World Environment Day Essay

100 Words Essay On World Environment Day

World Environment Day is a global event celebrated each year on 5 June. It's a day when people from all walks of life come together to celebrate our environment and take action to protect it. The day was first celebrated in 1972 after the United Nations General Assembly declared that it should be observed as an annual event. The goal of World Environment Day is to encourage people to take positive environmental action and to raise awareness about the issues our planet faces. In recent years, the focus of World Environment Day has shifted towards climate change and its effects on the environment.

200 Words Essay On World Environment Day

Every year, on June 5th, the world celebrates World Environment Day. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the state of our planet and the importance of taking care of our environment. It was first celebrated in 1974 and has since been observed by countries all over the world.

The theme for World Environment Day 2022 was ‘Only One Earth’ with the focus on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”. World Environment Day 2022 was hosted by Sweden. The campaign encourages people all over the world to live sustainably while highlighting climate action, environmental action, and pollution action.

While the consumer decisions we make on an individual basis certainly have an impact, it is our collective efforts that will bring about the profound environmental transformation we require to move toward a more sustainable and just world where everyone may thrive.

Every World Environment Day is an opportunity to reflect on our role in creating a more sustainable future. We can all do something to make a difference, and the cumulative impact of many small actions can be significant. We should all work together to protect our planet and ensure that future generations can enjoy its beauty and resources just as much as we did.

500 Words Essay On World Environment Day

World Environment Day is a day that encourages us all to become activists and take positive steps in improving air quality, reducing waste, preserving ocean life, and protecting threatened species. It’s a reminder of our collective responsibility to care for Mother Earth and protect it for future generations.

How to Celebrate World Environment Day

There are plenty of ways to celebrate World Environment Day, and it really depends on what you're most interested in. If you want to do something hands-on, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer with local organisations or get involved in cleanup events. You could also plant a tree, or join in a march or rally to raise awareness for environmental concerns.

If you're more of a learn-and-do kind of person, you can find plenty of great educational resources online or at your local library. You can also attend workshops and panel discussions to learn more about how you can make a difference. Furthermore, you can always reduce your own environmental impact by making small changes in your everyday life.

Challenges Of Achieving Environmental Sustainability

As it stands, achieving environmental sustainability presents many challenges. One of the primary issues is that environmental degradation is caused not just by local, individual human behaviour, but is often a result of global industrial systems and large-scale capitalist businesses. This means that those who can have the biggest impact rarely feel the most immediate consequences, and it’s up to us to enforce better practices for the whole planet.

Another challenge is that even if we can get large entities on board with implementing sustainable practices, these changes may take years to fully implement and take effect. Additionally, individual human behaviour tends to be hard to change as we are creatures of habit; this makes it increasingly difficult to get people to really make an effort in changing how they interact with their environment. We can't just talk about making environmental changes—we have to implement them.

Lastly, there's the issue of resources not being balanced or distributed evenly—many areas are already running very low on resources such as water or food, and implementing sustainable practices in these kinds of regions will be even more difficult than in areas with resource availability. All these challenges mean that proper dedication needs to be given in order to make real progress towards a sustainable future for our planet.

How You Can Make Your Contribution

World Environment Day is a global movement that unites citizens from across the world to take action to protect and preserve our planet. This annual event, started in 1974 by the United Nations, helps us all understand how our actions can help in making our environment healthier and cleaner.

There are plenty of ways you can help make a difference on this special day. From organising or taking part in clean-up events, planting trees, or encouraging your community or family to reduce their energy use and conserve water—the possibilities are endless. You could also support environmental organisations by donating or volunteering with them. Taking those small steps will bring us closer to creating a healthier planet.

Significance of World Environment Day

World Environment day is celebrated on the 5th of June every year. More than 100 countries Worldwide join in the celebration of the World Environment day. It was started by the United Nations Environmental Program in the year 1973 and has been continuing till now. The main purpose of celebrating this day is to spread awareness about the Environment.

What is Environment?

Scientifically speaking, everything around us constitutes our Environment. Both living and non-Types of the Equation of the Motion living things make up our Environment. The living or biotic components include plants, animals and microbes, while the non-living or abiotic components include air, water, soil and so on.

Why is the Environment in Danger?

The Environment is in danger because of the high levels of pollution. All the major components of the Environment such as the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, the biosphere, all are trapped with pollutants. The rising level of pollutants is destroying the normal Environmental conditions.

