Vedalam review: Ajith turns Phantom, vilely and violent
Vedalam is but an ajith kumar show (all the way where menon and haasan are wasted). the man arrives with a big bang and never tires of bashing up baddies -- but now and then taking a break to cleanse society of minor evils like fooling law courts or cheating on wives. certainly not for children, who might wonder how phantom sprung out of their favourite comic books in such a horrifically mutated form..
Vedalam Direction: Siva Cast: Ajith Kumar, Lakshmi Menon, Shruti Haasan. Rating: 1.5/5
Tamil cinema often lets its plus points be marred by minuses -- which only seem to be multiplying as time goes by. Nobody can ever deny that Tamil films can be gutsy. They tackle themes which Bollywood will not touch with a bargepole. They plant their stories in refreshingly rural settings, clothe their actors in “veshti” (dhoti) or half-sari (the link between a “paavaadai” or full-length skirt and sari) and use overly village rituals and festivals as background or embellishment.
But, Tamil movies are also unashamedly hero worshippers (not really heroine worshippers) -- a broad hint of how patriarchal the society is. So, it is not surprising we have men like Rajinikanth or Kamal Haasan or Ajith Kuma r or Vijay who have to flex their muscles on the screen to tell the world that they are supermen -- the message aimed particularly at female fans, who are ready to faint at the sight of Ajith’s ripping muscles or Rajinikanth’s tricks. So what if Ajith loses anything tender in the bargain or Rajinikanth begins to look like an inane magician.
Vedalam -- which this Diwali is competing with an undoubtedly better-made and conceived film of Haasan, Thoongaavanam -- has been written only to exhibit a muscular Ajith, but Siva’s work is at same time careful about the star’s core image. He has to be a good man, who has to be a caring brother to his sister, Tamizh (Lakshmi Menon). And why? For, he has promised her parents to take care of her. Gentlemen keep promises, Ajith has to be one. Otherwise, his fans will be devastated.
Ajith’s Ganesh (there are frequent references to the Hindu god) is a vicious battering ram who pounds people to pulp, while playing the noble samaritan. He is also as cunning as a fox: look at the way he exposes the lawyer, Swathi (Shruti Haasan), when she coerces him to give a false testimony in court (the legal system also comes under the scanner here), and see the way Ganesh (whose nickname is Vedalam or Phantom, minus of course the costume) fixes a two-timing Laxmidas (Soori).
And Ganesh is a cabbie in Kolkata (pray, why this city, I have no clue, and some of the scenes appear not to have been shot there), a do-gooder, who has an ace goonda like Kolkata Kali (Rajendran) eating out of his palm -- all because the taxi-driver tells the thug that he looks “beautiful”. Where will all this silly romp end?
At the very end, when Ganesh -- who migrates from Chennai (where he was a street ruffian, breaking men’s heads and extorting money for land deals) to Kolkata with Tamizh (who joins an art school and sees her artistic talent bloom) -- vanquishes three evil brothers. The reason is as frivolous as a flickering flame in a hurricane. The methods he adopts will have the Mossad swooning in shock (Why did we not think of this, they would bang their heads on the wall).
Ganesh appears like Phantom at the flick of a frame, and silences dozens of sophisticated guns, and the men holding them crumble like nine-pins as the ball rolls, all fire and fury. The sight is ugly, downright gory, and I wonder how women in the audiences (children!) stomach such orchestrated violence performed with the relish of tucking in a plate of piping hot biriyani. Which Ganesh does with aplomb.
Vedalam is in a way an extension of Bahubali, where the evil is killed, and coming as the Ajith starrer does during Deepavali, the work is bound to strike an emotional note with all those who still believe, in this day and age, that the world needs supermen to get rid of bad guys, and yes supermen who are tender by day and tough by night, who caress their lovers as if they were delicate flowers, who love their sisters as if they were the last word in fragility.
At 157 minutes, Vedalam is but an Ajith Kumar show (all the way where Menon and Haasan are wasted). The man arrives with a big bang and never tires of bashing up baddies -- but now and then taking a break to cleanse society of minor evils like fooling law courts or cheating on wives.
Certainly not for children, who might wonder how Phantom sprung out of their favourite comic books in such a horrifically mutated form.

