The best presentation apps for android.

best presentation apps for android

Desktop computers have become a rare commodity these day and although laptops are holding on to the last shred of anything that doesn’t resemble a smart device, it might not be long before they might be replaced for good. Even modern laptops have begun to resemble smart devices, as hybrid models aim to replace the conventional laptop.

Whether you are a PC user or someone who favours Mac, the chances are you need to be ready for a world ruled by Android. In fact, many PC and Mac users already own an Android device.

To help presenters prepare for things to come, we have compiled a list of the best presentation apps for Android. This list consists of not only apps that can be used for making and presenting your slide decks but also apps which can help you turn your Android device into a presentation remote or a tool for remotely delivering your presentations.

[This article contains affiliate links. For more information, see our disclosures here .]

1) PowerPoint for Android

According to some estimates there are 30 million PowerPoint presentations delivered per day. It can be safely assumed that most presenters globally use PowerPoint for delivering their slides. Even many who use alternative apps, usually make use of applications which support PPT files. This is why PowerPoint for Android is number one of our list of best presentation apps for Android.

While users have complained about the need for an Office 365 account to use the PowerPoint app for Android , however, there is no denying the fact that it is indeed the real deal when it comes to Android presentation apps. PowerPoint for Android supports many features that many so called PowerPoint alternatives on the Play Store have failed to provide. This includes features like: support for PowerPoint charts; transitions and animations; and integration with SharePoint and major cloud storage services.

You can access files from not only your Android device but also via OneDrive, Google Drive, box, DropBox and SharePoint. Furthermore, you can create, edit and present presentations right from your Android device.

PowerPoint for Android is not without its limitations, as it is not as powerful as its desktop version. Unfortunately, you cannot do much with the app unless you are logged in with an Office 365 account.

If you’re wondering why would you use a paid app instead of the dozens of free alternatives on the Google Play Store, the answer is simple. PowerPoint for Android not only provides support for many native features that other apps can’t provide but also enables making high-quality slides; something a professional presenter desperately needs to have.

Furthermore, your imported PowerPoint files will not have any missing charts, animations or pixelated images when you open them on Android. Moreover, you can safely use PowerPoint for Android for presenting your slides by connecting your Android device to a projector using a PC, Chromecast, Miracast, etc.

2) Google Slides

If you don’t want to pay for an Office 365 subscription, Google Slides is the next best alternative. What started as a cloud based imitation of PowerPoint has come a long way. While Google Slides has a long way to go, as explained in our post about Google Slides Vs PowerPoint ; it gives adequate options for making a good looking presentation.

With the Google Slides app for Android you can create, edit and present your presentations from an Android device. Furthermore, it supports PowerPoint files, which can help you use this app as a free alternative to the Office 365 subscription based PowerPoint for Android app.

If you’ve never used the web based version of Google Slides or haven’t tried it since its rebranding, it has come a long way. A few years back I would not have fancied importing a PowerPoint presentation to Google Slides but all that has now changed. The imported PowerPoint files have much better editability and few slides (if any) get botched after import.

The only downside of using Google Slides is that you can’t do much without internet connectivity. For example, you need online connectivity for making a presentation. This can be a buzzkill for people looking for an app they can use without keeping their mobile data packages on when making slides on the go.

Needless to say, Google Slides comes integrated with Google Drive and gives you access for your presentation files via your Google account. While Google Slides is no PowerPoint, however, it can help you get the job done with all basic functions a presenter might need. Furthermore, it’s also a good enough option for viewing and editing PowerPoint files for free on an Android device.

3) WPS Office+PDF

I have been using WPS Office for as long as I have owned an Android device. This is one of the oldest Office Suites for Android and one of the best ones available for free. With WPS Office you can create, view and edit Office files, including presentations, with support for PowerPoint files.

WPS Office also provides a number of other handy functions, such as wireless printing support for Office and PDF files, a reader-friendly mobile mode for PDF files and documents, built-in image editing functionality, track changes, etc.

It can be safely assumed that after PowerPoint for Android and Google Slides, WPS Office has the features and smooth functionality which makes it a viable Android app for creating, viewing, editing and presenting presentations.

4)  Polaris Office+PDF

Many Android devices come with the Polaris Viewer, which makes it possible to view MS Office files on Android devices. Polaris has many apps for Android, including separate apps for LG devices, Symantec mobility suite, and an enterprise version known as Polaris Good. Polaris Office+PDF is a free Office suite which can be used for viewing and editing MS Office files, including PowerPoint presentations.

Polaris Office also provides a number of other useful features, such as the ability to take notes with handwriting, passcode protection for documents, document sharing and commenting features, etc. Polaris Office+PDF is a free Android app, which offers in-app purchases.

5) Smart Office 2

Smart Office 2 for Android is one of many Office apps which came way before Microsoft woke up from its slumber. This app is not just a mere PowerPoint alternative for Android but an entire Office suite. Smart Office 2 is a free app, which supports creating, editing, viewing, printing and sharing Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. It also provides support for viewing PDF and image files, including GIF animations ad Vector Graphics (WMF & EMF).

Smart Office 2 also enables converting Office files to PDF format, with the utility to annotate PDF files. You can use Smart Office for presenting PowerPoint and PDF presentation using your Android device. Smart Office 2 also gives templates for creating Office files, including PowerPoint presentations.

While Smart Office 2 is not as feature rich as PowerPoint for Android or Google Slides, it does serve as the poor man’s PowerPoint and can perform many basic functions you would expect in an office suite. Something that I personally find lacking in this app is the lacklustre interface and slower functionality. This is why WPS and Polaris Office are ranked higher in our list.

Presentations aren’t necessarily supposed to be all about PowerPoint slides. There are many useful apps that can go beyond support for PPTs and actually deliver a platform which can make professional presenters stand out from the crowd. ShowPad is one such service, which makes it possible for presenters engaged in sales and marketing to deliver robust presentations on the fly.

ShowPad is a sales enablement platform. In other words, it is a service which allows bringing together all your marketing data to create custom presentations according to specific customer needs. This might include PPTs, PDF files, Word documents, videos and relevant images.

The ShowPad app for Android is an extension of the ShowPad web service, which gives a plethora of options to access sales data for presenting your sales pitch anytime, using interactive tools. ShowPad is a paid service which can be tested out using a free trial account.

7) MightyMeeting

MightyMeeting is not your average presentation app, as it integrates web conferencing with polls, whiteboards and PowerPoint slides to provide a comprehensive platform for presenters. MightyMeeting is perfect for remote presentations and for delivering your presentation during a webinar or online conference.

Like ShowPad, MightyMeeting app for Android is an extension of a web service. You can instantly start online meetings, invite attendees and begin presenting your content using PowerPoint slides, whiteboards, videos and even conduct polls to gather opinion from meeting participants.

MightyMeeting is a paid service but you can take it for a spin using a trial account. Read a more detailed review of MightyMeeting here .

8)  AIO Remote

You might have used apps that turn your Android device into a presentation remote. And when it comes to the best Android presentation remote app, AIO Remote is a clear winner. When I first installed this app, I didn’t expect much, however, I was amazed by its smooth functionality and wide range of features.

AIO Remote can not only be used if you are presenting PowerPoint slides on your computer but even if you are using another presentation app. This is because AIO has features for controlling not just PowerPoint slides but your entire computer. With AIO Remote you can control your mouse pad, turn your Android device into a joystick, browse your PC files, control your media player, as well as create custom remotes by specifying control variables.

AIO Remote for Android is free to use and works with Windows, Mac and Linux. AIO also has a mobile version for Kindle tablets. You can connect AIO Remote via Android to your computer using a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection.

You can find a more detailed review of AIO Remote here.

AIO Remote screenshot

9) Office Remote

Office Remote is an official app by Microsoft which is meant to remotely control Office apps on PC using Android devices. Office Remote can not only control PowerPoint running on a PC but also other Office apps like Word and Excel.

Office Remote is a free app and requires Bluetooth connectivity between a PC and Android device. Like any remote control app for Android, you will require installing a desktop plugin for MS Office on your PC and the Android app for Office remote on your Android smartphone or tablet.

Office Remote screenshot

10)  AirDroid

When it comes to Android apps providing remote control, AirDroid is indeed a novelty. This is not your conventional Android remote, since it does pretty much the opposite of what AIO Remote and Office Remote Offer; i.e. you can remotely control your Android device via PC, Mac or web browser.

Now, being a presenter you might be wondering what good can AirDroid be for you? The answer is simple. AirDroid be useful to remotely accessing your Android device to Mirror it on a PC or Mac connected to a projector. Moreover, you can use it to remotely send SMS, transfer files, control your mobile camera, play and manage audio and video files, as well as transfer files to your computer without the need for wired connectivity.

In other words, whether you want to mirror your Android on a projector via computer, remotely control your Android device during a presentation or need to quickly transfer a file from your Android device to a computer, AirDroid can help you do all that. Furthermore, if you intend to share something like a WhatsApp chat, video or need to demonstrate something using your Android device, you can show it all on the big screen.

AirDroid is a free app but offers some in-app purchases.

AirDroid screenshot

The above list is meant to provide our fellow presenters with useful apps to help them use their Android devices more effectively for presenting presentations. We excluded apps which we thought were not user-friendly enough or lacked essential features.

This is why Prezi did not make it to our list. Unfortunately, Prezi currently only has a Prezi Viewer for Android and its mobile site doesn’t make it any easy to create presentations from an Android browser.

Similarly, we did not include many presentation remote apps, since the ones mentioned in this post come with comprehensive features that are hard to match by other Android apps.

If you think we missed out a presentation app for Android which should be on this list, feel free to share your thoughts via our comments section.

Some features of certain apps might require online connectivity. However, most of the apps have some kind of offline support. WP Office for instance provides complete offline support, similarly, you can connect AIO Remote via Bluetooth.

Not to be left behind, Apple launched its own presentation app called Keynote. As is pretty common with most Apple apps, Keynote is only available for iOS and macOS platform. So much for cross-platform compatibility. Apple released Keynote for iCloud which works on browser so Windows users could use it but the experience is not the same. Keynote comes with a lot of animations and graphics that you can use in your presentation slides.

