Fall 2023 or Later

These guidelines apply to students who started the PhD program in the Fall 2023 or Later. For earlier guidelines, please see Fall 2015 to Spring 2023 guidelines .

1. Introduction

The PhD degree at the USC Computer Science department prepares students for a career in research. The goal of the program is to nurture talented minds via research and formal coursework, to produce future thought leaders in computer science. The program accepts students who have completed a four-year Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; a Master’s degree is not a requirement for entry. Once admitted to the program, a student must complete a set of requirements to graduate with the PhD degree. These requirements are described next.

2. Unit Requirements

A student is required to complete a total of at least 60 units, at least 40 of which must be at the 500 level or above (beyond the bachelor’s degree and including the required courses as listed in the requirements below). A student must maintain a 3.0 GPA to remain in good academic standing.

3. Course Requirement

Mandatory courses: Each student is required to complete CSCI 670 (4 units), and two semesters of CSCI 697 (1 unit each, 2 maximum). In addition, students are required to pass two semesters of CSCI 698 (1-2 units each, no maximum) as part of a teaching requirement. CSCI 698 is coursework related to a teaching requirement and is described in Section 6.

In addition to the mandatory courses, each student must complete five (5) CSCI courses at the 500 level and above, each of 4 units. No more than two (2) of these courses (8 units total) may be at the 500 level; the remaining must be CSCI courses at the 600 level. Directed Research units or thesis credits do not satisfy this requirement.

Students are strongly advised to take at least one of their elective courses in an area of Computer Science that is different from their proposed area of research. The PhD advisor is expected to provide guidance on this matter to the student. The CSCI 670 course requirement may be waived only by taking the midterm and final exams with the ongoing class (no homeworks or quizzes), and achieving satisfactory scores.

CSCI 697 and CSCI 698 may not be waived.

4. Biannual Review

Every Fall and every Spring semesters, the faculty will review each PhD student in the program. This is a rigorous review. Each student must submit a current CV and a list of publications and/or achievements. Each student’s faculty advisor will also submit a written statement assessing the student’s research and progress. The review, based on these inputs, will result in an evaluation of:

• “At or exceeds expectations”,
• “Mostly at expectations and improvements needed” (with a specific list of improvements for each student), or
• “Below expectations” (with a specific list of actions that must be taken).

After the first two semesters, students who do not have a faculty advisor will automatically receive a “Below expectations” evaluation.

Students must earn a “At or exceeds expectations” or “Mostly at expectations and improvements needed” evaluation on the most recent review before they will be allowed to take the Qualifying Examination or Dissertation Defense.

For each student who earns a “Below expectations” review, the student’s faculty advisor (if any) and the Associate Chair for PhD Affairs will develop a remediation plan to be completed within 12 months.

Two consecutive “Below expectations” reviews or failure to achieve the remediation plan may be used as grounds for removing a student from the PhD program.

5. Seminar and Thesis Proposal Attendance Requirement

Each PhD student must attend four (4) Department seminars and/or PhD Thesis Proposals each semester.

6. Teaching Requirement

All PhD students must pass CSCI 698: Teaching Practicum in two or more semesters before they can graduate with a PhD. Enrollment in CSCI 698 requires a PhD student to concurrently serve as a TA for a Computer Science or Data Science class. Every student must TA for two semesters to fulfill the teaching requirement. Every student must TA at least one undergraduate class, unless by exceptional approval by the Associate Chair for PhD Affairs.

7. Qualifying Examination

All doctoral students must pass a Qualifying Examination in Computer Science. Before passing the Qualifying Examination, students must have completed all their course requirements.

The Qualifying Examination is administered by a guidance committee consisting of the dissertation advisor and four (4) other faculty members. The student’s dissertation advisor will act as the chair of the guidance committee. The committee must include at least three (3) faculty members who have an appointment in Computer Science, and at least one committee member must be tenured in the Computer Science Department. The committee must also include one tenured/tenure track USC faculty member from another department whose primary appointment is not in Computer Science. All guidance committees must be approved by the Associate Chair for PhD Affairs, the Dean’s office, and the Graduate School. The guidance committee may include faculty from other universities, in addition to the five members from USC.

The Qualifying Examination has two parts: Written and Oral. A student must have an “At or exceeds expectations” or “Mostly at expectations and improvements needed” result from the most recent Biannual Review and at least a 3.0 GPA in order to attempt the Qualifying Examination.

