Essay: Most Beautiful Place I Have Ever Seen

Majestic scenery, wilderness, and wildlife make up the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Millions of people travel to the United States to visit Yosemite National Park every year, but for me, it was more than just a national park, it was the most beautiful place I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Drenched in history, the Yosemite National Park was first discovered by Native Americans over 10,000 years ago, and we can thank President Abraham Lincoln who first signed a grant in 1864 to permanently protect the land. Yosemite was one of the first territories preserved for its scenic beauty, public use, and continued enjoyment.

The Yosemite National Park is renowned worldwide for being one of the most beautiful national parks to visit. It situate in Central Sierra Nevada of California, and 95% of the park officially class as wilderness (that is huge considering the entire park covers 1200 square miles)!

I will never forget to look up to witness the most incredible, dramatic waterfalls pounding down from sheer cliff edges. Awe-inspiring granite cliffs and crystal clear streams surrounding me and putting the power of nature into perspective. If you have ever considered exploring the Yosemite National Park, please give yourself plenty of time to do so. A week was not long enough for me!

Placing the enchanted landscapes to the side; my main inspiration to visit Yosemite stemmed from all the stories I had heard of wildlife living in peace and protection in their natural habitats. I had read about wild coyotes, black bears, mountain lions, river otters, pumas, panthers and over 200 species of birds circling the area! Of course, you are not guaranteed to see everything, but by giving myself a week there, I was able to see quite a lot.

Useful & Interesting Fact!

According to various articles, there are approximately 400-500 black bears in Yosemite but it is important you know what to do should you ever come face-to-face with one of them. Yes, they are gorgeous to look at and watch (I had the pleasure of seeing four black bears during my time there) but, as you will be aware, they can be dangerous if you find yourself too close. Maybe easier said than done but try not to show fear if this happens. Stand your ground, raise your arms and make almighty loud noises!!! It says that bears will most likely be scared away.

My top 5 things to do in Yosemite National Park:

Visit yosemite valley.

Described as the most stunning location in the whole of America, the Yosemite Valley is of course not to miss. It is seven miles long and less than a mile wide accommodating the Merced River which flows through it. Here I was lucky enough to witness how the deer and coyotes live; to say this was an enjoyable experience would be an understatement.

Visit Yosemite Falls

It is the highest waterfall in the Yosemite National Park and the fifth-highest waterfall in the entire world. The impact of the water as it hits the base of the lower fall echoes through much of the valley and if you are lucky you will witness the most magical rainbow on a sunny day. It is a common sight for explorers!

El Capitan Rock Climbing Mecca

Rising more than 3,000 feet straight up from the Yosemite Valley floor, this is said to be the single largest piece of granite in the world! This world-class destination for experienced climbers is a wonder to climb, and I loved every second of it.

Yosemite Tunnel View

This iconic scene is one of the most stunning things I have ever seen. It allows the perfect balance of sights including El Capitan on the left, Half Dome in the center and Bridalveil Fall on the right! It’s one of the first views you will encounter upon entering the Yosemite Valley and will leave you speechless.

Mariposa Grove

Just wow! Have you ever had the pleasure of seeing the majestic Redwood Trees? These are known to be the largest living thing in the world and can grow up to 85m in height. Visit the Mariposa Grove for a full dose of these enormous trees and the ‘Grizzly Giant’ which is believed to be over 2,700 years old.

Are you an adventurer, an explorer of all things wild and beautiful? I sure am.

Hiking, backpacking, and skiing are all possible at this magnificent area of the world. I spent time indulging in the action packed sports activities such as snowboarding, white-water rafting, hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing the sheer cliff edges at the Yosemite National Park! The wilderness is a real escape from the stresses of modern day civilization, and you can rely on the bubbling natural hot springs to soothe your mind and energy. It is just my experience of this mind-blowing landscape; there is so much more fun to have.

The Yosemite National Park is the most beautiful place I have ever seen, and I recommend it to you.

With culture and art overflowing, it is the perfect tourist spot. In fact, the Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens, Sultan’s palace, and Ulsoor lake are popular tourist haunts known for their exquisite beauty. 

Aside from its physical beauty, the city is a beautiful amalgamation of people who speak Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Telegu, and more! 

