A few adjustments can get your application noticed.

Whether applying for a summer internship, a professional development opportunity, such as a Fulbright, an executive MBA program, or a senior leadership development course, a personal statement threads the ideas of your CV, and is longer and has a different tone and purpose than a traditional cover letter. A few adjustments to your personal statement can get your application noticed by the reviewer.

  • Make sure you’re writing what they want to hear. Most organizations that offer a fellowship or internship are using the experience as a pipeline: It’s smart to spend 10 weeks and $15,000 on someone before committing five years and $300,000. Rarely are the organizations being charitable or altruistic, so align your stated goals with theirs
  • Know when to bury the lead, and when to get to the point. It’s hard to paint a picture and explain your motivations in 200 words, but if you have two pages, give the reader a story arc or ease into your point by setting the scene.
  • Recognize that the reviewer will be reading your statement subjectively, meaning you’re being assessed on unknowable criteria. Most people on evaluation committees are reading for whether or not you’re interesting. Stated differently, do they want to go out to dinner with you to hear more? Write it so that the person reading it wants to hear more.
  • Address the elephant in the room (if there is one). Maybe your grades weren’t great in core courses, or perhaps you’ve never worked in the field you’re applying to. Make sure to address the deficiency rather than hoping the reader ignores it because they won’t. A few sentences suffice. Deficiencies do not need to be the cornerstone of the application.

At multiple points in your life, you will need to take action to transition from where you are to where you want to be. This process is layered and time-consuming, and getting yourself to stand out among the masses is an arduous but not impossible task. Having a polished resume that explains what you’ve done is the common first step. But, when an application asks for it, a personal statement can add color and depth to your list of accomplishments. It moves you from a one-dimensional indistinguishable candidate to someone with drive, interest, and nuance.

When writing a personal statement for a postgraduate course in business management you should:

  • Clearly articulate why you are interested in pursuing a postgraduate qualification in business management. Discuss your motivation, passion, and the specific aspects of business management which intrigue you.
  • Outline your career aspirations and explain how studying business management aligns with your professional goals. Discuss the specific roles or industries you aim to enter after completing the programme, and how gaining the qualification will help with this ambition.
  • Demonstrate that you have researched the programme and institution thoroughly. Highlight specific modules, practical elements and/or academics that attract you to this course. Explain how it aligns with your academic and career objectives.
  • Highlight how your previous studies have equipped you with a solid foundation for further study. Discuss specific modules, projects, research such as your dissertation or academic achievements which are relevant.
  • Mention work experience or extracurricular activities which will make you successful when studying at postgraduate level, and the transferable skills you have gained through part-time work, internships, participation in clubs and societies.
  • Conclude by summarising the key points of your personal statement and reiterating your enthusiasm for the programme. Connect your past experiences, academic achievements, and future goals in a cohesive manner.

Sample statement.

I have long been a dedicated student of the processes of business and finance. Both their  intricacies and their central place within the structure of our society have offered rewarding  avenues for potential intellectual exploration, alongside challenging opportunities for practical  application. It is this combination that has inspired me throughout school, work experience  and into undergraduate study and that will continue to ensure that I strive to achieve similar  results in future study and beyond.

From a young age I have demonstrated not only an interest in but also an aptitude for subject areas applicable to the study of business and finance management. With good grades in Business Studies at A-Level I gained an excellent grounding in the core principles of the discipline, for example, while I have also demonstrated a strong grasp of mathematics, its scientific application in Physics and Astronomy, and its financial applications in Accounting. This knowledge and experience will ensure that I am well prepared to study the complex aspects of finance at undergraduate level. I have also long been interested in the communication skills necessary to provide effective management and have worked to improve these abilities through the study of English and Media. 

Having carefully planned my route into Business Studies through my school career, I have  spent the last year beginning an undergraduate course in Business Studies. While this has  afforded me a valuable opportunity to undertake undergraduate level study of management,  marketing, accounting, statistics and computing, due to personal reasons I believe that I have  not been able to achieve my full potential at my current institution. By moving to an alternative  university, with a high quality of both research and teaching, I feel sure that I can build upon  this previous study and gain the level of knowledge necessary to excel in my chosen field.