Students may take the Written portion of the Qualifying Examination prior to completing their course requirements. The Written portion of the Qualifying Examination should be taken during the student’s 4th semester in the PhD program. The Written portion is in the form of a paper. Students must work with their Qualifying Examination committee to determine the topic and scope of the paper. The criteria for the paper written in fulfillment of the Written portion of the Qualifying Examination are as follows:

• Minimum 15 pages in the ACM Computer Science Style.
• Writing style must be of publishable quality, as determined by the guidance committee.
• Must include at least 30 scholarly references.

The student will pass the Written part of the Qualifying Examination with their committee’s consensus. If a student does not pass the Written portion of the Qualifying Examination, they may retake it one additional time. The student must retake the Written portion of the Qualifying Examination within at least six (6) and at most 12 months of the initial attempt.

The Oral portion of the Qualifying Examination must be taken by the end of a student’s 3rd year. It is closed to the public. The Oral portion of the Qualifying Examination will assess a student’s ability to provide a 30-minute presentation on the topic covered in the Written portion and to show adequate mastery of that topic, reflected both in the quality of the presentation and the ability to answer questions from the committee. The student will not be allowed to take the Oral portion of the Qualifying Examination without having passed the Written portion. If a student does not pass the Oral portion of the Qualifying Examination, they may retake it one additional time. The student must retake the Oral portion of the Qualifying Examination within at least six (6) and at most 12 months of the initial attempt. Postponement of any part of the Qualifying Examination will be treated on a case-by-case basis by the Associate Chair for the PhD Program.

8. Thesis Proposal

The thesis proposal presents a summary of planned future research to be carried out until graduation, contextualized by work already completed. Like for the Qualifying exam, the Thesis Proposal consists of two parts: a written part, in the same format as the written portion of the Qualifying Exam, and an oral presentation. The written part must be submitted to the student’s faculty committee at least two weeks before the scheduled oral presentation. The thesis proposal committee is administered by a guidance committee consisting of the dissertation advisor and four (4) other faculty members. The student’s dissertation advisor will act as the chair of the guidance committee. The committee must include at least three (3) faculty members who have an appointment in Computer Science, and at least one committee member must be tenured in the Computer Science Department. The committee must also include one tenured/tenure track USC faculty member from another department whose primary appointment is not in Computer Science.

The oral part of the Thesis Proposal is a presentation open to the public. The presentation must be announced at least one week in advance. The announcement must include the presentation title and abstract, the venue, date and time, as well as the names of the guidance committee members. The presentation is expected to be 45 minutes long at a minimum, with time for questions at the end. All current PhD students are encouraged to attend and participate in the public questions-and-answers session. A portion of the questions-and-answers session may be closed at the discretion of the student’s guidance committee.

The Thesis Proposal must be made by the end of a student’s 5th year in the program, although it is strongly recommended that students do so by the end of their 4th year. Only students who have passed the Qualifying examination (both Written and Oral), may schedule a Thesis Proposal presentation. The guidance committee will assess the thesis proposal for novelty, substance, and feasibility, and decide whether to approve the proposal. If a student’s Thesis Proposal is not approved, the student may make one additional proposal. The student must make the additional Thesis Proposal within at most six (6) months of the first attempt.

9. Dissertation and Defense

A dissertation involving original research completes the requirements for a PhD degree. A Defense of the dissertation must be held as a public oral examination. The Defense must be announced at least one week in advance. To schedule the Defense, the student must have passed the Thesis Proposal. The Defense announcement must include the dissertation title and abstract, the venue, date and time for the examination, as well as the names of the dissertation Defense committee members.

The student must provide the complete written dissertation to the committee at least five (5) business days before the scheduled defense.

The dissertation defense committee must have at least three (3) members, of which at least two must have an appointment in Computer Science. The student’s dissertation advisor will chair the committee. At least one committee member must be tenured in the Computer Science Department. The committee must also include one tenured (or tenure-track) USC faculty member from another department whose primary appointment is not in Computer Science.

10. Time Limits

A student must pass the Qualifying Examination within four years of being admitted to the PhD program. The dissertation Defense must be completed within seven years of being admitted to the PhD program (six if the student arrives with a relevant Master’s degree).

After seven years in the PhD program, the student may not be eligible for any Teaching Assistantship funding from the Computer Science department. An extension to either time limit (Qualifying Exam and Defense) requires approval of two-thirds of the Computer Science faculty. In no case may the granted extensions exceed the time limits set by the USC Graduate School.

