Monster Inside – Hulu Review (3/5)

MONSTER INSIDE: AMERICA’S MOST EXTREME HAUNTED HOUSE on Hulu is a documentary that shocks and puzzles its audience. Obviously, the immersive horror experiences are truly wild and extreme. However, it also feels like people wanted this. Read our full Monster Inside documentary review here!

MONSTER INSIDE: AMERICA’S MOST EXTREME HAUNTED HOUSE is a new Hulu documentary that will leave you feeling lots of things, I’m sure. I know that’s what it did for me. Also, I’m left wondering if there are any actual victims here. Sure, Russ McKamey’s methods are sick and he seems like a sadist with no limits. Isn’t that something he’s very honest about though?!

Brutal and terrible things happen at these immersive horror experiences. That much is very obvious. However, it’s also this exact experience that people seek out. Clearly, it’s wilder and more extreme than the participants expected, but the “advertising” (videos of former participants) would have me running in the opposite direction. Not towards it. That puzzles me.

Continue reading our  Monster Inside documentary review below. Find it on Hulu from October 12, 2023.

Extreme and immersive horror

As much as I love horror, I have no interest in seeking out these extreme and immersive horror experiences. Sure, I’ll do the haunted house ride at any amusement park, but that’s about it. However, some people want to take it much further and these are the people that Russ McKamey is catering to.

Or so they think. In reality, they don’t want to go as far as he takes them.

In  Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House the story of Russ McKamey is told. Without him participating in any way other than from archive footage. Russ McKamey is a Navy Veteran (which will surely surprise absolutely no one) who created an extreme and immersive horror experience at McKamey Manor.

Basically, he turned himself into a sadistic master of horror. It’s stated that he “lures horror enthusiasts into his web”, but I feel like people wanted to buy what he was selling. So to speak. Or rather, they thought they wanted this. We only hear from a handful of former participants, who – in a few instances – returned for a second tour or started working for him.

Personally, The Walking Dead  attraction at Universal Studios is more than enough for me. If I want to push myself, I’d go for an OCR competition (which also kicks your ass) or confront a fear of heights, spiders, or what have you. But hey, to each their own.

Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House – Review | Hulu Documentary

Was this what anyone wanted?

The Monster Inside documentary is a brutal watch in many ways, but it also gives an important insight; Sometimes the thing, you  think  you want, isn’t what you really want. Anyone looking for an immersive horror experience in a haunted house setting is probably still wanting to be in  some  sort of control. That’s never what you’ll get with Russ McKamey.

One former participant did say something that resonated with me and put things in perspective. She said that she went there looking to live through her own horror experience. Not his fantasy. This makes sense to me and I can understand how the actual events were quite different from the expected.

Yet, from everything I could see from the many videos, it seems obvious that everything going on was always about his fantasy. That leaves me thinking about the “Leopards Eating People’s Faces Party”-meme. It stems from a Tweet with the wording “‘I never thought leopards would eat MY face,’ sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People’s Faces Party.”

That’s pretty much what watching this documentary made me think of; I see someone who is absolutely sadistic and loves inflicting torment. Yet somehow, others see this and think “I want to try this”. Then they try it and are left feeling tormented. Well, yes, that was what you signed up for.

The one person who seems to have understood the mission is the tech guy who Russ McKamey couldn’t break, so he kicked him out of the Haunted House tour. A “tour” which for the record is rarely much inside any haunted house setting, it would appear. It seems more like a “tour” in the military sense. In any case, the tech guy ended up getting access to Russ’ emails and exposed him, which I loved.

Watch Monster Inside  on Hulu now!

Andrew Renzi is the director of Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House . I felt like he tried to stick to the facts which is much easier when you have footage to show. And there are  no  reenactments in this Hulu documentary. Everything you see is from actual “extreme haunted house” experiences at McKamey Manor.

While I do think it’s absolutely insane that these things occur, I also feel that they can only exist because some people want this. Or think they want it. They feel a need to prove or challenge themselves. Russ McKamey exploits this. He absolutely does. And while he isn’t completely honest – for one, he decides when a tour is over, which ensures no one will ever win the cash prize – he doesn’t lie much.

