Solid foundation

Strathclyde has been a pioneer in the field of educational psychology for almost a half a century, making significant contributions to research, practice and education policy.

The journey of educational psychology at Strathclyde reflects a commitment to understanding, improving and transforming the landscape of education through psychological insights. This historical overview showcases the university's achievements, milestones and enduring impact in this crucial field.

Global outreach and support

Strathclyde's educational psychology students gained international recognition for their research and expertise through our celebrated MSc programme, DEdPsy and research publications.

The university hosts conferences, workshops, and seminars that attracted scholars, practitioners, and policymakers from around the world. This global outreach not only expanded our influence but also facilitates cross-cultural knowledge exchange and collaboration.

Professional standards

The HCPC has updated its standards of proficiency for the first time since 2015. The crucial changes have been made following an extensive period of engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, to seek views and develop standards in line with current professional practice. The revised standards set clear expectations of registrants' knowledge and ability in a healthcare landscape which has changed and evolved in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Updating the standards was a crucial component in fulfilling our purpose to promote excellence in the professions we regulate, and champion high-quality care that the public can acces safely and with confidence. The biggest change for EPs is regarding continuing professional development.

Continuing our relationship with our doctoral graduates

At the University of Strathclyde, we are people-centred and our commitment to education extends beyond degrees. About Dedpsy Educational Psychology in University of Strathclyde

Research opportunities

The DEdPsy is a flexible research degree designed to meet the needs of practising Educational Psychologists (EPs) with at least one year’s experience in the field. The course combines applied psychology with high quality real world research in a variety of vital and complex educational issues. It provides a framework in developing rich evidence based practice and self-reflection.

The programme takes a distinctive approach to a professional doctoral qualification through its focus on research rather than taught modules, research having been identified in the Currie Report (2002) as one of the Educational Psychologists’ core activities. Furthermore, the equal division of credits between two elements of the course, Research and Professional Practice, emphasises that this is a professional doctorate and maintains coherence in the balance between academic and professional elements in the MSc in Educational Psychology.

Aims and learning outcomes

The aim of the Doctorate is to develop:

  • research skills in design, data collection and analysis leading to the submission of an original thesis that makes an identifiable contribution to knowledge in an area of developmental/educational psychology
  • a critical academic understanding of current advances in theory and research within a specialist area of professional expertise
  • effective, critical and reflective independent professional practice using a range of assessment and intervention approaches that are underpinned by psychological paradigms and are evidence-based

Intended learning outcomes will focus on the development of the following key skills:

  • research and critical analysis skills
  • academic and professional knowledge of current advances in an area of developmental/educational psychology
  • critical and reflective practice that is evidence-base
  • ecological-systemic practice at levels of casework, consultancy and research/policy development

Our research explores essential aspects of human mind and behaviour, such as language, higher-level thought, self-regulation, and social connections. We aim to understand humans in various contexts through a lifespan perspective, addressing questions at neural, behavioural, and societal levels.

Furthermore, we apply our research to make a positive impact on society, collaborating with local councils, charities, and corporations for optimal outcomes.

Our research focuses on two themes:

  • Social inclusion and health
  • Human communication and learning

Overview of Professional Doctorates

Our Professional Doctorates are designed for people already working in their fields who want to boost and refine their knowledge and skills in an academic setting. The programme has two parts: a two-year taught phase with classes worth 180 credits, and then a two-year research phase where you dig into issues related to your current field of work. At the end, you present and defend your thesis in an oral exam. Successful candidates will attain a doctoral degree that is equivalent to a PhD.

Professional Doctorate researchers usually have a lot of hands-on experience and benefit from a structured teaching plan that helps them grow as scholars. The programme uses a mix of online and in-person classes, making it a good choice for people who work and want to study part-time. It's especially good for those who want to bring an academic or theoretical approach to their professional work.

Trainees have a placement in a psychological service prior to the commencement of teaching in the first year. Teaching, in the form of seminars/ workshops and tutorials, takes place in the University on Mondays and Tuesdays during term. Wednesdays are study days. Trainees spend Thursdays and Fridays in their long-term placements with a psychological service. In the first year, trainees spend this time in shadowing and observation, practice-based assignments and in carrying out a collaborative group project. In the second year, the focus shifts to an ‘apprenticeship’ role, with trainees tackling the work of an educational psychologist under the supervision of their practice tutor. There is a separate individual project in the second year. There are also additional block placements which enable trainees to broaden their experience. This involves work in other psychological services and further placements outside the context of the educational psychology service, for example working with professionals whose specialism is social work, psychiatry or clinical psychology. Programme Content: The programme consists of lectures, seminars and tutorials on the following topics: Frameworks for EP Practice: Pre-School – Post-School, Development in Context, Contextualised approaches to assessment and intervention, Practitioner research and evaluation, Transferable practitioner skills , and professional practice. In addition, by the end of each of the first and second years they must have submitted three essays of approximately 6,000 words each and a project report. At the end of the second year they must also attend two oral examinations. The final assessment will be based on the candidate’s performance in all the elements listed above