There are themes, templates, fonts, colors, and backgrounds to choose from. 4. Google Slides

Not to be left behind, Google launched its own office suite of productivity apps including Slides, a presentation app that works in the browser and mobile apps alike. Slides is completely free even if you are not a paid user and there are no ads. Since most people use Gmail and have a Drive account, using Slides makes a lot of sense. It got all the features you did expect from a presentation app like fonts, colors, sharing and collaborating features, comments which is present in all GSuite apps, and templates.

There is a presentation mode with speaker notes. You can present all the slides from your smartphone directly. The templates are pretty basic and nothing compared to what I saw in Keynotes. Slides biggest strength is real-time collaboration and how it makes it dead simple to make presentations.

  • Share, collaborate, comment
  • Presentation view
  • Simple and easy to use
  • No native client for Windows, macOS

5. Haiku Deck

Haiku Deck will completely change the way you create, edit, share, and present slides. With an Instagram like interface, Haiku will give you instant access to over 40 million stock images. That’s a lot.  It connects with a number of social media sites to import images from there as well.

Haiku Deck offers beautiful templates that are clutter-free and are designed with their own custom font. There is an option to insert pie or bar chart on the fly. Just insert the values and choose a location. Text will be aligned and spaced automatically so you don’t have to do it manually. AI at its best and a real time saver. On the flip side, Haiku Deck won’t allow you to make design choices, keeping things a little inflexible. Pricing begins at $9.99 per month. Too bad it works on Apple devices only.

prezi presentation app

Because Prezi is also on your smartphone, you don’t have to turn back and look at the screen every now and then. Just glance at your phone to view the slide, and slide notes, and carry on. Other features like sharing and collaborating are all there. Pricing begins at $5 per month.

Hardcore Apple users should go for Keynote because it’s got killer animations. Haiku Deck got the largest collection of stock photos and connects with every social media site out there.

5 Of The Best Apps To Create And Edit Presentations On Android Devices

woman showing presentation on phone

Whether you're attending school or are part of the corporate world, you're likely no stranger to presentations. They're a staple in both academic and professional settings as they're one of the best ways to share ideas with your class, client, or higher-ups. Normally, you'd rely on your computer to create your presentations, but it isn't exactly convenient for on-the-fly edits. After all, you can't just open your laptop as you're running to class or on an elevator on the way to a board meeting. You'd need something more portable for last-minute tweaks like adding speaker notes or changing the image caption in your slides.

Thankfully, you're not without options as there's a plethora of apps on the Play Store designed to help you whip up or polish presentations right from your Android device. What's even better is that some of these apps don't require you to be online, so you can stay productive anytime, anywhere. We've narrowed down the search and came up with five of the best presentation apps for Android you need to try.

Google Slides

If you're already in the Google ecosystem and using apps like Drive, Meet, and Calendar,  Google Slides is one of the top presentation apps for you. One of its main draws is its seamless interconnectivity with other Google products. Create a presentation in the Slides app, and it will pop up in Drive automatically. Punch in your Google Meet meeting ID, and you can show your presentation directly in Slides -– no need to install the Meet app itself. Connect Slides with your Calendar, and you can also start presenting your Slides file for a scheduled meeting in Meet. Another nifty presentation feature of Slides is its live Q&A session that allows you to display questions on the screen as you go.

Editing and creating presentations from scratch is a breeze in Slides, too. There are several Slides templates to get you started, along with a handful of themes and layouts you can switch to depending on your style and content. Slides comes with all the standard formatting options at your disposal, including font styles, sizes, colors, and emphasis (e.g., bold, italics, underline). Just like in other Google products like Docs and Sheets, Slides lets you leave comments and enable offline use for certain files.

Google Slides won't cost you a dime — all you need is a Google account. The downside, however, is that the Android app has limited font styles and doesn't let you add slide transitions. For those extras, you'll need to open your presentation in the web app on a computer.

Microsoft Powerpoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is most people's go-to presentation platform, and for good reason. The mobile app mirrors the look and functionality of its desktop and web counterparts, so you won't have a hard time navigating and using the platform. You'll find nearly all the editing tools you'd expect from the desktop and web apps, including layout adjustments, text formatting, drawing capabilities, themes, transitions, animations, and review and view modes for inserting comments and notes. Even the handy search functionality is featured in the mobile app. PowerPoint also syncs to your OneDrive in real-time (provided you're connected to the internet), making it pretty easy to switch editing between your phone and computer.

Similar to desktop and web apps, the PowerPoint mobile app allows you to present directly on your device in full-screen, complete with extra presentation aids. There's an ink tool for live annotations that you can choose to keep in the file like drawings. The app also offers a button to display a blank screen, a handy tool for Q&A sessions, or when you're using PowerPoint for quizzes and need to temporarily hide questions from students.

Downloading the PowerPoint mobile app is free, but there's a catch: if you're using a free personal account, you can only view presentations you've previously made using the desktop/web app. You can't create a new presentation or edit existing ones without subscribing to a premium plan first.

One of the affordable alternatives for Microsoft Word , WPS Office comes complete with a presentation maker and editor too. What makes it stand out from other presentation apps is its extensive collection of templates, sorted into neat categories like education, business, nature, minimal, work report, album, and medical. You can choose from at least 70 templates for education-related presentations, 40 templates for business presentations, and 30 templates for work reports, most of which are free to edit. Speaking of editing, WPS Office includes most of the standard tools you need. There are text styling features, transitions, animations, and layout options. You can also insert different extra content like a picture, background music, audio, video, shape, table, and chart into your slides.

On the other hand, WPS Office's presentation tools are beyond the basics. You can opt to auto-play your presentation for convenience, selectively hide or show certain slides, and annotate the slides with the ink tool. Another handy presentation feature is the PPT Recorder which allows you to record your presentation in full-screen, complete with audio and ink annotations. There's also a Miracast option right within the app, so you can readily cast the presentation to a bigger screen.

WPS Office is free to download and use, but you do need to sign into an account to create a presentation. If you feel like the free account is too basic, feel free to upgrade to WPS Pro which comes with extra features like document merging, image-to-PDF converter, PDF editor, document recovery, and bigger cloud space.

While you probably know Canva as a free photo editing app for Android, it's actually an excellent platform for creating and editing presentations on mobile as well. However, you'll notice it doesn't quite echo the vibe of Google Slides, PowerPoint, or WPS Office as its interface is a world away from the three (but you really won't need to spend days getting the hang of it, thanks to its intuitive and user-friendly design). Canva's customizable templates are also different from other presentation apps not only because they come in varied styles (e.g., elegant, corporate, pastel), themes (e.g., game, brainstorm, quiz), and colors but also because you can pick from more than one size (16:9, 4:3, or mobile-first).

Another thing that sets Canva apart is its app integrations. There are apps that allow you to create a QR code, use photos from Pixabay or Pexels, turn a photo into an anime-style graphic, and even translate text all within Canva. Beyond the typical photos and videos, Canva also lets you insert other fancy elements like AI-generated images, pre-made graphics, and charts into your presentation without needing to import them from your local storage. And yes, you can also run your presentation straight from the app. All of these neat features, however, are only accessible when you're connected to the internet. You can't use Canva offline.

Canva is free, but there's a Pro tier for those looking for other advanced features like image background remover, file resizer, and access to Pro templates.

Presentation Creator

Presentation Creator is similar to Canva in several ways, especially when it comes to user interface and features. Moving away from the familiar style of traditional presentation apps like PowerPoint or Google Slides, its UI leans more towards the feel of a photo editor. Its features also resemble that of photo editors, much like Canva. You'll find an element tab featuring dozens of graphics and line drawings, a text tab allowing you to add simple text, text within graphics, or AI-generated content, and a video tab letting you insert videos from YouTube, Google Photos, or your gallery. There's also an images tab providing you access not only to stock photos but also pictures from your storage and third-party sources like Facebook, Google Photos, and Google Drive.

Another nifty thing about Presentation Creator is that you can download your slides as JPG, PNG, or PDF, with options to use a transparent background if you prefer. Like other presentation apps, you can also present your slides within Presentation Creator. However, the presentation tools are pretty basic, with only the option to display the slides full screen and show or hide the next slides.

You only need to sign up for an account to use Presentation Creator, but to access more features like more stock images, background remover, AI content writer, and PDF editor, among many others, you need to upgrade to the Pro+.

  •  Interoperability with PowerPoint files
  •  Basic, user-friendly interface
  •  Third-party extensions for enhanced functionality

Canva

The only reason I did not place Canva first on the list is that it is not an exclusive choice for presentation apps for Android. It is basically for graphic designing, but it is not any less of a presentation tool. Canva offers diverse templates specifically for presentations.

Canva has a freemium version with pretty good features, but the subscription offers a good bang for your buck. While PowerPoint offers 600 fonts, Canva offers 3000. Keep reading our blog on how to use Canva the complete guide to know more about. It supports various formats, though not as much as PowerPoint does. It generates more intuitive and high-quality search results.

Also, if you are to use certain brand logos and themes for your presentations, it has a custom template and custom kit features. It has a much more sophisticated background removal feature. Canva supports mobile presentations in vertical mode.

As Canva is a cloud-based app, you cannot access it offline. Additionally, due to the extensive range of options, and Canva’s broader focus beyond presentations, there is a chance that presentations could become too fancy.

  • Converting slides into a website format
  • Collaborating on design work
  • Pre Recorded narration with presentation
  • More intuitive search results
  • Custom brand-kit feature

4. Zoho Show

Zoho Show

The Zoho Show, though not quite as powerful as the mainstream competitors, is a decent app for making presentations with these presentation apps for Android. It lets you create, collaborate, present, broadcast, and publish presentations. Just like how your presentations should be, this app looks clean and beautiful and is not at all distracting.