Alongside my academic interests in the field I have also gained valuable work experience that  has allowed me to witness, and to play a part in, the application of the principles I have  studied in the context of the real business world. I have a year’s work experience as an Office  Assistant at a high profile stockbroker. In addition to gaining experience of general administrative duties and liasing with clients and colleagues I also undertook date entry and company filing, allowing me first-hand experience of the administrative procedures within the industry. This experience inspired even greater enthusiasm for pursuing a role within the sector and my ultimate ambition would be to achieve an employment position within investment or corporate finance.

Outside of academia and employment I also make an effort to keep up with developments in the world of business and finance. I read both The Financial Times and The Economist on a regular basis and find that applying the academic knowledge I have learnt through education to situations I read about allows me to move beyond the theoretical and consider the practical applications. I also enjoy keeping fit and am a regular gym goer, while listening to music and watching movies are both activities that allow me opportunities for both relaxation and for socialising with friends.

I believe that I have proven myself to be a dedicated and capable student with the potential to  perform well across all aspects of the study of business and finance. Despite some personal  difficulties, I have retained a strong sense of focus and am determined to achieve my ultimate  goal of working for a prominent institution in London, the world’s financial capital. If offered the  chance to pursue further study at a prestigious university in the city, bolstered by the  enthusiasm that being surrounded by the twin worlds of business and finance will inevitably  engender, I believe that I can deliver on this promise throughout undergraduate study and  beyond.

If you want to study courses in the Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences and circumstances have prevented you from realising your academic potential, this is an opportunity not to miss. ​  This innovative route is designed for a new field of candidates to help them realise their academic potential through a full-time, residential programme fully embedded in the Collegiate University.  The course is open to those ordinarily resident in the UK and applicants must meet eligibility criteria.  There are no tuition fees and all students receive a non-repayable scholarship to cover living costs on the programme.

On the Foundation Year, you can expect  a challenging academic curriculum in the arts, humanities and social sciences . This offers the best possible preparation for the rigours of a Cambridge degree course by broadening and deepening your knowledge and understanding as well as introducing you to the ways students learn at Cambridge. Foundation Year students will also benefit from being part of the University, including being part of a College community and having full access to all the University’s societies and facilities to pursue their interests.

Finally, you will gain a nationally recognised Certificate of Higher Education and upon finishing the course you will  have the option to continue to a number of suitable undergraduate degree courses at Cambridge .

Applicants must apply  via UCAS  by the January deadline. For 2024 entry, this is 6PM on 31 January 2024 . 

After applying, students must also complete the  Foundation Year Supplementary Application Questionnaire (FYSAQ) . This is your opportunity to express a  preference College,  provide evidence of your eligibility and provide us with further information about your suitability for the course. The deadline for this is personal to you but is usually around 2 weeks after your application (less if you apply close to the UCAS deadline).

Shortlisted applicants will be notified in early March 2024, and will be invited to complete a  pre-interview admissions assessment . This does not require advance registration and can be completed from home or school. 

Shortlisted applicants will also be invited to  interview.  

Offers will be issued via UCAS. 2024 entry offers will be issued in early May 2024.

In order to be eligible to apply to the Foundation Year, applicants must have or be projected to receive  120 UCAS academic tariff points . We accept a variety of qualifications within this academic requirement including A Levels, BTECs and Access to HE Diplomas. The full list of qualifications we accept is listed  here . 

Alongside the academic entry requirement, meet eligibility requirements relating to educational or social disadvantage and disruption and be ordinarily resident in the UK ( international students see here ). 

Our eligibility criteria reflect experiences that have been shown to negatively impact educational attainment. These criteria are  a gateway to consideration  for this programme and  places are awarded on academic suitability.  

The full criteria are available here.   However, in brief, there are three categories: individual characteristics, family characteristics and school/college characteristics. Applicants must meet one or more criteria from at least two of the categories to be eligible. Care-experienced applicants and applicants from a foreced migrant background, however, are automatically eligible. Evidence of eligibility is required during the application process and is gathered through the  FYSAQ .

