500 Words Essay on Television

Television is the best thing to have in house. One of the most widely used technologies for entertainment in the world today is the television. Nowadays, practically every home has a television, and it has become fairly widespread. In the beginning people didn't want to use it but now everyone wants it in their house. This was primarily due to the focus on entertainment during that time. There weren't as many educational channels as there are now. Nowadays what you see on television is because of technology.

After the invention of television, the craze attracted many people to spend all their time watching TV. Parents started considering it harmful as it attracted the kids the most. Because kids spend most of their time watching television and not studying. However, as times passed, the channels of television changed. More and more channels were broadcasted with different specialties. Thus, it gave us knowledge along with entertainment.

Benefits of Watching Television

There are many advantages to the development of television. Television gives the average person access to a low-cost kind of entertainment and knowledge about the world. Now that televisions are not so expensive, everybody can buy one and have access to entertainment.

Television keeps us informed on the most recent world events. News from various parts of the world can now be obtained from television. Similarly, television also provides instructional shows that advance our understanding of science, animals, and other topics.

People are inspired to learn new skills by television as well. Additionally, television has a number of shows that feature presentations from motivational speakers. This show encourages people to improve their skill and lifestyle. You may also argue that television increases our exposure. Television broadens our understanding of many sports, world events, and other topics.

While television comes with a lot of benefits, television also has a negative side.

Disadvantage of Watching Television

We see that television broadcasts unsuitable material that encourages various social evil acts, like violence, eve-teasing, and more. Additionally, watching television for long periods is bad for our health. Our eyesight will deteriorate if we watch television for long periods of time. Our neck and back will also be painful as a result of our bad posture while watching TV.

Television also turns people into addicts. People avoid social connection because of their TV addiction. As a result, kids spend more time alone in their rooms, which has an impact on their social life. They become vulnerable due to their addiction and take their programmes way too seriously.

My Life Experience

When I was kid I used to watch television very much which affected my studies and physical health. After that my mother gave me some valuable tips about health and told me the disadvantages of television. I reduced the hours I spent watching TV and went to play games on the ground. After some time I noticed my health getting better and my mind becoming clearer. Television is good when people watch in their limits. But when people exceed their number of hours, then it will affect their mental health and body health. Television is beneficial because it gives knowledge about all the world and shows low cost entertainment.

Television Essay in English: 350 Words

Television is a modern invention. When television was first invented, people of the world were very happy because they had the scope to know the world around them and to entertain themselves in the best possible ways. Television is no doubt something which ushered progress of civilization. Some electronic media like BBC took over the most important role to make the people of the world aware of the society to which they were belonging and the environment by which they were being nourished. It is quite well known that, BBC produced all of the plays of Shakespeare as films. Even this world famous electronic media focused on the two World Wars so much so that people of the world came to know how horrible was war and warfare. Thus social consciousness was an important factor that was first aroused by the aid of television.

But this television is now being abused constantly by some commercially debased people. In West Bengal, television is so abused that the young generation is now misguided. The young people follow the bad culture and become oblivious of the hoary tradition of our country. Mere entertainment has been presented on the different television channels. Meaningless serials and reality shows are heart-throbbing without any moral impact. Crimes and social disorder are presented so crudely that the minds of the young people are overwhelmed with frustration, dilapidation, and despair. It seems that there is no escape from despair. The ultimate result is social alienation which brings about moral dilemma.

Yet, the concerned authority is really callous to the problems. Advertisement, sponsors, etc. are the sources of the economic structure of the different channels. Thus, the producers intend to draw the attention of the businessman by claiming the popularity of the channels. The inevitable result of this kind of commercial debasement is of Course disintegration that causes serious disbelief in the sphere of culture and education. Therefore, we must be conscious of the fact that television is not merely a media for entertainment; rather it is a source of important social and cultural messages.

The Television

The television is a popular entertainment device. It is very common and is found in almost all households. When the television first started broadcasting, it was known as the "Idiot Box” because at that time, the only purpose of television was to provide entertainment. Now, with the advancement of technology and creativity, television has emerged as an important mass media. There are many learning and informative channels on the TV today which act as the source of knowledge as well as entertainment.

The word "Television" comprises two words: "tele" and "vision". Tele is a prefix of Greek origin, which means far-off, which is used in creating names of instruments for operating over long distances, whereas vision means the act or faculty of seeing. “Television” can be termed as a device with a screen for receiving signals.

The Perspectives of Television

The television was first invented by a Scottish scientist, John Logie Baird. Originally, it was capable of displaying monochromatic motion images (or videos). With advances in technology now, we have coloured TVs and even smart TVs. Children and adults depend on television for their entertainment. People spend a lot of their leisure time watching television. This may lead one to wonder whether it is really a good practice to spend so much time on the television. There are certain advantages and disadvantages of television beyond doubt.

The Advantages of Watching Television

An Inexpensive Source of Entertainment: Television is now a very cheap mode of entertainment. Televisions are not very costly, and apart from a very minimal service fee, one needs nothing more to be entertained. Televisions are a great entertainment option for people who live alone or cannot go out often. Televisions are cheap enough to be affordable for all.

