Writing in the campus newspaper, the  Maroon Tiger , King argues that education has both a utilitarian and a moral function. 1  Citing the example of Georgia’s former governor Eugene Talmadge, he asserts that reasoning ability is not enough. He insists that character and moral development are necessary to give the critical intellect humane purposes. King, Sr., later recalled that his son told him, “Talmadge has a Phi Beta Kappa key, can you believe that? What did he use all that precious knowledge for? To accomplish what?” 2

As I engage in the so-called “bull sessions” around and about the school, I too often find that most college men have a misconception of the purpose of education. Most of the “brethren” think that education should equip them with the proper instruments of exploitation so that they can forever trample over the masses. Still others think that education should furnish them with noble ends rather than means to an end.

It seems to me that education has a two-fold function to perform in the life of man and in society: the one is utility and the other is culture. Education must enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the ligitimate goals of his life.

Education must also train one for quick, resolute and effective thinking. To think incisively and to think for one’s self is very difficult. We are prone to let our mental life become invaded by legions of half truths, prejudices, and propaganda. At this point, I often wonder whether or not education is fulfilling its purpose. A great majority of the so-called educated people do not think logically and scientifically. Even the press, the classroom, the platform, and the pulpit in many instances do not give us objective and unbiased truths. To save man from the morass of propaganda, in my opinion, is one of the chief aims of education. Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction.

The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. But education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.

The late Eugene Talmadge, in my opinion, possessed one of the better minds of Georgia, or even America. Moreover, he wore the Phi Beta Kappa key. By all measuring rods, Mr. Talmadge could think critically and intensively; yet he contends that I am an inferior being. Are those the types of men we call educated?

We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate. The broad education will, therefore, transmit to one not only the accumulated knowledge of the race but also the accumulated experience of social living.

If we are not careful, our colleges will produce a group of close-minded, unscientific, illogical propagandists, consumed with immoral acts. Be careful, “brethren!” Be careful, teachers!

1.  In 1925, the  Maroon Tiger  succeeded the  Athenaeum  as the campus literary journal at Morehouse. In the first semester of the 1947–1948 academic year, it won a First Class Honor Rating from the Associated Collegiate Press at the University of Minnesota. The faculty adviser to the  Maroon Tiger  was King’s English professor, Gladstone Lewis Chandler. King’s “The Purpose of Education” was published with a companion piece, “English Majors All?” by a fellow student, William G. Pickens. Among the many prominent black academicians and journalists who served an apprenticeship on the  Maroon Tiger  staff were Lerone Bennett, Jr., editor of  Ebony ; Brailsford R. Brazeal, dean of Morehouse College; S. W. Garlington, city editor of New York’s  Amsterdam News ; Hugh Gloster, president of Morehouse College; Emory O. Jackson, editor of the  Birmingham World ; Robert E. Johnson, editor of  Jet ; King D. Reddick of the  New York Age ; Ira De A. Reid, chair of the Sociology Department at Atlanta University; and C. Speech given by Save the Children International CEO Helle Thorning-Schmidt at the Education World Forum on 23 January 2017

Education is the most empowering force in the world. It creates knowledge, builds confidence, and breaks down barriers to opportunity.

For children, it is their key to open the door to a better life.

However, it is a sad reality of our world today that millions of children will never receive this key.

They are destined to stay locked in cycles of disadvantage and poverty.

I think Malala described this heart-wrenching situation best when she said:

“In some parts of the world, students are going to school every day. It’s their normal life. But in other parts of the world, we are starving for education … its like a precious gift. Its like a diamond”.

This cannot continue.

All children deserve to receive the ‘precious gift’ of education. In fact, we have promised to give it to them. It is time to deliver.

Under the Sustainable Development Goals, the blue print for progress the whole world has agreed, we are committed to give all children an inclusive and quality education by 2030.

To get the 263 million children currently out of school, back in.

To make sure the 130 million children currently reaching Grade 4 without learning basic reading and maths skills, become masters of both.

To stop girls being excluded, or married off.

Right now, one girl under 15 is married every 7 seconds. They should be starting a new year of school, not starting a new life of disadvantage.

I know this sounds a bit bleak. But we have to face up to the fact that we are in the midst of an education crisis and are running well behind on our promise to the world’s children.

I have just returned from the World Economic Forum in Davos where I gave world leaders this same message.

However, instead of acting fast to address this crisis, our efforts are slowing down. Development dollars spent on education have declined in the past decade — from 13 per cent to 10 per cent since 2002.

The challenge is also not getting any easier. Two billion jobs will be lost to automation by 2050. Access to quality education will therefore be even more critical to prepare young people for the challenges of a changing world.

If we continue with our glacial pace of action, up to half of the world’s 1.6 billion children will still be out of school or failing to learn by 2030, and we would need an extra 50 years to reach our global education goals.

Yet, as we face up to this crisis, we should not be tempted to despair.

We can turn things around if we are prepared to step up now.

I am proud to be part of group doing just that, the Education Commission. We are a group of government, business and cultural leaders who have produced a roadmap for how we can live up to the education promise we have made under the global goals.

