To reduce latex flow during harvesting, from mid-morning to late afternoon. After picking, remove unwanted water sprouts from the trunk. When handling fruit, let the latex flow and coagulate by laying the fruit against a railing with the stalk down. Transport fruits in single layers, using dried banana leaves to prevent bruises and breaks. Avoid inserting sticks into the stem, as it promotes decay.

Post-harvest, remove immature or damaged fruits and grade the remaining ones according to size. Wash fruits with chlorinated water, drain them, and pack them in plastic containers or bamboo baskets for storage. Ripe fruits can be stored at specific temperatures and humidity levels, depending on the cultivar and maturity stage.

For pre-processing, fully ripen jackfruits at 24-27ºC or use ethylene gas for uniform ripening. To turn them into fruitlets, cut, deseed, and sort accordingly. Fruitless can be packed in polythene bags or containers and kept at 2ºC for three weeks. Pulp preparation involves crushing deseeded bulbs, adding sugar, drying, and storing at -20 – -22ºC.

Jackfruit Production Guide

Jackfruit scientifically known as Artocarpus heterophyllius, lam, locally known as “nangka” or “langka” is a favorite dessert of Filipinos. It is one of the most widely grown fruit crops in the Philippines. It was reported that this fruit is one of the famous in the world because it produces the largest edible fruit that weighs as much as 50kg.

Many people believe that the leaves of the jackfruit tree can cure skin diseases. The bast of the tree is utilized in making rope and clothing. Cebuanos use the wood of the jackfruit tree in making excellent guitars and ukeleles, that’s why jackfruit orchards are becoming increasingly popular in Cebu.

More and more farmers are becoming aware of the versatility of the jackfruit and they are exploring still other possible uses for it. Aside from food, the jackfruit is also used for commercial and noncommercial purposes. The fruit, trunk, leaves, and roots can be utilized for household use or can be processed commercially. The trunk can be used as lumber or building material. The leaves can be used as medicine, fodder for animals, and compost. It latex can be used as paste or glue. The seeds can be used as food, for human consumption, feeds or planting materials while the roots can be used as handle for farm implements.

Jackfruit grows best in deep, sandy loam to clay loam soils of medium fertility with good drainage. Fertility of the soils of medium fertility with good drainage. Fertility of the soil should be considered because of the rapid exhaustion of soil nutrients taken by the plants. The ideal pH of the soil for jackfruit ranges from 5 to 6.5. Jackfruit Varieties

Several varieties of jackfruit are grown in the Philippines, however, the most important cultivars are the Sinaba and Tinumbaga.

• Sinaba variety has thick flesh, small seed, and good eating quality. • Tinumbaga variety has thinner flesh, a stronger aroma, and sweeter taste than Sinaba.

PROPAGATION

Jackfruit is usually propagated by seeds or by asexual propagation. Farmers who propagate by seeds should select healthy, vigorous, and disease-resistant seeds from productive mother trees. A sexual propagation can be done by enriching or grafting. Among the grafting methods, cleft grafting appears to be the most effective as it is able to counter the devastating effects of a typhoon which usually destroys tall trees. A cleft grafted tree is high in genetic quality, grows short but strong in stature. It’s branches tend to spread sidewards.

Plant seeds in seedboxes or tin cans. Clear and clean the field at least one year before transplanting seedlings to a permanent site. A few weeks before planting, dig holes about 60 to 80 centimeters in diameter and 40 to 50 centimeters deep. When planting, fill holes with fertile surface soil instead of subsoil dug out of the holes.

Before transplanting, prune-two-thirds of the leaves of the seedlings. Cut leafy brnaches to prevent excessive moisture loss and take special care when transplanting because the jackfruit has a delicate root system.

Also, planting distance should be no less than 10 to 12 meters between trees. Remove all weeds within a radius of one meter around the tree. Prune trees regularly to remove unnecessary twigs and branches.

FERTILIZATION AND IRRIGATION

Growing seedlings need ample nitrogen fertilizer while bearing trees need regular applications of phosphorous and potash.

1.) In the absence of soil analysis, apply as basal either manure or compost at the rate of 3kgs per plant or 2 metric tons per hectare. One month after planting, apply 100-150g ammonium sulfate per tree. After six months, apply an equal amount of 100-150g ammonium sulfate and towards the end of the rainy season. Organic fertilizer is advisable to apply around the trees. When trees start bearing fruits and during the start of the rainy season, apply 1/2kg-2kg complete fertilizer and 200g-300g muriate or potash (0-0-60) per tree. Every six months thereafter, apply complete fertilizer at the rate of 1 1/2kg-3kg per tree.