Provides Knowledge: Television has a number of services, like news channels and so on. These channels and services help us stay up-to-date with the latest news all around the world. Television also offers educational programs, which help us expand the horizon of our knowledge. We get to learn about science, wildlife, history, and so on.

Gives Motivation: There are programs on television which motivate people to develop certain skills. There are programs of motivational speakers which inspire the viewers to push themselves to excel in their line of work.

The Disadvantages of Television

Like every other device, television too has some demerits alongside its advantages.

Inappropriate Content: Television has barely any measures to prevent segregation of mature and adult audiences from younger audiences. Thus, when a piece of content is aired, it can be viewed by all. As a result, the younger section of the audience is exposed to inappropriate content.

Addiction: Studies have shown that watching a lot of television can get addictive. Television addiction helps lower social activities and promotes inactivity. This makes children more susceptible to mental as well as physical illnesses.

Fake Information: A lot of television content is aimed to spread misinformation for views and ratings. This kind of misinformation can hinder social and communal harmony. The misinformation can also leave a lasting impression on the audience who are of a vulnerable age.

Short Essay on Television in English (200 words)

Television is a great medium of entertainment for people from every age group. It provides enjoyment for the whole family. There are many channels, including news channels, sports channels, and channels of films, cartoons, or songs. Television also contains many programs and shows for kids. Television is a device that entertains the public and informs us about the country and the world.

Television is an amazing invention of science. Watching television makes us fresh, and we forget our worries and fatigue with its magic. Nowadays, the satellite technology and the cable network are far more powerful than ever. A variety of content is available on television and we can watch a channel of our choice. Television also has a great educational value as there are so many channels reserved for educational purposes. Many companies in the world prepare graded programmes.

However, television has a dark side too. Watching too much television can be harmful. Generally, kids are very fond of watching television, but continuously watching television can affect their eyes. Furthermore, it has an adverse effect on their studies. Students will not get enough time to study well if they stay busy watching television, and it makes them less imaginative. In spite of its dark side, television has become a vital means of transmitting both education and entertainment.

Before the birth of the internet, television was the most popular mass media globally. An essay on television has been a popular topic for writing articles. Children must know what a television is to write an essay on this device. This device was once a window into the world. It has slowly taken a back seat with the introduction of mobile phones. In this essay on television for classes 1, 2, & 3, we will discuss how to write about this device.

Here are important tips on how to write an essay on the television:

  • Gather facts on the television, such as its history, working mechanism, and advancements made.
  • Keep the essay informative and relatable to the general reader.
  • Add introductory and concluding lines to long-form essays.
  • Avoid stuffing the essay with technical information unless it is required.

One-line essays are easy for children as an introduction to writing. Below is an essay for classes 1 and 2 on television:

  • Television is one of the most popular sources of entertainment and information about the world.
  • The word television comes from the ancient Greek word “tele”, meaning far and the Latin word “visio”, which means sight.
  • TV was coined as a short form for television in 1948.
  • Television in the old days used CRT monitors. Modern televisions use LED or LCDs.
  • John Logie Baird invented the colour television in 1937.
  • Old televisions operated on simple antennas or cable networks.
  • Modern televisions are smart and very similar to mobile phones.
  • Televisions have been a source of endless entertainment for people for decades.
  • Television has both advantages and disadvantages.
  • As per the BARC report, 6.9% more Indian households owned a TV between 2018-2020.

Essays take practice to perfect. Here is an example of how to write a paragraph about the television:

Entertainment is a necessity in everyone’s life. Ever since the invention of the TV by John Logie Baird in 1926, people slowly realized its potential to act as mass media. The television revolutionized entertainment by creating a whole industry around it in the form of movies, game shows, series and documentaries. It is loved by adults and children alike as it has become a window to the world. People have been glued to their television sets, watching one show after another. It has become a centrepiece in everybody’s life. But, television watchers have declined since the introduction of computers, mobile phones and the internet. However, it continues to be relevant in the modern era.

A short essay is a great place to start learning essay writing. Here is an essay for classes 1, 2 and 3 on the television:

When it comes to inventions that have had the most impact on modern civilization, the television has earned a spot at the top of the list. While many people demonstrated a device that could display pictures, John Logie Baird came up with coloured television in 1937 that became popular. The device consisted of a cathode-ray tube and a screen that could project images and audio. For a long time, television was black and white in most people’s homes, and they had one or two channels that were a popular source of news and entertainment.

Once cable TV started worldwide, the entertainment industry moved to television production. Reality shows, movies and 24 hours news became a thing that began shaping the world and how people spent their time. Before the invention of the personal computer, the TV was also part of the gaming industry as a display unit. Most children had gaming consoles that displayed graphics on the TV.

Television has gone through major changes in the last few decades, and entertainment has mostly diversified into the internet, with the TV taking a back seat. However, it continues to be one of the most trusted and viewed mass media devices globally.

Short paragraph writing needs to be practised before children can take on the task of writing the long ones. Here is an example essay on television for class 3:

The television is one of the most popular and loved inventions in the world. This device is not only a source of news and entertainment but also a window to the world. Almost a century ago, television’s invention revolutionized the entertainment sector and how people viewed the world.

