Look Inside the book

About the author.

In the fall of 2011, I arrived in the USA from a country that most Americans have never heard of, Latvia. I was supposed to start working on my PhD but I had no research topic and no idea what to do next. Then, luckily, on a visit to New York City, I met a businessman who had somehow read and liked my Master’s thesis and just like that – I had a topic, a mentor, and a sponsor. Just imagine the power of publishing – a stranger had read my work, didn’t care about my broken English or where I was from. He was ready to help because of it.

From that point on, no one has had to convince me of the value of producing research papers. Nevertheless, writing my first articles took forever. Literature was far from my favorite subject in high school and not much changed during my undergraduate studies. I thought that writing was just not compatible with me. Hell, back then, I hadn’t even seen a journal paper since my university didn’t have a subscription to any scientific databases. As far as I can recall, the first time I ever read a journal paper was some point into my Master’s studies.

When writing those first papers, I felt insecure revealing everything that I knew (and didn’t know) for anyone to read then, or at any time in the future. It was much easier to hide in the lab performing experiments. Plus, since I never taken a writing class, I had no idea of the structure research papers must follow or what this whole peer review thing was about?

But I soon realized that there is simply no way to become a scientist without good writing skills. So, I put a conscious effort into acquiring them. The emphasis here is on the word skills because, as you see from my experience, I had no inherent talent for writing. Instead, I learned from books that explained scientific writing, took writing classes, and interrogated journal editors and accomplished scientists who have published in Nature. Most importantly – I wrote. A lot.

Martins Zaumanis citation count Google Scholar

Fast forward to 2021, where I have developed a paper writing approach that I believe is superior to anything that I have seen. The approach not only helps to write; it also helps to come up with the content itself. In other words, I now use writing as a tool for thinking about research results.

Once dreaded, writing papers has now become one of my favorite tasks. Six years after graduating with a PhD, I am the author of 60+ peer-reviewed journal publications, including 34 as the first author. I feel butterflies in my stomach and a sense of pride every time someone cites one of my papers. Plus, as an added bonus, I often have the chance to engage in personal exchanges with people who have read them. Who knows what opportunities might continue to arise from such interactions this time…?

I work at one of the world’s best research institutions – Empa in Switzerland. One of the primary reasons I got here was my publishing record. This book holds the secrets to everything I have learned about writing papers. Unlike me, you will not have to spend years attending courses and asking silly questions to journal editors. Everything you need to know about writing research papers is summarized in this book.

About the author

My name is Martins Zaumanis and I studied at a second-rate university in a country that barely anyone has heard of. That did not stop me from earning a Ph.D. in the USA, and now I work as a scientist at a prestigious research institute in Switzerland. In this book, I will share the academic publishing approaches that made this journey possible

Writing was far from my favorite subject in high school so you can trust me when I say that you don't have to have talent to write a research paper. What you need is a trustworthy system and that is exactly what I offer in this book. It's called the "LEAP" academic writing approach and I designed it to first allow the author to understand the research results himself/herself and then explain them to others in a research paper.

When writing the second part of the book, I was thinking of time-traveling to an earlier version of myself. Back when I started my research career, knowing the principles on which academic publishing is built would have made my life much easier. Since time-travel is not (yet) a thing, I did the second-best thing and wrote down the advice so that your journey to professorship would be smoother than mine.

Martins Zaumanis

I am a researcher at ETH University domain in Switzerland. Working in academia is my dream come true but given my origins, the odds were stacked against me. You see, I grew up in a working-class family in a country that barely anyone has heard of, and I studied at a second-rate university that did not even provide access to research papers.

My background did not stop me from earning a Ph.D. in the USA and getting a position at one of the world's best research institutions. This journey was possible only because I developed strong academic communication skills that I will share with you in the Peer Recognized book series.

Where did I acquire the skills?

To learn telling about my research, I attended courses on public speaking, analyzed great presenters in action, and before my TEDx talk, I even had one-on-one lessons from a theater director. These are skills that no one teaches in graduate school. And even if they did, it most likely the advice would be bad because academics are, for the most part, awful presenters (just recall the number of presentations that start with an "outline").

To master writing impactful research papers, I discussed scientific writing with editors of major academic journals, took advice from people who have published in Nature, and read many books about human psychology. To learn writing winning research proposals, I attended a business incubator and even presented my research to angel investors.