2.) Water requirement is less critical in jackfruit production, however, irrigate the farm during extreme drought.

Periodic ring weeding and underbrush shall be done every three (3) months.

Prune trees at two (2) years of age. Cut the top of the main stem leaving 2-3 meters above the ground to regulate the height. Apply fungicide on resulting wounds. Pruning consists of the removal of small unproductive branches as well as diseased and insect-damaged ones. Since fruits are usually produced on the trunk and large branches, the removal of unwanted branches would give more light to the developing fruits.

In Thailand, a uniform system of pruning is followed, that is, by pruning the main trunk well above the bud union to induce the production of multiple branches close to the ground. Allow four or main branches to grow to carry the fruits, instead of distributing the heavy fruits on the main trunk and the smaller over to the side branches. This, system also opens the center of the tree for better light penetration and air movement.

PEST AND DISEASES

1.) Fruit fly – Like most fruit rrees, jackfruit is vulnerable to fruit fly infestation, a most destructive pest. The fruit fly lays its eggs under the skin of the fruit and which hatch in 5-6 days. The larvae work their way into the fruit, eventually causing rot and making it unfit for market. The larva comes out of the fruit and falls to the ground to pupate in the soil. An adult lays about 100 eggs in one oviposition.

To control – Wrap fruits with empty cement bags or jute sacks. Spray wrappers with pesticide to reduce fruit damage.

2.) Twig borer – Borers attack the twigs and cause the affected twigs to dry up. An adult borer is slight gray in color and about 2 cm long.

To control – Cut off all affected shoots and twigs and destroy them by burning before spraying the tree with the recommended insecticides with long residual effects. Spraying showed be done twice a month depending on the degree of infestation.

3.) Another common pest is the Bark borer.

To control – This pest remove the dead branches where it lays its eggs. Spray the recommended pesticides and bum affected twigs and dead branches.

4.) Jackfruit is also attacked by the Fungal pink disease, especially during the rainy season.

To prevent its spread, spray plants with sulphur fungicide at least twice a month during rainy season. Always prune and burn severely affected branches.

Jackfruit bears fruit at three years old. About 10 fruits can be harvested the first time the tree bears fruit.

The following are indicators of fruit ripeness:

• when the last leaf on the stalk turns yellow; • the fruit produces dull, hollow sounds when tapped; • its well-developed and widely spaced spines yield to moderate pressure.

The time to harvest depends on how the fruit is to be Jackfruitused. If it’s for home consumption, pick fruit when the rind is soft, emitting an aromatic odor, and when the leaf nearest the stalk turns yellow. At this stage, the flesh of the fruit is yellow-orange, shiny and juicy. If you plan to sell the fruit, pick it when mature but still firm and without aroma. At this stage, the flesh is pale-yellow and crisp.

Take extra care not to damage the fruit. When you cut the penduncle of the fruit with a sharp knife or sickle, be sure another person wearing hand gloves to protect his hands from spines will assist. When harvesting from tall trees, place the fruit in a sack to prevent it from falling to the ground. Tie a rope to the stalk, snap the fruit from the tree, and slowly lower the bundle to the ground.

Harvesting should be done at mid – morning to late afternoon to reduced latex flow because, at this time of the day, latex cells are less turgid. This would minimize latex stains which give the fruit an unsightly appearance. Remove the retained peduncle and unwanted water sprouts from the trunk after picking the fruit.

When handling the fruit, lay it against a railing with its stalk down to let the latex flow and coagulate. It is best to transport the fruits in single layers. Always put dried banana leaves between fruits and spread some on the container to prevent the fruits from getting bruises, scars, and breaks. Never insert a pointer stick into the fruit’s stem. Many people in the rural areas believe this technique hastens ripening but this has no basis. A cut on the stem only serves as an entry point for decay-producing organisms.

