Waste management is the call of duty for every 21st-century person on Earth. Wastes are the degradable remnants of our daily activities. It involves household chores, as well as factory dispositions. We are clearly aware of the volume of waste materials that are regularly generated and how carelessly they are disposed of.

Such attention to fewer actions of discarding wastes results in hazards to social and public health including plants and animals. But today waste management is a matter of concern with the increasing population on Earth. The urban expansions, the industrial growth, and the changes in our lifestyle and consumption are also a reason behind this. Waste management takes place through innovations in science and technology and is transformed into a new object of reuse and renovations.

Wastes produced on a daily basis are of several types. It can be solid such as household, laboratory, and industries’ wastes; liquid wastes such as chemicals, sewage, and pipes; and also gaseous wastes like smoke from chimneys of industries, tobacco smells, burning petroleum goods, vehicle emissions, forest fire, and others. Generally, wastes are classified also as biodegradable such as the waste products that come from plants and animals, and non-biodegradable like metals and plastics waste products that cannot be decomposed. All these are rectified through waste management procedures.

The household produces wastes, industries, factories, vehicles, and laboratories are chief sources of waste production. All these only ends up polluting the environment. The population along with developed lifestyle are again key reasons for waste generation on Earth. Thus urban areas produce a greater amount than rural places due to lesser modernisation of the surroundings and lifestyle.

Waste is unarguably a disaster to humankind and so it needs immediate attention and a proper management system. Ill disposal of wastes results in more than half of the pollution in a heavily populated country like India. In India, corporations and municipal bodies are responsible for maintaining this cleanliness and preserving public health. Generally, wastes are broadly categorised as solids, liquids, and gases. But for a greater facility, it is chiefly divided into biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes.

Biodegradable wastes include kitchen wastes, sanitary wastes, green wastes, and wastes from shops. But the more harmful form, the non-biodegradable wastes contain plastics, papers, all packaging and containers, metals, glass, rubber that cannot be decomposed naturally. These wastes stay in nature and prolong the harm to not only terrestrial creatures but also aquatic beings.

Hence management of the filth is very important. The general disposal methods may often prove unsustainable and serious. Thus waste management is now the call of the day. It is not just a local phenomenon, but also the attention of the states countries and the globe. This management involves at the base the segregation of the wastes and likewise disposing of it.

The principal method involved here is the method of ‘’ reuse, reduce, and recycle’’. Generally, the domestic wastes can be utilised as vermicompost and fertilizers for plants. But for the non-biodegradable wastes, the process involves a higher system. The waste dealers collect them and deposit them into factories that crush the wastes into pulps and recycles them into different, helpful materials. At present, the globe has engaged in not only recycling but also refusing to use materials that create a huge amount of wastes. Thus waste management is the solution of modern society and way to development.

Study shows how to improve management of municipal solid waste

Some 20,000 metric tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) are produced every day in metropolitan São Paulo (Brazil), with household trash accounting for 12,000 tons and street cleaning (mainly sweeping, open-air market refuse collection, pruning, and grass cutting) for 8,000 tons. This amount of household trash corresponds to about 1 kg per inhabitant per day.

The national composition of MSW is 50% organic matter , 35% recyclables, and 15% landfill refuse. Efficient MSW management, with the processing of organic waste to produce fertilizer and biogas, effective recycling of recyclables, and creative solutions to use part of the landfill refuse, would reduce Brazil's greenhouse gas emissions and serve as an additional source of revenue via the circular economy , which converts waste into resources.

However, the rate of MSW reuse is still very low in Brazil (2.2%).

"Improvements such as implementation of technologies that integrate composting, recycling, and use of methane from landfills to produce bioenergy could reduce the emissions from MSW management systems by 6%, as a highly conservative estimate, or 70% more optimistically."

"That would correspond to between 4.9 million and 57.2 million metric tons of CO 2 equivalent, for annual economic benefits of USD 44 million to USD 687 million in carbon credits ," said Michel Xocaira Paes, a researcher at Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) in São Paulo.

Paes is the first author of an article on the subject published in Habitat International .

