Describe a Sportsperson you Admire

Describe a Sportsperson you Admire

In today’s lesson, we are going to look at a question from IELTS speaking part 2 that asks you to describe a sportsperson . I will help you analyze the question, make notes, give some useful language, and then I will give you a helpful sample answer.

Note: I have updated this post since it was originally written to include a video lesson. You can find that at the bottom of this page.

Cue Card: Describe a Sportsperson

Here’s a common question from IELTS Speaking Part 2:

Describe a sportsperson you admire. You should say: who the person is what sport he or she does when did you first hear about this person and why you admire him or her.

Hopefully, everyone reading this is at least familiar with some famous sports stars. You don’t need to be a fanatic to answer this question well… but it might help! You just need to be able to think of a person, describe what he or she does, when and where you first encountered this person, and give some reasons why you admire them.

describe a sportsperson: american football

As always, you should be writing some short notes in preparation, rather than any sentences. Remember that you really don’t have enough time to write more than a few words.

Note down any vocabulary that comes to mind and which you think will help. But mostly write down words that will help you to structure your speech – this makes your words sound more natural.

See our article on how to improve your IELTS speaking .

Here are my notes:

describe a sportsperson - Leo Messi

Leo Messi Argentina-> Barcelona Disability Awards 10 years ago Perseverance

These are obviously very basic, but by looking at them I can speak confidently without missing any of the points from the cue card. There are two useful words of vocabulary – disability and perseverance . These words, if properly used, sound impressive and add meaningfully to the speaking task. They are examples of “less common vocabulary” and can help improve your score.

It is helpful to have an idea about this cue card in your head before the exam. Certain topics often appear in IELTS speaking part 2 and you should be quite familiar with them before you sit the IELTS. Here are some guides to common topics:

Sample answer

I have highlighted some useful constructions for describing a famous person. These are useful for describing Leo Messi but of course can be adapted to other people. Some are quite basic – like “some would say” – while others are more complex, such as “his inspiring story of perseverance.”

Remember: you should never memorize answers for IELTS, but it is helpful to remember collocations – that means groups of words that are commonly used together.

So here is my answer to the cue card above:

My favourite sports person is Leo Messi. He’s a famous football player, and some would say he’s the best football player in the world. He started his career in Argentina, where he was born, but moved to Barcelona, in Spain, when he was a teenager. He had a disability, for which the Spanish team agreed to pay his medical bills. Despite his health problems, Messi developed into a modern legend . He has won numerous trophies over the course of his career , including five “world footballer of the year” awards – which is a world record. I remember first hearing about him about ten years ago, when he was first making headlines .  His life story caught my attention just as much as his incredible skills. I admire him because of his triumph over adversity . I think that his inspiring story of perseverance is a lesson for us all.

The phrases “making headlines” and “modern legend” are really useful for talking about famous people. You can incorporate these into your IELTS speaking part 2 answer like this.

Lebron James is a modern legend in the field of basketball. He has been making headlines for more than a decade.

More Sports Vocabulary

Sports is a common IELTS topic and it may occur in other parts of the exam, so make sure you know some basic vocabulary. If there is a sport that you really care about, learn some of the words that are commonly used to describe it. Here is a great collection of sports words to study.

One of the tricky things about sports in English is that there are some very subtle differences in language from sport to sport and between cultures. Here are some examples:

Basketball is played on a basketball court . Football is played on a football pitch . Baseball is played on a baseball field .

And so on. Knowing these slight differences can really help elevate your IELTS speaking score. Also, keep in mind that you are not describing a sport. Instead, you have been asked to describe a sportsperson. This means that you should be good with vocabulary for describing people .

YouTube Video

I have converted this lesson into a video format. If you want to hear me giving my sample answer in an audio recording, you can watch this video. You might find it useful to repeat my sentences to improve your pronunciation .

Ok, folks. That’s all for today’s lesson. I hope you are now able to describe a sportsperson. You can put your own ideas into the comment section below and I will give you some feedback.

I love playing basketball with my friends at the society’s basketball court.

