Dog-Man’s Best Friend

This real-life story shows how dogs never give up on their masters. Once, a dog was adopted by an old man named Jammy. Jammy was quite old and used to live alone. To eradicate his loneliness, he adopted a dog and named him Tommy. Jammy used to spend all his time with Tommy – feeding him, playing with him, taking care of him, and nurturing him. As time passed, Tommy and Jammy became inseparable. But Jammy was getting older and unhealthier. One day Jammy did not wake up in the morning. He had died of cardiac arrest. Tommy couldn’t take his master's death, and when Jammy was being cremated, Tommy jumped into his funeral pyre and died. This story is a perfect example of how loyal and perfect friends dogs are.

Dogs are an extremely loyal animal. They have a keen intellect and a powerful sense of hearing which smells unique kinds stuff. They also have several qualities such as swimming throughout the water, jumping anywhere, and having a good sense of smell.

Color:  Dogs are of various colours. They are usually brown, black, or red. Most are white, but some are spotted. So they vary significantly in colour.

Size:  They also come in different sizes. Some dogs are extremely short, like most of them are thin or lean. Further, some are really powerful. Being two common feet tall, when it comes to English dogs, they are voluminous and powerful.

Food:  Dogs will eat up all but vegetables and fruits. They love to eat meat or bread. They can drink tea or milk, as well, and occasionally kill tiny birds such as parrots or pigeons for food. Besides, they may eat rats or cats too.

Habits:  A dog is an extremely loyal animal that always acknowledges its masters. To see him, it started wagging his tail. At the tiniest noise, it gets alert. When it sees a stranger, it barks. It is quite genuine and trustworthy.

Usefulness:  The dog is of great help to us. He’s our real friend . It never departs from its master. It safeguards his residence from thieves or robbers. It maintains a watch over his homes at night.

It’s very helpful for shepherds; it helps to keep their sheep or their goats safe. This drives the jackals or wolves off.

Opinion Dogs are our greatest creation. And we might be theirs.

The dog is humankind’s greatest invention. The wheel, the lightbulb, concrete — all amazing. Top of the line. But nothing in human creation has been as essential and adaptable as the countless descendants of the ancient gray wolf.

How did we do it? I spent three years following the traveling carnival of American dog shows — like a Grateful Dead tour with Milk-Bones — in search of the answer. My journey culminated in the dog world’s most prestigious event: the Westminster Dog Show. Show dogs are bred from the purest stock, culled from litters at just a few weeks old, trained with the dedication of Olympic gymnasts — and groomed like supermodels. They’d be unrecognizable to their ancient kin — and to ours.

The American Kennel Club, arbiter of bloodlines, now recognizes about 200 breeds, while tracking crossbreeds like goldendoodles, and even mutts. From the most massive mastiff to the tiniest teacup chihuahua, all dogs trace back to the same common ancestors.

Scientists think this weird and powerful companionship of humans and dogs might have started somewhere between 15,000 and 30,000 years ago. Humans of that era were mainly hunters traveling in camps. They ate meat by the fire. The cooking meat attracted wolves who were drawn to the aroma but stayed safely out of range of the flames. Every so often, a human would fling a bone into the darkness. The wolves gnawed on the bones. They trailed the humans to the next campsite, still keeping their distance. There was an unspoken arrangement. The wolves alerted the humans to intruders, and the humans fed the wolves well.

Over time the wolves crept closer. One fateful night a curious wolf came all the way into the firelight. The humans didn’t chase it off.

Slowly, the humans mingled with the wolves. After days or months or generations or centuries, a wolf curled up at a human’s feet. Maybe got its belly rubbed. That was the first dog.

As far as we can tell, dogs are the first animals that humans ever tamed. The wolves that hung out with humans found themselves changing inside and out. They developed shorter muzzles and smaller teeth. Their instinct to run became a desire to stay close. With time, dogs were manufactured through breeding to meet different human needs. We made huskies to pull sleds and Newfoundlands to pull fish nets and dachshunds to catch badgers.

