In spite of the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry. Why is this the case? What can be done about this problem?

I agree that poverty is a major contributing factor to the persistence of hunger, despite advancements in agriculture. Developing the economy is indeed crucial in addressing this issue.

While agricultural progress has significantly increased food production, the problem of hunger persists due to the prevalence of poverty. Even in countries with advanced agricultural technologies, such as India, a large number of people live in extreme poverty. Despite being one of the largest food producers globally, millions of Indians face the daily struggle of inadequate income, with some earning less than one dollar per week. As a result, they are unable to afford sufficient food and suffer from starvation.

To tackle hunger caused by poverty, it is essential for governments to prioritize economic development. Many individuals living in poverty lack skills and opportunities. By fostering a strong and growing economy, even those without specialized skills can find employment. Governments can attract foreign investment, opening up their countries to new business opportunities. For instance, the entry of companies like Amazon into the Indian market has created numerous warehouse jobs for unskilled local workers. Such stable employment provides the poor with a regular income to meet their basic needs and support their families.

In conclusion, despite advancements in agriculture, hunger remains a persistent issue due to the widespread poverty experienced by many individuals. Governments play a crucial role in addressing this problem by focusing on economic development. By creating job opportunities, even for the unskilled, governments can empower the poorest segments of society to earn a living and access an adequate food supply.

Task 2 Essay: Agriculture

Question: In spite of the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry. Why is this the case? What can be done about this problem?

Band 8+ Sample Answer:

(Intro) It is argued that despite significant developments in agriculture, a large number of people across the globe still suffer from famine and malnutrition. I believe that two main causes of this are that some countries lack access to advanced technology, as well as the problem of political corruption. These issues can be mitigated through foreign aid in the form of technology transfer and stronger monitoring of potentially corrupt regimes.

(Body 1) One of the main causes of hunger across the world is a lack of sharing of technology. In recent decades great advances in technology have been made in developed nations such as the US, Canada and those in the EU which can dramatically increase yields and also the quality of the crops which both lead to increased profits for farmers and less risk of famine and malnutrition. However, partly due to the high costs involved, these techniques and machinery are owned and controlled by big international companies who are unwilling to give poorer countries access without paying the full price. One possible solution could be if governments of rich countries subsidised the purchase and running costs for farmers in developing countries. This would aid both, tech companies, poor farmers and reduce hunger.

(Body 2) Another potential cause of this grave situation is political corruption. Many developed countries provide significant annual foreign aid to their poorer neighbours, especially those who are struggling with a lack of food supply. Unfortunately some of these countries have unstable governments, and many of the leading politicians are corrupt. Therefore a significant proportion of the aid budget is not used for its intended purpose and instead ends up being pocketed by those administering the scheme. One way to tackle this would be through increasing the rules attached to foreign aid donations and stronger independent monitoring by the United Nations to ensure that the aid is being invested in projects to increase food supply.

(Conclusion) I accept that although the world has the means to eliminate hunger completely, many people still suffer on a daily basis, which is partly due to an unequal distribution of technology, as well as corrupt politicians. I believe these issues can be dealt with through tech subsidies and better regulation of the foreign aid budget. This issue is a clear example of how unequal the world is. It is a big challenge for current and future generations. (391 words).

With passing times, new technological advancements in agriculture emerge and are being implemented. However, despite these advancements, many people throughout the world continue to suffer from hunger and famine. In the following lines, I shall discuss the causes of food scarcity and possible solutions for such issues. 

Several variables contribute to the global condition of hunger. Despite agricultural advancements, the problem of food storage is becoming more prevalent in many nations. Low-income families often go hungry and run out of money, and because of that, they rely on a limited amount of food. Moreover, small-scale farmers lack appropriate storage facilities for their supplies, causing pests and adverse weather conditions to harm their crops. Additionally, growing overpopulation is another factor that has contributed to food scarcity. As the world’s population grows every day, there aren’t enough crops cultivated to feed them. Another factor that has contributed to food scarcity or famine is food waste. Many well-developed enterprises, such as restaurants, prepare food in large quantities. People, on the other hand, do not eat all of it. As a result, any remaining food is discarded in garbage cans.

In order to avoid wasting food or decrease hunger and starvation amongst people all over the world, people should take proper measures, and avoid food hoarding. Many have a habit of buying more food than needed. Instead, individuals should purchase the necessary food and preserve it for later use. Furthermore, individuals should store their food properly. Fruits and vegetables that are stored incorrectly decay rapidly. Establishments like restaurants should make it a routine to give away surplus meals to those in need. Besides that, governments should provide storage facilities to small-scale farmers so that no harvests are lost, and food supply imbalances are effectively addressed. Apart from that, the government should impose strict regulations to control the growth of population.

