The computer runs on a three-step cycle namely input, process, and output. Also, the computer follows this cycle in every process it was asked to do. In simple words, the process can be explained in this way. The data which we feed into the computer is input, the work CPU do is process and the result which the computer give is output.

A computer system is a basic and functional computer that includes all the hardware and software that are required to make it functional for the user. It is an electronic device that accepts the data as input, processes the data in a pre-determined way and then communicates the result as output on the screen. CPU which stands for Central Processing Unit is the brain of the computer. It is an electronic circuit within a computer that executes instructions that make up a computer program. Various blocks of CPU are-

  • It carries out the operations of arithmetic and logical expressions.
  • The timing and Control Unit controls the entire operation being performed on the computer system.

Versatility refers to a capacity of computer. Computer perform different types of tasks with the same accuracy and efficiency. Now, we can quickly access stored data and solve complex problems in just seconds. Some of the characteristics of Computers are listed below-

  • Saves Time: A computer saves time by completing tasks quicker and more efficiently. For example, it can solve big complex problems within seconds which can save many minutes of ours.
  • Internet: Computers connect us to the internet which can help us to know important information from around the world, it can connect us with people from around the world through social networking sites, etc.

Computers come in various types, primarily categorized by their data handling capacity and physical size. Based on the size, computers are 5 types namely, Micro Computer, Mini Computer, Mainframe Computer, Super Computer and Work stations. Whereas, based on data handling capacity, there are 3 types of computers namely analogue computers, digital computers, and hybrid computers. All the different types of computers perform different tasks and have been designed differently. There are various types of computers available in the markets which are of different sizes. These computers are different from each other with respect to the amount of work they can do or the amount of data they can hold. Here we have classified the main 5 types of computers based on their size and have also provided the details regarding the same.

1. Micro Computer:

Micro Computers are mainly single-user computers and have comparatively lesser storage and speed than other computers. The first microcomputer was built with 8-bit microprocessor chips as these computers use microprocessors as CPU. Laptops, smartphones, desktop computers, etc. are all examples of microcomputers. These computers are made for everyday tasks like browsing the web and using programs like Microsoft Office MS Word etc..

2. Mini Computer:

Midrange computers or Mini-computers are multi-user computers designed in a way so as to entertain multiple users simultaneously. Small businesses and firms use these computers for their specific purposes. For example- a company or organization may use mini computers to look after the employee directory which may handle the payment history of its employees and any schools may use them to keep records of the students or for admission purposes.

3. Mainframe Computer:

Mainframe Computers are also not designed for single users, rather it is a multi-user computer that can handle thousands of users all at once. Large industries and government organizations utilize these computers to facilitate their business operations by storing substantial volumes of data. Banks and insurance companies use these computers to store the data of their customers, their policies, etc.

4. Super Computer:

Super Computer is the fastest type of computer amongst all and is also the most expensive. They can store a large number of data and can perform the most complex tasks within seconds. They can also execute millions of instructions per second. These computers are designed specifically to handle specific tasks such as weather forecasting, space research, and more. Supercomputers are also used by NASA for their Satellite launching.

5. Work Stations:

Workstations are single-user computers and have more powerful microprocessors than a microcomputer. When it comes to speed and storage capacity, it comes between a personal computer and a mini-computer. The most common uses of a workstation are desktop publishing, engineering designs, etc.

Based on Data Handling Capacity

Computers can be divided into 3 types based on their data handling capacity namely, analog, digital, and hybrid computers. These are different from each other with respect to the type of work they can do and the amount of data they can handle. We have discussed these types of computers in detail below.

Analog Computer:

The main function of Analog Computers is to process analog data. The data that changes frequently and does not have discrete values are called data and the analog computers are used at places where we have approximate values e.g., speed, temperature, pressure, etc. These computers can pick data from the devices without converting it into machine language. Some common examples of analog computers are speedometers, thermometers, etc.

