How to Create a University Presentation?

A university presentation is a document that students and staff make to present a topic. These types of documents are also used to introduce the university to new students.

Presentations come in handy when you need to present a topic at school . The features in applications you choose to make it on are convenient for you. If you need to create one for your class, read our tips below.

1. Decide on a Topic

You can't make a proper presentation without a topic in mind. Determine the kind of topic that you want to tackle. Almost all presentations are informative, and these help a lot during lectures. Create a list of possible subtopics from your main topic.

2. Research the Facts

Get relevant information based on your list of topics and subtopics. Make an outline of all the information that you have gathered—from facts, statistics, and other useful data. If you're working with a group for your presentation, it's easier if you assign each member a topic to research on.

3. Write Content

Open a blank slide and start writing your content. Begin with a catchy introduction. You can use a video, a quote, an iconic poster , or a historical fact to kickstart your presentation. Statistics work better when you're making an academic presentation. Just write the content in the simplest manner possible.

4. Add Details

It's not just content that adds beauty to the presentation. The details also contribute a lot as well. Add graphics and colors to your presentation. Use tables, pie charts, and diagrams to present statistical data accurately. Doing so will make viewers understand your topic better.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. — Nelson Mandela

Whether you are a teacher or a student, making presentations has (probably) become a regular task. It’s even more than that, just like a routine, right? But still, you shouldn’t have to spend too much time in finding the right template. Fortunately, with this template, you can focus more on your content and less on the presentation theme!

Additionally, this theme can suit any presentation ABOUT education too.

This clean template for presentation is modern and stylish. It showcases abstract bubble shapes with royal colors : more specifically, creme, gold, and blue accents. All the slides come with the background and photos that are inserted in the master layout.

Finally, the presentation theme “University” contains a selection of 6 master slide layouts : title (cover) slide, title and content (2 variants), section (2), and a ‘thank you!’ closing slide. On this last slide, there is a picture placeholder, so that you can easily insert your own photo for the contact information.

Shapes are 100% editable : colors and sizes can be easily changed (go to the Slide Master View).

Includes 2 slide option designs: Standard (4:3) and Widescreen (16:9).

strategies, techniques, and tools for strong slide design, and maximum presentation quality.

Prior to delivering a talk, it is important to prepare and set yourself up for success with a strong slide deck. Depending on the nature of your presentation, the type of speaking engagement, your institution, and other factors and considerations, there are different kinds of approaches and priorities when it comes to slide design. This section includes some tips that will assist you with designing your slides to prepare for your presentation.

Slides drive home the main ideas of your research and play an important role to deliver a strong presentation. After reviewing the Fundamentals of Slide Design , use these resources to create and assess your slides to ensure that you have considered and included important components that make for an effective presentation.

The assertion-evidence slide structure is one effective technique to designing effective slides. In conjunction with the webinar on “Better Than Bullets: Transforming Slide Design” by Melissa Marshall, this checklist was developed as a resource for assertion-evidence slides but can be applied more generally to other types of slide designs. Consider the style, typography, and layout of your slides and what it might look like to incorporate these elements with an assertion-evidence slide structure in mind.

A diy guide to starting your own journal, universities, ai and the common good, artificial intelligence and academic integrity: striking a balance, create an onboarding programme for neurodivergent students.

As a presenter, your main job is to guide the audience through your argument in the clearest, most engaging, most efficient way possible. You must respect the audience’s time and attention. This means being mindful of how long your presentation is, what you’re including in your slides, and importantly, how it is all packaged and presented.

A great presenter is one who is intentional: each element in the presentation serves a clear function and is intended to support the audience’s understanding of the content.

Here are 10 tips to keep in mind to ensure your presentation hits the mark

1. Any time you put something on your slides, its primary purpose is to help the audience, not you

Many presenters will add copious text or other elements to help themselves remember points they want to make. However, this is usually less helpful for the audience (most of this information belongs in presenter notes, and not on the slides). Think of yourself like a director of a movie. What do you want the audience to focus on at any given moment? What features on your slides will enhance the verbal point you are making and which will distract from it? Be intentional about what you include on your slides, and only include elements that serve a clear and helpful function for the audience.

