every challenge that has come my way. I'd be delighted to meet with you and discuss the value that I can add to your team."

Formatting Your Cover Letter

Format your cover letter as though you were going to send it in the mail, even if you're sending it by email. This will make it look more professional.

Here's a point-by-point guide for laying out your cover letter:

  • Write your name and address at the top of the page. Align it to the right.
  • Write the name and address of the prospective employer. Align it to the left.
  • Add the date of your letter under the employer's address, and align it to the left. Leave a line space between the address and the date.
  • Begin your letter with "Dear…" and the name of the hiring manager. Avoid "To whom it may concern." If you don't know who to address the letter to, send the HR department an email asking for the appropriate recipient.
  • Use a font that's clear and easy to read, such as Arial or Helvetica, with a type size of 10 or 12 points.
  • Space your paragraphs, keep wide margins, and don't crowd the page.
  • Leave a line space under the final paragraph, and sign off with "Yours sincerely" or "Best regards." Leave a couple of line spaces under the signoff, and then sign your name, typing it in full beneath your signature. If you are sending the letter digitally, it's not necessary to actually sign it – just type your name instead.

Consider sending your cover letter as a PDF file. PDFs are compatible with most computers and devices, so it should look the same on the recipient's screen as it does on your own.

Beware of These Cover Letter Pitfalls

Here are a few mistakes to avoid when writing a cover letter:

  • Making jokes. Avoid doing this, because humor is highly subjective, and can be easily misunderstood.
  • Mentioning your current salary, or salary expectation. Don't do this unless the job advertisement asks for it. This type of information is best left until you are able to negotiate a job offer .
  • Copy and pasting. Of course, to a certain extent cover letters for different applications will overlap. But make sure that your cover letter is clearly written with the job you're applying for in mind – not a simple copy and paste with a few tweaks.

Your cover letter needs to show the recruiting manager that you're the right person for the job, and that you will be a good fit for the team. Research the role carefully, and pay attention to the tone and language that you use.

Your letter should fit on one page, and be presented in a way that's easy to read. It should follow this structure:

  • Introduce yourself.
  • Explain why you are the best candidate.
  • Be enthusiastic about the role.
  • Summarize and say that you are available for interview.

Try to give real examples that demonstrate your skills, or that show how you added value to your team or organization. But tell the truth! Don't exaggerate or embellish your accomplishments.

Finally, remember to check your letter carefully for mistakes, and then check it again.

There’s one more step before you send out that application: the cover letter.

The cover letter is ESSENTIAL in the job application process. It complements your resume by giving the hiring manager a taste of your personality and enthusiasm for the position.

In this article, we’ll give you all the cover letter tips you’ll ever need!

We’ve divided  our cover letter tips into three main parts, in order of importance:

  • Essential Tips - These tips are fundamental to writing a killer cover letter.
  • Important Tips - These cover letter tips are also important, but not as essential.
  • Nice-to-have Tips - Not super important, but these tips can still be a nice addition to your cover letter.

9 Essential Cover Letter Tips

Tip #1 - get the basics right.

Before we get into any of the other tips, we want to make sure you know what a great cover letter looks like .

In a nutshell, a cover letter consists of six main parts:

  • A header , which contains your contact information
  • A greeting for the hiring manager
  • The opening paragraph , where you open with an attention grabber and list your top achievements
  • The second paragraph , where you explain why you’re the perfect candidate for the job
  • The third paragraph , where you explain why you’re compatible with the company, its work culture, and its goals
  • The closing remarks

Tip #2 - Tailor your cover letter to the position

You might be tempted to write one awesome cover letter and use it for every position you apply to.

After all, if it’s so good, it should work everywhere, right?

The thing is, the whole point of a cover letter is to show your achievements and enthusiasm about the particular company and position you are applying to.

Different positions have different requirements and responsibilities. You can convince a recruiter to hire you if you make a case for why you’re great for that particular position , not why you’re great in general. 

This is why a one-letter-fits-all approach does not work.

To personalize your cover letter to the exact position you are applying for, you should:

  • Identify the position’s key responsibilities and get a sense of what kind of person they are looking for.
  • Write a cover letter that demonstrates how you can handle those responsibilities and how you’re the right person for the job.

Both candidates are applying for the position of brand development manager in company XYZ.

I am responsible and creative. I have also done well in all my previous positions. I enjoy the work culture in your company and I believe I would be a great fit here.