Additional guidance is available for mature applicants (aged 21 or over when the course starts) and for applicants with Refugee/ Seeking Asylum status .

You need to choose the University of Cambridge as an institution on your UCAS application. You should select the course 'Foundation Year in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences' as the course and 'Open' for your College (you can express a preference later).

Your UCAS application will include a Personal Statement. If you are applying to the Foundation Year as well as other courses at other universities, your Personal Statement can focus on the subject you are interested in and it does not have to mention your motivations for studying the Foundation Year specifically. You will get the chance to expand on this in the  FYSAQ .

Please note that the Cambridge Foundation Year is only open to those who have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the United Kingdom for the three years prior to the start date of the course, and that residence should not have been wholly or mainly for the purposes of receiving education. However, applications are welcomed from those in the UK with refugee status, humanitarian protection status or asylum seekers.

Applicants must normally be nationals of the UK or have indefinite leave to enter/remain in the UK, i.e. they must not be subject under immigration laws to any restriction on the period for which they may stay in the UK (unless they are a refugee, asylum seeker or have pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme). Applicants may also be eligible if they are not a UK national but are either under 18 and have lived in the UK for at least 7 years, or are 18 or over and have lived in the UK for at least 20 years (or at least half of their life).

Any global business relies on its management and ability to make informed decisions, consider internal and external factors, and think critically and creatively. I want to be a part of this revolution, thus I humbly submit this business management personal statement to hopefully earn a place in your programme.

Since the turn of the century, organisations have had access to an explosion of data and witnessed its value multiply.

It is now possible for companies to extract knowledge using qualitative and quantitative methods, such as analyzing customer preferences in real-time and predicting future trends. Data is now driving innovation and competitive advantage through boardroom decision-making.

Only those companies that implement data analytics, customer centricity, and AI into their process will survive in the long run. Blackberry, Blockbuster, and MySpace are all intriguing examples of companies that failed to be agile and could not compete against Apple, Netflix, and Facebook.

As a result, I am more convinced of the growing importance of good management and the interdisciplinary skills covered in this degree, which will contribute to my pursuit of a career as a Management Consultant. Due to the subjects I studied at A-level, I am confident I will excel in this course.

Statistics and Mathematics have allowed me to think logically and apply statistical techniques to understanding data. In contrast, History has equipped me with a critical understanding of history and the ability to compose coherent and persuasive writing.

A number of my research projects with Geography have focused on global events, such as analysing and evaluating problems, solutions, and broader implications, including environmental, social, legal, and economic impacts. I was awarded flying colours for consistently high academic performance.

As my secondary school didn’t offer the school certificate preparation in Economics, I decided to teach myself as part of my foundation year. 

I have developed various skills through co-curricular activities, including leadership, teamwork, and time management. My responsibilities included managing the students to ensure the smooth functioning of our school food club. I used my communication skills and customer relationship management to resolve conflicts between members and stakeholders.

I also studied for a course in the Oxbridge Creative Writing Virtual Retreat at the University of Cambridge, where I earned an “A” and came to realise how beneficial it would be to study at a worldwide renowned and outward-looking institution which would offer me opportunities and connections unavailable in my native country.

I would consider it a great honour to be selected for a Management degree that teaches the technical, human, and conceptual skills necessary to run a business and teaches contemporary modules that will prepare me to work in today’s technologically advanced world.

MSc Business Management Personal Statement Example

My interest in business management began early at XYZ Grammar School, where I participated in an enterprise week. This gave me an insight into the workings of small businesses and how they operate. I found it very interesting and would like to continue learning about it.

I also studied economics at A Level which has given me a better grasp of the concepts behind the business. The “Markets in Perspective” course during my undergraduate course was both exciting and valuable as it taught me about how governments affect markets.

Governments’ influence on the environment is essential when considering environmental sciences and business because they may impact the surrounding environments where we work, including health and safety regulations, pollution restrictions, and recycling.

