About research degrees

A research degree gives you the opportunity to complete a piece of original research with expert guidance from world-class academics.

Find the right course for you

You might already have a specific supervisor, department or project in mind, or maybe you're thinking more about an area of study rather than a specific project. Whichever route you're considering we'll help you find the right opportunity for you. Here are some starting points:

  • Find a supervisor:   look for academics  who work in your field. Contact your potential supervisor(s) to discuss the research area you’re interested in
  • Find a project:  visit your  department of interest's web pages  to see if there is a funded advertised project which fits your interests
  • Contact your potential supervisor:  if you’re generating your own research project,  seek guidance  on its suitability and find out about  funding opportunities .

You may be entitled to a  UK government loan to help fund your doctoral studies. Applications are now open.

  • York Graduate Research School

As a research student at York, you'll be supported by the York Graduate Research School . The School co-ordinates training and development, careers and administrative support. It ensures your supervision and training is of the highest quality, and that you receive fair and consistent treatment.

  • Visiting students

If you're already studying a postgraduate research degree at another university, you can apply to spend time at York as a   visiting research student .

Types of course

The following types of research degrees are all qualifications in their own right. They each have a different duration and examination requirements.

  • Full-time: typically three or four years
  • Part-time: typically six years

PhDs are the highest research degree-level qualification in the UK. A PhD allows you to explore a specific area of your chosen subject in-depth. You'll conduct a piece of independent and original research, which you'll write up in the form of a substantial thesis. A supervisor will help you to navigate your topic, offering expert advice on the direction of your research.

Completing a PhD can give you a great sense of personal achievement. You'll develop high-level transferable skills and contribute to the development of knowledge in your chosen field. Our research students often present papers and posters at conferences in the UK and abroad. Many have the satisfaction of seeing their work published.

Some departments offer the opportunity to undertake a PhD by distance learning. This means that you undertake your research and thesis production remotely, attending York’s campus only occasionally. You can be based in the UK or abroad and can study full-time or part-time.

It offers the same high quality of supervisory support, primarily online, and demands the same level of academic rigour as a campus-based PhD.

Browse our distance learning PhDs

  • Full-time: four years

Integrated PhD programmes (iPhDs) are offered by a small number of departments. As an iPhD student you’ll be enrolled on a PhD programme, and treated as a PhD student from the outset. However, in your first year, the integrated studies year, you’ll study 120-credits worth of taught modules (normally at Masters level). You'll also undertake a period of research preparation which will include a small-scale research project and either a literature review or research proposal.

The purpose of the integrated studies year is to enhance your knowledge of the discipline so that you're as well-prepared as possible to commence your PhD research project.

In Economics, the iPhD is the standard PhD entry point for all students. In other disciplines, a department may recommend that you apply for an iPhD in place of a standard PhD if they believe that this will be in your best interests . For example, your Masters degree may not have provided the depth and/or breadth of knowledge that your supervisor feels is necessary for you to start your PhD research.

  • Full-time: two years
  • Part-time: four years

An MPhil is like a small-scale PhD and may suit you if you can't commit to a longer PhD. You'll conduct a piece of original research and develop your skills in research, writing, analysis and critical thinking. Some research students enrol on an MPhil course and transfer to a PhD at the end of their second year - however, the MPhil is a qualification in its own right. Research for the MPhil is carried out in a similar way to the PhD, but the final thesis is normally shorter.

  • Full-time: one year
  • Part-time: two years

A research Masters involves completing a short, focused research project which is normally assessed by a thesis. You can choose a specific research project and work with a greater degree of independence than on a taught masters course. You'll work with a supervisor who will advise you on your project. Your department will provide research training and support.

Capitals’ T.J. Oshie hopes to play next season. He’ll only do so if his back problems are fixed

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — T.J. Oshie lingered on the ice long after many of his Washington Capitals teammates departed for the locker room following the loss that eliminated them from the playoffs.

His family was at all four games, including in New York, just in case.

They could be the final ones he plays in the NHL.

Oshie isn’t calling it a career just yet, but the 37-year-old winger acknowledged Tuesday he and doctors must find a solution to his chronic back problems before committing to return for a 17th season.

“I’d love to play next year, but I will need to come back with somewhat of a guarantee that my back won’t be — it’s hard putting everyone through the situation,” Oshie said. “I’d like to find just an answer and a fix to the problem before I make another run at it.”

Oshie’s back and other injuries limited him to 52 of 82 games during the regular season, and he played the series finale against the Rangers with a broken left hand.

“A broken hand is like a hangnail compared to what I go through with my back,” Oshie said, adding he’s often on the floor unable to move when it gives out. “There’s been a lot of just extra things that I have to do to make sure that my back is ready to play an NHL game.”

Already expecting center Nicklas Backstrom to remain on long-term injured in the final year of his contract after stepping away in November because of a nagging hip issue , general manager Brian MacLellan said the team will support Oshie whichever decision he makes and doesn’t have a date by which he’d like an answer.

“If he determines at some point that he feels good, he wants to come back to play, let’s go that way,” MacLellan said. “If he doesn’t, we’ll work it out that way, too.”

