Introduction: Renewable Energy Windmill Project Science Fair/Stem Project

Renewable Energy Windmill Project Science Fair/Stem Project

I made a small windmill to teach about renewable energy, and how easy it is to make it. This project is made in such a way that almost anyone with basic tools should be able to make it. Also, no welding is required!

Supplies

mini generator https://www.amazon.com/CrocSee-Brushless-Generator-Experiment-Teaching/dp/B0722Z4PX5/ref=sr_1_9?crid=1F9WRHNC74177&keywords=small+science+generator+kit&qid=1705525298&sprefix=smallscience+generator+kit%2Caps%2C126&sr=8-9

Thin aluminum sheet (1'x1'x1-1.5mm)

28 teeth pinion gear https://www.amazon.com/TEAM-LOSI-RACING-Aluminum-TLR332026/dp/B00AXJBBNS/ref=sr_1_50?crid=2BL52A1BR72QW&keywords=pinion+gear+30+48+tlr&qid=1705542645&sprefix=pinion+gear+30+48+tlr%2Caps%2C131&sr=8-50

old 2"x4" piece

Step 1: Mark the First Steps on the Metal

Mark the First Steps on the Metal

Take the aluminum sheet, find and mark the center, and using a compass, or any tool you like, make the biggest circle possible. You will also want to make a circle with about a 1.5-inch radius at the center of the metal circle.

(For best results use a Sharpie or another permanent marking method.)

Step 2: Cut Aluminum Sheet Into Circle

Cut Aluminum Sheet Into Circle

Use whatever tools you have at hand, and also get creative! I used a wooden 4"x4" scrap, and put a nail through the center of the aluminum. Then I secured it to the bench and used a tool to remove material while rotating the metal. It is important to note that nothing about this project has to be perfect as long as the weight distribution is similar on both sides, the windmill should work.

This step should be the hardest and most time-consuming step in the process.

Always use tools for their intended purpose and wear proper safety gear when using any power tools. Also beware of air circulation and the sharp edges many cutting methods create.

Step 3: Flattening & Marking

Flattening & Marking

You may notice a warping to the metal after cutting, which is normal considering you just heated the outside of a circular shape, causing it to expand and contract, while the inside did not. Although flattening is not strictly necessary, it makes marking much easier. You can use a combination of a hammer, malate, and vise to get it flattened out. it will never be perfect, so once it is good enough just move on.

The marking is simple. Use a wood/metalworking square, and draw a line across the entire circle that intersects with the hole/mark in the metal. Next, use the right angle on your square to make a line at a right angle to the first one that also intersects with the middle point. Extend that line to both sides of the circle. After you are satisfied with these lines, use the 45-degree angle on the square to make a line that cuts two of the sections in half. After that is done, simply do it to the last two larger sections, and you are done with this step!

Step 4: Cutting Fan Blades

Cutting Fan Blades

Cut along the lines you made in the last step with a tool of your choice. I found that an angle grinder with a cut-off wheel was the best. Do not cut all the way through. Instead, cut only to the circle that is about 1.5 inches in radius from the center point. Make sure to have the windmill clamped down well for this step.

Step 5: Bending

Using your hands, bend each blade into roughly the same position at a slight angle so that as wind blows on it, the fan moves. Each blade will have a slight curve to it and will naturally not be perfect. As you can see in the picture above, my windmill has a slight curve into the wind also, which I think greatly affects the performance. You will most likely find that this curve comes naturally as you bend the metal.

Step 6: Drilling & Fitting

Drilling & Fitting

You must now drill a hole in the middle that is big enough for the top of the pinion gear to fit through. You do not want the actual gear part, however, to slip through because where the gear gets wider is where you will put the JB weld.

After you drill the hole, try to sand/file down the back so that the aluminum fan fits flat on the gear. Remember that you want the concave side facing the wind like a cup, so it is the convex side that should be up against the gear. I also roughed up the gear for better bonding.

Step 7: Finishing Steps

Finishing Steps

Now you can attach the pinion gear to the generator and attach the fan to that, using JB weld. After this, read and follow the directions on the JB weld. Be sure to mix the JB weld extremely thoroughly for the best results. I let mine dry for about 18 hours, which seemed like a perfect amount of time.

Step 8: LED Output

Plug LED into two outputs from the mini generator to create a simple circuit which will give you a vague idea of the electrical output.

Step 9: Finished Windmill Images

Finished Windmill Images

Step 10: Facts for Science Fair

This project is a great example of harnessing renewable energy sources. This one harnesses the wind currents, which is ultimately caused by the sun warming the air which makes the hot air rise and the cold air fall. It might seem like this is making energy out of thin air and although it is, (get it?) it is not actually MAKING the energy.