Everyone should visit Bangalore in their life at least once and take in its beauty and bustle! After the movie ‘Bangalore Days’, I was mesmerized by the wonder of Bangalore that has captivated many!

One of the most beautiful places I have visited is the country of Kyrgyzstan. It lies in a mountainous area with stunning landscapes and nature untouched by humanity’s footprint. Kyrgyzstan is one of the former Soviet republics, which declared its independence in 1991 and joined the CIS. The country is unique with its pristine nature and numerous biosphere reserves. Besides, the Kyrgyz culture represents the nomadic lifestyle and rich history of the people. Along with an authentic cultural experience, Kyrgyzstan offers a great backpacking adventure for those who pay a visit.

When I first saw the beauty of the country’s nature, I was genuinely impressed. The picturesque scenery made me feel like I found myself in a storybook or a fairy tale. The open space seems to have no limits and stretches as far as the eye can see. Many countries are known for their beautiful nature, but the experience in Kyrgyzstan is unlike any other. As Stamboulis (2018) stated, the country is not highly populated, and no strict regulations prevent locals and tourists from exploring the countryside in its beauty, which, nevertheless, is not harmful to the wildlife. In such conditions, nature is blooming, the air always smells fresh, and clear water runs in rivers and streams.

Kyrgyzstan is often referred to as the “Swiss Alps of Central Asia” because of its location. The country lies between the Tien-Shan and the Pamir-Alay mountain ranges and encompasses a variety of ecosystems, among which mountain glaciers and arid canyons, alpine pastures and valleys, lakes and rivers (Jenish, 2017). The continental climate adds up to the unique experience one can get in the country, as various activities are available in different seasons, from swimming and horse riding to snowboarding and skiing. Kyrgyzstan cannot be boring, because wildlife is abundant and worth sightseeing in the country.

Visiting Kyrgyzstan is like being alive a hundred years ago, living in a country that is pure and innocent. As I arrived in Kyrgyzstan, the atmosphere of people’s life there astonished me. Even though the country has become more progressive, some locals still practice a semi-nomadic lifestyle, allowing the tourists to learn about the Kyrgyz culture and traditions. Apart from hiking in the mountains, another remarkable experience was tasting beshbarmak, a dish made of meat and noodles. It is meant to be eaten with hands, without cutlery, to focus on the flavors. However, it is difficult to name just one notable thing about Kyrgyzstan, since many experiences come to my mind. During my trip, I saw ancient petroglyphs of an old civilization and the historical routes of the Great Silk Road, tasted blini (traditional pancakes), touched the waters of Lake Issyk-Kul, and got a chance to see the works of local artisans. The hospitality of the Kyrgyz people, direct descendants of Genghis Khan, to westerners made my experience unforgettable.

To sum up, Kyrgyzstan is a country of friendly people and beautiful views, attractive for tourists who want to expand their horizons and come into contact with nature. The Kyrgyz culture has developed over the centuries, but the influence of nomadic life can be tracked up to today. This feature makes the country a fascinating destination for people who like to learn something new about other nations. The country is highly underrated as a tourist landmark, but visiting it is a remarkable experience.

One of the most intriguing places I’ve visited as a tourist is Petra in Jordan. Often referred to as the ‘Rose City’, Petra is an archaeological site that boasts of ancient ruins carved directly into pink sandstone cliffs.

I was drawn to Petra primarily because of its historical significance and its mention in many travel documentaries. Having seen its awe-inspiring pictures, I was eager to experience its grandeur firsthand.

During my visit, I embarked on a long walk through a narrow, winding gorge called the Siq, which finally opened up to reveal the famed Treasury – an ornate temple facade that stands as an emblem of Petra. I also took guided tours to understand the rich history of the Nabateans, the ancient Arab civilization that established Petra. Climbing up to the Monastery and looking down at the entire Petra basin was another highlight.

What made Petra incredibly interesting to me wasn’t just its visual appeal but its historical context. Learning how this city was a major trading hub and discovering the intricate water conduit system the Nabateans built, gave me a deep appreciation for ancient engineering and architectural prowess. The fact that such a city, with its monumental structures, was hidden away in the midst of rugged desert landscapes was nothing short of mesmerizing.