"We studied MSW management in six Brazilian cities, four of which we selected to exemplify different routes to innovation in this area: Harmonia, São Paulo, Ibertioga, and Carauari. They are all very different in terms of geographical region, size, population, and Human Development Index (HDI), among other criteria. Their MSW management systems are also different, but each one has at least one highly interesting innovation," Paes told Agência FAPESP.

Harmonia and Ibertioga have very high rates of waste reuse (56% and 67% respectively). Harmonia, which is located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the South region, also features domestic composting and diverts almost half of its organic waste from MSW collection and treatment systems.

However, whereas MSW is managed by private enterprise in Harmonia, with a strong emphasis on environmental education and social participation in separating types of waste and in domestic composting for organic food production, MSW management in Ibertioga, Minas Gerais state, is entirely public.

The researchers found the governance of its local MSW management system to be robust and noted significant support from the state government for the implementation of sorting and composting units across the state. The results have been very positive in both cases.

São Paulo, the capital of São Paulo state in the Southeast, and Carauari in Amazonas, a state in the North, are worlds apart. São Paulo is the fifth most populous metropolitan area in the world, and half its population lives in São Paulo city. Everything there is huge, including the problems and their solutions.

"Waste reuse in São Paulo is better than the national average but still very low at only 3%," Paes said. "On the other hand, there are many innovations, such as strong participation by recycling collector co-ops, two material recovery facilities to separate recyclables, organic waste composting units, and power co-generation from landfill methane."

São Paulo has three sanitary landfills. Two are privately owned, and a third operates as a state concession. The world's third-largest sanitary landfill, in Caieiras, receives MSW from the northwestern area of the city, the CTL landfill receives MSW from the southeastern area, and the Pedreira landfill receives only street cleaning waste.

The Caieiras landfill has a biogas-fueled thermal power plant, where methane (CH 4 ) from decomposing organic matter drives electricity generators. CTL burns some of its CH 4 to produce CO 2 and steam (since CH 4 has 21 times the global warming potential of CO 2 ) and sends the rest to a thermal power plant with which it partners. In 2019, when the study was conducted, these two landfills had installed capacities of 8 megawatts (MW) and 29 MW, respectively.

Another important innovation is the installation of 125 collection points across the city. These are known as "ecopoints" and receive not just recyclables (paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metal) but also trimmings from household plants and trees, construction debris, and larger objects such as old furniture.

"The city also partners with associations of recyclable collectors, who do some separating and partial processing. In 2019, it had 24 co-ops with some 900 workers all told, as well as 1,400 self-employed collectors registered with the relevant municipal department," Paes explained.

Besides the innovations mentioned in the article, new initiatives have appeared in the city. These are relatively small-scale but can be replicated. For example, Realixo is a firm set up by young university graduates to promote environmental conservation, the circular economy and sustainability. Customers pay a monthly subscription to have their organic and recyclable waste collected by the firm, which separates what it can send to partners for composting or recycling.

At the opposite extreme of the urban spectrum, Carauari has 28,000 inhabitants—21,500 in the urban area and 6,500 in the rural area and forest. It is located on the Juruá River and is five days away by boat or two hours by plane from Manaus, the state capital.

"These distances are misleading. I didn't find an abandoned population there. On the contrary, they're highly organized, empowered, and engaged in community management of natural resources, economy and circular economy initiatives, and sustainability policies. Local associations and groups do a great deal in partnership with NGOs, universities, government, and private enterprise," Paes said.

A separate article on the study conducted in Carauari was published in Urban Sustainability , with detailed information on the activities of local communities, mainly Arapaima gigas fishery management and oilseed processing, all of which is integrated into a circular economy, so that waste from one activity becomes inputs for another instead of impacting the environment.

Oilseed hulls are composted, and almost all the arapaima (the giant fish also known as pirarucu) is used, with the viscera being ground up to make feed for turtles, the scales supplying material for jewelry, and the skin going into handcrafted bags, clothing, and footwear.