We used to gather every evening at 6:30 and play a match regularly to maintain the stamina and the pace of precision shooting. The winning situation in this game is completely dependent on teamwork, the result could be truly magical. Basketball is the sport that keeps me captivated with its adrenaline-pumping excitement.

My favourite sport is everyone’s favourite. Yes, Cricket it is. Cricket is often known as the ‘ Gentleman’s Game .’ Almost every Indian loves cricket for us this sport is not just a game it is an emotion. The entire Nation keeps a keen eye on the World Cup match when our country is performing.

My idol is Hon’ble Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni. In my childhood, I tried to copy their style and always wished to be a good cricket player. As it is rightly said ‘Practice makes a Man Perfect.’ I also believed in it and practised with my school cricket team to become a good cricket player. The main reason cricket resonates with me is its rich history and traditions. It’s a sport that has been played for centuries, and it carries with it a sense of timelessness. The iconic venues, the legends of the game, and the celebrated rivalries all contribute to the sport’s allure. Whether it’s the Ashes battles between England and Australia or the fervent India-Pakistan contests, cricket has a way of gripping the hearts and minds of fans around the world.

Cricket not only teaches sportsmanship but also helps us learn about teamwork, patience, dedication, etc. My dream is to build a successful cricket career. To accomplish my goals I am planning to take admission in the cricket academy and learn from experts.

In conclusion, cricket is more than a sport to me; it’s a culture, a passion, and a source of endless joy in my life. Its rich heritage, technical intricacies, and life lessons will forever held close to my heart.

Essay on My Favourite Sport Badminton

Among all the indoor and outdoor activities, I love to play badminton the most. Badminton is played as an indoor and outdoor game but traditionally it was an indoor game. It is one of the most admired sports among children and adults. Badminton is my favourite sport because it requires speed, practice, precision, stamina, and accuracy all at the same time.

A player needs to be very attentive while playing badminton. When each stroke of the shuttle makes a ‘whoosh’ sound, it infuses a feeling of competitiveness and enthusiasm to perform extraordinarily against the opponent.

I am a huge admirer of Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu. Watching them perform makes me feel so proud and more inclined towards the sport. It’s my dream to play a badminton tournament at the National level and win for the country.

  • Who is the person?
  • What is his/her achievement
  • Why do you admire him?

Table of Contents

Being a sports enthusiast, I admire many sportspeople. However, one of them is exceptional, and hence, he is worth mentioning.

He is none other than the most outstanding batsman India has ever produced, Virat Kohli. His achievements are outstanding, and the first and foremost achievement is that under his captaincy, India won a test series in Australia for the first time.

India has played in Australia for 70 years but has never won a test series. When he became the captain, Virat Kohli worked with determination, dedication, and discipline to nurture the talent of his team players so that they would do remarkably well in Australia.

And the primary reason for admiring him is that Virat Kohli has this uncanny knack for thinking beyond the conventional domain. Most cricketers work on their skills, like batting or bowling; however, Virat Kohli has a different approach.

He works more on his fitness because he believes that having a fit body allows you to shine better in your cricketing career and this attitude of his works like a charm.

Now, many youngsters seek flashes of inspiration from him to lead their lives toward an impressive growth  trajectory , and by following Virat Kohli’s attitude, they can also climb the ladder to success. I admire him because he is a unique combination of determination, dedication, and discipline; a sportsman like him is a nation’s treasure.

Being a sports fanatic, I admire many sports persons. One of them is exceptional, and hence, he is worth mentioning. The person is the erstwhile captain of the Indian cricket team, and his name is Mr. Mehenders Singh Dhoni.

He has numerous achievements. The first and foremost is India’s first T20 World Cup in 2007. And after that, he won another World Cup in 2011. Besides that, under his charismatic leadership, India won the Champions Trophy in 2015.

I admire him for many reasons. First and foremost, he is one person who consistently exhibits immense confidence. There are such situations where the match could go to any side. But despite that, he always remains calm, and even the ordinary cricketers perform exceptionally well under his leadership. And he never complains that he doesn’t have the right kind of players. So, whatever team members he has, he always tries to bring the best out of them.