Digital Computer:

Digital Computers are designed in a way so that they can perform calculations and logical operations at high speed. These computers input raw data and with the help of the programs stored in their memory, it gives the final output. Digital computers can only understand binary language i.e., 0 and 1 hence, the raw data to be given as input is converted into 0 and 1 and then it is processed. Examples are laptops, desktops, smartphones, etc.

Hybrid Computer:

Hybrid, as the name suggests is a mixture of both analog and digital computers. Hybrid computers are as fast as analog computers and also have accuracy like that of digital computers. These computers can process both continuous and discrete data as they accept analog signals and then convert them into digital signals before processing. Some common uses of Hybrid computers are in airplanes, hospitals, etc.

Components of a Computer

A computer mainly has two components i.e. hardware and software wherein the components of the computers having a physical structure such as wires, transistors, circuits, and hard disk make up the hardware whereas the programs and data make up the software. Some other important components of a Computer are discussed below.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

Often referred to as the “brain” of the computer, the CPU is responsible for executing instructions and performing calculations. It interprets and carries out the commands from software and hardware components.

Computer Memory

Computers have different types of memory for temporary and permanent data storage. Random Access Memory (RAM) provides fast but volatile storage, while the hard drive or Solid-State Drive (SSD) offers non-volatile, long-term storage for programs and files.

Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)

An arithmetic logic unit (ALU) is a key component of a computer’s central processor unit. The ALU is part of a central processing unit (CPU) and performs all arithmetic and logic operations that must be performed on instruction words. The ALU is split into two parts in some microprocessor architectures: the AU and the LU.

Input Devices of Computer

Examples include keyboards, mice, touchscreens, scanners, and microphones. They allow us to input commands, data, and instructions for the computer to process. Keyboards and mouse allow users to input text, navigate interfaces, and interact with software. Tochpads offer similar functions on laptops and touch-enabled devices. Microphones capture audio input, enabling voice commands, voice recordings, and communication in applications like voice chat and video conferencing.

Output Devices of Computer

Output Devices of Computers display or transmit processed information to users. These are tools that display or produce information from the computer. Common examples include monitors, printers, speakers, and headphones. They present the results of computations, provide visual feedback, or produce audio output. Monitors show visual data like tests and images, while printers create physical copies of documents. Speakers and headphones produce sound output, allowing us to hear audio from videos, music, or other multimedia on our computer.

What’s important is to not just boast and say “ I have a strong grasp on cybersecurity ”, but instead use your knowledge to show your readers your passion: “ After being bombarded with cyber attack after cyber attack, I explained to my grandparents the concept of end-to-end encryption and how phishing was not the same as a peaceful afternoon on a lake. ”

Make it Fun!

Students make the mistake of thinking their college essays have to be serious and hyper-professional. While you don’t want to be throwing around slang and want to present yourself in a positive light, you shouldn’t feel like you’re not allowed to have fun with your essay. Let your personality shine and crack a few jokes.

I held my breath and hit RUN. Yes! A plump white cat jumped out and began to catch the falling pizzas. Although my Fat Cat project seems simple now, it was the beginning of an enthusiastic passion for computer science. Four years and thousands of hours of programming later, that passion has grown into an intense desire to explore how computer science can serve society. Every day, surrounded by technology that can recognize my face and recommend scarily-specific ads, I’m reminded of Uncle Ben’s advice to a young Spiderman: “with great power comes great responsibility”. Likewise, the need to ensure digital equality has skyrocketed with AI’s far-reaching presence in society; and I believe that digital fairness starts with equality in education.

The unique use of threads at the College of Computing perfectly matches my interests in AI and its potential use in education; the path of combined threads on Intelligence and People gives me the rare opportunity to delve deep into both areas. I’m particularly intrigued by the rich sets of both knowledge-based and data-driven intelligence courses, as I believe AI should not only show correlation of events, but also provide insight for why they occur.

