When we keep discipline in the right frame, our actions will not hurt others.

Discipline doesn’t mean that you succumb to the unethical demand of your peers or superiors. You can become a successful person if you can lead a disciplined life. Essay on Discipline – In School (Essay 3 – 250 Words )

Discipline in school means going to school on time, following all the rules and regulations of the school, completing all the given tasks within the deadlines, etc. Many people do not like to be told what to do and they most definitely do not like to be told what to read. This fact is one of the reasons the school systems have such trouble educating some students. The thing is life is not here to give us all the things we want and if we do not have enough luck to be born extremely rich or extremely gifted our best solution is to have discipline at school. But this can be a problem, mostly because the things they teach us in school tend to be suited for one type of student and it happens to be the rarest one.

Discipline at school is not something that you have to do the conventional way, the thing is you can trick the system if you know how to approach the problem. You know what tasks you have and you can calculate how much time it can take you to do it then you just split that time into manageable segments. After you do the calculations you can spread the segments through the day so you do not even notice them and you will find that you can do much more then if you sat every day for a couple of hours in a row. The solution is simple as that and when you implement it in your daily life you will have discipline in school in no time just be patient and stick with the plan even if it has a lot of room for spontaneity.

Essay on Discipline – Types, Principles and Challenges (Essay 9 – 1000 Words )

Introduction:

Discipline is probably one of the most mentioned word you heard while growing up. It never gets old because discipline is required in all stages of life. Being disciplined sounds like a very heavy thing but it is simply the act of obeying the rules set for you as a guide for behaviour. Guides for behaviour are mostly used in schools and organizations. At home, being disciplined is basically following the right thing and displaying acceptable behaviour according to morals. Consequences of indiscipline at school and at home were severe such that children opted to be in their best behaviour. Teachers have a hard task in shaping the behaviour of children and they had to be “bad cops” every time in order to ensure discipline of students. In professional lives, discipline and code of conduct for employees is controlled by leaders and managers. It is really hectic when it comes to discipline in adults because the forms of punishment as consequences of indiscipline are hard to apply on people you respect especially those who are older than you. As a manager, it is important that discipline is maintained.

Types of Discipline:

There are three types of discipline based on behaviour modification. These types of discipline are aimed at correcting misbehavior. Misbehavior is any behaviour that is inappropriate according to the guidelines for behaviour that are set for a specific area.

The first type of discipline is preventive discipline. This type of discipline focuses on preventing certain type of behaviour from being displayed by the subjects. It actually diverts them from misbehaving and cause improvements in that area. It has been used in most schools to prevent absurd behaviour among students due to the restrictions put in place by the guide for behaviour.

The other type is supportive discipline. This type of discipline is aimed at supporting the virtues in an individual like self-control and it helps them get back on track easily. It is supportive through provision of positive feedback to the subjects, showing interest in the activities of the subjects and helping the subjects whenever they have difficulties so as to encourage good behaviour.

The third type of discipline is corrective discipline. This discipline is involved with the problem and deals with it directly. This type of discipline is known to be uncomfortable and intimidating and so people try to avoid sing it. Despite the discomfort and intimidating effects, it is a very effective type because the subject will have to go through the consequences of their misbehavior. It has been used to cease disruptive behaviour among students and its effectiveness has been realized.

Principles of Discipline Management:

Discipline is not just performed by anyone in whichever way they like, it should follow the principles of discipline in order for it to be effective. Discipline should search for a balance between finding disciplinary action and its long term effects. As a parent or a teacher, it is upon you to discipline your child but how you do it matters because the child may end up having feelings of hate towards you, which leads to more inappropriate behaviour. The reason why teachers tend to quit their jobs within the first years of practice is the lack of finding a balance while controlling behaviour of a child.

Another principle is the use of affective approach in discipline. According to the theories by Freud Sigmoid and Carl Rodgers, behaviour, implications of how adults discipline children were felt differently and that is why an effective approach is preferred.

