Minimum entrance requirement.

Some programmes have more specific requirements. Qualifying examinations to test the applicants' abilities to follow the prescribed courses and/or interviews may be conducted. Applicants with qualifications other than an honours degree may be considered on their individual merits.

English Language Proficiency Test

An applicant who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain one of the followings:

• CET-6/TEM-8 cannot be used to substitute the above tests
• Please pay attention to the valid period of your TOEFL / IELTS score, and request the Educational Testing Service (ETS) / British Council to send your official score report to the University direct in a timely manner. Original or certified copy of the Examinee's score record is not accepted. If your test is taken within a two-year period by the time you submit your MPhil / PhD application, but the ETS / British Council cannot send your official score report to the University direct due to expiry of the valid period, you are required to re-take the test or take another English language proficiency test.
• TOEFL iBT Home Edition will not be accepted.

GMAT and GRE

• Faculty of Business and Economics applicants are required to demonstrate their capability for graduate studies by obtaining satisfactory scores in the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), taken within five years
• Department of Psychology applicants whose first degree is not in Psychology are required to obtain a minimum score of 550 in the GRE’s Subject Test in Psychology taken within five years

Entry requirements for doctoral studies

In order to be accepted for doctoral (PhD) studies, the applicant is required to meet the general entry requirements and any special requirements outlined in the position announcement. The applicant must also possess any other abilities required in order to benefit from the education.

General entry requirements

The general entry requirements are met by those who

• have been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
• have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle or
• otherwise acquired largely equivalent knowledge.

KTH may exempt an individual applicant from the general entry requirements if there is an extraordinary reason to do so.

Specific entry requirements

 The specific requirements may relate to:

• knowledge from higher education or equivalent studies
• special professional or vocational experience
• necessary language skills or other conditions determined by the programme, subject or project

Language requirements

English language proficiency equivalent to (the Swedish upper secondary school) English course B/6 is required. The requirement can be satisfied through a result equal to, or higher than, those stated in the following internationally recognised English tests:

• TOEFL Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test, total score of 575. TOEFL ITP is not accepted.
• TOEFL iBT internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test, total score of 90
• IELTS Academic/IELTS UKVI: A minimum overall mark of 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5
• Cambridge ESOL: Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) Certificate in Advanced English or Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) (Certificate of Proficiency in English)
• Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): Minimum score of 90
• University of Michigan, ECPE (Examination for the certificate of Proficiency in English)
• Pearson PTE Academic: Score of 62 (writing 61)

The language requirement can also be fulfilled through previous university and upper secondary school studies. More information on recognised English tests, previous studies, and required documents is provided by University Admissions in Sweden  under information for Master's level.

 Requirements regarding skills in the Swedish language may also be imposed.

Assessment of entry requirements

Entry requirements and prospective students' suitability are assessed at each school by the school's director of third-cycle education.

Foreign Higher Education studies

In most cases, studies that meet the general entry requirements for doctoral (PhD/third-cycle) education in the country where the degree is issued will also meet the general entry requirements for doctoral studies at KTH. If you are unsure about the status of your education, you may contact the Swedish Council for Higher Education  for an evaluation.

Assessment of equivalence

The assessment of equivalence determines whether an applicant's knowledge – acquired in another system – is equivalent to the higher education studies that are normally required for the doctoral subject in question.

Exemption from the general entry requirements

An exemption from the general entry requirements may be granted to an applicant who has not completed courses corresponding to 240 credits but who has already completed advanced (master's/second-cycle) courses corresponding to a minimum of 60 credits, as well as an independent degree project linked to the intended subject of study.

Assessment of suitability

Applicants are judged suitable for doctoral education if they possess the necessary maturity, judgement and capacity for independent critical analysis.

Candidate(s) will be selected from among the applicants who fulfil the requirements for doctoral education. The results of studies at an advanced (master's) level or in the form of independent work are of particular interest in this context, as is the candidate's ability to benefit from the studies (suitability).

The selection process is handled by each school and the final decision is made by the head of school, in consultation with the intended supervisor(s).

The admission process is conducted at the school-level.

Doctoral studies may lead to two qualifications, a licentiate and/or a doctoral degree. Those accepted to studies leading to a doctoral degree may take a licentiate degree as an intermediate stage in their studies. Students accepted to studies leading to a licentiate degree who subsequently wish to pursue studies leading to a doctoral degree must submit a new application and are not guaranteed admission.

