Are Video Games a Waste of Time?

Many people claim that video games are a waste of time. are they really.

Podcaster Joe Rogan of the Joe Rogan Experience , who also happens to be a UFC ringside commentator, recently went on a tirade about video games and warned that people who play video games are " gonna waste your time ."

He's not the only one to cast aspersions upon video games. Many parents, educators, researchers, politicians, and scholars have leveled similar accusations against video games since they first gained widespread popularity in the 1980s. As Joe Rogan reminds us, this attitude is still around 40 years later.

Are We Having Fun Yet?

My response to Joe Rogan, and to others who claim video games are a "waste of time," is: not if you have fun playing them. According to a recent study by the NPD group, 73% of Americans over the age of 2 play video games of some kind. They are popular for a reason. They are a lot of fun, and fun is not a waste of time .

For a moment, let's set aside the very small percentage of people who become "obsessed" or "addicted" to video games. We shouldn't use outliers as a reason why a near-universal activity should be vilified. If we were to go down that road, then we'd have to blacklist cars, alcohol , sports, French fries, cats (cat-hoarding is a problem for some people), as well as a painfully long list of other interests and activities. The vast majority of people who play video games lead healthy, productive lives. Given that we are suffering enough through this COVID-19 pandemic, thank goodness we can have fun and connect with others safely through video games!

On his podcast, Joe Rogan uses the comparison of wasting time playing video games to dedicating oneself to practicing the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Rogan states that if someone dedicates themselves to the practice of BJJ, in several years, they might start winning tournaments and then ultimately open their own BJJ school and end up driving a Mercedes and having a nice family. Really? Is this the litmus test? While this might be true for a very tiny subset of BJJ practitioners, most do not go on to making a career out of their martial arts training. Does this mean that all of these other folks are wasting their time?

People engage in an extensive variety of activities, including martial arts, because they find such activities enjoyable. Consider these broad categories of leisure activities:

• Board and card games

They even have a name for this bizarre idea in which people regularly engage in activity for fun or enjoyment. They are called hobbies .

If we are going to throw video games under the bus as a waste of time, think of all the other types of entertainment that would need to go under the bus with them. This list would include every type of entertainment to which we watch or listen. This includes movies, streaming content, plays, musicals, concerts, sporting events, stand-up comedy (Joe Rogan, has done stand-up comedy), game shows (Joe Rogan hosted the game show Fear Factor for several years), viewing works of art at a museum, and so on.

Consider some of the acclaimed, much-beloved arts and entertainment that we have enjoyed over the years such as Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Stranger Things, Breaking Bad, Seinfeld , The Wizard of Oz, The Godfather, college football, The World Series, Harry Potter books, The Catcher in the Rye, The Odyssey, Hamilton, Wicked , Mozart, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, U2, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé ... just to name a few. Are these a waste of time? We watch and listen because we enjoy the experiences they provide. Arguably, such experiences make life worth living.

A Matter of Values

The case that Joe Rogan and many others often make about video games is that they are too much fun. Thus, people end up spending inordinate amounts of time playing them at the exclusion of other, more "productive," or perhaps edifying, activities. The (sort of) straw man argument here is to take people who are spending 12 hours per day playing games such as Fortnite , failing classes, not sleeping enough, not leaving the house, not interacting in person with others, etc. to illustrate how video games are a waste of time. Well, one might make the argument that engaging in any hobby or activity for 12 hours per day is problematic. A case could be made that it is acceptable for aspiring professionals or Olympians to spend this much time devoted to an activity, but even then many hobbies don't lend themselves to becoming lucrative professions (e.g., archery, chess, gardening, leisure reading, blogging).

However, most people are able to keep their video game playing to reasonable levels, even if it gets intense at times. Also, for a subset of people who do seem to be "addicted" or obsessed with video games, it is often the case that the excessive gaming is a symptom of some underlying issue (e.g., depression , social anxiety , autism spectrum disorder).

When people judge video games to be a waste of time, what most people probably mean is that there are better, more useful ways to spend one's time. However, this is a value judgment. To me, knitting would be a waste of time. If I really want a quilt, I can always buy one on Amazon. But for all the people who love to knit, more power to you!

I still enjoy playing video games. I have three boys who love video games too—perhaps a little more than I'd like sometimes! I do think there is value in having a range of activities and interests, but that's different than saying video games are a waste of time (or harmful). We have to be careful not to compare the time spent playing video games to some mythical ideal in which we, and our kids, always get the perfect amount of sleep, eat a balanced diet , meditate 30 minutes per day, get at least 10,000 steps per day, always wear sunscreen, learn a musical instrument and foreign language, read at least one book per week, and so on.

Yes, there are benefits to living a life in which we are meeting our needs through a range of activities. But we are a very resilient , adaptive species. We don't need ideal to thrive—we just need "good enough." The idea that we can lead a perfectly balanced life is a delusion. Even with this big caveat, a balanced life includes engaging in fun activities . For millions upon millions of people, playing video games represents an enjoyable hobby that has earned its rightful place as part of this balanced life.