In my four years as an enthusiastic online English tutor, I’ve worked hard to help students overcome both financial and technological obstacles in hopes of bringing quality education to people from diverse backgrounds. For this reason, I’m extremely excited by the many courses in the People thread that focus on education and human-centered technology. I’d love to explore how to integrate AI technology into the teaching process to make education more available, affordable, and effective for people everywhere. And with the innumerable opportunities that Georgia Tech has to offer, I know that I will be able to go further here than anywhere else.

What the Essay Did Well 

This essay perfectly accomplishes the two key parts of a “ Why Computer Science? ” essay: answering “ Why This Major? ” and “ Why This College? ”. Not to mention, we get a lot of insight into this student and what they care about beyond computer science, and a fun hook at the beginning.

Starting with the “ Why This Major? ” aspect of the response, this essay demonstrates what got the student into computer science, why they are passionate about the subject, and what their goals are. They show us their introduction to the world of CS with an engaging hook: “I held my breath and hit RUN. Yes! A plump white cat jumped out and began to catch the falling pizzas. ” We then see this is a core passion because they spent “ Four years and thousands of hours ,” coding.

The student shows us why they care about AI with the sentence, “ Every day, surrounded by technology that can recognize my face and recommend scarily-specific ads ,” which makes the topic personal by demonstrating their fear at AI’s capabilities. But, rather than let panic overwhelm them, the student calls upon Spiderman and tells us their goal of establishing digital equality through education. This provides a great basis for the rest of the essay, as it thoroughly explains the students motivations and goals, and demonstrates their appreciation for interdisciplinary topics.

Then, the essay shifts into answering “ Why This College? ”, which it does very well by honing in on a unique facet of Georgia Tech’s College of Computing: threads. This is a great example of how to provide depth to the school resources you mention. The student describes the two threads and not only why the combination is important to them, but how their previous experiences (i.e. online English tutor) correlate to the values of the thread: “ For this reason, I’m extremely excited by the many courses in the People thread that focus on education and human-centered technology. ”

What Could Be Improved

This essay does a good job covering the basics of the prompt, but it could be elevated with more nuance and detail. The biggest thing missing from this essay is a strong core to tie everything together. What do we mean by that? We want to see a common theme, anecdote, or motivation that is weaved throughout the entire essay to connect everything. Take the Spiderman quote for example. If this was expanded, it could have been the perfect core for this essay.

Underlying this student’s interest in AI is a passion for social justice, so they could have used the quote about power and responsibility to talk about existing injustices with AI and how once they have the power to create AI they will act responsibly and help affected communities. They are clearly passionate about equality of education, but there is a disconnect between education and AI that comes from a lack of detail. To strengthen the core of the essay, this student needs to include real-world examples of how AI is fostering inequities in education. This takes their essay from theoretical to practical.

This speed helps in completing time-bound tasks and delivering the output without any delay. This speed is one of the main characteristics of computer and has helped humans to a great extent.

With speed comes the responsibility for accurate results. The computer is capable of giving almost 100% accurate results. Be it any complex calculation, a computer delivers it with zero errors. If any error is found, it’s mostly due to inaccurate or insufficient data provided by the user. A computer can work consistently alongside maintaining speed and no compromise in accuracy.

This includes zero human intervention. Moreover, a computer performs tasks on a fixed schedule. It helps to set daily reminders, scan for viruses timely, perform types of software updates on its own, or perform system diagnostics. All of this can be done without a user reminding the computer daily. A computer is helpful in large factories to pack and ship products. This all can be done with the help of a computer once it is fed with specific instructions.

Memory

A computer has a built-in memory. One is primary memory or the volatile memory called the RAM (Random access memory). Till the computer is connected to the power source. The data stored in RAM gets deleted once the power source is removed. The other memory is secondary memory or permanent memory. Secondary memory stores all the data and it remains safe even after the power source removal. So, this characteristic of the computer of having its memory is highly useful.

However, even with all these characteristics of the computer, it must always be kept in mind that a computer is just a machine. We should use it in limitations. Excess of everything is bad. There are equal harms and advantages. To sum up, I would say technology is a boon if used wisely.