Zoho Show supports the import of a variety of files, videos, and audio, putting compatibility concerns to rest. It is a recommendable platform for real-time collaboration. It comes with an array of elements, encompassing diverse chart types, over a hundred shapes, an assortment of formatting choices, filters, animations, and additional features.

Zoho Show enables the publication of presentations on websites, and even allows sharing with non-Zoho users, but granting editing authorization is up to you. All in all, Zoho Show presents a reliable option for those seeking for balanced and user-friendly presentation apps for Android.

Zoho Show provides free access for personal use, although team collaboration necessitates an upgrade. Zoho is also cloud-based, making it not a great option to use when offline.

  • Built-in animations
  • Real-time collaboration feature
  • Safe sharing and publishing feature (website, blog, etc.,)
  • Import and Export Functionalities

The best presentation software in 2024

These powerpoint alternatives go beyond the basics..

Hero image with logos of the best presentation software

The latest presentation apps have made it easier than ever to format slides and create professional-looking slideshows without giving off a "this is a template" vibe. Even standard PowerPoint alternatives have updated key features to make it easier than ever to collaborate and create presentations quickly, so you can spend more time prepping for your actual presentation.

If, like me, you've used Google Slides unquestioningly for years, it's a whole new world out there. The newest crop of online presentation tools go way beyond the classic slideshow experience, with new features to keep your audience's attention, streamline the creation process with AI, and turn slide decks into videos and interactive conversations.

I've been testing these apps for the past few years, and this time, I spent several days tinkering with 25 of the top presentation software solutions out there to bring you the best of the best.

The best presentation software

What makes the best presentation app, how we evaluate and test apps.

When looking for the best presentation apps, I wanted utility players. After all, slideshows are used for just about everything, from pitch decks and product launches to class lectures and church sermons. With that in mind, here's what I was looking for:

Pre-built templates. The best presentation tools should have attractive, professional-looking templates to build presentations in a hurry.

Sharing and collaboration options. Whether you plan to share your webinar slides later, or you just want to collaborate with a coworker on a presentation, it should be easy to share files and collaborate in real-time.

Flexibility and customization options. Templates are great, but top presentation apps should enable you to customize just about everything—giving you the flexibility to build exactly what you need.

Affordability. Creating compelling presentations is important, but you shouldn't have to bust your budget to make it happen. With capable free tools on the market, affordability is a top consideration.

Standalone functionality. There's no reason to use multiple tools when one can do it all, so I didn't test any apps that require and work on top of another presentation app like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Familiar, deck-based interface. For our purposes here, I only tested software that uses slides, with the familiar deck-based editor you expect from a "presentation" tool (versus, for example, a video creation app).

Beyond that, I also looked for presentation apps that brought something unique to the table—features above and beyond what you can get for free from a legacy solution like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Here's what my testing workflow looked like:

I went through any onboarding or guided tutorials.

I created a new deck, scanning through all available templates, noting how well-designed they were (and which were free versus paid).

I added new slides, deleted slides, edited text and images, and played around with other content types.

I changed presentation design settings, like color schemes and background images.

I reviewed and tested the sharing and collaboration options.

I tested out presenter view (when available).

After my first round of testing, I went back into the top performers to test any unique or niche features, like AI, brand settings, and interactive content. With that, these are the best presentation apps I found—each one really brings something different or radically easy to the table.

Canva, our pick for the best free presentation app

Canva pros:

Excellent free plan

Tons of amazing templates for all use cases

Feature-rich

Canva cons:

The AI tools aren't groundbreakingly useful

Canva offers one of the most robust free plans of all the presentation apps I tested. The app delays account creation until after you've created your first design, so you can get started building your presentation in seconds. Choose from an almost overwhelming number of beautiful templates (nearly all available for free), including those designed specifically for education or business use cases.

Anyone who's accidentally scrolled too far and been bumped to the next slide will appreciate Canva's editor interface, which eliminates that problem altogether with a smooth scroll that doesn't jump around. Choose from a handful of preset animations to add life to your presentations, or browse the library of audio and video files available to add. And Canva also has a number of options for sharing your presentation, including adding collaborators to your team, sharing directly to social media, and even via QR code.

Present directly from Canva, and let audience members submit their questions via Canva Live. Once you share a link to invite audience members to your presentation, they can send questions for you to answer. As the presenter, you'll see them pop up in your presenter view window, so you can keep the audience engaged and your presentation clear. Alternatively, record a presentation with a talking head bubble—you can even use an AI presenter here—to share remotely.

Canva pricing: Free plan available; paid plans start at $120/year for 1 user and include additional features like Brand Kit, premium templates and stock assets, and additional AI-powered design tools.

The best presentation app for AI-powered design

.css-yjptlz-link{all:unset;box-sizing:border-box;-webkit-text-decoration:underline;text-decoration:underline;cursor:pointer;-webkit-transition:all 300ms ease-in-out;transition:all 300ms ease-in-out;outline-offset:1px;-webkit-text-fill-color:currentcolor;outline:1px solid transparent;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']{color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']:hover{color:#2b2358;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']:focus{color:#3d4592;outline-color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']{color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']:hover{color:#a8a5a0;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']:focus{color:#fffdf9;outline-color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']{color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']:hover{color:#2b2358;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']:focus{color:#3d4592;outline-color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']{color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']:hover{color:#a8a5a0;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']:focus{color:#fffdf9;outline-color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='inherit']{font-weight:inherit;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='normal']{font-weight:400;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='bold']{font-weight:700;} beautiful.ai (web, mac, windows).

Beautiful.ai pros:

True AI design

No fussing around with alignment

Still allows for customization

Beautiful.ai cons:

No free plan

If you're like me, editing granular spacing issues is the absolute worst part of building a presentation. Beautiful.ai uses artificial intelligence to take a lot of the hassle and granular design requirements out of the presentation process, so you can focus on the content of a presentation without sacrificing professional design. If I needed to make presentations on a regular basis, this is the app I'd use.

Many apps have recently added AI design features, but Beautiful.ai has been doing it for years—and they've perfected the experience of AI design, ensuring the tool's reign as the most streamlined and user-friendly option for AI design.

The editor is a little different from most presentation apps, but it's still intuitive—and you'll start off with a quick two-minute tutorial. When creating a new slide, scroll through "inspiration slides" to find a layout you like; once you choose, the app will pull the layout and automatically adapt it to match the design of the rest of your presentation.

With 10 themes, several templated slides, over 40 fully-designed templates, and more than 20 different color palettes to choose from, Beautiful.ai strikes a perfect balance between automation and customization.

While Beautiful.ai doesn't offer a free plan, paid plans are reasonably priced and offer sharing and collaboration options that rival collab-focused apps like Google Slides. And speaking of Google, you can connect Beautiful.ai with Google Drive to save all your presentations there.

Note: I re-tested the generative AI feature (called DesignerBot) this year. It's great for adding individual slides to an existing presentation—automatically choosing the best layout and matching the design to the rest of the deck—but as with most other apps, it struggled to pull in relevant images.

Beautiful.ai pricing: Plans start at $12/month for unlimited slides, AI content generation, viewer analytics, and more. Upgrade to a Team plan for $40/user/month to get extra collaboration and workspace features and custom brand controls.

The best presentation app for conversational presentations

.css-yjptlz-link{all:unset;box-sizing:border-box;-webkit-text-decoration:underline;text-decoration:underline;cursor:pointer;-webkit-transition:all 300ms ease-in-out;transition:all 300ms ease-in-out;outline-offset:1px;-webkit-text-fill-color:currentcolor;outline:1px solid transparent;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']{color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']:hover{color:#2b2358;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']:focus{color:#3d4592;outline-color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']{color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']:hover{color:#a8a5a0;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']:focus{color:#fffdf9;outline-color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']{color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']:hover{color:#2b2358;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']:focus{color:#3d4592;outline-color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']{color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']:hover{color:#a8a5a0;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']:focus{color:#fffdf9;outline-color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='inherit']{font-weight:inherit;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='normal']{font-weight:400;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='bold']{font-weight:700;} prezi (web, mac, windows, ios, android).

Prezi pros:

Doesn't restrict you to standard presentation structure

Lots of customization options

Prezi Video lets you display a presentation right over your webcam video

Prezi cons:

Steep learning curve

Struggling to squeeze information into a basic, linear presentation? Give Prezi a try. Unlike nearly all other presentation apps on the market, Prezi Present doesn't restrict the structure of your presentation to a straight line. The editor focuses on topics and subtopics and allows you to arrange them any way you want, so you can create a more conversational flow of information.

With the structural flexibility, you still get all the same customization features you expect from top presentation software, including fully-editable templates. There's a learning curve if you're unfamiliar with non-linear presentations, but templates offer a great jumping-off point, and Prezi's editor does a good job of making the process more approachable.

Plus, Prezi comes with two other apps: Prezi Design and Prezi Video. Prezi Video helps you take remote presentations to a new level. You can record a video where the presentation elements are displayed right over your webcam feed. Record and save the video to share later, or connect with your video conferencing tool of choice (including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet) to present live.

Prezi's generative AI feature works ok, but it's more useful as a wireframe. When I asked it to create a presentation about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, for example, the resulting content read a lot like a student writing a term paper in the broadest strokes possible to avoid doing any actual research.

The best presentation app for video presentations

.css-yjptlz-link{all:unset;box-sizing:border-box;-webkit-text-decoration:underline;text-decoration:underline;cursor:pointer;-webkit-transition:all 300ms ease-in-out;transition:all 300ms ease-in-out;outline-offset:1px;-webkit-text-fill-color:currentcolor;outline:1px solid transparent;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']{color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']:hover{color:#2b2358;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']:focus{color:#3d4592;outline-color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']{color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']:hover{color:#a8a5a0;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']:focus{color:#fffdf9;outline-color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']{color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']:hover{color:#2b2358;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']:focus{color:#3d4592;outline-color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']{color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']:hover{color:#a8a5a0;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']:focus{color:#fffdf9;outline-color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='inherit']{font-weight:inherit;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='normal']{font-weight:400;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='bold']{font-weight:700;} powtoon (web, ios, android).