This type of pollutants can be natural (for example volcanic eruptions, forest fires etc) or manmade (pollutants released from industries, emissions from cars). It is mainly man made pollution that has caused rapid destruction of the Environment. The major forms of pollution are air pollution, water pollution and soil pollution.

Why is it Necessary to Save the Environment?

The Environment is one of the most important tools for our survival on planet Earth. The Environment nurtures us and helps us survive. We cannot imagine life without air, water and soil. The biotic components like plants and animals are also important survival tools. Plants help purify the air around us. We get food from plants and animals.

All the components of the Environment are dependent on each other in a web of relations known as the ecological web. It is necessary to maintain this web in balance because if one component collapses then the entire web will crumble destroying all life forms. This is why we must choose to work towards preserving the Environment and undoing the damage we did.

What do we do on World Environment Day?

The main purpose of the World Environment day is to spread awareness about the current conditions of the Environment. On this day people come together to join in efforts to improve our life. Every year there is one theme or Environmental problem which is focused upon and a pledge to combat that problem is taken that year. For example for the year 2019, the theme was air pollution.

Organizations all around the World come together on this day, to take small steps to improve our future. Schools and offices encourage workers and students to plant trees or clean up some local land. These small efforts can leave a big impact on the Environment.

To improve the Environmental conditions the government and the international organizations must come together to fight the problems and save our Environment. Introducing stricter laws, condemning the use of plastics and planting more trees can help to curb pollution and help save the Environment. This can help spread awareness and help people lower the gravity of the pollution levels around them.

World Environment Day reminds us to consolidate our planet and ensure that the Environment is conserved at all costs. It illuminates the causes that cause the most damage in our Environment. For example, industries and industries play a major role in polluting. They reduce the amount of air we breathe and the water we consume.

Therefore, this Day serves as an eye-opener for many citizens who are unaware of all this. In other words , it spreads awareness to ordinary people about the current situation. In addition, it also encourages the community from different communities and communities to play an active role in celebrating this Day.

In addition, it also encourages them to be active in developing Environmental protection measures. Not only that, but it also encourages everyone to keep their Environment safe and clean so that everyone has a clean, green and prosperous future.

Eight Simple Things that can help to Protect the Earth

Reduce, reuse, and recycle - Reduce is the waste that you throw away. Follow the three "Rs" to conserve natural resources and a landfill.

Volunteers - Volunteer to clean up your community. You can take part in protecting your water Environment, too.

Education - As you further your education, you can help others understand the value and importance of our natural resources.

Save water - The water you use is low, decreases the flow and polluted water eventually seeps into the sea.

Shop wisely - Buy a small plastic bag and carry a reusable shopping bag.

Use durable lights - Energy-efficient lamps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And turn off the light when you leave the room!

Plant a tree - Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help fight climate change.

Do not send chemicals into our water - Choose non-toxic chemicals at home and in the office.

Protect the environment, prevent pandemics, ‘nature is sending us a clear message’

A woman poses in a field in Ardabil, Iran.

On this year’s World Environment Day , celebrated on June 5, the UN is drawing links between the health of the planet, and human health, and highlighting the importance of protecting biodiversity, the system that supports life.

“At least 70 per cent of emerging infectious diseases” such as COVID-19 , are crossing from the wild, to people, and “transformative actions are urgently required to protect environment and human rights”. This was the message from David Boyd, the independent UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment, ahead of this year’s Day.

Mr. Boyd added that countries should take urgent action to protect the environment and stop climate disruption, biodiversity loss, toxic pollution and diseases that jump from animals to humans.

Get the message

UN chief António Guterres said in his message that “nature is sending us a clear message. We are harming the natural world, to our own detriment.”

He noted that habitat degradation and biodiversity loss were accelerating, “climate disruption is getting worse…To care for humanity, we must care for nature.”

Time for natureSince World Environment Day was launched in 1974, it has grown to become the UN’s biggest annual event, advocating for environmental action and raising worldwide awareness of the need to increase protection for the planet’s long-term survival.

The 2020 edition, which has the tagline “Time for Nature”, is being hosted by Colombia, which is organizing several events, streamed live, which can be accessed here, or on social media. The theme is biodiversity protection, at a time when one million animal and plant species are believed to be on the brink of extinction.

