Has the internet killed literate communication?

Like the rest of what is no longer exactly new, but is undoubtedly still evolving technology, emails rank high on the list of those developments which with nary a backward glance have destroyed the world as we know it .

They have? So it appears. They promote illiteracy (the adoption of texting-style abbreviations and acronyms), they undermine proper thought (no measured consideration when you can fire one off so fast), they foster rudeness (no topping and tailing of the missive in the traditional manner, no capital letters for goodness' sake, and what about poor old granny , who probably still thinks the typewriter is a girl, not a machine?).

And to top it all, in abandoning the front-door mailbox to little more than junk mail, bills and bank statements, in their absolute ephemerality they have wilfully jettisoned a vast and vital national historical resource: the letter.

Ah, the letter. Love letters, hate letters, bread-and-butter letters, letters of fawning admiration, letters of self-righteous complaint, letters of record, observation, opinion. The pen ... the ink ... the Basildon Bond. A physical object. A collectible object. A record, for researchers, of a whole side of non-official life. And now immersed wantonly in a tide of new-tech.

The telephone was elected the culprit some time ago, but email - 177bn every day (okay, 72% are spam, but still...) - has long since ousted it. Not, dare I suggest, that many seem to care. A search on Google for "email" + "decline of letter-writing" brings up but 86 hits. Not exactly a major tearjerker.

Because with computing still expanding at remarkable rates, email (and its attentuated cousin texting) has become, for most people, the primary means of non-verbal communication. And for every old school argument, there a counter.

Illiteracy: must friendly communications really depend on perfect spelling? Immediacy: well, some might suggest that the speed of email's hither-and-yon has returned us to the level of the three- and four-times a day post of Victorian England - efficiency of which Postman Pat can only dream. Rudeness: again, society has long since bowed to a greater informality, and the truth about granny is that she's probably synchronizing her iPod with one hand and downloading movies with the other.

Only the ephemerality accusation is harder to reject. Because it's true. Emails are not meant to last, for all the snooping of our secret services and police. But if there are no letters to collect, what can the poor historian do?

All is not lost. As May ends, so too does the " Email Britain " campaign, which for the last month has asked the British public to submit what they feel are memorable or significant mails (whether sent or received) for inclusion in a digital archive that, backed by Microsoft, will be stored at the British Library.

Around 14,000 mails have been submitted, offered up to files labelled Blunders, Life Changing Emails, Complaints, Spam, Love and Romance, Humour, Everyday Emails, News, World Around You, Tales from Abroad. Whether the Great British Public will come up with the goods remains debatable.

Certainly, the examples the BL offers are pretty thin stuff: less than exciting (and never more than 2MB long) tales of proposals on the London Eye, of trips to the Kate Moss outlet at Top Shop, of office trivia. They offer a tone, but this is hardly, to name a couple of prolific letter writers, Kingsley Amis or Hunter S Thompson, let alone Thomas and Jane Carlyle, generally seen as epistolatory communicators supreme.

Nor does it seem, to cite another attempt at populist history, to offer the breadth and intimacy of the Mass Observation surveys of the 1930s, when trained observers plunged into the British street and brought back the conversations they overheard.

Would we collect telephone calls? Probably not. And in the end emails are a means of communication, rather than record. They are meant to die, and so they do. The campaign has lasted but a month. Whether it will be renewed is unknown. Nor whether it matters. The blog, the best of which have thought, opinion, observation and more besides, might be better worth storing.

Now there's an idea: let's mail the British Library.

The internet is arguably the most influential invention made in the last half a century. This creation has had immense impact on the world with person’s personal and professional lives being influenced by this innovation. The internet has invaded most aspects of human life with its use spanning from industries as diverse as health care provision to mining and manufacturing.

This wide application of the internet has made it hard for people to envision a world without the internet. For most people, it would be impossible to operate efficiently if the internet was not there to provide quick and effective communication. However, the internet has contributed to some negative outcomes in society due to its attributes of efficiency and ease of information provision. This paper will argue that the world would be a better place if the internet had not been invented.

The information available on the internet has contributed to the rise in violence in our society. The internet contains a wide array of information on all topics. Some of the information contained pertains to violence and how a person can engage in acts of violence. There are websites that offer in-depth information on how to create a homemade bomb or even how to convert a handgun into a semi-automatic weapon.