To summarise, people starve because of poor food storage and usage. However, appropriate steps, such as financial assistance, can help prevent food waste and ensure it reaches those who need it most.

Band 9 Sample Essay

The scarcity of food has always been an issue globally, especially in developing countries. In recent years, there have been many technological as well as an agricultural breakthrough which has incremented the yield of edibles. Despite this, there is a vast section of the world population that goes malnourished. In this essay, the determinants of this predicament and some remedies will be considered.

The first and foremost cause of famishment is the uneven distribution of resources that leads to irregular production of food. For example, in India, the cultivation of crops is limited in the mountainous and desert regions due to the unproductive terrains and climatic conditions, while the plains are engaged in extensive agriculture. This results in more food production of crops in the flatlands, whereas the people in the hilly and arid locations get fewer food options. Secondly, this erratic allocation of natural stock leads to escalation of transportation and storage prices, increasing the overall cost. While affluent people do not face any difficulty, the poverty-stricken can barely afford the basic sustenance. Additionally, unpredicted circumstances like natural calamities, pest attacks, turbulent weather and inappropriate storage conditions can lead to the withering of nourishing products and leave a large population to crave food. Other than these factors, overpopulation is an escalating problem that leads to starvation. The rate at which the population is surging is not proportional to the production of food. Due to this high demand and various other factors, the deprived are unable to avail food and are dying of a paucity of daily meals.

In order to safeguard the future generation from further deprivation of food, the government should work hand in hand with the populace. Although nothing can be done about the asymmetrical distribution of natural resources, the food problem can be mitigated to certain extent by making the public aware of usage of high-yielding crops, irrigational facilities, and other technologies and making these scientific methods readily available to all farmers. Apart from this, the government can provide storage facilities at subsidized rates so that the gross price does not increase. Further, food wastage can be shunned, and the surplus food in restaurants, hotels, and ceremonies can be distributed among the people who cannot afford it. Finally, it is recommended that the government and non-government organizations work together to create jobs that can employ the needy and they can cater to their needs.

To sum up, it is true that even after progress in agriculture technologies, a large section of the world population is still perishing from different ailments caused due to undernutrition. So, it is high time that each individual takes the matter of food waste seriously and supports the government to provide the best facilities to control inflation and other facilities.

While significant progresses have been occurred related to ‎farming methods, there are considerable number of people ‎who are suffering from malnutrition because of lack of food. In ‎this essay I will consider some reasons of this problem then I ‎will provide some solutions for it.‎ It is not deniable that agriculture has progressed a lot but it ‎possesses to wealthy nations such as developed countries. In ‎the western countries for instance, latest methods of farming ‎are utilized whereas, in developing and poor nations there is ‎lack of access to this advancement. As a result, most of people ‎are struggling to provide their basic needs such as food. ‎Additionally, there is a gap between rich and poor all over the ‎world. While, for wealthier nations there is enough budget to ‎dedicate for nutrition, people in poor countries are not able to ‎buy enough food for themselves so they stay hungry.‎ In spite of this, there are two solutions for addressing the issue. ‎At first and for most, the gap between poor and rich countries ‎should become less with reforming governments policies. By ‎way of example, governments specially who are international ‎such as UNICEF and United Nations ought to provide much ‎more funding for poor countries to provide living needs for ‎them. Furthermore, non-profit organization could run ‎campaigns for exporting knowledge of advanced agricultural ‎methods to developed countries and any spot in the world ‎where is in need of it. As a result, the number of people who ‎access to new methods of farming enhances.‎ To sum up, there are two important reasons related to high ‎number of hungry people around the world in spite of ‎advanced agriculture which are unbalanced distribution of ‎facilities and knowledge of advanced farming between poor ‎and wealthy nations and the existence of financial gap in ‎providing enough food. With the advance in science, more techniques are adopted in agricultural issues and which doesn’t totally translate well into food security of people across the globe. The unforeseen weather conditions and the abrupt political situations are the contributing factors and to tackle that problem, environment has to be preserved on both governmental and individual levels and wars should come into an end.

The first contributing factor is the unpredictable weather conditions due to climate change. For example, the majority of framers in Indai are suffering attacks from disasterous weather conditions, such as draught, deluge and strong winds. Every year, farming has been uneconomic business due to the less productivity. One effective solution might be fostering immediate actions such as imposing carton taxes on factories, reduction of plastics and commuting with public transports. Even though the effects might be barely noticable on individual levels, the involvement of government by cooperating with various international organizations might lead to a huge improvement.