A brand development management position in XYZ is key to successfully launching XYZ’s brands into e-commerce. In my previous positions, I have led 14 projects and have developed four separate brand launch plans, all of which have raised awareness of the brands within 6 months of the launch plan application.

Rose obviously sends the same cover letter to all job applications because there is nothing position-specific about the way she describes her skills. 

Candance, on the other hand, has identified the position’s requirements and key roles and demonstrates how she’s a great fit for it.

Now, which one would you hire based on what you read?

Tip #3 - Use your professional email

This might sound obvious, but it’s something important that might easily slip your attention.

If you use that [email protected] email you made in the fourth grade in your cover letter, the hiring manager immediately X-s you out.

No silly puns and no pop culture references: use a professional email that has your first name and last name.

Tip #4 - Don’t repeat your resume

The hiring manager already has your resume. If you simply repeat the information you’ve provided there, what’s the point in writing a cover letter at all?

So what exactly can you say besides what they already know?

Think of the cover letter as the “story” behind your resume. Write about what makes you passionate to do what you do and why you’re a good fit for the position.

Let’s say that in your resume you mention that you worked as a tech assistant and highlighted your key responsibilities. 

In your cover letter, you want to highlight how working as a tech assistant prepared you for the position you are applying for and why you’re passionate about joining the team. 

This way, the hiring manager can also see part of your personality and motivation.

Tip #5 - Make it easy to read

You might be tempted to use long, convoluted sentences and SAT words to show how you’re a professional, sophisticated person.

You don’t want the hiring manager to spend five minutes on one sentence wondering just what the heck you are trying to say.

Keep your language simple and your sentences short and straightforward.

Tip #6 - Keep it short

This one’s pretty simple: don’t drag out your cover letter. One page is more than enough.

The golden rule is to keep it between 250-400 words long in 3-6 paragraphs .

You don’t want to risk the hiring manager getting tired and stopping halfway through reading it.

Tip #7 - Follow submission instructions

The company usually specifies the format you should use when submitting your application.

Look out for specifications about:

  • File format (Word, PDF)
  • Font & margins
  • Content specifics, like which sections or contact information to include

Follow those instructions to a T or the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) might end up not reading your file at all .

If there is nothing specific in the job posting, your best bet is to submit your cover letter in PDF format . Use the same font and design as your resume to enhance your personal brand .

Tip #8 - Proofread your cover letter

Once you’re done writing, make sure your cover letter doesn’t have any spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. They’re absolute turn-offs for recruiters.

9 Important Cover Letter Tips

Tip #1 - address the letter to the hiring manager.

The days when you used “To whom it may concern” or “Dear Sir/Madam” to address your cover letter are long gone.

The best practice is to address your cover letter directly to the hiring manager , as “Dear Mr. Doe”.

That’s usually the head of the department you are applying for or the HR manager.

How can you find his or her name??

  • Check the job posting for any contact details.
  • Check the company’s LinkedIn and website for the job title.
  • Ask any contacts you might know inside the company.

If you still don’t have any clue who to address your cover letter to, here’s what you can use:

  • Dear [Department] Team,
  • Dear [Department] Hiring Manager,
  • Dear Hiring Manager

Tip #2 - Open up with your achievements

The first impression you make is vital because you only get one chance, and it can make or break your application.

The opening paragraph of your cover letter serves as the first impression to the hiring manager. He or she has countless cover letters to read so yours should pop out from the start.

Thus, you must start outlining why you’re a great candidate for the position in the introduction .

Let’s demonstrate how to do it correctly by looking at the two examples below.

What’s the difference between these two cover letter introductions :

“My name is Justin Brown and I would like to contribute towards ABC’s goal to create an outstanding visual experience for end customers throughout the world. Previously, I’ve worked for XYZ, a renowned graphic design company, for 5 years, where I helped create high-quality visual designs from concept to specs to final product. I believe my updated industry experience, along with my ability to adjust between the bigger picture and concrete problems, as well as my attention to detail, makes me the right candidate for the position.”

“Hi, my name is Josh and I really want to work for your company. I heard about the job opening from LinkedIn and decided to apply. I used to work as a graphic designer for XYZ for 5 years, and this is the perfect opportunity for me.”

If there’s one obvious thing, it is that the second one is a WINNING introduction. 

Why? Well, unlike Josh, Justin’s introduction:

  • Opens with an attention-grabbing sentence , highlighting how Justin can contribute directly towards the company’s goals.
  • Outlines his responsibilities and achievements in his previous position.
  • Describes what makes him the perfect candidate .