Kyoto, Japan, stands out as one of the most captivating places I’ve visited. Serving as Japan’s capital for over a millennium, Kyoto is a city that gracefully combines the old with the new.

My visit to Kyoto was prompted by its reputation as the cultural heart of Japan. With its centuries-old temples, traditional wooden houses, and imperial palaces, I was keen to delve deep into Japan’s rich heritage.

In Kyoto, I visited the Golden Pavilion, a Zen temple that shimmers in gold leaf and is surrounded by a tranquil pond. I meandered through the historic Gion district, hoping to catch a glimpse of geishas going about their day. A trip to Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its thousands of red torii gates, was spiritually invigorating. I also partook in traditional tea ceremonies and savored Kyoto’s delicate kaiseki meals.

Kyoto fascinated me because it wasn’t just about visiting places; it was about immersing oneself in experiences. The serenity of the temples, the beauty of cherry blossom seasons, the rich customs, and the warmth of its people made my journey truly enriching. Here, amidst modernity, traditions thrived, and every corner seemed to whisper tales from the past.

There are a lot of beautiful and wonderful places all over the world, and every living soul on this planet must have a place he/she would love to return to at least for a moment. And such places do differ with people; as for me, I am deeply keen of nature, mountains especially. The place that I was and am quite astounded with is located on the very border with Canada in the region of San Juan Islands, some 100 miles from Seattle, WA, and is called the Orcas Island. Quite interesting is the name of the island, and it actually stands for itself – there are a lot of orcas in the waters of Eastsound (I was lucky to come across couple of them while travelling with a ferry). When you come to the island, the first thing you notice is how green the whole place is. I mean, that part of the U.S is incredibly green comparing it to other states, but the Orcas Island does differ with its pure, rich with oxygen air, crystal blue (when it is not raining) sky, with view so picturesque you want to stay and never leave the place. The house we were staying in was located on the top of the hill at the very edge of the island, so, that when you look straight ahead, all of the neighbor islands become visible, with vast waters surrounding them, and stretching for miles. The whole island is full of tall pine trees that make the air so clean, you will think you have never truly breathed before. The island’s nature fully reveals itself early in the morning (especially during the sunrise); when you wake up and go outside, first thing you will see is fog, as it is quite foggy there. But later, as it starts to dissolve, the vast shapes of the nearby islands with their hilltops start to come into view; then whole islands become visible, with water all around them. At the daytime the temperature rises, and you might be able to enjoy the time being outside, if you are lucky enough not to get caught up in the rain. But we did actually catch the rain in one of days spent there, and quite frankly it was even more beautiful for me, as I just love to see Mother Nature in action. Sitting on the front porch, looking into the deep and watching the storm slowly coming towards you, with lightning and thunder seen and heard somewhere far, but so close, is an amazing feeling that leaves you breathless. During daytime it is quite nice to simply wander around the forest, and to be able to feel all the might of those huge old pine trees. Here and there you can see some animals that despite the disturbance carry on with their activities. In the evening, when the sun goes down another view becomes revealed, the view that can be seen only in the highlands or in the mountains. As this place is higher above the sea level than most of our cities, stars here are bigger and brighter, so that during a clear night you can take your sleeping bag, and watch this night theater till the morning comes. Such is my favorite and the most beautiful place and those days will stay in my memory for the time to come. And when I have a slight chance to go there, I use that chance, admiring the breathtaking beauty of the place as if for the first time.

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

Lately, I visited the Glacier National Park. The trip gave me immense pleasure after a long time period. This is one such area where nature has bestowed her exquisiteness to the mountains. The place is ideal for hiking and trekking. I consider myself fortunate that I got an opportunity to visit this place.

For long, I have been travelling to nearby places, sometimes alone, other times with my family. However, to the Glacier National Park, I visited alone. The area is rocky and filled with natural beauties. Thus, as per my perception, the best time to visit this park is during winter. This opinion may differ accordingly. I can guarantee that the best time is winter as I have visited this place in varying seasons but found the end of the year to be the perfect time. So, my last visit was somewhere in the middle of December.