Behavioral approach to discipline is a principle that is vital in controlling behaviour. According to a behaviorist theory by Skinner, there is classical conditioning and operant conditioning, both aimed at controlling behaviour. Through positive and negative reinforcements, behaviour can be corrected and that makes the disciplining act successful.

Cognitive approach to discipline was developed due to the cognitive developmental theories. Controlling behaviour is highly dependent on the cognition because thought processes influence behaviour. Using the psychological approach to change someone’s thinking will result in change of behaviour. This approach works for all ages because cognitive development is for all stages of life.

Challenges Facing Discipline Management:

Management of discipline is affected by factors which challenge the process. One factor is the lack of effective communication. When the guide for behaviour has not clearly been communicated to the subjects, incidences of misbehavior may be noted. It would be inappropriate to discipline the subject because they had no idea it was a wrong thing to do. In order for discipline to be effective, clear communication of the required behaviour should be communicated.

Lack of respect to authority. As time goes by, we realize that respect diminishes especially in schools. In the olden times, teachers received utmost respect from the students, some were even feared. Nowadays, respect has deteriorated and most of the teachers are young. Discipline management in situations where leaders are not respected is sort of impossible.

Economic difficulties also contribute to ineffective discipline managements. Due to increase in population, management of discipline is hard because misbehavior incidences increase due to poverty and discipline management is compromised through these economic hardships. There are also less resources to use in discipline management.

Disruptive behavior of the leader causes ineffective discipline management. Disruptive behaviour of leaders is in the form of lack of interest in the activities of the subjects and the lack of commitment in improving the behaviour of their subjects. Leadership and management roles involve disciplining but that cannot be possible in situations where the leaders and managers lack interest in their subordinates. Leaders and managers should always take part in improving the behaviors and personalities of their subjects so that working with them become easier.

To conclude, discipline is actually the art of shaping behaviour. The management of discipline requires specific regulations through principles to enhance its effectiveness. The challenges facing discipline management are situational and can be avoided. As a leader or a manager, the role of discipline should be under your control at all times in order to gain respect from your subordinates.

Schools have been moving back and forth when introducing reforms on discipline. Moving from an extremely tough stance to an extremely lax one, schools continue to find the right balance on how to discipline students both generally and on a case-to-case basis. Essay on School Discipline

Discipline is used in schools to keep students, teachers and other staff safe and to help meet the behavioral, social and emotional needs of the children as they grow and develop. Schools approach discipline in various ways and the severity of the discipline usually coincides with how severe the offense was.

Goal of Discipline

The main goal of discipline in schools is to teach children appropriate ways of behaving by giving consequences for making poor choices. For example, a student who doesn’t pay attention in class may have to spend recess time making up material that was missed. Discipline helps a student refrain from the behavior in the future.

The other goal of school discipline is to create a learning environment that benefits all students. By putting an end to behaviors that are not conducive to learning, teachers and administrators are able to create classrooms that are ideal for the educational needs of the children in the school. Types of School Discipline

Punitive techniques of discipline are the most common and involve giving an unpleasant consequence in response to a negative behavior. An example of this is when a child must move his desk to the front of the room after getting caught throwing pencils at other students. The aim is that next time the student considers throwing a pencil, he will remember the embarrassment of having to move to the front of the room while the entire class knows he is in trouble.

Zero tolerance is something that is used for more severe behaviors. Typically students are given warning or two before being given a consequence. However, the technique of zero tolerance means that no warnings are given and consequences are immediate. This type of discipline is used in cases of violence toward other students, drugs and other dangerous behaviors.

Some schools also use positive reinforcement, which is a technique that involves offering positive consequences for behavior that teachers and other staff want to see. For example, perhaps a student is given a sticker for turning in homework on time or is allowed to check out an extra library book for showing proper care of books. The goal here is to make proper behavior attractive enough that students want to make the right choices.

