ICT in EFL Teaching and Learning: A Systematic Literature Review

Kashif Ali Sabiri

This literature review focuses the research conducted on Information and Communication Technology in English as a Foreign Language Teaching and Learning. It reviews various aspects of ICT integration, ICT tools, barriers and challenges to ICT integration, teachers’ perceptions and views about ICT and advantages and benefits of ICT integration in education. The factors effecting pre-service and in-service teachers and student teachers’ perceptions, views and confidence about ICT integration are also discussed and analyzed. This review further discusses the gaps in the studies and establishes a theoretical background for further studies specifically in Oman.

The purpose of this study is to examine the difficulties teachers face in integrating ICT into the teaching and learning English at Islamic Junior High School. As an example, learning innovations that use ICT are no longer in phase 4.0, but are now in phase 5.0, which means that ICT is being used in all fields. Following these advancements, the integration of ICT in education has become a necessity in today's world. As a result, this fact necessitates that teachers be capable of using ICT in the classroom. However, in the field, researchers discovered a number of barriers to teachers' use of ICT in the classroom. This study takes a qualitative approach: case study. This researh focuses on observations and interviews with one English teacher in order to obtain more detailed results. This study's informant is an English teacher. The lack of training on integrating ICT into the teaching and learning process of English in the classroom, competencies, equipment, computer su...

Information and communication technology (ICT) has influenced most aspects of human lives and it is considered a great support for teaching and learning. The present study examined how ICT is currently integrated into learning English at Islamic Azad University, Isfahan (Khorasgan) Branch, Iran. A descriptive-qualitative design was used to investigate the research questions and the study benefited from a questionnaire including close ended items. The study was conducted at IAUKB with total number of 113 BA students, MA students, and PhD candidates majoring in English Language Teaching, English Language Translation, and Linguistics. The answers were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square. The findings of the study revealed that IAUKB students were generally well equipped with ICT devices, they saw themselves skillful enough to use them, and they had positive attitudes towards ICT integration. They integrated ICT in their studies, they were engaged in surfing the Internet for information to support coursework and they mostly used ICT for their studying; however, they didn’t use ICT for language learning so much. The findings of the present study might help instructors and students to pave the way for more ICT integration in EFL settings and classrooms.

The paper at hand presents a research study, carried out in three public high schools in Rabat, Morocco, which aims at exploring the perceptions of students and teachers as to the use of e-learning Learning tools in the language classroom, the challenges they meet and approaches to practically enhance the pedagogical use of e-learning tools in language teaching. The study, adopting qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, interviewed 30 English teachers and administered a five-point Likert scale questionnaire with 40 high school EFL learners. A coding system was used to analyze the qualitative data and the Microsoft Excel program was used for the quantitative data; the main techniques used here were percentages and mean scores. The study has come out with the findings that both the teachers and learners have the perception that ICT integration in EFL learning helps the latter control and determine their learning processes, that it paves the way for a diversification of a...

Previous Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) research has shown that technology is beneficial for promoting language learning, but some teachers neither use technology as an assisted tool nor integrate it into their language classrooms. It has also been argued that the integration of technology has been unsuccessful in Kuwait. This study aims to explore the factors influencing teachers’ use of technology in English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom in Kuwaiti government primary schools. More specifically, it aims to highlight factors promoting and hindering EFL teachers’ use of technology. For the purpose of this study, 55 questionnaire responses were collected from different primary school teachers in Kuwait, followed up with 15 semi-structured interviews. The study findings show that Kuwaiti primary school EFL teachers who participated in the current study demonstrated positive attitudes towards using technology and acknowledged the implementation of some cutting-edge t...

ICT as a medium for teaching is becoming more and more acknowledged. This paper takes a closer look at the benefits, as well as the barriers faced by teachers and students in integrating ICT tools in teaching and learning the English language in the classrooms. The integration of ICT will enable teachers to vary teaching and learning activities, to gradually change the teaching style to be more student-centred, to train students to have more active role in learning, and to access a huge range of authentic learning materials. Hence, some recommedations for action are proposed at the end.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been around for nearly a century, yet in recent years the rapid advancement and public access to AI applications and algorithms have led to increased attention to the role of AI in higher education. An equally important but overlooked topic is the study of AI teaching and learning in higher education. We wish to examine the overview of the study, pedagogical outcomes, challenges, and limitations through a systematic review process amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and public access to ChatGPT. Twelve articles from 2020 to 2023 focused on AI pedagogy are explored in this systematic literature review. We find in-depth analysis and comparison of work post-COVID and AI teaching and learning era is needed to have a more focused lens on the current state of AI pedagogy. Findings reveal that the use of self-reported surveys in a pre-and post-design form is most prevalent in the reviewed studies. A diverse set of constructs are used to conceptualize AI literacy and their associated metrics and scales of measure are defined based on the work of specific authors rather than a universally accepted framework. There remains work and consensus on what learning objectives, levels of thinking skills, and associated activities lead to the advanced development of AI literacy. An overview of the studies, pedagogical outcomes, and challenges are provided. Further implications of the studies are also shared. The contribution of this work is to open discussions on the overlooked topic of AI teaching and learning in higher education.
