Online Degrees in Engineering Management

Online PhDs in Engineering Management are on the rise as institutions adapt their offerings to meet the needs of a diverse and growing student population. However, they are still not very popular. The benefits of studying online are very easy to see. You don’t have to relocate or commute, many programs allow you to work according to your own schedule, face-to-face meetings are minimal, and online programs typically cost less than traditional programs. However, finding the right program can be difficult.

We have done the research and ranked the Best Online PhD Programs in Engineering Management, to help you curate a list of prospective schools to consider. All of the institutions featured were ranked according to the following.

Methodology

In order to rank the best online PhD programs in engineering management, we started by researching all of the schools in the country that offer relevant degrees. In order to be eligible for placement in this ranking, each school had to have proper accreditation, not operate as a for-profit institution, be based in the United States and had to offer at least one relevant program online whether fully-online or in a hybrid format.

Once we had collected a list of schools, we assigned them a score based on three factors:

  • Freshman Retention Rate (⅓ of final score)
  • Graduation Rate (⅓ of final score)
  • Affordability (⅓ of final score)

Each factor could have an individual score of 100 points, which were then added together to get the composite score we used to rank each school . The maximum possible score was 300 points. We collected all of this information from the school’s website when it was available. In some cases, we also used the databases of the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. News & World Report , and Niche.com. All of the cost data used to calculate affordability and provide you with the average cost of attendance for each school was collected from CollegeData.com. Once each school was scored, they were placed in order accordingly.

We’d like to mention that no school we have featured in this ranking (or in any of our other articles) has been given preferential treatment for any reason. Some schools may not be present due to incomplete information or according to their own request; however, the results we reached can typically be repeated by following the methodology above.

We have also ranked the top 10 online engineering degree programs, which is another resources you may find helpful in your college search.

Is Engineering Management a Good Degree?

engineering management phd online

Because of the unique nature of engineering, an MBA may not provide you with the skills you need in order to move up to higher-level management positions. Additionally, MBA programs don’t build upon your background in engineering in any way.

The creation of the engineering management degree was the perfect answer to that. These degree programs include a curriculum that builds on your technical expertise in your area while adding to that with skills in accounting, economics, project management, organizational behavior and leadership, and more. Engineering management programs also offer areas of focus on their own, so you have the opportunity to find a program that is specific to your field.

In order to move up to the managerial positions you’re after, you will need an academic foundation to support that. Degrees in engineering management provide you with the foundation you need, but the curriculum is designed to put it in context according to your industry. There is nothing better than an industry-relevant degree that advances your knowledge and increases your career prospects.

What Colleges Offer Engineering Management?

How to Choose the Best Online Engineering Management Degree  Programs

Before settling on a program to receive your PhD in engineering management online, you have to evaluate a variety of factors. They include:

Accreditation demonstrates the quality of education in a particular school. Look for programs that are accredited by recognized accrediting bodies. Proper accreditation means that the program meets certain quality standards. Many employers and other educational institutions check the school’s accreditation before accepting a graduate.

Research the reputation of the program and the faculty members who will be teaching the courses. Look for programs with experienced faculty who have expertise in engineering management or related fields. Explore their research interests, publications, and industry experience to make sure they can help you achieve your education goals.

Review the curriculum and course offerings of each program you are considering. Check that the program covers a broad range of topics relevant to engineering management. They can include leadership, innovation, project management, operations management, and strategic planning. Look for programs that offer courses taking which can help you meet your career goals.

Consider the flexibility and convenience offered by the online program. Look for programs that allow you to balance your academic pursuits with your personal commitments. Assess the online learning platform and resources provided to make sure they can help your studies instead of making your life harder. Check for the availability of interactive tools, virtual collaboration, and support services.

If you plan to focus on research, consider the relevant opportunities available within the program. Look for online schools that help you conduct original research, publish scholarly articles, and collaborate with faculty. High-quality research opportunities can enhance your learning experience and contribute to your professional growth.

Look for programs that provide academic advising, technical support, library access, and career services. Consider the availability of networking opportunities, connections with industry professionals, and access to research facilities.

Research the program’s alumni and their experience. Explore where previous graduates have gone on to work and the positions they hold. This information can provide insights into the program’s effectiveness. You can use Facebook and other social media resources to find your potential school’sl alumni groups and ask relevant questions there.

Consider the cost of the program and any available financial aid opportunities. Evaluate the overall value of the program in relation to the tuition fees. Contrary to the common misconception, tuition for online programs isn’t lower than for offline studies. However, you can save money on housing and transportation.

Review the program’s time to completion and graduation requirements. Some programs may have specific residency requirements, comprehensive exams, or a dissertation component. Check that the program’s requirements align with your ability to make a commitment. Some programs may dismiss students if they don’t finish their PhD within a specific amount of time (usually about seven years).