In 1926, John Logie Baird demonstrated the first television as we know it now and later developed the colour television. People from the older generations would recall that televisions looked nothing like what they do now. They were mostly made of a huge wooden box that contained a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) connected to a glass screen.

Colour televisions were harder to find, especially in developing countries, until the 1990s. Thanks to technology becoming cheaper, it was widely seen in most houses by the early 2000s. The flat-screen TV, which started becoming popular during the 2000s, had better picture quality, and some even had inbuilt games. By the decade’s end, the LCD and LED display screens replaced CRT television sets, and television became slimmer and more energy-efficient. Fast forward to the 2020s, televisions are smarter with internet connectivity and new features.

Throughout history, television viewers have mixed sentiments regarding its influence on people. Some thought of it as a wonderful source of information and connectivity, while many saw it as a distraction that wasted students’ time. Regardless of people’s opinions, the effect television has on the modern world cannot be overstated, and it continues to be a favourite window to the world for most people.

History Of Television

The history of television can be traced back to the 1800s. Before the invention of electronic television, mechanical televisions existed to scan an image and transmit it to a screen. John Logie Baird demonstrated his mechanical television in 1926, and it would take ten more years before the commercial production of televisions. Philo Farnsworth demonstrated the first successful electronic television in 1927. India first saw television as an experiment on 15th September 1959.

Television Influence on People Essay

Interpersonal relationships depend on a variety of internal and external factors, and television remains one of the most controversial issues in human life. On the one hand, according to Martin and Jacobus (2019), social interactions offered on TV are predictable and rather slick, with no solid room for experimentation and imagination. On the other hand, access to television programs has already become a meaningful international movement (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). It means that information may be displayed on TV and provoke certain emotions and behaviors. People want to and can watch as many shows and episodes as possible to cover their personal needs and emotional satisfaction. They compare experiences, analyze environments, and develop discussions to demonstrate what they learn from the offered material. For example, high social expectations and new perspectives on obligations depicted on TV affect adolescents and adults. In this essay, analyzing the course reading and an interview with a friend allows learning that despite a common context and technical advancement, television has a great impact on people.

Despite the intention to control the impact of TV on children, it is hard for parents to ensure that proper shows and episodes are chosen for watching. During this interview, my friend recognized two shows that determined her childhood and adolescence – Friends (NBC, 1994-2004) and Beverly Hills 90210 (CBS, 1990-2000). At that moment, watching the chosen series was related to multiple positive emotions because the authors depicted the nature of teenage and adult relationships and the quality of life that American citizens could have (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). For example, in Beverly Hills , school and college education were described, with a special evaluation of current problems of drug abuse, sexual violence, bullying, and friendship. In Friends , attention was paid to the essence of friendship and situations when certain decisions should be made and preferences should be established. It was learned that even the most intelligent and careful people could make mistakes and needed to analyze their behaviors in particular contexts. Each show seriously impacted the interviewee’s behavior and acceptance of reality. Those stories prepared adolescents for their grown-up lives where racial, gender, and age inequality existed and put various restrictions on an individual’s activities.

The ways of making TV shows have changed with time, including various technological and social aspects, but their impact on people stays the same. Today, there is no need to wait for a particular time but use the Internet and watch favorite shows anytime. The interviewee shared her interest in such series as Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 2005 – ) and Gossip Girl (CW, 2007-2012). Almost every episode brought some new experiences and emotions to her life because the characters lived their lives, solved problems, and achieved their goals. Martin and Jacobus (2019) notice that many modern episodes are self-contained, and it does not take much preparation or explanation in advance. Therefore, the number of viewers changes regularly, and some people demonstrate their interest or choose other shows. My friend admires Grey’s Anatomy due to its surgical themes and how health care has been recently improved. Gossip Girl is a show about modern teenagers, their problems, and their dreams. It reveals what young people want, what steps they are ready to take, and how family business affects children’s future. Instead of inspiration or motivation, these series provoke critical thinking and evaluation.

Addressing the chosen TV shows and learning the material from the textbook, it has become evident that television’s impact cannot be ignored. Despite the year of production and distribution, the main goal of any product is to entertain people and gain commercial benefits (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). However, modern researchers and sociologists admit that new programs are characterized by biased or sensationalist judgments that discourage social engagement and misinform people (Rothwell, 2019). Therefore, it is important to be cautious and accept the offered material for advertising purposes. Marked influence continues to grow and promote the American style of life in many countries abroad. Video art has become a serious competitor to commercial television, offering experimental and radical ideas to please the audience (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). This sphere of art has not been properly examined yet, but its abilities are unpredictable and captivating. Although some people are confident in the television industry, it is wrong to neglect the possibility of improvement but gain a better meaning. Compared to the adolescent period, when viewers admire opportunities and discover new sources of inspiration, adulthood makes them more attentive to the significant details.

Communication with my friend and the evaluation of old and new TV shows and video art ideas turn out to be a valuable experience in understanding how people should treat television. Different in quality and distribution periods, most series are similar in their context and purposes. They aim to describe human lives, address social, economic, and political problems, and show how certain decisions lead to certain outcomes. However, even if the episodes vary, their impact on people is definite – watching, learning, and following the examples. Images and sounds have been improved regardless of the viewer’s readiness or knowledge levels. Still, how individuals accept these stories has nothing to do with technology but personal judgments and attitudes toward society.