After years of refining my skills, I can see the work has paid off. Even though literature was far from my favorite subject in school, writing research papers has become one of my favorite tasks. I feel butterflies in my stomach every time I see a new citation of my papers. Knowing that my work is making an impact pushes me to come up with new research ideas, and five years after Ph.D. graduation, I have authored projects amounting to a total of 6.7 million USD. Finally, knowing how to present my work in conferences and on the internet allows me to connect with many scientists and join exciting collaborative research projects.

Every day I enjoy being able to do a job I am passionate about. Getting here was only possible because of the academic communication skills that I developed. In the five Peer Recognized series books, I will show you how to acquire these skills without annoying theater directors and journal editors.

The Impactful Academic

Building a research career that makes a difference, table of contents, impact primer: the what, why and how of impact.

Impact has generated much discussion in higher education in recent years, and it is not abating. This chapter lays the groundwork to build an understanding of what impact is, where it has come from and where it is likely to be going in higher education. The various roles of universities and academics and the value of knowledge generation and dissemination to communities outside of academia are explored. Understanding impact and how it is enacted, monitored, evaluated and reported is essential to position impact within one's academic practice. While various definitions of impact have been adopted in different contexts, the focus is on leveraging those definitions as an academic. The language of impact is important as it determines how some disciplines are privileged and others potentially are disadvantaged. The chapter encourages academics in the latter category of disciplines to be active in helping shape the conversation around impact in their contexts. The final section discusses where impact may be going within higher education, how to get the most out of the book as a researcher and what each chapter contributes to becoming an impactful researcher. There is no one right way to be an academic; the reader is encouraged to use each chapter to help hone and refine their academic trajectory given their own epistemological beliefs.

Identifying and Leveraging Collegial and Institutional Supports for Impact

This chapter discusses practical ways that we as researchers can identify and make use of supports that will help further our research impact and advocates for making plans to include impact work from the beginning and taking advantage of opportunities and resources available. The chapter begins by encouraging you to identify your own values related to research impact and to articulate what impact you would like their research to have in the world. This ensures that impact work does not become a tick-box exercise but a meaningful, planned part of their research practice. The chapter then looks at supports – collegial and institutional – from the perspective of information science. The discussion of collegial supports makes the case that colleagues are key sources of practical information, assistance and mentorship; these connections can become information relationships and important parts of your professional network. The discussion of institutional supports makes the case that the landscape of impact can be scattered, so it is important to actively seek out information to help understand the impact environment where you are. Each discussion is accompanied with practical suggestions about how to make the most of opportunities and get the supports needed. The chapter ends with a section aimed at those who are in leadership positions to discuss what can be done to help reduce barriers and provide supports for those who are undertaking research impact projects, including helping to share information and resources about research impact, as well as acting as a mentor.

Strategic Digital Engagement for Impact: Building Your Academic Presence Online

In today's digital environments, online engagement is a critical component of achieving successful, sustainable impact. Building an online presence that extends beyond the walls of academia is therefore an essential part of developing as a scholar during any stage of the career span. In this chapter, we discuss career-wide approaches for establishing yourself as a “networked scholar” ( Goodier & Czerniewicz, 2015 ) to build connections and foster communication. We also explore ways to engage your audience through open, public outputs (publications, graphics, websites, profile tools, etc.). Using the key strategies presented, scholars can build an online academic presence and increase their scholarly visibility on the web or through social media. At the core of this chapter is an exploration of how academics can develop and communicate about themselves and their research interests, to achieve their goals both in the near-term and across their career span. While the approaches presented are not prescriptive, they are intended to encourage the reader to generate a plan for online engagement that helps establish their scholarly identity. These tried and tested activities can be leveraged for engaging different audiences in research in ways that promote networked scholarship and create pathways to impact.

Writing Impact for Grants: Pack Your Bags. We Are Going on an Impact Journey!

In this chapter, we share our top tips on writing impact for funding bids and reports. These are drawn from our extensive experience working across a UK university as research impact managers and also successfully developing and writing small to multimillion-pound grant applications for UK charity, UK Government and European funding. We have developed and delivered impact training to researchers at all career stages, written impact case studies for the UK's research assessment and published on the genre. 1 We also lead the Impact Special Interest Group for the UK's Association of Research Managers and Administrators (ARMA) and contribute to conferences and specialist training internationally, which has included the Australasia region, Africa and Europe.