The fruit usually weighs from five to 15 kilogram; bigger ones weigh more. Fruit experts or pomologists grade the fruit according to size: large, at least 20kg; medium, at least 15kg but no more than 20kg; and small, at least 8kg but not more than 15kg. Another way of grading jackfruit is according to condition. Grade No. 1 means that the fruit is fairly well-formed, free from damage by discoloration or scars, cuts, skin breaks, diseases, and insects. Grade No. 2 means that the fruit has no specific shape, though free from cuts, skin breaks, insects, and diseases.

Post-harvest operations

1. Remove immature, over-ripe, damaged and misshapen fruits. 2. Grade the remaining fruits according to size as follows: – Large: weighing 16 kg and above – Medium: weighing 8 kg to 16 kg 3. Wash fruits using chlorinated water (100 ppm) to remove dirt, latex stains and any field contamination. 4. Drain fruits properly to remove excess moisture from the surface of the fruit for further processing or storing.

Packaging and storage of fresh fruits

Graded and washed fruits are packed into plastic containers or bamboo baskets for storage. • Freshly harvested ripe fruits can be stored for 4 to 5 days at 25-35ºC. • Fruits can be kept for 2 to 6 weeks at 11-13ºC and relative humidity of 85-95%, depending on cultivar and maturity stage. • Jackfruits stored at temperatures below 12ºC before transfer to higher temperatures show injury due to chilling. This includes dark-brown discoloration of the skin, pulp browning, a deterioration in flavour and increased susceptibility to decay.

Prior to the pre- or minimal processing, jackfruits should be ripened fully to achieve optimum aroma, sweetness, taste and eating quality. • Keep mature jackfruits at 24-27ºC. They will ripen in 3 to 4 days. However, uneven ripening is a major problem in the natural ripening process, especially for large-sized fruits. • To achieve more uniform ripening, expose fruits to 50 ppm ethylene for 24 hours at 25ºC. The fruits ripen 3 to 4 days after the treatment with ethylene gas when kept at room temperature.

Pre-processing into fruitlets

1. Cut fruits in half lengthwise. Latex may exude from the cut surfaces when extracting the flesh. Coat hands, knives and work surfaces with vegetable oil to make clean-up easier. 2. Carve out the sticky central core. 3. Scoop out the individual fruitlets (bulbs). 4. Sort bulbs according to the required size, maturity and colour. Only full bulbs, (not half or partly cut) are recommended for retailing. 5. Cut the end of the bulbs to remove the seeds according to consumers’ preference. 6. Pack fruitlets for storage for direct consumption.

Packaging and storage of jackfruit fruitlets

• Jackfruit bulbs are packed in polythene bags which are heat-sealed or in polypropylene containers with lids. They can be kept at 2ºC for 3 weeks. • Maintain the chilled temperature of 2ºC throughout the distribution process to avoid deterioration.

Pre-processing into pulp

1. Crush de-seeded jackfruit bulbs using a blender. 2. Add 40-45 g of powdered sugar to every 100 g of smashed pulp and mix thoroughly. 3. Dry mixture in a hot air drier at 80-85ºC until moisture content reaches 20-22%. 4. Place pulp in plastic containers and seal. 5. Freeze pulp and store for further processing.

Packaging and storage of pulp

• Pre-processed pulp is packed in polythene bags or in plastic containers. It can be kept for more than one year when stored at -20 – -22ºC.

Alabama is one of the premier farming areas of the eastern United States. This creates an intensely competitive environment with a large number of industry participants. Since almost all of the produce is considered to be commodities, and large scale buyers are more consolidated than the farmers themselves, overall margins are small and rivalries for wholesaler contracts are strong. Competitive threats come from three main segments:

  • Imported vegetables of lower quality.>
  • Mississippi pound raised vegetables.
  • Alabama vegetable producers.

Direct competition in the individual buyers market segment comes from three farms in the immediate area including the Anniston farm, Organics-To-You farm, and the Terrance Livingston vegetable farm. Each of these competitors has produce stands as well as selling to local farmers’ markets. However, with the exception of Organics-To-You Farm, none of the others focus on a niche market and depend heavily on federal subsidies.

Marketing & Sales

Marketing plan.

Farmers Group will initially market and supply its products to target customers. The company is further exploring marketing opportunities on the Internet. To this extent, the company would like to set up a website to market its products.

The company will utilize aggressive advertising strategies to further market its products. These strategies include the promotion of products through the sponsoring of spots on cooking shows and exhibitions, and also engaging prominent chefs to help promote this fledgling industry.

