This fisherman PowerPoint template uses the same strategy as the sunflower one: striking imagery against a white or muted background.

Add color and design to your slides with Themes
PowerPoint provides a variety of design themes —including coordinated color schemes, backgrounds, font styles, and placement of placeholders.
Note: You may be looking to learn about using the Design Ideas button available for Microsoft 365 subscribers. See about working with PowerPoint Designer.
Pick a theme when you do File > New to start a new presentation.
These built-in themes are great for widescreen (16:9) and standard screen (4:3) presentations. To change the slide size, see Change the size of your slides .
If offered, choose a color variation, and then select Create .
If you change your mind, you can always change the theme or variant later on the Design tab.
On the Design tab, pick a theme with the colors, fonts, and effects that you like.
To apply a different color variation of a particular theme, in the Variants group, pick a variant.
Note: If you don't see any variants, it could be because you're using a custom theme, an older theme designed for earlier versions of PowerPoint, or because you imported some slides from another presentation with an older or custom theme.
Select right arrow in the Variants group to select different Colors , Fonts , Effects , or Background Styles and choose from built-in options or customize your own.
Create and save a custom theme
You can create a custom theme by modifying an existing theme or by starting from scratch with a blank presentation.
Select your first slide, and then on the Design tab, select the down arrow in the Variants group.
Select Colors , Fonts , Effects , or Background Styles and choose from built-in options or customize your own.
When you're done customizing styles, select the down arrow in the Themes group, and then select Save Current Theme .
Give your theme a name, and select Save . By default, it is save with your other PowerPoint themes and will be available in the Themes group under a Custom header.

Microsoft Office Themes in PowerPoint
Even a blank presentation has a Theme : the Office theme with a white slide background, a default set of text colors and accents, and an Office font set of Calibri Light for headings and Calibri for body text .
Additionally, PowerPoint offers Variants for most of the Themes .
Note : One presentation can have multiple themes!
A design Theme is a collection of predefined formatting options that includes theme colors , fonts , effects , and background settings . In PowerPoint, all Themes displays in the Themes gallery on the Design tab in the Themes group:
The Themes gallery displays thumbnails for each Theme . Each thumbnail represents:
- A sample of the Font set in the form of an uppercase and lowercase letter A ( Aa ),
- A Colors set in the form of colored blocks at the bottom,
- A background graphics that set the tone of the title slide.
To see the full gallery, use the scroll arrows or click the More button:
The Themes gallery contains:
- In the This Presentation area, thumbnails with samples of the used themes,
- In the Custom area, thumbnails for all custom themes found in the Document Theme folder ,
- In the Office area, all predefined themes you can apply.
Apply a Theme
In the Normal or Outline view, hover over a Theme thumbnail to display the theme name in tooltips and see a quick preview of how the new theme will change the presentation slide:
Note : In the Slide Sorter view, PowerPoint displays only the theme names in tooltips but not a preview. In the Notes Page view, the Themes group of the Design tab is disabled.
To apply a chosen Theme , do one of the following:
This command applies the chosen Theme to:
- Slides with the theme of the current slide, if the presentation uses more than one theme and no slides are selected,
- Apply to All Slides ,
- Apply to Selected Slides :
In the Choose Theme or Themed Document dialog box, browse the theme you want to apply or template with the needed theme, then click Open .
- Themes use specific fonts with different font sizes. Thus, some themes can change the appearance of objects, such as shapes, text boxes, and diagrams, as well as shift presentation elements. Therefore, we strongly recommend checking a presentation after applying a new theme.
Apply theme variants
Most themes offer various color variations, which are displayed in the Variants group on the Design tab. For example, variants for the Facet theme:
If you don't see any options in the Variants group for the selected theme, it might be because it is a custom theme, or an older theme designed for earlier versions of PowerPoint:
To see all the proposed variants, if available, use the navigation arrows or click the More button:
For example, variants for the Metropolitan theme:
Create a Custom Theme
You can customize any of the sets used in the Theme : Colors , Fonts , Effects , and Background Styles . In addition to saving individual settings, it is possible to save the entire customized theme. To do so, after all customization, do the following:
1. On the Design tab, in the Themes group, click the More button to open the Themes gallery, then click Save Current Theme... :
2. In the Save Current Theme dialog box:
- Click the Save button.
- Office Theme (*.thmx) file format is somewhat like a template, but it contains only theme settings (fonts, colors, background style, and effects). This format is useful when you don't want to save any content.
The location of the Document Themes folder may vary, but it is usually located here:
C:\Users\ <user_name>\ AppData\ Roaming\ Microsoft\ Templates\ Document Themes , where <user_name> is your login name.
Modify a custom Theme
In fact, you cannot edit a custom Theme . You can simply set up the current Theme (custom or predefined) and save it as a new custom Theme by overwriting the existing file.
Share a custom Theme
A custom Theme is only available to the current user logged in to the PC, tablet, etc. To share it with other users or locations, do the following:
1. Ensure that the customization is saved - you can see the *.thmx file with the custom name you defined for the custom Theme in the Document Themes folder (see where you can find the Document Themes folder ).
2. Copy this *.thmx file to another location you need or send it.
- If you prefer to see the custom Theme in the Themes list, copy a *.thmx file to the correspondent Document Themes folder in the new location.
- If you don't want to see this custom Theme in the Themes list, you can copy a *.thmx file to any location except the Document Themes folder (you will need to use the Browse for Themes... option to apply this Theme ).
Delete a custom Theme
To delete a custom Theme , do one of the following:
- In Windows Explorer, open the Document Themes folder, then delete the *.thmx file with the name you have defined for the custom Theme .
- In the Themes list, right-click the custom Theme , then choose Delete... in the popup menu:
Note : If you don't want to delete a custom Theme but don't want it showing up on the Themes list, move the file to a folder outside the Document Themes folder (you will need to use the Browse for Themes... option to apply it).