Meanwhile, Josh’s introduction doesn’t say much about him as a candidate except that he used to be employed for five years. 

Granted, Josh could be better qualified than Justin, but you could never tell from his cover letter. The hiring manager probably stopped reading and added Josh to the “Rejected” pile.

That’s why you should go beyond the basics in your cover letter’s introduction. Make your intent, contribution, and skills known upfront.

Tip #3 - Use bullet points for your qualifications

There’s a good reason why we use bullet points so much:

  • They help us list things effectively 
  • They get the point across
  • They break up the paragraphs into smaller chunks and overall makes the cover letter easier to skim or read
  • They summarize a lot of information in a digestible manner

See what we did there?

That’s what you should do when you list your qualifications in your cover letter as well. 

Instead of writing everything out, use bullet points to sum up all your successes. The hiring manager will be immediately drawn to them and WON’T just skim through your cover letter mindlessly. 

Tip #4 - Use numbers and facts

Whenever you describe your successful experiences, you want to enrich them with actual percentages, numbers, and tangible facts.

When achievements are backed up by real performance metrics, they boost your credibility.

So, instead of simply describing your achievements:

“I have previous experience with transfusion therapies and taking care of people with rare diseases. I also speak three languages, which can come in handy with patients from different nationalities.”

Use the power of numbers (and bullet points) to convince the hiring manager.

My 10 years of experience in the medical field have contributed towards my excellence in:

  • Managing the medical care of 75+ patients with rare diseases.
  • Assisting 25+ patients attending transfusion therapy. 
  • Taking care of 50+ patients from different nationalities, made easy by my fluency in English, German, and Spanish.

Tip #5 - Avoid cliches

Cliches are so overused, they risk making you look as if you have no original thoughts.

Any of the following can be a cliche (but not only):

  • I am a great team player.
  • I am a multi-tasker.
  • I have great attention to detail.
  • I am a good communicator.

After all the insights we’ve shared with you so  far, you might guess why cliches are a NO:

They add nothing of substance to your content. And you want to use the valuable space in your cover letter to showcase why you’re a great fit for the job. 

Whenever you are tempted to write a cliche, twist it by providing facts to back up your experience.

So, instead of saying : 

“I am a great team player”.

Show them why you are one by describing your experience: 

“In my previous position, I worked with five other colleagues from three different departments to arrive at a marketable digital solution for our customers. Working with individuals with diverse opinions taught me the value of effective teamwork, a lesson I am happy to utilize in this position.”

Tip #6 - Use acronyms correctly

Acronyms are great. They save up space and show the hiring manager that you speak the industry lingo, especially if you’re applying for a technical position.

And yes, chances are the recruiter understands all the acronyms you might use in your cover letter. 

Nonetheless, you should never use acronyms thinking the recruiter understands them. Instead,  write the word the first time around and put the acronym into brackets, and then you can go ahead and use just the acronym if it repeats throughout the text. 

Here’s what we mean:

I have two years of experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS). I have specifically worked with Amazon Elasticsearch (AES) in my previous position. I believe the cloud computing service model provided by AWS can be successfully applied to your business model. 

I have two years of experience with AWS. I have specifically worked with AES and AMI in my previous positions.

Tip #7- Don’t include your address

By all means, you should include your contact information in your cover letter.

However, your address or area of work goes into your resume , not the cover letter.

Tip #8 - Don’t apologize

There comes a time when you have to account for possible red flags in your work experience.

These can include:

  • Getting fired or being laid off
  • Having too many short-lived jobs
  • A gap in your resume
  • Lack of experience

You might want to rush and explain these red flags in your cover letter, just to let the hiring manager know there’s nothing to worry about.

We’re here to say NO.

Do not apologize or explain anything you think is “negative”. The hiring manager will bring up any concerns he or she might have in your interview. You’ll have an opportunity to answer there.

Tip #9 - Don’t be arrogant

Just as being apologetic is not a good look, being over-confident is equally damning.

Nobody likes someone cocky, so avoid talking in superlatives or praising your abilities. 

Let your work experience and achievements speak on your behalf.

In my previous position, I surpassed my yearly conversion targets by 34%.

I am a great employee. All my previous managers loved having me around because I was the best at my job.

4 Nice-to-Have Cover Letter Tips

Tip #1 - insert your social media and personal website.

