Work begun by Carl Rogers with his visionary person-centered model and its research approach has finally come into the present. What is needed is a propelling will for the field and its researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to educate ourselves and our extended community of the research-validated truth of what this visionary model and approach can accomplish for all learners in the near future and beyond. To unite our efforts in this direction, we need to engage our entire community of researchers, practitioners, business and community members, media partners, and policymakers in efforts to spread the word in the form necessary to personally reach them. The approach must be top-down and bottom-up simultaneously and respect the uniqueness of individuals and their cultural and community contexts. It is imperative that we adopt a living systems ecological perspective and build on sound theories and research methods. Suggestions for how this might be done building on 25 years of research are presented and supported with current research that points the way to an educational transformation much needed in our twenty-first century world.

The emotions of this time are the deepest ones we humans experience—loss, grief, fear. Yet it helps us immensely if we can share these emotions and not push them away or pretend they’re not present. I find that sharing our common experiences of grief, anger, anxiety allows us to move closer together in support of one another. It also helps quell the natural tendency to transfer impotence and grief into anger and rage. For the university, as in other organizations, I feel it is essential to name these emotions and to use them as an opportunity for solidarity. I’ve experienced how much capacity, creativity and even joy we humans can experience when we’re sharing our despair and grief. It’s essential that we don’t let our strong reactions to this time drive us farther apart. Margaret Wheatley (2011, June).

This article, the third in a series of four installments, begins by discussing the need for paradigm change in education and for a critical systems approach to paradigm change, and examines current progress toward paradigm change. Then it explores what a learner-centered, Information-Age educational system should be like, including the APA learner-centered psychological principles, the National Research Council's findings on how people learn, the work of McCombs and colleagues on learner-centered schools and classrooms, personalized learning, differentiated instruction, and brain-based instruction. Finally, one possible vision of a learner-centered school is described. (Contains 3 tables.)