To visit this place all alone, there were several reasons. I wanted to spend some quality time by myself. In my office, I had a massive workload. Being a professional in an IT agency, I had to work under stringent rules and regulations. Keeping all of this in mind, I was too exhausted to spend another week in the office. So, to rejuvenate myself, improve productivity and get back my strength, I decided to take a week off and travel.

As far as my experience is concerned, I found this place to be a naturally tranquil one. I found serenity by spending time in this place. The wilderness of the mountains simply flabbergasted me. The carved valleys and peaks were magnificent. Moreover, I had some good time hiking and riding on a boat. There were also camping services, but I was unable to avail them. Cycling was another adventurous activity I could find there. The night was bright and the million stars soothe your anxiety in no time.

I also liked the lakes and wide glaciers of the park. Out of all, I liked the mountain ranges the most as they were different from others that I have seen.

India is an amazingly beautiful country. It is bounded by the Himalayan range in the north and is covered by the Arabian Sea in the west, the Bay of Bengal in the east and the Indian Ocean in the south. I have visited many places in India. I have always been a mountain person. On that note, I visited Sikkim last winter. It was a beautiful trip of 20 days. I don’t clearly remember the exact date, but it was in May, 2019.

The weather was very chilly there. I visited the place with my family, which includes my parents and my sister and it was a beautiful experience. I have realised that you can have the most adventurous and daring trip with your friends, but it’s a different kind of fun with your family. When you are out with your parents, you might not be allowed to do daring things like you can do with your friends but you can have a safe and beautiful trip. You can always notice a change in parents’ behaviour, especially when you are on vacation. Neither do they scold their children to be disciplined nor follow the house rules. They shed off their strict self and tend to become friends and enjoy the beauty of nature along with you. I had my sister, who was my best friend too. We were always together.

Visiting a mountain region in winter is a challenge. It was extremely cold and snowy everywhere. We were visiting the place for the second time. So we didn’t go sightseeing and stayed and visited the local places which we missed. It was as if the snow-capped mountains were calling us. We visited a village and decided to spend the entire afternoon with them. The people there were so humble. They offered us food. It was the most memorable incident there.

Sikkim is one of the smallest states of India, situated in the Northeastern part. Since my childhood, I was drawn towards mountains more than I was towards the sea. Mountains are always the most peaceful and calm place one can ever be, and I think it is the most attractive part. After we returned, we relived the old memories. I loved that place. We watched the photographs that we clicked. Those are the only memories we can ever get hold of.

Although I am not a religious person, The Golden Temple has attracted me since I began to explore. I had expressed the wish of visiting the temple to my parents multiple times, but we could not plan a single trip to Amritsar due to my busy schedule. So, they decided to surprise me and fulfilled my wish by ending our Himachal Pradesh trip in Amritsar.

My parents, and rarely, some of my close friends, had been my constant travel companion and so, no one else could accompany me on one of my dream trips other than these special people of my life. 

As usual, our Himachal trip was a huge success, but I was excited to go back home after the 20 days trip to celebrate my 25th birthday with my near and dear ones. Therefore, I was irked when we took a detour, which was already planned and I was unaware of. However, when we landed in Amritsar, I became ecstatic. As aforementioned, they had planned to make my birthday memorable by visiting the Golden Temple. Everything went as planned, and at the end of the day, seated by the Amrit Sarovar with my pillars by my side, brought happy tears to my eyes.

The Golden Temple or Harmandir Sahib is not only a pious place for the Sikhs but is also a symbol of brotherhood. It was first built by Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru, in 1604, while the foundation was laid by Mian Mir, a Muslim aesthetic from Lahore. It has faced defacement by various Afghan invaders and was finally rebuilt by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. This amalgamation of various cultures is respected and celebrated in the architecture and philosophy related to this monument. What I like the most about this place is that anybody, irrespective of their caste, religion, or race, is welcomed, offered food and can find solace without hindrance. For me, it is a symbol of humility, equality, and fraternity in a country that houses heterogeneous cultures and beliefs. This visit to one of my favourite places gave me the strength to fight all odds and calmed my anxieties.