Including your professional social media or personal website adds an extra touch to your cover letter.

Hint: We’re not talking about your Facebook or VSCO. You probably take great pictures of your food, but that will not get you hired.

If you have a LinkedIn, Github, Behance, or Dribble account, however, it can give the hiring manager something extra to look at.

If you have a personal website with your showcased work or portfolio, even better!

Make sure to add a link to those under your contact information

Tip #2 - End with a call to action

Ending a cover letter is usually the hardest part. You’ve described all your achievements, thanked the manager for their time, now what?

We recommend concluding your letter with a “call to action”, inviting your hiring manager to take further steps.

For example, you could write something like: 

“I look forward to further discussing how my legal skills and experience can help ABC with corporate and commercial transactions for its international operations.”

Tip #3 - Use power words and action verbs

Power words and action verbs are selected words you can use throughout your cover letter to make your achievements *pop* more .

So, instead of saying “I was responsible for” fifteen different times, you can use some action verbs to make your language more diverse, like:

  • I managed a team of five people.
  • I facilitated the communication and task allocation of five people.
  • I coordinated a team of five people.

They make your text flow smoothly, enhance the power of your actions, AND make your language more versatile.

Tip #4 - Get a second opinion

Sometimes when we’re writing we get so lost trying to put our thoughts into words, we lose sight of the bigger picture.

If you have a capable friend, recruiter, or career advisor, it doesn’t hurt to ask them to take a look at your cover letter. 

Have them check it for spelling and grammatical mistakes (just in case you missed any) and whether they think your cover letter does your skills and qualifications justice.

The primary purpose of having a cover letter is to engage employers when they review your application. Succeeding in this can help give you an interview and maybe even an offer. It also shows information they may not find on your resume, like your motivation.

Parts of a Cover Letter

A cover letter is a one-page document submitted along with your resume. Since all companies are different, it's important to tailor your cover letter to ensure it aligns with your job's values.

For each position, you'll need to tailor the letter in a way that helps you stand out to employers. These include regularly modifying the following depending on the job description:

The salutation part of your cover letter is your greeting. Doing this makes the letter seem much more personal since you're addressing a specific person. That means you're better off writing a “Mr.” or “Ms.” Instead of a “To whom it may concern.” To make this part more effective, you'll have to do some research to understand who will be reviewing your resume.

Opening line

The opening line sets the tone for any cover letter. It has the potential to make the entire document more memorable. Examples of strong opening lines can include jokes and puns. You can also open a cover letter with strong emotions, like passion or enthusiasm.

The story is the biggest part of your cover letter. This part is your unique selling point, covering your skills, qualifications, and what you can bring to the table if you're hired. Here, you write the details of what makes you stand out compared to others. It's nearly impossible to have a similar career journey with someone else.

Closing line

Once you finish the letter's main body, a closing line allows you to end the letter gracefully and professionally. It's also here where you can express gratitude and thank the employer for their time. A good closing line summarizes your letter, meaning you should also remind the employer why you make the perfect fit for the role.

You can find the signature at the very bottom of the cover letter. It has your name, signature, and sign-offs like “Sincerely” or “Regards.” It's perhaps the least important to include out of the five, but it's a good closer. Contact information is unnecessary here since they can already find it on your resume.

The purpose of a cover letter is to persuade hiring managers that you’re a good fit for the job. Think of it as being like a sales pitch: while a resume outlines the entirety of your related work experience and skills, your cover letter gives the highlights. The goal is to grab the hiring manager’s attention and convince them that your application should make it to the next round.

Of course, hiring managers and recruiters are busy. One study found that recruiters spend an average of just 7.4 seconds reviewing a resume before moving it to the “yes” or “no” pile. Adding bullets to your cover letter can help you make the most of those seconds, highlighting your relevant experience and matching it to the job listing’s requirements.  

Bullets can show your experience and skills in a way that stands out immediately.

Readers may skim through your opening paragraph, but their eyes will automatically pause when they see a bulleted list of qualifications. There's something about the white space and the formatting of bullet points that's very eye-catching.

Start your cover letter with an introductory paragraph that explains why you are writing. Then, when explaining your related experience, use a bullet for each of your job qualifications.

Each bullet point should include a concise phrase or sentence that begins with an action word ; you can include a period at the end of each sentence. Avoid having too much text for each bullet point; once the text following a bullet point spreads to three lines, it might make more sense in paragraph form.

