The Twenty-first century is becoming disruptive in many ways; the natural and the man-made world is changing rapidly. Over the past decade, both governmental and business leaders have struggled to earn the trust, commitment and support of followers and society at large, and business “ethics” has repeatedly been labeled an “oxymoron.” Leaders may influence their followers using questionable tactics that can be unethical and pursue goals that are not right, not for shareholders, employees, customers, communities, nor for themselves. Therefore, the aim of a leader must be to engage in leadership practices that are not only effective but also ethical and moral. In this chapter, we highlight that without ethics, moral character, ability to listen with the intent to understand and empathize with others, trust, and the ability to assess the consequences that lead to a greater good, leadership becomes ineffective. In that regard, servant leadership offers a unique perspective and a solution to shift our current thinking and converge our worldview into a universal value system that can serve humanity and the natural world. Servant leadership qualifies as a holistic leadership approach which focuses on stakeholder development in rational, relational, ethical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions.

QUEST JOURNALS

With a view to ascertain conceptualisations of servant leadership being used in empirical studies and to find if "servant leadership" has been defined in same terms by researchers across the papers, we reviewed a small sample of empirical studies searched on Google Scholar. Further, we tried to ascertain if servant leadership has a direct impact on desirable behavioural and attitudinal outcomes in the organisational context or it works through mediators. We found that there are similarities and dissimilarities over what comprises servant leadershipand Scholars have operationalised in their empirical studies the servant leadership comprising of dimensions which are varied in different studies. However, there are commonalities as well. One such commonality as that servant leadership is characterised by interest of followers being given priority over other interests.

Servant Leadership Vs. Followership: Compare and Contrast Essay Example

In this essay, I will define, compare, and contrast followership and servant leadership. Followership and servant leadership are like two sides of the same coin. They exist separately but share plenty of attributes from the Army’s Leadership Requirements Model. 

The phrase ‘servant leadership’ is credited to Robert K. Greenleaf. It is a form of leadership where the leader places the needs and wellbeing of his/her subordinates first. In Greenleaf’s words, “The servant leader is servant first …” Alternatively, followership is the active pursuit of a leader’s goal for the organization by a follower. However, both terminologies have similarities.

For instance, trust and respect. Servant leaders need to trust and respect their followers’ methods and will to accomplish tasks assigned to them. Trust comes from understanding team dynamics and building personal relationships with their subordinates. On the same token, effective followers need to trust and respect their leader’s guidance when tackling the organization’s missions. Furthermore, both positions need to employ critical thinking and confidence when going about their tasks. Confidence in their decisions and actions is a result of critical thinking. This displays competence to the rest of the team members and further strengthens the cohesiveness of the team. These are just but a few of the similarities.

The main difference between servant leadership and followership lies in the tasks and level of accountability for each position. Servant leaders are leaders still. Meaning they must maintain individual and team accountability. They focus on current tasks and future missions for the organization. Whereas in followership, followers focus individual accountability and current tasks. Followership holds less responsibility.

In conclusion, we can see that servant leadership and followership have minor differences but a lot of similarities. In fact, both are subject to the Army’s Leadership Requirement’s Model. Be, know, and do.

What is 'Servant Leadership'?

In coaching military veterans, the term “servant leadership” comes up frequently. Some tell me, “I want to serve others, beyond my time in the military,” or, “As a leader, I believe it is my duty to look out for the needs of others more than my own.”

“Servant Leadership” is also a commonly used term in corporate training and professional development programs. Is the military definition of servant leadership the same understanding as the private sector interpretation?

What is Servant Leadership? Traditionally, leadership is understood as the power of one individual who controls, manipulates or directs others as organized by a hierarchy. The Wikipedia definition of servant leadership as that of a mindset or philosophy: “… the servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. Servant leadership turns the power pyramid upside down; instead of the people working to serve the leader, the leader exists to serve the people. When leaders shift their mindset and serve first, they unlock purpose and ingenuity in those around them, resulting in higher performance and engaged, fulfilled employees.”

In the business world, servant leaders are known to be those individuals who put the team first, who collaborate, mentor, and give of themselves for the pure and unselfish betterment of others. They are often regarded as selfless, humble, and generous. Many of our high-profile corporate leaders are assigned the value of “having a servant’s heart.” While they might seek growth, fame, attention, and access, they do so because it empowers them to help others, not themselves.

Military Servant Leadership is Valuable for the Private Sector In a 2009 Harvard Business Review article, the author highlights unique aspects of military service that align with that of a servant mentality: “military leadership is based on a concept of duty, service, and self-sacrifice; we take an oath to that effect.” He goes on to advise corporate leaders to recognize and place high value on the military culture’s training towards generosity and self-sacrifice, “Tie selflessness with the adaptive capacity, innovation, and flexibility demanded by dangerous contexts, and one can see the value of military leadership as a model for leaders in the private sector.”

The civilian workplace is certainly filled with competition, threats, challenges and competing personal agendas. It is also packed with leaders who care, empathize with, and serve their constituents and followers wholeheartedly. Before assuming that you leave your servants heart at the door when you take of your military uniform, learn more about a potential employer’s values and track record for team building, leadership, collaboration and their desire to serve their employees, customers and community.

Are You a Servant Leader? If the understanding of servant leadership presented here feels consistent with your beliefs around how we should live, work and interact with others, then you likely have a servant leader’s heart.