Another factor that contributes to the problem is wars. Due to wars, country has to face economic plunge and refugee camps have become the homes of people with the lack of lands and chances to do agriculture, leading to the food storage. To handle that issue, negotiation between both political parties have to implement and the international alliances are supposed to give a hand by not supporting weapons to the terrorists.

By implementing the above solutions, this damaging problem might be able to mitigate to some extent.

Over time there were improvements in many different fields and agriculture was one of them. One might think that with these advances, a lot of problems such as starving can be solved, but the thing is the world is witnessing that many individuals around the glob still are so poor that they cannot eat anything. In this case many various reasons can be named, and I want to explain some of the reasons and solutions. To begin with, starving is mostly the problem of developing countries. This stems from the fact that most of the technology in this specific area is belong to developed countries, and despite having the technology, they do not give accessibility to any of the formers. For example, many people in Africa still go hungry because they do not have the possibility of farming in dry areas, meanwhile United States has accessed to such technology since years ago. In particular these developed countries have a tendency to export their products to the poor ones in exchange for money or their resources like oil. However, had these reach countries gave the technology to the poorer or taught them how to produce different products, the issue might have been solved, and many devastating results would not have come across. On the flipside, some international organizations are working on the issue. They tend to establish a situation in which developing countries can profit the technology. In this case, these countries have the opportunity to ameliorate their citizen’s lives without having to jeopardize their valuable resources. Also there could be another solution, and that is the loans that some organizations like World Bank give to some countries providing that they spend it for the extension and infrastructural development. In conclusion, the world is divided to two parts; which are developed and developing countries. The latter need the help of the former and other organizations in order to improve itself in the field of agriculture and tackle the problem of starving.

The main parts of the prompt are incompletely addressed. The format may be inappropriate in places. The writer expresses a position, but the development is not always clear. Information and ideas are generally arranged coherently and there is a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used to some good effect but cohesion within and/or between sentences may be faulty or mechanical due to misuse, overuse or omission. The resource is limited but minimally adequate for the task. Simple vocabulary may be used accurately but the range does not permit much variation in expression. A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is used but flexibility is limited. Examples of more complex structures are not marked by the same level of accuracy as in simple structures. Although the world keeps developing and the technologies are better, there are also still so many problems left to solve such as food shortages, increasing amounts of waste and population, etc. For human beings, as eating is one the necessary things to survive, the hunger problem becomes a prioritised problem. Even though scientists are making agricultural techniques more advanced and advanced, the effects on the main problem is relatively very small. It is pointing that we should focus more on the cause of the problem.

The number of people in developing countries who are facing hunger problems are relatively massive compared to developed countries. The developing countries are the countries which still can’t focus on the technologies because they have many other problems to solve which are more important. It is also clear that they won’t afford such high technologies in fields like agriculture which are usually done by lower class people in such kind of countries. On the other hand, the people from developed countries are producing way more foods and most of them are being wasted.

To solve these problems, there are many ways to be acted and also acting now.In general, most of the global problems should be solved by developed countries because of rich technologies and finance. First thing that should be done is to decrease the amount of waste and to provide these to the needs. They should welcome more refugees especially countries which are facing food scarcity. Second thing would be to sell the modern agricultural things with affordable amounts to the farmers. There are also things that can be done by the government of these developing countries such as making agriculture more widespread among wealthy people and sharing technological ideas to people who are making agriculture.

All in all, we all can participate in solving the global hunger problem by decreasing waste, making charity and volunteering in agricultural fields. We can learn modern techniques and make our backyard-gardens useful. It is also important for us to solve our own problems because we shouldn’t just be waiting for the help of the other developed countries.

Here is this week’s  IELTS Model Essay . It’s an IELTS Problems Solutions Essay on the topic of hunger.

Cambridge IELTS Academic 13 Test 4

I will first plan this essay using my 4 Step Planning Process .

Step 1: Understanding The Task

The topic statement says: “In spite of the advances made in agriculture, many people around the world still go hungry.” So it’s NOT asking you  “why do people go hungry?” – if it were, you could simply say that they forget to eat! It’s asking you “why do people go hungry despite agricultural advances?” This narrows down the topic.