Dogs taught humans the early science of designer genes. In the mid-19th century, as we moved off the farm and into the factory, we created dogs we could bring indoors at the end of a workday. And we created dogs we could bring to work: French bulldogs (now the most popular breed in America ) started out as literal lap dogs for lace-makers in France. We molded dogs to be friends, companions, playmates and unofficial therapists.

So dogs are not just humanity’s greatest invention but also its longest-running experiment.

That’s one way to look at it.

Now switch out the frame. Swap the subject and the object. Change the verbs.

Here’s another view:

Around the time early humans evolved, Neanderthals also walked the planet. At some point — roughly 40,000 years ago — humans started to thrive while Neanderthals died off. And this is about the time when those first curious wolves began to evolve into dogs. Some scientists believe the timing is not a coincidence. Maybe the dog was the key advantage in the triumph of humankind.

Dogs enabled humans to settle down and stop their endless wandering. Dogs protected humans at this vulnerable transition from nomadic to settled life. Dogs did work that humans did not have the strength or stamina to do: guarding, herding, hunting, pulling sleds. They created time for humans to build and think and create without having to focus every moment on the next meal or the next threat.

We domesticated dogs, and they domesticated us.

Today, dogs provide not just companionship but also an uncomplicated kind of love in an ever more complicated world. And for those restless souls wandering from town to town, chasing job after job — nomads again — a dog can be an anchor, something to hold on to on a lonely night.

From the gray wolf by the ancient fire to a coifed Pomeranian prancing around the show ring, dogs have been with us nearly as long as we have been human.

They might be our greatest creation. And we might be theirs.

  … would first pay homage to Brian Doyle, knowing that it could never reach the dizzying heights of his “Greatest Nature Essay Ever,” before offering some doggie tidbit, like maybe the fact that dogs smell in stereo, or that sometimes when they roll on the ground in what seems to be joy they’re “really” discharging the static electricity built up in their electrophilic fur. Or maybe it would begin at the purblind beginning, with dogs’ very uncertain origins. They may have evolved from proto-wolves not one but twice, or possibly even three times, maybe in northern Asia or maybe the Middle East or perhaps even Europe. All we know for certain—or think we do—is that dogs evolved alongside humans, intertwined with human interests from their beginnings, leading to this bizarre concoction of natural selection and human engineering.

The greatest dog essay ever might be structured around the dog’s five senses, offering a paragraph on each, putting the reader in the dog’s-eye, dog’s-ear, dog’s-nose view. It would ask: What’s it like to smell in stereo? Should we think about hearing in stereo, and then imagine our ears as nostrils? What’s it like to see in fewer colors but alert to every minute movement? To hear all those sounds out there that the world makes without our knowing, so we call them “ultrasonic”? Imagine feeling a passing car’s rumbles in your paws.

Or the greatest dog essay ever might be structured around different dog breeds and their histories: the cocker spaniel, flushing woodcocks from the underbrush, his flapping ears brushing up scents; the border collie, harnessing the predation of her lupine ancestry into her stalk and stare; the dachshund, whose oversized web paws still dig for genetically remembered burrowed badgers; the husky, whose 20-inch neck yearns to pull weight, be it sleds or sleighs or middle-aged humans on the wrong end of the leash. Every feature of a dog’s body has a history. And then there’s the mutt: the cocker spaniel head on the border collie body, or the husky-terrier that Disney might cast as a cartoon wolf.

The greatest dog essay ever might mention important dogs in history and culture: not just Rin Tin Tin and Lassie (which of course it would mention in passing), but also, maybe, the White House dogs, from Bo Obama to Miss Beazley Bush to Buddy Clinton to the Him and Her beagles of LBJ to FDR’s Scottie, Fala, and all the way back to George Washington’s American foxhounds. Or perhaps it would stretch all the way back to the legendary Argos, who waited 20 years for Odysseus before dying of happiness on his master’s return. It might dip into dog mythology and question the association of dogs with death in many cultures: Cerberus, that three-headed hound of Hades in Greek antiquity; Xoloti, the monstrous dog of the Aztec Underworld; the messenger dogs of Yama, God of Death in Hindu mythology; Anubis, the ancient Egyptian jackal-god and guide into the Afterlife; and the Black Dog of the British Isles, portent of death. Dogs at that liminal space between human civilization, such as it is, and the natural world to which we all return. Dogs who show us the way to a world beyond our knowing.