Powtoon pros:

Timing automatically changes based on the content on the slide

Can toggle between slideshow and video

Can orient presentation as horizontal, vertical, or square

Powtoon cons:

Limited free plan

Powtoon makes it easy to create engaging videos by orienting the editor around a slide deck. Editing a Powtoon feels just like editing a presentation, but by the time you finish, you have a professional video.

You can edit your slides at any time, and when you hit play, a video plays through your deck—the feel is almost like an animated explainer video. Each slide includes the animations you choose and takes up as much time as is needed based on the content on the slide. Powtoon figures the timing automatically, and you can see in the bottom-right of the editor how much time is used on your current slide versus the total presentation. If you ever want to present as a slide deck, just toggle between Slideshow and Movie.

You'll likely need to subscribe to a paid plan to get the most out of Powtoon—like creating videos longer than three minutes, downloading them as MP4 files, and white-labeling your presentations—but doing so won't break the bank. Plus, you'll unlock tons of templates complete with animations and soundtracks.

One of my favorite Powtoon features is the ability to orient your video: you can choose horizontal orientation (like a normal presentation) or opt for vertical (for mobile) or square (for social media). When your presentation is ready, you can publish straight to YouTube, Wistia, Facebook Ads, and any number of other locations.

Pitch, our pick for the best presentation software for collaborating with your team

Pitch pros:

Google levels of collaboration

Assign slides to specific team members

Excellent generative AI feature

Pitch cons:

User interface is a little different than you're used to

Need to collaborate on presentations with your team? Pitch is a Google Slides alternative that gets the job done. As far as decks go, Pitch includes all the beautifully-designed templates, customizability, and ease of use you expect from a top-notch presentation tool. But the app really shines when you add your team.

The right-hand sidebar is all about project management and collaboration: you can set and update the status of your deck, assign entire presentations or individual slides to team members, plus comment or add notes. Save custom templates to make future presentations even easier and faster.

You can also invite collaborators from outside your company to work with you on individual decks. And if you opt for a paid plan, Pitch introduces workspace roles, shared private folders, and version history.

Pitch also offers one of the most impressive generative AI features on this list. It still struggles to pull in relevant images, but I found the AI-generated written content and design to be top-notch.

The best presentation app for conversational AI

.css-yjptlz-link{all:unset;box-sizing:border-box;-webkit-text-decoration:underline;text-decoration:underline;cursor:pointer;-webkit-transition:all 300ms ease-in-out;transition:all 300ms ease-in-out;outline-offset:1px;-webkit-text-fill-color:currentcolor;outline:1px solid transparent;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']{color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']:hover{color:#2b2358;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='ocean']:focus{color:#3d4592;outline-color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']{color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']:hover{color:#a8a5a0;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='white']:focus{color:#fffdf9;outline-color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']{color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']:hover{color:#2b2358;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='primary']:focus{color:#3d4592;outline-color:#3d4592;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']{color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']:hover{color:#a8a5a0;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-color='secondary']:focus{color:#fffdf9;outline-color:#fffdf9;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='inherit']{font-weight:inherit;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='normal']{font-weight:400;}.css-yjptlz-link[data-weight='bold']{font-weight:700;} gamma (web).

Gamma pros:

Creates fully fleshed-out presentations from a prompt

Conversational chatbot-like experience

Can still manually edit the presentation

Gamma cons:

Not as much granular customization

I tested a lot of apps claiming to use AI to up your presentation game, and Gamma's conversational AI features were head and shoulders above the crowd.

Simply give the app a topic—or upload an outline, notes, or any other document or article—approve the outline, and pick a theme. The app will take it from there and create a fully fleshed-out presentation. It's far from perfect, but Gamma produces a very useful jumping-off point. (Last year, it was by far the best, but this year, other apps are catching up.)

Here's the key: Gamma is much more geared toward the iterative, chatbot experience familiar to ChatGPT users. Click on the Edit with AI button at the top of the right-hand menu to open the chat, and you'll see suggested prompts—or you can type in your own requests for how Gamma should alter the presentation.

Once you've done all you can with prompts, simply close the chat box to manually add the finishing touches. While you do sacrifice some granular customizability in exchange for the AI features, you can still choose your visual theme, change slide layouts, format text, and add any images, videos, or even app and web content.

Mentimeter, our pick for the best presentation software for audience engagement

Mentimeter pros:

Tons of audience engagement features

Simple for participants to interact

Mentimeter cons:

Less granular customizability

Bit of a learning curve

If you need to engage with an audience during your presentation, Mentimeter makes that easy. The app is designed around interactive elements like quizzes, surveys, Q&As, sliders, and more (even a Miro whiteboard!).

Each of these is included in a number of different, professional-looking templates, so you can build a fully interactive presentation super quickly.

When it's time to present, your audience members can scan the QR code with their phone cameras or type in the URL and access code to participate. There's one code per presentation (so they won't have to do this on every slide), which gives access to each slide as you move through the presentation.

There are two main drawbacks to this one, though. First, there's a bit of a learning curve and less familiar editing interface (but I found it pretty easy to learn with some practice). The other drawback is that you can't get as granular with the visual customization as you can with many other presentation tools.

Tome, our pick for the best presentation software for generative AI

Top-tier generative AI features

Simple, customizable templates

Intuitive doc-style editor

There's definitely a learning curve

Tome is one of the new additions to this list that I'm most excited about. If you're looking for generative AI that just genuinely works , it's definitely worth a look. The editor is a bit more stripped down than most presentation apps but intuitive nonetheless—it's almost a cross between your standard deck editor and a Notion-style doc.

To generate an AI deck, click Generate with AI in the top right, and either write your own prompt or choose from the example prompts that cover a handful of common use cases, like sales enablement and company pitches. Edit or approve the suggested outline, then generate the full presentation.

From there, you can edit each slide as a doc via the right-hand menu—without limits on how much information you can include. During the presentation, you simply size down any slides that take up more than the standard amount of space. It's super simple but somehow feels revolutionary in a presentation app.

What about the old standbys?

You might notice a few major presentation players aren't on this list, including OGs Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, and Google Slides. These apps are perfectly adequate for creating basic presentations, and they're free if you have a Windows or Mac device or a Google account.

I didn't include them on the list because the presentation space has really developed in the last several years, and after testing them out, I found these behemoths haven't kept pace. If they weren't made by Microsoft/Apple/Google, I might not even be mentioning them. They're pretty basic tools, they're behind the curve when it comes to templates (both quantity and design), and they don't offer any uniquely valuable features like robust team collaboration, branding controls, video, and so on.

In any case, if you're reading this, you're probably looking for an alternative that allows you to move away from one of the big 3, and as the presentation platforms featured above show, there's a ton to gain—in terms of features, usability, and more—when you do.

What about PowerPoint and Google Slides add-ons?

While I focused my testing on tools with full feature-sets—those that can serve as your sole presentation tool—there are a ton of add-on tools you can use atop big name tools like PowerPoint and Google Slides.

Smartphone apps

Can your smartphone make you a better speaker?

We use our smartphones for just about everything, and they certainly can help you improve your talks and audience engagement.

A few years ago, we posted an article on the 21 apps that you can use to improve your talks, and today we are updating this list with 10 new, tried and tested apps that can help you master your speaking techniques.

Let’s jump right in.

Create dynamic, visually powerful presentations

Create dynamic, visually powerful presentations_SpeakerHub

1.   Voice Notes + Dictation

Some speakers find it easier to get into the flow and say what they are thinking, rather than write out what they would like to say. Voice Notes is one of the highest-rated free transcription apps and can help you by recording what you say and turning the recording into text. You can work out your content through various renditions of the recording, and then find the flow that will work best for your talk.

2.  KeyNote ,  PowerPoint ,  Google Slides , and  Prezi

All of your favorite slide creation platforms: KeyNote, PowerPoint, Google Slides and Prezi, are available as smartphone apps. Create and change your presentation on the go, keep them on hand so you can practice your talk anywhere, and have an immediate backup in case the tech fails at your next event.

KeyNote on  Android  |  iOS

PowerPoint on  Android  |  iOS

Google Slides on  Android  |  iOS

Prezi on  Android  |  iOS

While PowerPoint has been a keystone for many presentations for years, below are two newer apps which can help you create visually compelling slides that integrate video, images, and audio flawlessly, while you are on the go.

3. FlowVella

Flowvella has been created specifically for iPhones and iPads, and is one of the best new platforms for creating fully integrated and interactive presentations. It has been specifically designed and developed for tablet usage, and uses smart gesture technology. It allows you to flawlessly integrate media from all kinds of different sources so you never get caught awkwardly waiting for a video to connect or being forced to screenshot or open a PDF to include in the presentation.

4. Haiku Deck

Haiku Deck makes the most beautifully-designed presentations. It is near impossible to make an unattractive presentation with this tool. It is only available as an app: which is perfect if you are on the go or your smartphone is your go-to device. If you are looking for a simple, easy tool that makes gorgeous slides, this is the one for you.

Android | iOS

John Medina, a developmental molecular biologist and lecturer at the University of Washington, says that our brains will inevitably start to get bored after a mere 10 minutes , and by changing up the content style every 7-10 minutes, you can keep your audience engaged throughout your entire presentation. With Powtoon, you can create short informational animations that can help explain a specific point or an in-depth piece of information; keeping your audience engaged while still getting your idea across.

6. AIO Remote

Turn your Android smartphone into a presentation remote with the All In One Remote. All you need do is sync the presentation with the app and desktop app and you are ready to go. Integrates with Windows, Linux and Mac, and you can control any application on your computer through WiFi or Bluetooth. And it’s free!

Practice makes perfect

Practice makes perfect_SpeakerHub

There is a fine line between over- and under-practicing your speech. Practice your talk until you know all your main points without hesitation, but still sound conversational and flexible.

Stop using filler words and improve your pronunciation

Most people use filler words like “um” and “ah” when they are speaking. However, when on stage this can be very distracting for your audience. Download the Ummo app to get a handle on your “ums” and “ahs”. The app records your speech, then generates a transcript highlighting where you used filler words. This way you can tackle making sure you omit them from your future talks.