"There's no such thing as a magic wand to solve the waste problem, but in these four cities we found good practices that can be synthesized in a wide-ranging project with four pillars: local technical and political capacity; environmental education and social participation; collaboration among all three tiers of government [federal, state and municipal]; and local partnerships for innovation," Paes said.

"From these pillars we derived the proposal to create a national carbon credit fund that would be managed by the federal government with participation by states and municipalities. This fund could be used to support waste reduction initiatives [via domestic composting, for example], conversion of waste into resources via the circular economy, and development and implementation of local technologies for composting, recycling, and use of landfill biomethane."

"All this would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stimulate the low-carbon circular economy. It's a model that can be used throughout Brazil and inspire similar solutions in the other BRICS and developing countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia."

Addressing the plastic pollution crisis in the Philippines: New momentum

A growing middle class, increased consumer demand and a strong economic boom have spurred the Philippines’ economy in recent decades. This growth, positive in so many ways, has inadvertently fed a plastic pollution crisis.

In response, the government, academia and civil society have confronted the issue head on through studies, consultations, and awareness raising with support from the World Bank. This work has helped to build policies that govern the consumption, recovery and recycling of plastics.

In recent decades, the Philippines has made strides with comprehensive legislation such as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 and the National Plan of Action for the Prevention, Reduction, and Management of Marine Litter. While the Philippines has established these comprehensive laws and action plans to address the issue, more effective implementation and stakeholder involvement are necessary to achieve tangible results.

The Polluter Pays Principle

In 2023, a critical national law has been passed in the Philippines that advances this legal framework to combat plastic pollution much further. Titled the “Extended Producer Responsibility” (EPR) law, the legislation requires mandatory EPR for businesses with assets worth over ₱100 million. The law also encourages smaller businesses to voluntarily participate in the program. “The polluter pays” principle is central to EPR, obligating plastic packaging producers to assume full responsibility for the entire life cycle of their products, including waste management. This means that those who bring plastic packaging into the Philippine market must pay for the cost of waste prevention, clean up, and recovery measures.

Given the volume of plastic imported and manufactured for consumption, the country has not been able to catch up with its needs for reducing, recycling, and reusing (3Rs). Before enactment of the new law, the burden of managing waste was entirely on the shoulders of Local government Units (LGUs), who often lack the capacity to deal with the increasing waste on their own.

Under the new law, businesses can recover their plastic packaging waste and offset their plastic footprint by undertaking recovery schemes, establishing hubs for collection of waste, partnering with LGUs to recover plastic waste and establishing industrial scale recycling centers, among others. This polluter pays principle eases the LGU’s burden.

Reviewing Korea’s Pollution Playbook

The World Bank is supporting early implementation of the law with technical assistance, including the recently published report, “ Combating Plastic Waste Crisis in the Philippines ,” which analyzes Korea’s EPR system and distills lessons learned to inform EPR implementation in the Philippines.  

Recognizing a growing waste management crisis, Korea introduced policies, regulations and enforcement, effectively reducing its plastic waste and increasing recycling over the past 20 years.

Several factors enabled the success of its EPR system for plastic waste, some of which can guide the Philippines. Recommendations include awareness raising, managing waste effectively, proper separation, and putting the burden of cost on plastic producers to finance collection, sorting and recycling. The success of the EPR law and enforcement in the Philippines will depend on increasing the number of waste collection and recycling facilities paid for by the plastic producers.  The enforcement of these fees will finance a new level of waste management infrastructure.

While valuable lessons can be gleaned from Korea, notable differences also exist. There are more than 2,000 inhabited islands in the Philippines, many of which lack infrastructure and services. The well-being and future livelihoods of informal waste collectors remain a crucial gap to be addressed.

Policy makers can achieve meaningful improvements in the waste management system and significantly reduce polluting plastic waste if lessons from successfully operating EPR systems such as Korea’s are taken into consideration, and the waste management gaps in the Philippines effectively addressed.

With a clear governance framework and reliable financial flows, the enterprises that generate plastic packaging are now in the business of responsibly recovering plastic from trash and waterways and placing it into managed waste systems. This law, though years in the making, marks the beginning of aggressive measures to reduce the amount of plastic waste being generated in the Philippines.  The benefits of this law will extend beyond the Philippines, reducing marine plastic waste in shared seas and oceans.