This year’s Day inevitably references the global COVID-19 health crisis, noting that, with the population doubling over the past 50 years, and the global economy growing fourfold over the same period, the delicate balance of nature has been disrupted, creating ideal conditions for pathogens, such as COVID-19, to spread.

As countries open up, and governments approve stimulus packages to support job creation, poverty reduction, development and economic growth, the UN Environment Programme ( UNEP ), is urging them to “build back better”.

This involves capturing opportunities for green investment — such as renewable energy, smart housing, green public procurement, and public transport — guided by the principles and standards of sustainable production and consumption.

A failure to do so, warns UNEP, and an attempted return to business as usual, risks seeing inequalities rising even further, and a worsening of the degradation of the planet, at a time when one million animal and plant species are on the brink of extinction.

We’re running out of time to save our planet - using up the equivalent of 1.6 Earths to maintain our current way of life - and nature simply cannot keep up with our demands. That’s the message from the organizers of World Environment Day 2022 on 5 June.

What is World Environment Day?

First held in 1973, World Environment Day is described as “a global platform for inspiring positive change” by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the organization that created it.

It is now the largest global environmental event, with millions of people in more than 150 countries participating. The idea is to engage “governments, businesses, civil society, schools, celebrities, cities and communities [in] raising awareness and celebrating environmental action”.

The 2022 World Environment Day, hosted by Sweden, campaigns for “collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet”, encouraging everyone, everywhere, to live sustainably and take action on the climate crisis.

This year marks 50 years since the first global environment summit. The 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm led to the founding of UNEP .

An close view of an insect

UNEP says that, despite a raft of climate agreements, progress towards halting climate change is still too slow and individuals and civil society must play a key role in raising awareness and urging governments and the private sector to make large-scale changes.

Closing the adaptation gap

The cost of climate change is rising, says Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP, as is the gap between what is being spent to adapt to climate change and what is needed . As recently as 2014, the cost of adaptation in developing nations was estimated at $100 billion a year . Today that figure is $500 billion .

To limit the rise in global temperature, which is driving climate change, to 1.5C, worldwide CO2 emissions will need to halve by 2030, UNEP says. If there is no change in current plans, temperatures will be 2.7C higher by the end of the century .

Climate change poses an urgent threat demanding decisive action. Communities around the world are already experiencing increased climate impacts, from droughts to floods to rising seas. The World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report continues to rank these environmental threats at the top of the list.

To limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C and as close as possible to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, it is essential that businesses, policy-makers, and civil society advance comprehensive near- and long-term climate actions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The World Economic Forum's Climate Initiative supports the scaling and acceleration of global climate action through public and private-sector collaboration. The Initiative works across several workstreams to develop and implement inclusive and ambitious solutions.

This includes the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders, a global network of business leaders from various industries developing cost-effective solutions to transitioning to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy. CEOs use their position and influence with policy-makers and corporate partners to accelerate the transition and realize the economic benefits of delivering a safer climate.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2022 rated climate action failure as the most severe risk facing the world over the next decade, a risk it said had been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is Earth Overshoot Day?

Another way of measuring how humanity is using Earth’s resources faster than they can be replaced is Earth Overshoot Day , the day in the year on which the world stops living sustainably. The earlier in the year it falls, the more unsustainable life on Earth becomes.

It is calculated annually by the Global Footprint Network (GFN) by dividing the amount of resources Earth can generate in a given year by human demand for resources in that year. In 2021 it was 29 July. The global slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic pushed 2020 Earth Overshoot Day back to 22 August. The date for 2022 has yet to be calculated.

For World Environment Day 2022, the theme #OnlyOneEarth, which was used at the first global environment gathering in 1972, is being revived. Sweden will also host an international conference called Stockholm+50 to accelerate climate action.

Across the world, events are planned from seminars and concerts to beach and countryside clean-ups. Brussels will be staging a city environment festival , while Mumbai will stage the Green Ride Cyclothon to promote a more sustainable way to travel.

World Environment Day

The United Nations designated 5 June as World Environment Day to highlight that the protection and health of the environment is a major issue, which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world. The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment.

The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics, with the first major conference on environmental issues, known as the  Conference on the Human Environment , or the Stockholm Conference. Later that year, on 15 December, the General Assembly adopted a resolution ( A/RES/2994 (XXVII) ) designating June 5 as World Environment Day and urging "Governments and the organizations in the United Nations system to undertake on that day every year world-wide activities reaffirming their concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment, with a view to deepening environmental awareness."