Long Essay on Television (500 Words)

Today, every home has at least one TV. It is one of science’s most unique, best, and smartest discoveries. People think of TV as a more advanced form of technology than radio. TV has become the most popular way to have fun. Television is like a screen on which we see information in the form of pictures. The picture we see is obtained through broadcasting signals. It can be controlled from a few distances using a remote.

History of Television

Many people worked on the idea of television in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On January 26, 1926, John Logie Baird of Britain showed the world the first live working TV system. Philo Taylor Farnsworth, who was 21 years old at the time, made the first electronic television in 1927. The name for it was the “idiot box.” When it was first made, the only reason for it was to provide entertainment. The TV was made to show moving black-and-white or monochrome pictures at first. As technology improved and innovation kept going, color was added to the pictures. On 15 September 1959 in Delhi (India), television was shown for the first time. This was about 20 years after the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) showed the world’s first television show in 1936.

There can be numerous advantages to watching television. You can watch TV with your friends or family in your free time. Earlier, TVs were only seen as a way to have fun, but as time went on, more and more channels appeared. It can now bring you news from all over the world giving viewers sports, movies, dramas, comedies, information, knowledge, and skills. Infotainment channels teach us things as well as entertain us. TV addiction can cause many health problems like back and neck pain, poor eyesight, being overweight, etc. However, some of the content that is shown on TV encourages the teasing of women, social evils, criminal behavior, violence, and hatred. Also, they show some advertisements that are not at all appropriate for kids. It makes a person’s personality and way of life worse. People often waste their time watching TV.

Science is proven beneficial in many cases but it can be proved hazardous if not used proper manner. The same case goes with television also. At home, the TV is our best friend. We can’t imagine life without TV. But overuse can ruin the future of youths. Parents should limit how much time their kids spend watching TV. advertisement on television essay in english

ADVERTISEMENTS:

There is considerable controversy over television advertising. According to some, it is the best selling medium ever invented. It is a means of bringing actual demonstration into the homes of the prospect and is therefore a more effective medium even when compared with the radio. Of course it would be a very expensive advertising medium and would certainly exclude the small advertiser.

Television advertising

In India the first experimental T.V. station was launched on September 15, 1959 in Delhi. The Bombay T.V. Centre started functioning on October 2, 1972. A relay transmitter at Pune was commissioned on October 2, 1973 to extend the range of the Bombay T.V. programmes.

The T.V. Centre at Srinagar started experimental telecasts on January 26, 1973. The fourth T.V. Centre in India, the Amritsar Transmitting Station was commissioned on September 29, 1973.

Towards the end of 1975, television centres were commissioned at Calcutta, Madras and Lucknow on 9th August, 15th August and 27th November respectively. Mussourie and Kanpur were added on as relay centres. It was only from 1st January 1970 that the decision to introduce commercial services was taken.

Progress during the 1970s remained very slow till a massive expansion programme was undertaken by the Government of India in the Sixth Five Year Plan. Now there are 18 programme originating Kendras of which 13 accept advertisements.

Television started accepting commercials with effect from January 1, 1976 over Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Lucknow, Jalandhar, Srinagar, Bangalore, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Nagpur and Guwahati.

With effect from 15th August 1982, commercial services have been made available to the advertisers on the National hook-up. Doordarshan telecasts simultaneously a common programme over all its 218 transmitters from 8.45 p.m. to 11.15 p.m. and on other important occasions when it is called ‘Network’.

At present TV services are available to more than 70% of the population. As a matter of Government policy, transmission of commercial advertising is restricted to 10% of the total time.

The Government has decided to use the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band for expansion of its television services and to have all the proposed new TV transmitters on that band. About 45 UHF TV transmitters are proposed to be installed during the Seventh Plan. The first 12 of these will be commissioned between January and March next.

Existing black and white television receivers will not be able to receive UHF telecasts. Television manufacturers have been asked to produce low cost TV sets incorporating UHF tuners on a priority basis.

Thus commercial advertising on TV has been permitted since 1976. In order to attract more advertisers to promote their products through this audio-visual medium, several important changes have recently been introduced.

In addition to the present projecting of stills, the seven TV centres now permit movies or animated shots. Although the present spots continue, there are three classifications of TV timings.

The rates for Prime Time are the highest as it includes film spot advertisements during important programmes such as sports events, feature films, etc. This new scheme has received a stunning response in Bombay and Delhi, whilst in other centres like Calcutta and Madras the advertisers’ response is disappointing.

Colour Television was introduced in India from the end of 1982. Time can be purchased by private organisations on the Doordarshan network from December 1982 by sponsoring programmes to be telecast in colour.

These programmes may be produced by Doordarshan or outside producers and different rates are charged.