A vision for how to create a Learning Generation.

It will not be easy to achieve. But, it can be done.

We know this is possible because a quarter of the world’s countries are already on the right path.

This top 25 per cent are already delivering. They are improving their education systems fast and equipping their children with the skills they need for the future.

What we have to do now is focus more effort on the remaining 75 per cent of countries that are not yet hitting the mark.

In these countries, we have to dramatically scale up investment in education systems to improve both the availability of education, but just as importantly, education quality.

To achieve this, the Education Commission report calls for a Financing Compact. The Financing Compact means that countries commit to invest and reform.

In return, the international community offers leadership and education finance, and both are held accountable for their commitment.

To fulfil the compact, countries need to take on four education transformations.

First, performance. This is about putting results front and centre. Successful education systems must invest in what works.

Second, innovation. We must develop new and creative approaches. Education systems must innovate rather than just replicate.

Third, inclusion. We must reach every last child. We will not close the global learning gap unless leaders take steps to include and support those at greatest risk of being out of school. The poor, the discriminated against, girls, and those facing multiple disadvantages.

And fourth, finance. We need to mobilize more money and ensure that we spend it wisely.

Total spending on education must increase steadily from $1.2 to 3 trillion by 2030 across all low- and middle-income countries. The 75 per cent that are falling behind.

This includes mobilising more domestic resources for education. Public spending on education must rise in these countries from 4 per cent to 5.8 per cent.

And by mobilising more support from the international community — governments, financial institutions, business and philanthropists.

International finance needs to increase from today’s estimated $16 billion per year to $89 billion per year by 2030.

These are certainly huge amounts of money.

But we must not forget that by investing now, we will also create huge benefits.

In developing countries, $1 dollar invested in an additional year of schooling gives back $10 back in economic benefits.

What a rate of return!

It gets even better when you think about the role that education can play in empowering girls.

If we close the gender gap by 2030, and education is a big part of this, we are looking at benefits to the global economy of $25 trillion. That is truly a huge number. It makes the upfront investments needed seem small.

And there are other important benefits to children that you cannot put a price on.

Education equals better lives. Access to decent work, improved health and life outcomes, and the dignity that comes from the ability to know and stand up for your human rights.

In 2017, we at the Commission are already taking the first steps to bring our vision of a learning generation into reality.

Two steps we are taking include:

First, advocating for the establishment of a new development bank for education. One that could potentially mobilize $20 billion or more annually by 2030, up from $3.5 billion today.

Second, kick starting a Pioneer Country Initiative, led by former President of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete. Work has already commenced in Uganda and Malawi with other countries joining in soon.

Under this initiative, the Commission will work closely with the leadership of pioneer countries to push education up to the top of their domestic priority pile.

Leaders will undertake needed reforms, and invest more resources in the right places. The commission will then act as a bridge to international financing institutions, to attract even more resources from outside. By working in this way, we can trigger virtuous cycles of reform, investment and results.

It is my hope, that 2017 is the year that we all finally stand up and prioritise education. At the Commission, we are trying to do our part. However, we cannot do it alone. We need government, business and even individual citizens to step up.

The case for education is indisputable, and we have no time to waste. Millions of children and youth around the world cannot wait any longer.

Dr. King was brilliant! Even at such a young age, he possessed the ability to think critically and strongly defend his thoughts. As he stated, “We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate.” We really need to think on this; let it sink into our souls and act accordingly.

Good Morning to one and all present here! Today I am here to deliver a speech about education. It is usually a belief that education is the foundation for all-round development. Life is based on development and that developing and growing is life. If we describe this view into the perspective of education, we can sum up that education is the all-round development of the individual’s personality. Thus, education is nothing but all-round development of the individual’s personality. Education is a process of man-making. Hence, education is necessary for all.

Importance of Education

As per the report of the Kothari Commission, “the destiny of India is being shaped in its classrooms.” Education ingrain civic and social responsibility among everyone. India is a land of diversities. Therefore, in order to bring unity, education is a means for emotional integration. We cannot do without any kind of education. Education is an essential aspect of human development. Education is a means of achieving a world of peace, justice, freedom, and equality for all. Thus, education is extremely necessary for all. No good life is possible without education.

It indorses the intelligence of human beings, develops his skill, and enables him to be industrious. It ensures his progress. Education also channelizes the undeveloped capacities, attitude, interest, urges and needs of the individual into desirable channels. The individual can adjust and modify his environment with the help of education as per his need.

Problems and Prospects

In a democratic country, education is necessary for all its citizens. Unless all the citizens get education, democratic machinery cannot work well. So we may emphasize that the problem of equality of educational opportunities in Indian. This situation is a very formidable one.

Our education system is at cross-roads. The Indian constitution enacted that there should be a universalization of primary education. In the order of the constitution, it was indicated that compulsory education must be for all children up to the age of 14. The universalization of elementary education has been implemented as a national goal. ‘Education for all’ is now an international goal.

The main problems are finances. Rural-urban disparity due to illiteracy. Women’s education, economic conditions of backward communities and non-availability of equipment are some other major problems.

