Thesis Submission

The thesis will be assessed by three External Experts nominated by the Vice Chancellor from a list of seven experts provided by the Supervisor/s through the School Board. In the case of MPhil, the dissertation will be evaluated by one external examiner nominated by the Vice Chancellor from a list of at least five experts submitted by the supervisor through the School Board. The Examiner/s' reports should be submitted using the provided format.

Course work

When your Research Project is approved, the Doctoral Committee may also require you to complete Course work that relates to the research's focus areas and research methodology. The specifics of this Course Work, how it will be evaluated, and the schedule for teaching it will be provided by the Research Programme Coordinator. Mostly, Course Work is assigned to candidates applying for admission to the MPhil program. It's also assigned to PhD candidates who haven't completed an MPhil. However, the Doctoral Committee may assign Course Work to PhD candidates who have already completed an MPhil as well.

Viva Examinations

For Ph.D. candidates, the viva-voce examination will be conducted at IGNOU. A panel will oversee this examination, consisting of an external examiner appointed by the Vice Chancellor, along with your principal supervisor who acts as the convener. The Director of the concerned department will be the panel's Chairperson. The date, venue, and thesis topic along with a brief abstract will be communicated to the Research Unit. This information will also be made widely available to encourage broader participation in the session. To successfully complete the MPhil program, you need to secure a minimum of 50% marks in each course, 50% in your dissertation work, and 50% in the viva-voce examination.

Instructions pertaining to Reservation of Seats, Fees, general eligibility criteria and Exam pattern for PhD Entrance Test – 2023

Submission of application for PhD Programme will be online only. The candidate can only apply for one Programme as the Entrance Test shall be conducted for all the Programmes on the same day.
Application Fee for submission of online application is Rs 1000.
Application fee is non-refundable.
The number of seats to be advertised in different categories (GEN/OBC/SC/ST/EWS) is as per the Reservation Policy for Research Degree Programmes and DOPT,Govt of India .norms amended from time to time. Appendix II of the Information Brochure may be referred in this regard.
No request for change in reservation category, shall be entertained once the application has been successfully submitted.
Five percent (5%) seats shall be reserved for Persons with Disabilities (with not less than 40% disability). However such candidates shall be adjusted against the appropriate category (Gen/SC/ST/OBC/EWS) to which they belong (Ref.Annexure II of Information Brochure 2023).
Candidates awarded with fellowship/scholarship in UGC-NET/UGC- CSIR NET/GATE/CEED and similar National level tests, as per the validity specified by the regulatory bodies, shall be exempted from Entrance Test and their selection will be based on interview. These candidates shall be considered as Category- A. Such candidates have to upload their valid fellowship award letter from the concerned implementing / awarding agency.
For Category A Candidates , interview shall carry 100% weightage. All eligible candidates from Category A will be called for the interview.
For Category B Candidates , the Entrance Test shall carry a weightage of 70% and 30% weightage shall be given to the interview. Those who secure at least 50% marks in the Entrance Test (45% marks in case of SC/ST/OBC (Non Creamy layers) / Differently abled persons and EWS) will be shortlisted for the interview in order of merit subject to the maximum limit of five times of the available seats.

Stage II: Interview:

Eligible candidates from Category A & Category B shall be called for interview before the Discipline Specific Admission committee. Information in this regard shall be uploaded on the University website. The respective disciplines/ schools will communicate regarding the requirement for the interview.
The interview shall have three components comprising Research Methodology (40%) Subject domain (40%) and Communication Skills (20%).
Admission to the Ph.D Degree Programmes is strictly on merit, based on the performance in the Entrance Test and Interview taken together.
A candidate will be eligible for admission and registration for the PhD programme, on the fulfillment of the following conditions :
Candidates who have completed:
A 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade is allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision as per the decision of the UGC from time to time. Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.

In case, a candidate does not meet these minimum eligibility criteria and appears in the written examination, it is at the candidate’s own risk and cost, and if at any stage, it is found that the minimum eligibility requirements are not fulfilled, the admission, if granted, shall be cancelled ipso facto.

Syllabus and Question paper

a) The syllabus of the Entrance Test is as per the ‘University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations, 2022 comprising 50% on Research methodology and 50% on specific subject. b) The question paper shall have questions consisting of 50% on research methodology and 50% on specific subject .

The number of seats that are reserved for different categories (GEN/ OBC/ SC/ ST/ EWS) is as per the reservation policy for research degree programmes and DOPT, Government of India norms amended from time to time.
5% of the seats shall be reserved for Persons with Disabilities (with not less than 40% disability). These candidates shall be adjusted against the appropriate category (GEN/ SC/ ST/ OBC/ EWS) to which they belong.
The application form for the IGNOU PhD admission 2024 will be done online. Entrance examination is compulsory for all candidates including MPhil/ NET/ JRF for admission to PhD. No exemption from appearing for the entrance exam is allowed.
The application fee for submitting the online application form is INR 1000 and the fee amount is non-refundable.
No request for change in category shall be entertained once the application form has been successfully submitted.
Eligibility for appearing in the entrance exam is subject to the candidate fulfilling the minimum eligibility requirements as prescribed in the IGNOU regulations for PhD courses.
In case, a candidate does not meet the required minimum eligibility criteria and appears in the written exam, is at the candidate’s own risk and cost, and if at any stage, it is found that the minimum eligibility requirements are not fulfilled, the admission, if granted, shall be cancelled then and there.
The weightage of the entrance exam is 70% and 30% weightage is for the Interview.
In the entrance exam, 50% is the qualifying mark for unreserved category candidates and for SC/ ST/ OBC/ EWS /PWD, the qualifying mark is 45%.
The IGNOU PhD admission is strictly based on merit that is the performance of the candidate in the entrance exam and Interview taken together.