This app was designed for non-native English speaker and speakers who struggle with speech impairments. Created by two international engineering students at Drexel University, Orai records your talk and gives you instant, action-oriented feedback which will help you to improve your pronunciation, pauses and energy levels, while offering speaking tips to help you improve the flow and make your talks more understandable.

This app will help you practice taking filler words out of your speaking. While Ummo will help you with your specific talk, what happens when you need to answer a question? The app will help you practice eliminating these words in unpracticed speech. There are two games: TalkAbout and FreeStyle, which record you speaking about various topics. The app monitors how many times you use filler words and gives you a detailed report to track your progress.

Timing is everything

Timing is everything

Timing can make or break a performance — as anyone who has sat in on a session that has overrun by 20 minutes knows.

These next apps will help you manage your timing and pacing. From establishing good speaking rhythms to countdown clocks, these apps will help you go with the flow and stay on time.

A teleprompter “prompts” you with a visual text of your presentation. It allows you to read the text word-for-word ensuring consistent and accurate speech while maintaining the illusion of spontaneity.

10. iPrompt Pro

iPrompt Pro is one of the most intuitive teleprompting apps. It has a lot of options: from colour choices to scrolling speeds. It also has in-app text editing and timing changes, which is ideal for making changes as you are practicing. Although, there is some heavy advertising on the app (which can be quite tiresome) it is a low-cost, flexible app that has a lot to offer.

11. Teleprompt +3

Teleprompt +3  is a simple and well-designed app that has incredible options that will help you practice your talk. The timer tools are very helpful for ensuring your session runs on time. Tools like the audio and video recorder, rich text editor, and intuitive speed control help you make your talk look and sound natural. This is one of the more expensive apps, but if you are looking for a tool that will go above and beyond your expectations for a teleprompter, this is it.

12. Prompster

Prompster is smoothly-designed and provides readable text for all sorts of audible presentations, including talks, lectures, and sermons. You can create or import your documents, record your presentation (pro version), and share your talk with your audience via email. The onscreen controls allow you to set your text size and speed easily. If you are looking for a great tool to practice with, this is a tried-and-true app. It was voted iPhoneLife Magazine’s Best Public Speaking and Presentation App.

13. Teleprompter Pro Lite

Teleprompter Pro (both Lite and Premium) are very responsive and easy to use. You can type in or import your talk, then select your font, text size, and pace. The app continuously highlights where you are in the script so you won’t get lost. You can share your scripts on all of your devices: ideal for setting up your backup solutions. You can export prompt files using AirDrop or email. The Pro version also has a video recording function, which is perfect for watching your practices and making improvements.

Normal conversational speech ranges between approximately 120-200 words per minute, and listening to someone speak outside of this range can be difficult.

For example, an auctioneer can speak upwards of 400 words per minute, but listening to someone speak for 20 minutes in this range will befuddle and irritate any audience. On the other hand, speaking at less than 110 wpm will cause the audience to get bored and tune out.

Speech rate guidelines:

Slow: less than 110 wpm

Conversational: between 110 wpm and 160 wpm.

Fast: more than 160 wpm

Radio hosts and podcasters tend to speak at 150-160 wpm.

Auctioneers and commentators speak between 250 and 400 wpm.

Using a metronome can help you set your pace, but don’t forget to vary your pace — keeping it too even will sound monotonous, so play around with your pacing until it is in the right range while still sounding natural.

14. Metronome Beats

Metronome Beats has easy-to-use controls for increasing and decreasing the tempo in small increments. The visual beat indicators help you to keep track, and it is easy to mute the metronome while visually monitoring your tempo.

15. Pro Metronome

Pro Metronome was created for all kinds of stage performers, including musicians, to improve their rhythm. It is a fantastic app for public speakers who are working on their pacing. This app has a variety of ways to keep your tempo: from screen color changes to vibrations and sounds.

Timers and Clocks

It is so easy to lose track of how long you’ve been on stage. Being able to keep your talk on time is crucial. It keeps you from waffling on and ensures that the whole event runs in a timely manner.

Having a timer will help you keep your presentation flowing on time.

16. Amber Light Speech Timer

Modeled after a traffic light, this app helps you figure out where you are in your talk and how long you have left to get your point home. A green light displays for the introduction and body of your talk and it changes to amber when you are getting close to the end, and red when your time is up. The app is easy to use and allows you to custom-set your time frames. You can even change the alarm to a vibration if you are keeping it in your pocket onstage.

17. Toastmaster Timer

This app was originally designed for those who play the “Timer”, the individual in Toastmaster’s meetings who signals to the speaker when it is time to finish. It is a superb, free option for practicing. The timer is simple to use and has been designed specifically for speakers. It also uses the traffic light system but has slightly less customizable options than the Amber Light Speech Timer.

18. SpeakerClock

The SpeakerClock was inspired by the famous countdown clock that is used at TED conferences. The LED-style countdown clock is easy to see, even from a distance, so you are free to move around on stage. This app has a great design, and also includes a traffic-light-style feature that alerts you when it is time to get to your conclusion.

Keep your pre-performance jitters under control

Keep your pre-performance jitters under control

While the above apps are practical and skills-focused, they don’t address one of the greatest challenges when speaking — stage fright.

Where a little bit of pre-stage anxiety is normal, if it tips into too much, it can have a detrimental effect and potentially ruin your talk.

These next few apps will help you manage your stress levels and bring your heart-rate back down. Helping you get your message out clearly and confidently.

19. Confident Public Speaking Now

This app is part guided meditation and part stress-relief training. It offers meditation-style hypnosis sessions, like “Relax Completely” and “Total Relaxation in 10 minutes”. It also offers video interviews on what causes, and how to deal with, stress. It aims to teach you how to enjoy small doses of stress and gives you some tools to help you deal effectively with anxiety.

20. Public Speaking by HiveBrain

Sometimes, all you need is some soothing, confidence-boosting words to get you in the right headspace. Dr Andrew Johnson's guided meditation / self-hypnosis program will help you relax and minimize the anxiety of speaking in front of crowds.

21. VirtualSpeech's Public Speaking

One of the most interesting new apps for public speakers helps you by putting you on a virtual stage. Upload your presentation, then practice in front of a fake audience. Best Slideshow Apps in 2024 (iPhone, Android & Desktop)

Explore a curated selection of paid and free slideshow apps for your smartphone to transform your photos and videos into captivating presentations.

This guide will take you through the best slideshow apps for smartphones (and more).

There’s nothing better than getting creative with the photos and videos you’ve taken and sharing the results with friends and family.

Of course, making these kinds of slideshows can have professional uses too and help you succeed in your job.

While the native software on both iPhone and Android can comfortably make slideshows (Videos in Photos on iPhone or Google Photos on Android), they aren’t as feature-rich as a dedicated slideshow maker.

The photo slideshow apps below have added features and were chosen based on their ease of use, functionality, and, honestly, how much fun they are to use.

Table of Contents

What is the Best Slideshow App for Smartphones in 2024?

Inshot (best photo slideshow app overall).

Instagram's new video editor is now available on the app store.

  • Lots of features
  • Reasonably priced
  • User-friendly
  • Can export 4K
  • Video slideshow features
  • Need to upgrade to maximise potential

Inshot is an excellent all-round video editing and photo slideshow maker app. It’s one of the most feature-packed and easy-to-use apps of this kind for use on the iPhone and Android.

Like with many of these apps, there’s a free version and a premium version you need to pay a subscription for. The free version has plenty of features for most people (although it has ads and watermarks), and the premium version is reasonably priced.

With it, you can set up video slideshow projects, photo projects, and collages.

It has a very simple, easy-to-use interface with a preview window and an editing timeline. It is very easy to add or remove pictures and videos to or from the timeline just by dragging and dropping.

In the timeline, too, you can trim or reorder clips to suit your needs.

It has a good selection of different canvas settings (aspect ratios) to help you set up your photo slideshow and tailor-make it for different social media platforms. For example, vertical for Tik-Tok, square format for Instagram, and so on.

See the video below, which shows how you can make a slideshow using Inshot:

Inshot makes it simple to add effects (these are basically filters) and transitions to your slideshow, as they have a good library of these.

You can also add stickers and text to your photo slideshow, and these are added as layers so they’re easy to edit afterwards.

The app also contains more advanced features like adding video within video, but those are only available to Premium users.

As for its audio capabilities, you can extract the audio directly from your video, but it’s also easy to add other audio as necessary.

Inshot has a huge music library of its own, but you can also import tracks from your iTunes library or use your phone to record a voiceover if you want that to be your audio track.

Once the audio track is in place, you can manipulate it to fit your visuals, for example, to fade in and fade out.

It’s easy to export your finished content to a variety of resolutions and speeds, up to a maximum of 4K at 60fps. Once you’ve done that, you can share it to any social media platform straight from the app itself.

  • Best timelapse photography apps

FotoPlay Slideshow Maker (Best Free SlideShow App for Android)

A screenshot of a photo video editor app on a phone.

  • Free photo slideshows
  • Adjustable intensity filters
  • Easy to learn and use
  • Variety of  background music
  • No 4K download

FotoPlay Slideshow Maker is an easy and free-to-use video and photo slideshow maker that has a decent amount of features.

Its interface is simple and easy to learn, plus there are a lot of templates to help you set things up with minimal effort.

If you don’t want templates, you can start with a blank canvas, and it’s easy to import your own photos and videos from your camera roll.

Once you have your content in place, you can customize the photos and videos by adding effects (you can also adjust the intensity of these), and add stickers and frames from the app’s large library of them.

You can also add animations to your photos like pan and zoom or dissolve, which work on the content itself or the transitions.

With the traditional preview window and timeline set up, it’s simple to see what you are creating as you’re creating it, and also easy to make micro-adjustments to the lengths of the clips and the duration of effects and animations.

You can adjust the speed of each clip individually, plus the transitions and music settings.

