The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze research productivity, thrust area, new trends and most productive guide between Kumaun University and Delhi University during 2000-2010. Bibliographical survey method is adopted for data collection based on certain access points or aspects which are determined with the help of guide. Bibliographical description of each thesis is according to standard format of AACR-II(R) and for classification DDC-22nd edition is used as tool and key words (subjects) considered by SLSH. In both universities, the distribution pattern of doctoral theses is uneven, from 2000 to 2004 it shows increasing trends and then after decreasing trends. Hence universities should encourage and motivate students for doing Ph.D. Male researchers are slightly higher than female in KU, but in DU female ratio is higher. This revealed that DU gives preference and encouragement to female in comparison to KU. The medium of Doctoral dissertation is English and Hindi both in KU, but in DU it is English only. The reason behind that KU is a state university and most researchers are more comfortable with Hindi rather than English. However, guide and researcher ratio is almost one ratio two in both the universities.
The present study is based on 234 citations, appended to the 47 PhD theses of Socialogy submitted to Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore for the award of doctoral degree during the period 2000-2006. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the subject areas of research in sociology. To identify the different style manual used in the theses. To know language wise, country wise and age wise distribution of the citations. To study the authorship pattern and forms of literature cited. Identified the frequently cited journals. Study finally conclude that such studies will be helpful to researcher's information needs and serve as feedback to the librarians in the acquisition of useful books and subscribe core journals within the budget.

This article is based on a bibliometric study of contribution to Indian Sociology, period from 2000 to 2009. It includes bibliometric analysis of 5683 citations appended to 139 articles published in the same journal. However, no citations were appended to 3 articles published in the maiden volume 1 in 1957. The study reveals the distribution of contributions, authorship pattern, citation analysis, geographical distribution of contributions, number of pages used in each volume and gender distribution. A comparative study of articles published in ten volumes as well as in the maiden volume has been made. Results indicate that there is not equal distribution pertaining to number of contributions in each volume due to publisher restrictions. Highest numbers of papers have been written by single authors and male authors have a slight edge over female contributors. The most cited documents are articles or chapters from books. The foreign authors’ contributions are greater than India. Among the Indian states New Delhi is the top contributor whereas among Indian universities or institutes University of Delhi is at the top. At the international level UK is the top contributor followed by USA. The growth and popularity of this journal is found to be showing an upward trend.
The purpose of this study is to analyze research productivity, thrust area, new trends and most productive guide in Kumaun University during 2000-2010. Bibliographical survey method is adopted for data collection based on certain access points or aspects which are determined with the help of the guide. Bibliographical description of each thesis is according to standard format of AACR-II(R) and for classification DDC-22nd edition is used as tool and key words (subjects) considered by SLSH. The researcher and guide ratio is 1.5:1. It indicates that university research level is very low. The other reason behind that is after completion of Maters degree, young generations are not much interested in doing Ph.D. Hence, Kumaun University should encourage and motivate students for doing Ph.D. and research work. 22.41% and 17.24% of theses were awarded during 2002-03 and 2009-10 respectively. The major research areas that emerge are Political Process, Politics & Governments, and Public Administration. The study also reveals that male researchers are more interested in doing research on Political Process (20.69%), while 10.34% female are interested in Politics and Government. The most important fact that occurs in the investigation is that the male scholar’s percentage (62.07%) is higher than female researchers. In addition the medium of Doctoral dissertation is both Hindi and English.

Purpose-It is unfortunate yet true that in India, research starts and ends with a Ph.D. The steady decline in the quality of doctoral research has been an articulated concern among Indian academics at a time when research and innovation should be a priority. One of the feasible ways of resurrecting or reconstructing Indian research is to open up to examine contemporary international trends. Against this backdrop, the study aimed to make a comparative analysis of doctoral research in education in top-ranking international and top-ranking Indian universities. Design/methodology/approach-Adopting a comparative education methodology, this paper examines 100 doctoral dissertations from the top 10 international universities as per Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking and 100 doctoral theses from the top 10 Indian universities following National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) submitted in the past decade. Four significant issues were investigated during the comparisontopic, procedure, presentation, and disseminationbased on the premeditated Research Quality Relevance Metrics (RQRM) designed by the authors for quality improvement of research. Findings-Findings revealed stark differences between two trends in all four domains. The top international universities focus on the contemporariness scattered across diverse issues while Indian studies continue to engage on a few archetypal conventional issues with dreary reiterations. The newness of thought is rare in Indian research, while the interdisciplinary mixing of methods and practices had been the hallmark of its international comportment. Practice orientation has been a unique research attribute found in the top 10 international universities. The methods applied have attempted to reduce the age-old gap between educational research and practice. Methodological innovativeness, structural orientation, readability, and dissemination of research were also exemplary in those international theses, whereas Indian theses are still reeling under orthodox surveys with hesitant reporting. Research limitations/implications-This study put an exclusive mirror in front of Indian doctoral research on its current state in respect of international standards. At the same time, it upholds a framework to promote research quality and impact. Dimensions of research quality relevance matrices and recommendations for effective doctoral research are two vibrant contributions to the intelligentsia in general for bringing Indian research out of its cocoon to make it internationally comparable. Originality/value-It reports a study conducted by the researchers and the write-up is based on the empirical findings only.
Sujata Patel
‘Sociology of/in India’ is arguably a vexed issue expressed in an overused phrase unless it is cast in a new light. The enormity of volumes, of debates and writings, adds to the phrase an uncanny posterity and illusive exoticness despite the fact that there are only eight (nine on stretch) decades in the backdrop. The neophytes of the discipline learn of it with a sense of disciplinary pride and scholars speak of it with due prejudices. It hinges upon the key term that is self-reflexivity innate to the discipline that invites every old and new scholar to ‘sociologise sociology’ by (re)visiting the debates and historical-intellectual trajectory of the discipline. The selfreflexivity of a discipline is indeed a point of celebration. Arguably, a little too self-reflexive a discipline as sociology is also likely to degenerate into self-fulfilling prophecies. The blowing of trumpet, to count the brownie points pertaining to the ‘glorious past of the discipline’, or the mourning of the end of the glory in the time of the banality in the institutional and disciplinary practices, both refuse to reckon with the spontaneous growth in the nature and scope of sociology. On the other hand, yet another attempt at ‘sociologising sociology’ could also aid in putting the contemporary, with reference to the bygone, in the right perspective.

Important Notes:
As a student of sociology dissertation looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing sociology dissertation theories – i.e., to add value and interest in your research topic.
The sociology dissertation field is vast and interrelated to so many other academic disciplines like human rights , philosophy , religion & theology and more. That is why it is imperative to create a sociology dissertation topic that is articular, sound, and solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field.
We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic based on your fundamental research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your case wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, there is a possibility that the study is not viable.
This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the very initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.
Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best sociology dissertation topics that fulfill your requirement of writing a research paper and add to the body of knowledge.
Therefore, it is recommended that when finalising your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.
Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample sociology dissertation topics to get an idea for your dissertation.