Strategies and efforts at the national and international level

Universal elementary education has run the formulation of the project “education for all”. The provision of article 45 of the Indian constitution is a noble determination for the universalization of elementary education. Big efforts have been made to reach the goal of providing elementary education to every child of the country through, universal enrolment, universal provision, and universal retention.

Our constitution is making arrangements for free and compulsory education with the right of minorities to establish educational institutions. As well as there are education for weaker sections, secular education, women’s education, instruction in the mother-tongue at the primary stage, etc. These constitutional provisions are nothing but our effort to achieve the target of the project “Education for all”.

Thus, in the end, we find that education is a significant factor for achieving success, building characters, and for living a wholesome and happy life. True education always humanizes the person. In this reference, “Education for all” has become an international goal for both developed and developing countries.

Without education, human beings wouldn’t have arrived at the stage they are right now, and it is unlikely that we will be able to continue our missions to space progressively without education. 

And yet the truth remains that many, many people across the world do not have the right or ability to receive an education. Many of these people might be able to do great things if only they had the means to do so.

In such a scenario, it becomes important to spread awareness about education. Delivering speeches is one of the best ways to do so, as through speeches one can make a more personal connection with the people attending & make it more likely that they will actually do something about it.

However, it’s also true that education is a topic that many, many people have spoken about. In such a scenario, you might find yourself wondering what you can do to make your speech stand apart from all the ones that came before.

Education is a topic that people have spoken about time and again. What this means is that if you deliver a speech about education without adding a different point of view to it, then the chances are your audience is going to find your speech bland or boring and not pay attention.

So, find a unique angle for the speech. Draw on your personal experiences and ask yourself: is there anything about this topic that I can see but others can’t?

2. Include Concrete Elements 

Concrete details or elements include things like facts, statistics, etc. 

If you don’t include concrete elements in your speech, then chances are that your speech will become abstract and hard to believe really fast.

3. Use Language & Concepts Familiar To The Audience

Often, speakers have this misconception that the bigger or more difficult words they use, the better or smarter they’re going to sound. This cannot be further from the truth.

While using complicated words or concepts might make you sound smarter, they also increase the chances that you won’t be able to formulate a connection with the audience. 

After all, if they can’t understand what they’re saying, how will they connect with it?

4. Incorporate Storytelling & Props 

Stories are a GREAT way to make your speech more personal and engaging. And props, if used alongside your story, can take it to the next level. 

So, make sure to incorporate appropriate personal stories and props in your speech. Make sure that your prop is relevant to the speech, and not merely an accessory. 

5. Make Them Feel, Not Just Hear 

If you truly want your audience to be impacted by your speech, then you need to make them feel more deeply about it. You need to make them go beyond hearing and actually feel for you and the topic. 

This can be done by sprinkling throughout your speech elements like humor, stories, props, videos, real-life testimonials, interacting with them…

The list goes on. 

What matters is going above and beyond. You want to make your words mean more than their meaning. 

6. Use Humor

Humor is a great way to take any speech to the next level. Like stories, jokes are a great way to form a connection with the audience and make your speech more memorable.

However, one thing to keep in mind here is to make sure that your humor is relevant to the topic at hand. Don’t just add jokes for the sake of adding them: make sure that they relate to your speech in some way.

7. Don’t Have Too Many Points

While it’s important to make sure that your speech covers all aspects that it needs to cover, you don’t have to include too many points in your speech. This will make it difficult for the audience to figure out what, exactly, is the central theme or main message that you want them to take away.

You can have one or two key takeaways and divide those main points into multiple individual points. This will allow for better structure of your speech, whilst also making it easier to view it from multiple angles.

Ways To Begin Your Speech On Education 

1. Open With A Story 

This is a tried and tested way to open your speech. As mentioned before, it’s imperative you incorporate stories into your speech if you wish to make a personal connection with the audience and make them feel for your speech.

2. Make Them Go ‘A-Ha’ 

Another awesome way to open your speech is by surprising your audience. This will awaken them, and snap their attention to where it needs to be: on you. 

This adds doubly to your credit if your speech is on a seemingly monotonous topic like education where the audience enters with certain expectations about the speech already in place. 

There are many ways to do this. Stories with a twist are one. Another would be incorporating a joke. Yet another way would be to pull out a prop. Or you could even say a surprising statement that seems to go against the topic when you first hear it.

For example:  I don’t think education is important. Unless…

3. Common-Ground Open 

A common ground opening is imperative if there is a gap between you and your audience. If, for example, you’re an aged professor from a reputed university and the audience is teenagers from a local high school, then there are going to be gaps in how you and the audience perceive the world. 

You can bridge this gap in a couple of ways. One would be making a personal connection or making them see that you are similar in certain aspects. This can be done by using humor, incorporating stories, or even making a pop culture reference. You can also open with a shared goal or interest. 

For example:  When I was in high school, all I wanted to do was get out of it.

4. Open With A Show Of Hands 

Another great way to open your speech is by asking questions–particularly show of hands questions. 