Advertising revenue of Doordarshan has shown a galloping rise during 1986-87 over the previous years. According to reply to a recent question in Lok Sabha, the total revenue received by Doordarshan from certain advertisers rose as follows: Colgate Palmolive from Rs.91 lakhs in 1984-85 to Rs.3.44 crores in 1986-87; Hindustan Lever from Rs.1.03 crores to Rs.4.68 crores; Brooke Bond from Rs.44 lakhs to Rs.1.41 crores; Godrej from Rs.18 lakhs to Rs.1.10 crores; Hindustan Cocoa from Rs.63 lakhs-to Rs.1.25 crores during the above period; and from Bajaj it went up from Rs.27 lakhs in 1985- 86 to Rs.1.47 crores in 1986-87.

Television Essay

Essay on Is Television Better Than Books (350 Words) – Essay 3

Television is an audio visual machine which provides entertainment in the form of various programs, transmitted through air, in the form of radio signals, to be received by your Television. Books on the other hand have no electronics involved and have printed pages, to be read by their prospective Reader and are also aimed at conveying some useful information or entertaining him.

Is Television Better Than Books?

Both, books and television are two different modes of information exchange, aimed at providing useful or sometimes bogus information to the user and entertaining him. But the environment in which they are used and the effect that they have on their respective users are totally different. Television in a normal household is generally placed at common place-a place where the family, friends or visiting relatives gather.

People meet in front of Television, to watch their favorite shows, or to just listen lazily to the News. Whatever the reason may be, TV is only a short term entertainment option which does not provide you much useful information except when you are listening to News.

Books unlike Television are to be read in silence , stressing upon every word, every sentence  and letting it slowly seep into your memory through your eyes, while you lie relaxed on your favorite chair or lying down on your bed. Reading Books is like a spiritual exercise, which satisfies your desire to be entertained in a silent but effective way. Watching Television on the other hand, after sometime will leave you stressed, looking for peace and silence. TV slowly drains your inner peace and tranquility, leaving you stressed and flabbergasted. Whatever the TV does to you, Books do just the opposite.

Reading a favorite Book in silence sitting on your favorite chair will relax your soul and mind, and the more you read, the more you will feel content and informed.

If a question- Is Television better than books? Is thrown at me, my answer would be “No” always for very obvious reasons as explained above. I will always choose to silently read my favorite book in my favorite environment, rather than watching Television amid noise and commotion.

Essay on Television a Boon or Bane (400 Words) – Essay 4

Today, the television is found in billions of houses the world over. As per global statistics, nearly 79% of total households own at least one TV set. With such immense popularity and acceptability television has also hugely influenced individuals and even societies. In this essay we will discuss on the boon and bane factors of the television, ending with conclusion.

Television as a Boon

Television, when properly used is a vast sea of knowledge and information as well as the best source of entertainment. There are a number of ways to justify the usefulness of television in our lives. First of all, it is the most primary and most popular source of entertainment. It provides a number of entertainment programs, ranging from daily soaps, singing and dancing competitions, news channels, movie channels, science and fiction channels, business channels, automobile channels and lot more. Moreover, you can view these channels in the language of your choice.

Apart from being entertaining, television is also a tool to gain education and information. There are various channels based on subject matters for school and college going students as well as for the students of PhD level.

There are also a number of NEWS channels running live news from various corners of the world, covering every significant political, social and educational event. A Television set provides all of this useful information in the comfort of our homes, thus proving that television is a boon to humanity.

Television as a Bane

Despite of all the advantages that make television a boon to human race, there also are certain traits of television which could make it really annoying. Speak of the television as annoying and the first thing that flashes through our minds is noise. The sound of a highly emotional soap opera coming from the next room when you are trying to study or sleep could be quite frustrating and annoying.

Moreover, a television also transmits adult and violent programs which could be really misleading for youngsters. Exposure to such malicious contents impacts the personality and social skills of the youngsters, often making them arrogant, hostile, corrupt, violent and socially obscure. Also, addiction to television is an added disadvantage which along with the mentioned effects makes television a bane to humanity.

With regards to the above explanation, it is established that television is both a boon and bane to the humanity. How we use the television makes all the difference between it being a bane or boon. When used purely for information and knowledge purpose it’s a boon, while, when used for entertainment purpose beyond a limit, it could turn into a bane.

Essay on Television Is Harmful To the Society (450 Words) – Essay 5

Television is an audio visual device which entertains you through various visual programs transmitted through air. The information that it provides is not always useful, however that depends on the user to a larger extent. Television since its inception has a vast affect on Civilization, ranging from health to sociological and sometimes psychological. Though it is a source of information, the incessant use of Televisions has led to many medical conditions and a drastic change in the social fabric.

Television is Harmful to the Society

Today the younger generation is more susceptible to myopic vision (a medical condition in which person looses his/her normal eyesight) as a result of watching Television for longer duration than advised. Watching TV closely or for longer duration also results in tired eyes, headache and lost concentration.

In past few years there has been a reported increase in the number of children suffering from visual disorders, lost concentration and headache as a consequence of watching TV. Apart from injuring their eye sight, TV slowly makes them inactive turning them into introverts. Instead of going out and playing, mingling with other children, making new friends, they sit motionless and watch TV for hours. The effect that the TV has on their overall persona is not very hard to imagine. Television basically transforms fun loving, outgoing, little enthusiastic wanderers into dumb, visually impaired and introvert kids.