This information has been used by various individuals to carry out acts of violence against members of the society (Schmitt 1). In the recent Boston bomb attack, the perpetrators used the internet to gain information on how to turn pressure cookers into deadly bombs that were used to carry out the terror attacks. The Norwegian terrorist, Anders Breivik who killed 77 people and injured at least 110 more is reported to have used the internet in his preparation for the brutal attacks.

Proponents of the internet argue that individuals with violent tendencies will find a way to carry out attacks even without the help of the internet. They argue that a person who wants to commit a crime can get the information they need from books or use traditional weapons such as guns and knives. While this is true, the internet has made it easier for the violent people to access dangerous information with little effort. This has increased the danger that such individuals pose to our society.

The internet has contributed to making the world an unsafe place by making it easy for international terrorists to operate. The prevalence of global acts of terror in the last decade has made international terrorism the greatest danger to world security.

Terror attacks in major cities such as New York, London, and Madrid have caused world leaders to recognize the devastating effect of international terrorism. The internet has assisted in the growth and development of international terrorist organizations. Schmitt reveals that the internet plays a role in the recruitment and radicalization of terrorists in countries all over the world (1).

For example, radical clerics have been known to post radical sermons online and gain many followers all over the world. The radical messages have contributed to the prevalence of “home grown” terrorists who communicate hateful messages through the internet. In the Boston bombing incident, the two brothers are reported to have been influenced and radicalized by the Islamic Cleric, Anwar al-Awlaki whose sermons provided the motivation for their deadly attacks (Schmitt 1).

The al-Qaeda terror network is known to use the internet extensively to spread its hateful messages and inspire acts of terrorism against Western targets. Without the internet, terrorists would not have such an efficient medium through which to spread their messages. It is therefore conceivable that the world would be safer without the internet to facilitate the spread of international terrorism.

The internet has given governments the tools with which to engage in pervasive surveillance of their citizens. While we live in an open community where freedom is guaranteed, the government may want to keep track of its citizens. In the past, attempts by the governments to engage in surveillance have been met with resistance.

However, the internet has provided an efficient and cheap means for the governments to track people and keep records of their communication often without their consent. By gathering information from sources such as Internet Service Providers, search engines, and Social Networking Sites, the government can build profiles of individuals and invade privacy. A report by the CNN ominously warns that thanks to the internet, “our surveillance state is efficient beyond the wildest dreams of George Orwell” (Schneier 1).

The internet has made it possible for a person’s private information to be accessed and stored by third parties. The US government has engaged in spying activities on its own citizens without their consent or knowledge. The internet has therefore contributed to the dramatic infringement of personal privacy by the government and made our society less free.

The internet has played a part in the prevalence of moral decay by providing individuals with decadent material. The internet is the largest repository of information in the world. Among this information is material of a questionable moral caliber such as pornography. A report by the BBC states that four in every ten individuals who use the internet are subjected to pornographic material (1).

This report is corroborated by the fact that the pornography industry has grown into a multi-million dollar industry with many pornography websites appearing online. Pornography is damaging to the society since it leads to a pervasion of sexual acts and promotes acts of violence such as rape.

Reports indicate that many convicted rapists and child molesters cite pornography as a trigger to their damaging actions (BBC 1). Proponents of the internet argue that there was still decadent material in the society before the invention of the internet. They claim that photographic material could be obtained through magazines and even bootleg tapes. These claims are true since offensive material has been in the society since the invention of the printing press.

However, the spread of this material before the internet was restricted and it occurred in a regulated fashion. A report by the BBC reveals that since the arrival of the internet, “pornography is far more readily available and less regulated” (1). Without the internet, it would be harder for people to access pornographic material. The society would therefore be protected from the negative effects of this decadent material.

Advocates of the internet assert that is has contributed to the growth and development of society. Industries and Businesses have benefited from improved efficiency and effectiveness due to the internet. Increased productivity in organizations has resulted in economic growth, which is a desirable outcome for the society.

The internet has also enhanced scientific research and innovation by making it easy for various professionals to work collaboratively through the internet. It has increased the research abilities of various professionals therefore contributing to the development of our society. Knut asserts that the internet has served as an enabler for all forms of innovation in the society (1). This positive attributes of the internet are all true and the prevalence of the internet has greatly affected societies and the economy.