2. Condense text to the main question or key points of the slide

It may be tempting to write out snippets of the script wholesale and add them to the slides, but this often results in PowerPoint karaoke, where the audience is simply watching you read the text out loud to them. While text is certainly useful for helping to concretise points or make slides more accessible, be judicious about what you include. Each slide should make one or two clear points. It’s better to have more slides with less content than fewer slides that are jam-packed. Of course, the amount of text you include will also be determined by the type of presentation you are giving. If students will be using your slides as a study aid, for example, you may want to include more information than if you are creating a research talk for a conference.

Presentation slide

3. Avoid using too many colours, fonts or animations

Consider elements such as fonts, colours and animations as tools in your presentation toolkit. These elements should be used sparingly and only when they serve a clear purpose. I’m sure you’ve all attended a talk with colours bright enough to burn your retinas or crammed with “fun” fonts such as Comic Sans. Try to refrain from doing that. Animations that allow certain elements to appear or disappear along with your presentation — such as bullet points that appear as you say them — can help direct the attention of the audience. Colour contrasts are primarily helpful for visual segmentation or bringing attention to particular elements. Fonts, colours or flashy animations that are purely decorative are more distracting than helpful.

Presentation slide illustrating simple design without too many elements or colours

4. Avoid colour combinations that are hard to read

Be mindful of how colours interact with each other to either facilitate or inhibit comprehension. White text on black (or the reverse) is often a safe bet. Don’t overdecorate! (See above).

5.  If you’re showing a graph, orient the audience to the axes before plotting the data and make sure they can actually see all of it

I typically show the axes and labels first, making sure to orient everyone to the variables and how they are going to be visualised, and then I reveal the data. This ensures that everyone understands how to interpret the visualisation they are about to see. It is also helpful to restate the key prediction and tell the audience what they should expect to see if the prediction is true, and then plot the data. Use large sizes and clear fonts. I’ve heard way too many people say things like: “You probably can’t read this but…” To that, I want to say: “But you’re the one making the slide! You did this to us!” Don’t be that person.

Presentation slide illustrating need for clear, legible graphics

6.  Use high-resolution images or videos

This is especially true for presentations that will be projected onto a larger surface. If it’s fuzzy on your computer screen, it will look even fuzzier when magnified and projected. Try to integrate high-resolution images and vector graphics to avoid this. When your images contain text, delete those portions and re-enter the text in text boxes that will scale up much more clearly when magnified.

7. When illustrating results, identify one or two key graphs to make your point

The temptation is often to show the audience every single result you found, but this dilutes the overall message you are trying to send. There’s no need to visualise everything: you should focus on the key graphs that tell most or all of the story. If you have built up the presentation in the right way, when the audience see your data visualisation, they will immediately understand what you found and whether it supports your hypothesis. That’s how clear and accessible the graph should be.

Presentation slides illustrating why one or two graphs are clearer than using four

8.  Don’t overload the audience with unnecessary complex jargon or acronyms

Every time you introduce a new term or a brand new acronym (BNA), you are asking the audience to do you a favour and commit this new item to working memory. The audience doesn’t know your presentation; they don’t know what’s going to be important later and what isn’t. They’re trusting that you are only presenting information to them that is relevant and they’re doing their best to follow along. Make this process as easy and enjoyable as possible for them. Be judicious with what you ask them to remember or commit to memory. If you can explain a concept without jargon, avoid the jargon!

9. Enhance accessibility

The Web Accessibility Initiative has a great set of guidelines that I will summarise here. Use easy-to-read fonts in large sizes. Make sure there is enough contrast between colours to make them discernible. When giving virtual talks, consider turning on automatic closed captioning. If it’s feasible, provide annotated slide handouts. During the presentation itself, speak clearly and loudly, avoiding unnecessarily complex vocabulary or culturally specific idioms. Where possible, use a microphone. You should also try to verbally describe pertinent parts of visual information on your slides, such as graphics or videos.