At Farmers Group, the sales process is primarily the same for vegetables as it is for composting products, in that both products will be mainly sold through wholesale marketing. As in the past, live shipments will be delivered by contract carriers in special oxygenated tanks carrying 8,000 vegetables or more, and will be continued as demanded. Farmers Group’s bagged manure products will be delivered and unloaded in sizable wholesale quantities by the pallet.

Smaller, more local orders will significantly increase the overall sales when the 300-450 live vegetables carrying tank system is put into service late in 2000 or early in 2001.

The company’s average sales cycle from first contact to closing of the sale is approximately 3 to 12 days for vegetable products. Farmers Group plans to shorten this cycle. Furthermore, the company estimates that from first contact to sale conclusion, the cycle for fresh strawberries will run 3 days or less. Composted products sale cycle should run from 3 to 12 days.

Locations & Facilities

The farm is located in Calhoun county approximately 4.5 miles outside of Jasper.

The operation will utilize:

  • One large greenhouse, enclosing the vegetable area.
  • Horticultural greenhouse.
  • Filters, water treatment devices.
  • Backwash facilities.
  • Outdoor vegetable facilities.
  • Business office building.

An additional portion of the operation will be the manure composting facility. Local and regional dairy operations have trouble with manure accumulations, and the company hopes to enter into contracts in removing the manure. Farmers Group will then turn this into a saleable product. The company plans to supply the region’s nursery outlets with a top-quality, premium garden and soil amendment product for area horticulture.

Currently, Farmers Group is conducting research to test certain clay-sand-manure mixture levels to obtain better, cheaper bedding and agronomic soil mixtures that are more effective than the standard used in the industry in Alabama (Pine bark mulch-composted).

Equipment & Tools

The state-of-the-art vegetable equipment starting up in the new location utilizes revolutionary harvest designs that:

  • Allow faster, longer growth
  • Cut the harvest labor by over 80%
  • Decrease loss in weight gain, and
  • Eliminate weight loss from shock.

Farmers Group’s first line of production will be the green vegetable and red vegetable. During the summer months Farmers Group will be growing carrots, romaine lettuce, leeks, red onions, summer squash, and spinach. In the fall, production will center on pumpkins, winter squash, globe beets and winter greens. With the growth of the popular organic food niche, and the federal government’s new organic labeling policy, Farmers Group will focus its produce on the intermediate organic label. This means that approximately 70% of the food production process will be organic and all foods produced by Farmers Group will be eligible for the "contains organic ingredients" label. The company’s farm will have a capacity sufficient to produce in excess of 200,000 lbs. of vegetables per year.

Farmers Group’s strategy is a combination of the two technologies during the cool winter months which will allow the utilization of normally wasted space in the greenhouses for the high price winter greens production. This will allow double cultivation of the greenhouses with almost no additional heating necessary in this climate.

Future Products

In the meantime, the company would like to explore the possibilities of crayfish production. Farmers Group believes this to be a high revenue venture with retail prices running in excess of $15.00 per pound in most places. The company also believes that if crayfish production is successful then it could become the number one endeavor of Farmers Group.

Currently there is a defunct fish farming production facility with all the necessary capital equipment approximately two miles from the current farm. Purchase of this facility would allow Farmers Group to begin production and to capitalize on this higher margin product. What makes this most attractive is the two ventures have significant joint cost potential, allowing for a reduction in marginal costs for all products and creation of real economies of scale that would provide Farmers Group with a competitive advantage.

Jackfruit ( Artocarpus heterophyllus ) is one of the most remunerative and important fruits of India. It belongs to the family Moraceae. In this article we will learn about jackfruit plantation.

Originally, jackfruit is a native of India and presently cultivated throughout the tropical low land in both the hemispheres. It is commonly grown in Burma and Malaysia and to a certain extent in Brazil.

Wild jackfruit is found in Western Ghats of India. In India, jackfruit plantation is mostly done in Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Orissa, Kerela and Tamil Nadu. Its regular plantations are found only in U.P. where marginal orchards exist.

In other parts of the country, it is rarely grown in plantations but preferred very much in homesteads or as a shade tree or as a mixed crop. It grows throughout South India up to an elevation of 2,400 meters.