I’m actually quite nervous that this documentary will yet again have people seeking out Russ McKamey. I mean, we live in a world where people send fan mail and love letters to serial killers. Some people want extreme experiences and they just might watch Monster Inside and figure “I could do that!”. Oh yeah, I feel certain that this will result in a spike of interest for McKamey yet again.

Monster Inside is on Hulu from October 12, 2023.

Russ McKamey is the creator of the world’s “most extreme haunted house” – McKamey Manor. He is also a manipulative abuser, according to three people who realize the horror is never over once you decide to enter the Manor.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!

Hulu's Must-See Doc 'Monster Inside' Exposes the Most Extreme Haunted House

There's haunted houses and then there's McKamy Manor. Enter if you dare.

The Big Picture

  • McKamey Manor is an extreme haunted house in Summertown, Tennessee that pushes visitors to their breaking points through torture and horrifying experiences.
  • Visitors are subjected to waterboarding, drug use, self-extraction of teeth, and other forms of physical and psychological torture.
  • Owner Russ McKamey records the experiences for his own twisted enjoyment and takes pleasure in controlling and terrifying the victims, who are mostly vulnerable young women.

If you're here, you probably love horror, scary stuff, the spooky, the macabre, and the extreme. However, McKamey Manor isn't your run-of-the-mill Halloween Horror Nights or local haunted house. It is much more extreme and terrifying under the surface. Hulu released Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House , and it pulled no punches in exposing the dark and horrific secrets behind the grimy, dark walls.

McKamey Manor is located in Summertown, Tennessee. Owner and operator Russ McKamey is a former Navy vet who created the house out of his love for Halloween. What seemingly started out as a regular haunted house eventually grew out of control when Russ realized that the more extreme his haunts and scares were, the larger the audience he drew in to watch. The goal of the manor as we see it in the documentary is to push visitors to their absolute breaking points, regardless of what torture methods he has to use to reach that edge. McKamey Manor boasts a 40-page waiver that all participants must sign and get cleared by a doctor before being able to participate. The waiver even lists death as a possibility. The price of entry is either a bag or a couple of cans of dog food. If you can last, you get $20,000, but at what cost?

What Happens at McKamey Manor?

The documentary chronicles the experiences of some visitors to the manor. Each of these interviewees describes how they have a thrill-seeking personality type, and that desire for thrill is what led them to find McKamey Manor. Under the belief that they have the right to end the experience at any time and are given a safe word, the visitors take their chances on the possibility of death to take part in something like they never have before. One of the survivors of McKamey Manor reportedly used her safe word for multiple minutes before the employees stopped the torture. In the documentary, one woman recounted how she listed spiders as her greatest fear during her intake interview, and of course, she was tormented by tarantulas during the experience. She told the documentary that she was afraid for her life because the tarantulas were being mishandled and if she agitated them any further, they could bite and fatally poison her. Other visitors described how they had been water-boarded, and drugged, and they have even had visitors extract their own teeth under the guise of an "extreme experience." There is one visitor who described her experience and how she is forever traumatized because of what didn't happen on camera. After being tied up, drugged, and tortured, she feared what didn't get captured on camera because Russ told her he wasn't able to film the "good stuff."

Is Russ McKamey Abusing the Experience for His Own Pleasure?

No one has ever been able to survive and win the $20,000 that Russ McKamey boasts when the visitors sign up. Russ records all the experiences of each visitor, no matter how physically or psychologically demented it may be. Russ told WFLA that he records these for his own protection, but is it actually for his own twisted enjoyment? In the documentary, former girlfriends and friends spoke about how he would replay the footage and laugh at the fear that emanated through the screen. From an outside perspective, it appears that Russ takes enjoyment out of commanding control over the victims. One visitor who was actually asked to leave the experience reiterates that for viewers. This man fought back with Russ on camera and refused to give in to his mental breakdown tactics, and Russ asked him to leave before calling him a nutcase. The majority of the participants that Russ accepts are vulnerable young women, according to Bloody Disgusting .