This works in two ways: asking the question piques your audience’s attention and gets their thoughts rolling. On the other hand, show-of-hands provides them with a chance to move their body, which aids in making them more aware of their surroundings i.e you. 

For example:  How many of you wish you could get out of this classroom right now?

5. Open With An Image Or Prop 

Images tell stories. And stories, as mentioned above, are one of the best ways to open your speech. 

You can open your speech by showing the audience an image of something and then asking them a question about it or presenting a startling fact about it. Alternatively, you could also open your speech by employing a relevant prop. 

For example:  Start off with an image of a refugee in a school.

Sample Speech On Education

Title: The Missing Ramp

On a school field trip in grade 3, I met my long lost twin. Or so I thought, anyway. The boy I met wasn’t actually my twin by blood. But he was my exact replica in every other aspect: from the color of our hair and eyes to the kind of jokes we liked to make and the cartoons we loved to watch and the fact that we both felt a little out of place in the big strange world. We were similar in more aspects than we could count, more than I can remember now. However, we were significantly different in one important aspect: While I was a ten year old, happy-go-lucky kid that hated going to school, he was a ten year old, happy go-lucky kid for whom school was a distant dream. You see, Andrew–the boy I thought was my twin–had a locomotor disability. He had to use a weelchair to be able to move around. However, there was only one school in our little town, and the school had no ramps or elevators, making it impossible for him to navigate by himself the five floors that it comprised. Not only this, but there were no washrooms available for him, either. His mother could not afford to lose her job in town, not with the already soaring cost of his treatement. Her meagre salary meant that a private tutor was out of question. Besides, she thought, what was the point of uprooting her entire life to move to another town or city when–according to her–there was no point in educating her child when he could not do anything with it? And so, despite the fact that he was perfectly capable of learning at par with the rest of us, Andrew never got an education. Imagine that. Imagine being unable to go to school when all the other kids around you are doing so because the school does not have a ramp. It sounds absurd, right? However strange or unreal it may sound, it’s the reality of the lives of many, many children with disabilities. It’s not that they’re unwilling to learn or their parents are unwilling to send them to school. It’s the lack of facilities–many of which the rest of us take for granted–which make it impossible for them to attend school. And even when the facilities are available. Even then, many, many children with disabilites are unable to achieve the education that is their basic right. An estimated one in three out-of-school children have a disability. There are between 93 million and 150 million children with disabilities worldwide. And yet, WHO estimates that in many, many countries across the world, having a disability more than doubles the chances of a child never attending school. While accessibility remains the key factor that inhibits children with disabilities from attending school, there are many, many other factors that come into play. Inflexible teacher training & support is another factor that comes into play. As does inflexible curriculum and poor structure and plan. However, another key factor that prevents children with disabilites from attending school has less to do with the physical elements of education, and more with the mindset and mentality of other people. That is, it has to do with the attitude of children and teachers in school towards children with disabilites. Often, children with disabilites are scorned and made fun of by their peers. And this is not limited to students alone. The teachers, too, might share a callous attitiude and be inflexible in their approach. I had a teacher in my school who refused to change her ‘ alphabetical seating plan’ to allow a deaf girl sit in the first bench so that she could lip-read her instructions. What this means is that many times, the children themseleves might not be willing to go to school from the fear of how their peers and teachers might react to or treat them. While delivering speeches about making education accessible to all or how it is the fundamental right of every person, we tend to make grand statements and all the big steps that we need to–or should–take in order to actually make education more accessible to people. And yet, while making all those grandoise proclamations, we often overlook the little steps that each and every single one of us needs to take. In seeing the ‘big picture’, we ignore the all the little snapshots that go into making it. And yet, it is this little things that make the most difference. A missing ramp–that’s all it took to make a child miss out on his dream of going to school. I don’t think any words sum up my words better than something Annie Campbell said: “We can teach our children to flap their wings, but conditions have to be just right for them to fly.” Our children are ready to take the leap and fly. Now it is upon us to determine what the sky will be like: full or rain or brimming with sunshine.

What is the Power of Education? 

Access to a quality education is one of the Sustainable Development Goals put forth by the United Nations as a key factor in escaping poverty and ensuring socioeconomic mobility . 

The pandemic only increased the barriers to receiving basic education, especially for marginalized people without access to technology. Online platforms are used by 83% of countries to continue the learning process, but this only reaches approximately a quarter of schoolchildren globally. 

YeSeul’s experience in recognizing the power of education came at a young age, as she described in the podcast episode. 

“I’m a first-generation Korean American, who witnessed firsthand the opportunities that education can provide for a single person. My parents both had to drop out of college, even though they did really well in high school. And in the 80s, that was fine. Coming from this background, YeSeul’s career and passion kept circling back to inspiring others and harnessing education’s benefits for students from any background. 

What is the Importance of Education? 

The goal of true education is to provide knowledge that allows learners to dissect systems, develop opinions, and even strengthen character . Education’s purpose isn’t only to give children the necessary knowledge to pass tests, it helps develop critical thinking skills that help them interpret the latest news, make career moves, and become a lifelong student. An education helps lay the groundwork needed to feel confident in our abilities and helps us find our passions in life. It also teaches us to stay committed and gives us the ability to problem-solve. 