You'll need to meet our entry requirements for academic qualifications and English proficiency—plus have some valuable personal qualities.

We will make our decision about accepting you as a doctoral candidate based on your academic record, your research background, and the availability of supervision and other resources in the area of your research interests. You are not guaranteed admission to a doctoral programme at the University even if you hold one of the entry requirement qualifications ('prerequisites') listed below.

Academic qualification requirements

From a new zealand university.

If you have studied at a university in New Zealand you will need:

• a Bachelor's degree with Honours or a Master's degree with a GPA* of no less than 6 (letter grade B+), or
• to be currently enrolled in a Master's thesis at this University and meet the requirements for conversion to a PhD, or
• be able to produce evidence to the satisfaction of the Dean, Faculty of Graduate Research, of other adequate training and the ability to proceed with the proposed course for the degree.

*  The calculation of your GPA will depend on your prerequisite degree.

From a university outside New Zealand

International applicants are expected to have equivalent qualifications to those required of New Zealand

applicants:

• If you have a four-year Bachelor's degree graded in a four-point GPA system, you will need to have a GPA of at least 3.0 out of 4.0.
• If you have a Bachelor's degree graded in the British system (including from India), you must have been awarded the degree with first or upper second-class Honours.
• Or you will need to be able to produce evidence to the satisfaction of the Dean, Faculty of Graduate Research, of other adequate training and the ability to proceed with the proposed course for the degree.

If your first language is not English, you must also meet the English language requirements.

For some programmes, you may need to provide evidence of relevant work or research experience.

Certified copies

You must provide certified copies of academic transcripts for any qualifications, except for those awarded by this University. Applicants from EU countries must also provide the Diploma Supplement. If your application is successful, we may request to see the original transcripts.

If your documents are in a language other than English, you must attach English translations certified by an accredited translator and bearing the translator's official stamp. You'll need to upload both certified copies of your academic transcript and certified copies of the translation.

GPA calculations

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated as per approved University Research Committee methods for doctoral assessment. These will be based, where possible, on 240 points (or equivalent) from the relevant qualification(s) that provides admission to the doctoral programme. For example, based on courses at levels 400 and 500 (or equivalent) completed as part of your Honours or Master's degree.

English language requirements

If you are an international student and your first language is not English, you must provide evidence of your English proficiency before you will be accepted as a doctoral candidate. The University's English language requirements are strict and are not negotiable.

If you do not provide evidence that you meet these requirements, your Offer of Place will only be conditional—which will affect your ability to obtain a student visa.

The minimum requirements are:

• TOEFL: minimum score of 90 with a minimum of 21 in writing and other sub-scores at a minimum of the mid-point of high-intermediate level, or
• IELTS: Academic overall band of 6.5, no sub-score below 6 (Education and Law have slightly higher requirements), or
• a minimum of two ratings of 5 and two ratings of 4 in the Victoria University of Wellington English for Academic Purposes test, or
• Pearson Test of English, with a score of 58 (with a communicative score of not less than 50).

On average it takes three months of full-time English language study to improve an overall IELTS bandwidth score by 0.5 or a TOEFL score by 25 points.

Please note: The Faculty of Education and Faculty of Law require a higher level of English proficiency:

Faculty of Education - IELTS: an overall band of 6.5, with no sub-score below 6.5 (or equivalent)

Faculty of Law - IELTS: an overall band of 7, including a writing sub-score of 7 and no sub-score below 6.5 (or equivalent)

English for Academic Purposes programme

The University offers an English for Academic Purposes programme , leading to the award of a Certificate of Proficiency in English. You may wish to enrol in this programme before you begin your doctoral studies.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will accept some online/at home versions of English proficiency tests.

Having the right academic qualifications and competence in English may not be enough for you to succeed as a doctoral candidate. You will also need to:

• have a strong interest in doing a substantial research project over an extended period of time
• be self-disciplined and focused on your research
• be persistent in the face of setbacks
• be willing to respond effectively to advice and criticism
• be able to work independently
• be willing to work within the scholarly tradition
• have stable financial and personal circumstances
• be able to write well, as you'll need to communicate your results and write a thesis.

English language requirements

All teaching at Sussex is in the English language and you must be sufficiently fluent in English to be able to benefit from your education.