I’ve worked in the food industry for three years, gaining valuable experience in every aspect of the business. My role included everything from processing milk to packaging products. I learned about the importance of quality control and how important it is to ensure that your product meets the highest standards.

I also learnt about our actions’ impact on the environment. One particular project I was involved in saw us recycle almost half of the waste we produced. I’m keen to continue working in the food industry and gain further experience.

I am an active participant in my community and am currently involved in volunteering. This has taught me much about how large companies and industrialisation affect our environment. Today, corporations are being held accountable for their environmental impacts. My studies in physics have helped me collect and analyze information to establish trends.

I have worked in a small retail store and learned to communicate effectively through interacting directly with clients and suppliers. In addition, I apply these basic principles in my extracurricular activities.

These include playing sports such as cricket and swimming, as well as taking part in various clubs and societies. These experiences have allowed me to succeed in a career in management. Communication and teamwork are essential to reaching my goals of running my own company.

I have developed my interest in rugby by practising my managerial skills when coaching younger players and planning team drills. A sports leadership programme required me to enforce rules and regulations and to make quick, accurate judgements. I have leadership qualities, and my ambition and enthusiasm will be apparent during my studies. In essence, my drive is to enter and succeed in the business world with the knowledge attained from my degree.

I believe strongly that you must live up to and exceed expectations to succeed in business. A good reputation is vital. As Sir Richard Branson states in Business Stripped Bare, ”don’t promise what you can’t deliver, and deliver everything you promise’.

The personal statement is an important part of your UCAS application.

It helps admissions staff at the University decide whether to make you an offer. Some courses have many more applicants than places and there may be many students with good grades applying for the same course as you. 

What is it?

Your personal statement is a short written piece about you. It gives evidence of your skills, knowledge and experience. It’s your chance to tell us why you want to study a particular course and why you would make a great student. Read about:

Maximum length

47 lines or 4,000 characters maximum – whichever comes first.

What to include

Your personal statement is your chance to stand out from the crowd. It is unique and individual to you, but some things to include are:

  • Enthusiasm and motivation – your passion for the course should be clear and relate to you and your experiences (eg projects, field trips or experiences at school that sparked your interest in your subject). 
  • Understanding of the subject – you need to show you have some knowledge and understanding, even if you have not studied the subject at high school or college. If you have done some reading about the subject, outside of school, mention this.
  • Academic prizes or scholarships – this will help you stand out and show evidence of your potential.
  • Career aspirations – even if you do not have clear career plans yet, you can show you have thought about your future career and how your chosen degree could help you achieve this.
  • Relevant work experience/voluntary activities – explain what skills you have gained from the experience, including skills that would be useful in your university studies. 
  • Non-academic interests – your hobbies (such as sports, baking or reading) show your personality and can be a chance to demonstrate different skills.
  • What you will contribute to the university community – we want to know what you can bring to Leeds, as well as what you want to get out of university life.

International and EU students

If you are a non-UK student, you should also mention:

  • Why you want to study in the UK.
  • Why you want to be an international student, rather than study in your own country.

What to avoid

  • Plagiarism (copying) – all statements will be checked for plagiarism. Your statement must be your own work so do not use templates. If you have applied before, check your personal statement is completely up to date and relevant to your current application.
  • Skills without examples – show how you have developed the skills you think you will need, don't just list them.
  • Listing subject knowledge – explain how your knowledge has helped you build career aspirations, choose your degree, or prepare for coming to university.
  • Repeating qualifications – don't repeat information covered elsewhere on the application. This uses up valuable space in your personal statement.
  • Short personal statement – make the most of the space you have. A short statement suggests you lack of passion or commitment to the course you are applying for.