Jackfruit Plantation: Uses and Composition

Its fruits are used both for culinary purposes and as table fruit but it is mainly used for culinary purposes. Tender fruits appear in the market in spring and continue till late summer as popular vegetable. Since common vegetables are scarce and costly at that time of the year, jackfruit enjoys a high demand and premier price.

Ripe fruits are very sweet and have high nutritive value. The fruit contains minerals and vitamins A and C. Some people believe that jack fruit causes digestive ailments if taken regularly.

The fruits are also used for preparation of pickles, dehydrated leather, thin papad, soft drinks like nectar, squash and to some extent for canning purposes.

The rind of the fruit is rich in protein. Extract from the rind can be used for jelly making. The skin of the fruit and leaves are excellent cattle feed. Jackfruit tree is a valuable timber for making furniture as it is rarely attacked by white ants.

The latex from the bark contains resin. Sometimes it is used to plug holes in earthern vats and baskets. Thus the tree is useful in many ways to the mankind. The composition of edible portion is given as below:

Soil and Climate for Jackfruit Plantation

Proper Jackfruit plantation requires rich and well drained sandy loam soil. Soil drainage is of great importance to jack fruit as is evidenced by the sudden decline of numerous trees in the areas suffering from a sudden rise of water level.

Jack fruit tree can not tolerate moisture stress but presence of lime and chlorine is tolerable to some extent. Areas near the river beds are ideally suitable for its cultivation.

Warm humid plains are suitable for jack fruit cultivation and it flourishes in humid hill slopes up to an elevation of 1,500 meters. Quality of fruit deteriorates in higher altitudes but grows satisfactorily in arid and warm plains of South India.

Cold weather and frost are harmful to its cultivation. Hot desiccating winds in summer also adversely affect the growth of trees.

Jackfruit Varieties

Being a cross pollinated and mostly seed propagated, the existing population of jackfruit consists of innumerable trees, differing from each other in shape, size, density of tubercles, rind colour, bulb size, fibre content, fruit quality and maturity.

This provides unlimited scope for clone selection of promising strains for various purposes. Many types available under various local names have been originated through clone selection.

Gulabi (rose-scented), Champa (flavour like that of champak flower), Hazaric (bearing large number of fruits), etc. are few examples.

However, distinct varieties are not available in jackfruit. Cultivated types are broadly classed into two groups by consumers, namely, soft flesh and firm flesh.

A. Soft flesh

When fully ripe, the fruits yield to the thrust of a finger easily. The pulp is very juicy and soft. The taste varies from very sweet, sweet acidic to insipid.

B. Firm flesh

The rind does not yield to the thrust of finger easily. The pulp is firm and crispy. The taste is variable in degree of sweetness. Some distinct types are capable of maintaining their individuality even after propagation by seeds. These are:

i. Rudrakshi

It produces roundish fruits of the size of the pummelo. The rind is smooth, less spiny than the common jackfruit and the perianth is fleshy but the quality is inferior.

ii. Singapore or Ceylon jack

It has been introduced to India by Sri Lanka. This is highly precocious type, producing fruits after approximately 2½ years of planting the seedling.

The size of fruit is like common jack fruit. Some trees produce light off-season crop between September and December.

Jackfruit Propagation

It is generally propagated by seeds and this leads to immense variation and prolonged juvenility. The seeds are sown immediately after extraction either in beds, polythene bags, earthen pots or in coconut husk pieces containing enough soil to cover the seeds.

Heavier seeds should be used for sowing purposes. The seeds should be soaked 24 hours in water and thereafter treated either with 25-50 ppm solution of NAA or 500 ppm gibberellic acid which results in improved germination and enhanced seedling growth.

Propagation by vegetative means offers handicap. Different methods of grafting have not given encouraging results or success.

However, inarching and layering have been found effective in multiplying the jack fruit and it should be done from June to August.

The poor success in budding of jackfruit is probably due to severe oozing out of latex from the freshly cut surfaces. Under North Indian conditions, cent per cent success has been reported by patch budding, when it is performed from mid-May to mid-August after collecting buds from a defoliated shoots.

In recent years, epicotyl grafting has also given encouraging results. It has been observed that often there is a poor establishment of air layered shoots in their permanent places because of their non-fibrous and brittle root system.

Stool layering has proved better as there is no problem of establishment in field due to the presence of fibrous roots. The lifting of seedlings from beds as well as the transplanting of the grafts from the pot to the field should be done with care, as the seedling plants have pronounced tap root system.