Recycle construction waste to curb climate change: Bengaluru-based NGO

The green building certification lists that 85-95% of the recycling rate should be achieved during construction but doesn’t.

BENGALURU: Construction waste is a major problem that persists in India, however, none of the stakeholders including builders, developers and individuals buying commercial and residential spaces are inclined to convert the debris into resourceful materials that can reduce building costs.

To address this, Bengaluru-based NGO Saahas Zero Waste (SZW) partnered with Space Matrix, a design consultancy firm to ensure sustainable disposal of construction waste across its projects. The initiative, Re:Source, aims to integrate circular economy concepts into construction and demolition (C&D) waste management in India starting with Bengaluru and a few other cities.

The firm will segregate construction waste at the source level after which Saahas with minimal processing through its partners convert the waste into the same or other types of materials. This recycling will have a positive impact on the environment and be cost-effective for stakeholders. Usually, construction materials cost 50-60 percent of a project’s budget.

Akshay Lakhanpal, CEO, Space Matrix, said, “Despite existing policy frameworks like the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules, 2016, responsible disposal remains a daunting challenge in India. Through our collaboration, we have taken proactive steps to lead this change. We discussed the project’s objective and details with our clients, and they were completely on board to work with us to reduce the environmental impact of the construction waste and comply with the regulations.”

In its pilot project for a brownfield fit-out (already constructed land) in the city for an area which spanned 19,570 square feet, it generated over 43 tonnes of waste between August and November 2023. During the project use of effective recycling and reuse methodologies resulted in a 48 per cent reduction in landfill waste. There was also a reduction of 15.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions, 20.5 tonnes of materials were recycled, and 0.4 tonnes were sent for co-processing.

Currently, India accounts for 35 percent to 40 percent of construction waste globally, but just about 1% of the waste materials are recycled, and the rest end up in landfills. The green building certification lists that 85-95% of the recycling rate should be achieved during construction but doesn’t.

“The segregated waste can be of different types such as plywood, concrete, ceiling and floor tiles, insulation frameworks and more. In the future, we want to be able to build a robust ecosystem where we can recycle this material and use it in our own projects so that we become completely sustainable. Currently, there are limitations and loopholes in the system that need to be addressed,” said Sandhya Hegde, Head -Operations, Sustainable Solutions, Space Matrix.

Meanwhile, Shobha Raghavan, COO Saahas Zero Waste, speaking about the urgency for recycling said in the context of India’s overall C&D waste, these circular economy principles can significantly address environmental concerns and contribute to the fight against climate change.

The 62 million tonnes of e-waste generated in 2022 would fill 1.55 million 40-tonne trucks, roughly enough trucks to form a bumper-to-bumper line encircling the equator, according to the report from ITU and UNITAR.

Meanwhile, less than one quarter (22.3%) of the year’s e-waste mass was documented as having been properly collected and recycled in 2022, leaving US$ 62 billion worth of recoverable natural resources unaccounted for and increasing pollution risks to communities worldwide.

Worldwide, the annual generation of e-waste is rising by 2.6 million tonnes annually, on track to reach 82 million tonnes by 2030, a further 33% increase from the 2022 figure.

E-waste, any discarded product with a plug or battery, is a health and environmental hazard, containing toxic additives or hazardous substances such as mercury, which can damage the human brain and coordination system.

The report foresees a drop in the documented collection and recycling rate from 22.3% in 2022 to 20% by 2030 due to the widening difference in recycling efforts relative to the staggering growth of e-waste generation worldwide.

Challenges contributing to the widening gap include technological progress, higher consumption, limited repair options, shorter product life cycles, society’s growing electronification, design shortcomings, and inadequate e-waste management infrastructure.

The report underlines that if countries could bring the e-waste collection and recycling rates to 60% by 2030, the benefits – including through minimizing human health risks – would exceed costs by more than US $38 billion.

As well, the world “remains stunningly dependent” on a few countries for rare earth elements, despite their unique properties crucial for future technologies, including renewable energy generation and e-mobility.