FotoPlay Slideshow Maker has an audio extractor that lets you scrape the music from any video. You can also import your own music or use the app’s music library to add soundtracks.

Once everything’s ready, you can save your photo slideshow at different aspect ratios for different social media platforms and then download it at a maximum of Full-HD 1080p resolution.

  • Best apps to turn photos into anime

PicPlayPost (Best Free SlideShow App for iPhone Video Clips & Photos)

A screenshot of a video editor on a mobile phone.

  • Supports all media formats
  • Auto slideshow setting
  • Video collage feature
  • Easy to use
  • Lower resolution downloads than other apps

PicPlayPost is a free slideshow maker app for photo and video slideshows and video collages.

The slideshows you create can be up to thirty minutes in duration, and you can set them up according to a range of aspect ratios suitable for different social media. For example, 16:9 for YouTube, 4:3 for Facebook, etc.

If you’re pressed for time or just don’t want to do any work yourself, the app can produce an automated slideshow for you. Just select all the content you want to be added, drag everything in, and PicPlayPost will set up the slideshow for you.

Otherwise, you can do everything manually.

Like the other apps in this guide, it has a simple interface with a preview window and a timeline. So you can move clips around, reorder and trim them, add and delete them, and get everything looking exactly as you want it to.

You can also import GIFs from Giphy and add animated text and stickers to your slideshows, and the app also lets you create live wallpapers.

One interesting feature is that any text you add to a slideshow video can, if you like, be pinned to a moving object, so it can follow it around.

It’s easy to add audio tracks to your photo slideshow, as you can buy music straight from the app.

PicPlayPost also allows you to create slideshow video collages with up to four videos playing simultaneously or sequentially, and you can add your own music and transitions to this.

The slideshow video collage function is not just for videos either. It supports all media formats, including photos, videos, GIFs, and live photos.

Anything you create on PicPlayPost can be shared to social media directly from the app.

You can set up your presentation from scratch or take a template from its vast library of them. Once you have a template set up, you’re not stuck within its starting parameters.

You can get right to work customizing and formatting its colours and layout.

There are also no limits when it comes to the media you can insert into the presentation.

Of course, audio is supported, still images and video, but you can also add animations or even 3D elements either from your own archive or the Microsoft library.

And the way that you can interact with the software is also pretty flexible.

Gone are the days of just dragging and dropping elements in or typing text out.

Of course, you can still do this, but you can now also draw straight onto a slide or convert handwritten notes to text. You can even dictate your presentation’s text with the voice-to-text feature.

As well as the templates I mentioned earlier, you can get a different kind of help with the design of your presentation.

With the Designer and Ideas feature, you can, for example, type in a title for your slideshow, and the software will make image suggestions for you.

And that’s not as smart as it gets, either.

The new Copilot feature will help you write the presentation from prompts you give it, fine-tune your language if you ask it to, and intelligently help you create a narrative arc.

Powerpoint has almost become a robot colleague.

And, if you’re working on a presentation or photo slideshow with flesh and blood colleagues, you can communicate with them within the software, and you can all track one another’s edits.

12 Tips for Making an Entertaining Photo Slideshow

Creating an entertaining photo slideshow is about more than just displaying images in sequence.

Here are some tips to elevate your slideshow and captivate your audience:

  • Storytelling is Key : Arrange your photos in a way that tells a story. Whether it’s chronological, thematic, or based on mood, a narrative flow keeps viewers engaged.
  • Choose Quality Over Quantity : Instead of overwhelming viewers with countless images, select the best ones that truly convey the essence of your story or theme.
  • Use Transitions Wisely : While it’s tempting to use flashy transitions, it’s often the subtle ones that work best. However, occasional dramatic transitions can emphasize key moments.
  • Add Music : A well-chosen soundtrack can elevate the emotional impact of your slideshow. Ensure the background music matches the mood you’re trying to convey.
  • Incorporate Motion : Pan and zoom effects, often referred to as the “Ken Burns effect”, can add dynamism to still photos.
  • Use Captions Sparingly : While it’s okay to provide context, avoid cluttering your slideshow with too much text. Let the images speak for themselves.
  • Vary Photo Durations : Not every photo should have the same screen time. Some images might require a longer view, while others can be fleeting.
  • Include Short Video Clips : If you have relevant video clips, intersperse them with photos. This breaks the monotony and adds a dynamic element.
  • Maintain a Consistent Style : Whether it’s in the choice of transitions, color schemes, or fonts, maintaining consistency gives your slideshow a professional touch.
  • End with a Bang : Conclude with a memorable image or a summary slide that encapsulates the essence of your slideshow.
  • Test on Different Devices : Before presenting, ensure your slideshow looks good on various devices, from laptops to projectors, to ensure the best viewing experience.
  • Engage the Audience : If presenting live, interact with your audience. Share anecdotes, ask questions, or provide additional context verbally.

Remember, the goal of an entertaining slideshow is to evoke emotions, tell a story, and engage the viewer.

All the best photo slideshow apps in this guide have the ability to help you do just this.

FAQs on SlideShow Apps

How do I make a slideshow of pictures?

It’s quite simple to make a photo slideshow these days with all the software and apps out there.

First of all, you need your content, the photos, either some you’ve taken or copyright-free images you’ve found online, and then you just upload them to the software.

Many slideshow apps will automatically make a slideshow for you, but if you want manual control, that’s built-in.

Use the software to move your pictures around, adjust the length they show for, add music, and all that sort of thing.

You can have a complete slideshow ready to share in a matter of minutes.

How do I make a slideshow with music for free?

There are plenty of options for making slideshows with music for free, both with desktop software and slideshow apps for mobile phones.

You can normally add music of your choice from your library or use the app’s library instead.

Free options for desktop computers include PhotoStage, Filmora and iMovie, and free slideshow apps for mobile phones include PicPlayPost and Fotoplay Slideshow Maker.

Bear in mind, too, that most paid slideshow apps for mobile phones have free versions. If you’re just looking to make something simple, and don’t need access to a huge array of, for example, effects and stickers, they might be enough.

How-To Geek

6 ways to create more interactive powerpoint presentations.

Engage your audience with cool, actionable features.

Quick Links

  • Add a QR code
  • Embed Microsoft Forms (Education or Business Only)
  • Embed a Live Web Page
  • Add Links and Menus
  • Add Clickable Images to Give More Info
  • Add a Countdown Timer

We've all been to a presentation where the speaker bores you to death with a mundane PowerPoint presentation. Actually, the speaker could have kept you much more engaged by adding some interactive features to their slideshow. Let's look into some of these options.

1. Add a QR code

Adding a QR code can be particularly useful if you want to direct your audience to an online form, website, or video.

Some websites have in-built ways to create a QR code. For example, on Microsoft Forms , when you click "Collect Responses," you'll see the QR code option via the icon highlighted in the screenshot below. You can either right-click the QR code to copy and paste it into your presentation, or click "Download" to add it to your device gallery to insert the QR code as a picture.

In fact, you can easily add a QR code to take your viewer to any website. On Microsoft Edge, right-click anywhere on a web page where there isn't already a link, and left-click "Create QR Code For This Page."

You can also create QR codes in other browsers, such as Chrome.

You can then copy or download the QR code to use wherever you like in your presentation.

2. Embed Microsoft Forms (Education or Business Only)

If you plan to send your PPT presentation to others—for example, if you're a trainer sending step-by-step instruction presentation, a teacher sending an independent learning task to your students, or a campaigner for your local councilor sending a persuasive PPT to constituents—you might want to embed a quiz, questionnaire, pole, or feedback survey in your presentation.

In PowerPoint, open the "Insert" tab on the ribbon, and in the Forms group, click "Forms". If you cannot see this option, you can add new buttons to the ribbon .

As at April 2024, this feature is only available for those using their work or school account. We're using a Microsoft 365 Personal account in the screenshot below, which is why the Forms icon is grayed out.

Then, a sidebar will appear on the right-hand side of your screen, where you can either choose a form you have already created or opt to craft a new form.

Now, you can share your PPT presentation with others , who can click the fields and submit their responses when they view the presentation.

3. Embed a Live Web Page

You could always screenshot a web page and paste that into your PPT, but that's not a very interactive addition to your presentation. Instead, you can embed a live web page into your PPT so that people with access to your presentation can interact actively with its contents.

To do this, we will need to add an add-in to our PPT account .

Add-ins are not always reliable or secure. Before installing an add-in to your Microsoft account, check that the author is a reputable company, and type the add-in's name into a search engine to read reviews and other users' experiences.

To embed a web page, add the Web Viewer add-in ( this is an add-in created by Microsoft ).

Go to the relevant slide and open the Web Viewer add-in. Then, copy and paste the secure URL into the field box, and remove https:// from the start of the address. In our example, we will add a selector wheel to our slide. Click "Preview" to see a sample of the web page's appearance in your presentation.

This is how ours will look.

When you or someone with access to your presentation views the slideshow, this web page will be live and interactive.

4. Add Links and Menus

As well as moving from one slide to the next through a keyboard action or mouse click, you can create links within your presentation to direct the audience to specific locations.

To create a link, right-click the outline of the clickable object, and click "Link."

In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, click "Place In This Document," choose the landing destination, and click "OK."

What's more, to make it clear that an object is clickable, you can use action buttons. Open the "Insert" tab on the ribbon, click "Shape," and then choose an appropriate action button. Usefully, PPT will automatically prompt you to add a link to these shapes.

You might also want a menu that displays on every slide. Once you have created the menu, add the links using the method outlined above. Then, select all the items, press Ctrl+C (copy), and then use Ctrl+V to paste them in your other slides.

5. Add Clickable Images to Give More Info

Through PowerPoint's animations, you can give your viewer the power to choose what they see and when they see it. This works nicely whether you're planning to send your presentation to others to run through independently or whether you're presenting in front of a group and want your audience to decide which action they want to take.

Start by creating the objects that will be clickable (trigger) and the items that will appear (pop-up).