11. Absences

Doctoral students may be granted a maximum of 24 months (not necessarily consecutive) leave-of-absence by the Department Chair, or by a committee appointed by the Department Chair with the approval of the Graduate School. During these absences, the clock defining the time limits for the qualifying and defense examinations is suspended. The clock is resumed when the student returns from the leave-of-absence. Any leaves longer than 24 months, or leave applied for within four months of the expiration of a time limit, requires an approval of two-thirds of Computer Science faculty. Absences longer than 24 months also require USC Graduate School approval.

12. Transfer Requirements

Students with a relevant MS degree from another university may transfer up to 30 units towards their PhD degree. At most two courses may be substituted for the allowed two 500- level courses in the course requirement. No substitutions are allowed for the 600-level courses.

13. Petitioning for MS Degree

After satisfying the PhD course requirements and completing a minimum of 28 units with a GPA of 3.0, a current CS PhD is eligible to petition for a Master's degree in Computer Science.  This will require the approval of your faculty advisor(s) and the Associate Chair of the department.  The docusign process can be found here .

14. Existing Students and the new PhD Requirements

These requirements shall apply to all students admitted to the Computer Science PhD program for Fall 2023 or thereafter. Students admitted prior to Fall 2023 may choose to have these requirements applied to them. To do this, the student must submit to the Department an approval letter signed by the student’s PhD advisor.

The Computer Science Department PhD program is a top-ranked research-oriented program, typically completed in 5-6 years. There are very few course requirements and the emphasis is on preparation for a career in Computer Science research. 

Eligibility

To be eligible for admission in a Stanford graduate program, applicants must meet:

• Applicants from institutions outside of the United States must hold the equivalent of a United States Bachelor's degree from a college or University of recognized good standing. See detailed information by region on  Stanford Graduate Admissions website. 
• Area of undergraduate study . While we do not require a specific undergraduate coursework, it is important that applicants have strong quantitative and analytical skills; a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science is not required.

Graduate Program

In the Computer Science program, you will learn both the fundamentals of computation and computation’s interaction with the world. Your work will involve a wide range of areas including theoretical computer science, artificial intelligence and machine learning, economics and computer science, privacy and security, data-management systems, intelligent interfaces, operating systems, computer graphics, computational linguistics, robotics, networks, architectures, program languages, and visualization.

You will be involved with researchers in several interdisciplinary initiatives across the University, such as the Center for Research on Computation and Society , the Data Science Initiative , and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society .

Examples of projects current and past students have worked on include leveraging machine learning to solve real-world sequential decision-making problems and using artificial intelligence to help conservation and anti-poaching efforts around the world.

Computer Science Degree

Harvard School of Engineering offers a  Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree in Computer Science , conferred through the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Prospective students apply through Harvard Griffin GSAS; in the online application, select “Engineering and Applied Sciences” as your program choice and select "PhD Computer Science" in the Area of Study menu.

In addition to the Ph.D. in Computer Science, the Harvard School of Engineering also offers master’s degrees in  Computational Science and Engineering as well as in Data Science which may be of interest to applicants who wish to apply directly to a master’s program.

Computer Science Career Paths

Graduates of the program have gone on to a range of careers in industry in companies like Riot Games as game director and Lead Scientist at Raytheon. Others have positions in academia at University of Pittsburgh, Columbia, and Stony Brook.

Phd program, find your passion for research.

Duke Computer Science gives incoming students an opportunity to investigate a range of topics, research problems, and research groups before committing to an advisor in the first year. Funding from the department and Duke makes it possible to attend group meetings, seminars, classes and colloquia. Students may work on multiple problems simultaneously while finding the topic that will motivate them through their first project. Sharing this time of learning and investigation with others in the cohort helps create lasting collaborators and friends.

Write a research proposal the first year and finish the research the second under the supervision of the chosen advisor and committee; present the research results to the committee and peers. Many students turn their RIP work into a conference paper and travel to present it.

Course work requirements are written to support the department's research philosophy. Pass up to four of the required six courses in the first two years to give time and space for immersing oneself in the chosen area.

Years three through five continue as the students go deeper and deeper into a research area and their intellectual community broadens to include collaborators from around the world. Starting in year three, the advisor funds the student's work, usually through research grants. The Preliminary exam that year is the opportunity for the student to present their research to date, to share work done by others on the topic, and to get feedback and direction for the Ph.D. from the committee, other faculty, and peers.

Most Ph.D students defend in years five and six. While Duke and the department guarantee funding through the fifth year, advisors and the department work with students to continue support for work that takes longer.