Use simple bullets such as circles, dots, hyphens, or small squares.

Avoid other symbols that might look too confusing or may not upload properly when you apply for jobs online. Keeping it simple will avoid funky formatting in your cover letter.

To generate your bullet points, match your qualifications to the job description . Include the skills that are the closest match to the job.

You might also include keywords related to the job, but not specifically listed in the job listing. To figure out which keywords to include, scan job postings for other, related positions at other companies, or scan this list of skills to include in a cover letter or resume .

As well as listing skills, you can use bullet points to convey accomplishments (e.g., "Drove record-breaking sales numbers.").

Follow business-letter format for your cover letter. If you send your cover letter via email , omit the’ address paragraphs and choose a clear subject line , e.g., “Teacher’s Aide Application – Kim Fleming.”

Letter Introduction

The first paragraph of your letter should include information on why you are writing.

Refer to the position you are applying for and tell the hiring manager where you found the job listing. If you were recommended by a contact , now’s the time to mention it.

Key Elements of a Cover Letter

The cover letter is usually the first item an employer reads from you. Your letter should immediately indicate what position you are applying for and then give information that demonstrates why you should be considered for the position. Do not repeat all of the information contained in your resume. Instead, highlight or elaborate on resume items that are directly applicable to the position for which you are applying. The following information should be included in your cover letter.

Information about you

Begin your cover letter with your contact information. It should be in block style, on the left margin of your paper, towards the top. Name Current home address Telephone number
Include a date as you would do with any business letter.

Contact Person's Name, Title, Employer, and Address

Including a specific name can get your letter and resume to the hiring manager more quickly and can be an effective personal touch. If you are applying for an advertised position that does not give a name to contact, call the company and ask for the department manager's name.
Choose the appropriate way to address the contact person. For example: Dear Mr. Johns (if a man's name is the contact) Dear Ms. Smith (if a woman's name is the contact) Dear Prospective Employer (if there is no contact name)  

Opening Paragraph

In the opening paragraph tell how you learned about the position. You may, for example, know of a job through: a classified advertisement an unsolicited mailing the Internet personal referrals

Middle Paragraph

This paragraph gives a summary of your background and critical skills (hard skills) that make you qualified for the position.

Second Middle Paragraph

This paragraph can be used to demonstrate your persuasive skills (soft skills).

Contact Information and Closing

At the end of the letter talk about your availability for the job, where you can be contacted, and when you are going to contact the hiring person for an appointment to discuss your application. If you have no contact name you may simply want to indicate your anticipation for a response in this part of the letter. Thank the person to whom you are writing for his/her time and consideration of your application.

Other Considerations:

Paper and Printing

  • Use white or ivory (20-25 lb.), 8 ½ x 11 bond paper printed on one side only.
  • Use the same paper for resume, cover letter, and envelopes if possible.
  • Make sure that there is no shadowing or dirty marks from your printer on the papers.

Error Prevention

  • Follow instructions in employment ads or recruitment directions.
  • Proofread! Look for spelling and formatting errors. Make sure recipient's name, company name, and title are correctly spelled in the letter and on the envelope.
  • Proofread again!
  • Have another person proofread your letter and resume.
  • Be sure there are no errors of fact.
  • Sign in blue or black ink.
  • Keep a copy of the cover letter and resume for your records.
  • Follow up with a phone call, about five days after expected delivery.

Layout and Design

  • Follow standard cover letter format.
  • Keep the cover letter to one page.
  • Set margins at 1 ½”.
  • Use a simple, easy to read font style, 10-14 point. (Times, Courier, or Helvetica)
  • Use boldface, italics, all-caps and underlining, but don't overdo it.

Planning and Tone

  • Tailor each cover letter to one specific position.
  • Use industry jargon specific to your career field.
  • Identify the employer's key words and use them.
  • Make all statements positive. Check the tone by asking yourself if each sentence leaves a positive impression.
  • Show originality but not cuteness.
  • Use action verbs and phrases .
  • Sound determined and confident not desperate.
  • Organize context in a reasonable and logical order.
  • Use correct grammar.
  • Keep sentences short.
  • Keep paragraphs short.
  • Use short words and simple language.
  • Make every word count.
  • Punctuate using commas, dashes, and periods.
  • Focus on the employer's need for a worker, rather than your need for a job.

Before we dive in, let’s cover the main elements of a job application. Generally, it consists of an application form, a request for a resume and cover letter, and fields where you can explain your experience and other details that demonstrate your suitability for a role. 