Step 2: Decide Your Position

Your position is your answer, so for this task, my position is my answer to the 2 questions:

• Why is this the case? (i.e. the causes of the problem)
• What can be done about this problem? (the solutions )

Personally, I think the main causes of hunger are:

• climate change
• extreme poverty

And I think solutions include:

• emergency food relief

Step 3: Extend Your Ideas

Next, I need to develop my ideas . This step is essential to get a Band 7 or higher for Task Response. So I need to take my main ideas from Step 2, and add some detail to these points. Here is my more detailed plan, with supporting information (e.g. explanations and examples):

Causes of hunger:

• war displaces people -> may be hard to get food in new place
• hard to farm land in war zone
• drought – lack of water -> plants and livestock die
• hotter temperatures -> affects crops and animals
• too much water -> floods – can destroy crops
• urban areas – hard to buy food if poor / can’t grow food in cities
• farming communities – people sell of livestock for money if poor -> unable to far,
• emergency food relief (famine relief, WFP, food banks)
• education: teach farmers about techniques, nutrient-rich crops
• GM food: controversial but more resistant to drought / disease

There’s quite a lot here, so I might not write everything in my final essay!

Step 4: Structure Your Essay

Finally, I need to decide how to organise these ideas. In other words, which paragraphs will contain each of these ideas and supporting details.

I could simply do this:

Hunger continues to be a problem around the world despite agricultural advances such as improved crop yields and new harvesting technologies. This essay will consider some reasons for this, along with both short and long-term solutions.

One of the main causes of extreme hunger is war, which tends to displace thousands and sometimes millions of people as they flee conflict, making it difficult for them to get access to food. War can also make it difficult for farmers to engage in daily farming or to gather in the harvest, which can exacerbate food shortages.

Climate change is an additional cause of hunger. Drought makes irrigation impossible, causing crops to die off and livestock to die, while flooding caused by heavy rains can destroy plants.

Urban inhabitants, even in developed countries, can be victims of hunger. Those in extreme poverty may find it hard to feed themselves more than once a day because of increased prices, and the fact that they live in cities means they can’t grow their own food.

One obvious solution is to provide emergency food supplies to the hungry. The UN’s World Food Programme is one organisation that has provided effective emergency famine relief in regions affected by war and drought, while food banks can provide assistance to people living in urban areas. However, these are only short-term solutions.

Longer term solutions include better training for farmers, especially in the developing world. This could include advice on how to implement more efficient agricultural techniques as well as on how to grow more nutrient-rich crops. Although controversial, the increased use of genetically-modified foods may provide another long-term solution, as it could lead to the cultivation of crops more resistant to drought and disease.

In summary, global hunger is caused by a number of factors, including war, climate change and poverty, but emergency food supplies, education and GM foods can be used to help alleviate the worst of the problems.

Band 9 Vocabulary

This essay uses a wide range of vocabulary in a natural way. This vocabulary also explains and illustrates my ideas in a very precise way. In particular, I use lots of natural collocations – groups of words. IELTS Examiners want to see groups of words like these in the higher bands.

I’ve also used several complex noun phrases. These are all groups of words that act as a single noun, but contain more than one grammatical item.

Global hunger continues to be a longstanding challenge that affects individuals from a broad range of backgrounds and regions worldwide. This essay explores the persistence of global hunger despite progress in agriculture and outlines solutions to combat it, including reducing food waste, alleviating poverty, and mitigating the impact of natural disasters through policies and programs that empower individuals and provide basic necessities.

There are several reasons why many individuals globally go hungry. Firstly, food wastage is a major contributor to the issue. Sample Essay 3

Nowadays, even though many progresses have been made in agriculture, there are still many individuals who cannot get enough food. The main reason for this is the increase of population density, and of social inequalities in developing countries. However, economic and technical support by western countries, and the development of local democratic governments can be viable successful solutions.

Nowadays, although modern techniques are applied in agriculture to increase production of vegetables and fruits, many people are still hungry, especially in developing countries, due to the enormous growth of population and to social instability, which can also cause regional wars. In fact, it is well known that the birth rate is very high in less developed nations in geographical areas such as Africa, South-East Asia, Central and South America. This causes a huge increase of inhabitants in these regions, and consequently a continuous high demand of food, which cannot be satisfied. Moreover, these developing countries have social instability, which in some cases can cause riots, damaging the possibility to develop agricultural productivity. In addition, local fights are frequent due to rivalry for the control of mining resources, and this can destroy farms and plantations, worsening an agricultural industry that is already in crisis.

On the other hand, it is possible to adopt some solutions to ameliorate agriculture, such as financial aid and technical support, and by fostering the development of democratic governments. It is well known that to increase the agricultural production of a country, it is necessary to allocate enormous economic resources by the rich nations, and they should channel them into developing countries. In addition, technical support with skilled technicians and new agricultural vehicles are essential to increase the production of vegetables, fruits, and in many cases of livestock too. This is because technicians can build new wells and new irrigation systems, which are indispensable to improve agricultural productivity. Furthermore, it is necessary to favour the development of democratic governments, which can carry out reforms to modernize agriculture in rural areas and redistribute the economic resources. This would noticeably improve food availability, and people quality of life.