Towards Impact: Best Practice in Community and Stakeholder Engagement

As academics, quantitative and/or qualitative methods are at the heart of the research we conduct and the insights we seek to share with the world. However, this does not always translate into impactful engagement for the stakeholders and communities we engage with, despite the evidence that indicates the potential to do so. One of the critical ways that academics can generate impact is through community and stakeholder engagement – developing networks and external partnerships that work collaboratively to generate change. Research indicates that more participatory methods of engagement where stakeholders can co-create solutions have the greatest transformational potential for impact. The key to differentiating meaningful and impactful stakeholder engagement from distinct concepts such as communication or consultation is understanding the level of influence the stakeholder will have on the decision. This chapter provides a practical guide for academics to build their practice in impactful engagement throughout their career through eight simple steps. Using the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) spectrum of public participation, an example of how engagement methods can be selected to build impactful engagement skills throughout the academic career is illustrated. Impactful engagement has the capacity to bring diverse voices and perspectives together to shape decisions and change, and in so doing, create greater impact.

Knowledge Mobilization: Creating a Path to Impact

Knowledge mobilization (KMb) offers an approach to conducting impactful research. In this chapter, we describe ways to remove barriers to understanding and implementing a KMb approach. We do this by examining the broad scope of KMb, thinking about how it has evolved over time, and focusing on core intent rather than terminology debates. Our goal is to offer a pragmatic series of stepping stones that form a KMb pathway. These steps include: (1) asking good questions; (2) aligning your work with what has already been done; (3) acquiring new and diverse knowledge; (4) adapting knowledge to a specific context; (5) applying knowledge in the real world; and (6) assessing what works and what doesn't throughout your journey. We argue that this process will identify and support successful implementation of nuanced, novel, and meaningful solutions to real-world problems. Following the KMb pathway will guide you toward becoming an impactful academic who creates a lasting research legacy and a positive mark on the world.

Demonstrating Impact – Considerations for Collecting and Communicating the Evidence of Impact

This chapter addresses one of the most challenging aspects of impact, ‘how do I demonstrate that I've had an impact?’ When the topic of impact comes up, researchers want to know how they'll measure it. As not all evidence is a measurement, this chapter describes how researchers can be strategic and intentional about collecting and reporting impact evidence. As discussed in Chapter 1, a narrative approach to reporting on impact is generally used and making a case compelling is achieved with compelling evidence. Drawing on learnings from previous chapters around working with stakeholders and university systems and supports, the chapter challenges the reader to consider how they might build a compelling impact case study and provides a tool to support collecting and communicating the evidence of impact of your research. Case studies are generally utilised to demonstrate different types of evidence from various disciplines, and a template is provided for researchers to begin mapping out their impact evidence plan. Consistent with the approach of the book, it is emphasised that collecting the evidence of impact is not done in isolation or for one project and then forgotten. Rather, it is a whole career approach that is aligned with an individual philosophy of academic responsibility and identity. Being able to use excellent evidence to articulate the impact your research has generated will position the researcher to better attract additional funding to generate bigger impact in the future.

The Long View: Building an Impact Plan on Your Terms

The penultimate chapter pulls together pieces of the previous eight chapters to support you in building a career-level impact plan. While the other chapters are a mix of foundational knowledge and practical approaches, this chapter is more philosophical in nature and intended to motivate the reader to bring their impact journey to life. You are encouraged to reflect on your own journey and consider what steps you might take to achieve a career that is consistent with your values and own belief in the importance of the work you do. Contributions from impactful researchers from the University of Auckland help to illustrate how diverse career pathways can be, emphasising there is no one-size-fits-all approach and that career-level impact plans need to consider personal motives and values, intersectionality, as well as disciplinary, institutional, national and international contexts. Plans need to focus on identifying opportunities to hone impact skills, finding people who can be part of your broader impact support team and working out how to strategically balance the teaching, research and service expectations placed on you as an academic. Throughout this chapter, questions prompt you to start building your own understanding of impact in the context of your career or to strategically reflect on your impact journey up to now.

Towards the Impactful Academic: The Impactful Researcher's Settings for Success

This final chapter reviews the key themes of the previous chapters to paint a picture of what it is to be an impactful academic. The reader is prompted to build strategies into their workflow and lives to ensure that impact remains a priority considering the many competing requirements in their roles. The chapter provides strategies for keeping impact on track by engaging both internal and external networks. As government priorities change, higher education will continue to morph and evolve. The impactful academic builds skills throughout their career span, and these skills increase resiliency in the face of a rapidly changing higher education sector; skills that are increasingly critical to career success. The chapter takes stock of skill development related to academic identity and impact goals and encourages readers to continue their impact journey through reflective practice.