Teaching is a vital part of the Ph.D. experience. Students are required to TA for two semesters, although faculty are ready to work with students who want more involvement. The Graduate School's Certificate in College Teaching offers coursework, peer review, and evaluation of a teaching portfolio for those who want to teach. In addition, the Department awards a Certificates of Distinction in Teaching for graduating PhD students who have demonstrated excellence in and commitment to teaching and mentoring.

Curriculum & Requirements

Our PhD program requires 30 hours of graduate-level coursework, as well as 30 hours of thesis work. You will also be required to complete a preliminary exam, comprehensive exam and dissertation defense, typically within six years of beginning your coursework.

Moving from MS to PhD

Research-based MS students may transfer to the PhD program at any time during their academic career at CU Boulder. However, you must fulfill the following requirements and submit the following documents.

Requirements

• Be a research-based MS student. Course-based MS students interested in this option should petition and receive prior approval by the Graduate Committee before applying.
• Must have completed at least one year within our CSEN-MS program and have a GPA of at least 3.5 in the program.
• Cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 in both undergrad and MS degree.
• Strong letter of support including funding plan from a CS faculty member.

• Letter of support that includes a funding plan, from a sponsoring CS faculty member
• Copy of transcripts for undergraduate degree and MS degree
• Statement of purpose
• Resume with research and publication details

PhD Program Overview

The aim of the program is for students to acquire the skills to produce successful research in Computer Science. A central component of the program is the interaction of the student with their research advisor, and with the research community. We expect that throughout the program advisors and students will determine the best course of action within the program, within the general rules below.

The PhD program proceeds in three phases:

• Qualifying Phase : acquire a basis of knowledge, techniques and skills in Computer Science
• Candidacy Phase : gain admission to candidacy
• Dissertation Phase : write and defend a dissertation

During the first phase, the Qualifying Phase, the students demonstrate knowledge in several fundamental subareas of Computer Science, start doing research, and refine their research interests, including identifying a research advisor. They will also show competence in writing, producing a technical document (a research or survey paper) that indicates that the student is qualified to pursue their studies eventually leading to a doctorate. The Qualifying Phase ends with a public exam, in which the student presents their paper, and answers questions. Success in this Qualifying Exam leads to the next phase where the student is expected to identify a research topic, and start doing research. This phase concludes with a Candidacy Exam, where the student demonstrates to their committee that they have a viable plan for their PhD. After successful completion of the Candidacy Exam the student will continue to do research, obtaining results that constitutes their PhD dissertation. The last phase concludes with a successful thesis defense. Throughout the process, students document successful research in appropriate publications.

Exceptions to the PhD program requirements will be made only in very extenuating circumstances. Students planning to petition for an exception should first consult their advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies. Minor exceptions require approval of the Graduate Committee. Major exceptions require approval of the entire faculty. No exceptions can be made to University requirements.

Maintaining Good Standing 

To continue to advance through the PhD program, students must maintain good academic standing. In general, good standing means that the student is working actively in the Department’s research community under the guidance of an advisor, and making progress towards completing their dissertation within the allotted time frame.

Normally, students conform to the timeline below:

• Have a research advisor by the end of Summer Quarter, but preferably by the end of Spring Quarter of their first year
• Complete the coursework for the Qualifying Phase by the end of Spring Quarter of their second year
• Pass their Qualifying Exam by the end of Autumn Quarter of their third year
• Pass their Candidacy Exam by the end of the Autumn Quarter of their fifth year
• Have their Thesis Defense by Spring Quarter of their sixth year.

These timeline requirements are automatically extended during approved leaves of absence.

Note:  Meeting these requirements is the student’s responsibility.

Alternative Timelines and Exceptional Circumstances

There may be reasons for which students are not best served by the timeline above. In this case, the student and Advisor should submit an alternate plan to the Graduate Committee. The plan should include a new timeline and its justification.

A student who has joined the program under special circumstances and a timeline that explicitly differs from the standard 6-year one, will be subject to the timeline specified at their admission.

Doctorate Degree vs PhD

Ph.D. programs focus more on the theoretical and abstract aspects of their respective fields of study to understand it as a school of thought rather than just a practical application.

Online Doctorate Programs That Might Interest You

15-18 month doctorate programs without dissertation, boston university.

Boston University offers a Post-Professional Doctor of Occupational Therapy degree program that can be completed in 18 months. The program consists of 10 courses, which are about 33 to 37 credits. Students may concentrate on various areas and can then choose what else they would prefer to learn to complete their credit requirements.