10. Use outline slides and marker slides to segment information

Research shows that we understand and remember information better when it comes in bite-size pieces; think of chapters in a book. To incorporate this structure into your talk, break apart the presentation into smaller pieces. Always incorporate an outline slide that previews the structure of the talk and gives the audience a sense of what to expect. Also, use marker slides to communicate that a new section is beginning. And make sure to wrap up each section with a summary slide.

by Kate Shewaga

If you're a content creator looking to take your user-generated content (UGC) game to the next level, you're in the right place. In this post, I'll share my secrets for creating a customized Microsoft PowerPoint pitch deck that will help you connect with brands and businesses like a pro.

Why customization matters

In the booming world of UGC, it's essential to stand out from the crowd. One fantastic way to do this is by creating a tailored pitch deck that showcases your unique skills and style. Customization is key, and I'll walk you through the process using a template from Microsoft Create .

Choose your template

Start with a template so you can hit the ground running with a clean, polished design. Visit Microsoft Create and explore their PowerPoint templates and pitch deck templates . When you find a design you like, download it.

For this tutorial, I used the Light sales pitch presentation template. This sleek and professional template is the perfect starting point for your UGC pitch deck.

The Light Sales Pitch template for PowerPoint

Personalize the cover page

First impressions matter, so make sure your cover page is on point. I always include the name of the brand I'm pitching to show that I've created this presentation specifically for them. It's a small detail that goes a long way in demonstrating your dedication and professionalism.

Customize colors and images

Next, it's time to make the template your own. I customize the colors to match my personal brand and incorporate professional photos I've taken myself. This helps the pitch deck feel authentic and shows off my unique style.

The Minimalist Light Sales Pitch template for PowerPoint

Showcase your work

To give brands a taste of what you can do, include a few concept ideas and sample videos you've created in their niche. I like to add multiple pages with videos of my recent work to highlight my skills and experience. Just remember to watermark any videos featuring products that brands haven't purchased yet!

Include testimonials and analytics

Social proof is powerful, so don't be afraid to include testimonials or analytics from your previous high-performing content. This demonstrates your track record of success and helps build trust with potential brand partners.

Wrapping up

Creating a short, informative PowerPoint pitch deck can be the secret sauce that makes your UGC pitch unforgettable. By customizing a professional template with your own colors, images, and work samples, you'll be well on your way to landing those coveted brand deals.

News from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Presentations on UWM’s new brand personality are April 9 and 10

All UWM faculty and staff are invited to presentations on UWM’s new brand personality.

The Division of Marketing, Communications & University Relations has partnered with Carnegie Dartlet on a refresh of the UWM brand. In December, about 100 faculty, staff and students provided input on UWM’s brand personality during on-campus workshops. Four hundred more provided feedback via an online survey. Carnegie used this information to develop UWM’s personality, which will serve as a foundation for marketing and communication efforts campus-wide.

Carnegie will do three presentations on the brand personality on April 9 and 10. The information will be the same in all three presentations, so faculty and staff only need to attend one. The sessions will be:

  • 9-10 a.m. Tuesday, April 9 , UWM Student Union, Fireside Lounge
  • 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, April 9 , Fireside Lounge
  • 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, April 10 , Fireside Lounge

No registration is required. The presentations will be in person, with no remote option. However, one session will be recorded for viewing at a later date.

Contact Chief Marketing Officer Michelle Johnson at [email protected] with questions or to request access to the recorded session.

Vice President Kamala Harris says government agencies that use AI tools will be required to verify that those tools do not endanger the rights and safety of the American people. After Thursday's announcement, each agency by December must have a set of concrete safeguards that guide everything from facial recognition screenings at airports to AI tools that help control the electric grid or determine mortgages and home insurance.