Effects of the Right Discipline Choice

The type of discipline a school chooses to use has an impact on the overall atmosphere and safety of the learning environment. In general, experts suggest a mixture of the types to create well rounded students who avoid undesired behaviors and instead gravitate toward the undesired ones. Discipline also creates structure and expectations for students, something that plenty of research says is ideal for teaching kids, both academically and socially, effectively preparing them for life beyond school.

Research Findings

According to the American Institutes for Research, students who are effectively disciplined, both positively and negatively, have a higher academic performance and are less likely to become part of the juvenile justice system as they get older. In addition, experts have found that discipline that occurs at school, rather than suspending students, further improves their performance in the classroom and helps keep them out of the legal system.

What Parents Can Do

School discipline is only truly effective if parents are willing to back up the decisions made by the school and help their child learn the proper way to behave at school. Parents should make a point of understanding the discipline used at their child’s school so they know what to expect and teach their child what to expect. Parents should understand that the rules at school may be different than the ones at home, but that kids are expected to follow the rules when they are in the classroom. Parents who partner with the school are the most likely to create students who behave appropriately at school and who don’t need much discipline to be successful.

Leadership in Action

Discipline Begins at Home

[June 26, 2019] I was traveling out in the Western U.S. this past week. In one of the many legs of my trip, I sat beside a Texas High School principal on an American Airlines flight. We talked about college and the challenges of teaching and eventually, I asked her what message she would share with us. She said that the biggest problem in schools is the lack of discipline and that parents are responsible to fix the problem, not the schools.

“Discipline isn’t what you do to a Child – It’s what you do for a child…” – Unknown

Discipline begins at home. I see it in young soldiers who come into the U.S. Army and don’t know how to show respect or to even make their bed in the morning. The movie Private Benjamin (1980) starring Goldie Hawn plays on this very theme. It’s about a sheltered young high-society woman who joins the U.S. Army on a whim and finds herself in difficult situations.

While reading a book by retired Lieutenant General Hal Moore, I was surprised at his admission that, as a child, he struggled to keep his emotions in check. Like many young boys, Hal Moore liked to fish, hunt, camp, and generally have fun. But his overall lack of discipline caused him to fight fiercely to be a better person. In Hal Moore on Leadership , he shares an important lesson in life; that discipline begins at home. Without his parents, Hal Moore tells us he would have been a failure.

Hal Moore, the High School principle, and many others place the responsibility of discipline squarely at the feet of parents. Excuses are made that parents in a modern society are too busy or are just doing their ‘own thing’ and ‘shouldn’t be bothered.’ It’s always “someone else’s responsibility,” the modern argument goes. Parents who do not implant discipline in their children are guilty of the most fundamental error of parenting.

Discipline is, by definition, what drives us to succeed and get those things we want. Usually, it means working hard, being honest, and treating others properly. Without discipline, all the motivation in the world cannot help us. We must be focused and attentive to control ourselves and insure we do the right thing at the right time.

Parents give us our first introduction to discipline. Eventually, through nurturing and a firm kindness of our parents, we grow emotionally to understand that our pathway to success is only through disciplined behavior.  Self-discipline is learned from our parents and is the end-product of good parenting.

I enjoyed your article today. Thanks.

' src=

Most of us did. Thanks Mike. Haven’t heard from you in a while.

' src=

I enjoyed your article this morning and hope you continue with your blog. I shared today’s article with a friend of mine at work and he just laughed. He thought that discipline was only for soldiers. How little he knows amazes me but he is still my friend. I’m trying to convert him into thinking more for himself and not drink the liberal cool aide.

' src=

If you don’t learn to control yourself early in life, no one will be able to help you. It’s been said that parents should train their kids to be liked so others will work with them and play with them. That is so true. We call that “discipline.”

' src=

There is no substitute for learning the rules and following them. The fact that we even debate the issue is weird to me.

' src=

I think it was Professor Jordan Peterson who said the main job of parents is to make their kids likable.

' src=

Discipline is one of the keys to a good life. Keep up the great work, Gen. Satterfield.

' src=

Good article, interesting and entertaining.