This is a fully online degree program that accelerates each semester’s worth of class to take only seven weeks to complete with new courses starting every September, January, and May. The program is available to doctoral students who have completed an accredited occupational therapy program. There are foundation courses, which include evidence-based practice and health care management, but no dissertation is necessary whereas a doctoral project is still required.

Frontier Nursing University

The Maryville University of St. Louis offers a Doctor of Nursing (DNP) program that is available online. The DNP program requires students to complete a total of 33 credit hours, including 18 to 20 months for completion. This course is an online program that does not require a GMAT or GRE. It may have a waiting list, but unlike other programs, it does not require clinical hours. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Nintendo switch! During COVID, most of the time, we have to stay at home. Playing some games (e.g. animal crossing) on Nintendo switch is really relaxing

Please describe a little about your research and what excites you about it.

If you could choose any other profession outside of engineering or computer science, what would it be? 

I think I would like to pursue J.D. or LL.M in law school. For some of the code-based laws, it is well suited to apply formal methods and logic to represent them. Researchers have proposed a default logic to formalize the federal tex code and its accompanying regulations. What I’m currently doing is applying the logic to formalize the behavior of the software. In the future, I wish I could use that to formalize code-based laws, to detect ambiguities and drafting errors.

What are some factors that helped you decide to pursue your PhD at USC?

There are so many reasons:) First, the professor I want to work with is at USC. Second, there are many PL/SE researchers in USC and we could discuss, collaborate in many possible ways. The atmosphere here is really motivating. Third, USC has so many female clubs (e.g. WinCC, WiSE) where we could learn from each other’s experiences and try to encourage more females in the STEM area. Fourth, USC provides many valuable classes such as public speaking, creative thinking, arts performance and etc. It really broadens our horizons in addition to our own expertise. Last but not least, LA is such a special city with palm trees, skateboarding teens, oddball bohemians, and the occasional movie star. You will fall in love with it once you come here.

What is a memory you'll cherish about your time at USC?

There are so many unforgettable memories at USC. The farmer’s market outside Leavey library, annual conquest rally, birthday celebrations for our lab-mates, and hanging out together in USC Village.

What's one thing about you that might surprise me?

Although I give public presentations in the premier conference and make friends with other researchers, I am a typical introvert and I dislike social activities. When attending the conference, people are expected to interact with each other over few days. To be frank, I enjoy talking with people and introducing my research. However, none of these could compare favorably to solitary. I always spend a lot of time learning and reflecting in solitude. It’s more like a meditation where I could relax and talk with myself.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to stay in academia and look for faculty jobs or other research-related jobs.

I subscribe to the "next right step" advice. Life can be overwhelming at times, especially during your studies, and focusing on the next right step rather than the entire mountain you are trying to hike up has really helped me every day.

I  come from a family where no one has been in academia and I was not exposed to anything close to it growing up. Research, and even college, felt like this scary gated community that only a certain few could participate in and I'm very grateful to those in my undergraduate studies who helped open the gate for me and showed me that anyone can do this. Don't get me wrong, I have many privileges in my life, but I'm very proud to be here at USC and working hard among some very smart peers every day. 

Last week I bought an LA Dodgers hat at the game against the Giants. I think this means I can officially say I live here now.

I work in multi-robot coordination and collaboration. I'm very interested in how robots can work together with other robots and humans as part of a team to help improve our lives. It's slightly different from the majority of current work that is about training a robot to beat us at a certain game or to replace a job completely. I spend a lot of my time thinking about how we can improve the algorithms they use and the way they learn to work together and I find it incredibly fun and rewarding work.

If you could choose any other profession outside of engineering or computer science, what would it be?

I always wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up. I love animals and find biology and genetics fascinating. So, I think I still want to be a vet when I finally grow up.

If they are looking to live somewhere I highly recommend the Culver City area. For things to see, I really like the Getty Center for not only the art but the cool architecture and outdoor garden. I also love cruising up and down the pacific coast highway and going to any of the beaches (although Hermosa beach down south is my favorite). Finally, I'd recommend some Korean BBQ in Koreatown. 

I only applied to drama colleges for college. I was fully expecting to only ever be in LA for acting, but now I'm here for my Ph.D. working in computer science and robotics. Life has a crazy way of working out!