McKamey Manor Draws In Thrill-Seekers

Stan Hsue and Allison Corn are the producers behind the show and in their Deadline interview they mentioned how careful they were about getting the inside scoop on McKamey Manor without further exacerbating the trauma that these visitors endured. They went as far as to bring on a human rights lawyer who specializes in the subject of torture. The documentary tackles a specific thrill-seeking personality type. There can be many reasons why someone would seek out such an extreme experience, but in the case of McKamey Manor, general consent alone doesn't seem to excuse the heinous things that happen there. Many have asked how McKamey Manor can still be operating, but because of the extensive 40-page waiver they have signed, there's a loophole for Russ to get out of any liability for what happens to the visitors during and after they leave. In the second half of the documentary, we see some of the interviewees subjecting themselves to other extreme situations similar to McKamey Manor. Regardless of the trauma they have developed from McKamey Manor, they still desire something to fill that void. Another extreme experience they showed in the documentary called Miasma offers a bit more aftercare and explicit instructions with a safe word given to participants. These standards alone show how McKamey Manor isn't an experience geared to the participant but is focused more on the owner and operator getting his fill.

Does Horror Media Today Desensitize Horror Fans?

It is not uncommon for horror lovers to dive into the deep, dark world of the grotesque and that is where they will find experiences like McKamey Manor and Miasma. Horror has taken a bit of a turn over the last decade, but there was a large rise in the popularity of splatter and torture horror in the '00s . Movies like Saw , Hostel , and Ichi The Killer show extreme gore, mutilation, and torture scenes that audiences get desensitized and accustomed to seeing. It's possible that watching these grisly scenes on television makes horror fans and thrill seekers feel more confident to participate in haunts to test their mental fortitude. Watching something on screen is much different than being buried alive or having your worst fears realized. Monster Inside poses the lingering question of why would anyone do anything so extreme. Is the intrigue worth the potential of enduring trauma?

Monster Inside is streaming now on Hulu as part of their Huluween collection .

What to expect in Monster Inside?

Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House is executive produced and directed by Andrew Renzi. It is produced by Lion Television US, with Allison Corn and Stan Hsue executive producing. Described as a “Merging documentary storytelling with the visual and cinematic language of a horror film,” the documentary follows three participants as they dive deep into the twisted world of McKamey Manor’s founder.

“What would it be like to be trapped in a real-life horror movie? Monster Inside follows the story of Russ McKamey,” reads the synopsis. “The Navy Veteran who lures horror enthusiasts into his web. They find themselves pulled into the no-holds-barred world of McKamey Manor – a haunt that doesn’t end until Russ says so. Originally starting McKamey Manor to satiate his love of Halloween, as the haunt grew in popularity, both on the ground and on social media, so did the severity of Russ’ scare tactics – realizing that he was attracting more and more followers as he did so.

“By cultivating an online persona and a cult-like following, Russ was allowed to display his basest instincts and rewarded with online fame and notoriety. Driven by his personal fixations, he turned his backyard haunt into a bona fide torture chamber: videotaping ‘contestants,’ particularly vulnerable young women, as he sees how far he can push them – both inside and outside of the haunt.

“Through the stories of our main characters, and expert commentary, the film hopes to show how a person’s past could draw them into extreme activity, some forms of which might actually be beneficial, and thus more broadly answer the question: why do we do anything extreme?”

Where is jennifer pan from netflix's 'what jennifer did' now, holly madison says she “tried” exotic dancing but doesn’t have enough arm strength, stream it or skip it: ‘cult justice’ on hulu, a true crime series focusing on cult leaders, how they were caught, and the voices of their victims.

Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan , Netflix’s latest addition to its already towering stack of true crime documentary offerings, is a four-episode look at the arrest of Milligan, a serial rapist in 1977 Ohio, his lengthy examination by mental health professionals, and his eventual criminal defense, which hinged on the basis that he suffered from a mental disorder harboring numerous splintered personalities.