You’ll typically find the following sections in a job application:

How to improve a job application: 9 effective tips 

Next, I’ll share nine tips to improve your job application so you wow hiring managers and stand apart from other candidates. 

1. Carefully read the job description 

Before applying for a job, review the job description. This ensures you understand what the role entails and helps you determine whether you meet the requirements . 

Let’s say you're thinking about applying for a media strategist position. You see that the role requires you to have a “proven record of achieving sales goals across media channels” and “extensive knowledge of customer relationship management software.”

If you lack these qualifications, you should consider applying to another position that better fits your work history. That way, you can highlight relevant skills and experience, increasing your chances of advancing in the hiring process. 

2. Research the company 

By researching the company you’re applying to, you can better explain in your application how your skills, qualities, and achievements align with its mission and goals. 

During your research, focus on five key areas : 

  • Mission statement 
  • Company values
  • Products and services 
  • Current initiatives and projects
  • Company leadership 

You can find this information on the organization’s website. However, to get a full picture of a company, you should also explore its social media platforms, newsletters, customer and employee reviews, and recent news coverage.

3. Follow directions

In the early hiring stages, recruiters and hiring managers often reject candidates who don’t follow application instructions. This is because attention to detail and the ability to follow directions are important qualities for everyone to have.

So, if you want to make it to the next round, carefully follow all instructions around submission materials, naming conventions, and other items in the job application.

For example, lifestyle media brand The Everygirl specifies what applicants should include in their job application for a social media editor position: a resume, social media handles, ideas for content, and more.

4. Tailor your resume to the position

Your resume should align your skills and experience with those outlined in the job description.

You can show this overlap by using specific keywords. This is important, as many employers use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to eliminate applications that lack key information. 

Consider the following job description for a content creator position. If you were applying for this role, you’d include keywords like the ones in bold: 

  • Create video and image content for Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. 
  • Write clear and compelling social media copy. 
  • Optimize content for SEO to improve search engine rankings. 
  • Design attention-grabbing infographics using Canva .

For example, you might add to your resume a line such as, “Wrote SEO-optimized social media copy.”

5. Use numbers to illustrate your impact

Recruiters want to know more than what you did at your last job. They want to see how your actions impacted the company. 

Numbers give them this information. When you use figures and percentages in your resume, you show recruiters that you can achieve measurable results for their organization. 

Ariella Despins , former career support director at career advice site Work It Daily, suggests answering four questions to effectively incorporate numbers into your resume: 

  • How often? 

For example, a project coordinator might craft their resume points as follows: 

  • How much : “Implemented a new project tracking system, increasing workflow efficiency by 20% .”
  • How many : “Trained 10 group members on project management best practices.” 
  • How often : “Generated progress reports for senior management twice a month .” 
  • How long : “Led a project team for six months , meeting key project milestones on time.”

6. Create a custom cover letter

Your cover letter should explain why you’re a good fit for the position and what attracts you to the company. 

This is where the research you conducted earlier comes in handy. Connect what you learned about the organization and its culture to your qualifications and achievements. 

As an example, let’s say the company you’re interested in values innovation and initiative. 

In your cover letter, you could show that you embody these values by explaining how you introduced your previous employer to a cutting-edge productivity tool and helped the company integrate the software into its workflow.

7. Use proper formatting

Improperly formatting your resume and cover letter can indicate a lack of professionalism. So, make sure you check these key elements while formatting:

  • Length. Keep your resume to one page and your cover letter to two to four paragraphs. 
  • Margins. Set your margins to one inch on all sides for both documents. 
  • Spacing. Use 1 to 1.15 line spacing for both documents. Also, leave a blank space between each job position on a resume and in between cover letter paragraphs to break up text. 
  • Structure. Your resume should feature sections for your work experience and bullet points for job duties. Meanwhile, your cover letter should tell a story about your qualifications and achievements using full paragraphs. 
  • Font and font size. For both documents, choose popular, easy-to-read fonts like Times New Roman or Arial in sizes 10 to 12.  ‍
  • File format and name. Submit your resume and cover letter as PDFs to ensure consistent layout and formatting across devices. (But be sure to check that the company accepts PDF uploads!) Unless the company notes otherwise, include your first and last name and either “resume” or “cover letter” in the file name.

8. Provide thoughtful answers

Many job applications will ask you to answer specific questions — similar to ones you might encounter in a job interview.