The greatest dog essay ever wouldn’t shy away from the darker facts. The dogs gone wrong. Mange. Rabies. Dogs bred to kill other dogs, or to kill humans. The perfect little angels who one day suddenly maul a baby. The greatest dog essay might mention the cultures that eat dogs, and then gently redirect that disgust to wonder why it’s okay to eat other animals, mammals even. The essay would acknowledge the millions of strays, and the millions of euthanized dogs every year, and the puppy mills with their permanently caged puppy-making bitches, whose only crime is being female and fertile. The greatest dog essay, though, would consider more than condemn, recognizing that we all struggle in this dog-eat-dog world.

We struggle, but dogs make it a little bit better, and just when you start to feel overwhelmed with dog sadness, the greatest dog essay would remind you of the joy of rescue dogs, who come to you broken, miserable things and then quickly adapt to happiness. It would transition from darker side, not in denial but with the resolute resilience of a dog rebounding from a scolding by plopping a ball in his human’s lap, every muscle tensed for the throw, making waiting the most active verb ever, and you know that however much you love your own dogs, however much they’re the perfect culmination of canine evolution, are in fact the best dogs ever in the whole entire world, you would never clone them, like some celebrities might, knowing that there are even more dogs out there with more ways of being dog that you haven’t experienced yet, more than you could experience in a lifetime.

Perhaps this essay, having started with the nose, would end with the tail. Soft, swooshy, feather-duster tails and coffee-table clearing tails and thick, muscular tails that leave welts and sideways-curling tails and brush tails and up-and-over scorpion tails. Tails that tell emotions: stiffening to rigid alertness, flattening subordinately to cover escaping odors, whooshing warningly, or happily splashing their scents to all who know how to smell their greeting. Let other people doubt that dogs experience what humans know as emotions: the tail says otherwise. As does the acquisitive nose, twitching questioningly before the big sniff. The nose seeks the tail, or under-tail, of another, leading to the nose-to-tail circle-dance, that dog-to-dog handshake.

The greatest dog essay ever might itself do the nose-tail circle dance, reminding the reader that, seriously, dogs smell in stereo. Just imagine. The reader would return to her own dog—her ordinary, everyday, endlessly shedding, ever-pooping, tail-wagging, tail-drooping, tail-wagging dog. Perhaps he’s drowsing on the couch next to her and, sensing something different in his human’s fingers, raises his nose, thumps a tail once, twice, only half aware that his human will never again see him in quite the same way, that she’s feeling something beyond his emotional register, some bizarre hybrid of grateful and amazed, a feeling that, to be accurately expressed, would require something more physical than words. It might require a tail.

In the past two decades there has been an explosion of comparative studies centering on the emotional lives and sentience of a wide array of nonhuman animals (animals). Much of this research is summarized in the new edition of my book, The Emotional Lives of Animals: A Leading Scientist Explores Animal Joy, Sorrow, and Empathy— and Why They Matter to which approximately 300 new references have been added since the first edition was published in 2007. 1 In the first edition I wrote, “Twenty years from now, our understandings and explanations will be richer, more accurate, and possibly different.” I had no idea I’d ever be writing a second edition, but 17 years later, my prediction is accurate. The real question at hand is why animal emotions have evolved, not if they have. We are well beyond making vacuous claims such as that other animals are merely acting "as if" they have feelings. 1