Characteristics of Computers and their impacts

A computer is defined as an electronic device that allows the input, process, output, and store of information for later use. It is an electronic device because it will require electric power for it to operate and it is made up of electronic components. There are different classifications of computers depending on factors such as size, functionality, or purpose .

Computers are characterized by high processing speed, high storage capacity, automation, diligence, reliability, versatility, and accuracy among many others. Every technology when introduced for use it comes to change how humans carry out their daily operations and the computer is no exception. Computers have made communication simple and fast, reduced cost, created new job opportunities, and reduced paperwork among many positive impacts.  On the flip side, computers have come with challenges such as data security, privacy issues, and computer crimes among other negative influences.

How computers work

Data is entered through input devices (e.g. mouse, keyboard, joystick, etc.). The processing of the data is then done by the Central Processing Unit (CPU) , which compose of parts such as the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), Control Unit (CU), and the main memory (RAM) .

The data is then stored temporally as it is being processed in the main memory or permanently in the secondary storage e.g. hard disk drive, which can be retrieved later. 

The output of the processed data is through different avenues depending on the user’s need. If users need a softcopy they can use a monitor while for hardcopy, printers can be used. These and many other output devices can be used to display the information.

Characteristics Of Computers

Computers process data faster when compared with humans. Depending on the computer the processing speed can range from a few thousand processes to quadrillions processes per second. Technology has improved so much that a smartphone is faster than the types of personal computers of the 1990s. High speed helps process more work within a short time.

High storage capacity

Modern computers have a large storage space which can range from Megabytes to Terabytes. The storage can be the main memory which is volatile or the secondary which stores data permanently. The cost of storage has also gone down compared to earlier computers. The access speed of data from these devices has also increased. This means we can store more data in a small space and retrieve it faster than before. 

Automation means a computer can continue with an operation without human involvement after receiving instruction. Computers are automatic devices that can carry out many operations once they are instructed on what to do.

Unlike people, computers don`t get bored or fatigued if they are made to repeat one process many times. This means they can be used to do repetitive jobs with the same consistent results which are boring to humans.

Computers can repeatedly generate accurate results depending on the data they get. They have a high accuracy level and for any error mostly they are generated by user data entry or instruction. Garbage In Garbage Out (GIGO) applies in computers which means it will generate results depending on the data given. Correct data and instruction give the right results and vice versa.

Versatility

Computers can be used for many different operations and functions as users may think. A digital computer can be used to surf the internet, play games, watch movies, send an email, and design a building among many other purposes that users may desire. These versatile characteristics make computers addictive to use since you can accomplish most operations from one device.

Reliability

Computers if given the same data and instructions can be relied upon to give the same result all the time. Unlike us humans who can change the presentation, the computer will present it the same even if it is a million times which makes it more dependable.

Multitasking 

A modern digital computer can work on many jobs at the same time. Users can be reading a document while listening to music and open other applications which are handled by the computer at the same time.

Computers have no brains

Computers cannot think for themselves. They require instructions coded by humans so that they can interpret them and act accordingly. This means computers cannot think rationally but only on the line that the instructor desires. With artificial intelligence improving computers may improve on making decisions without human interventions.

No feelings and emotions

Unlike humans, computers don’t have feelings or experience any emotional meltdown. You can do many things to or with it but it cannot feel any of them.

Impacts of Computers on the society

Since when computers were invented they have made human life change in many ways and all aspects of life. Many advanced technologies that we see today are thanks to computers and related technologies such as the Internet.

Positive impacts of computer

Easy and cheap communication.

With computers and the internet, communication is made easier and more convenient. Using emails , chat rooms, social media platforms, and other means one can be able to communicate with almost anybody in the world regardless of their location. Sometimes the communication is real-time and visual if we use applications such as WhatsApp which makes it even more interesting. This has opened a new avenue for socializing to a worldwide level.