As the sun is burning, it turns its chemical potential energy into thermal energy, which then heats the air, making wind kinetic energy, which is then transformed into mechanical energy in the form of the blades turning. The generator then turns that into electrical energy.

The most notable simple machine in this project is the axle that is used to transfer rotation over a distance without converting it into linear motion. As the magnets around the outside of the generator turn, it creates an electromagnetic field, and through electromagnetic induction, this is made into an electromagnetic current that we can use in our everyday lives. This can be wired as either a series or parallel circuit; I wired it as a series.

Ohm's law states that voltage is equal to current x resistance [V=IR], so if the goal were to get more voltage, either the resistance of the wires could be lowered, or the generator could simply be spun faster, resulting in more current, and thus more voltage.

Step 11: Troubleshooting

  • One common problem is that metal shavings/dust will get drawn into the generator because of the magnets. If you feel a grinding as you try to turn the generator, this is most likely the problem. I recommend using compressed air to blow out the obstructions.
  • If you have an easy time getting the generator to turn initially, but the speed does not increase, it might be because the blades are at too steep of an angle. If this is the case, I recommend bending the blades back incrementally towards being flatter.
  • If you follow the above steps and it is still not working, it might simply not be windy enough. The higher up on a hill without trees you go, the better. You could also just wait for a windier day!

Renewable energy has been on an increasing demand in the recent due to over stress on non-renewable resources and their increasing cost. Thus producing electricity with the use of renewable resource Wind energy has been taken up in this project. A Windmill, which rotates when there is enough wind, generates electricity owing to magnetic coupling between the rotating and stationary coil. A horizontally rotating prototype of Windmill is being used in this project. Mini Windmill Power Generation Project harnesses the Windmill i.e, Wind Turbine Generator to charge a 12V Battery. The System is based on Atmega328 microcontroller which smartly senses and charges the battery while displaying the voltage on the LCD. The Windmill, when in enough wind to drive it, generates power enough to charge a battery. Since it can work in favorable natural conditions by itself without consuming fossil fuel, it can charge the battery automatically and that too without any harmful emissions. Thus this project is an example how natural resources like the wind energy can be efficiently harnessed to produce electricity in harmony with nature.

Six bidders win feasibility licences for Australia's first offshore wind farm zone off Gippsland

Chris Bowen in a navy suit and tie in front of the australian flag at a press conference

Australia's first offshore wind zone is a step closer to becoming a reality after the federal government confirmed the first proponents to receive feasibility licences.

High Sea Wind, Gippsland Skies, Blue Mackerel North, Kut-Wut Brataualung, Ørsted Offshore Australia 1, and Star of the South Wind Farm have all been chosen to proceed after submitting applications last year.

A map of Victoria's east coast which is marked up with 12 separate locations where wind turbines could be built.

The feasibility licences allow developers to undertake detailed environmental assessments, geotechnical surveys, obtain approvals and undertake further consultation on their proposed projects.

The announcement is set to be made during an address by federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen at the Energy Users of Australia Association annual conference in Melbourne on Wednesday morning.

In the speech, obtained in advance by the ABC, Mr Bowen will say the market response to the development of Australia's first offshore wind zone was "huge" and "massively oversubscribed".

A total of 37 applications were received for the 15,000 square kilometre zone off Gippsland, in Victoria's east.

"We wanted 600 megawatts of new dispatchable capacity. We received bids for 19,000 megawatts — 32 times more than what we asked for," Mr Bowen will say.

"AEMO [Australian Energy Market Operator] Services has shortlisted projects in what is clearly a very competitive environment."

Additional projects asked to review proposals

The government said it also intended to grant a further six licences to Iberdrola Australia OW 2 (for its Aurora Green wind farm), Greater Gippsland 2 OWP Project (Gippsland Dawn), Navigator North Project, Ørsted Offshore Australia 1 (Gippsland 02), Kent Offshore Wind, and Great Eastern Offshore Wind Farm Project Co.

An impression of large white wind turbines in the ocean

These additional proponents have been asked to revise and resubmit their applications to remove any overlap with other projects.

Meanwhile, a decision has been made not to grant feasibility licences to the remaining 25 applicants.

Floatation Energy's Seadragon offshore wind project was one of the 25 not to be awarded a feasibility license.

This was despite the project being awarded Major Project Status by the federal government last year.

The company's manager and executive director Carolyn Sanders said she was "surprised" and "extremely disappointed" by the decision.

Gippsland community to have major voice

Mr Bowen first declared the area off Gippsland as a suitable location for renewable wind energy in December 2022.

Man in highvis talking into a microphone

Feasibility licence applications were accepted for proposed projects within the declared area from January 23 to April 27 in 2023.

The site stretches across nearly 15,000 square kilometres offshore from Lakes Entrance in the east, to south of Wilsons Promontory in the west.