Prairie dog and grizzly bear mothers grieve for their dead children

Family-living prairie dogs, who many people write off as “merely rodents,” also grieve. A few years ago while riding my bike north of Boulder, I observed a moving interaction between an adult black-tailed prairie dog, who looked to be a female, and a youngster, most likely her child, who had been killed by a car. It looked like the accident had occurred a few minutes before I happened on the sorrowful scene, and I stopped and dictated some notes into my phone to document what I saw: Five times, the adult prairie dog tried to retrieve the carcass of the smaller prairie dog off the road. She clearly was trying to remove the carcass from the road, and eventually, the cars stopped and allowed her to finish. She dragged the carcass about ten feet away, looked at me and looked at the carcass, and then went back to the carcass and touched it lightly with her forepaws. After this, she walked away emitting a very high-pitched vocalization. I waited a few minutes to see what else she would do, and as she moved back toward the carcass again, she looked at me and stopped, so I left because I didn’t want to disrupt her saying goodbye, if that was what she was doing. Prairie dog expert Dr. Con Slobodchikoff told me he was not at all surprised by what I saw. It's also important to share what we learn with a broad audience. 2

Another vivid example comes from world-renowned photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen who has studied a wild grizzly bear mother, "399," for more than 20 years. In response to one of her children, Snowy, being hit by a car, Mangelsen noted that 399 dragged her mortally wounded cub from the middle of the highway with her mouth and paced back and forth, bawling and panting. He's been quoted as saying , “If that isn’t an example of sentience, of grief and pain in a mother, then what is? .... How can anyone not empathize?”

The biodiversity of sentience is rapidly expanding

For years I’ve argued that these “educated guesses”—actually, highly educated guesses — about animal emotions were not anthropomorphic projections but reflected as-yet-unproven facts that would one day be strongly supported by comparative scientific research. That day has come, and you’ll find many examples in the updated book. The biodiversity of sentience is rapidly growing. As the research and stories in my book show, mice are empathetic and fun-loving, and there are stories of pleasure-seeking iguanas, humorous horses, amorous whales, grieving otters, bereaved donkeys, pissed-off baboons, sentient fish, and elephants suffering from what mirrors post- traumatic stress disorder. Recent research has shown that elephants may remember their relatives for around 12 years by smelling their dung. If that’s so, there is no reason they couldn’t also remember traumatic experiences for long periods of time. Animals also clearly recognize feelings in other animals—that is, they possess what psychologists call emotional intelligence , or the ability to understand one’s own emotions and those of others.

Compassionate Conservation and the Importance of Individuals

Of course, protecting animals requires us to understand and respect their emotional lives and the importance of each and every individual. This has sparked the growing field of compassionate conservation, which regards the life of every individual animal as a valued gift—and this paradigm shift can benefit all animals. 3 Compassionate conservation asks us to consider what's best for each individual animal, whether in captivity, in our homes, or in the wild. All individuals have intrinsic or inherent value and must be able to live the lives they are meant to live—to express their natural behaviors and proclivities, to be who they are, and to get what they need. Animals are not here for us to do whatever we want with them.

Would you do it to your dog?

Recognizing that animals have emotions is important because their feelings matter. Animals are sentient beings who experience the ups and downs of daily life, and we must respect this when we interact with them. This includes not only the animals we live with, care for, and love — those we consider our “companions”—but also the billions of other domesticated animals who live on farms and die in slaughterhouses and provide us with food and clothing. And it includes wild animals who must continually struggle to share our ever-crowded world. Needless to say, our relationships with other animals are complex, ambiguous, challenging, and frustrating, and we must continually reassess how we should interact with our nonhuman kin. Part of this reassessment involves asking difficult questions and making sure our actions match our understandings and beliefs. Thus, I often ask researchers who conduct invasive studies with animals, or I ask people who work on factory farms: “Would you do that to your dog?” Some are startled by this question, but it’s a very important one to ask. If we wouldn’t do something to our companion animals that we do daily to mice, rats, monkeys, pigs, cows, elephants, chimpanzees, or even noncompanion cats and dogs, we need to ask ourselves why.