If your first language is not English you will need to demonstrate that you meet the University’s English language requirements for the degree you have applied for. You can do this in a number of ways:

• take an English language proficiency test , such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
• provide evidence from other English qualifications that confirm your language level
• provide evidence that you meet one of our English language exemptions , or
• successfully pass the Sussex Centre for Language Studies pre-sessional English course .

If you have not taken an English language test yet, or do not have a current valid test score, you can still apply for courses, but any offer you receive will normally be conditional on meeting our language requirement.

Our English language requirements

Details of our specific English language requirements for your degree are shown in the entry requirements section for each PhD degree .

We have three main levels of English, depending on the course applied for: standard, high and advanced.

In terms of IELTS, these three levels are:

Advanced: A small number of degrees have a requirement of IELTS 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each of the four components.

High: An IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each of the four components.

Standard: For postgraduate degrees in Mathematics and Physics, the requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall with at least 6.0 in each of the four components.

We would expect English language qualifications to have been achieved within the two years before the start of your course.

Other accepted qualifications

We accept a range of English language proficiency tests and English language qualifications. Students from certain countries are exempt from our English language requirements:

Proficiency tests

Advanced – 185 overall, including at least 176 in each skill

High – 176 overall, including at least 169 in each skill

Standard – 169 overall, including at least 169 in each skill.

We would normally expect the CAE test to have been taken within two years before the start of your course.

We only accept LanguageCert when taken at SELT Test Centres. We do not accept the online version.

If you are applying for degree-level study we can consider your IELTS test from any test centre, but if you require a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for an English language or in-person pre-sessional English course (not combined with a degree) the test must be taken at a UKVI-approved IELTS test centre. In the CEFR we require B2 overall, with B2 in each component. In the 1119 we require grades 1-6 (for awards up to 2008) or grades C or above (for awards from 2009) in English Language. Note that the qualification must be jointly awarded by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES).

Grades A1-C6 (1-6) in English language when awarded by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) or the National Examinations Council (NECO)

If you are a national of one of the countries below, or if you have recently completed a qualification equivalent to a UK Bachelor’s degree or higher in one of these countries, you will normally meet our English requirement.

Qualifications obtained by distance learning or awarded by studying outside these countries cannot be accepted for English language purposes.

You are normally expected to have completed the qualification within two years before starting your course at Sussex.

If the qualification was obtained earlier than this, we expect you to be able to demonstrate that you have maintained a good level of English. This includes living in an English-speaking country or working in an occupation that required you to use English regularly and to a high level.

These courses are taught at Sussex and focus on English for academic purposes and study skills, rather than exam preparation.

You focus on comprehension for lectures and seminars, critical reading and research projects, note taking, academic writing and other study skills.

A pre-sessional course also prepares you for the culture and practice of studying in the UK.

If you successfully complete the appropriate pre-sessional English course, it can be used to meet our English language requirements and gain entry to your chosen degree.

English language and visa requirements

Sussex’s English language requirements for degree courses are set at a level that meets the minimum requirements for obtaining a Student Visa.

As a recognised UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)-approved sponsor, the University of Sussex is able to make its own assessment of each applicant’s English language ability when issuing a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for degree-level study and does not need to base the assessment on a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) – so if, for example, you are taking an IELTS test it can be from any IELTS test centre.

There are minimum requirements for postgraduate admission to the University. Some departments may set higher academic or language requirements. Please consult the Course Directory for full information on each course’s requirements. 

Key requirements

Postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge is intense and very intellectually demanding, so the University has high academic entry requirements. You are normally expected to hold or to have achieved by the start of your course:

• minimum of a good upper second class (good 2:1) honours degree from a UK university or an equivalent standard from an overseas university; and
• completion of, or intermission from any current training or education course

To check if your international qualification meets the University minimum requirement, please consult the international requirements  page.

This is a minimum requirement and meeting it is not in itself sufficient to gain a place.  Entry to our courses is very competitive and we are unable to make offers to many candidates who meet the academic minimum.

If you believe your academic performance is or has been negatively affected by your circumstances, for example ill health, it is important that you use the exam mitigation process at your current university.  If you wish to draw our attention to any factors, you should do this within your application.

Further information on fees, other costs and funding can be found in our Finance pages. If you are made a conditional offer of admission, you will then need to confirm that you are able to meet your fees and living costs for the length of your course. However, if you do already have funding for your study in place, you can provide details of this with your application.

College membership

All applicants who are made a formal offer of admission will receive an offer of College membership. The University of Cambridge is a collegiate university, and all its students are required to be members of a College.