Mr Bowen will tell attendees at Wednesday's conference that he remains committed to ensuring locals are involved in the decision-making process as development progresses.

"Crucially, the Gippsland community will have several further opportunities to have their say before any construction [of wind turbines] commences," his speech reads.

"That includes when proponents develop management plans, seek approvals, and apply for commercial licences … and we'll listen to that feedback."

It was confirmed on August 31 last year that the region west of Wilsons Promontory would not be considered for future offshore wind projects due to environmental concerns.

Mr Bowen's speech says it is a clear example of the government listening to impacted residents.

"I reduced the draft zone substantially, following consultation."

Approval 'some time away'

If the shortlisted projects proceed, they have the potential to generate up to 25 gigawatts of power a year, which is more electricity than the entire state of Victoria generated in 2023.

"Even just some of that potential will make a substantial contribution to filling the gap left by coal in Victoria," Mr Bowen will say.

Additionally, it is estimated the projects may create more than 15,000 jobs during construction and another 7,500 ongoing positions once the turbines are operational.

An artists' impression of wind turbines in the ocean from a distance.

Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D'Ambrosio said the projects were key to meeting the state's renewable energy target of 2 gigawatts of offshore wind energy generation by 2032.

"We're proud to be paving the way for the country's first offshore wind farms," Ms D'Ambrosio said.

"These offshore wind projects will also support thousands of jobs in Gippsland and across the supply chain."

But there is still a long way to go.

Only once feasibility is proven will developers be able to apply for a commercial licence.

From there, they will be given final approval to build an offshore wind project and generate electricity commercially.

Vineyard Offshore's CEO shared new details on Vineyard Wind 2 during a New Bedford visit.

presentation on windmill project

NEW BEDFORD — If the offshore wind industry takes off like proponents hope, and if New Bedford becomes a key location within it like many believe it will, the nature of competition between different entities taking up residence in the Whaling City and throughout the region might take on a more collaborative tone than some industries.

This was one of the topics discussed at the Foss Marine Terminal in New Bedford on Monday, when Vineyard Offshore CEO Alicia Barton came by to see the site that will become the company's operations and maintenance (O&M) base, should government officials select Vineyard Offshore's bid for the 1,200-megawatt Vineyard Wind 2 project.

"This is, I think in a lot of ways, a glimpse of the future that's really underway today," Barton said, noting the work on the Vineyard Wind 1 project already in progress just down the street at the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal. As explained by Vineyard Offshore Director of Communications Andrew Doba, Vineyard Wind — the entity behind the Vineyard Wind 1 project — is a joint venture between Avangrid Renewables and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP); Vineyard Offshore is CIP's offshore development entity.

Barton noted it was her first time seeing the site in person.

According to Barton, if the Vineyard Wind 2 bid is selected, start of construction would be aimed for "around 2029" with project completion expected by 2031. The project would bring 40-50 "long-term jobs" to New Bedford, Barton said.

"...that would be a long-term commitment of 25 years or more of good-paying jobs here to support the operations of our facility...," she said.

Be in-the-know: Who made New Bedford's top 10 taxpayers' list in 2023. Who won't be on list in 2024.

"People who will be doing ... these jobs are sitting in middle school today, but by the time we are fully operational we expect people to be able to have careers here at this facility for their entire working life," said Foss Offshore Wind President Joel Whitman.

Foss Offshore Wind is the entity created to operate the Foss terminal, which will be used as a base for ships to transport equipment, materials and workers to and from wind farm construction sites, Whitman and others explained.

Great progress expected for Foss over coming months

According to Foss Marine Terminal President Andrew Saunders, "10% of the facility is running right now from an operational point of view, 90% is under construction."

"But this summer you'll probably have ... 50% operational and 50% still under construction," Saunders said, noting the deep water berthing area needed for intake of large ships should be ready "probably in June."

What if Vineyard Offshore's bid isn't picked?

While those in attendance at Foss on Monday acknowledged that Vineyard Offshore's Vineyard Wind 2 bid is not guaranteed to come to fruition, it's not the be-all/end-all for the Foss Marine Terminal's development project into an offshore wind industry support. According to Saunders, the site will be able to house "up to three, if not four" tenants.

While Whitman said he wouldn't be "naming names" of other bidders Foss has been in discussions with, he said the company has had conversations with "all the developers who have submitted" bids for New England's next wind farm project.

According to past Gannett reporting, proposals submitted by deadline last month were from Ørsted, Vineyard Offshore, Avangrid and SouthCoast Wind.

Keep up with local: New Bedford officials battle over annual raise to retirees. Here's how much it is a month.

"One of the goals of this site is to be able to offset the cost of developers setting up their O&M infrastructure," Whitman said "So one of the ways to do that is to design a facility here where we can have multiple operators at the same location, share the infrastructure, share the berthing facilities, and all the things you saw today."