CS Diversity Project Presentations 2024

Please join us on  March 27, 2024; 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm  at the Big Data Hub Presentation Studio to learn about the amazing projects our students are doing to advance Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Justice in Computing Science Research and Professional Practices.

The event will start with a brief introduction to CSDC Diversity Awards, and continue with Project Presentations.

Our four shortlisted projects for CS Diversity Award 2024 are:

Project: Constructing a Different Imagination Beyond “AI Outperforming Humans”

Team: Weina Jin

Advisors: Ghassan Hamarneh, Xiaoxiao Li

Abstract:  As artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly impactful to society and in high-stakes domains, it is important to develop ethical AI techniques to ensure AI is equal and just. To do so, our project first proposed that the use of AI does not devalue workers’ work, and that the development of AI should prioritize essential human and social values. Following these principles, we conducted a clinical user study and found that, when AI is collaborating with humans, the utility of AI is to help users achieve complementary task performance that outperforms either user of AI alone (Jin and Fatehi et al., 2024). Explainable AI (XAI) techniques are a necessary condition to support humans in achieving complementary performance. We developed the clinical XAI guidelines that guide the responsible evaluation of XAI algorithms for clinical settings (Jin et al. 2023). The guidelines emphasize on how well XAI can collaborate with humans. Project: Global Mental Health Initiatives and Social Media Analysis for Anti-Stigma Awareness Campaigns

Team: Maureen Herbert, Naveen Nandakumar, Fayad Chowdhury

Advisors: Steven Bergner (PhD CS, SFU)

Abstract:  Our project provides a data-driven digital solution for mental health anti-stigma and awareness campaigns. We begin by analyzing global mental health research initiatives outlined in the WHO's Mental Health ATLAS Reports 2020 across 150 countries. Through descriptive statistics, we assess each country's preparedness regarding resources allocated to mental health research, availability of medical personnel and facilities, and existing education programs, focusing on high, middle, and low-income regions as defined by the WHO. We define a preparedness metric and identify gaps among the regions. Utilizing data science, natural language processing, and machine learning techniques such as topic modelling on Reddit data, we discover underlying themes and topics of discussion within the community. Using this, we suggest various campaign strategies. Our findings are presented on a website to promote public discussion and community awareness, encouraging help-seeking behaviour and reducing mental health stigma globally.

Project: MosaicMate

Team: Kian Hosseinkhani, Peiman Zhiani, Enoch Muwanguzi, Alison Lu, Kasey Le and SFU Blueprint

Adviser: Tyler D'silva (SFU Blueprint Exec)

Abstract: The MosaicMate targets a diverse audience, including newcomers, immigrants, refugees, and individuals from varied backgrounds, aiming to facilitate their settlement and employment in Canada. By tailoring our design to accommodate users with different levels of language proficiency and educational backgrounds, we focused on our commitment to cultural sensitivity with debiasing AI. By employing easier access to essential settlement and employment services, we help newcomers, immigrants, refugees, and individuals from varied backgrounds find services and programs to assist their settlement and employment in Canada, making the chatbot directly contribute to digital inclusion and justice.

Project : A Duo is All You Need for Fairness in Distilled Models

Team : Hoi Fai Lam, Hong Dung Nguyen, JangHyeon Lee

Abstract: Due to the advent of large language models (LLMs), the need for model compression techniques like knowledge distillation (KD) has become crucial. These methods are key to enhancing AI's efficiency, making advanced technologies accessible to a wider audience, including those with limited computing resources. However, challenges arise as smaller models often show greater biases, particularly in critical applications like hate speech detection, potentially leading to unfair treatment of marginalized groups. Addressing this issue, our project aims to develop compact models that not only match the performance of their larger counterparts but also emphasize fairness and equity, in alignment with Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Justice (EDIJ) principles. By refining the KD process and conducting thorough evaluations, we seek to minimize these biases, contributing to the creation of more inclusive and fair digital spaces for all.