Hiring managers assess your application answers for insight into your skills, experience, personality, and decision-making process. Therefore, you should craft thoughtful responses that allow recruiters to evaluate your character and how you’d respond to a given situation. 

One approach is to use the “STAR” method . When using this method, you describe the “Situation” you faced, the “Task” you needed to achieve, the “Action” you took to address the situation and accomplish the task, and the “Result” of your actions, as well as lessons learned.  

For example, here’s how a journalist might use the STAR method to answer the question, “Tell me about a time you failed.” 

As an education writer at a newspaper, I was assigned a story about a new academic department at a local college. 

As part of my reporting process, I interviewed faculty within the new department but couldn’t get in touch with key decision-makers. I realized I needed more time to secure interviews to tell a complete story. 

I explained the issue to my editor, requested an extension, and apologized for the inconvenience. He kindly granted the extension. 

I conducted the necessary interviews and completed the story within the extension window. This experience taught me to create a plan for handling interview scheduling challenges. That way, I can always submit future stories on time.

9. Proofread

After completing your application, carefully review it for errors. As you proofread , pay close attention to:

  • Facts and figures: Incorrect dates, names, or job titles.
  • Spelling and punctuation: Typos, misspelled words, and missing/misused commas or periods.
  • Clarity and concision: Wordy sentences, redundancies, and vague job responsibilities.
  • Layout: Dense text, inconsistent spelling, or not enough white space.

John Vine, former independent inspector of borders and immigration, is Sophy's first guest tonight - and he is asked how the government can lose track of migrants.

"It depends really what you mean by lose," he says. 

Mr Vine says that because of the way asylum seekers are housed, "many people are allowed to suggest that they have relatives, addresses, friends in the community".

"And the Home Office allows people to, usually under conditions where they come and report on a regular basis to an immigration centre, go into the community and live with friends and relatives."

He adds: "Very often though... the vetting of those addresses is pretty cursory, and so I'm not entirely sure the Home Office have the capacity to actually check all those addresses."

"In any case, people have always absconded from reporting," Mr Vine continues. 

"Often because they are being recriminalised by organised crime, often with jobs in the grey economy or in illegal activity."

Mr Vine goes on to say it isn't a "very good start" for the Home Office if so many people who may have gone to Rwanda are missing.

And on claims that ministers have said these people will be found, Mr Vine says: "That's easier said than done."

More than half of the asylum seekers allocated for removal to Rwanda cannot be found by the Home Office, according to the government's own impact assessment.

Almost six thousand people were due to be issued a "Notice of Intent" that their asylum claim was inadmissible, but just over two thousand are able to be tracked down.

The Home Office claims in a new document that the government of  Rwanda  has agreed "in principle" to accept 5,700 asylum seekers from the UK, but admits only 2,143 attend regular check-ins and "can be located for detention".

It is unclear whether the 3,557 missing asylum seekers have gone underground to avoid deportation or are victims of administrative errors caused by moving between different taxpayer-funded accommodations.

It's another day of difficult headlines for the government on migration.

"The government denies losing track of likely Rwanda deportees."

"Home Office lost contact with thousands set for Rwanda flight."

A document slipped out by the department states that of the 5,700 migrants identified for removal to Rwanda, only 2,145 of them "continue to report to the Home Office and can be located for detention."

Apparently: "The Home Office has until now relied on the incentive of free accommodation and a £49 weekly allowance to prevent people from absconding, but officials fear that the threat of deportation would outweigh that."

You don't have to be a genius to work out that if you know you're about to be put on a flight to Rwanda, you might stop checking in with the Home Office, and quietly slip away.

It's thought that many will try to make their way to Ireland, where the government says the threat of deportation to Rwanda is causing "fearful" migrants to head for Ireland instead of the UK – and a diplomatic row has broken out over whether they can be sent back. 

Now there is an argument that all of this shows the Rwanda plan IS working – purely on the metric of whether the threat of being sent to Rwanda is a deterrent – well, people are already changing their behaviour. Success.

There are two things I would add though.

It can't be a good thing to see so many vulnerable people simply disappearing – making it much more likely that they'll be exploited – sell their bodies – work illegally – become victims of crime.

And of course – the government wants the threat of being sent to Rwanda to act as a deterrent for migrants who are NOT in the UK… rather than a deterrent for those already here.

And on that, it's too early to tell. 