' src=

I’ve been saying this for years. The parents are the key to having children who behave and respect others. When parenting becomes secondary to other things in life, then the degradation of the family began and we now have weak, mindless robots walking around trying to tell us what is moral. How quaint and how ignorant.

' src=

Hey Georgie, great comment. I see it at work when we get new, young folks into work for us. They think they should be the ‘boss’ and paid for it, yet they have zero social skills. And, they don’t desire to work to get anything before being paid for it. How sad that our current generation of young people is so ignorant of reality.

' src=

Gen. Satterfield has written about Google before on its predatory predilections. The leftist snowflakes are being undermined and they are completely oblivious to it.

' src=

It is interesting that in your DAILY FAVORITES section you have two articles about the latest Google scandal and an article today about discipline. It is clear that Google is an “authoritarian” inspired company that will use any fascist method and employ dirty tricks to undermine democracy.

' src=

That’s a good point, Gil. It’s kind of scary that a monopoly can do the kind of damage and try to get away with it.

' src=

… and they were, of course, trying to hide what they were doing. Let’s shine a bright light and watch the cockroaches run.

' src=

No discipline there.

' src=

Ha Ha. Just like the citizens of North Korea, our people are being hoodwinked by Google executives.

' src=

Good comparison. Or Cuba or some of the African nations. Ignorance is a common malady.

How to Practice Positive Discipline at Home

Positive discipline is a parenting technique focused on kindness, trust, and connection. Here’s why it may be the ideal way to teach children right from wrong.

Positive discipline is a parenting technique focused on kindness and trust. According to Ari Brown, M.D., pediatrician and author of Baby 411 and Toddler 411 , positive discipline means showing respect, listening, rewarding good behavior , and reminding your child that you love them while teaching them right from wrong. These affirmative actions make your child feel respected and loved, which in turn, should encourage positive behavior in the future.

So, if you regularly respond to bad behavior with yelling , lecturing, or revoking privileges, you may want to rethink your disciplinary method. "Kids don't learn when they're feeling threatened," says Jane Nelsen, Ed.D., author of the Positive Discipline series and a licensed marriage, family, and child counselor. Your child may comply with your demands because they’re afraid of what will happen if they don’t, rather than because they’ve grasped anything about right and wrong.

Are you looking to incorporate positive discipline into your own life? Read on to learn more about the disciplinary technique.

What Is Positive Discipline?

Advocates for positive discipline don’t believe in verbal and physical punishments for kids. These strategies often trigger fear, distrust, and low self-esteem .

Instead, Dr. Nelsen's positive discipline model instills social and life skills in a respectful, encouraging way. She lays out five key criteria for positive discipline :

  • Positive discipline is equally kind and firm.
  • It helps children develop a feeling of connection (belonging and significance).
  • The effects last long-term.
  • It builds good character in children by teaching social and life skills .
  • It shows children that they’re capable and can use their personal powers in constructive ways.

Advocates of positive parenting techniques don’t want to eliminate discipline altogether. Rather, they want to create a “loving hierarchy” that helps a child feel safe and protected, says Shauna Shapiro, Ph.D., professor, speaker, and co-author of Mindful Discipline: A Loving Approach to Setting Limits and Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child .

Positive discipline aims to lead children in the right direction, and it lets parents view discipline as an instructive tool that teaches right and wrong. “If you let your toddler call the shots , it will haunt you as your child gets older and the stakes are higher. This week, it’s demanding candy at the grocery store checkout line. Later it’s going to a party with underage drinking or drug use,” says Dr. Brown, adding that the key to effective discipline is having a plan, setting limits, and following through.

The Benefits of Positive Discipline

Positive discipline has many benefits, including:

  • It's effective.
  • It promotes self-esteem and confidence.
  • It helps kids feel motivated and encouraged.
  • It encourages connectedness.
  • It models kindness and emotional stability.