Any injury to roots or breaking of earth ball will lead to the poor establishment of the plants at their permanent position. Direct sowing of seeds in the field and budding in situ from promising strains have been found beneficial to ensure better establishment of plants.

Jackfruit Plantation

For jackfruit plantation, 1 x 1 x 1 m pits are dug at least 10 days before planting. About 30 kg well rotten farmyard manure and 500 g super phosphate are mixed with the soil of each pit and the pit is refilled. Approximately, 2 g/litre chloropyriphos should be applied in the pit to avoid insect attack.

In situ planting of 3 to 4 seed per pit leads to stronger plants. But nursing and raising of a large number of plants in this way is difficult. After planting, the soil is pressed firmly to avoid waterlogging in pits during rainy season.

This is important for jackfruit plantation as the jackfruit can not withstand waterlogging. The best time for planting grafts or seedling is June to August.

Prolonged dry weather after planting may lead to the death of plants. The tap root should not be disturbed while planting, to avoid damage to the plants.

The square system of planting is commonly practiced for planting but hexagonal system may be followed in less fertile soils. In fertile soils, a spacing of 12 x 12 m accommodating 70 plants per hectare will suffice for this fruit crop.

On average soil, trees may be planted 11 m apart. High density planting can be practiced in lighter and poorer soils.

Care of Jackfruit Plants

The leaves of jackfruit are favourite feed for goats. Thus, the young plants are frequently damaged by stray goats and cattle unless adequately protected by providing gabions for about two years. Gabions may have to be replaced after a year.

Hand watering of young plants during one or two summers is necessary for assured survival and good growth of plants. Frequent weeding and mulching are necessary to achieve normal plant growth.

Fertilizer application

In Jackfruit plantation, an application of 75:60:50 g of NPK per year respectively up to 8 years and thereafter, the dose of 8 th year taken as the constant dose for subsequent years, should be followed in jackfruit trees.

It has been observed that the young fruits (0.5-1.0 kg) suffer from browning and mature fruits show the symptoms of developing spongy and corky tissues along with whitish pockets in the fruit mesocarp.

The problem is found only in Tarai and Bhabar regions of Uttar Pradesh. This malady is believed to be caused due to lack of boron in the soil which can be controlled by spraying the trees with 1 % solution of Borax at monthly intervals starting from January to May or by adding borax @ 250 g per tree along with fertilizer application.

Irrigation for Jackfruit Plantation

In India, hardly any irrigation is given to jackfruit. The tree is sensitive to drought, therefore, irrigation during dry periods is considered essential in arid regions for normal plant growth.

Generally, ring system of irrigation should be adopted for irrigating jackfruit trees as it also economises the use of water.

For young orchards, hand watering is necessary during first two to three years. The frequency of irrigation will depend on the soil moisture condition.

Intercropping

It starts bearing after 5 to 7 years of its transplanting. Therefore, during this period the interspaces of the orchard should be properly utilized. Suitable crops should be grown every year till the trees reach bearing stage.

When the soil moisture is not a limiting factor, vegetable crop like okra, brinjal, chilli, tomato, and pulses like moong, gram etc. can be conventially grown. These crops will also improve the nitrogen status of the soil.

Insect and Pest

There are about 7-8 insects attacking jackfruit but three of them are of economic importance. Two common pests are described here:

i. Shoot and trunk borer

It is often a serious pest in Assam, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. It bores into the tender shoots and buds. After sometimes the affected parts become dried and ultimately they (buds) drop off.

To control this pest, application of Sevin 50 % @ 4 g/litre of water by spray is advisable. Affected parts should be nipped off and destroyed.

ii. Brown weevil

It is also reported to bore into the tender buds and shoots. They may be controlled by destroying fallen fruits and buds and by collecting grubs and adults.

In addition, mealy bug and jack scale are also found to attack jack fruit which can be controlled by use of a suitable contact insecticide.

Common Diseases for Jackfruit

Soft rot and pink disease are common diseases in jackfruit.

i. Soft rot

It is a fungal disease found in jackfruit. In this disease, male flowers and small fruits are badly affected, whereas female flowers and mature fruits escape this disease. Humid atmosphere facilitates the spread of this disease. To control this disease, spray of Bordeaux mixture (0.4 %) in the month of January, February and March at an interval of 21 days should be done.

ii. Pink disease

Pink disease in Jackfruit mainly occurs in the Western Ghat and Niligiri regions of India. White or pink spots are formed on the affected branches. It gradually covers the whole branch. When the disease becomes serious, peeling of the bark takes place.