According to Whitman, Foss currently does have some involvement with the Vineyard Wind 1 wind farm being developed at the nearby Marine Commerce Terminal by way of supplying some tugboats and barges for use in the project.

While multiple versions of plans for Vineyard Wind 2 exist to suit multi-state collaborative or individualized options for Mass., Rhode Island and Connecticut, Barton said all those scenarios would entail Foss as the O&M base.

Doba said it is not known when officials' decision on the offshore wind project proposals before them will come, but it is expected sometime over the summer.

What's special about the Foss Marine Terminal?

Whitman said the Foss terminal is a rare jewel for an industry with limited options in terms of prospective O&M base locations.

"These days it's very rare because all the frontage in New England has been taken up for 300 years," Whitman told The Standard-Times.

What makes Foss ideal, Whitman said, are its specific location along New Bedford Harbor, plus the size and shape of its ship berthing zone.

"If you're an operator of an O&M vessel, you want to be able to come in, get your business taken care of ... turn right around and go back out, so we're really excited because this location allows us to do that," Whitman said, noting New Bedford is the closest option for a port in proximity to the proposed Vineyard Wind 2 site, about 29 miles south of Nantucket. "And because we have the hurricane barrier, when you come into New Bedford, we're the nearest berth at the mouth of the harbor."

Stay up-to-date: NBPD have made in arrest in connection with a Monday shooting in the West End.

Foss just the beginning

Whether or not Vineyard Offshore's Vineyard Wind 2 project is picked by officials to move forward, Foss Offshore has its sights set on growth, Whitman said, noting Foss Offshore is owned by a company called Saltchuk, which he called the largest operator of Jones Act-compliant transport vessels in the world.

"This is [Saltchuk's] only recent investment in the East Coast," he said. "So we're developing this port here and over time we're looking to develop similar capabilities up and down both coasts."

Collaboration will be key

Whitman said he sees New England's involvement in the offshore wind industry as suited to a collaborative, regional approach, which a multi-tenant facility like Foss, and a city like New Bedford, would be conducive to.

"So as a New Englander, I think regional is absolutely the way to go," Whitman said. "Also, remember ... no one has a couple hundred acres that they can just bring ... so it's not really, in our opinion, a case of one small port competing with another small port, Salem competing with New Bedford or something.

"If you want to build the volume of offshore wind that Massachusetts, Southern New England, or New England in general wants to do, we all need to work together...."

Seeking public comment for Sweet Acres Wind Project Habitat Conservation Plan

Wind turbines in northwest Indiana

We at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are seeking public comment on a draft habitat conservation plan and environmental assessment for the Sweet Acres Wind Project in White County, Indiana. The draft plan accompanies an Endangered Species Act permit application by Indiana Crossroads Wind Farm II LLC for limited, unintentional take of two endangered species, the Indiana bat and northern long-eared bat, and two species under federal review, the tricolored bat and the little brown bat. Unintentional take includes harming, harassing and killing.

The draft habitat conservation plan outlines measures the company would take for conserving bat species if our agency approves the requested permit. These measures include contributing to efforts to protect bat habitat and changes to wind turbine operation to reduce risk of collisions with bats.

“Habitat conservation plans are a flexibility provided by the Endangered Species Act to allow actions that unintentionally affect endangered and threated species if steps are taken to offset those impacts,” said Lori Nordstrom, assistant regional director for Ecological Services in the Midwest Region. “Habitat conservation plans outline steps that facilities will take to avoid and reduce risks to bats and to lessen the impacts of incidental take of these bat species.”

Habitat conservation plans are agreements between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a landowner, private company or non-federal agency that allows that individual or organization to undertake otherwise lawful activities on their property that may result in the incidental take of a federally endangered or threatened species.

If approved, the Sweet Acres Wind Project Habitat Conservation Plan would address incidental take that results from operating the company’s 42 wind turbines in White County, Indiana for six years. The permit would authorize incidental take of up to 18 Indiana bats, two northern long-eared bats, 18 tricolored bats and 18 little brown bats over the life of the permit.

Review draft documents and submit public comments by searching the Federal Register for Docket Number FWS–R3–ES–2023–0248 . Please specify whether your comment addresses the draft habitat conservation plan, draft environmental action statement or any combination of these or other supporting documents. The public comment period will be open for 30 days through Friday, May 31, 2024.

  12. Energy Is Blowing in the Wind

The graph shows that the power the generator is able to produce increases by the cube of the wind speed (see Equation 1, below). To cube a number means to multiply the number by itself twice. For example, two cubed (written mathematically as 2 3) is 2 3 = 2×2×2 = 8. Therefore, a small increase in wind speed results in a large increase in the power that the wind generator can produce.