Other discipline strategies that rely on shame and punishment aren't effective. “When we shame ourselves or other people, the parts of the brain that have to do with learning new behaviors are shut down,” says Dr. Shapiro. “Shame and self-judgment rob the brain of the energy it needs for changing, so the behaviors we want kids to change get stuck.”

In other words, a child will be more likely to act out again if you shame them for their behavior. In the long run, this may lead to issues with self-esteem and confidence .

On the other hand, positive discipline, like methods used in authoritative parenting , helps children feel motivated, encouraged, connected, and empowered. And since you're modeling kindness and emotional stability, it tends to lead to the development of those same traits in kids.

Also, a 2017 study on the effects of parenting and substance use found that positive parenting increased academic achievement and reduced substance use in kids.

How to Master Positive Discipline

Incorporating the positive discipline method into your life can be easier said than done. But, with the right tools, anyone can do it. Some examples of positive discipline strategies include:

  • Redirecting
  • Positively reinforcing desirable behavior
  • Time out or time in
  • Brief reminders
  • Choosing to ignore some behaviors

Further, Dr. Brown has developed eight key points to mastering the technique.

Be a good role model

According to Dr. Shapiro, positive discipline always begins with the parent. “You need to make a change in your own life— start to integrate mindfulness and compassion ” she says. Your children will learn from this behavior, and with time, they’ll start acting with kindness in return.

Be consistent

Stick to your guidelines without backing down. Otherwise, children will think they can bend the rules whenever they’d like.

Be calm and brief

There’s no need to drag the discipline on with lectures; short and sweet comments work just as effectively.

Act quickly

Discipline your child as soon as possible, even if you’re in public. That way, the reason for correction is clear, suggests Dr. Brown.

Pick your battles

Not every bad behavior is worth the effort of disciplining; sometimes kids will simply act like kids. For example, you may correct your child for slapping their sibling , but ignore a snappy comment made right before naptime.

Be realistic

Do you really expect a 4-year-old to sit quietly during an hour-long trip to the grocery store? Dr. Brown says parents need to have reasonable expectations of their kids and have developmentally-appropriate expectations.

Catch your child behaving

“Your child craves your attention. Kids prefer positive attention like hugs or praise, but they’ll also accept negative attention like you screaming and yelling," says Dr. Brown. So, if you praise your child for cleaning up their toys, you’ll be more likely to see more of that behavior, and less likely to see them resort to misbehaving to get you to notice them.

Remind them that you love them

Remember that even though your child may behave badly, your child isn’t "bad." So, follow your correction with hugs and sweet words, then move on afterwards.

The Bottom Line

Positive discipline is a great method that encourages good behavior and centers kindness. While it is effective, it’s important to note that your child won’t immediately change their behaviors. “You are planting the seeds of discipline; don’t expect a tree to grow overnight,” says Dr. Brown.

This essay delves into the concept of discipline, its importance, forms, and impacts on individual and collective levels.

At its core, discipline is the ability to pursue what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it. It is about making choices that are aligned with our goals and values, even when they are difficult or uncomfortable. Discipline involves both self-control and the external imposition of rules, aimed at fostering order and efficiency.

Importance of Discipline in Personal Life

Discipline is crucial in personal development. It is the foundation upon which virtues like punctuality, reliability, and responsibility are built. Individuals who cultivate discipline are better equipped to face challenges, achieve their goals, and manage their time effectively. Discipline in personal life leads to improved mental health, as it reduces chaos and uncertainty by promoting a structured approach to daily activities.

Discipline in Education

A disciplined approach to education fosters a culture of learning and intellectual curiosity, essential for academic success and lifelong learning.

Discipline in Professional Life

Professional success is often a result of discipline. It encompasses punctuality, meeting deadlines, quality of work, and the ability to work collaboratively. Disciplined professionals are more likely to advance in their careers as they demonstrate reliability, competence, and respect for organizational norms.

Forms of Discipline

Discipline can manifest in various forms, including:

  • Self-Discipline: The ability to control one’s feelings and overcome one’s weaknesses; it is the most personal form of discipline.