All the affected branches should be severed and Bordeaux paste be painted on cut portions. To check the further spread of the disease, spray of Bordeaux mixture (2.75 kg copper sulphate + 1.8 kg slaked lime + 200 litres of water) should be sprayed.

Flowering and Fruiting

Jackfruit is a monoecious fruit tree. Large number of flowers is borne on club-shaped rachis. The female spikes are borne on footstalks while male spikes appear both on the footstalks as well as the terminal branchlets.

Footstalks bearing female spikes are vigorous and have granular surface, while the male spikes are in the central and top region of the tree with thinner stalks and smoother surface.

Sex of a spike can be easily identified when it is small. The length and diameter of female spikes are much more than those of the males. Surface of a young male spike is smooth, while in the case of a female flower it is granular.

Both pollination and fertilization completes within 3 to 6 days after the opening of flowers (anthesis).Irrespective of method of propagation, the tree starts bearing from the 7 th or 8 th year after transplanting.

The flowers generally start appearing in December and continue upto March and the fruit ripens in summer.

At higher altitudes, jack fruit growth may continue upto September. Occasionally, though rare, off-season flowering may be noticed. The axis of inflorescence, the multiple fruit, botanically called sorosis, the pericarp around each seed and the fleshy perianth are edible.

Jackfruit is a multipurpose fruit tree. It can be cooked as vegetable, ripe fruits used for table purpose and green mature fruit can be used for making pickles. The fruits develop during spring and summer. The fruits become ready for harvest in June or early July.

If the flowers on all sides are not pollinated, the fruit does not develop normally. The size is small and the shape may be irregular in less pollinated fruits.

However, lack of pollination may lead to the drop of female spike.

Jackfruit Harvesting and Yield

Bearing in jackfruit starts from the 7 th to 8 th year when a few fruits may develop, while the tree reaches its peak bearing stage within 15 th to 16 th years after planting.

Tender fruits are harvested for use as vegetables during early spring and summer until the seeds harden. The fruit matures towards the end of summer in June. Period of fruit development is February to June.

Harvesting is done by cutting the stalks carrying the fruits. Normally, a tree bears a few to 250 fruits annually at this stage. The weight of the fruit varies widely depending on the type. Individual jackfruit may weigh upto 50 kg.

Jackfruit Storage and Marketing

In Jackfruit plantation, storage is also very important. Jackfruit has a good storage quality because of its thick peel.

Jackfruit storage life of about 6 weeks is expected when the temperature is 0.1 to 12.7 0 C and humidity between 85 to 90 per cent.

The initial quality and stage of maturity at harvest are important factors on which the storage life depends. Because of its good storage life, it can be transported to distant places for marketing. It does not need any packing or wrapping before sending to markets.

The largest fruit in the world, jackfruit are a Southeast Asian delicacy that have a sweet, mild flavor and flesh that mimics pulled pork. With a lifespan of over 100 years, a jackfruit seedling needs plenty of space, water, warmth and tender care to flourish into a fruit-producing tree. Growing a jackfruit tree can be a lifelong commitment, but one that will reward you with delicious 40-pound fruit!

Germinating the Jackfruit Seed

Step 1 Consider whether you have the appropriate space and environment for a jackfruit tree.

  • Jackfruit trees are not viable at 4000 feet above sea level or higher, and they do not survive well in areas of high or sustained wind. [1] X Research source
  • The jackfruit tree is too large to make a suitable container plant, so must be planted outdoors.

Step 2 Purchase jackfruit seeds from a local Asian market or specialized gardening store.

  • It is possible to harvest jackfruit seeds from a fully ripe jackfruit. If your local grocery or fruit market sells jackfruit, you can remove the seeds from the pulp and then rinse the seeds in warm water to remove any stickiness. [3] X Research source
  • If you purchase jackfruit seeds online, try to buy them from a reputable organic gardening vendor – jackfruit seeds are only viable for around 4 weeks, so you need to be careful who and where you buy them from. Also consider how long the shipping will take.
  • Make sure to buy numerous jackfruit seeds, as you will be germinating multiple.