Gaining knowledge doesn’t only happen in classrooms; it extends far beyond our graduation days. In the workplace, in social circles, and while pursuing personal interests, we all have the opportunity to glean new knowledge that gives our life purpose. 

What are the Benefits of Education? 

Now, we’ll look at some of the global benefits of education and focus on the ways that educating a child can not only prepare them for university but also for a happy and fulfilling life. 

Reducing Inequality

Systems of oppression exist in many learning institutions for many students. Black students are more likely to be heavily disciplined and therefore spend less time in the classroom. They’re also less likely to have access to college readiness courses, and when they are out in those courses, they experience a severe lack of representation.

Young girls are less likely to receive adequate education, with only 39% of rural-living girls attending school globally. Women make up more than two thirds of the 796 million illiterate people in the world, despite each additional year of primary school increasing their eventual wages by 10–20%. 

Education, regardless of class, race, or gender, is essential to improving lives. Education is also our most powerful weapon against inequality in society. This is why investing in education around the globe is imperative. 

Improving the Economy

Knowledge pays! Skilled and educated workers make more money, which drives the economy. A recent study showed that increased math skills correlate to a salary increase of $21,000 per year . Not only does this increase generational wealth but it also benefits a country’s global domestic product (GDP) and spikes the entire economy, which is crucial as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Plus, having higher education gives people the ability to secure stable careers, which means they’re better able to provide their future children with those same learning opportunities. 

Boosting Health 

Education also has the power to increase our health. Studies have proven that educated people and their children are less likely to be obese and more likely to live healthy, active lifestyles. One particular study posited that health is actively deteriorating among less educated populations, which poses a great risk to society. 

Access to higher salaries also enables people to purchase healthy foods , spend time cooking meals, and exercising. 

The Future of Education 

Emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic is undoubtedly an ideal time for children and teachers alike to ponder the future of education . But as we reconvene for in-person classes, graduations, and events, it’s important to have a technological component embedded within modern education. There was explosive growth during the pandemic for these tools out of necessity, but H-FARM, where YeSeul works, is going one step further by implementing a virtual reality classroom, giving students the ability to safely convene for learning. 

YeSeul outlined her excitement: “I’m just really looking forward to the launch of our virtual reality school that I think can be a game-changer in education to increase the accessibility of high-quality education, teaching, and more, so we can build a community by using the strength of the Internet and social networks.”

Education is the only weapon that can bring peaceful and sustainable development. Every personal, professional social, and environmental issue can be solved with an educated mind. 

Every society requires educated people for overall development. A society that has more education and civilized people will flourish and sustain better than those who lack education. That is why our government and educational institutions are promoting education.

In earlier times, education was given little importance, as most people were either engaged in agricultural or different manual labor jobs. With the advancement of science and technology, different sectors, like secondary, tertiary, quaternary, and quinary emerged. 

Education is the key that unlocks doors of opportunity, enabling individuals to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society. At a personal level, education allows us to understand the world around us. It empowers us to dream big, set goals, and work towards achieving them.

So. What is education? First of all, Education is not only related to books. schools, colleges & institutions. According to Wikipedia “ Education  is the process of the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, morals, beliefs, and habits”. Hence the one who is open to learning is a student. And he who learns, he achieves.

Education is a basic right for all humans on the planet. Uneducated people in society are shameful to all of us. The government should ensure education for each and all in the country.

Unfortunately, today we see that everything is messed up. The planet rapidly is becoming a hell to live on. It directly refers to that education is not performing well . To make education perform to its highest efficiency, we need to adopt the concept of “ Each one Teach one “.

Education is a fundamental right of each individual on earth. To reject this fact is wrong. Illiterate youth is the most critical thing for Humankind. Education helps society to get rid of unreasonable beliefs, wrong rituals, and social issues.

Educated people make an educated society and educated societies make an educated nation. Only an educated nation can take the world to new heights of possibilities. The importance of education is completely grasped that’s why education as a national policy is always given the first priority.

An educated society has a powerful bonding among its individuals. Because, people from all sections, castes and creeds gather to obtain knowledge. Thus, education is the initial thing that brings the younger ones together and develops an unusual bonding between them. This means there will be no unreasonable clashes among people.

Technologies and advancements in each field made our life so smooth and comfortable. All this was only possible because of education. With the help of education, We have evolved various methods to provide the world with a better life.

Education provides you with knowledge and facts. It expands your thought process and enables a man to interpret everything by himself instead of gathering notions. One can quickly make decisions about his life using his own intelligence. It also helps you to live a stable life and makes you mentally healthy.

Did you ever storm your mind on how education can change the world? Let me present my own opinions. First of all, Education eliminates inequality in society making everyone equal. This will eradicate unreasonable clashes among people.

Second, It provides you with the ability to read and write. So, you can acquire knowledge from books whenever you want & whatever you want. It means you are open to each field’s knowledge all the time.

Third, It gives you a sense of communication that refines one’s speech. Number four, It increases the chances of getting a high-paying job making you employed and achieving a secure life. Number five, education gives you the sense to understand the value of discipline, time and ethnicity. It gives the capability to make a balance in life.