The Topic and the Task

Remember to always analyze the question carefully. The topic should be fairly clear:

Remember to also look carefully to see if the topic is being narrowed down to a particular aspect of the topic. In this case it is:

Now you need to check what the task is. How many things do you have to write about?

Hopefully you realized there are three things that you can easily turn into brainstorming questions:

• What are the positive impacts of computer games on children?
• What are the negative impacts of computer games on children?
• How can the negative impacts be minimized?

Your answers to these questions will form your computer games essay.

You do not have much time and you have three things to answer, so one or two ideas for each is enough, as remember you will need to explain your ideas and give examples.

Now, take a look at the model answer.

Computer Games Essay Question:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Computer Games Essay Model Answer:

Access to computers has increased significantly over recent decades, and the number of children playing games on computers has increased too. This essay will consider the positive and negative impacts of this and discuss ways to avoid the potential negative effects.

With regards to the positive effects, playing computer games can develop children’s cognitive skills. Many popular games require abstract and high level thinking skills in order to win, skills that may not be taught at school. For example, children need to follow instructions, solve complex problems and use logic in many of the games that are currently popular. Such experience will be beneficial to a child’s progression into an adult.

However, concerns have been raised about the prolific use of computer games by children, much of this related to the violence they contain. The problem is that in many of the games children are rewarded for being more violent, and this violence is repeated again and again. For instance, many games involve children helping their character to kill, kick, stab and shoot. This may lead to increased aggressive feelings, thoughts, and behaviours.  

In order to minimize these negative impacts, parents need to take certain steps. Firstly, some video games are rated according to their content, so parents must check this and ensure their children are not allowed to have access to games that are unsuitable. Parents can also set limits on the length of time games are played. Finally, parents should also take an active interest in the games their children are playing so they can find out how they feel about what they are observing. 

To sum up, there are benefits of computer games, but there are disadvantages too. However, if parents take adequate precautions, the severity of these negative impacts can be avoided.

Are video games really a waste of time?

Maybe… but does it matter if it’s time you enjoy wasting?

I belong to a generation where gaming wasn’t a mainstream pastime, which makes me something of an outlier among my peers. This sadly means I’m now fairly well accustomed to having to defend my hobby from people who profess disbelief that anyone who isn’t a) a twelve-year-old or b) a white cis guy plays video games for fun.

It doesn’t matter how many times I politely point out that the global games industry is now worth more than the music and movie industries combined . It doesn’t matter if I remind them that the term “gamer” encompasses a thousand and one different types of people, from nightly raiders to Candy Crush -ers wasting time on their commute. Some will forever pigeon-hole gaming as a niche pastime, and pigeon-hole the people who play them, too.

They don’t ever go quite as far as voicing it aloud – although several people, perhaps unbelievably, have – but you can feel the disapproval radiating off them like the dull heat of an inflamed tooth. Unlike cinephiles or literary fans who are praised for their noble, highbrow pursuits, gamers lie at the bottom of the fandom pile. To those who grew up without it, gaming is thought to be nothing but a colossal waste of time.

Which is precisely what Joe Rogan declared on his podcast this week, a one minute clip that swept across social media. Timelines melted under the weight of the heated responses, whereas in my case, I just sat at my desk, phone in hand, and frowned. Because… well, he’s right, isn’t he?

Games are a waste of time. Some games are even specifically designed to be a waste of time. But gaming isn’t any more wasteful than reading a book is, for instance, or watching a movie. It’s also no less, either.

Admittedly, games take up more time – it took me 80 hours to complete Assassin’s Creed Origins and, to use Rogan’s own example, if I’d spent 80-hours learning Jujitsu instead it’d likely be no bad thing – but that doesn’t make games bad, does it? It just makes them different .

Trouble is, video games have spent so many years lying beyond the realm of acceptability – scorned and derided and steeped in unhelpful stereotypes – we’ve collapsed under the weight of trying to get our hobby taken as seriously as other forms of entertainment. We frantically push for games to be accepted as a valid and celebrated art form because they very much can be a valid and celebrated art form, but that doesn’t mean they can’t also be a waste of time. It doesn’t mean they can’t be complete dogshit.

Like any other hobby anywhere on the face of the planet, there are good points and bad points, and there are positives and negatives. Some movies and books and songs might change your life. Some won’t. The same can be said for just about any hobby, including video games.

Rogan’s minute-long rant also touched on how unhealthy it can be to play video games obsessively, and while I won’t accept its a problem unique to gaming, I can’t help but concur that we should do more to spread awareness and support of gaming addiction.

While the organisations that defend the industry are fighting valiantly to have “gaming disorder” stricken from the WHO’s International Classification Of Diseases, most of us either know someone – or know firsthand – that some games are difficult to stop playing. We know games can infringe on your ability to work or spend time with the people you love. But that means we need better support from clinicians and the industry itself, and not throw the baby out with the bathwater. How does vilifying gaming help? And surely doing anything for prolonged periods – be it gaming or otherwise – is problematic?