In conclusion, even though many technological advancements have been made in agriculture, many people cannot get enough food, due to the demographic growth in developing countries, and to social support by western countries, which should also foster the development of democratic regimes.

Topic # – Farming

Q1. Have you visited a farm?

Being a nature enthusiast, I have visited farms numerous times. Whenever I get bored with the hustle and bustle of the city, I prefer to visit countryside areas to get clean and pristine air.

Q2. What kind of farm do you like?

I like farms which have a tubewell inside them. During scorching heat, I prefer to bathe in the lush green farms to feel refreshed.

Q3. Do you think farming is important?

Yes, farming is important because of two reasons. Firstly it pampers the appetite of people. The determination, dedication and discipline of millions of farmers at their workplace provide us with food to eat.

Moreover, farming employs a large section of society. There are many nations like India whose economies thrive primarily on agricultural imports.

Q4. Did you do farm work when you were young?

During my college days, I visited my grandparents in the countryside. They had big farms, and whenever I would go there, I would provide them with unabated support in various tasks.

Q5.What are the benefits of small-scale farming compared to large-scale agriculture?

Well, there’s a big difference between small-scale farming and farming at the big scale. First, the budget we usually see for farmers is generally based on loans,  so I think a shortfall for small-scale farming is helpful for those who cannot spend too much money on their crops. Apart from that, large-scale farming has other benefits too, like the more you grow your land, the more money you will earn, but there are also some drawbacks, like extensive large-scale farming requiring more money and more time. We also have to take a lot of precautions while conducting large-scale farming.

Q6. Have you ever visited a farm ?

Yes, we have our farms, and needless to say, I visited there a couple of times. We usually grow sugarcane crops on our farm, which we then transfer to our sugar mill. And apart from that, we also like to plant some particular kinds of lentils and rice on our farms.

Q7. Do you think it’s important for people to know where their food comes from ?

Yes, I think in this contemporary era, we have a lot of pesticides in use to grow crops in no time. So definitely I think people should know the value of the products, like whether they are organic or they are pesticides because it’s it has an effect it has a profound impact on their healthy lifestyle healthy life so yes I think people should check before eating their products.

Q8. What are some common crops or animals that are farmed in your region?

 In my region, buffalo and cows are mostly the primary source of dairy foods, so people like to keep them as pets and earn money.  If I talk about the crops, people usually grow wheat, some lentils, corn, and sugar. Apart from this, sugarcane cultivation is also widespread in my region.

Q9. How do you think advancements in technology have impacted farming practices?

 Technology has a significant role in farming these days because, with technology, people are very advanced in growing. Farmers change their ways of growing crops. For example, like the first farmers, the cultivators had to spread the seeds with their hands.

 But now we have machines like cultivations, a cultivator which helps them to put seeds in a deep soil and apart from that we can now check the measure of the water like how much water a crop needs which is suitable for their growth and apart from that like recently see in a Dubai the artificial rain due to the artificial rain has been proven very useful to grow crops in that in such kind of area like Dubai and Abu Dhabi we are all where we where they have them in Dubai and Abu Dhabi regions.

Q10.Would you consider living on a farm in the future?

 No, I don’t have any plan to live on a farm in the future because many factors caused me to change my mind, first of all, the pesticides used by farmers. I don’t want to put people’s lives in danger by using pesticides, but at the same time, I prefer organic farming. It is challenging and complex and needs more money, and our government gives very little support to the farmers. Therefore, I wouldn’t prefer to do farming in the future.

Q11.How do you think climate change affects farming? 

Well, there are a lot of differences that can be seen in the climate changes on farming first of all like in India, like in my region we usually get plenty of rain in, we can say torrential rain in like in the past which is good for the crops like rice and lentils. Still,  the rain rate has dropped by 30%, and we have only had rain for two to three months now. It’s occasionally, so the government has to give extra water to motors and the turbines, so I think that’s a difference that can be seen in the climate changes in farming.

Q12.Do you think organic farming is better than conventional farming?  

Definitely, yes.  Despite being costly, it has a lot of significant advantages to society compared to the other products that are growing in the use of pesticides. They are not suitable for people’s health, and we only put people’s lives in danger by using pesticides just for the sake of money. I think organic farming is essential for people’s holistic development.

Q13. What role do you think government policies should play in supporting farmers ?

 The hefty amount of money needed for subsidies or loans should be a prudent measure a government can undertake to support their farmers. Apart from that, the government should conduct campaigns and organize meetings to educate farmers about the growth of the newly growing farming techniques.  The government can take wise steps to support their farmers’ rights.