I presented some effects of education on an individual but I also have a list of how education can impact societies. Do correct me in between if I am wrong.

Now it is a turn to talk at a level of a country means how a country is impacted by education. A solid educational system acts for the good of the country. A country is largely judged by its education system and economy.

Any nation is developing day by day just because of its education and technology. Educated people know the difference between a genuine and a corrupt leader for their country.

Educated people understand why to vote for a party to make a positive resolution to the country’s growth. Due to the lack of education, people are left unemployed revealing the cheap level of the economic status of a country. The pathetic situation of a country prevents its growth and improvement. Thus, education is fundamental to increasing economic growth and enhancing income.

The entire process of environmental pollution is becoming a vicious cycle. The urgent need of the hour is to protect environment. THE IMPORTANCE OF FIRST AID

ILLITERACY IN INDIA

Respected members of the faculty and dear friends. It is indeed shocking that even after more than five decades of independence, we have failed to spread the fruit of literacy among the masses. It is most unfortunate that even today almost half the population of India is illiterate. It is disheartening to note that in the last thirty years the literate population has risen by a mere three thousand lakhs and in the last fifty years the literacy rate has gone up by 38 per cent. Since the population of the country is increasing fast, we have to take immediate and urgent steps to spread the fruits of literacy among the masses. The lamp of knowledge should be taken to the farthest nook and comer of the far flung villages as well as the nearby slums. Let us not lose our patience while engaged in the noble task of spreading literacy. Let us adopt literacy as a mission and as our obligation towards society and the nation. The students of schools can play a very effective and constructive role in educating the illiterates. “Each one teach one’ should not remain a mere slogan. It should be translated into reality. The young students should come forward and accept it as a challenge. I therefore call upon each one of you to take a solemn pledge to educate at least one illiterate per year. Samples of drinking water drawn from the municipal limits of the district were found to be contaminated. The district civil surgeon admitted that the bacteria in water might be the source of various diseases including diarrhoea, cholera, hepatitis and typhoid. WATER-BORNE DISEASES—A THREAT

It is a total failure of the Water-Board to provide clean, safe water to the people, a basic necessity. The report categorically says that this water is unfit for human consumption. What are we going to do about this? Are we going to get together and fight or let water-borne diseases like cholera, hepatitis and typhoid spread? Contaminated water can cause these deadly diseases which can cause large scale deaths, if not treated immediately. These water samples must be shown to the Municipal Commissioner and an explanation demanded. On the one hand, we celebrate World Health Day, on the other hand, the basic commodity-water-is impure, I’m sure the concerned authorities will look into the matter and ensure clean and safe drinking water for the public. The noise pollution created by bursting of crackers may cause deafness as well. We may enjoy the bright light and the sound of explosion for a few seconds, but we ignore the permanent damage caused by bursting of crackers. We ourselves inhale the extremely harmful particles as we ignite the crackers. Hence it becomes the duty of each one of us to keep our environment clean and refrain from bursting crackers. POLLUTION BY PLASTIC BAGS

Respected Principal, teachers and dear friends! Good morning to you all! While going through the morning newspaper today, I came across two photo advertisements. These highlight the major problem created by the steady use of harmful polybags made of recycled plastic. The government agencies as well as voluntary organizations have made a number of efforts to propagate the harmful effects of plastic bags. However, it seems that habit die hard. Most of us still prefer to ignore the gravity of using plastic bags. Advertisements, it is said, are far more effective than the written speech. One of the advertisements reads “Kill the plastic bag before it kills your future.” It strikes the nail on the head. It clearly indicates the extreme harmfulness of these plastic bags. Let me elaborate the point further. The plastic bags are made of harmful and toxic chemicals that contaminate the environment. The things that we keep inside them become unhealthy. A single plastic bag is enough to choke the whole drainage system. If these bags are discarded carelessly, some animal may eat them. These get stuck in their bodies. A little effort and awareness on our part now can save us from a lot of future problems. Let us start using cloth or gunny bags and completely boycott the use of plastic bags. Once we revert to the old cloth/gunny bags we can convince the shopkeepers not to use plastic bags. This step will enable us to keep our environment clean, green and healthy. Thank you.

VANA MAHOTSAVA DAY

Respected teachers and dear friends! It is good that our school is celebrating the Vana Mahotsava Day. It is only recently that man has realized the importance of afforestation and growing more trees. In these days of ever increasing pollution, trees are the best friends of human beings. The importance of planting more and more tree lies in the fact that the number of trees preserved is quite low as compared to the number of trees planted. Some of the trees wither away due to lack of proper nourishment and care and some are cut down. Two random examples are sufficient to prove the point. The number of trees planted in 2003 was 4000. Of these more than 1000 dried (withered) of the old trees about 2500 were cut. Thus the loss of trees was just 500 less than the plantation that year. However, due to preservation of the old trees the number of preserved trees stood around 1500. Let us consider another example. The highest number of trees 8000, were planted in the year 2007. But in the same year 3000 trees withered and 5000 were cut. Only 4000 trees survived. These figures clearly indicate that the loss of trees due to cutting or withering is almost equal to fresh plantation. This is not a healthy sign. Hence our endeavour should be not only to plant more and more trees every year, but also to preserve them in greater number. Proper care and nourishment is as necessary for trees as for children. Let us look after these tender saplings as we look after our young brothers and sister and guard them from every danger—natural or man-made. I am confident that the willing co-operation of all my young friends will certainly make this programme highly successful. Thank you.