English language

All applicants are required to meet a minimum English language requirement before you are admitted to your proposed course of study. For more details check the Competence in English section of the website.

Admissions Requirements

The following are general requirements you should meet to apply to the MIT Sloan PhD Program. Complete instructions concerning application requirements are available in the online application.

General Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent
• A strong quantitative background (the Accounting group requires calculus)
• Exposure to microeconomics and macroeconomics (the Accounting group requires microeconomics)

Application Components

Statement of purpose.

Your written statement is your chance to convince the admissions committee that you will do excellent doctoral work and that you have the promise to have a successful career as an academic researcher. 

GMAT/GRE Scores

We require either a valid GMAT or valid GRE score. At-home testing is allowed. Your unofficial score report from the testing institution is sufficient for application. If you are admitted to the program, you will be required to submit your official test score for verification.    

We do not have a minimum score requirement. We do not offer test waivers. Registration information for the GMAT (code X5X-QS-21) and GRE (code 3510) may be obtained at www.mba.com and www.ets.org respectively.

TOEFL/IELTS Scores

We require either a valid TOEFL (minimum score 577 PBT/90 IBT ) or valid IELTS (minimum score 7) for all non-native English speakers. Your unofficial score report from the testing institution is sufficient for application. If you are admitted to the program, you will be required to submit your official test score for verification.    Registration information for TOEFL (code 3510) and IELTS may be obtained at www.toefl.org and www.ielts.org respectively.

The TOEFL/IELTS test requirement is waived only if you meet one of the following criteria:

• You are a native English speaker.
• You attended all years of an undergraduate program conducted solely in English, and are a graduate of that program.

Please do not contact the PhD Program regarding waivers, as none will be discussed. If, upon review, the faculty are interested in your application with a missing required TOEFL or IELTS score, we may contact you at that time to request a score.

Transcripts

We require unofficial copies of transcripts for each college or university you have attended, even if no degree was awarded. If these transcripts are in a language other than English, we also require a copy of a certified translation. In addition, you will be asked to list the five most relevant courses you have taken.

Letters of Recommendation

We require three letters of recommendation. Academic letters are preferred, especially those providing evidence of research potential. We allow for an optional  fourth recommendation, but no more than four recommendations are allowed.

Your resume should be no more than two pages. You may chose to include teaching, professional experience, research experience, publications, and other accomplishments in outside activities.

Writing Sample(s)

Applicants are encouraged to submit a writing sample. For applicants to the Finance group, a writing sample is required. There are no specific guidelines for your writing sample. Possible options include (but are not limited to) essays, masters’ theses, capstone projects, or research papers.

Video Essay

A video essay is required for the Accounting research group and optional for the Marketing and System Dynamics research groups. The essay is a short and informal video answering why you selected this research group and a time where you creatively solved a problem. The video can be recorded with your phone or computer, and should range from 2 to 5 minutes in length. There is no attention — zero emphasis! — on the production value of your video.

If you want to enrol in a research degree at Swinburne, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to undertake research in your area of interest. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways. When applying to undertake a higher degree by research, you must:

• comply with Swinburne's English language requirements 
• have met one of the minimum entry requirements listed in one of the study areas or demonstrate equivalent prior learning and research experience as set out in Swinburne’s required standards of achievement and research experience.

Entry requirements by research program

You must reach the required standards of achievement and research experience for entry into one of Swinburne's PhD programs. The required standard of achievement is based on your research experience to date. There are also minimum entry requirements that are unique to each program.

Required standards of achievement and experience

Phd (doctor of philosophy).

PhD candidates (including Impact PhD candidates) are required to make a significant and original contribution to a discipline or profession by submitting one of the following, equivalent to 70,000–100,000 words:

• a written research thesis 
• a written research thesis including associated papers 
• an artefact, such as a creative work or design product, with an accompanying exegesis (critical explanation).

As a PhD candidate, you're expected to:

• conduct independent research of high originality and quality 
• independently conceive of, design, conduct and complete a research project or program 
• develop a critical knowledge and understanding of the research area and methodological approaches 
• communicate convincingly with clarity and relevance to appropriate audiences.