Animal emotions and sentience must matter to us as they matter to the animals themselves

What should we do with what we know? What sorts of choices should we make? We must use what we know on behalf of all animals. I will admit that I get cranky and irritable now and again. I’m tired of reading studies and essays about animal behavior , animal cognition , animal emotions, and animal sentience that trumpet new discoveries and then end by saying something like, “We need to treat other animals better—with more respect, compassion, kindness, and dignity.” Of course we do.

These banal platitudes of pain don’t do anything for me. Why does the U.S. Federal Animal Welfare Act still write off lab rats and mice as not being animals , and why, as of 2022, can more pigs be killed per hour in slaughterhouses than previously allowed? We need a breakthrough paradigm shift in how we treat other animals and a call for heartfelt action on their behalf, one that leads to changes in our laws, regulations, and animal-human interactions. That’s what I hope the new edition of my book will help achieve.

Since the first edition was published in 2007, the field of cognitive ethology— the study of animal minds—has exploded, and now hardly a day goes by without there being some exciting new information about the cognitive, emotional, and moral lives of animals. I’m pleased and excited to have had the opportunity to update this book and share this information with a wide audience. I also wrote, “When it comes to the emotional lives of animals, science is just trying to catch up to what people experience every day.” Science still is. When I first began my studies some 50 years ago, researchers were almost all skeptics who spent their time wondering if dogs, cats, chimpanzees, and other animals—mostly mammals—felt anything. Since feelings don’t fit under a microscope, these scientists usually didn’t find any; as I like to say, I’m glad I wasn’t their dog! But thankfully, today, the burden of proof now falls most often on anyone who still argues that animals don’t experience emotions. When writing about the inner lives of animals, my colleagues and I no longer have to put scare quotes around such words as happy, sad, jealous, guilty, compassionate, or empathetic . Scientific journals and the popular press regularly publish reports on joy in rats and grief in elephants, and no one blinks. And more scientific outlets are allowing researchers to refer to animals by name rather than by anonymous and distance-making numbers, a practice that Jane Goodall pioneered in her groundbreaking and ongoing research on wild chimpanzees.

Why a Dog’s Death Hits So Hard

I loved my mom more than my dog. So why did I cry for him but not for her?

M y mom died six years ago, a few hours after I sat on the edge of her bed at her nursing home in Georgia and talked with her for the last time. My wife, Alix, and I were staying with my brother and his wife, who lived just down the road. My brother got the phone call not long after midnight. He woke me up, and we went down to the nursing home and walked the dim, quiet hallway to her room. She was in her bed, cold and still. I touched her face. But I didn’t cry.

Two years earlier, the veterinarian had come to our house in Charlotte, North Carolina, to see our old dog, Fred. He was a yellow Lab mix I had found as a puppy in the ditch in front of our house. We had him for 14 and a half years, until he got a tumor on his liver. He was too old for surgery to make any sense. Alix and I held him in our laps as the vet gave him two shots, one to make him sleep, the other to make him still. All three of us cried as he eased away in our arms.

By any measure, I loved my mom more than our dog. If I could bring one back, I’d pick her 100 times out of 100. So why, in the moment of their passing, did I cry for him but not for her?

That was one of the many questions in the back of my mind as I began to explore a fascinating subculture in the dog world: the dog-show circuit that culminates in the biggest event of all, the Westminster Dog Show. I wanted to understand the dogs and their human caretakers, the bond between them, and, more broadly, why the loss of a dog can hit so hard—harder, sometimes, than the loss of a person.

I spent three years on the road with show dogs, handlers, judges, and other dog people who roam the country like Deadheads with hair spray. I came to think of the world of dog shows as a traveling theme park called Dogland. It has its own rules, its own language, its own blend of sights and sounds and scents. It is generally a pleasant place. But it is built on a foundation of loss. Because everybody involved knows the cruel math built into loving a pet: Chances are, it will die before you do.