The TV ahs also affected the society in the same manner as it has affected the kids. Today if you visit any locality your town, city or village in evening, you will find closed doors with different sounds of Television coming from the houses. Instead of socializing in their free time, people have taken to watching their favorite program on TV, which provides no informational value at all.

In the past years, when there was no TV, people spend their time socializing, asking about each other’s health and well being, reading their favorite books or newspapers, playing sports and helping one another in the time of need. Now with the invention of TV, all the doors of socialization got closed and people are silently watching TV behind their closed doors, while there neighbor might be looking for help.

The social and psychological implication of TV is more severe than the effects that it has on health. We need to take strict initiative and change the custom of watching TV, if we desire for better health of our Children and want to give them a healthy and content life. Stipulate a short time for TV watching in your house and don’t let your child watch TV. Encourage him to go out and play, tell him to make new friends, bring new books for him to read and be a responsible parent.

Essay on Is Television Corrupting the Mind of Youth (500 Words) – Essay 6

Television is the most widely used and most popular audio visual device used for entertainment and informative purposes. Wide acceptability has made television a household name and its popularity cuts across ages and classes. Youths, however are more vulnerable to the negative effects of television, due to immaturity and tender age. In the following essay we will discuss on how television is corrupting the minds of youth and what remedial measures could be taken to eliminate it.

How is Television Corrupting the Minds of Youth?

First of all, watching television could be a waste of time if not watched for informative or knowledge purpose. Many television programs show inappropriate adult contents, teen violence, drug abuse, sexual and other similar offences, undesirable language, bullying etc. Also, most of the movies shown today contain high degree of violence and bloodshed. Such programs hugely affect the psychological and social behaviour of the youth.

An uncontrolled exposure of violent and corrupt programs make the youth arrogant, violent and more prone to corrupt practices. For example, watching crime based serial or movies make the immature minds of youths to follow the same corrupt practices. Also, teens tend to copy undesirable activities like eve teasing and staking, as is shown in many programs and movies.

Moreover, smoking and liquor consumption are some of the most common activities shown in television programs. Such activities have high influence on the teens, who relate them with manhood. Somehow, they tend to believe that they could only be a complete man if they smoke as well as consume liquor as the actors on the television do it.

Necessary Measures to Keep the Youth Safe from Ill Effects of Television

The most effective method to keep the youths safe from the influence of television is to provide limited access to them. Also, there should be a restriction on the channels they view and they must only be allowed to view informative and knowledgeable programs. Viewing malicious and violent content by youngsters must be strictly prohibited.

Parents and guardians should be more communicative with their wards, discussing on the derogatory effects of television among other issues. Children should be told on how to use television for gaining information and education.

Youths should be well informed about the advantages as well as the disadvantages of television and also that watching inappropriate content on television will adversely affect their behaviour and social life as well as distort their thought and morale.

These days a number of youths are taking up bullying, smoking, consuming liquor other corrupt practices under the influence of television.

There are hundreds of programs on TV which have a negative effect on the youth’s mind. The responsibility of keeping the youths aloof from the ill effects of TV depends on us, the elders. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every guardian to keep an eye upon what his/her ward is watching on the television and what kind of channels they have access to. It is only through proper guidance and interaction that we would be able to keep our youth safe from the harmful effects of television.

“Never write an advertisement which you wouldn’t want your family to read.” ~David Ogilvy

Advertising is the art of communicating impersonal messages to a large chunk of people at the same time. It is done by companies to market their products. The way the message is presented to the audience is known as an advertisement or an ad. An ad aims to increase the awareness of the product in the people’s minds and urge them to purchase it. The first advertisements ever used can be traced back to the Egyptians. They used papyrus to write slogans and offers related to fruits, vegetables and clothes. Thomas J. Barratt is popularly known as the father of modern advertising and is most famous for his campaigns of Pears Soap.

Various Ways of Advertising

The most common and known advertising technique is through the medium of television. Advertisements are played in the ad breaks between shows and movies. A lot of various products are advertised on television, including motor oil, mobile phones, food products, milk powders, etc.

Although this is a digital era and everything is being done paperless, still many people love the feel of a magazine or a newspaper in their hands. Advertising through print media is an excellent option as it reaches people who are slightly elder and have more disposable income. Example, cosmetic product companies like Olay advertise their anti- ageing creams in women’s magazines.

Radio advertising is also one of the oldest modes of advertising. It was first started in the United States. The advertisement for a product is played in designated breaks between songs or radio shows. For example, a lot of real estate companies make use of this form of advertising.

A company can also make use of direct marketing strategies for advertising. In this, emails are sent directly to prospective buyers through the internet. Some companies even post letters, along with brochures and coupons to attract buyers. Cell phone text messaging and calling has also become quite common. Many restaurants make use of this technique.

In a recent survey, it was found that almost 1 in every 4 people had a social media account. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter cannot be ignored while advertising. Social media has a great reach. It has the capacity of reaching millions of people with just a simple photo, tweet or post. Many small businesses take the help of social media to advertise their products as it is very economical to do so.

Companies can also resort to sponsorship’s. Many companies sponsor players, sporting events, charitable events and business conferences. This is a good way of associating the brand with a cause at minimal investment. Examples include Pepsi sponsoring IPL and Adidas sponsoring Messi.