Our top tips

  • Write your personal statement in MS Word (or similar) first, so you can check your spelling and grammar before you add it into your application.
  • Get someone else, like your tutor, family or friends, to read your statement to check for any errors and make suggestions before you submit it. You may need a few drafts before you are happy with the final version.
  • If English is not your first language, you could mention any opportunities you have had to use English (eg an English-speaking school or work with a company that uses English).
  • Use plain, clear English. Be careful with humour, quotes or anything unusual. The admissions tutor might not have the same sense of humour as you!
  • Don’t exaggerate. If you get an interview, you might be asked for more detail about what you have written.
  • Check the faculty or school website of your chosen course for guidance on your personal statement - especially important if you are applying for a course in medicine or dentistry. For example, see Leeds University Business School's 8 ways to perfect your UK university application .
  • Check UCAS application deadlines  to make sure you apply before the closing date. For courses in medicine and dentistry, this is earlier than many other courses.

For the aspiring entrepreneurs and business leaders, a business management degree is consistently a popular choice. After much deliberation, I have decided to pursue BA (Hons) Business Administration (Top up) at University of Bedfordshire. In addition, this course also features different modules which will give me the opportunity to apply my theories and ideas in practice, and this will benefit me to enhance my skills and knowledge.

Following my SSC and HSC I studied Bachelor of Business Studies degree pass course in July 2017 from National University, Bangladesh. Later on, I started working as a sales executive from July 2017. After thorough research of the job market in my country of Bangladesh, as well as abroad, I have realized that in order to reach my career goals, I need to embark on this educational journey to pursue this course. Recently, I have done a wide range of research on studying abroad. I believe studying abroad helps students to learn new languages, appreciate other cultures, overcome challenges of living in another country and gain a greater understanding of the world. In addition, these are the requirements that modern businesses look for when hiring, and such traits will only become more important in the future. Moreover, studying abroad also offers a unique opportunity to learn what we know but from a totally different perspective. These are the things which have motivated me to pursue this course in the UK institutions.

I have found from my research that this programme is designed to develop all the technical and practical skills I need to prepare myself for a successful career in business sector. The programme features a variety of assessments including coursework and examinations. I have reviewed the programme of BA (Hons) Business Administration (Top up) at the University of Bedfordshire and found some modules that are designed to test subject knowledge and understanding of the appropriate subject matter, but also to demonstrate the range of intellectual and subject specific skills identified elsewhere in this document. Through research, I will get opportunities to demonstrate that understanding of the theory and will have developed critical thinking skills which help me to evaluate the relevance of what has been learned. The course modules have been designed to help me to develop and demonstrate the skills that are essential to effective communication in business settings and to allow for progress through the course such as Management and Administration of Projects and Operations, New Advancements in Business, Strategic Management for Business, Business Finance, Global Marketing Strategy. And all these modules will help me to broaden my knowledge of business management systems on a professional level. After completion of my course, I want to be a Business Developer or Business Analyst, and this course will put me in a favourable position in terms of the business and management field. I believe this course will be the right choice for my career plans and objectives.

I am determined to study this course in the UK as the study environment in my country is quite different and we only have the opportunity to study with local students. Furthermore, due to periods of unexpected political unrest, students often struggle to finish their degrees on time. Conversely, the UK has a great multicultural and diversified student community which is an opportunity for me to learn with lot of students from different nationalities. UK education brand is highly respected by employers in our country as UK degree prepare graduates with academic competencies, developed personal and professional skills that are imperative for organizational success. The transferrable skills graduates carry forward from UK are pivotal for transforming organizational growth and gain competitive advantages. This is also a reason to study again in UK. In a recent Survey of International Graduate Outcomes 2019 by Universities UK International produced by iGraduate shows that 82% international graduates say that their UK degree are worth the financial investment and same percentage say they are satisfied or very satisfied with their careers. Nearly 83% feel that UK degree has helped them to get jobs. These aspects have driven my ambition to gain the degree from a UK institution. For this reason, I have decided to pursue this course in the UK.

BA Management

This extended four-year course allows you to study for a degree in one of the following:

  • accounting and finance
  • banking and finance
  • business management with marketing
  • human resource management
  • international business
  • international business and finance
  • international business and marketing

The first year of the course is primarily taught by the Lifelong Learning Centre (LLC) but could also involve modules delivered by Leeds University Business School (LUBS) depending on your choice of pathway. The second year of the course involves modules delivered by the both the LLC and LUBS.