Apart from this, he always thinks beyond the conventional domain. He is a person who remains away from smartphones, media, and parties. He spends a simple life. These days, he is engaged in farming. So, he is setting a good precedent for people that he should care for our environment.

For a brief period, he worked in the Indian territorial army. He stayed with soldiers in inclement weather conditions. So, these are the things that make him unique. And he inspires others. That’s why most people seek flashes of inspiration from him to excel in their careers.

Although I admire many sportspersons, one of them is exceptional, and he is worth discussing. He is the current all-rounder player of the Indian cricket team, and his name is Ravinder Jadeja. His achievements are substantial. In cricket, we usually see good batters; some people are good at bowling, and some are good at fielding.

However, Ravindra Jadeja is a unique combination. He bats well in the middle order, where the task becomes difficult . Apart from this, he is a perfect left-arm spinner who tends to take a lot of wickets. Moreover, he is an agile fielder. He is good at throwing the ball. And due to this, there is terror among opposition batters against him.

And I admire him because he had a humble beginning; he was from a small family. And despite not being rich, he worked hard and led his career towards impressive growth.

Now he is around 35 years old, but still, the kind of effort set puts him. It looks like him. He is 18-20 years old, and other players also seek flashes of inspiration from him.

There is no denying this conviction that sports players are vital in our lives, and whenever we play sports at that time, it acts as a stress buster for us. There is one person I like, and his name is Cristiano Ronaldo, and he is a football player.

I admire him because he helps people in numerous ways, and in COVID-19, he organized many campaigns. He changed his 5-star hotel to a hospital to help others, which I like. He is a prominent businessman, and there are some companies from which he earns money. I also like some brands of his, and I want to wear those clothes.

Whenever I talk about Cristiano Ronaldo, my other friends also appreciate me, and I want to play football; most of the time, I play football with my friends and tell them I want to become Cristiano Ronaldo.

Most of my relatives also give me compliments on this topic, and sometimes, whenever I watch his videos on that time, I get immense inspiration. His videos inspire others and motivate them to do their best in their upcoming lives. So that’s the person that I like, and I want to become Cristiano Ronaldo.

There are many sportspeople whom I admire. But the most likely person is Usain Bolt. He was born in Jamaica in the mid-1980s. He belongs to a low-income family. But he is a very hard-working person. He started his journey from football. After that, his coach told him that he could go for athletics. So he started practising athletics for 100 to 200 meters. He is one of the best sportsmen in the world. He has a record of 100 meters in 9.68 seconds. He has won 10 times the Olympic champion for his country. He has won many prizes at the international level. He is very famous for his singing and cool nature. He inspires me to keep my diet plan. His hard work always pushes me to work hard. Because I have always wanted to be like him, he also serves poor people in an NGO, Which helps them to develop their skills. In every country, many people are very popular. But Usain Bolt is one of the most popular people in the world. I always follow him.

Here are some examples of follow-up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to the cue card “ Describe a sportsperson/athlete that you admire  ”.

1. Do teenagers like exercising in your country?

In my country, teenagers’ tendency to exercise has declined significantly because most remain engaged in gadgets and devices. Moreover, social media has made roads in their lives because they spend a boatload of time watching reels and short videos.

2. Do you think physical education is necessary?

Physical education is necessary because making money is secondary to our physical well-being. The first important asset we must have is our physical health, and getting an education about how to keep ourselves physically fit, what kind of food to eat, what kind of exercises to do, and what kind of exercises to avoid is a prudent idea. If we know these domains, then our physical health improves considerably.

3. How do you think physical education classes affect children’s development?

These classes lead to a paradigm shift in children’s thinking because their concepts become clear regarding how they can be fit. They come to know what they need to keep and what they need to avoid, which provides fruitful benefits both in the short and long term.

4. What kind of exercise do Indian people like to do?

Conventional physical exercises like yoga and going for a walk are popular among Indians. Most people refrain from exercising in a gym because they think that weight training can jeopardize the structure of their bones; due to this, they refrain from indulging in it.