Advantages of Advertisement

Advertising helps create and generate demand for new products. It allows manufactures to reach economies of scale as the greater number of units to be made, the lesser each unit costs. Through advertising, companies can build a product image, reputation and goodwill, which can benefit it in the long run.

Most of all, advertising helps the company to get the message across to their intended audience. The audience gets information about the product, which helps them make an informed choice. Advertising also helps contribute productively to the economy. It generates employment in the form of photographers, actors, editors, etc.

Disadvantages of Advertisement

Advertising can have a negative impact, especially on children and teenagers. Many companies, like Thumbs Up show famous actors performing dangerous stunts. When exposed to such advertisements, children think of trying those stunts themselves. This can prove to be fatal and life-threatening.

Small children start cribbing when they see an attractive toy on the television and pester their parents to purchase it for them. Advertisements like those of fairness creams create self- doubt and lead to lower self-esteem in young girls. The advertisements show that as soon as a girl becomes fair, she gets a job.

By: Haque , For college students

(d) How does television have a detrimental effect on students? (e) Can you name a few television programs that you think are harmful to young people? (f) What effect does this device have on health?

What is television: Television is an electronic device that is used to transmit audio-visual messages. It is a channel of Mass communication. Through the help of an electro-magnetic wave, messages are disseminated to the mass audience simultaneously. That is, the messages or information disseminated are passed down to millions of heterogeneous (vast) audiences at the same time.

Television message has a great advantage over other media of communication like Radio and newspapers or books. Newspapers and books appeal to the sense of sight only while Television messages appeal to the sense of sight and hearing. Television belongs to the category of broadcasting media.

Television has helped mankind in various ways like reaching a vast audience both in rural and urban at the same time. It is a teaching aid. The use of motion pictures and audio helps the views to understand its message better. This is because what is said is shown and demonstrated. However, Television is doing more harm than good to our youths in the following ways:

Usages: Television is used to disseminate informative, educative, and entertainment messages. But our youths have turned the television to become an entertainment medium only. Entertainment movies and games have taken over the spaces for other educative programs. They do not show interest in the news or commentaries. They go away or avoid the station at that time and tune in to other stations that are airing movies. In many homes, Televisions are being used for game purposes. Day and night, the youths are glued to the television playing violent or entertainment video games.

The Place of Study: It is no longer a new trend in the manner in which our youths prefer watching Television to the detriment of their studies. They wile away their time meant for reading and doing assignments on the Television screen. Many youths used to watch the Television into the late hour of the night and end up going to school late.

Lack of Concentration: Television has ways of distracting the youths. The madness for Zee-world, Telemundo, Soap opera, and African magic has gone beyond control. Sports channels have not done better either. It has done more harm than good. It has led our youths into betting games. Some are ready to miss school days for a champion’s league. No wonder many parents place embargos on the Television during the weekdays and allow it for their children to watch only on Saturdays and Sundays with restrictions to some channels.

Immorality on Increase: The Big Brother Naija and The Big Brother Africa television program is doing more harm to the youths. The program allows the participants to dress indecently, discuss and practice sexual intercourse openly, and was launched a few years ago. It has quenched many virtues in the lives of the youths and awakens the desire for sex and quick riches.

Health Implication: The eyes clinics are recording a great number of youths with serious eye disease. Constant fixing of the eyes on the Television screen causes damages to the retina. If the youth have blur vision at a youthful age, what will the future hold?

Conclusion: Television has its own advantages like I earlier mentioned but the disadvantages have outweighed its advantages. Looking at the listed points, we can boldly say that television is doing more harm than good to our youths.

The Problem With Saying ‘Sex Assigned at Birth’

A black and white photo of newborns in bassinets in the hospital.

By Alex Byrne and Carole K. Hooven

Mr. Byrne is a philosopher and the author of “Trouble With Gender: Sex Facts, Gender Fictions.” Ms. Hooven is an evolutionary biologist and the author of “T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone That Dominates and Divides Us.”

As you may have noticed, “sex” is out, and “sex assigned at birth” is in. Instead of asking for a person’s sex, some medical and camp forms these days ask for “sex assigned at birth” or “assigned sex” (often in addition to gender identity). The American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association endorse this terminology; its use has also exploded in academic articles. The Cleveland Clinic’s online glossary of diseases and conditions tells us that the “inability to achieve or maintain an erection” is a symptom of sexual dysfunction, not in “males,” but in “people assigned male at birth.”

This trend began around a decade ago, part of an increasing emphasis in society on emotional comfort and insulation from offense — what some have called “ safetyism .” “Sex” is now often seen as a biased or insensitive word because it may fail to reflect how people identify themselves. One reason for the adoption of “assigned sex,” therefore, is that it supplies respectful euphemisms, softening what to some nonbinary and transgender people, among others, can feel like a harsh biological reality. Saying that someone was “assigned female at birth” is taken to be an indirect and more polite way of communicating that the person is biologically female. The terminology can also function to signal solidarity with trans and nonbinary people, as well as convey the radical idea that our traditional understanding of sex is outdated.