"As 2021 marks the beginning of United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, led jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and with which UNESCO is closely associated, the formidable reservoir of experience accumulated in our biosphere reserves will now be of service to the world."

UNESCO Director-General

UNESCO's work on environmental issues

UNESCO has an important track record in advancing ecological sciences through pioneering work on ecosystems, biosphere reserves, capacity building, scientific assessments and policy briefs to assist decision-makers in managing natural resources sustainably. UNESCO mobilizes the knowledge, know-how and practices of local communities and indigenous peoples to support their inclusion in environmental decision-making. Its World Network of Biosphere Reserves demonstrate ways to safeguard natural ecosystems and biodiversity through science, education and participatory approaches while promoting innovative economic development that is environmentally sustainable and socially and culturally appropriate.

"UNESCO will be responsible for the "Humans in Nature" panel, which will expand and extend the avenues that have been explored for the past 50 years in our biosphere reserves in order to prevent the degradation of ecosystems worldwide."

A logo advertising World Environment Day.

The ecosystem in which we live and extract our source of livelihood is essential to our health and that of other species, quality of life, and survival. It is the responsibility of every person, whether great or small, to take care of the environment, not only for now but also for posterity. The environment is a major concern when a society is faced with issues such as economic crisis, war, and other social problems. Several organizations including the United Nation Environmental Program are at the forefront in promoting activities towards the conservation the environment. One of the initiatives by the United Nations is the World Environment Day.

World Environment Day

The World Environmental Day is observed every year on June 5. It is an important vehicle through which the UN and other environmental agencies create awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and action. WED is not a public holiday but a day set aside to focus on the environment. It was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 during the opening of the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment. The resolution was adopted on the same day by the General Assembly, leading to the creation of United Nation Environmental Program. World Environmental Day is hosted annually in different cities. The week of June 5 is often packed with environmental-related activities.

Background of the WED

1972 is considered a turning point in the growth of the international environmental politics. The UN organized a major environmental conference in Stockholm from June 5 to June 16, 1972. It was dubbed “Conference on Human Environment” and the objective was to come up with ways of addressing the challenges of conserving and promoting the human environment. On December 15, 1972, the General Assembly adopted a resolution designating June 5 as the World Environment Day. Government and organizations working with the UN were encouraged to organize activities that reaffirm their commitment to preserving and enhancing the environment.

The first WED was observed on June 5, 1974. Since then, the UNEP has helped raise awareness around growing environmental concerns such as depletion of ozone layer, pollution, and global warming. The aim of the WED is to give a face to environmental issues and also make people active agents of fair and sustainable development.

How is World Environmental Day Celebrated?

The World Environment Day is celebrated in different ways across the globe. The celebration involves several activities such as concerts, street rallies, tree planting, and clean-up activities among other activities. In several countries, the annual event is aimed at enhancing political attention and activities towards improving the environment. The observance of the WED also provides an opportunity for the signing and ratification of International Environmental Convention. Individuals and groups are also encouraged to explore the amazing species in their everyday life and the nature they love.

The main colors featured on the World Environment Day are the natural colors depicting nature and the Earth. The colors are often green, blue, and brown. Images of several features of the earth such as mountains, clean and unpolluted rivers, beaches, and photos of natural plants and animals are often used to promote activities supporting the day.

Essay On World Environment Day – 10 Lines, Short And Long Essay For Children

Key Points To Remember When Writing An Essay On World Environment Day For Lower Primary Classes

10 lines on world environment day for kids, a paragraph on world environment day, short essay on world environment day in english for children, long essay on world environment day for kids, what will your child learn from the essay on world environment day.

The increased levels of competition in the education system these days start as early as the lower primary classes. This has increased the necessity to have good writing and language skills for kids. A good way to begin this is by practising commonly asked essay topics. Here is how you can approach an essay on environment day for classes 1, 2 and 3.

The environment is everything that surrounds us. It includes natural, living, manufactured, and non-living things. It is imperative to keep our surroundings clean to maintain a healthy and livable environment. Due to industrialisation, deforestation, construction, and increased vehicles on the road, an imbalance in the environment has occurred, and it has become important to reduce environmental pollution to restore the ecosystem.