Computer storage

Computer use has eliminated the use of the filling room to store files for clients. This is because using a computer and application software like a database management system they can manage their customer file from one computer. This saves on space and cost.

Create employment opportunities

Computers require an expert to operate, which means learning new skills or getting one who has the required skills. This means computers have created new professions and careers. Today most companies have an ICT department that requires professional who has technical skills in computer. In addition to innovations like social media today we have new careers such as social media managers, virtual secretaries, SEO experts, and website developers among many others.

Reduced operation cost

Since computers ease communication it means also they reduce the cost of using posters, booking hotels for meetings (instead you can have a video conference meeting ), and hiring an extra room for filling among other cost-reducing. This tremendously cuts down the cost of operating a business. Also, automation of most business operations means fewer employees. With cloud computing technology companies are further reducing the cost of buying hardware and even ICT technologies management by outsourcing.

Easy distribution of knowledge

Computers have helped to distribute information from one corner of the world to another fast, simple, and convenient way. If today you what to learn a new skill you only need to connect to the internet and you can find all information that you need. Today’s learning method is where the teacher guides the student on where to find good information and how to filter the correct and most relevant.

Reduced paperwork

Before computers have a large storage capacity most information was on paper. With computers, information is now stored in soft copy which reduces paper usage. Just imagine if you were to print all the pictures that are on your smartphone, what will be the size of your picture album? But today you don’t need to print them since you can access them and share them with friends and family members at any time thanks to technology.

Negative impacts of computers

Relatively high initial and operational cost.

Computers are relatively expensive and not everybody can buy one. Businesses that incorporate computers in their operation will realize that they require to buy, other accessories other than the computer, and the installation may cost. The computers require repair and maintenance for optimum operation which is expensive.

Data security

Data stored on the computer can get lost or even stolen. Most people have their bank details, and personal, and job data on their smartphones which can be stolen. This means the security of all that data is compromised. With the internet and social media, it is even worse since data can be accessed remotely by unauthorized hackers and data threats.

Technology gap

The technology gap is the difference between those who can afford and know how to use technology and those who cannot afford it and hence don’t use it. In the same society, we have people who have many computer types and they can use them. On the flip side, some members of the community are poor and mostly old don’t use and cannot afford them. This divides society into 2, those who use technology and those who don’t.

Computer crime

A computer can be used to commit crimes such as cyber-attacks, hacking, and tampering with data among other computer crimes. Crime can be committed to or with a computer. Cyberbullying becoming a concern, where a person is bullied online by virtual individuals to the point of committing suicide

The rapid change in technology

Computers and related technologies are changing fast which means gadgets are becoming absolute as they enter the market. Someone born in the 1990s has moved from not having a phone to having a smartphone that can fit in their pocket.

The main characteristics of a computer are

1. Computer is fast ( Speed )

The computer can process data very fast, at the rate of millions of instructions per second. Some calculations that would have taken hours and days to complete otherwise, can be completed in a few seconds using the computer. For example, calculation and generation of salary slips of thousands of employees of an organization, weather forecasting that requires analysis of a large amount of data related to temperature, pressure and humidity of various places, etc.

Accuracy Computer provides a high degree of accuracy. For example, the computer can accurately give the result of division of any two numbers up to 10 decimal places.

3. Diligence

When used for a longer period of time, the computer does not get tired or fatigued. It can perform long and complex calculations with the same speed and accuracy from the start till the end.

4. Storing Data ( Storage Capability )

Large volumes of data and information can be stored in the computer and also retrieved whenever required. A limited amount of data can be stored, temporarily, in the primary memory. Secondary storage devices like floppy disk and compact disk can store a large amount of data permanently.

5. Computer are Versatile( Versatility )

Computer is versatile in nature. It can perform different types of tasks with the same ease. At one moment you can use the computer to prepare a letter document and in the next moment you may play music or print a document.

6. They can communicate

Computers have the ability to communicate, but of course there needs some sort of connection (either Wired or Wireless connection). Two computers can be connected to send & receive data. Special software’s are used for text and video chat. Friends & family can connect over the internet and share files, photos & videos online.