However, it should be noted that innovation and research would still have occurred even without the presence of the internet. Economic growth and prosperity was in action for decades before the advent of the internet. What the internet has done is increase the rate at which economic growth and technological advancement has taken place in society. It would therefore be wrong to assume that there would be no development if the internet was not invented.

While the internet has been hailed as the “most important technology” developed, it has led to much harm to society. This paper has argued that the world would be a better place if the internet had not been invented. To buttress this assertion, the paper has highlighted how the internet has contributed to the rising insecurity and violence in the world. The internet has made it easy for international terrorism organizations to expand their influence.

It has noted that governments can infringe upon the freedom of their citizens more efficiently because of the internet. The paper has also highlighted the contribution that the internet has played to moral decay. However, the paper has also acknowledged the positive contributions that the internet has played in society. Even so, the positive contributions are outweighed by the negative influences that the internet has had. It can therefore be declared that the society would be better off if the internet had never been invented.

Most of us use our cell phones and computers to inform, make requests of, and collaborate with co-workers, clients and customers. The digital age has connected people across the world, making e-commerce and global networking a reality. But does this reliance on technology, also mean we are losing the ability to effectively communicate with each other in person?

Ulrich Kellerer thinks so. He is a leadership expert, international speaker, and author. According to Kellerer, “When it comes to effective business communication, over reliance on technology at work can be a hindrance, especially when it ends up replacing face-to-face, human interaction.”

Carol Kinsey Goman: You were the founder and CEO of Faro Fashion in Munich, Germany. What did you discover about business communication in this role?

Ulrich Kellerer: The digital age has fundamentally changed the nature and function of business communication. It has blurred international boundaries allowing people to connect with each other across the world. Communication is mobilized and instantaneous, and it is easier than ever to access and share information on a global scale.

However, I’ve also seen the negative impact of digital communication on business both internally and externally. While digital methods themselves are not detrimental – in fact many devices help us boost productivity, increase and inspire creativity -- it is our intensifying relationship with the digital environment that leads to unhealthy habits that not only distract us from the “present,” but also negatively impact communication effectiveness.

Goman: In the midst of a digital age, I believe that face-to-face is still the most productive and powerful communication medium. An in-person meeting offers the best opportunity to engage others with empathy and impact. It builds and supports positive professional connections that we can’t replicate in a virtual environment. Would you agree?

Kellerer: Connection is critical to building business relationships. Anyone working in sales knows that personal interactions yield better results. According to Harvard research, face-to-face requests were 34 times more likely to garner positive responses than emails. Communication in sales is complicated. It requires courtesies and listening skills that are simply not possible on digital platforms.

Interpersonal communication is also vital for a business to function internally.  While sending emails is efficient and fast, face-to-face communication drives productivity. In a recent survey, 67% of senior executives and managers said their organization’s productivity would increase if superiors communicated face-to-face more often.

Goman: In my research on the impact of body language on leadership effectiveness I’ve seen the same dynamic. In face-to-face meetings our brains process the continual cascade of nonverbal cues that we use as the basis for building trust and professional intimacy. As a communication medium, face-to-face interaction is information-rich. People are interpreting the meaning of what you say only partially from the words you use. They get most of your message (and all of the emotional nuance behind the words) from vocal tone, pacing, facial expressions and body language. And, consciously or unconsciously, you are processing the instantaneous nonverbal responses of others to help gauge how well your ideas are being accepted.

Kellerer: While digital communication is often the most convenient method, face-to-face interaction is still by far the most powerful way to achieve business goals. Having a personal connection builds trust and minimizes misinterpretation and misunderstanding. With no physical cues, facial expressions/gestures, or the ability to retract immediately, the risk of disconnection, miscommunication, and conflict is heightened.

Goman: Human beings are born with the innate capability to send and interpret nonverbal signals. In fact, our brains need and expect these more primitive and significant channels of information. When we are denied these interpersonal cues, the brain struggles and communication suffers. In addition, people remember much more of what they see than what they hear -- which is one reason why you tend to be more persuasive when you are both seen and heard.

In addition to eye contact, gestures, facial expressions and body postures, another powerful nonverbal component (and one that comes solely in face-to-face encounters) is touch . We are programmed to feel closer to someone who’s touched us. For example, a study on handshakes by the Income Center for Trade Shows showed that people are twice as likely to remember you if you shake hands with them.