MONSTERS INSIDE: THE 24 FACES OF BILLY MILLIGAN : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: Static, and a fuzzy analog image emerges of a young man with shaggy hair and a peach fuzz moustache. “I do things and I don’t remember them,” he tells an interviewer off screen. “People tell me I do things. Bad things. Criminal stuff.”

The Gist: Netflix seems to have an entire wing of its streaming platform reserved for true crime, and additions keep being built onto the back end. The latest is Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan , helmed by French director Oliver Megaton, who might be best known as the director of action sequels like Transporter 3 and the last two Taken movies. Here, he combines grainy reenactments, archival audio and footage, and interviews with family, psychologists and psychiatrists, journalists, and lawyers to tell the story of Billy Milligan, who in 1977 was the 23-year-old suspect in a series of rapes on the campus of Ohio State University when his peculiar mental state came into question. With the encouragement of the public defenders assigned to his case, Milligan was interviewed and examined by a series of mental health professionals, and was eventually diagnosed with multiple personality disorder, now known as dissociative identity disorder. It became the challenge for the doctors and Milligan’s lawyers to not only determine his intellectual competence, but to establish it in court as a legitimate legal defense, something without precedent at the time.

In the first of four episodes, Billy Milligan is introduced through blurry re-creations that draw on the seedy look and feel of 1970’s grindhouse cinema. But there’s also footage of those interviews, and it’s there that “the multiples” begin to manifest — an erudite Brit named Arthur, a Yugolsavian with a mean streak called Ragen; a young girl with a nervous, high-pitched lilt. “You mean you’ll get these people outta me?” Billy, seemingly his core self, asks the doctors. And the potential line of defense begins to emerge — if Milligan was acting as one of his multiples during his crimes, then he wouldn’t have known he was even committing them. But was it real or just a clever flim flam? “Was he attempting to make a case for the multiple personality diagnosis in order to have an excuse or to exculpate himself from the charges that he faced?” Dr. Marlene Kocan, a psychologist on the case, asks in the present day. And the prosecutors interviewed admit they thought the public defenders’ multiple personalities angle was complete hogwash. But as more and more doctors analyze Billy, and his family and friends admit to his lifetime of behavioral quirks, the narrative begins to shift toward determining what traumas or terrors created Milligan’s tremulous mental state.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? The 1976 TV movie Sybil , starring Sally Field and Joanne Woodward and based on the 1973 book by Flora Rheta Schreiber about an individual with severe dissociative identity disorder, is directly referenced in the first episode of Monsters Inside when Dr. Cornelia Wilbur, the psychoanalyst who diagnosed Sybil, joins the team of doctors analyzing Milligan. And Tom Holland will play Milligan in The Crowded Room , a long-gestating project that’s now slated to be a ten-part series for Apple TV+ written and directed by A Beautiful Mind scribe Akiva Goldsman.

Our Take: “Most people don’t understand this, and they think it’s too fantastic to be real.” That statement from a modern-day psychologist about identity dissociative disorder cuts to the quick of what the first part of Monsters Inside covers. While it establishes who Billy Milligan was, and relies on interviews with family and friends to portray him as someone they couldn’t believe would ever commit the crimes he was alleged to, it also drifts heavily into the intersecting fields of psychology and psychiatry, and how clinical understanding of the symptoms Milligan manifested was still emerging in the 1970’s. In short, many of the doctors who studied him were naturally skeptical, and that skepticism only increased amid the people on the legal side of things. Monsters Inside lets the doctors have their say, and the prosecutors scoff. But from its title and those yellowed and shadowy re-enactments to the dissonant chords thudding on the soundtrack, this true crime doc wants very badly to feel like a horror movie.

This isn’t too surprising. The Conjuring films, that ultra-successful horror franchise following the exploits of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, built its third installment around the real-life case of a guy who claimed he was possessed by a demon when he killed his landlord. And don’t forget about Edward Norton personality-shifting in Primal Fear , and revealing it all as a sick ruse. The concept of multiple personalities is full of opportunities for Hollywood, and Monsters Inside delights in skating around the rim of that, even as its roots remain in the form of a true crime documentary.