Oshie’s presence or lack thereof would certainly affect how the Capitals affect the offseason, whether they can use his $5.75 million salary space or need to fill a major void.

“He’s a big part of our team,” MacLellan said. “You have him, or you go out and find a guy.”

Oshie, who reached the 1,000 games milestone and scored the empty-net goal that clinched a playoff spot, long ago emerged as a popular teammate and fan favorite and was the Capitals’ emotional engine for nearly a decade while playing through injuries.

“He’s a warrior,” captain Alex Ovechkin said. “He’s a guy who brings energy on the ice and off the ice. He have so much respect from the coaching staff to the fans and from the players, as well. He’s a guy who brings everything to this group on the ice and off the ice.”

OVECHKIN’S PURSUIT

After scoring just eight goals in his first 43 games of the season, Ovechkin went on a tear down the stretch to finish with 31 before being held without a point in a playoff series for the first time. At 853, he’s 42 away from Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career record , turns 39 in September and has two years remaining on his contract.

“If I make it, it’s good, but it’s still 42 goals,” Ovechkin said. “It’s kind of a long way. But it’s possible if you’re going to be healthy, yeah.”

MacLellan joked about penciling in Ovechkin for 42 next season, knowing full well it’s unfair to expect one of the oldest players in the league to carry Washington offensively. His hope is also to add through trades and free agency to give Ovechkin some help.

GOALIE QUESTIONS

Charlie Lindgren earned the No. 1 job from Darcy Kuemper and carried the Capitals to the playoffs starting a career-high 48 games. He has one season left on the three-year, $3.3 million contract he has outperformed and looks in line for a major raise, whether it’s with Washington or someone else.

“We’ll kind of see what happens with that,” Lindgren said. “It’d be nice, I’m not going to lie. Obviously it’s something that I’m working hard and I’m doing everything I can not just for myself but for my family and for the team and the organization.”

While Lindgren is eligible to sign an extension July 1, MacLellan expects conversations but to go into the season without a new contract. He also expects Kuemper, two seasons into a five-year contract worth $26.25 million he got after backstopping Colorado to the Cup in 2022, to bounce back and have a good season.

Slide Over, Auntie: Young Chinese Find Tasty Meals in Senior Canteens

The community canteens, offering huge plates for a dollar or two, have become popular among penny-pinching young professionals.

A group of diners sitting at tables near a window in a community canteen with several bicycles and motorbikes parked in front.

By Alexandra Stevenson

Alexandra Stevenson spent several days eating in community canteens across Shanghai.

Inside a canteen for seniors in downtown Shanghai, a worker brandishing a sponge inched closer to Maggie Xu, 29, as she was finishing her rice and garlic-and-oil-soaked broccoli. Ms. Xu ignored her.

“If you come at 12 o’clock, the aunties will give you less food,” Ms. Xu said, speaking softly. After 1:30 p.m., they give away soup. They also start to hover — like the auntie with the sponge — hurrying laggards out the door.

Ms. Xu is familiar with the rhythms of the Tongxinhui Community Canteen because she eats there every day to save money. She has a good job as an accountant at a foreign firm, but she can’t shake a creeping sense of unease about her future.

“Only when you save money will you feel safe,” she said.

In these tough economic times in China, many young people are jobless , but they aren’t the only anxious ones. A devastating crash in the value of real estate, where most household wealth is tied up, has heightened a feeling among young working professionals like Ms. Xu that their situation is precarious, too.

In Shanghai, some people are finding relief at subsidized community centers that once served mostly seniors but are now also drawing younger crowds. The food is affordable and plentiful. The plates on offer, sometimes as cheap as $1.40, are crammed with local specialties like shredded eel with hot oil, steamed pork ribs or red braised pork belly.

Similar to soup kitchens, the canteens are privately run but subsidized by China’s ruling Communist Party and cater to older residents who are too frail to cook or are homebound, offering discounted meals and delivery services.

At the canteen where Ms. Xu likes to eat, diners who are 70 or older are given a 15 percent discount. The canteen is part of a three-story party community center that opened in May.

As neighbors and workers from nearby shops and small offices pack into the canteen for lunch and dinner, collapsible dining tables and plastic chairs are quickly assembled, spilling out into the building entrance to accommodate grumbling bellies.

During the lull between meals, older residents sit in the entrance, chatting and passing the time. A giant sickle-and-hammer ceiling light glows, reminding diners of the landlord.

The canteens date back to a dark time during Mao’s Great Leap Forward in the late 1950s, when the Communist Party replaced private restaurants with communal canteens, said Seung-Joon Lee, an associate professor of history at the National University of Singapore.

Mismanagement of the canteens played a role in the disastrous famine that would come to define the Great Leap Forward.

“Perhaps to some, it may remind them of the tragic events of the Maoist communal canteens,” Mr. Lee said.

More recently, community canteens have emerged as part of a broader social welfare initiative to improve food services for a swiftly aging population.