We're starting tonight's show with the latest from Hainault in east London, where a 36-year-old man was arrested today after a stabbing attack.

A 14-year-old boy was killed  and four people, including two police officers, were left injured after a man went on a rampage in Hainault.

Police were called to reports  that a man was wielding a sword and attacking members of the public at around 7am.

The suspect was arrested 22 minutes later and the doorbell footage shows the moment officers cornered the hooded man, who was still holding his weapon, in a driveway.

Kate Forbes narrowly lost out to Humza Yousaf in last year's SNP leadership contest.

Ms Forbes has told Sky News she is considering entering the race again in the wake of Mr Yousaf's resignation.

The former finance secretary faced backlash during her campaign last year after admitting she would have voted against gay marriage in Scotland when it was made legal a decade ago.

The Free Church of Scotland member also told Sky News that having children out of marriage is "wrong" and something she would "seek to avoid".

However, the MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch stressed that "in a free society you can do what you want".

Ms Forbes had argued that "continuity won't cut it".

After losing to Mr Yousaf by 48% to 52%, she said: "If we are to continue to win elections, we need to continue to listen and maintain trust."

Ms Forbes turned down the role of rural affairs minister, which at the time was seen as a demotion.

Although her views on social issues remain unpopular with some of her MSP colleagues, she was one of the few SNP ministers who did not delete her WhatsApp messages during the COVID pandemic.

Ms Forbes would face resistance from the Scottish Greens, who have previously ruled out working with her.

SNP colleague Fergus Ewing is backing Ms Forbes, saying she is "head and shoulders" above any other potential candidate.

With Humza Yousaf stepping down as Scotland's first minister and SNP leader, Scotland reporter Jenness Mitchell takes a look at some of the potential candidates that could throw their hat into the ring to take the top job.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke to his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu earlier today, reiterating the need for increased aid supplies to Gaza.

In a read-out of the call, a spokesman said: "They discussed the current hostage negotiations, and the prime minister expressed his solidarity with the hostage families and hope that the negotiations are concluded to allow hostages to return home as soon as possible.    

"The prime minister welcomed Israel's commitment to increasing the flows of aid into Gaza. He reiterated the urgency and importance of continuing to get much more aid in and emphasised there needed to be greater access to facilitate these deliveries, including via the vital land routes. 

"The UK continued to push for an immediate humanitarian pause to allow more aid in and hostages out.   

"The prime minister reiterated the UK's support for Israel's security and said our focus is on de-escalation which is essential and in everyone’s interest."

Hate preachers could be banned from coming to the UK in a bid to clamp down on people "spewing vile extremism".

The move was first mooted last month in the wake of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak warning about a rise in extremism.

A new taskforce will be set up to identify prominent extremists overseas in a bid to stop them being granted visas, the Home Office announced today.

Hate preachers and extremists will be automatically referred to the Home Office for review, which could lead to visas being cancelled or refused if they attempt to travel to the UK.

Typically used against people who pose a security threat, the decisions would be made under the Home Secretary's power to exclude people from entering the country on the basis this would be "conducive to the public good".

Organisations based in the country trying to sponsor visas for those considered to be extremists could have their licence to do so revoked, meaning they can no longer request visas, according to the department.

Home Secretary James Cleverly said the work would prevent foreign extremists from coming to the UK to "spread their vile narratives" while Security Minister Tom Tugendhat said there was "no place in the UK" for people who spread hate.

He added: "We will not apologise for defending our country's fundamental values and principles. 

"This new taskforce will help to do exactly that."

The following outline provides a high-level overview of the FTC’s proposed final rule :

  • Specifically, the final rule provides that it is an unfair method of competition—and therefore a violation of Section 5 of the FTC Act—for employers to enter into noncompetes with workers after the effective date.
  • Fewer than 1% of workers are estimated to be senior executives under the final rule.
  • Specifically, the final rule defines the term “senior executive” to refer to workers earning more than $151,164 annually who are in a “policy-making position.”
  • Reduced health care costs: $74-$194 billion in reduced spending on physician services over the next decade.
  • New business formation: 2.7% increase in the rate of new firm formation, resulting in over 8,500 additional new businesses created each year.
  • This reflects an estimated increase of about 3,000 to 5,000 new patents in the first year noncompetes are banned, rising to about 30,000-53,000 in the tenth year.
  • This represents an estimated increase of 11-19% annually over a ten-year period.
  • The average worker’s earnings will rise an estimated extra $524 per year.