At a show near my home in Charlotte, I met a dog breeder and handler named Michelle Parris. Parris shows Italian greyhounds, known in Dogland as “IGs” or “iggies.” If a standard greyhound is a Dodge Charger, and a whippet is a Mustang, an iggie is a Mini Cooper. Regular greyhounds run 60 to 70 pounds , but a standard iggie weighs about 10. Parris loves iggies’ delicacy, their playfulness, the gorgeous S curves of their hind legs and back and belly. She used to show them frequently—even got one of her dogs into Westminster.

But in 2019, her life began to crumble. It started when she and her longtime partner, Mike, broke up. They split on good terms—he continued to back her dog-show dreams, emotionally and financially—but she decided to step away from the ring for a while.

In early 2020, COVID hit, and dog shows were canceled all over the United States. That fall, Mike died of heart failure. And the following March, one of Parris’s favorite dogs, Sky Guy, got sick. She drove him to a vet in West Virginia who is known in Dogland as an IG expert. He told her that Sky Guy had an incurable autoimmune disease. IGs usually live for 14 or 15 years. Sky Guy was not quite six.

Mike’s death had hurt Parris. But Sky Guy’s death nearly broke her. She had panic attacks. Friends came to help take care of her other dogs. Months passed before she was able to feel stable again. She told me this story in the middle of an arena lobby, with the general chaos of a dog show flowing all around us. It was a long, tearful conversation. But every so often, she would pause our chat to point out an especially beautiful dog walking by.

“We’re very passionate about our dogs,” she said.

Dogland is an odd place in that way. The dogs there are commodities—purebreds designed to draw top dollar for their “show quality,” the physical excellence and charisma required to become a champion show dog. The best of the best make money for their owners by delivering litters of other potential champions, or providing sperm that can be frozen indefinitely to create a lineage decades down the road. (A company called Infinity Canine sets up a tent at some big shows to collect semen from promising males. Their slogan: “Dogs love to come to us!”)

But dogs aren’t widgets. The people I met in Dogland had genuine affection for their animals, even when they were handlers who might be juggling 15 or 20 dogs at a single show. Most of the top handlers don’t own their dogs. The owners send them off to the handlers like parents might send a child who has a booming forehand off to a tennis academy. A show dog’s peak is four or five years at most. And then the handler, after bonding deeply with that dog, has to give it back to its owners. It is a rehearsal of sorts for the permanent parting.

M aybe the best way to illustrate the idea that people sometimes mourn harder for dogs than for humans is to tell the story of one grieving middle-aged retiree.

His wife, Helen, died after a long illness. Her death knocked him sideways. She left him a final gift and a note to go with it: John, I’m sorry I can’t be there for you. But you still need something, someone, to love, so start with this. John wept as he put down the note and looked at the crate that came with it. Inside was a beagle puppy named Daisy. John and Daisy bonded.

One day John was at a gas station, filling up his Mustang—a car his wife had bought him. Another car pulled up to the pumps. The men in the car turned out to be Russian-mob thugs. One of them, the mob boss’s son, admired John’s car. He asked John to name a price for it. John said it was not for sale. This upset the son.

That night, the thugs broke into John’s house, beat him senseless, and stole the car. During the beating, Daisy ran through the room whimpering. The mob boss’s son told one of the thugs to shut her up.

When John regained consciousness, he saw a trail of blood on the floor. Daisy had crawled to him and died by his side.

And that was the moment John Wick decided to come out of retirement and return to his life as the world’s most feared assassin.

I should probably be clear right here that John Wick is the fictional hero of the massively popular movie franchise starring Keanu Reeves. Just roll with the character for a moment. John Wick loved his wife more than anything. But the death of his dog released something deep inside him. He grieved hard. So damn hard. And the anger it released was a renewable resource: According to online body counts, during the course of four movies, John Wick kills more than 400 people—including those Russian-mob thugs.

At one point in the first movie, after Daisy is killed and John sets out to avenge her, the mob boss captures John and prepares to have him executed. The mob boss makes the fatal mistake of so many movie villains: First, he wants to talk. He has something to say: “It was just a fucking car. Just a fucking dog.”