7. We can do multitasking

Multitasking is also a computer characteristic. Computers can perform several tasks at a time. For example you can listen to songs, download movies, and prepare word documents all at the same time.

Computing networks have been defined through communication protocols which are made up of data formats and rules for exchanging or sharing of information. Some of the commonly used communication protocols include the internet protocol suite and the Ethernet. The Ethernet protocol is a ubiquitous standard that is mostly used in local area networking while the Internet Protocol suite is sued for host to host transfer of data and for communication between two or more multiple computer networks. Computing networks, on the other hand, have been known to share information either through wired or wireless technology.

Day in day out in each part of the globe, computing networks have been more and more been integrated in all aspects of our lives through various technological innovations meant to improve the lives of human kind. Sharing of information between business enterprises belonging to the same owner is possible through either local area networking (LAN) for the case of business enterprises located in the same locality while Wide Area Networking will be suitable for businesses which are located over  wide geographical locations.

Computing networks are therefore suitable for business organizations like banks which are geographically located either in local or international geographical locations because they share be able to access and retrieve any information concerning their clients with ease and accuracy regardless of the geographical location. Unlike before when individuals had to line up in order to get their money in banks, the use of Automated Teller Machines (ATMS) nowadays has made it possible for people to quickly access their money anywhere in their country and even in the whole world, thanks to computing technology.

Computing networking has also revolutionaries the communication methods because unlike before when pigeons were used in sending messengers, the use of computing networking has made it possible for people to communicate effectively and instantly through the use of email and instant messaging services. Every aspect of our daily lives has been integrated with computing networks.      

How to keep Computing networks free from hacking

Despite the fact that computing networks are meant to serve human beings through enhanced technological innovations, this technology can be detrimental if proper network security settings are not put in place to safeguard the common users. It is therefore important that these networks are kept free from any potential harm which may arise from hacking. Hacking has been known to be a major threat towards the safe existence of computing networks. Hacking, this refers to an act of gaining entry with no legal authorization to a computer system or network with an aim of gaining full control of the computer network or system. The Network Administrator, who is responsible for managing the computing networks, should therefore control the security of the network through authorization of access to data in a network. Users in a computing network should thus be assigned or choose unique passwords or identities which can enable them to access basic programs and information within the network that is only within their authority.   

The hackers’ main intention is to gain control of an organization or an individual’s network with a view of gaining information regarding the systems. They normally do so with a view of even distorting the normal operation of the computer systems and network in general.

 In order to make safe these computing networks and ensure there is safe or secure transmission of data end to end, then the network administrator in an organization should administer policies and provisions which are aimed at monitoring and preventing unauthorized access, system modification, denial of network and computer accessible resources and general misuse. Authentication of users through their user names and passwords is one of the major measures taken to ensure that the network is secured from unauthorized access. 

A firewall should then be put in place to ensure that policies regarding the kind of services to be accessed by users on the network are enforced. Unfortunately the use of firewalls may fail to detect potentially harmful threats like for instance Trojans or viruses which may maliciously become transported over the network. A strong anti-virus software should therefore be installed on the computing network and an intrusion prevention system placed in place to aid in the detection and inhibition of such dangerous threats. Encryption of data should also be utilized to ensure that those gaining unauthorized access to an organization’s information are unable to understand it because of the anonymous codes used.         

Given the fact that Computing networks are here to stay, effective strategies should be developed to ensure that the use of this technology is not only effective and accurate but it is confidentially safe to use. The safety of computer networks should therefore be a first place priority for all organizations which must endeavor in devising daily safety mechanisms to counter ay threats that may comprise the safety of these networks. The safety of computer networks should therefore not be left to computer administrators alone but it should be a collective responsibility for all the network users who should raise an alarm whenever they sense any abnormal incident in the normal operation mode of the system. These measures will ensure that the information which is sent from end to end, thus one computer to another is safe and protected from external and unauthorized users.