Writing an essay can be a complicated task, especially for young children. Hence it lies in the hands of parents and teachers to guide them appropriately to create a strong foundation of writing and vocabulary. Here are certain guidelines on how to write an essay on World Environment Day.

  • Always start your essay with a short introduction or an introductory paragraph, irrespective of the length.
  • Maintain good readability and avoid words and sentences that are too complex.
  • Keep your points straight.
  • In case of longer articles, make sure to maintain good continuity between your paragraphs.
  • Use appropriate subheadings and paragraph breaks whenever needed.

The format of simple sentence lists is the most preferred for lower primary classes. One can write such articles quite easily. Here is how you can write an essay for classes 1 and 2 on World Environment Day.

  • World Environment Day celebrations take place worldwide.
  • Over 140 countries are known to participate in this event actively.
  • The objective of this day is to promote and celebrate the conservation of our environment.
  • It is observed every year on the 5th of June.
  • The United Nations declared the 5th of June to be celebrated as World Environment Day in 1972.
  • Many organisations like schools, colleges, and government and non-government units organise activities like planting saplings on this day.
  • Many groups also perform activities to promote awareness of the importance of caring for the environment.
  • In many schools, this event is celebrated in a grand manner.
  • Many students actively participate in fun activities like cultural and fine arts competitions.
  • This day is vital to improving the state of our environment.

Apart from lists and 10-line articles, your child might also be asked to write short and crisp paragraphs as an assignment for lower primary classes. In such cases, you will have to maintain simplicity with good flow in your sentences. Here is an example:

The environment is one of the most precious resources given to us by mother nature. With the increasing population, this valuable present is being subjected to severe harm caused by the human race. Multiple steps have been taken up by the concerned organisations to combat the same. One such endeavour which was taken up by the United Nations is World Environment Day. The 5th of June was officially declared to be observed as World Environment Day, and it was celebrated for the first time in the year 1974. The ultimate goal is to create awareness of the importance of conservation and protection of our environment.

As the classes progress, you will have to upgrade the complexity of the essays. When writing in long paragraphs and sections, you will have to include more facts as well. Here is a sample essay for the same.

The environment is a precious gift bestowed upon us by mother nature. This gift is being abused to a great degree, especially in recent days. It is important to understand the value of the environment and protect it. To bring about a sense of care and protection towards the environment, many renowned organisations worldwide have started taking up active measures to promote the general awareness of the public towards environmental conservation. One such initiative is the declaration of World Environment Day. The United Nations announced that this day would be celebrated on the 5th of June every year, starting from 1972. Promoting a sense of protection and care for the environment among people is its main purpose. Many institutions like schools, colleges, NGOs, and government organisations take up measures to contribute to the conservation of the environment, like planting saplings and more. It is the responsibility of every individual to participate in such activities regularly and actively.

As the classes progress further, the students are required to write more elaborate and detailed articles with multiple headings within, including several paragraphs. In this case, additional attention has to be given to the proper framing of subheadings and division of paragraphs. It is also important to maintain a good continuity between your sentences. Here is how you can write a good essay for class 3.

The environment has to be cherished and protected by every inhabitant on the planet earth. But, this has not been the case, especially in recent years, resulting in significant damage to the overall state of the environment. For the same reason, many renowned establishments and organisations around the world have started taking up measures to combat this. One such activity is World Environment Day, which is celebrated all over the globe on the 5th of June every year.

What Is The Environment, And Why Is It Important To Save It?

The word environment means surroundings or the condition in which the person, animal, or plant lives or functions. The environment is of utmost importance in the overall living standards and the survival of various life on this planet. In the absence of a good and healthy environment, life will not be as easy and convenient. Hence, it is important as an individual to take it upon oneself to act responsibly and take care of the environment.

Protecting the precious environment can only be achieved through the individual effort put in by every person on the planet. Therefore, it is important to create such awareness of the conservational activities on this day.

What Is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day is a special day that has been allotted specifically by the United Nations to be directed towards creating awareness towards protecting and nurturing the environment. This can be achieved in several different forms and methods.

It is also good to know the history and importance of World Environment Day, which is very interesting.

The United Nations declared that the 5th of June would be celebrated as World Environment Day in 1972. Accordingly, it has been celebrated on the same day globally in about 142 countries. The main goal of this day is to create awareness of why it is important to protect and conserve the environment.

Why Is World Environment Day Celebrated?