“Just a dog,” John says, and lowers his head.

He goes on: “When Helen died, I lost everything, until that dog arrived on my doorstep. A final gift from my wife. In that moment, I received some semblance of hope. An opportunity to grieve unalone.”

Moments later, he escapes his captors and resumes his trail of vengeance.

You already know this story if you are one of the millions of people who have watched the John Wick movies. But some people know only one detail. Because, before deciding whether to see John Wick , they looked the movie up on a website created to answer a particular question about any movie. The question is embedded in the site’s name: doesthedogdie.com .

There, they discovered the answer was yes. And they decided they could not watch.

O f course, it’s not just the members of the Dogland road show or characters in movies who mourn their dogs deeply. One of the people I interviewed for the book was Scott Van Pelt, the anchor of the late-night SportsCenter broadcast on ESPN. In 2022, he gave a moving on-air eulogy for his family’s Rhodesian ridgeback, Otis. Van Pelt heard from thousands of viewers all over the world. I talked with him not long after about why Otis meant so much.

“There have been a couple of moments after he died that you just come in and sit there and know that he’s not coming and it’s just—”

“That absence, right?” I said.

“Oh God, it’s so heavy,” he said. “I’ve lost people. I’ve lost my dad and I’ve lost grandparents and it’s not comparative, but the difference is that this animal was with us every day of our life and in all ways of our life and was here every moment of our children’s lives. He’s the corner puzzle piece. So many things connect to that. You could put your whole puzzle together, and there’s that one corner that’s missing.”

Van Pelt was pointing to a couple of the reasons I think the death of a pet can hit harder, in the moment, than the death of a human loved one. The simplest reason is that, as he said, a pet is around you all the time. Most people don’t spend as many continuous hours around their parents, other family members, friends, even their grown kids. In many cases, a pet lives with its owner nearly every minute of its life, from wriggling puppyhood to final sleep. Its absence is profound.

The deeper reason is that our relationships with humans are far more complicated. We argue even with the people we love, and sometimes the conflicts crack us wide open. Every birthday, every Thanksgiving, builds upon a long and sometimes fraught history. There are things we can’t forget, though they might be long forgiven. Loving another human being can leave bruises and scars, even if every single one is worth it.

Loving a pet is simpler. Dogs, especially, live to please us. It is the way they have made themselves essential to our lives. Dogs don’t fight at the dinner table or have obnoxious political viewpoints. They don’t slam the door when they leave the house. They don’t ask why you’re not married yet.

When we mourn a dog, we mourn a life we often witnessed in full, and a source of something close to an unadulterated good.

When we mourn a human, even one we love deeply, our emotions are messier. That does not make our grief lesser. It just makes it part of a bigger experience, like an egg mixed into batter. At some point, you can no longer separate it out.

After spending all that time in Dogland, I came to think of it this way: When a loved one dies, it matters more. But when a dog dies, sometimes we feel it more.

W hy did I cry in the moment for my dog and not my mom? Maybe for all the reasons I’ve already talked about. But also, maybe, because I had cried for her, and with her, so many times already. I cried in her arms when I was a boy and fell in a patch of sandspurs. I cried on the phone when I got fired from my internship and had to slink back home. I cried when we argued about her smoking and my eating. I cried laughing when she would tell the story about the time the neighbor’s python got loose. I cried when we moved her out of her house and we both knew she was never coming back. I cried at her bedside in her final days when we said we loved each other. My grief for her was paid in full.

Tommy Tomlinson: The weight I carry

A dog might be able to sense those moments, but all we really have to go on is our own feelings. As close as humans are to dogs—a connection formed over thousands of years—parts of their world are still unknowable to us. That space between feeling and knowing—that’s where the tears live. But the people you love, if the connection is deep enough, become knowable in every dimension. And if you love someone enough, the tears don’t wait for death. They’re an essential part of life.