Where to Find Free PowerPoint Themes & Templates
A default template can be drab and lifeless. Fortunately, with plenty of free resources available, there is no need to settle. We have compiled some of the best PowerPoint themes & templates.
It's not always easy to prepare a professional presentation , but one of the most tried-and-true methods is to use Microsoft PowerPoint. PowerPoint is almost a necessity in modern presentations, so you can't go wrong with it -- but you can do it wrongly, and one huge mistake is neglecting the aesthetics.
Sure, most of your effort should be directed towards improving your presentation skills since no amount of visual flair can salvage a dead effort. That being said, the right template can be the difference between a memorable presentation and an average one, so do spend some time finding one that's appropriate for you.
Installing a PowerPoint template is simple. For both 2010 and 2013 versions, just move the templates into:
C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
...and restart PowerPoint. Then, you should be able to use them by selecting File > New > My Templates .
Microsoft Office Templates
We mentioned Microsoft Office Templates when we explored these PowerPoint templates for photos and concluded it to be a fantastic resource. Looking at it again, I'm surprised by how beautiful some of these free templates are. Great job, Microsoft.
The selection is broken down into dozens of useful categories, ranging from Agendas to Calendars, Education to Nature, Invoices to Resumes, and so much more. Whatever your PowerPoint is meant to convey, there's a good chance you'll find a relevant template to use.
To show you what I mean, let's feature one of their better options: Ion .
The combination of a soft, dark-ish background with sharp, light text is pleasant on the eyes while the red tab in the top right corner provides a bit of interesting pop. If projecting this template (rather than displaying on a screen), be sure the projector has enough contrast to keep the text legible from afar.
Note: This gallery also includes templates for Excel and Word so feel free to browse through those as well. Then again, if you're only interested in PowerPoint, feel free to ignore them!
SmileTemplates
The second best free resource is SmileTemplates . Here you'll find hundreds of PowerPoint templates that cover the spectrum from bad to good, but most of them lean towards the good side. I think you'll be happy with what's available.
Like the Microsoft Office Templates site, SmileTemplates is divided into several categories that include Business, Education, Medical, Nature, Technology, and more. Whatever your presentation is about, you probably won't have much trouble finding an acceptable template.
Our featured template from this site is: Autumn Leaves .
What I like best about this one is the vibrant colors. A lot of presentations, at least of the ones I've seen, tend to be drab and safe because that's what passes for "professional" a lot of the time. Here, the slides are serious but lively, and it works out well.
TemplatesWise
While not as comprehensive or organized as Microsoft Office Templates, TemplatesWise does offer a number of awesome selections and, thus, is still useful as a free resource for templates. It just won't be as convenient to browse.
Templates are divided into six categories: General, Abstract, Business, Finance, Nature, and Travel. The front page has sixteen Featured templates, which appear to be ones that the editor finds particularly good. I recommend checking them all out.
Our featured template from this site is: Lightbulbs On Blackboard .
It's another light-on-dark template, except a bit more extreme since it's white-on-black. The lightbulbs and chalkboard theme make it a good choice for education-related presentations obviously, but could also be used in an "ideas symposium" kind of context.
FPPT , also known as Free PowerPoint Templates, is a simple site with a simple design full of simple templates. Not that simple is necessarily bad -- you don't want to go overboard because it might detract from your presentation -- but if you're looking for "WOW!" then it may not be the best place.
Browsing the gallery is somewhat inconvenient since the only way to filter is by category. There's no indication of ratings or download counts, and each page is limited to twelve items. That being said, the templates are surprisingly consistent -- none are amazing, but none are horrible either.
The template we'll feature for this one is: Diverging Arrows .
Simple and minimalistic without feeling like it's missing important elements. The color palette is good for a professional setting, but the graphics take the edge off a little bit so it's not overly serious. I'd choose it for a business-related presentation.
Powered Template
Powered Template is a site full of templates, both paid and free, but they tend to be a bit hit-or-miss. The free section is only a small portion of the repository, but you'll still be able to choose from between 250 to 300 options, so consider giving it a try.
To be honest, you'll quickly see why these templates are free: most of them just aren't very good. However, with a bit of tweaking with fonts and colors, you might be able to redeem them into something great. Think of this as a last resort resource -- you'll probably find nothing, but there's a small chance you'll find something.
The template I'll feature here is: Desert Trees .
Though not exactly suitable for a business environment, the included background graphics are quite nice and the color theme is lovely, if not a bit simple. It would most likely be useful for personal story or creative endeavor types of presentations.
PowerPoint Can Be Beautiful!
There's no need to settle for a default template, which can be drab and lifeless. Spruce up your next presentation with one of the thousands of free templates above. If anything, it'll make you feel more confident as you present.
Other visual improvements include embedding videos in PowerPoint and adding cool animations . You could also incorporate a few creative uses for PowerPoint and even start using PowerPoint for non-presentation purposes, such as making a visual resume .
If you got this far and decided that PowerPoint isn't right for you, consider switching to one of these PowerPoint alternatives .
What do you think of these free PowerPoint templates? Will you be using them? Know of any other website resources that I missed? Share them with us in the comments!