NATIONAL LITERACY DAY

Respected teachers and dear friends! The population of our country is increasing at a tremendous speed and along with it the number of illiterates, especially in the rural areas, is shooting up. This tendency is a cause of concern for all the enlightened citizens who are busy in developmental activities or welfare programmes. Knowledge or education makes a person civilized, cultured and self-dependent. Education is a medium to transmit knowledge from one person to another over time and space. Today the world is on the threshold of a revolution. National boundaries are breaking up and the nations of the world are coming closer. The world is becoming well-knit. The rich and developed countries are making rapid advances due to their advanced science and technology. The poor and undeveloped countries are lagging behind in this race of progress simply because their people are illiterates and uneducated. In order to convey one’s thoughts and feelings and to understand others, education is essential. Literacy is the first step in this direction. Poverty and lack of opportunity have hindered majority of poor persons from attaining formal education. The percentage of illiterates is far higher than that of matriculates or graduates. Concerted efforts have been made during the last twenty-five years to take the lamp of knowledge to every nook and comer under the National Literacy mission. School teachers, students, social workers and voluntary agencies have come forward to lend a helping hand in this noble mission. The Government of India has launched Adult Education Programmes. With the constant efforts of dedicated workers the pace of literacy has picked up. Students have adoped the slogan ‘Each one, teach one’ in its real meaning. “

HIKE IN PRICES OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS

Respected Chairperson and dear friends! The cartoon given above reveals the cartoonist’s sense of humour at the recent hike in the prices of petroleum products. These prices are a gift of the new government to the already over-burdened common man. Though the price-rise varies from ₹ 2 per litre in case of petrol to ₹ 1.50 per litre of diesel, the consumers are adversely affected both directly as well as indirectly. The rise in the prices of diesel will lead to a hike in the bus fares and freight of goods. Everyday consumable articles will become costlier. The hike in LPG prices is enough to raise the ire of the harassed housewife who doesn’t know how to balance her meagre budget against this onslaught. In fact, the effects of price-hike will percolate to all sections of society—commuters, transporters, farmers, traders, consumers, etc. Increase in cost of tariff will make goods dearer and people will face the shortage of essential items or they will have to shell out more. This will indirectly boost hoarding and black-marketing. Corruption and black money will increase and the means of the common man will shrink. The government must reconsider this hike and roll back the increase on LPG and diesel. No one will protest if more tax is levied on luxury items such as big cars, air conditioners, super computers, air-travel, etc. Frequent rise in prices is not good governance. Thank you.

INCREASE IN VIOLENCE AND SOCIAL UNREST

Respected Principal, teachers and students! During the first decade of the millennium a disturbing trend was noticed in the society. The peace loving citizens of locality were rocked by a spurt in cases of violence and social unrest. A close scrutiny of the ‘Violence’ graph reveals a hundred per cent increase during the year 2003-2004. The upward swing went on mounting higher steadily during the next year and showed no sign of abatement. It stuck to a steady level during 2006 as well. Perhaps it was due to some strict measures adopted by the law enforcing agencies. It might also be the proverbial lull before the storm as the violence graph touched the peak in 2007 and maintained the same level during 2008. Violence against women and misbehaviour with them are manifestations of sexstarved male chauvinism to assert their Supermacy and dominance. The elimination of potential rivals during elections is the bane of politics. Apart from these murders or those committed by extremists to cause panic or by hardened criminals for extortions at the behest of their masters. The net result is the same heinous extermination of a particular individual/ group or section of society. It is high time urgent steps were undertaken by the state as well as society to curb anti-social elements as well as propagators of violence. Deterrent punishment and speedy disposal of cases can be an effective curb on the nefarious designs of these offenders against state and society. Thank you.

A concession has been offered on the Rwanda bill in the House of Lords to prevent a peer from pushing his amendment to a vote.

He said it meant once the review has concluded the government "will not remove to Rwanda those who have received a positive eligibility decision as a result of this review where they are already in the UK as of today".

He added: "The government recognises the commitment and responsibility that comes with combat veterans, whether our own or those who have shared courage by serving alongside us. And we will not let them down."

Lord Browne has now spoken about the concession and said he hasn't decided if it is enough to prevent him from pushing the amendment.

He said: "Should I trust them at their word? They left these people behind, they messed up any subsequent evacuation plan.

"Why should I trust them now? I will tell you my Lords why I am minded to consider doing so, though I haven’t yet made up my mind, because we my Lords are now part of a grand coalition… and we will not be silent until today's promise is honoured by this government or the next one."