Long Essay On My Favourite Sportsperson

Sport is a great way to get your body moving and your mind working, and there are so many different sports to choose from! In this essay, I’ll be discussing my favourite sport, football. You might be thinking ‘who isn’t a fan of football?’ But before we get into the nitty gritty of why I love the sport, let me tell you a little bit about myself.

Who is your favourite sportsperson?

There is no one sportsperson that I absolutely idolize. However, there are a few that come close to the top of my list. These athletes have displayed exemplary skills and dedication both on and off the court, making them some of my favourites.

1) LeBron James – LeBron James is without a doubt my favourite sportsperson. He has always been one of the best players in the NBA, and has continued to amaze spectators with his talents even after joining the Lakers. His drive and determination are unparalleled, and he never gives up on his dreams. He is an inspiration to all young athletes out there, and I look forward to watching him continue to dominate the league for years to come.

2) Serena Williams – Serena Williams is another amazing athlete who I enjoy watching tremendously. She is a multiple Grand Slam champion, as well as being ranked number 1 in the world numerous times. Her play both on Court and off is exciting to watch, and she always seems to bring her A-game when it matters most. Her hard work ethic is admirable, and she truly represents what it means to be a dedicated athlete.

3) Michael Jordan – Michael Jordan may not be currently playing at the same level as he did in his early days, but that does not mean he isn’t still one of the greatest basketball players ever. His talent was simply unmatched, and he inspired countless youngsters to pick up a ball and try their hand at this amazing sport . His competitive spirit and willingness to give everything he has on the court is admirable, and I admire him for that more than anything. He will always be one of my favourites.

Why are they your favourite?

There are many reasons why I love the sportsperson that I do. Some of it is due to the person’s individual characteristics, such as their athletic prowess or their charisma on and off the field. But some of it is simply because they represent everything that is great about sports, and I admire them for it.

Some of my favourite sportspersons have a combination of both personal and professional qualities that appeal to me. They are both talented and successful, but they also have a down-to-earth personality that makes them relatable. They are also willing to give back to their community, whether through charity work or by supporting other athletes in their competitions.

Ultimately, what draws me to these sporting heroes is their passion for the game. Whether they are playing for fun or trying to win a championship, these individuals are fully committed to their craft. And that dedication is something that I admire deeply.

What makes them stand out from the rest?

When it comes to sport, there are few people who can boast the level of success and acclaim that athletes such as Pele, Michael Jordan and LeBron James have achieved. However, there are a select few sportspersons who transcend the sport they play to become universally admired figures. These individuals are known for their thrilling performances on the field or court, their charismatic personalities and, most importantly, for their passion for their chosen sport.

One such sportsman is Roger Federer. A Swiss national, Federer has cemented himself as one of the greatest tennis players of all time and is widely considered to be one of the best ambassadors for his sport. He has won 16 Grand Slam titles – more than any other man in history – including seven Wimbledon Championships and five US Open Championships. His exceptional record on both hardcourt surfaces and grass courts has made him one of the most popular athletes in the world.

Federer’s unique mix of athleticism, artistry and charisma has drawn legions of fans around the world. His love affair with tennis is evident in everything he does – from his playing style to his celebrations on court. Federer is a true ambassador for tennis, not only on a professional level but also off it; he is heavily involved in charitable work and regularly gives back to his community through initiatives such as The Roger Federer Foundation.

Federer’s achievements on the tennis court have made him an icon not only within his own sport but also within the global community. He is a role model to aspiring athletes, and his passion for tennis has inspired generations of fans to get involved in the sport themselves. Federer’s achievements are truly unique and make him one of the most celebrated sportsmen in the world.

What would you say is their biggest strength?

There is no single answer to this question as athletes have different strengths that make them successful. However, some of the most common characteristics that make an athlete successful are discipline, determination, and hard work.