Few firms and institutions take up promotional activities and contests which tend to create awareness among the general public regarding the importance of conserving the environment.

At this point, with several global hazards like global warming and more, measures to protect the environment have never been more important. On World Environment Day, several individuals and teams gather to participate in various activities to work together with the sole aim of benefitting the environment as a whole.

How Can This Day Be Celebrated?

As a way of instilling qualities of care and respect towards the environment from a young age, many schools make their students actively conduct and participate in a wide range of interesting and entertaining activities like essay writing on World Environment Day, speech competitions, and more. Many institutions and business firms perform activities like planting saplings and trees to directly take part in contributing to the wellness of the environment.

By writing about the World Environment Day and the importance of the environment, your children will be able to understand the importance of acting reasonably and conservatively towards the environment. As they write an environment day composition, they will know more about the reasons and importance of celebrating Environment Day as a separate entity. This also brings about awareness of the global issue starting from a very young age.

To wrap things up, it is safe to say that these articles are great sources of knowledge that help is more than just a single dimension. By starting such efforts right from lower primary education, the students tend to develop more holistically with the simultaneous knowledge obtained. With these articles being focused on important issues, events, people, and more, the children tend to gain quite an amount of information through these simple compositions.

Everything You Need to Know About Earth Day 2024

By Emily Chan

As the climate crisis becomes ever more serious, each Earth Day that comes along takes on extra significance. Established in 1970 in the US, the annual event brings together millions of people from around the world in support of the environment, highlighting the urgent action we need to take to save our planet.

Earth Day 2024 comes as a worrying new report found that global concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—the top three heat-trapping gases—reached a record high again in 2023. Meanwhile, a separate study found that Antarctica saw an astonishing rise of 38.5 degrees Celsius above its average seasonal temperature back in 2022, leading to major concerns about the alarming rate at which global warming is affecting our planet.

That’s why it’s more important than ever that Earth Day is seen as a rallying cry for real action on the climate crisis. Want to ensure that you play your part? Here’s everything you need to know.

What is Earth Day?

Marked by millions around the world, Earth Day is an annual event designed to shine a light on the serious environmental problems we’re facing, from the climate crisis to air pollution and deforestation.

When is Earth Day 2024?

Earth Day takes place on April 22 every year, but the entire month of April (sometimes called Earth Month)—and especially the week running up to Earth Day (sometimes called Earth Week)—is a time when environmental issues take center stage.

Why is Earth Day on April 22?

Earth Day was the brainchild of US senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson, following a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California . He came up with the idea of having college teach-ins to highlight the importance of clean air and water, with April 22 chosen as a convenient date between Spring Break and finals.

Organizers decided to name the date Earth Day , with the first event in 1970 leading to an astonishing 20 million people across the US taking to the streets—around 10 percent of the country’s population at the time. The event undoubtedly had a major impact, with President Richard Nixon creating the Environmental Protection Agency just months later in December 1970, as well as signing the Clean Air Act.

Earth Day later became an international campaign in 1990, when environmental activists asked one of the original organizers, Denis Hayes , to help create another event to spotlight the ecological challenges facing our planet.

What is the Earth Day 2024 theme?

The theme for Earth Day 2024 is Planet v Plastics , highlighting the fact that 380 million tonnes of plastic are now produced every year—while only 9 percent of plastic ever produced has been recycled. Campaigners are now calling for a 60 percent reduction in plastic by 2040. “The Planet v Plastics campaign is a call to arms, a demand that we act now to end the scourge of plastics and safeguard the health of every living being upon our planet,” Kathleen Rogers, president of Earthday.org, explains.

How can you celebrate Earth Day?

There are thousands of events taking place around the world this Earth Day. You can find out what’s happening near you via this map , or even create your own event. Organizers have put together a number of ideas for celebrating Earth Day via its handy action tool kit , from avoiding single-use plastic to taking part in The Great Global Cleanup campaign. Other suggestions include signing the Global Plastics Treaty petition and saying no to fast fashion, the majority of which is made from plastic.

What else can you do to help the planet?

Of course, at Vogue we believe that every day should be Earth Day, so it’s vital that we continue to take action throughout the whole year. If you want to find out more about the challenges we’re facing, here are the books to read , the documentaries to watch, and the activists to follow .

