This paper presents a multi-criteria classification model for spare parts management. Maintenance operations, in particular corrective ones, involve a great amount of spare parts inventory that often is one of the main part of the immobilized capital in many industry firms. The proposed model as a mainstay for an effective spare parts management. The meaning is to support managers in the proper spare parts management inventory choice for each component through the evaluation of a different number of criteria. A three step scale of evaluation for each criteria is generated, considering all the possible values. Each criteria is weighted through the application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process. On this basis a decision tree is generated in order to lead managers to the definition of the appropriate management policy for each material, requiring only a single value for each attribute. The aim of this work is a model definition in order to manage spare parts inventory in a more efficien...

Important spare parts should be kept in stock and their inventory properly controlled to replace worn and/or defective components with new ones and minimize downtime in various maintenance activities. However, the possession of spare parts in stock for ready availability (when necessary) may entail, in the case of expensive and rarely used parts, high inventory retention costs. In this work, an approach is presented to evaluate the criticality of spare parts using the AHP method with the use of ratings (Analytic Hierarchy Process Ratings Model). The structure of the elaborated decision hierarchy is related to the consequences caused by the failure of a spare part in the process, in case a replacement is not readily available with demand and supply attributes, segmenting the priorities by the Vital, Essential and Desirable criteria (VED). The proposed model was applied in very low turnover spare parts of an integral organization of an intensive capital company located in the South Fl...

Inventory constraints, costs of lost production, safety and environmental objectives, strategies of maintenance adopted, logistics aspects of spare parts are some of the criteria taken into account, and spare parts classification is thus defined with respect to multiple attributes. In virtue of the large number of the potential operational characteristics to be considered, the decision diagram is integrated with a set of analytic hierarchy process models used to solve the various multi‐attribute decision sub‐problems at the different levels/nodes of the decision tree. An inventory policy matrix is defined to link the different classes of spare parts with the possible inventory management policies so as to identify the “best” control strategy for the spare stocks. The principles of the theory and an actual application in a company operating in the paper industry are reported in the paper.

Control of spare parts is very difficult as demands can be very low (once in a few years is no exception), while the consequences of a stockout can be severe. While in the past many companies choose to have very large spares inventories, one now observe trends in areas with good transportation connections to keep spare parts at the suppliers. Hence it is very important to make a good selection of which spare parts to stock at the start-up of new plants. To this end Shell Global Solutions has developed an electronic decision tool, called E-SPIR. In this report we analyse the decision rules used in it. We consider stockout penalties and advise to use criticality classifications instead. Furthermore, we investigate minimum stock levels, demand distributions and order quantities.

Spare parts management is a function of maintenance management that aims to support maintenance activities, giving real-time information on the available quantities of each spare part and adopting the inventory policies that ensure their availability when required, minimizing costs. The classification of spare parts is crucial to control the vast number of parts that have different characteristics and specificities. Spare parts management involves mainly two areas, maintenance and logistics. Therefore, the integration of both input information is recommended to make decisions. This paper presents a multi-criteria classification methodology combining maintenance and logistics perspectives that intends to differentiate and group spare parts to, subsequently, define the most appropriate stock management policy for each group. The methodology was developed based on a case study carried out in a multinational manufacturing company and is intended to be included in its computerized maintenance management system to support decision-making.

Purpose – Spare parts management plays a relevant role for equipment-intensive companies. An important step of such process is the spare parts classification, enabling properly managing different items by taking into account their peculiarities. The purpose of this paper is to review the state of the art of classification of spare parts for manufacturing equipment by presenting an extensive literature analysis followed by an industrial assessment, with the final aim to identify eventual discrepancies. Design/methodology/approach – Not only is the attention put on the literature about the subject, but also on an on-field analysis, that is presented comprehending an extensive survey and two in-depth exploratory case studies. The copper mining sector was chosen being representative for the case of capital intensive plants where the cost of maintenance has relevant weight on the total operating cost. Findings – The paper highlights the status of the scientific literature on spare parts ...

One of the most important activities in preventive maintenance is replacement of spare parts prior to failure. The aim of this paper is to propose an approach which determines jointly the preventive replacement interval and the spare parts inventory by considering different criteria and interacting with decision makers. In this approach, preventive replacement intervals, determined by experts of production and maintenance, are ranked by the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Criteria such as cost per unit of time, availability, remaining lifetime, and reliability are used. Then, a mixed integer nonlinear multi-objective model is presented that simultaneously specifies the period of preventive replacement and the required number of spare parts. This model considers the mentioned criteria and the inventory control costs of spare parts as different objective functions. Since the solution of the problem depends on the decision maker’s strategy, it needs to interact with the decision-ma...

— Information systems play a major role in the global marketplace and influence decision making process in day to day business activity. One of the problems found in business activity is allocating a limited resource. Problem can be resolved with a system developed using Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM) model and Multi Objective Decision Making (MODM) model. MODM model will define the design for the best alternative and MADM model provides complete selection for several alternatives which have limited resources. MADM model is used to simplify the mathematical form of MODM. MADM model approach, such as Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is used for cardinal characteristic data format. Decision-maker provides values for weighing criteria as an input to the TOPSIS methods, values are calculated with Entropy methodology. The output of TOPSIS methods will provide rank to several alternatives. The rank of alternatives become the decision variables in mathematical MODM model for linear programming to resolve the problem of limited allocated resource. Finally, decision support system defines ranks of selected stores and it also presents the capacity of each store for distributing spare part.

Today an efficient warehouse and inventory management of spare parts for production machinery is essential for service organizations. Optimal strategies in procurement, stocking and supply play an important role for serviceability in spare parts management. In this context, individual item criticality should be considered, which describes how crucial a spare part is. This paper presents a three-dimensional classification approach for spare parts regarding a cross-plant central warehouse strategy of a service network. The approach uses two dimensions to estimate value and predictability of spare parts with aid of an ABC and XYZ analysis. The third dimension VED analyses a multi-criteria criticality classification and six feasible criteria are identified to describe item criticality. The methodology of the analysis is based on a decision tree, which represents the defined criteria by nodes. In addition, the analytic hierarchy process is used to solve the multi-criteria decision problems at the different nodes of the decision tree. The approach is developed in a research project and evaluation of spare parts is performed based on real inventory and transaction data in cooperation with an industrial company. As a result 15,000 out of 50,000 items could be classified as suitable for central warehousing.

  1. Criticality classification of spare parts: A case study

The first step of the multi-criteria classification process is the identification of relevant criteria impacting item criticality. It was decided to approach item criticality from two perspectives as proposed by Huiskonen (2001): process criticality and control criticality.A spare part is considered process critical if its failure or malfunction can result in severe consequences for the plant ...

  2. Criticality classification of spare parts: A case study

Spare part criticality can be defined as the impact from a shortage of stock (Molenaers et al., 2012). Some studies on classification systems consider a distinction between aesthetic (less critical) and functional parts (more critical) (Bacchetti et al., 2013), proposing different service levels and safety stocks for the two categories.

We can distinguish four levels of criticality ranging from highly critical (criticality level 1) to non-critical parts (criticality level 4).