During the first two years, you'll gain an understanding of the key aspects of business studies, covering subjects such as innovation and enterprise, organisational environment, marketing and organisational behaviour, as well as specialist modules depending on your choice of pathway. The first two years will provide you with intensive and well-structured support to help you develop the skills and knowledge required to be successful.

On successful completion of the first two years and subject to meeting the specific requirements for progression, you'll progress onto your chosen degree course at Leeds University Business School.

This course is for UK students from a widening participation background (who meet our additional entry criteria) and who don’t currently meet the typical entry requirements for direct entry to a degree. This course does not accept students with previous higher education experience, including other foundation years or international students.

The first year of the course has been specifically designed such that academic, digital and professional skills are developed through a set of three compulsory modules. During the first year, these transferable skills can be acquired and then refined with the help of module tutors and dedicated skills tutors to give you the very best chance of success both on the course and beyond.

The Business Studies with Foundation Year is a full-time, four-year course that allows you to follow one of nine pathways to study towards a full honours degree from Leeds University Business School.

  • Business management with marketing pathway - this leads to the award of BA Business Management with Marketing

  • International business and finance pathway - this leads to the award of BSc International Business and Finance

In your first two years, you'll gain an understanding of the key aspects of business studies. The structure has been designed to offer you academic, personal and professional development in a supportive and encouraging environment. This will help to ensure that you have the academic knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the third and fourth years of study.

On completion of the first two years of the course, you should have provided evidence of being able to:

  • Apply knowledge and understanding of the nature, purpose, function and structure of different types of organisations.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the inter-relationships between organisational structure, culture and the wider organisational environment and the impact on organisations brought about by changes in the internal, external and global environment.
  • Apply a critical understanding of theories of business management across a range of organisational contexts in the areas such as innovation and enterprise, marketing, organisational behaviour, organisational environment, management, economics and accounting.
  • Demonstrate digital, academic and professional literacies within business related disciplines.

Year 1 compulsory modules

Introduction to Innovation and Enterprise (20 credits) - This module will allow you to explore the nature and role of entrepreneurship and will encourage you to develop the skills and knowledge that you'll need to apply innovative and creative problem-solving skills within an organisational context.

Introduction to the Organisational Environment (20 credits) - This module provides you with a broad understanding of the nature, purpose and structure of different types of organisations and the tools used to analyse the impact on organisations brought about by changes in the internal, external and global environment.

Introduction to Marketing (20 credits) - The aim of this module is to introduce you to the philosophy of market orientation and the tools for environmental scanning, market research, segmentation, targeting and positioning through the process of marketing planning leading to the marketing tactics (the marketing mix decisions).

Year 2 compulsory modules

Organisational behaviour (20 credits) - This module presents and evaluates current knowledge about human behaviour in organisations from the point of view of the individual employee, the work group and the organisation itself. There is an emphasis on developing relevant skills through learning theoretical content and following this up with the practical application of ideas in a management context. A critical perspective is adopted throughout.

Throughout your degree you will benefit from a range of opportunities to expand your intellectual horizons outside or within your subject area. This course gives you the opportunity to choose from a range of discovery modules. They’re a great way to tailor your study around your interests or career aspirations and help you stand out from the crowd when you graduate. You'll learn through a mix of face-to-face workshops, seminars and lectures complemented by tutor support, group work and a range of digital resources.

There is a strong emphasis during the first two years on building your academic skills to help you achieve your full potential. You’ll be taught by our expert academics who have subject and research specialism in the areas of degree progression, as well as vast experience of working with mature and under-represented students.

Teaching is imaginative, inclusive and supportive to make sure that you're intellectually stretched and helped through any sticking points in your learning. You’ll receive support from your academic personal tutor for your academic and professional development.

On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.

Assessment is an important way of enabling you to learn actively and feedback from tutors supports this process.

Methods of assessment used in the first two years reflect those that you'll find later in your degree to ensure that you're well prepared for continuing study and help to ensure that your written, discussion and digital skills are developed in preparation for Years 3 and 4 of your degree.