7 key findings from chaos at Waste Management Phoenix Open

When chaos broke out on the Friday and Saturday of this year's WM Phoenix Open, we wanted to find out what happened and how bad it got.

The 2024 WM Phoenix Open ended with  a record-high number of arrest s , was overly crowded, and became so disorganized that it infuriated professional golfers and longtime fans alike. Some questioned whether they would return next year.

So, The Arizona Republic filed a state public records act request for records documenting the Scottsdale Police Department's response. We got breakdown of the calls for service to which police were dispatched.

Here are some key findings:

  • The most serious incidents took place on Friday and Saturday, as well. There were 29 disturbances and 24 medical emergencies those days, including one where the injured person was not breathing. There were also three assaults, which were the only assault calls to the police during the entire tournament.
  • On both Friday and Saturday the peak hour for calls was between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Scottsdale police received 20 calls during that hour timeframe on both days, which equates to one call every three minutes.
  • Scottsdale received 224 calls for service on Friday and Saturday, combined. That's nearly 60% of the total 395 calls for service the department received during the Phoenix Open week.
  • The majority of calls for service to Scottsdale during tournament week had to do with suspicious individuals whom fans wanted police to check into. Some of the other biggest categories include those medical emergencies, disturbances and 28 welfare checks on individuals.
  • Of the 184 calls that have a location attached to them in the city data, 101 were about incidents occurring at the 16th hole, which is a major draw for fans because it's the only hole with a full stadium around it. The 16th hole had nearly seven times more calls for service than the next most problematic location on the course.
  • Things had already gotten out of hand on that Friday, with Scottdale police responding to 97 calls for service. That's more than double the daily call count for any other day earlier that week. Calls surged between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday, when Scottsdale received one call every four minutes on average.
  • Saturday's call surge began far earlier. The rate of calls surpassed one every ten minutes beginning at 8 a.m. Like on Friday, calls fell below that rate by 5 p.m. There were 127 calls for service on Saturday overall.

Waste Management rate increases take effect April 1

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - New Waste Management price hikes are set to take effect on April 1. The increase is based on the rise in the 2023 Consumer Price Index, which was 7.28%

In a letter to the City of Reno, the company says the rate increase will be 6%. That’s the maximum amount allowed under the contract the city negotiated with Waste Management.

Residential customers with at 96-gallon garbage bin and a 96-gallon recycling bin will see bills increase by $1.37 to $24.13 per month.

Disposal at the transfer stations and the Lockwood Landfill will increase by the full 7.28%.

The host fee Waste Management will pay to the City of Reno will increase from 56 cents per ton to 60 cents per ton for all material passing through transfer stations in Reno.

The new rates for solid waste per ton will be the following:

  • The rates for compacted yards will increase to $16.56
  • The rates for uncompacted yards will increase to $12.93
  • The rates for approved recyclables per ton will increase to $62.79

Waste Management says these are internal rates between hauling company and post collections, and does not affect the rate paid by the public at the transfer station.

The City’s Disposal allowances will also be increased. The new Collection Service Allowance will now be $1.2 million, the Transfer Station Allowance will now be $1.1 million, and the Lockwood Landfill Allowance will be $58,382.01.

When the landfill site is closed, discharge water filtration and clarification equipment is installed, the territory is covered with specific material and backfilled. Then many tubes used to purify gas are installed. The greatest danger in landfill restoration is the groundwater contamination. In and around Moscow there are a few dozens of waste deposits, some of which are growing higher than multistoried residential houses standing nearby.

During my work on the project, I visited 7 landfills in Moscow and the Moscow region. Some objects were guarded, and it was so absurd that the guards actually guarded a heap of rubbish.

While in these landfills, I saw that the liquid produced by the rotting waste flows out of the pipes sticking out on the slopes into the nearby rivers. Working on this project I wanted to show the rubbish not in the way everyone is used to see it. What is seen in front of our eyes is hilly landscapes, hiding million tons of consumer waste — a typical view of the contemporary system. We do not always see what is hidden.