Sex and Skin: Nothing overt, beyond some frank discussion about the climate of sexual violence women that had to navigate in 1970’s Ohio.

Parting Shot: “Does he know I’m here? I’m not supposed to tell things. If I do something wrong he’s going to kill me and bury me in the barn…” In its final moments, Monsters Inside returns to the interview footage of Milligan, as the psychoanalyst Wilbur peels back the layers of his childhood trauma. And then his sister Kathy Preston appears. “Billy,” she recalls saying, “I’m going to tell all of the secrets that I know.”

Sleeper Star: Milligan’s mother Dorothy appears in a grainy interview dating from sometime around the trial — it’s warped at the edges and devoid of its original color, and in her assurances of how she always knew her son was different, and in her recollections of his manifestations — “Arthur was with me quite frequently, and then along came Ragen…” — there’s more than a little framing of how family can often be the scariest thing in a horror movie.

Most Pilot-y Line: “Nobody had the sense to ask the three questions: ‘Has anybody ever told you that you did something you didn’t remember doing?’, ‘Have you ever found yourself someplace and didn’t know how you got there?’, and ‘Have you ever been aware of the fact that the clock hands seemed to have gone around and you didn’t know what happened during that time?'” And Dr. Wilbur says Milligan’s answers to all three of those questions was an unequivocal yes. It’s notable, since Monsters Inside spends so much of its first episode sifting through the varying medical opinions on Billy’s quaking brain.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan leaves the bulk of its subject’s trial and the fallout from his unlikely defense for later episodes, as well as the story of how his “multiples” numbers jumps to 24, so there are definitely bits to look forward to in this true crime outing.

Is Monster Inside on Hulu using real footage?

Is Monster Inside on Hulu using real footage

Hulu documentary Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House investigates the notoriously haunted house experience McKamey Manor , directed by Andrew Renzi. The film interviews people who have been through the experience and features actual footage and interviews of those involved.

Controversy has surrounded the attraction, owned and operated by Russ McKamey , who has been criticized and become a controversial figure, earning him the attention of many YouTube creators . The Hulu documentary shows guests in traumatizing situations, including being waterboarded, shaving their hair, and terrorizing them with tarantulas. The footage often looks like found footage, leading to viewers wondering about the film’s authenticity.

What is Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House about?

The Hulu documentary follows how McKamey Manor would evolve, becoming a torture chamber for those who dare to become involved. We hear testimony from people fascinated by the horror genre and, after hearing about the manor, wanted to attend.

However, the extreme and relentless nature of the experience has visitors regretting their decision, labeling the manor as a “cult” and casting doubt on Russ McKamey’s motivations.

It is worth noting that many people have called for the manor to be shut down via a petition , saying that the trauma that is inflicted is not safe, and others claim that they are surprised that nobody has died taking part. Here is a direct quote from the petition website at Change:

“Its literally just a kidnapping & torture house. Some people have had to seek professional psychiatric help & medical care for extensive injuries.”

Footage of McKamey himself inflicting all kinds of degradation and torment on the participants is also quite uncomfortable to watch. The footage is not for the squeamish, and you cannot help wondering about the motivations of Russ and his team, some of whom eventually left their positions within the experience.

A forty-page waiver and medical check must be in place before you can attend the manor, but even that waiver may not hold up to extensive legal examination. Although the manor is run as a nonprofit organization, there is also a twenty thousand dollar reward for anyone who can beat the manor. It has yet to be claimed.

Yes. The footage used in the Hulu documentary is real. Russ McKamey himself seems to be filming most of the experiences that people are going through, and there are many YouTube channels and uploads for the attraction that have footage available for you to watch.

Trust me when I say it is a rabbit hole of content you may not want to watch. The people interviewed in the documentary are also real people recounting their experiences.

A quick search reveals that the experience is still operational, and two locations are in use. The manors are open all year round, but only one group is entertained per week.

One house will be found in Nashville, Tennessee, and the other is in Huntsville, Alabama.