Our range of assessment methods help you to develop numerous transferable academic and professional skills that can be applied within both academic and employment contexts. Our assessment methods include essays, business reports, journals, real life case studies, presentations, creative portfolios, and timed assessments.

Entry requirements

A-level: CCC excluding critical thinking and general studies. Applicants taking a Science A-level (in England) will be required to achieve a pass in the practical element in addition to the standard A-level grade requirement.

GCSE: English and maths grade C/4 or above, or equivalent. Applicants interested in following the Accounting and Finance, Banking and Finance, Economics or International Business with Finance pathway will need GCSE maths at grade B/6 or above, or equivalent. Applicants interested in following the Business Management with Marketing or International Business with Marketing pathway will need grade B/6 or above in GCSE English Language and GCSE Maths at grade C/4. T Levels will be considered on a case by case basis. We welcome applications from students with a wide range of qualifications.

As well as the academic requirements above, you must live permanently in the UK and meet at least one of the following:

You attended a school that achieved less than the national average of five A*-C / 9-4 passes (including English and Maths) at GCSE or attainment 8 score at GCSE in a state school. We use the All England State-funded attainment 8 score, excluding applicants from selective and/or independent schools.

You grew up in public care.

We actively encourage applications from mature students. Further consideration will be given to the life experience of mature applicants and the circumstances in which they gained prior qualifications.

Alternative entry

Alternative Entry Scheme for mature applicants

If you are a mature applicant and you don’t have the required A Levels or GCSE qualifications, you can complete our Alternative Entry Scheme (subject to meeting the eligibility criteria for the scheme). As part of this, you may be asked to take tests in English and mathematics and to write an essay.

UK: £9,250 (per year)

Tuition fees for UK undergraduate students starting in 2024/25 Tuition fees for UK full-time undergraduate students are set by the UK Government and will be £9,250 for students starting in 2024/25.

The fee may increase in future years of your course in line with inflation only, as a consequence of future changes in Government legislation and as permitted by law.

Tuition fees for UK undergraduate students starting in 2025/26 Tuition fees for UK full-time undergraduate students starting in 2025/26 have not yet been confirmed by the UK government. When the fee is available we will update individual course pages.

Tuition fees for international undergraduate students starting in 2024/25 and 2025/26 Tuition fees for international students for 2024/25 are available on individual course pages. Fees for students starting in 2025/26 will be available from September 2024.

There are no upfront fees to pay. All eligible students are able to borrow the entire cost of tuition fees making study free at the point of entry, with good repayment terms. Physiology foundation year personal statement example.

My fascination with Science was established during my time at college where I studied Health Studies. I have always had an enthusiastic interest in science based subjects, specifically Physiology. Studying the subject as part of my Health Studies course has made me comprehend that the life of Science is what I want to be a part of. My interests in the natural world and the study of science have motivated me to take it to a sophisticated level and further my understanding. Studying Science at college has given me a good foundation of skills and knowledge which I will bring to studying Physiology in University. I believe that the course will facilitate me to elaborate the scientific skills needed to endow me with the depth of understanding in order to be a professional Clinical Physiologist.

Physiology is the science that is concerned with the functioning of organisms, cells and of the living matter. I believe that it is crucial to society as it is the foundation upon which we build our knowledge of what life is and how to treat various diseases and illnesses. It also gives people an understanding of how to manage with stresses imposed upon our bodies by modernistic environments. From the study of Physiology we have learnt that illnesses such as Diabetes are where there is a lack of glucose in fat and muscle cells. Despite this, Physiologists have not yet found a long term cure however are still pursuing short term treatments such as receiving doses of insulin. Therefore by advancing my knowledge at university I am determined to play my part in finding a long term cure by carrying out thorough researches and carefully analysing the effects of the interaction of antidote and cells.