Ask a new question
Powerpoint Theme doesn't carry over assets into new presentation
My colleague created a new theme for Powerpoint to be shared with the entire company for internal and external use. She has photos, fonts, and other assets in the theme. We saved the theme as a Powerpoint theme to a central folder, and when we attempt to apply that theme to a new presentation, none of the images or assets carry over. We tried saving it as a template instead, and it works, but its not ideal if we want to create new slides of a specific layout. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

There's no reason why you can't create new slides of a specific layout from a template. Save the file as a Template (.potx) rather than a Theme. Themes cannot hold any content, nor custom table styles, nor custom formatted Notes or Handout masters.
To create a template that can successfully be applied to existing presentations, please read my how-to article: Legacy Slides - Best Practices
Thank you for your response!
I think the issue my colleague was having is that we also saved the slides as a .potx, but when we create a new presentation that way and try to insert new slides, none of the assets pull into the new slides either.
So if I open a new powerpont with the template version and go to layout, none of the designs created by my colleague appear, all of the assets are replaced with a "place image here".
There was a previous employee that was able to set things up to where we could insert new slides with specific colorings, photos, and other assets from the layout tab, but we don't know how to replicate this for the new design.
Thank you for your help thus far!
It sounds like your file is not correctly constructed. From your description alone, I can't tell what the problem with content is. Having 40 layouts all called "Custom Layout" is also a red flag. You might consider hiring a PowerPoint professional to set up your template.