Big research, little time: Medical neuroscience student wins 3 Minute Thesis finals

Mia Samardzic - March 28, 2024

Last week, 10 graduate students took to the stage to compete in Dal’s annual 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, with medical neuroscience PhD student Reynaldo Popoli earning this year’s winning title with his presentation on improving the quality of life for patients living with the neurological disorder ALS.

The 3MT finals, held Tuesday, March 19 in the Dalhousie Student Union Building, challenged competitors to present their research to a non-specialist audience in three engaging minutes or less, using only one static PowerPoint slide as a visual aid.

Five master’s and five PhD students shared their research, representing the Faculties of Medicine, Science and Health.

Making strides in medicine

Along with taking home the title of Dal’s newest 3MT champion after winning over the judging panel, Popoli won a cash prize of $1,000 and the opportunity to represent Dalhousie at the Eastern 3MT regionals at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique in Quebec this June.

“I feel incredibly grateful, especially to my colleagues that allowed me to practice my presentation and provided invaluable feedback,” he says.

Popoli’s presentation called attention to the devastating impacts of ALS — a disease that affects the cells in our bodies that control our muscles. These cells originate in the brain and spinal cord and travel to the muscles, forming connections called neuromuscular junctions. In ALS, the cells withdraw from the muscles, and these connections are left non-functional.

“The goal of my research is to understand some of the changes that occur in ALS. More precisely, in the connections between the cells that control our movements and their respective muscles. By understanding these changes, we hope we can use different therapeutic approaches to slow down disease progression and improve symptoms,” he says.

Popoli’s research looks at drugs that help regulate and maintain the integrity of the neuromuscular junction. He has shown that the use of these drugs in ALS make symptoms progress much slower and maintain neuromuscular junctions for longer, allowing for a 10 per cent increase in life expectancy and better quality of life for patients.

“My work is far from over, but I’m hopeful that with this novel research, we’ll be able to find new treatments for this devastating disease.”

Prize-worthy presentations

Pooyan Moradi, another PhD student in medical neuroscience, and Kaela Trumble, a master’s student in rehabilitation research, were also selected as top finalists by the judging panel.

Moradi earned second place and a $500 prize, presenting on the use of artificial intelligence to detect seizures in animals and how this model can be applied to better predict epilepsy in humans who have suffered head injuries.

Trumble placed third in the competition and won $250 with a presentation covering the differences in how people develop health problems as they age in relation to heart disease.

The remaining eight finalists each earned $100 prizes for their inspiring presentations.

Also receiving the most votes for the People’s Choice Award, biochemistry and molecular biology master’s student Dina Rogers captivated the crowd when describing a biological recycling process by which PET plastic can be repurposed into new materials by protein engineering to combat climate change. The award, valued at $500, was generously sponsored by Estelle Joubert, assistant dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and entrepreneur Paul Doerwald.

Distilling big ideas

This year's 3MT finals opened with a traditional Mi'kma'ki welcome with Elder Ann LaBillois. The event was enthusiastically hosted by CBC reporter and video journalist Brett Ruskin for a sixth time.

Judges for the competition were Dr. Frank Harvey, Dal's provost and vice-president academic, Grace Jefferies-Aldridge, Dal’s vice-president, people and culture, and Kristan Hines, senior vice-president of corporate and public affairs at NATIONAL Public Relations.

Organized by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the event served as an opportunity for members of the Dal community and beyond to learn about the impactful work the university’s graduate students are engaged in.

“For many of us, the 3 Minute Thesis competition is the highlight of the year at Dalhousie,” says Dr. Marty Leonard, dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. “It challenges students to take what could be very technologically or theoretically complex research — or better yet, both — and make it accessible and interesting to anyone.”

Dalhousie President Dr. Kim Brooks invited the crowd to relish the opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary research happening on campus.

“If you have the privilege of spending time in a university, one of the things you get to do often in your academic life is trace an idea back to its origins,” she says. “And almost every time you find a new idea, a unique contribution, and you trace it back to its origins, you find a graduate student.”