The allure of instant gratification, the rise of individualism, and the proliferation of distractions in the digital age pose significant obstacles to maintaining discipline. Moreover, excessive discipline, especially when imposed without understanding or compassion, can lead to resistance and a loss of motivation.

Cultivating Discipline

Cultivating discipline requires a conscious effort. It involves setting clear goals, establishing routines, and practicing self-reflection. Encouragement from family, educators, and mentors plays a crucial role in developing discipline. Moreover, creating environments that minimize distractions and temptations is essential for fostering discipline.

Discipline and Freedom

Contrary to common belief, discipline does not stifle freedom; rather, it enhances it. By imposing order and structure, discipline frees individuals from chaos and indecision, allowing them to make informed choices and pursue their goals with focus and determination.

The Global Perspective on Discipline

Cultures around the world view and practice discipline differently, yet its value is universally recognized. Global challenges, such as climate change and pandemics, underscore the need for collective discipline. Adhering to global agreements and protocols requires a disciplined approach by nations and individuals alike.

In conclusion, Discipline is an invaluable trait that enriches personal life, contributes to academic and professional success, and facilitates societal progress. It is about making consistent, often challenging choices that align with our goals and values. While discipline demands effort and sometimes sacrifice, its rewards are immense, including improved productivity, fulfillment, and the ability to navigate life’s challenges with resilience. As we forge ahead, let us recognize and cultivate discipline, not just as a means to achieve our individual aspirations but as a vital component of a harmonious and progressive society. Alec Bohm Joins Exclusive Company in Philadelphia Phillies' Franchise History Books

Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm crushed two three-run home runs against the Chicago White Sox on Friday, notching six RBI in the process.

  • Author: Sam Connon

In this story:

The Philadelphia Phillies have had plenty of legendary sluggers in their 142 seasons of existence, only a select few of whom have notched six RBI in a single game.

Of the 15 players who have achieved the feat multiple times since 1900, only seven have done it three times or more, according to StatsCentre . Alec Bohm, 27, was already a member of that exclusive club prior to Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox .

Bohm went one step further when he lifted Philadelphia to a series-opening win, driving in six of the Phillies' seven runs in their 7-0 victory. In doing so, he joined Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt and former MVP Ryan Howard with four six-RBI games in a Philadelphia uniform.

Schmidt owns the franchise record with five such performances.

Most career 6+ RBI performances by a player with the @Phillies franchise - MLB modern era (1900-present): 5- Mike Schmidt 4- Alec Bohm (Doing so in today's 7-0 win over the White Sox) 4- Ryan Howard 3- Gavvy Cravath 3- Cy Williams 3- Chuck Klein 3- Del Ennis 2- Eight others tied pic.twitter.com/0Sns1fSvk3 — StatsCentre (@StatsCentre) April 20, 2024

Brohm was able to break into the top tier of that list with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate Friday, starting with his three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. When he stepped up to the plate again in the bottom of the third, Bohm crushed another three-run shot to center.

Even though he went 0-for-2 the rest of the way, flying out and grounding into a double play, the damage had been done. The Phillies had already built out a massive lead, thanks almost solely to Bohm, who had already made history.

Bohm is batting .258 with an .834 OPS so far in 2024, appearing in all 20 of Philadelphia's games thus far. Since breaking into the big leagues in 2020, Bohm has finished each season with more home runs and more RBI than the year before, and his OPS has been on a steady incline since 2021.

Through five years as the Phillies' everyday third baseman, Bohm is a .275 hitter with 47 home runs, 256 RBI and a .735 OPS.

Bohm and the Phillies will resume their series with the White Sox on Saturday, with game two scheduled to get underway at 6:05 p.m. ET.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Poets’ Arrives With a Promotional Blitz (and a Second LP)

The pop superstar’s latest album was preceded by a satellite radio channel, a word game, a return to TikTok and an actual library. For her fans, more is always welcome.

By Ben Sisario

Taylor Swift was already the most ubiquitous pop star in the galaxy, her presence dominating the music charts, the concert calendar, the Super Bowl, the Grammys.

