The Role of Culture and Arts in Peace Building and Reconciliation
DANDE Journal of Social Sciences and Communication
This paper argues that conflict resolution, peace building and reconciliation in the 21st century requires a cultural slant in addition to conventional political and military approaches. This development should not be surprising especially given the nature of recent wars which have turned out to be more intra-state than inter-state. Since the end of the Cold war, wars have been focused on issues of culture, ethnicity, politics and religion than on nationalisms. Thus, cultural beliefs, norms, traditions, ethnicity and religion have contributed towards many major disruptions that have cost innocent lives and loss of valuable property. In addition, conflicts and divisions within societies reflect lack of appreciation and intolerance of others` cultural beliefs, views and are motivated by cultural differences. In the wars of recent decades, rape has been used as a weapon of war and children have been abducted to be killers and sex-slaves. Millions of families have been uprooted from the...

Most works in peace studies concern interventions in conflict situations-such as conflict management and projects seeking to sustain peace after a conflict like conflict resolution and peace education. However, using a peace lens, this paper affirms culture as one of the means the Yorùbá utilize to sustain peace in their society. The paper ascertains the presence of conflict and proceeds to discuss how some features of Yorùbá culture facilitate harmony. This article is based on primary research among the Yorùbá within 2014 and 2020, the bulk of which is from chapter 5 of my dissertation.
Religion and culture have throughout history been at the forefront of positive social change that is meant to create an atmosphere of peace, harmony, and happiness for humanity. Religion and culture are two but also ONE. Religion might be defined as an organised collection of beliefs and world views that relate to humanity to an order of existence that explains purpose and destiny. Culture, on the other hand, might be defined as the sum total of ways of living built up by a group of people, which is passed on from one generation to another. This being the case, both religion and culture, directly or indirectly, singly or together, inevitably impact people’s self-perception and self-identity. The two, religion and culture, while influencing people’s identity, play a big role in determining what people view as effective means to attain meaning, harmony and happiness. By their definitions, both religion and peace operate at the forefront of the peace building project. Peace building here refers to elimination of conflict and creating institutional practices that ensure social stability and prevent eruption of new conflicts. Aware of the unmanageable breadth of this topic and considering the intended purpose of this paper, every effort will be made to briefly examine the positive and negative roles played by religion and culture in peace building. The inspiration of writing this paper came from my travel to Rwanda with the Guild Government however for the most part, the discussion will be limited to the Ugandan context. A conclusion drawn from the discussion will lead to a critical look at the role of religion and peace. This critical view will purposefully be presented in question form in order to invite the audience to join the discussion.

THE ART OF PEACE. ALL life is a manifestation of the spirit, the manifestation of love. And the Art of Peace is the purest form of that principle. A warrior is charged with bringing a halt to all contention and strife. Universal love functions in many forms; each man- ifestation should be allowed free expres- sion.
Art represents one of the most special areas of human beings in which the passion for a better life is constructed. Therefore, the idea of peace has never fallen off the agenda as a phenomenon that contemporary art and the artist should ponder. There has always been a struggle, a political attitude at the core of art.
The Art of Peace is based on Four Great Virtues: Bravery, Wisdom, Love, and Friendship, symbolized by Fire, Heaven, Earth, and Water. Twenty Seven. The essence of the Art of Peace is to cleanse yourself of maliciousness, to get in tune with your environment, and to clear your path of all obstacles and barriers.
Within peace education the term learning peace highlights the processual making of peace and the possibility to educate for constructive conflict transformation and non-violent societies (Gruber Citation 2015, 61-62). In earlier times, for example in the fifth century, the poets and artists were the most important ethical teachers in the society.

Internal peace is stressed in the field of religion, especially religions in the East. In the view of religions, this type of peace can be reached by means of prayer, meditation, wisdom and other ways. Internal peace is essential; it is generally regarded as true peace and as a real foundation of peace in society or peace in the world.