Beyond that, here are some other ways you can live more sustainably , including making more eco-friendly fashion choices, switching to renewable energy, flying less, and eating less meat, fish, and dairy. ‘Simply mind-boggling’: world record temperature jump in Antarctic raises fears of catastrophe

An unprecedented leap of 38.5C in the coldest place on Earth is a harbinger of a disaster for humans and the local ecosystem

O n 18 March, 2022, scientists at the Concordia research station on the east Antarctic plateau documented a remarkable event. They recorded the largest jump in temperature ever measured at a meteorological centre on Earth. According to their instruments, the region that day experienced a rise of 38.5C above its seasonal average: a world record.

This startling leap – in the coldest place on the planet – left polar researchers struggling for words to describe it. “It is simply mind-boggling,” said Prof Michael Meredith, science leader at the British Antarctic Survey. “In sub-zero temperatures such a massive leap is tolerable but if we had a 40C rise in the UK now that would take temperatures for a spring day to over 50C – and that would be deadly for the population.”

This amazement was shared by glaciologist Prof Martin Siegert, of the University of Exeter. “No one in our community thought that anything like this could ever happen. It is extraordinary and a real concern,” he told the Observer . “We are now having to wrestle with something that is completely unprecedented.”

Poleward winds, which previously made few inroads into the atmosphere above Antarctica , are now carrying more and more warm, moist air from lower latitudes – including Australia – deep into the continent, say scientists, and these have been blamed for the dramatic polar “heatwave” that hit Concordia. Exactly why these currents are now able to plunge so deep into the continent’s air space is not yet clear, however.

Nor has this huge temperature hike turned out to be an isolated event, scientists have discovered. For the past two years they have been inundated with rising numbers of reports of disturbing meteorological anomalies on the continent. Glaciers bordering the west Antarctic ice-sheet are losing mass to the ocean at an increasing rate, while levels of sea ice, which float on the oceans around the continent, have plunged dramatically, having remained stable for more than a century.

These events have raised fears that the Antarctic, once thought to be too cold to experience the early impacts of global warming, is now succumbing dramatically and rapidly to the swelling levels of greenhouse gases that humans continue to pump into the atmosphere.

These dangers were highlighted by a team of scientists, led by Will Hobbs of the University of Tasmania, in a paper that was published last week in the Journal of Climate . After examining recent changes in sea ice coverage in Antarctica, the group concluded there had been an “abrupt critical transition” in the continent’s climate that could have repercussions for both local Antarctic ecosystems and the global climate system.

“The extreme lows in Antarctic sea ice have led researchers to suggest that a regime shift is under way in the Southern Ocean, and we found multiple lines of evidence that support such a shift to a new sea ice state,” said Hobbs.

The dramatic nature of this transformation was emphasised by Meredith. “Antarctic sea ice coverage actually increased slightly in the late 20th and early 21st century. However, in the middle of the last decade it fell off a cliff. It is a harbinger of the new ground with the Antarctic climate system, and that could be very troubling for the region and for the rest of the planet.”

The continent is now catching up with the Arctic, where the impacts of global warming have, until now, been the most intense experienced across the planet, added Siegert. “The Arctic is currently warming at four times the rate experienced by the rest of the planet. But the Antarctic has started to catch up, so that it is already warming twice as quickly as the planet overall.”

A key reason for the Arctic and Antarctic to be taking disproportionate hits from global warming is because the Earth’s oceans – warmed by fossil-fuel burning – are losing their sea ice at their polar extremities. The dark waters that used to lie below the ice are being exposed and solar radiation is no longer reflected back into space. Instead, it is being absorbed by the sea, further heating the oceans there.

“Essentially, it is a vicious circle of warming oceans and melting of sea ice, though the root cause is humanity and its continuing burning of fossil fuels and its production of greenhouse gases,” said Meredith. “This whole business has to be laid at our door.”

Ice covered peaks in Antarctica

As to the consequences of this meteorological metamorphosis, these could be devastating, researchers warn. If all the ice on Antarctica were to melt, this would raise sea levels around the globe by more than 60 metres. Islands and coastal zones where much of the world’s population now have homes would be inundated.

Such an apocalypse is unlikely to occur for some time, however. Antarctica’s ice sheet covers 14m square kilometres (about 5.4m square miles), roughly the area of the United States and Mexico combined, and contains about 30m cubic kilometres (7.2m cubic miles) of ice – about 60% of the world’s fresh water. This vast covering hides a mountain range that is nearly as high as the Alps, so it will take a very long time for that to melt completely, say scientists.