Currently, I am interested in continuing in academia with a postdoctoral position.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

One should never judge their own or someone else’s decisions based on the outcomes (that is, in hindsight). That’s just unfair! Instead, think about whether the decision made sense, given the situation you were in. If you are in a similar situation again, how can you make a better call?

That has to be the network of friends and colleagues that I could build from a variety of professional experiences in both academia and industry. Life is a bit easier with folks you can always turn up to for some advice and of course, for referrals!

I am currently working on enabling human-machine negotiations in natural language such as in English. Think about buyer-seller price negotiations or salary negotiations. Automated systems that negotiate with humans can be really helpful in advancing conversational AI and for teaching social skills to humans. Most practical systems in this space are based on restrictive communication protocols such as a predefined menu of options. Instead, I am trying to incorporate more natural means of communication such as language so that these systems can be more useful in the downstream applications. This area opens up exciting avenues for interdisciplinary research between NLP, Affective Computing, and Psychology. A full-time host for grand cultural events! I just love the job and the feel that comes with it! Even now, I grab such opportunities with both hands.

First and foremost, my interactions with the lab that I am joining. I would definitely recommend that to all the prospective students. Secondly, the ever-increasing research opportunities and a helpful environment over here at USC. Lastly, it would be unfair if I don’t include this but the nice LA weather was always there at the back of my mind.

- Weekend getaway at Big Bear - Manhattan beach - Hikes in Malibu

I am a part of a religious organization at USC called the Bridges International. In Fall 2019, we went to Big Bear for a weekend, in a group of nearly 30. We rented out two huge houses near the lake, danced and sang songs from different cultures around the globe, and went for a hike! Amazing experience!

I have an OCD of repeatedly checking the locks and always making sure that everything is locked. It is so bad that once, during my undergrad, I preferred to calmly lock my door first, when everyone else was vacating the building due to a strong earthquake. As a side note, I later got to know that my friend ran with a laptop in her hand: the most expensive stuff that she could find in her room. People have weird priorities!

I am keeping it wide open for now, although I am slightly inclined towards joining the industry again, given my previous experience as a full-time researcher at Adobe for a couple of years.

This page provides detailed information regarding the Ph.D. Qualifier System and Research Proficiency Exam at Stony Brook University's Department of Computer Science. The information here is intended to be read in conjunction with the Graduate Program Handbook .

The purpose of Ph.D. qualifier is to ensure that the student has acquired an appropriate breadth in major computer science areas relevant to his/her research interest. All Ph.D. students who have not yet met qualifier requirements and passed their RPEs, or who do not have an advisor, will be reviewed each semester, in periodic Research Assessment Meetings. This review is conducted by the entire faculty, who votes on the future status of each student. This review is comprehensive, and includes at least the following items (in no particular order):

• Qualifier courses taken and passed with A- or better.
• All other courses taken, grades received, and GPA.
• Performance as Teaching Assistant.
• Research productivity: publications, talks, software, systems, etc.
• Faculty input, especially from advisors.
• Student´s own input.
• Cumulative history of the student's progress.

The outcome of the review will be a formal letter given to the student and placed in the student´s folder. A student can be placed in one of two categories:

• In Good Standing:  The student has performed well in the previous semester and may continue in the Ph.D. progra.
• Not in Good Standing:  The student had not performed sufficiently well in the previous semester. The student may be placed under probation for one more semester, may lose RA/GA/TA funding, may lose an advisor, or may even be dismissed from the program immediately. Being under probation for two consecutive semesters will likely lead to dismissal.

In addition to the outcome, the assessment letter may also make specific recommendations to the student, as to what will be expected of the student in the following semester (e.g., pass 2 more qualifier courses, pass the RPE, etc.).

Upon entrance to the program, each student is assigned an academic advisor. Each Ph.D. student should seek a faculty member to serve as a research or dissertation advisor within the first two semesters in the program. The choice may be changed. However, each change of advisor may delay a student´s progress. A research advisor is invaluable when it comes to issues such as financial support and progress through various examinations. Most faculty members have research groups, meetings and seminars by which a new student can become acquainted with the research being conducted in the Department. Please refer to the Graduate Program Handbook for the specific rules on choosing or changing an advisor.

MS students who want to be considered for admission to the Ph.D. program should contact CS Graduate Admissions [email protected] for the application process.  They will be usually required to submit a new Personal Statement and update their resume and recommendation letters.  The Graduate Admissions Committee will endeavor to process such special MS-to-PhD requests very quickly. Generally speaking, MS students who passed their Ph.D. qualifying courses and have a strong letter from a funding adviser will have good chances of getting admitted into the Ph.D. program.