Then, select all the pop-ups together. When you click "Animations" on the ribbon and choose an appropriate animation for the effect you want to achieve, this will be applied to all objects you have selected.

The next step is to rename the triggers in your presentation. To do this, open the "Home" tab, and in the Editing group, click "Select", and then "Selection Pane."

With the Selection Pane open, select each trigger on your slide individually, and rename them in the Selection Pane, so that they can be easily linked to in the next step.

Finally, go back to the first pop-up. Open the "Animations" tab, and in the Advanced Animation group, click the "Trigger" drop-down arrow. Then, you can set the item to appear when a trigger is clicked in your presentation.

If you want your item to disappear when the trigger is clicked again, select the pop-up, click "Add Animation" in the Advanced Animation group, choose an Exit animation, and follow the same step to link that animation to the trigger button.

6. Add a Countdown Timer

A great way to get your audience to engage with your PPT presentation is to keep them on edge by adding a countdown timer. Whether you're leading a presentation and want to let your audience stop to discuss a topic, or running an online quiz with time-limit questions, having a countdown timer means your audience will keep their eye on your slide throughout.

To do this, you need to animate text boxes or shapes containing your countdown numbers. Choose and format a shape and type the highest number that your countdown clock will need. In our case, we're creating a 10-second timer.

Now, with your shape selected, open the "Animations" tab on the ribbon and click the animation drop-down arrow. Then, in the Exit menu, click "Disappear."

Open the Animation Pane, and click the drop-down arrow next to the animation you've just added. From there, choose "Timing."

Make sure "On Click" is selected in the Start menu, and change the Delay option to "1 second," before clicking "OK."

Then, with this shape still selected, press Ctrl+C (copy), and then Ctrl+V (paste). In the second box, type 9 . With the Animation Pane still open and this second shape selected, click the drop-down arrow and choose "Timing" again. Change the Start option to "After Previous," and make sure the Delay option is 1 second. Then, click "OK."

We can now use this second shape as our template, as when we copy and paste it again, the animations will also duplicate. With this second shape selected, press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, type 8 into the box, and continue to do the same until you get to 0 .

Next, remove the animations from the "0" box, as you don't want this to disappear. To do this, click the shape, and in the Animation Pane drop-down, click "Remove."

You now need to layer them in order. Right-click the box containing number 1, and click "Bring To Front." You will now see that box on the top. Do the same with the other numbers in ascending order.

Finally, you need to align the objects together. Click anywhere on your slide and press Ctrl+A. Then, in the Home tab on the ribbon, click "Arrange." First click "Align Center," and then bring the menu up again, so that you can click "Align Middle."

Press Ctrl+A again to select your timer, and you can then move your timer or copy and paste it elsewhere.

Press F5 to see the presentation in action, and when you get to the slide containing the timer, click anywhere on the slide to see your countdown timer in action!

Now that your PPT presentation is more interactive, make sure you've avoided these eight common presentational mistakes before you present your slides.

Best Android apps in 2024

There are millions of apps on the Google Play Store, but these are the ones we think deserve a spot on your Android phone.

Quick Links

Essential apps, customization apps, audio and video apps, communication apps, productivity apps, reading apps, sports apps.

The Google Play Store has millions of apps and games for you to download and make the most of your Android phone . Of course, not all the apps are worth downloading and installing on your phone, as most of them are duds that don't necessarily add any value to your smartphone experience. If you are new to the world of Android and don't know where to begin, then you've come to the right place. Read on to find a list highlighting the best Android apps across different categories like essential, customization, audio, and video apps, and more.

You'll eventually have your very own list of favorites once you get used to Android and find a footing, but the ones I've mentioned in the collection below will help you get started. I've included a good mix of both new and older yet popular apps in this list, so you get a pretty good mix overall. You'll also find both free and paid apps on the list, so be sure to explore the full list to check out all your options, complete with alternatives. Let's dive in!

Best Android games in 2023

I'll start with some essential apps for improving your Android experience, like VPN apps and password managers . These apps don't exactly fit into a particular category I'll mention later on, but they are very useful and are sure to improve your overall experience of using the phone. From easier file management to allowing you to automate your entire Android experience, these are definitely worth a look.

Solid Explorer

Many Android phones — including Google's Pixel phones — come with a default file explorer these days. But if you want an advanced file explorer that lets you do more than just browse the files on your device, then consider checking out the Solid Explorer. There's a lot to like about this particular file explorer, including its support for FTP, SFPT, WebDav, SMB/CIFS, and even cloud services. Solid Explorer also features Material Design, and it works very well on almost all devices out there. It comes with a 14-day free trial, after which you'll have to pay a one-time fee to use it, but it's worth considering if you happen to be a power user who needs more than just a basic file browser.

If you're looking for a reliable password manager to keep all your passwords in one place, then you might want to check out Bitwarden. It's a no-frills password manager that lets you access all of its core features without paying a fee. This includes some must-have features like a secure password generator and multi-device syncing. Alternatively, you can pay for the Premium tier to access additional features such as a built-in two-factor authenticator, file sharing, and more. The best part of all? It's open-source. Who doesn't love some good old open-source software?

Tasker is one of the most complex applications out there, as it has a bit of a learning curve to it. But once you get a grasp of it, you'll quickly realize that it's one of the most powerful applications that lets you automate a lot of things on your device. It can automate almost every aspect of your smartphone usage and have it work the way you want it to. This will reduce a lot of manual input and repetitive behavior by setting automatic actions to the parameters and conditions you want. It's also a Swiss tool of sorts and serves as a workaround for adding amazing smartphone functionality. If you can think of it, Tasker can probably pull it off. It's a paid app on the Play Store, but you can get it for free with the Google Play Pass.

There are tons of customization apps on the Google Play Store that lets you change everything from your phone's homescreen to app icons. I am highlighting three of the best and most popular customization apps out there.

The Backdrops app is one of the best tools for customizing your smartphone and making it truly yours. It's a wallpaper app that gives you a ton of options to choose from. One of the best things about this particular application is that the wallpapers are curated into different categories, and you can set them directly from the app. Aside from some "premium" collections, the app is free to use so that you can get a variety of high-quality wallpapers. Changing the wallpaper goes a long way in customizing the look of your Android homescreen , and Backdrops is easily one of the best places to find some good options.

Nova Launcher

Nova Launcher is easily one of the oldest and most popular applications on this list. It has gotten better over the years and now comes with a host of features that let you take Android customization to a whole new level. Some noteworthy features of the Nova Launcher include the ability to back up and restore your homescreen setups, and theme icons, customize the app drawer, app dock, and more. Most of the Nova Launcher features are available for free, so you can put on your creative hat and go crazy on the customization without spending any money. Paying a one-time premium fee will get you features like gesture controls, unread count badges for apps, icon swipe actions, and more.

Zedge is yet another application that you may have heard of in the past. It's essentially a place to grab some good notification tones and alarms for your device. If you're one of the few users who still download and customize those aspects of your phone, then Zedge is a good app to check out. The app also offers other elements like wallpapers to theme your device, so I'd say it's a pretty good app with plenty of customization options. Zedge is a free application that lets you pay for some premium features, so be sure to check it out.

There's no shortage of music and video streaming applications on the Google Play Store, but I wanted to highlight some unique options for you to check out. These are my top picks for audio and video apps right now.

Plex is easily one of the top picks in this section, as it's an all-around media center app that lets you stream both video and audio on the go. The app lets you access your Plex server on your Android device, meaning you can carry your library of media files with you everywhere. All you have to do is install a Plex server on your own computer to stream from it when you're on the move. It comes with a ton of other useful features that'll take your streaming experience to a whole new level. You will, however, have to subscribe to Plex Pass or make a one-time purchase to unlock all the Plex features on your Android phone, so keep that in mind.

VLC for Android

VLC is probably the best app for watching downloaded videos that exist in your phone's storage. It's a pretty big deal on a PC, and it's also available for Android with the same feature set. VLC supports playing a wide variety of videos, an endless number of formats (no matter how ancient or non-standard they are), and closed captions (if you have a separate subtitle file). What's more, it's completely free and has no ads to hurt your media experience.

Poweramp is very similar to VLC, except this one is for audio instead of video files. This is one of the best apps for playing music files that are locally stored on your smartphone. It's probably not going to win any awards for UI design, but Poweramp focuses on function over form, and it works as advertised without any issues. It has a powerful audio engine with support for hi-res audio, a handful of music formats, a built-in equalizer, internal 64-bit processing, and a bunch of tweaks, so you can make sure your music sounds the way you want it to sound. You can have Poweramp for a $4.99 one-time purchase, and it's definitely worth it if you prefer sideloading your own music instead of relying on a streaming service.

You're probably familiar with a lot of communication apps like WhatsApp and Telegram, so I wanted to highlight some different options to consider. Check out the recommendations below if you want to try something new to stay in touch with your friends and your loved ones:

Signal is your best bet if you care about both security and privacy. It uses the same encryption protocol as WhatsApp, so you get the same end-to-end encryption you'd get there. Signal, however, is backed by a non-profit foundation instead of a "big tech" company, and they also have a less invasive privacy policy. It's definitely worth a look if that's something you're interested in, although you also have to bear in mind that it has considerably fewer users than Telegram or WhatsApp.

Textra is easily one of Android's best and most reliable texting apps. So if you text a lot, then this is an excellent messaging app to have on your phone. It's highly customizable and comes with a lot of themes to customize. In terms of features, you get chat heads, scheduled messages, the ability to copy part of a message, group messaging, and blacklisting. Textra is considerably better than many other SMS apps shipped by OEMs, so give it a shot in case you're looking to replace the stock SMS app on your phone.

As you probably already know, Discord is slowly becoming a popular player in the social media space. While originally geared towards the gaming community, it has gotten much bigger through 2020 and has started to host communities (called "servers" inside the app) of all kinds. The app is extremely flexible, allowing for voice and video calls similar to Google Meet. You can also create separate channels on the fly or even adds bots to your server to add various functionalities.