Frameworks for developing impactful systematic literature reviews and theory building: What, Why and How

Profile image of Justin Paul

With the increased momentum of knowledge generation in the field of research, systematic reviews are essential to epitomise the state of extant literature and for theory building. In this article, we discuss the advantages of synthesising and reporting findings using a more impactful type of systematic review, the framework-based review. Additionally, we list and summarise some of the popularly used frameworks, TCCM (theories-contexts-characteristics-methods;

The foundation of organizations and knowledge-based economies is widely considered to be human capital and knowledge workers. This review synthesizes prior research on skilled migration, brain gain, and brain drain, occurring because of the cross-border migration of skilled professionals. The review comprises 75 studies, synthesizes findings, and develops a conceptual framework for enablers of skilled migration across the border, resulting in brain drain and brain gain. We support previous theories on international migration, stating wage differentials, employment, better earning, and family life as reasons for migration, as well as we provide the basis of Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory and Herzberg's two-factor theory to explain the phenomenon of skilled migration. The conceptual model proposed elucidates the brain drain and brain gain outcomes, thereby surfacing a formative base for future research agenda.

The present study is a systematic literature review that identifies the context of consumer behaviour and analytics in business to forecast the future of consumer behaviour with changing business trends through TCCM (theory, context, characteristics, method) guidelines. The authors identified that prior research used theories in different disciplines to explain the phenomenon in customer behaviour and analytics literature. When considering the theory, these phenomena often can be segregated based on the industry (e.g., marketing, advertising, sales, healthcare, human resource management, tourism), focusing on status-based mechanisms (e.g., cross-gaming predictive models), inertia-based mechanisms (e.g., theory of rational expectations and adaptive learning), or relationship-based mechanisms (e.g., theory of consumer engagement behaviour).

The sharing economy is established as a new economy in the digital era. Many reviews on the sharing economy avail, but none, to date, has shed enough light to illuminate understanding pertaining to the similar and dissimilar characteristics of consumers and producers in the sharing economy. To address this gap, this paper aims to provide a one-stop, state-of-the-art overview of existing research on the sharing economy through the lens of consumers and producers. To do so, this paper conducts a systematic review of 148 articles on the sharing economy identified through the snowballing technique and organized using the antecedents, decisions, and outcomes (ADO) and theories, contexts, and methods (TCM) frameworks. In doing so, this paper unpacks the trust, personal, economic, social, entrepreneurial, environmental, legal, and technological factors that impact on behavioural performance, loyalty, and impact factors among consumers and producers in the sharing economy. Policy Considerations to Prevent Drug Shortages and Mitigate Supply Chain Vulnerabilities in the United States

Key Highlights

Drug shortages impact patients, families, caregivers, pharmacists, hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, and other individuals and entities across the health care system.

Drug shortages are a decades-old problem arising, in part, from market forces that touch stakeholders across the drug supply chain—providers and pharmacies, manufacturers, and the middlemen in the system. Key issues include a broad lack of transparency, concentration among middlemen, and prices for generic drugs that are driven to levels so low that they create insufficient incentives for redundancy or resilience-oriented manufacturing, distribution, and purchasing. These market failures lead to pharmaceutical supply chains that are brittle, disruption-prone, and too slow to recover from shortages.

Supply chain resilience involves fostering processes that are less likely to face disruptions, as well as establishing the ability to withstand and mitigate disruptions so their impact—when they occur—is limited. This resilience also comes from diversification of supply—both in redundancy of manufacturing capacity and a balance of domestic and diversified foreign sourcing—and the presence of reliable, efficient, and sustainable, robust manufacturing practices.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS or Department) has made significant strides in shoring up the system’s ability to respond to shortages. Nevertheless, more impactful and enduring solutions require additional statutory authorities and funding to resolve underlying causes of shortages. All supply chain participants play a part in these solutions.

This paper describes policy concepts for consideration, including collaboration with the private sector to develop and implement a Manufacturer Resiliency Assessment Program (MRAP) and a Hospital Resilient Supply Program (HRSP). As described, the combination of these programs would bring transparency into the market, link purchasing and payment decisions to supply chain resilience practices, and incentivize investments in supply chain resilience and diversification in the supply chain—including domestic manufacturing—at a scale that would drive impactful change in the market. This paper focuses on generic sterile injectable medicines used in inpatient settings, given their importance to acute inpatient care, and their relative risk of supply disruptions—though HHS recognizes that these challenges affect other products, and therefore, the solutions described here may be applicable in other markets.