Degree requirements

The PhD course requirement for a candidate entering the PhD program with a Master's degree in Computer Science is TWO graduate courses (CSCI 6XXX or above), plus any additional graduate or undergraduate courses mentioned in the letter of admission. Up to one CSCI 6902 doctoral directed studies course can be taken as one of the two required graduate courses. The PhD course requirement for a candidate entering the PhD program with a Bachelor of Computer Science degree is SIX graduate courses (CSCI 6XXX or above), plus any additional graduate or undergraduate courses mentioned in the letter of admission. Up to one CSCI 6901 directed studies course and one CSCI 6902 doctoral directed studies course can be taken as two of the six required courses. All PhD candidates should consult with and get the agreement of their supervisor on their graduate course selection.

Sufficient seminar attendance done to receive a passing grade in CSCI 6999 (attend the lesser of 6 or 75% of seminars denoted for 6999 in the term for each of 6 terms).

In addition to the above graduate coursework requirement, a candidate is required to register in a Directed Doctoral Research Project, CSCI 7900.06 (worth one full course or 6 credit hours), leading to the research aptitude exam. Students should sign up for it in the two consecutive terms before their exam. The course reflects the effort that students put into their research leading to that exam.

Additional courses may be required either as specified upon admission or as a result of the student's performance in the research aptitude/thesis proposal examination to remedy deficiencies in the student's background.

On successful defense of the research aptitude exam candidates enroll in CSCI 9530 for the remainder of their program.

Choosing a research supervisor

Before you begin, you'll need to find a supervisor who is able to support your research interests and has the capacity to take on the added responsibility. Research Aptitude Defence

The research aptitude defence is an internal review of a directed research project to date. The objective of this review is to assess the likelihood of the work yielding thesis quality material in the near, medium and long term. Candidates may provide strong evidence in support of the above objectives by having directed research accepted for publication in a peer reviewed conference / journal. The preparation of the student for this defence is part of the normal research process towards the PhD, and therefore it does not detract from, but contributes to the objective of timely completion of the degree.

Important points:

• Candidates are expected to take and pass the RAD within 5 terms of beginning their program;
• If candidates fail to pass the RAD within this timeline, Faculty scholarship funding will be cut off;
• Decisions regarding any Extensions/ Restoration of funding are made by the Graduate Committee on a case-by-case basis.

When designing your thesis, you should keep in mind that to be successful, it must describe an original contribution to knowledge made while you attended Dalhousie University. It also needs to be valuable enough to merit publication in a reputable scientific journal with a system of external review.

On the ground floor of one of the new computer buildings at the University of Maryland, Anna Kelleher played her centuries-old violin while a program running on a laptop in front of her told her to do things such as raise her chin or widen her stance.

These were common mistakes that Kelleher knows not to do. After all, she’s a graduate student studying violin performance. But she also teaches violin to others, and the program she was demonstrating might someday help those she teaches to play even better.

Believers in artificial intelligence say the program will radically transform our lives in so many ways.

It’s designed by Snehesh Shrestha , a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Computer Science, and is the perfect example of how the University of Maryland is building bridges between AI and every other academic program on campus.

A simple webcam found on your laptop, or even your phone, captures enough movement and audio from your performance that the AI program can tell what you’re doing wrong. Whether your stance is too wide or narrow, to whether or not your chin is in the right spot, it can see and also hear everything you’re doing right and wrong.

The program was designed to try “to understand the whole space, not just blindly building a technology, but understanding how can we fill the gaps that are currently there in the entire music learning process,” Shrestha said. “And by identifying gaps where we can empower the teacher and the students, we could really build something a lot more powerful than just building a single technology. And that really was like the starting point of exploring into what the technology can provide towards the future direction of music education.”

On the monitor, the teacher can see the student in 3D — every angle imaginable — to see how they stand and how they move. Technology, including a piece that looks sort of like a smartwatch, can also send cues to the student through vibrations in the wrist.

Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering ranks highly in the U.S. News & World Report Graduate Rankings for 2024

The college was ranked 31st in the nation, and rose in its aerospace, biological, systems, and computer engineering programs, while holding steady in civil and environmental engineering.

Several of the graduate programs in Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering have earned coveted spots in the top 20 of the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings . Notably, the computer engineering program rose eight spots, from No. 23 to No. 15. The university’s goal to seek solutions to the world’s most complex problems through research and innovation is demonstrated throughout the college’s 13 departments and schools thanks to the top-notch faculty and graduate student research at its Blacksburg campus and its growing presence in the D.C. area.  