While a smartphone can't replace a fully-fledged computer for productivity, there's still a lot you can do on your phone when you're on the move. There are tons of applications out there that'll let you get a lot of things done on your phone, and here are the ones that are worth considering:

Evernote is a powerful note-taking app that'll help you organize your important notes across different platforms. This app lets you save all kinds of notes, including text, images, audio, or even a mix of them, and make them available across multiple platforms. One of the best things about Evernote is that it features optical character recognition, which makes the text in images searchable. This comes in handy if you happen to save a lot of images as your notes and need to copy text from them to your device.

Business Calendar 2 Planner

A good calendar app goes a long way in helping you stay organized, which is why I believe you should consider downloading Business Calendar 2. It's a powerful calendar app that acts as your complete personal organizer, giving you features of a calendar, schedule planner, and task organizer.

Spark is one of the best email apps out there that comes with a lot of awesome features. It can intelligently prioritize your emails, be smart about notifications, and even allow you to collaborate with your team over emails. Some other noteworthy features of this particular email client include intelligent search, quick replies, email scheduling, snoozing emails, and more.

Dedicated e-readers are, for the most part, not necessary anymore for people that like to store digital copies of their books. While dedicated e-readers still have their own set of advantages, you can grab any smartphone or tablet and have a very similar experience to e-readers. It is, however, important to pick the right apps, and I believe the ones mentioned below will help you access all of your content easily and painlessly and discover new books online.

Amazon Kindle

Kindle was formerly just a lineup of e-readers from Amazon, but there's now a Kindle app for Android devices that gives you the same functionality without having an e-reader. This app gives you access to Amazon's extensive library of books, comics, newspapers, and magazines and allows you to read what you want at any given moment easily. Some of them also have Audible narration if you're more into hearing than reading, and you can explore several genres, new releases, and more within the app.

If you prefer sideloading e-books to your phone manually instead of relying on a service like Kindle, then you might want to check out Lithium. This app will let you read the e-books that are locally stored on your phone. It's built based on Material Design guidelines and allows you to read e-books saved on EPUB files. It automatically detects which e-book you're reading, allows you to highlight, add notes to books, change to night/sepia themes for easier reading, and more. It's free of ads, which is great for an uninterrupted reading experience. You can also choose to pay a one-time fee to purchase the Pro version of the app and get some additional functionalities, custom themes, more highlight colors, etc.

Feedly is a bit different from other recommendations in this category. It won't let you read e-books, but it allows you to follow news websites and blogs to read in one place. It curates articles from various online sources; you don't have to download and install multiple news apps on your device. Feedly is simple to use and is available to download for free from the Google Play Store.

It's easy to fire up the Google app or ask Google Assistant for the latest sports updates. It's a pretty good way to get all the latest scores and updates about the sports you follow, but what if you need more details or something that gives you a detailed breakdown of the scores? That's exactly why you need a dedicated sports app that sends real-time updates with a more comprehensive look at the scores and statistics.

theScore aims to be an all-in-one hub for everything sports. It allows you to read news from various sports, such as football, soccer, basketball, and more. You can even use it to follow the major leagues and competitions such as the NFL, the NBA, the Premier League, La Liga, and UEFA Champions League, as well as a handful of others from different sports. theScore app gives you live coverage of games, complete with scores updated in real-time and stats throughout the game. It also gives you a curated feed based on your preferences and even allows chatting within the app.

The ESPN app gives you similar functionality to theScore app as an all-in-one hub for sports stuff. It allows you to read up on the news from a variety of different sports and leagues and gives you live coverage of sports matches. It's also from a more reputable sports outlet, and if you're an ESPN+ subscriber, you can watch live sports coverage and ESPN+ originals without cable or TV right from your smartphone.

CBS Sports, as the name suggests, is made by the CBS group, and the app allows you to keep track of your favorite sports and teams. You can watch some of your favorite games on CBS Sports, including the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, the NFL, and mixed martial arts tournaments. CBS All Access subscribers will be able to watch a variety of exclusives, as well as all major sporting events.

Finally, the NFL app is a must-have for football fans. This app is packed with a lot of features, including live local/primetime games as well as live Playoffs and the Super Bowl. It allows you to watch videos, highlights, and replays of every game, and it keeps football fans in the loop even throughout the off-season with news, highlights, stats, and more. If you only care exclusively about football and do not give as much thought to other sports, then this might be better than the other two options mentioned above. You can also stream on-demand videos through a Chromecast, although you cannot stream live games due to license restrictions. But there are plenty of other things to like about it, so be sure to check it out.

Lots of great apps to check out on Android

It's tough to pick the single best application out of all the options mentioned on the list. The essential apps are an absolute no-brainer, and the ones like Solid Explorer and Tasker help improve the overall experience whether you have one of the best phones , like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra , or a solid budget phone like the Pixel 7a . Having a good file explorer on your phone with support for things like FTP, SFPT, WebDav, SMB/CIFS will go a long way in helping you access a bunch of different files right from your phone.

Similarly, password Managers like Bitwarden are also important to have if you have a ton of online accounts on your phone. I skipped the usual suspects like WhatsApp, Netflix, and others in favor of highlighting some unique applications under different categories to help you get a well-rounded experience on your phone, so be sure to check them out if you're looking for more suggestions.

I tried GPT-4o and it's a gamechanger for free ChatGPT users

Published on May 15, 2024

gpt 4o introduction stock

We’ve known that OpenAI is actively developing its next-gen GPT-5 language model for some time now. But earlier this week, the company surprised us with an incremental update to GPT-4 Turbo . Dubbed GPT-4o, the new model is a massive update that brings real-time voice interaction, video capabilities, and faster and more accurate responses. But flashy demos aside, GPT-4o also marks the first biggest update for free ChatGPT users in well over a year. Here’s why it’s such a big deal.

What is ChatGPT-4o?

OpenAI on website on smartphone stock photo (1)

ChatGPT-4o or GPT-4o is OpenAI’s latest and most advanced language model that can reason across audio, video, and text in real-time. The model can respond to audio inputs within an average of just 320 milliseconds, about as fast as human response time, making it capable of natural conversation.

Last year, I wrote about ChatGPT’s voice conversation feature and how it already mimicked a real-life conversation almost perfectly. GPT-4o elevates that experience even further. While the previous feature used different models for speech recognition and response generation, GPT-4o has been trained to handle the whole process from end-to-end. Armed with the capabilities of a large language model like GPT-4, OpenAI says that the AI can even detect emotion in voices.

GPT-4o’s improved voice capability would be a big deal on its own, but that’s not the only new feature OpenAI showed off. The new language model also offers significantly faster responses, thanks to a new tokenizer. In non-English languages, and especially ones that don’t use the Latin alphabet, OpenAI says the new model will feel twice as fast as the previous GPT-4 Turbo model.

The bombshell announcement of the event was that GPT-4o is coming to all ChatGPT users. That’s right — you can access the latest and most capable version of the chatbot for free, no ChatGPT Plus subscription necessary. This marks the first-ever accuracy and speed update for free users since the chatbot’s release all the way back in late 2022.

The good news for free users doesn’t end there. Since GPT-4o is an extension of OpenAI’s GPT-4 language model, it’s also capable of searching the internet and fact-checking its responses. Until now, free users were stuck with the GPT-3.5 model that was significantly less intelligent and had a knowledge cut-off of January 2022.

GPT-4o in action: How to use it

If you haven’t logged into ChatGPT in a while, now’s the time to change that. OpenAI says that it’s opening up access to GPT-4o to all users in waves, effective immediately. I’ve been using Microsoft Copilot for about a year as it offers free access to GPT-4 and, consequently, rarely ever used ChatGPT in that time. Still, I was greeted with access to GPT-4o in a “limited capacity” as soon as I logged in.

It’s worth noting that GPT-4o’s voice conversations feature isn’t available yet. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that it will begin rolling out in the coming weeks. Voice conversations will also be exclusively available to ChatGPT Plus users, at least for the foreseeable future.

With that disclaimer out of the way, GPT-4o is still an impressive update in its own right — especially for non-paying users. Type in a prompt and you’ll notice that the model responds impressively quickly in comparison to GPT-4. However, it may not necessarily be as fast as the legacy GPT-3.5 model which has been relentlessly fine-tuned and optimized since its initial release four years ago.

Testing GPT-4o: Is it really more accurate?

Speed aside, GPT-4o’s big highlight is that it delivers significantly more accurate responses. And unlike GPT-3.5, it doesn’t have a hard knowledge cutoff date either. This means you can finally ask the chatbot factual questions without having to worry about it hallucinating or spitting out false responses. Just how much of an upgrade is GPT-4o? Quite a big one in my testing. Here’s a side-by-side comparison where I ask both GPT-3.5 and GPT-4o a simple factual question:

gpt 4o factual question

As you can see from this relatively simple example, both language models deliver the correct response. However, GPT-4o was significantly more confident in its response and provided a detailed answer. The older GPT-3.5 model (which was the only model available to free ChatGPT users until now) responded from memory instead, which explains why it asked us to verify the information with an official source.

Interestingly, I could not switch from GPT-4o to GPT-3.5 for this particular question as the option was grayed out with the message “This model doesn’t support using tools”. So if you ask ChatGPT a factual question, it will now automatically browse the internet and use the latest model. Here’s another example where I asked ChatGPT which chip the Galaxy S24 Ultra contains, with the condition that I’ll be buying it in the UK.

chatgpt 4o factual question 2

Thanks to GPT-4o’s ability to search the internet, it correctly said that the S24 Ultra comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 worldwide. It even clarified that the regular and Plus S24 variants will come with the Exynos 2400 in Europe. I’ve asked other chatbots the same question in the past only to get a confident-sounding but inaccurate response. Just look at the response from GPT-3.5 above.

While we’re still a few weeks away from experiencing the full potential of GPT-4o, namely its voice capabilities, the baseline experience is still impressive in its own right. Better yet, it’s universally accessible to everyone for free. So if you’ve been using Microsoft Copilot or Google Gemini instead of ChatGPT, now might be the time to switch back.