Step 3 Soak the jackfruit seeds in water for 24 hours.

Growing Your Jackfruit Seedling

Step 1 Fill your seedling pot with organic potting mix.

  • When using potting mix, always wear gardening gloves and ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area. [6] X Research source
  • Premixed potting soil can be purchased at gardening stores, online, or you can make your own organic soil.

Step 2 Sow at least 3 seeds into the prepared pot.

  • You need to plant at least 3 seeds in case one or more of the seeds is not viable. You can plant more seeds in the pot, but consider that the more seeds you plant, the more will be competing for resources.

Step 3 Water the seeds.

  • Too much water can cause the jackfruit seeds to rot, so be careful not to overwater.
  • To see whether your seeds need watering, place your finger into the soil (up to the first knuckle). If it isn’t wet, water the seeds. [8] X Research source

Step 4 Keep the potted seeds in a warm and sunny environment.

  • Jackfruit seeds will germinate well in a humid environment such as a greenhouse. If this is not possible and the weather outside is too cool, an indoor heat lamp is an alternative option to keep your seeds growing healthily.

Step 5 Choose the healthiest seedling to nourish after they’ve started germinating.

  • Avoid using seedlings that look weak, spindly or have grown near the edge of the pot. A seedling that has grown in the middle of the pot will have a more fully developed root system.

Transplanting Your Jackfruit Tree

Step 1 Transplant the young jackfruit plant once it has gained four leaves.

  • Jackfruit seedlings can be sensitive and do not like to be disturbed. Make sure the seedling looks strong enough before considering transplanting it. [10] X Research source

Step 2 Choose a spacious, sunny, and sheltered area away from other trees.

  • Avoid planting the tree near your house since the roots will grow out and could cause damage.
  • Find an area that is sheltered from strong wind so that your tree can develop safely.

Step 3 Clear the surrounding area of roots and weeds.

  • If necessary, you may need to plough the soil first to ensure it is soft and fertile.

Step 4 Dig a hole for your jackfruit plant.

  • To check if the soil is well-draining, check to see whether it has any sand or clay. If it does not, you can make your soil drain better by mixing in sand or compost.
  • To give your jackfruit a boost start with natural nutrients, add compost to the soil.

Step 5 Remove the plant gently from the pot.

  • Try not to pull the plant out, as it may rip out part of its root system.
  • If the roots have wrapped around the dirt to match the shape of the pot, use your fingers to gently tease the roots so that they are facing outwards. This will help them grow down into the surrounding soil.

Step 6 Place the plant in the hole and create a mound around the base.

  • Pat the soil so that it is solid, but be careful not to pack the soil in too tightly.
  • Water the plant immediately. Thoroughly water the jackfruit plant to help it recover and get established in its new surroundings.

Looking After Your Jackfruit Tree

Step 1 Water your jackfruit tree every day, but be careful not to over-water.

  • Jackfruit trees are sensitive to drought, so if your area is particularly dry, water your tree twice a day.
  • Water your jackfruit even in winter. Jackfruit do not have a natural winter dormancy, so you need to keep the plant’s growing conditions warm, bright and humid. [16] X Research source

Step 2 Feed your young jackfruit fertilizer every six months.

  • Every 6 months for the first 2 years, double the amount of fertilizer you use with the same mix. [17] X Research source
  • Once your tree is 2 years old, growing jackfruit trees should receive 1 kilogram (2.2 lb) of a fertilizer with a 4:2:4:1 ratio.

Step 3 Protect the plant by removing weeds and using an organic pesticide.

  • If you can, pull weeds out by hand to avoid using chemicals that could damage your tree.
  • You can purchase a natural pesticide from your local gardening store or make your own .
  • To save your jackfruit from fruit flies and birds, cover the growing fruit with paper bags or netting.

Step 4 Prune the jackfruit tree regularly to keep it below 20 feet (6.1 m).

  • When the tree grows above 12 feet (3.7 m), reduce the height by 4 feet to encourage outward growth.
  • Remove any dead wood to keep the tree in good health.
  • While the tree is still growing, pinch off any flowers that the plant produces to help promote growth. [20] X Research source

Step 5 Pick the jackfruit after 3 to 4 years.

  • Ripe jackfruit can be eaten alone or in recipes. The pulp of the fruit smells sweet, like a mixture of pineapple and banana. [22] X Research source