Vedalam (Vedhalam) Movie Review
What is it about: It’s a story of a local goon Ganesh/Vedalam (Ajith Kumar) who lives a double life to cover his bad deeds from past, which has an ulterior motive to protect his sister Tamizh (Lakshmi Menon). The secret which holds these two characters forms the crux of the story directed by Siva.
Why it’s disappointing: Just like any other masala festival flick, this again lures in to clichés which have been fed to us endlessly. The story seems to be loosely based on many films which are inspired by this genre. The problem lies in making the protagonist becoming a mass hero rather than a performing one, which ultimately loses the essence of the character building in the movie. Siva dives in to the same pool of mass, which in the first half tries to wander with a cute and innocent face. The movie focuses entirely on the MASS factor.
The first half lurks around with Soori, Shruti Hassan, Bala Saravanan, Swaminathan and Ashwin. Who do their respective appearances without getting registered. Vedalam had a decent plot with a potential which could have turned in to a racy thriller, but it loses big time in the very first scene with special ops trying to nab an international criminal. A scene which required a careful execution turns out to be funny with fast movements which seemed like it has been fast forwarded, a movie of this calibre and budget can do much better.
Shruti Hassan seems to be happy with her short screen presence. No matter what is being said she is a very potential actress, who have been wasting her talent doing mindless masala flicks.
Siva could have done way better, but he was busy making the fan base happy and forgot about the universal appeal. And also could have shortened the extended climax which gets little tiring.
What to watch out for: The lead of the movie “Thala Ajith”, he’s one of the two characters who carries this movie which gets paralyzed few minutes in to it. Both the characters played by Ajith were really good, he did it religiously with a great twist of mass, style and wit. The Ganesh character was innocent and loveable, whereas the Vedalam character was stupendously interesting. Especially the transformation which was smooth and in the second half as Vedalam he did some scenes which were applause worthy. The dialogues by Siva given for his characters were well written, which creates a good mill among the fans.
After Ajith another character which requires a special mention is Lakshmi Menon, her character was rejected by many leading actress of this time before it was offered to her. I’m pretty sure the actors who had rejected would have regretted after watching the movie. She had a meaty role, in spite of playing a sister’s role to Ajith, her screen space is pretty much parallel to Ajith. She did a commendable job as Tamizh.
The action sequence pre-interval was a good touch, which leaves the audience with a hope for a better second half. Post interval there are few scenes which makes it up for the first half. Siva who lurks around in the first half, gets it on track in the second.
The cinematography was vivid by Vetri and was cut at god-speed by Ruben. Music by Anirudh was an added flavour to this festival treat, my favourite picks are “Veera Vinayaka” and “Aaluma Doluma”, and both were composed well and had the tempo which was precisely required for the respective situations in the movie. The background score was apt making the MASS scenes match the festive mood.
Verdict: Siva gave THALA fans a great treat this Diwali, which lurks around too much, whose act is brought on track by Ajith’s oozing charm, style and mass factor. “Vedalam” is a decent outing this Diwali with family which succeeds to make the cash registers ringing.

VEDALAM SONGS REVIEW
Vedalam is one of the most awaited movies of the year starring Ajith Kumar, Shruti Haasan and Lakshmi Menon in the lead roles. ‘Rockstar’ Anirudh has composed the songs for this Siva directorial.
Anirudh has duplicated his voice track to bring in an interesting force to his vocals in this track. This supposedly bhakthi padal-like composition is not deprived of Anirudh's usual love for trance. The song has overriding instrumentation to deliver the power of the emotion. Daf rolls, electric guitars and innumerable sound patches deliver a vigorous song.
Invoking some girl power, this erotic hip-hop track transforms into an interesting Rn'B interlude and then again settles into a funky Beyonce-sque song. Shruti's truly international rendition is the attraction and this will also be your pick during the pub scenes. The is the kind of track you would like to turn up both your volume and bass up for.
A mesmeric pathos composed like an authentic light classical-rock song, Anirudh's ability to fuse any known genre with the local flavor acts as a major plus when it comes to the overall sound of the song. The Veenai backed by the guitars on distortion in the first interlude and the portions involving the backup singers lends it a beautiful feel.
Anirudh's strongpoint house-mix is in top form here. Making use of the already famous 'Theri' catch phrase, this theme track is a colourful blend of all possible effects and loops. An example of effective programming, the track is bound to bring an eruption of cheer when played onscreen.
The ideal chart-buster of the album, this Rokesh-written folk-EDM song is made with a compulsion to instigate the dancer in us. The sudden rhythm breakdowns, increase and decrease in the pace of the song, derivative BGM and a rap portion in the prelude are all the necessary elements for a proper kuthu number.

Ajith's baasha wannabe.
Ajith has given 100% and shows both his sides in a very convincing manner. His childlike innocence and his polar opposite vampire looks are fantastic. Ajith carries the movie despite all the predictability and cliches. Ajith's dialogue delivery is exemplary in sentiment scenes and rowdy slang in the... (more)

Sparks do fly, but not frequently enough
When there is a mass hero, action comes along like his shadow and Vedalam has its fair share of 'thiruvizha' action moments resulting from the revenge theme of the film. There are three hunky villains falling into the commercial cinema template completely. (more)

Vedhalam is Ajith's one man show and it might enthrall his ardent fans for others, it's a formulaic film with few enjoyable moments.
Had director Siva concentrated more on the flashback portions, we would have definitely got an enjoyable entertainer. Vedhalam is yet another middling movie where logic is taken for granted and purely rides on the stardom of Ajith. (more)

A Theri Mass Deepavali Treat
Despite with an ordinary story and limited scope for suspense and thrill, Siva has managed to maintain some suspense element by hiding some details about the lead characters throughout the film and they make the film much more interesting than a mere super hero film. . (more)