IGNOU University distance education degree courses have a set of eligibility criteria to be followed by the students to get admitted into their dream distance education course. Check out the pointers and cross-verify them with the student's eligibility.

The applicant must have the 10th and 12th mark sheets or an equivalent certificate from a recognized institution with at least a 60% mark average.
The students must have 55% or more (minimum in general), and 50% for SC/ST/OBC applicants to apply for the M.Phil degree program.
For the Bachelor's courses, the students should have 10th and 12th mark sheets with a transfer certificate and code of conduct certificate.
The student must have completed an undergraduate program with at least 55% marks to be eligible to apply for a post-graduation certificate in the same field.
The students who apply for a PhD degree must be a postgraduate or have an M.Phil degree, with at least 55% marks.

The IGNOU distance education admission process is for all the courses offered by the university. The students can follow the steps carefully on how to apply to IGNOU for IGNOU distance education courses to get admitted into the university.

Step 1: Visit the official website of IGNOU admission to fill out the online application form.
Step 2: Click on the “new registration” button.
Step 3: Fill out the essential information for the student registration and verify the student's mobile number with an OTP.
Step 4: Using this new login credential, login into the registration portal as a registered user once again.

Step 5: Fill out the essential information asked in the form and upload all the necessary documents in the form of scanned images in PNG, JPEG or JPG.
Step 6: Pay the application fee of INR 300 (for general) and Rs. 200 (for SC/ST) through online modes like net banking, UPI or credit or debit cards.
Step 7: Download the confirmation details for the fee submission and download the application form.

The university conducts the IGNOU PhD Entrance Examination once a year to start the process of IGNOU PhD Admission for the year 2024. The admission to the Phd programs is strictly based on a performance achieved in the PhD Entrance Examination and Interview. Thereafter, IGNOU will release the final list of shortlisted candidates who are selected to get admission in selected disciplines.

Therefore, the candidates who want to take admission to IGNOU PhD programs in any of the available disciplines should get to know about the eligibility, selection process, and exam structure.

IGNOU PhD 2024 Highlights

It is to inform all candidates that both category students have to attend the classes at the allotted centre to accomplish their course work given by the university. The student must have 80% attendance in the course work to be eligible for the term-end examination.

Candidate must have a master’s degree completed from a recognized institution with a minimum of 55% marks.

How to Apply for IGNOU PhD Entrance Exam 2024?

Students can easily apply for Ph.D. Entrance Examination through online mode. Interested candidates have to click on the given application link and then click on the “Online Application Form” link for Ph.D. July 2023. After the click, you will go to the registration section where you have to click on New Registration to begin your registration procedure.
Candidates have to fill all sections including the Registration and Application Form without any spelling mistakes
Once you fill in the above details, it is mandatory to upload your recent passport-size scanned photograph and digital signature. A scanned photograph must be less than 200 KB in size and Signature must be less than 30 KB. After uploading, you have to re-verify your application with all the details that you provided to the university before submitting it. You can also get a print of your Application form before proceeding with payment.
After checking your application, candidates have to pay their application fee by online mode. After completion of payment, you will get a payment receipt so keep it safe with you for any future reference.
After successful payment, you will receive a notification or confirmation via SMS or through your registered email ID. If you didn’t get any confirmation then, please contact the IGNOU Ph.D. support team as fast as possible.
Candidates have to note down their Application Number to login into the Ph.D. entrance portal to download their Admit Card and Result in the future.

It is compulsory to register yourself to fill out your application form online. Once you have paid your fees for the entrance exam will not be refundable to the candidate in any circumstances. There are no documents to needed submit while filling out an application form for Ph.D. All original documents will have to be produced at the time of the Interview taken by the university.

IGNOU PhD Entrance Exam Structure 2024

We can understand that many of the students are confused regarding the syllabus and structure of the Ph.D. Entrance Examination. The Ph.D. entrance test will be based on MCQs and there will be a total of 100 questions will be asked in the paper and each question will have 1 mark.

What Is IGNOU Distance Education?

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) named after the former Prime Minister of India, Indra Gandhi. It starts with a budget of Rs 20 million and it is one of the largest open universities in the world, formed in the year 1985. IGNOU is offering 227 programs in 21 schools and 67 regional centers in India.

It has its main center in New Delhi and it is NCTE, AICTE approved. IGNOU distance education offers numerous UG, PG courses, and Diploma & Certificate courses like BA, BSW, BCA, MCA, M. COM, M. Sc, Event Management, Environmental Studies, Information Security, Performing Arts, Tourism Studies, etc.

Initially, it starts with two academic programs that are Diploma in Management and Diploma in Distance Education with only 4,528 students. Today it has a strength of about 810 faculty members, 574 academic staff, 33,212 academic counselors.