The shift to “sex assigned at birth” may be well intentioned, but it is not progress. We are not against politeness or expressions of solidarity, but “sex assigned at birth” can confuse people and creates doubt about a biological fact when there shouldn’t be any. Nor is the phrase called for because our traditional understanding of sex needs correcting — it doesn’t.

This matters because sex matters. Sex is a fundamental biological feature with significant consequences for our species, so there are costs to encouraging misconceptions about it.

Sex matters for health, safety and social policy and interacts in complicated ways with culture. Women are nearly twice as likely as men to experience harmful side effects from drugs, a problem that may be ameliorated by reducing drug doses for females. Males, meanwhile, are more likely to die from Covid-19 and cancer, and commit the vast majority of homicides and sexual assaults . We aren’t suggesting that “assigned sex” will increase the death toll. However, terminology about important matters should be as clear as possible.

More generally, the interaction between sex and human culture is crucial to understanding psychological and physical differences between boys and girls, men and women. We cannot have such understanding unless we know what sex is, which means having the linguistic tools necessary to discuss it. The Associated Press cautions journalists that describing women as “female” may be objectionable because “it can be seen as emphasizing biology,” but sometimes biology is highly relevant. The heated debate about transgender women participating in female sports is an example ; whatever view one takes on the matter, biologically driven athletic differences between the sexes are real.

When influential organizations and individuals promote “sex assigned at birth,” they are encouraging a culture in which citizens can be shamed for using words like “sex,” “male” and “female” that are familiar to everyone in society, as well as necessary to discuss the implications of sex. This is not the usual kind of censoriousness, which discourages the public endorsement of certain opinions. It is more subtle, repressing the very vocabulary needed to discuss the opinions in the first place.

A proponent of the new language may object, arguing that sex is not being avoided, but merely addressed and described with greater empathy. The introduction of euphemisms to ease uncomfortable associations with old words happens all the time — for instance “plus sized” as a replacement for “overweight.” Admittedly, the effects may be short-lived , because euphemisms themselves often become offensive, and indeed “larger-bodied” is now often preferred to “plus sized.” But what’s the harm? No one gets confused, and the euphemisms allow us to express extra sensitivity. Some see “sex assigned at birth” in the same positive light: It’s a way of talking about sex that is gender-affirming and inclusive .

The problem is that “sex assigned at birth”— unlike “larger-bodied”— is very misleading. Saying that someone was “assigned female at birth” suggests that the person’s sex is at best a matter of educated guesswork. “Assigned” can connote arbitrariness — as in “assigned classroom seating” — and so “sex assigned at birth” can also suggest that there is no objective reality behind “male” and “female,” no biological categories to which the words refer.

Contrary to what we might assume, avoiding “sex” doesn’t serve the cause of inclusivity: not speaking plainly about males and females is patronizing. We sometimes sugarcoat the biological facts for children, but competent adults deserve straight talk. Nor are circumlocutions needed to secure personal protections and rights, including transgender rights. In the Supreme Court’s Bostock v. Clayton County decision in 2020, which outlawed workplace discrimination against gay and transgender people, Justice Neil Gorsuch used “sex,” not “sex assigned at birth.”

A more radical proponent of “assigned sex” will object that the very idea of sex as a biological fact is suspect. According to this view — associated with the French philosopher Michel Foucault and, more recently, the American philosopher Judith Butler — sex is somehow a cultural production, the result of labeling babies male or female. “Sex assigned at birth” should therefore be preferred over “sex,” not because it is more polite, but because it is more accurate.

This position tacitly assumes that humans are exempt from the natural order. If only! Alas, we are animals. Sexed organisms were present on Earth at least a billion years ago, and males and females would have been around even if humans had never evolved. Sex is not in any sense the result of linguistic ceremonies in the delivery room or other cultural practices. Lonesome George, the long-lived Galápagos giant tortoise , was male. He was not assigned male at birth — or rather, in George’s case, at hatching. A baby abandoned at birth may not have been assigned male or female by anyone, yet the baby still has a sex. Despite the confusion sown by some scholars, we can be confident that the sex binary is not a human invention.

Another downside of “assigned sex” is that it biases the conversation away from established biological facts and infuses it with a sociopolitical agenda, which only serves to intensify social and political divisions. We need shared language that can help us clearly state opinions and develop the best policies on medical, social and legal issues. That shared language is the starting point for mutual understanding and democratic deliberation, even if strong disagreement remains.

What can be done? The ascendance of “sex assigned at birth” is not an example of unhurried and organic linguistic change. As recently as 2012 The New York Times reported on the new fashion for gender-reveal parties, “during which expectant parents share the moment they discover their baby’s sex.” In the intervening decade, sex has gone from being “discovered” to “assigned” because so many authorities insisted on the new usage. In the face of organic change, resistance is usually futile. Fortunately, a trend that is imposed top-down is often easier to reverse.

Admittedly, no one individual, or even a small group, can turn the lumbering ship of English around. But if professional organizations change their style guides and glossaries, we can expect that their members will largely follow suit. And organizations in turn respond to lobbying from their members. Journalists, medical professionals, academics and others have the collective power to restore language that more faithfully reflects reality. We will have to wait for them to do that.

Meanwhile, we can each apply Strunk and White’s famous advice in “The Elements of Style” to “sex assigned at birth”: omit needless words.