Nevertheless, there is now a real danger that some significant sea level rises will occur in the next few decades as the ice sheets and glaciers of west Antarctica continue to shrink. These are being eroded at their bases by warming ocean water and could disintegrate in a few decades. If they disappear entirely, that would raise sea levels by 5m – sufficient to cause damage to coastal populations around the world. How quickly that will happen is difficult to assess. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said that sea levels are likely to rise between 0.3m to 1.1m by the end of the century. Many experts now fear this is a dangerous underestimate. In the past, climate change deniers accused scientists of exaggerating the threat of global warming. However, the evidence that is now emerging from Antarctica and other parts of the world makes it very clear that scientists did not exaggerate. Indeed, they very probably underrated by a considerable degree the threat that now faces humanity.

“The picture is further confused in Antarctica because, historically, we have had problems getting data,” added Meredith. “We have never had the information about weather and ecosystem, compared with the data we get from the rest of the world, because the continent is so remote and so hostile. Our records are comparatively short and that means that the climate models we have created, although very capable, are based on sparse data. They cannot capture all of the physics, chemistry and biology. They can make predictions that are coherent but they cannot capture the sort of extremes that we’re now beginning to observe.”

The woes facing Antarctica are not merely of human concern, however. “We are already seeing serious ecological impacts that threaten to spread through the food chain,” said Prof Kate Hendry, a chemical oceanographer based at the British Antarctic Survey.

A critical example is provided by the algae which grow under and around sea ice in west Antarctica. This is starting to disappear, with very serious implications, added Hendry. Algae is eaten by krill, the tiny marine crustaceans that are one of the most abundant animals on Earth and which provide food for predators that include fish, penguins, seals and whales. “If krill starts to disappear in the wake of algae, then all sorts of disruption to the food chain will occur,” said Hendry.

The threat posed by the disappearance of krill goes deeper, however. They play a key role in limiting global warming. Algae absorb carbon dioxide. Krill then eat them and excrete it, the faeces sinking to the seabed and staying there. Decreased levels of algae and krill would then mean less carbon from the atmosphere would be deposited on the ocean floor and would instead remain near the sea surface, where it would return to the atmosphere.

“They act like a conveyor belt that takes carbon out of the atmosphere and carries it down to the deep ocean floor where it can be locked away. So if we start messing with that system, there could be all sorts of other knock-on effects for our attempts to cope with the impact of global warming,” added Hendry. “It is a scary scenario. Nevertheless that, unfortunately, is what we are now facing.”

Another victim of the sudden, catastrophic warming that has gripped the continent is its most famous resident: the emperor penguin. Last year the species, which is found only in Antarctica, suffered a catastrophic breeding failure because the platforms of sea ice on which they are born started to break up long before the young penguins could grow waterproof feathers.

“We have never seen emperor penguins fail to breed, at this scale, in a single season,” said Peter Fretwell, of the British Antarctic Survey. “The loss of sea ice in this region during the Antarctic summer made it very unlikely that displaced chicks would survive.”

Researchers say that the discovery of the loss of emperor penguins suggests that more than 90% of colonies will be wiped out by the end of the century, if global warming trends continue at their current disastrous rate. “The chicks cannot live on sea ice until they have fledged,” said Meredith. “After that, they can look after themselves. But the sea ice is breaking up before they reach that stage and mass drowning events are now happening. Colonies of penguins are being wiped out. And that’s a tragedy. This is an iconic species, one that is emblematic of Antarctica and the new vulnerability of its ecosystems.”

The crisis facing the continent has widespread implications. More than 40 nations are signatories of the Antarctic Treaty’s environmental protocol, which is supposed to shield it from a host of different threats, with habitat degradation being one of the most important. The fact that the continent is now undergoing alarming shifts in its ice covering, eco-systems and climate is a clear sign that this protection is no longer being provided.

“The cause of this ecological and meteorological change lies outside the continent,” added Siegert. “It is being caused because the rest of the world is continuing to emit vast amounts carbon dioxide.

“Nevertheless, there is a good case for arguing that if countries are knowingly polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse gases, and Antarctica is being affected as a consequence, then the treaty protocol is being breached by its signatories and their behaviour could be challenged on legal and political grounds. It should certainly make for some challenging meetings at the UN in the coming years.”