Kellerer: Business leaders must create environments in which digital communication is used strategically and personal communication is practiced and prioritized. Technology is a necessary part of business today but incorporating the human touch is what will give businesses the competitive edge in the digital marketplace.

It is possible to find families where the members no longer sit and have decent conversations. This has been mostly promoted by the social media and the increased access to phones that can browse the internet. People are too preoccupied with their friends on the social media. As a result, they stay glued to the screens of their phones that they do not have time to spend with their actual friends and families (Oberzaucher, Grammer, & Schmehl, 2010). When there was no internet, it was very easy to make friends and acquaintances. When one was lost, he/she could ask for directions from other people. Such people could end up becoming friends or important acquaintances. Because of excessive use of the internet, it is not easy to pay attention during face-to-face communication with others. When one is trying to communicate with another, who is busy chatting on the internet, the conversation does not yield anything. Many children have felt neglected by their parents, who cannot pay attention to what they are trying to tell them (Bitti, & Garotti, 2010). With face to face communication, it is easy to notice and give gestures that give meaning to communication. It is also easy to listen keenly and be emotionally present when communicating with one another. People can express their feelings to others who are able to respond adequately to such feelings. This builds confidence and trust among friends and family members. Further, teaching in class did not only involve imparting knowledge but also non-verbal communication of values and other essentials of life from the teacher to the students. Today, however, classes are taken online. Students who attend classes in campus also do not concentrate on what the tutor is communicating because they are busy updating their social media profiles and chatting (Harrington, & Loffredo, 2010). The internet is an efficient tool in communication, but people must be careful not to let it kill our communication skills. Face to face communication is still a very essential tool for building relationships. The internet should be used to enhance communication between people who are far away from each other, but it should not replace face-to-face communication between people who are next to each other. People must learn to put aside the internet when they are holding face to face conversations with one another.

Does Intenet Kill Communication?

The internet has had a significant impact on communication in recent years, and opinions on the effects of this technology are divided (Turkle, 2011). On one hand, the internet has made it easier for people to stay in touch with one another, regardless of distance. Online communication tools such as email, instant messaging, and social media have made it possible for people to connect with others in ways that were previously impossible (Hampton, 2011). This has led to the creation of virtual communities, where people from all over the world can come together to share ideas and information (Wellman, Haase, Witte & Hampton, 2001).

Additionally, the internet has made it possible for people to access a vast array of information (Kirschner & Karpinski, 2010). This includes news, educational content, and other forms of knowledge that can help people to communicate more effectively (Warschauer & Matuchniak, 2010). The internet has also enabled the development of e-commerce and online marketplaces, which have made it possible for people to conduct business and trade goods and services with one another (Brynjolfsson & Saunders, 2010).

On the other hand, some people argue that the internet is making it harder for people to communicate effectively (Turkle, 2011). The abundance of information available online can make it difficult for people to distinguish between credible and unreliable sources (Kirschner & Karpinski, 2010). This can lead to the spread of misinformation, which can have serious consequences (Allcott & Gentzkow, 2017). Additionally, the anonymity of online communication can lead to trolling and other forms of abusive behavior (Suler, 2004). This can create a toxic environment that is not conducive to effective communication.

The use of the internet has also been associated with a decline in face-to-face communication (Twenge & Campbell, 2009). With the ease of sending a message or email, people may be less likely to have in-person conversations. Research has suggested that this decline in face-to-face communication can have negative effects on social skills, empathy, and overall well-being (Baumeister, Twenge, & Nuss, 2002).

Moreover, the internet has also created a culture of constant distraction and multitasking, where people are constantly bombarded with notifications and messages (Fried & Aricak, 2014). This can lead to information overload and make it difficult for people to focus on a single task or conversation (Van der Meijden, 2019). This can lead to a decrease in productivity, and can make it difficult for people to engage in deep and meaningful conversations.

In conclusion, it’s true that the internet has had a profound impact on communication (Turkle, 2011). However, it’s not accurate to say that the internet kills communication. The internet is a powerful tool that can be used to enhance communication in many ways (Hampton, 2011). However, it’s important to be mindful of the ways in which the internet can make it harder to communicate effectively, and to take steps to mitigate these effects (Turkle, 2011). This includes being thoughtful about the information that we consume, and taking steps to limit distractions and multitasking (Fried & Aricak, 2014). And also being more personal and direct in our internet-based communication.