The 2024 programs ranked in the top 10 include:  

Environmental Engineering No. 5  

Graduate Systems Engineering program No. 5 (up from No. 6)

Civil Engineering No. 9  

Biological/Agricultural program No. 10 (up from No. 12)

Other programs that fared well include graduate aerospace/astronautical/aeronautical up from No. 14 to No. 11. Mechanical, electrical, and nuclear engineering programs also all cracked the top 20.

“The College of Engineering has been a key player in many of these top-ranked program areas for several years. Thanks to the expertise of our faculty and researchers, we are continuing to find innovative solutions through deep, diverse partnerships here at Virginia Tech, in industry, and around the world,” said Pam VandeVord , Associate Dean for Research and Innovation.

In 2023, 57 faculty from the College of Engineering won 75 awards, with 14 of those awards being categorized as “prestigious” or “highly prestigious” by the National Research Council. In addition, the college makes up more than 40 percent of the university’s total research expenditures and is continuing to diversify revenue streams with more National Institute of Health proposals, transdisciplinary projects, and center-level initiatives. 

“It is our mission to advance the boundaries of engineering knowledge and practice through transdisciplinary research,” said Julie Ross , the Paul and Dorothea Torgersen Dean of Engineering. “The caliber of our world class education is truly reflected in our students, faculty, and alumni, who are sought globally for their excellence. We invest in the resources that prepare our graduates to solve today’s most complex social and technological challenges in and beyond their communities.”

The Innovation Campus , opening in 2025, will expand upon opportunities to prepare computer engineers and computer scientists to lead the frontier of wireless technologies, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and more, while being immersed in one of the most connected tech communities in the country. Its two Master of Engineering programs in  computer science  and  computer engineering  are both industry-connected degrees that will provide students with a deep technical base while expanding their professional skills and preparing them to assume leadership roles. Students will gain expertise in areas such as machine learning, secure information systems and networks, and quantum computing.

The success of the college’s graduate programs depends on numerous forms of support for students, postdoctoral researchers, and new and seasoned faculty. Through scholarships that decrease barriers not only for students, but junior faculty, the college is able to develop, attract, and retain top talent. In 2023 alone, the college received eight National Science Foundation CAREER awards, the most prestigious given by the foundation to junior faculty who exemplify leadership as teacher-scholars in research and education. May 3 (Fri) @ 3:00pm: ”Reeb Graphs for Topological Connectomics,” S. Shailja, ECE PhD Defense

The human brain, comprising billions of neurons, forms complex neural networks that are spatially distributed across various regions and change structurally over time. However, our understanding of the brain connectivity remains limited, lacking scalable quantifiers. Traditional methods, like the 2D adjacency matrices, oversimplify these connections and omit topological information, despite well documented topological deteriorations and irregularities associated with neurological and developmental disorders. This dissertation poses a central research question: Can we model the structural connections in brain networks in a scalable way to represent spatial information flow? Utilizing diffusion MRI data, this work introduces a novel Reeb graph-based method that efficiently encodes the topology and geometry of the brain’s white matter pathways. By defining the evolution of level sets, we re-bundle 3D trajectories of neuronal fiber pathways, capturing critical geometric events – akin to a brain fingerprint. This method proves valuable in detecting disease-related and age-dependent topology alterations in studies on Alzheimer’s and brain tumors. Beyond neuroscience, the approach has broader applications, demonstrated through the development of a general algorithm for discovering structure in spatio-temporal trajectories of human behavior, as recorded by GPS. This algorithm identifies deviations in human movement, signaling anomalies against normal activities. In summary, this thesis presents an extensive exploration of spatial Reeb graphs, detailing their implementation for spatiotemporal data and discussing their potential as general purpose tools for scalable trajectory modeling.

Shailja is a Ph.D. candidate in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, advised by Prof. B. S. Manjunath. In 2016, she graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the Electrical Engineering Department at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Shailja joined UCSB in 2018 and received an M.Sc. in ECE from UCSB in 2020. In 2023, Shailja was awarded the Fiona and Michael Goodchild best graduate student mentor award. She has also been named an NSF iRedefine ECE Fellow. Shailja’s research vision is to model multi-modal healthcare data for precise diagnostics using AI and integration of domain knowledge to “close-the-loop” between surgeons, research scientists, and engineers.