The fact is, games can be life-changing, in good and bad ways. People have met their partners playing games. Others have formed life-long friendships that led them away from self-harm and suicide ideation. Many games are effective stress relievers – in fact, were it not for online co-op, millions of people would not have been able to remain connected to their loved ones during the global pandemic.

Games are unique in their interactivity and enable us to live and connect with perspectives wholly different from our own and enhance a myriad of skills, improving short-term memory, dexterity, reaction speeds, and even improve our physical fitness. There’s so much more good than bad here.

To be honest, I don’t believe that anyone who spends 15 hours a week practising karate is any more likely to go on to an industrious career in the martial arts than a girl in her bedroom playing Call Of Duty for 15 hours a week will go on to play competitively. But the fact is, it doesn’t matter.

It doesn’t matter if you never earn a penny from playing games. All that does matter is that you enjoy it… and as the old adage goes, the time you enjoy wasting is not wasted.

There are many things that contribute to this, including diets lacking in nutritional value. However, too little activity is the other leading factor.

It is crucial to note, that a lack of exercise will contribute to obesity at any age. Getting a good amount of exercise is especially vital in a child’s formative years. This is imperative to remember because video games can lead children and teens to spend more time in their rooms sitting in front of a console or on their computer.

Though video games themselves are not evil, they can lead children and teens to spend less time outside getting the exercise they need. Limiting the amount of time your kids spend playing video games throughout the day forces them to take part in other activities. Some of which will hopefully get them moving and prevent weight gain.

Childhood obesity comes with its own share of risks, more serious than just weight gain. If obesity in childhood is not reversed or delayed, it can lead to many health problems that will plague your child for their entire lives, such as:

Your child will likely not suffer from a stroke or heart disease. However, if your child develops childhood obesity and does not change their habits and get healthy, all of these diseases could potentially find them as they grow up.

While video games cannot be held directly responsible for the above diseases. The sedentary lifestyle one has when playing video games all day long is absolutely related to the health problems that arise.

Video Games Can Cause Other Physical Problems

Childhood obesity is, of course, a concern for any parent. However, numerous other physical issues can arise from sitting in front of a screen all day playing video games. Leading a sedentary lifestyle can cause weight gain but sitting for too long also has other negative effects.

Maintaining a seated position for hours on end can cause even young people to have problems with their hips and backs. Though your child may be young, sitting for extended periods of time, especially with poor posture, leads to compression of the joints and can cause many issues that will plague them for a lifetime if not corrected.

Another common issue is computer vision syndrome. This issue arises when a person’s eyes become fatigued after staring at a computer screen for too long. This time may vary depending on many factors. For example, on certain days, a student may come home with a little more homework than normally. Some schools may also be more hands-on, meaning students do not need to study at home as much. Another consideration is that some students may need to study more than others to reach the same results.

Regardless, spending too much time playing video games keeps children of any age from taking care of other important tasks and responsibilities. This can impact their performance and keep them from making progress. Falling behind in school can set them up for failure. Setting limits so you know they have time to get homework and studying done is important.

This is why it is critical to ensure your children and teens are getting enough sleep. It is true that children have more energy and fewer responsibilities, but that does not change what they need from a biological standpoint. If you believe video games are cutting into your child’s sleep time, setting hard limits on how much they play should be a priority.

Agree or disagree, and why? Playing computer games is a waste of time. Children should not be allowed to play them.

Although playing video games is popular among children and many parents are permissive with their kids about this activity, it is true that video games are not so beneficial for everyone. If I were a parent, I would restrict this activity for my children. Consequently, I strongly agree with the statement due to the following reasons.

First of all, computer games don't help to develop social skills and are detrimental to school performance. In fact, nowadays computer games are seen as a great factor that contributes to the isolation of children. Research conducted by The University of California, Los Angeles indicates that children who play computer games every day tend to have fewer friends than those who perform this activity two times a week or less. Furthermore, the latter group has better grades in general due to the fact that they have more time to study or to finish their homework for school. As they have less time to study, their learning process is of lower quality and, as a result, they get bad grades.

Second, if I had children, I would encourage them to practice sports instead of playing video games. I believe that physical activity is essential in our lives. Especially sports that are practiced in a team, such as basketball, volleyball, or soccer, among others. Instead of sitting on the couch or at your desk in front of a screen and playing in a virtual reality, you could be breathing fresh air exercising, talking with new people, or strengthening your friendships in a healthy way. Personally, when I was a child, I rarely played computer games. I preferred playing soccer with my neighbors. Every Tuesday we used to gather in a soccer pitch two blocks from home, and we would kick the ball for several hours. I believe this healthy hobby helped me to keep fit and grow well.

Third, children may waste several hours in front of their computers, and this hobby may become a vice. I have known many cases in which parents with their children have had to go to the psychologist because of computer games. Kids don't realize the valuable time that they are wasting. For instance, my cousin failed his first year at high school since he spent so many hours playing online instead of studying.

In summary, from my point of view, playing computer games is a waste of time and should be a restricted activity as it is not favorable for your health, grades at school, and social skills.