Discipline is key for any athlete, and it is especially important for athletes who compete in sports with a high level of skill or competition. Athletes need to be able to focus on their goals and stay focused during competitions. Discipline also translates into other areas of life – if an athlete is able to maintain discipline in their everyday life, they are likely to be successful in other endeavors as well.

Athletes also need determination. It can be difficult for athletes to continue working hard even when they are not winning or making progress. They must have the will power to keep going even when things are not going their way. This determination enables athletes to overcome difficult challenges and reach their goals.

Finally, hard work is essential for any athlete who wants to achieve success. Hard work does not guarantee success, but it is definitely necessary. If an athlete does not put in the time and effort required to be successful, there is no chance of achieving goals.

What would you say is their biggest weakness?

When it comes to their sport, many people would say that one of the athletes’ biggest weaknesses is their lack of discipline. They can be very impulsive, and this can lead to them making poor choices on the field or court. Another common flaw for many athletes is a lack of focus. They may be able to perform at a high level for short periods of time, but they will struggle when it comes to sustaining a high level of performance over an extended period of time.

If you could have one word to describe them, what would it be?

I absolutely adore athletes who are very disciplined and work hard at their sport. To me, these athletes embody the word “hardworking”. They never give up, no matter how tough the challenge seems. I admire their dedication to their sport and the passion they have for it. Some of my favourites in this category are Serena Williams, Michael Jordan, and Usain Bolt.

Each of these athletes is highly acclaimed for their incredible accomplishments in their respective sports. Serena Williams is a world champion tennis player who has won 22 singles titles and six doubles titles. Michael Jordan is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, with six NBA championships and more than thirty-five MVP awards to his name. And Usain Bolt is an Olympic champion sprinter who has won eight gold medals in total: four in the 100 metres, two in the 200 metre sprint, and two in the 4×100 metre relay.

These athletes are truly phenomenal examples of hard work and determinationpaying off handsomely in terms of accolades and fame. They have inspired me to be more dedicated to my own personal goals, and to never give up on anything I set out to do.

Sample 1 – Football

I would like to talk about my favorite sport, which is football, the king of sport to everyone in Vietnam.

I first knew about it when I was 15 years old. It was my classmates who invited me to join his football club with other friends in his neighborhood. I had a great time with them, for sure.

I used to play it after school with my friends as it was the only free time I have for the whole day. Nowadays I am pretty busy with my work and study so I had to give up the hobby. But sometimes if I have a long holiday I will arrange a small football match with my old classmates. Those football matches often end with us being in a small restaurant where we drink and chit-chat.

I love this sport for several reasons: First, it helps to improve my physical and mental health. Second, I can also learn teamwork skills which are crucial in all aspects of life. Last but not least, since I started playing this sport, I have made a lot of friends who are now my best playmates.

Sample 2 – Swimming

I would like to talk about my favorite sport, which is swimming.

I first knew about it when I was 10 years old. My mom thought that I should learn to swim at an early age so that I wouldn’t drown in the water. Frankly speaking, I kinda enjoyed the swimming class as I guess I was born with the Water element.

Nowadays, I still keep the habit of going to the swimming pool every Saturday afternoon with my boyfriend who is also a fan of this water sport. Only when I am snowed under a heavy workload do I ever skip a day.

I love this sport for several reasons: First, it helps to keep my body in perfect shape. Second, swimming is a great sport for me to improve my height. Last but not least, since I started this sport, I barely feel stressed or overworked. All in all, I suggest this sport is a must-have pastime for everyone.

Sample 3 – Badminton

I would like to talk about my favorite sport, which is badminton, a popular sport in Vietnam.

I first knew about it when I was 15 years old. My father thought that I was a bit overweight so he forced me to join a badminton training course with his friends. I have to admit that even though I was a bit upset for being made to do something against my will, I soon got into it after only a week.

Unfortunately, these days, as a white-collar, I mostly spend my day in the office and only reach home by 7 p.m. So, I do not have any time for badminton anymore.