Ban Gioc Waterfall, for impressive waterfalls

This is actually the name for two waterfalls on the Quây Sơn River lying within the Unesco-listed Cao Bang Geopark in northeastern Vietnam. The falls straddle the border of Vietnam and China and measure an impressive 30m (98ft). These falls are in an extraordinarily scenic location and they are one of the few places best to see during the monsoon season between May-October, when the river’s flow is at its most powerful.

The island played a significant role during the Indochina war as it was where many French political prisoners were held and executed. If I could imagine of the most beautiful and loving place I have ever visited, then Dubai, my home country will always be a priority. I was born in Dubai, which is the most populous and the largest city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Since 1971, when the country was formed, Dubai has always remained to be the most united, modern of all nations, and resourceful. Perhaps the city is home for not only native citizens but also tourists who come from all over the world to go and see the Emirates Towers and the Burj Al Arab. Indeed, this building found in Dubai is also a major tourists’ attraction site to many people who want to come and see the beauty of technology and skills in constructing buildings.

Dubai city is wholly modern and the numerous skyscrapers erected all over the streets give it a colorful and attracting look. I have grown up to love nature and the beauty of having a clean and attracting environment. Dubai is home for real nature as far as natural resources such as land, air, and water are concerned. The city is rich in beautiful parks and beaches which are covered by beautiful palm and bamboo trees. For instance, the Al Mamzar Park and beach have a natural environment, and if a person visits them, he/she could easily smell nature around him/her. If you could pass near Al Mamzar Park, then you will notice the beauty created in the way water smashes angrily against rocks in the nearby streams and rivers. The Jumeirah Beach Park is another beautiful place found in Dubai. The place has an incredibly soft stretch of golden sand, grassy areas, and palm trees that are so attracting.

Dubai is home for trading activities, and shopping is more comfortable for anybody. The city has attractive shopping malls, with the Emirates mall being the largest mall in the Middle East. In these shopping malls, many traditionally hand-made goods and souvenirs are sold, and the whole process of shopping is tax-free. People in Dubai value their traditional foods such as the Arabic coffee which is served on all streets in the city, stuffed camel, Al Harees, Shawarma, Hummus, and the delicious Al Machboos. People in Dubai are friendly, and someone could easily notice from the way they handle strangers who get lost in the streets or try to buy foodstuffs from the shopping malls and the street hawkers.

Perhaps the streets in Dubai city reflect a blend of tradition and science. The skyscrapers are scientifically designed in a Muslim culture and style. Many buildings are painted in golden color, a symbol of wealth and richness of Dubai. Although the town is little over-crowded, it is rich in all types of traditional artifacts reflecting the native culture of the people of the place and their mosaic culture. All the city streets are safe and free from robbers or burglars of any kind. If you could happen to walk at night on the roads in Dubai city, you will quickly notice a police car rotating and patrolling the city.

Dubai city lies in a migration path of different kinds of birds from and toward Asia, Africa, and Europe. A large percentage of these migratory birds pass during winter and autumn. Dubai waters harbor more than 310 species of fish and other aquatic animals. The city has a humid and hot climate, and the town receives light rains annually. During the rainy seasons, it is pleasurable to see the way rain falls down in long knitting needles. Diversity in culture and ethnic groups, in Dubai, perhaps lit up my life in the manner in which it shaped my character to the extent of being able to accommodate all kinds of people regardless of their race, gender, tribe or ethnic orientation. The diversity of Cuisine indicates the cosmopolitan nature of Dubai society. I miss the musical scene of my country, which is a home for active musicians such as Phil Collins, Shakira Pink, Elton John, Celine Dion, and many other world’s celebrities. Indeed, it is a pleasant experience and a great inspiration for having born in Dubai.

Bruges, Belgium

Bruges’ compact size and perfect prettiness can make it seem a little unreal, like a classic postcard come to life or perhaps a toy town, albeit infused with the scents of beer, frites and sweet crêpes. The city is characterized by cobbled lanes, canals, medieval spires and looping bridges. Muscat, Oman

York, North Yorkshire, England, UK

York has an impressive pedigree, having been founded way back in AD 71 by the Romans. Parts of the Roman city still exist, but the most eye-catching landmarks – from the Gothic York Minster to the imposing shell of York Castle – are medieval. At its heart is Stonegate, which is lined with independent shops and cafés – and has a Roman road running beneath it. The wonderfully named Shambles is another charming street, overhung by half-timbered houses dating back to the 14th century.