There are 6,000 local groups running community canteens around the country, according to the official Xinhua news service. In Shanghai, where nearly one-fifth of the population is 65 or older, there are more than 305 community canteens. Many of them get tax breaks and low or free rent.

But the canteens have become an important fixture for Shanghai’s younger working population, too. The portions are often so generous that they can be stretched out over several meals, and diners can often be seen packing away dishes they haven’t finished.

The cost-saving impetus stems from a reluctance to spend that has become so common among Chinese people that it is contributing to the country’s economic problems and prompting top officials to talk with a sense of urgency about promoting confidence.

If there is one thing that Deng Chunlong, 31, is missing right now, it’s confidence. Mr. Deng’s personal-training business has suffered. Some clients have stopped going to his studio altogether. Others sign up for a third of the classes they used to, he said.

Mr. Deng, who is tall with unruly hair, has been eating cheaper food at the community canteen in Jing’an, a district of Shanghai, to reduce his spending. He recently stopped renting an apartment and sleeps in his Pilates studio.

“I feel that business is not as easy as before,” he said between bites of cauliflower and pork. “It feels like people are not willing to spend as much.”

When Mr. Deng discovered the canteen a year ago, it had mostly older customers, he said, but the clientele has since expanded. “There are many young people now,” he said.

In some neighborhoods, the young stand alongside older people, forming lines that sometimes stretch onto the street. The customers find the community canteens listed on restaurant apps and on social media platforms, where people also share tips about which dishes are the tastiest and the cheapest.

“Young people who are not very wealthy for the time being must visit Shanghai community canteens,” one person wrote on Xiaohongshu, an app similar to Instagram. Another person described the canteens as a “happy home for the poor.”

It was by scrolling on Dianping, a Chinese food app, that Charles Liang, 32, discovered Tianping Community Canteen in the upscale Shanghai neighborhood of Xuhui.

From the outside, the canteen looks more like a modern restaurant, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a red brick facade. Inside, the plastic blue boxes overflowing with colorful and dirtied plastic plates give the place more of a cafeteria vibe.

“I tend to save money,” said Mr. Liang, an independent graphic and clothing designer who said finding work had become harder. A two-month Covid lockdown across Shanghai in 2022 also weighed on his outlook, he said, making him more ambivalent about his future and cautious about his finances.

Mr. Liang said he ate regularly at the canteen, which opened in 2020. On this particular evening, when he arrived for dinner, every table was full. One man in a three-piece suit sat down with a tray filled with dishes and began to partition food into plastic takeout containers. Nearly everyone ate quickly and left.

As Mr. Liang was finishing his meal, the dinner crowd began to thin out and some of the canteen’s servers and chefs sat down to eat. One of the servers, Li Cuiping, 61, a migrant worker from the central Chinese province of Henan, said she had been serving people in the canteen for half a year and had noticed more young people in recent months. “Everyone is welcome,” she said.

On a recent Wednesday at another canteen, near Jiangsu Road in the Changning district, a worker known as Fatty Yao was busy clearing more than a dozen empty blue and white dishes left by a group of young office workers. The canteen was serving more young people like that group, he said.

The dishes had been left by Qiu Long, 24, and five of his colleagues who worked together at a lighting design company about a 10-minute walk down the road. Mr. Long and his colleagues said they had started eating at the canteen only a week ago.

They kept returning, though, because it was cheaper and offered more variety than other eateries nearby, many of which Mr. Long said tended to go out of business after a few months.

“I think for working people,” Mr. Long said, “the canteen is a more affordable place to eat.”

Li You contributed to research from Shanghai.

Looking for Tuesday’s Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here:

How To Play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day.

There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.

You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Every letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it’s possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you’re playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess.

If you find three valid words of at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you’ll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words.

Be warned: You’ll need to be on your toes. Sometimes you’ll need to fill the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day, and the puzzle creators will try to surprise you sometimes.

What Is Today’s Strands Hint?

Time for the hints to begin, where we will start with the official clue of the day and I will give you one that’s a bit more focused to help you on your Strands journey. The official hint today is:

A token of our appreciation

And mine is:

It’s all in the game

I tried to do a fun little phrase this time rather than just a word like I normally do.

What Are Today’s Strands Answers?

Scroll slowly! Now we move into spoiler territory where the spangram and answers will be listed below. We will start with the spangram and move on to the larger list after that. The spangram is:

Here’s where that will be on the board:

  • WHEELBARROW

So, as you probably understand at this point, these are all Monopoly pieces. The hard part was not figuring them out after a couple of these, but rather remembering what all the pieces actually were. A penguin? There was a penguin? I feel like I’m being gaslit. There was a dog and a top hat too, right? And I think they added more over time. Why were those pieces chosen? Here’s a bit of history:

“Darrow's niece came up with a better idea. She suggested that the game pieces should be charms from a girl's charm bracelet. The idea was a success and the iconic Monopoly pieces were born.”

Well, I can’t say I got that coming. Kind of an odd selection of charms if you ask me. My first hint got me IRON and I thought maybe I was looking for like BRONZE and SILVER and GOLD and different metals, but by SHIP I started getting it. Maybe you did too.