Then it came time for her to promote a new album.

In the days leading up to the release of “The Tortured Poets Department” on Friday, Swift became all but inescapable, online and seemingly everywhere else. Her lyrics were the basis for an Apple Music word game . A Spotify-sponsored, Swift-branded “ library installation ,” in muted pink and gray, popped up in a shopping complex in Los Angeles. In Chicago, a QR code painted on a brick wall directed fans to another Easter egg on YouTube. Videos on Swift’s social media accounts, showing antique typewriters and globes with pins, were dissected for clues about her music. SiriusXM added a Swift radio station; of course it’s called Channel 13 (Taylor’s Version).

About the only thing Swift didn’t do was an interview with a journalist.

At this stage in Swift’s career, an album release is more than just a moment to sell music; it’s all but a given that “The Tortured Poets Department” will open with gigantic sales numbers, many of them for “ghost white,” “phantom clear” and other collector-ready vinyl variants . More than that, the album’s arrival is a test of the celebrity-industrial complex overall, with tech platforms and media outlets racing to capture whatever piece of the fan frenzy they can get.

Threads, the newish social media platform from Meta, primed Swifties for their idol’s arrival there, and offered fans who shared Swift’s first Threads post a custom badge. Swift stunned the music industry last week by breaking ranks with her record label, Universal, and returning her music to TikTok, which Universal and other industry groups have said pays far too little in royalties. Overnight, TikTok unveiled “The Ultimate Taylor Swift In-App Experience,” offering fans digital goodies like a “Tortured Poets-inspired animation” on their feed.

Before the album’s release on Friday, Swift revealed that a music video — for “Fortnight,” the first single, featuring Post Malone — would arrive on Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern time. At 2 a.m., she had another surprise: 15 more songs. “I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you,” she wrote in a social media post , bringing “The Anthology” edition of the album to 31 tracks.

“The Tortured Poets Department,” which Swift, 34, announced in a Grammy acceptance speech in February — she had the Instagram post ready to go — lands as Swift’s profile continues to rise to ever-higher levels of cultural saturation.

Her Eras Tour , begun last year, has been a global phenomenon, crashing Ticketmaster and lifting local economies ; by some estimates, it might bring in as much as $2 billion in ticket sales — by far a new record — before it ends later this year. Swift’s romance with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been breathlessly tracked from its first flirtations last summer to their smooch on the Super Bowl field in February. The mere thought that Swift might endorse a presidential candidate this year sent conspiracy-minded politicos reeling .

“The Tortured Poets Department” — don’t even ask about the missing apostrophe — arrived accompanied by a poem written by Stevie Nicks that begins, “He was in love with her/Or at least she thought so.” That establishes what many fans correctly anticipated as the album’s theme of heartbreak and relationship rot, Swift’s signature topic. “I love you/It’s ruining my life,” she sings on “Fortnight.”

Fans were especially primed for the fifth track, “So Long, London,” given that (1) Swift has said she often sequences her most vulnerable and emotionally intense songs fifth on an LP, and (2) the title suggested it may be about Joe Alwyn, the English actor who was Swift’s boyfriend for about six years, reportedly until early 2023 . Indeed, “So Long” is an epic breakup tune, with lines like “You left me at the house by the heath” and “I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free.” Tracks from the album leaked on Wednesday, and fans have also interpreted some songs as being about Matty Healy , the frontman of the band the 1975, whom Swift was briefly linked to last year.

The album’s title song starts with a classic Swift detail of a memento from a lost love: “You left your typewriter at my apartment/Straight from the tortured poets department.” It also name-drops Dylan Thomas, Patti Smith and, somewhat surprisingly given that company, Charlie Puth, the singer-songwriter who crooned the hook on Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” a No. 1 hit in 2015. (Swift has praised Wiz Khalifa and that song in the past.)