I have taken up opportunities to voluntarily work at well established organisations such as a care home, children's centre and also a private nursery. Such work placements have facilitated me with exceptional communication skills, both professionally and personally. By having hands on experience in the healthcare sector I enhanced my scientific skills and enjoyed studying and evaluating information related to patients health. Work placements have developed me into being more self-assured, independent and responsible. Having the prospect to work with some people that had physiological disorders such as Diabetes, Arthritis and have suffered from Cancer previously, has given me an additional understanding of Physiology and how a person's life is affected by an illness or disease.

I have an intense interest on travelling, reading non-fiction books, and learning to speak and write Arabic. Arabic is a culture that has fascinated me throughout the years. I have taken a keen curiosity in the culture and have learned to read Arabic and also have completed innumerable researches into it. This has amplified my knowledge on the culture and has assisted me to comprehend it in additional depth. As I speak English, Urdu, Punjabi, and also have some knowledge about Arabic, I believe I can further my future career in physiology by interacting with people from different cultures. I have also enjoyed a variety of activities from countryside walks to organising family reunions. Organising such events has made me the confident and trust worthy person that I am. It has enhanced my self esteem and aided me to socialise with friends, family and new people.

Studying at University has always been an ambition of mine as it has a wealth of experiences to offer students. I believe that Clinical Physiologists have a vital role to play in our understanding and treatment of disease. I feel my determination to participate on the physiology degree will advance my scientific knowledge and skills to secure a career that will be advantageous to me and positively affect society. I am a mature and motivated student and I certainly wish to excel in education.

Psychology with Foundation Year Personal Statement

“It is not primarily our physical selves that limit us but rather our mind-set about our physical limits.” – Ellen J. Langer

In what way can our mind-set limit us, and to what extent is it a limiting factor? However, can’t human biology and evolution also limit us? These common questions shaped my interest in understanding abstract psychological concepts. From my individual research, Psychologist Langer (1997) concluded that a crucial aspect about ‘The Power of Mindful Learning’ is that we learn to avoid forming mind-sets that could unnecessarily limit us and this innovates our perception of the world. However, “mindless learning” can be represented as antagonistic to ‘mindfulness’- an example of mindless learning is when we are exposed to new information; we involuntarily process that information without questioning, and consequently this restricts our understanding. This sparked my curiosity because what intrigues me about Psychology is that there are alternative perspectives, which can be applied to the real world. As a Psychology student, I do not want to feel restricted with one viewpoint, as I believe it is vital for the development of key skills within the field of Psychology such as thinking more critically.

Before I pursued Psychology as an A-Level, I had developed an interest in factors that could drive human behaviour and I had many unsolved questions about cognitive Psychology, which predominantly shaped my ambition. My curiosity tailored towards the way we process sensory information and how ‘faulty’ processing occurs. During my studies, I began to challenge several aspects of Psychology, by taking in account different approaches and factors. My decision to study A-Level Biology has deepened my knowledge around how the field of Biology and Psychology are interrelated; an example of this is how the human biology can be manipulated with drug use, as a result, it affects our behaviour through the release of hormones and neurotransmitters. Furthermore, studying A-Level Geography has honed my analytical skills when handling data, due to the nature of examining statistics; it has driven me to question why such cultural variations and norms exist on a geographical scale.

My participation in 'The Scholars Programme' in 2015 reinforced my decision to progress my studies onto university. ‘The Scholars Programme’ run by ‘The Brilliant Club’ aim to increase the number of pupils from under-represented backgrounds and state schools to progress to highly selective universities. From the challenging university-style sessions I had attended, I learnt the importance of being more independent and focused which was a vast difference between sixth form and university. Aside from academia, I engage in multiple extracurricular activities. For example, I play badminton once a fortnight, which benefits me by helping me maintain a healthy lifestyle, by playing a major role in improving my mental wellbeing.

In conclusion, as a young female aspiring to become a Cognitive Psychologist, I have been inspired by multiple elements of Psychology, such as the work conducted by Ellen J. Langer. I wish to advance to the next stage towards my goal and ultimately as an engrossed student, I believe completing a Psychology degree at your institution will give me the best opportunity to pursue a successful career, providing introspection, just as pioneering psychologists like Langer have done before me.