Anyway, I still love this sport for several reasons: First, it helped me to lose some weight which led to better health. Second, when I practiced the sport in the sports center near my house, I made plenty of cool friends who supported me a lot in life. Last but not least, after knowing this sport, I would say for sure I could overcome my timidity of being a big size person and make an effort to change my look. All in all, I suggest this sport is a must-have pastime for everyone.

Sample 4 – Taekwondo

I would like to talk about my favorite sport, which is Taekwondo, a kind of martial art from Korea.

I first knew about it when I was 15 years old. My parents thought that I should learn something to defend myself from bullies at school. Also, I was a bit overweight so this was a perfect sport for me. I soon got into it quickly and it has become my most favorite pastime activity even until now when I am 23 years old.

Oftentimes, as I have no classes on Sunday afternoon, I will spend my free time enjoying this sport with other martial artists in a sports club near my house. They are quite helpful in showing me some tactics and effective moves. Sometimes we hold some small matches for fun and have a feast in a small restaurant afterward.

There are several reasons why I am truly in love with Taekwondo. First, thanks to this sport, I could lose some weight and at the moment I have a kind of a fit body. Second, since I started this sport I have hardly catch any common health issues like fever, flu, or cold. Third, my social circle has been getting wider and wider as I have met so many cool mates who come from all walks of life. All in all, I suggest this sport is a must-have pastime to try.

Sample 5 – Running

I would like to talk about my favorite sport, which is running, an easy and free sport to try for everyone.

I only started it a few months ago thanks to my colleagues who are professional runners. I was convinced by how well-shaped they look and how passionate they are about this sport. Therefore, I decided to follow them and try running in the park near my office. Honestly speaking, I fell in love with it pretty quickly after a week though at the beginning I was almost exhausted.

I always reach the park at 5 p.m after work then run around it until 6 p.m. On Saturday when I only work in the morning, I spend more than two hours running in the afternoon and I have to admit that Saturday is the most productive day for me to run. Sometimes when my colleagues can join me in the park, we have a great journey together and share fun office stories during our breaks.

There are several reasons why I am fond of this sport. First, it is a rather cheap and easy sport to try. All we need is a pair of running shoes and a bottle of water. Second, this is a sport that everyone of all age brackets and genders can enjoy, which also brought me some new friends while doing it in the park. They are quite nice and friendly people. Third, since I started this sport I hardly catch any common health issues like fever, flu, or cold. What’s more? I can perform better at work and show higher productivity only after a month of training. I mean I can work for longer hours without feeling tired. All in all, I recommend that everyone try this sport.

During our summer holidays, we even went to summer camp together to learn cricket and made a lot of memories. Moreover, we also invented new and our own handshake which only we both knew. This bonding between us has taught me that family doesn’t end with blood because my best friend is no less than my family.

Last year, in summer we both went with his parents to watch a cricket match on the ground. From then, we both started liking it and decided to go and learn the sport together. Cricket is a very interesting sport and it has a lot of advantages to it. During the holidays we went to learn for 6 hours a day and learnt that we need to be good at both bowling and batting. Initially, we were taught how to hold the ball and catches. They focused more on running as Feilding is also necessary for Cricket. Our sports academy has many learners, we divide ourselves into a group and play matches every Sunday.

All these are making our bonding even more stronger. We always wait for holidays to play with each other and remain friends.

Introduction

Association football, further generally known as football or soccer, doesn't have a classical history. Notwithstanding any parallels to other ball games played around the world, FIFA has recognised that no literal connection exists with any game played in age outside Europe.

The ultramodern rules of association football are grounded on the mid-19th century standards to standardise the extensively varying forms of football played in the public seminaries of England.

The ultramodern game of association football began with mid-nineteenth century sweats between original football clubs to regularize the varying sets of rules, climaxing in the conformation of The Football Association in London, England in 1863.

The rules drafted by the association allowed clubs to play with each other without disagreement and specifically banned both running off the ball (except by goalkeepers) and hacking during open field play.

After the fifth meeting of the association, a schism surfaced between association football and the rules played by the Rugby academy, latterly to be called rugby football. Football has been an Olympic sport ever since the alternate ultramodern Summer Olympic Games in 1900.