Other big moments include “Florida!!!,” featuring Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, in which Swift declares — after seven big percussive bangs — that the state “is one hell of a drug.” Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, the producers and songwriters who have been Swift’s primary collaborators in recent years, both worked on “Tortured Poets,” bringing their signature mix of moody, pulsating electronic tracks and delicate acoustic moments, like a bare piano on “Loml” (as in “love of my life”).

As the ninth LP Swift has released in five years, “Tortured Poets” is the latest entry in a remarkable creative streak. That includes five new studio albums and four rerecordings of her old music — each of which sailed to No. 1. When Swift played SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles in August, she spoke from the stage about her recording spurt, saying that the forced break from touring during the Covid-19 pandemic had spurred her to connect with fans by releasing more music.

“And so I decided, in order to keep that connection going,” she said , “if I couldn’t play live shows with you, I was going to make and release as many albums as humanly possible.”

That was two albums ago.

Ben Sisario covers the music industry. He has been writing for The Times since 1998. More about Ben Sisario

Uri Berliner resigned from NPR on Wednesday saying he could not work under the new CEO Katherine Maher. He cautioned that he did not support calls to defund NPR.

NPR senior business editor Uri Berliner resigned this morning, citing the response of the network's chief executive to his outside essay accusing NPR of losing the public's trust.

"I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years," Berliner wrote in an email to CEO Katherine Maher. "I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay."

NPR and Maher declined to comment on his resignation.

The Free Press, an online site embraced by journalists who believe that the mainstream media has become too liberal, published Berliner's piece last Tuesday. In it, he argued that NPR's coverage has increasingly reflected a rigid progressive ideology. And he argued that the network's quest for greater diversity in its workforce — a priority under prior chief executive John Lansing – has not been accompanied by a diversity of viewpoints presented in NPR shows, podcasts or online coverage.

Later that same day, NPR pushed back against Berliner's critique.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff . "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

Yet Berliner's commentary has been embraced by conservative and partisan Republican critics of the network, including former President Donald Trump and the activist Christopher Rufo.

Rufo is posting a parade of old social media posts from Maher, who took over NPR last month. In two examples, she called Trump a racist and also seemed to minimize the effects of rioting in 2020. Rufo is using those to rally public pressure for Maher's ouster, as he did for former Harvard University President Claudine Gay .

Others have used the moment to call for the elimination of federal funding for NPR – less than one percent of its roughly $300 million annual budget – and local public radio stations, which derive more of their funding from the government.

Berliner reiterated in his resignation letter that he does not support such calls.

In a brief interview, he condemned a statement Maher issued Friday in which she suggested that he had questioned "whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity." She called that "profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning."

Berliner subsequently exchanged emails with Maher, but she did not address those comments.

"It's been building up," Berliner said of his decision to resign, "and it became clear it was on today."

For publishing his essay in The Free Press and appearing on its podcast, NPR had suspended Berliner for five days without pay. Its formal rebuke noted he had done work outside NPR without its permission, as is required, and shared proprietary information.

(Disclosure: Like Berliner, I am part of NPR's Business Desk. He has edited many of my past stories. But he did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Earlier in the day, Berliner forwarded to NPR editors and other colleagues a note saying he had "never questioned" their integrity and had been trying to raise these issues within the newsroom for more than seven years.

What followed was an email he had sent to newsroom leaders after Trump's 2016 win. He wrote then: "Primarily for the sake of our journalism, we can't align ourselves with a tribe. So we don't exist in a cocoon that blinds us to the views and experience of tens of millions of our fellow citizens."

Berliner's critique has inspired anger and dismay within the network. Some colleagues said they could no longer trust him after he chose to publicize such concerns rather than pursue them as part of ongoing newsroom debates, as is customary. Many signed a letter to Maher and Edith Chapin, NPR's chief news executive. They asked for clarity on, among other things, how Berliner's essay and the resulting public controversy would affect news coverage.

Yet some colleagues privately said Berliner's critique carried some truth. Chapin also announced monthly reviews of the network's coverage for fairness and diversity - including diversity of viewpoint.