He added: "So while I may not press my motion this evening, I look forward to the day when a Labour government repeals this immoral and unlawful excuse for legislation in total."

Amnesty International UK has warned airline companies they should be "mindful" members of the public may take an "extremely negative view" if they are involved in Rishi Sunak's scheme to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

The organisation's chief executive Sacha Deshmukh said: "Though the government seems not to care about trashing the UK's reputation as a law-abiding country, airline companies ought to view this entirely misguided enterprise very differently.

"Any involvement by commercial airlines in Rwanda refugee flights may open them up to legal challenge on the grounds of complicity in the government's human rights violations."

Earlier, we reported that UN experts had warned airlines involved in the scheme could be held responsible for any violations of international human rights rules (see 18.20 post).

On Sophy's panel tonight are Conservative MP Tim Loughton and Daisy Cooper, deputy leader for the Liberal Democrats.

Ms Cooper says the Liberal Democrats have opposed the bill at every stage, adding the government should instead reintroduce safe and legal routes, scrap the "unworkable, expensive" scheme and spend the money on getting the asylum backlog down.

But Mr Loughton says: "This bill needs to go through."

There is "absolutely nothing" new to debate with the amendments this evening, he says, adding: "Now, let the legislation go through. We need the Rwanda scheme to start."

Tory MP Danny Kruger is the first guest on the show.

He tells Sophy Ridge he is sure the government will win tonight and the Rwanda bill will be passed.

"I have got some anxieties about it but the overall principle is the right one and I'm pleased that the government is pushing back against the Lords," he says.

He is sure the bill will pass, he says, adding there is "a bigger story here which is about our membership of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg".

The court "doesn't respect the UK parliament as the sovereign power in our country", he says.

It is "incompatible with our democracy".

Mr Kruger adds: "I'm hopeful the Rwanda policy will work, if it doesn't that makes it really obvious we need to leave the European Court, which might well be the battleground for the next election. So I think there's a big story here about who rules Britain."

Tonight, we think, is going to be the night when finally Rishi Sunak gets his Rwanda legislation through parliament.

I know it feels a bit like we've been marched up this hill before, and trust me, I don't want to play the role of the Grand Old Duke of York again, but all the signs are that by the end of the day, or at least by the early hours of the morning, the Rwanda bill will be law.

Voting started in the afternoon. It's going to go on until the evening, as the Lords add amendments that are then thrown out by the Commons. Ping pong, in the parliamentary jargon.

But no matter how late it gets, Rishi Sunak has vowed to push his plan through parliament tonight, and we'll of course be bringing you every twist and turn.

But then, what happens next?

Well, according to the prime minister, flights to Rwanda will start taking off in 10 to 12 weeks.

If you're sceptical about whether that will happen, and you feel the Grand old Duke of York has taken you up this hill before, I get it.

But that's what the prime minister says. Apparently, commercial flights have already been organised and officials are on standby.

Here's the thing though, even if that does happen, and flights taking migrants to Rwanda start in July, that's not going to be the end of the prime minister's problems.

Right now, the record numbers of small boats arriving in the UK can be dismissed by the government saying, "Look, we wanted to get Rwanda through, but that's been blocked by those pesky Labour peers, or the courts."

But what happens if migrants are leaving on flights to Rwanda and yet the small boats keep arriving on Britain's beaches? Who's to blame then?

On the show tonight, we'll be discussing the politics and the policy on a busy evening here in parliament.

The government has won two votes on the Rwanda bill this evening, after MPs voted to reject two amendments made in the House of Lords last week.

The bill will now be sent back to the Lords, where some peers may attempt to insist on their amendments again.

It will then go back to the Commons with amendments where it will be voted on again.

Last week peers amended the bill to include an exemption for Afghan and other nationals who had assisted British troops overseas and a provision meaning Rwanda could not be treated as a safe country unless deemed so by an independent monitoring body.

This morning Rishi Sunak declared "enough is enough" and said MPs and peers will sit through the night if necessary to get the bill passed.

Airlines involved in Rishi Sunak's Rwanda scheme could be held responsible for any violations of international human rights rules, UN experts have warned.

Siobhan Mullally, Gehad Madi and Alice Jill Edwards, the special rapporteurs on human trafficking, migrants' human rights and torture, warned airlines and regulators could be "complicit" in breaching the rules by facilitating removals to Rwanda.

"Even if the UK-Rwanda agreement and the Safety of Rwanda Bill are approved, airlines and aviation regulators could be complicit in violating internationally protected human rights and court orders by facilitating removals to Rwanda," they said.

The experts added: "If airlines and aviation authorities give effect to state decisions that violate human rights, they must be held responsible for their conduct.

"As the UN guiding principles on business and human rights underline, aviation regulators, international organisations and business actors are required to respect human rights."

The UN experts have expressed their concerns to the UK government, as well as national, European and international aviation regulators.

MPs have rejected a second amendment to the Rwanda bill introduced by the House of Lords last week, which would have included an exemption for Afghan nationals and others who had assisted British troops overseas.

Some 305 MPs voted to scrap the amendment and 234 voted to keep it.

The bill will now be sent back to the House of Lords.