Its mud-walled streets and courtyard homes seem barely touched by modern life.

Sydney positively sparkles with fresh, sleek beauty, from its green spaces and beaches to its incredible architecture. County Galway regularly appears on lists of the most beautiful places in Ireland, so it’s no surprise that its capital city is a stunner too. The city’s ancient core is still in use, with Kirwan's Lane a fine example of the narrow medieval streets, all cobblestones and arches. The Claddagh, a fishing district with origins in the 5th century, lies to the west of the city with colorful fishermen’s cottages and glorious views across the water.

Québec City, Québec, Canada

Québec City is defined by the citadel at its heart, the fortified Old Town full of cobblestoned streets, mansard-roofed houses and imposing statues. Most of the (excellently maintained) buildings are from the 17th and 18th centuries, but Château Frontenac, presiding over the whole city and now a luxury hotel, dates to the 1890s. Its picturesque streets and alleyways were made for getting wonderfully, happily lost in.

Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

As with the rest of the island state of Tasmania, Hobart has a more rugged feel than other major cities in Australia, trading white-sand beaches for moody mountains and wide, breezy streets for narrow alleys. Rising above the city is the 4,170-feet-high (1,271m) Kunanyi (or Mount Wellington), which has glorious views of this city spread along the River Derwent. There are beaches too, and gloriously golden ones at that.

Tauranga, New Zealand

With its picture-perfect beaches, colorful street art and green parks complete with palm trees, Tauranga is a perfect chilled-out beachside city. But it’s Mauao (Mount Maunganui), an extinct volcano jutting out into the bay, which really sets it apart. Hiking trails weave up to the summit, which has panoramic views across the city to its white-sand beaches and the Pacific Ocean.

Lhasa, Tibet

The Holy City, the Place of the Gods, the center of Tibetan Buddhism – Lhasa has a lot to live up to. But it would be hard not to be moved by the first sight of the Potala Palace or the fervor of pilgrims walking the Barkhor circuit around the Jokhang temple in winding, incense-scented alleys. Perhaps it’s the altitude, but Lhasa seems to have something magical about it.

San Francisco, California, USA

San Francisco has made the most of its privileged spot around San Francisco Bay, with piers jutting into the water and green spaces including the Presidio, a vast and varied park on a former military base and right next to the rust-red arches of the Golden Gate Bridge. But the rest of the city is a stunner too with pastel houses – including the famous Victorian Painted Ladies by Alamo Square, pictured – stacked like rows of wedding cakes clinging to vertiginous streets.

Kyoto, Japan

With its temples, shrines and Imperial Palace, Kyoto looms large in Japanese culture. Though the center is fairly modern, the city’s historic districts are as beguiling and beautiful as ever. There’s Arashiyama, home to bamboo groves and pagodas; Higashiyama, with cherry blossom trees bowing over the canal and temples lining the foothills; and Gion and Pontocho, where geisha can sometimes be glimpsed emerging from traditional machiya (tea houses) and gliding down the narrow streets to their next engagement.

Nuuk, Greenland

The capital city of one of the world’s wildest places, Nuuk feels like it’s always either preparing for winter or has already hunkered down against it. In summer, the wood-clad houses add bright spots of red, pink and orange to a landscape of green grass, black rocks and piercingly blue sea. In winter, they pop against the thick layer of white snow, slate-gray water and almost sunless days. That’s also the best time to see the dancing green lights of the aurora borealis or Northern Lights.

Shanghai, China

To many, Shanghai means one thing: The Bund. The promenade looks across the river to the skyscrapers of Pudong, which are extravagantly illuminated at night. This is a big, brash and unashamedly bold metropolis. But there are a few areas offering a relatively subdued and peaceful contrast to the almost relentlessly gleaming, heady megacity. The old French Concession is particularly atmospheric, while the Old Town has the highest concentration of temples in the city.

Stirling, Scotland, UK

Stirling seems to be striving towards its highest ground, the whole of the Old Town drawing the eye up to the imposing Stirling Castle and a step higher still to the Neo-Gothic Wallace Monument. Set among rolling farmland and forested mountains, it makes for a dramatic gateway to the Highlands. And it loses none of its drama up close. Its steep, cobbled streets are lined with sturdy stone buildings with an occasional moldering old mansion thrown in for good, Gothic measure.

Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Despite being a huge, sprawling metropolis, Yogyakarta retains its traditions, heritage and thriving arts scene. At its heart is the sultan’s palace (Kraton), with several other of the king's residences dotted around the city. Most of the buildings are in traditional Javanese style, but some display European and Chinese influences. Taman Sari is particularly enchanting – an evocative, partially ruined royal bathing complex, it's the focal point of a charming residential area.

Rome, Italy

Packed with ancient monuments and picturesque piazzas, Rome’s historic core must be one of the world’s most seductive. There’s the imposing Colosseum, the iconic, creamy columns of the Pantheon, the world-famous Trevi Fountain and countless charming squares. The city is so full of beauty and iconic sights at every street corner that it rivals some of the best museums in the world (and it has some of those too).

St. Augustine, Florida, USA

Feeling closer to the Mediterranean than the commercial charms of Orlando, St. Augustine’s Old Town is all Spanish-Colonial buildings, palm-lined streets and cobbled lanes. Lyon, France

The prettiest part of Lyon is its old town, Vieux Lyon, where it’s easy to get lost in narrow streets lined with medieval and Renaissance buildings and criss-crossed with the city’s distinctive traboules. These covered alleys and tunnels, originally built to protect silk-workers from the rain, are incredibly atmospheric. But to get a real sense of the city, you need a wider view. The pretty but unpretentious charms of Portland are given extra clout by the city’s location, right on the water. Cartagena, Colombia

Founded on the Caribbean coast of Colombia in the 1530s, Cartagena is one of Latin America’s most beautiful cities. Its narrow streets are lined with churches, pretty courtyards and brightly painted houses, their balconies overflowing with plants.

Barcelona, Spain

Each district of the Catalonian capital has something new to show off, but it’s the city’s buildings that really make it memorable. The grid-planned streets of the Eixample are enlivened by the sinuous lines of La Pedrera, dramatic spires of Casa de les Punxes and, of course, the city’s crowning jewel, the Sagrada Família. Seemingly rising from the ground, Gaudì’s masterpiece alone earns Barcelona a place among the world’s most beautiful cities.

Charleston, South Carolina, USA

Charleston oozes Southern charm and elegance. The city – the oldest in South Carolina, founded in 1670 – retains a small-town air with its pastel-colored antebellum houses and canopied porches (often complete with a rocking chair or two). Lübeck, Germany

Budapest, Hungary

The Hungarian capital is actually two cities – Buda and Pest – rolled into one, yet still sliced in half by the Danube. Budapest has long been one of Europe's most important cities, once capital of the Kingdom of Hungary. Marrakech, Morocco

Munich, Germany

Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is packed with grand architecture, glorious open spaces and a generous number of beer gardens. Dakar, Senegal

It’s hard to know where to look in Dakar, which combines the charms of a vibrant city with the appeal of a laid-back beach town. The city is full of history and architectural gems including the strikingly patterned Mosque of the Divinity. It’s the gorgeous beaches and islands that really make Dakar stand out, though. Laid-back Île de Ngor is all swaying palms and colorful boats, while Île de Gorée is undoubtedly the most well-known for its role in the Atlantic slave trade but also its elegant architecture and emerging artistic community.

Havana, Cuba

Havana’s faded grandeur is famous for a reason. It's no surprise Italy has several cities that make our list and we couldn't leave out Venice. The northern city, built on a lagoon, has long lured lovers, tourists and artists alike, drawn to the unique architecture. Highlights include the Piazza San Marco (dominated by St Mark's Basilica), Doges Palace and the looping Rialto Bridge. But really, there’s beauty around every corner, in every piazza and every canal.

Zanzibar City, Tanzania

Zanzibar City is the capital of Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region and small island off the coast of Tanzania, part of the archipelago famed for white-sand beaches. At its core is Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its appeal lies not in formal sights but in its overall beauty and atmosphere. Paris, France

Paris is known as a destination for romance and lovers, but with looks like these it’s the city itself that often steals visitors’ hearts.