Entry requirements PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), including Impact PhD

You must have a demonstrated ability to undertake significant research in a defined area of interest to enrol in a research degree at Swinburne. When applying to undertake a higher degree by research, you must:

• comply with Swinburne's English language requirements
• have met one of the minimum entry requirements listed in one of the study areas or demonstrate equivalent prior learning and research experience as set out in Swinburne’s required standards of achievement and research experience .

Partnered and offshore PhD programs

Our partnered and offshore PhD programs allow you to complete your research degree jointly at Swinburne and at an international or Australian partner university.

Graduate Certificate of Research and Innovation Management

As part of your  Doctor of Philosophy  program, you will concurrently earn a  Graduate Certificate of Research and Innovation Management (GC-RESIM) . 

You will complete the coursework (two core units and two electives) alongside your PhD program. Course material is delivered via both online units and on-campus workshops. The assessments for core units are embedded within existing PhD milestones to avoid disruption. 

This course will expose you to various industry practices within your chosen field and provide you with a wider range of career options. This course has been designed to enhance the experience, career prospects and employability of PhD students through innovative research training.

Master by Research

A Master by Research degree requires you to demonstrate mastery of inquiry in a field of a discipline or profession. You will undertake supervised research and write a thesis equivalent to 50,000–60,000 words.

A Master by Research candidate is expected to:

• plan, conduct and complete a research project or program 
• understand relevant techniques in the field demonstrated both by your comprehensive review of the literature and by your research processes 
• access and interpret key data in relevant fields 
• present outcomes clearly and logically using relevant media.

Entry requirements

You must have completed a three-year bachelor degree at AQF level 7 (or equivalent) with a minimum average of 65% in the final year units of study.

You will also need to check the specific entry requirements for your program.

Professional Doctorate

Candidates undertaking a Professional Doctorate make a significant and original contribution to professional practice. You will write a thesis and complete a coursework component. Your overall works should be equivalent to 70,000–100,000 words.

A Professional Doctorate student is expected to:

Entry requirements for Doctor of Psychology programs

You must have completed at least four years of studies in psychology at a high level of achievement. For example, one of the following:

• a four-year (or equivalent) sequence of studies in psychology at first or upper second class level in a course or courses accredited by the APS 
• equivalent overseas qualifications recognised by the APS 
• a master degree in psychology. 
• a high level of achievement is the equivalent of an honours degree class 1 (average grade between 80–100) or class 2A (average grade between 70–79). 

You must have been approved for the award of the degree or degrees you studied.

You must also have experience or training in counselling, such as:

• experience in face-to-face counselling 
• significant training in counselling skills 
• counselling skills in tertiary programs 
• other appropriate work experience. 

You must also undertake a selection interview.

Integrated PhD program

Integrated phd program structure.

We offer Integrated PhD programs across selected discipline areas as a pathway to turn your Master of Research into a higher degree by research. The program combines structured coursework units in research methods and communication with self-directed research projects.

Master of Research

During this program you’ll undertake supervised research in the discipline of your choice, develop skills in project management and critical thinking, and refine your communication skills. You will complete a major thesis that demonstrates mastery of inquiry in a field of a discipline or profession to receive a Master of Research while preparing you for a PhD.

Entry requirements:

• have successfully completed an undergraduate degree with a university approved by Swinburne 
• have achieved a weighted credit average in their degree.

Successful applicants will receive a conditional offer for the Doctor of Philosophy components of the program.

If you want to, you can then progress into the PhD. During the PhD program you will undertake further supervised research. You will submit a written research thesis consisting of 70,000–100,000 words with the aim of making a significant and original contribution to a discipline or profession.

To be eligible for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy – Integrated, applicants must:

• have successfully completed the Master of Research at Swinburne with a minimum H2A average (70% or higher) 
• have a confirmation of Candidature Review.

English language requirements (international applicants)

International candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

• a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0 or a TOEFL iBT (internet-based) minimum score of 79 (with a reading band no less than 18 and writing band no less than 20) 
• a minimum Pearson (PTE) 58 (no communicative skills less than 50) no more than 24 months before submitting your application 
• satisfactory completion of Swinburne’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP 5 Advanced level) with overall 70%, all skills 65% 
• successful completion of a total of 24 months (full time equivalent) of formal study where the language of instruction and assessment was English at AQF level 7 or above (or equivalent) at an approved university no longer than 60 months before submitting your application.

Partnered PhD programs

A Partnered PhD program allows you to jointly enrol and be supervised at Swinburne and an international partner university.

Accepted English language qualifications

We accept a wide range of international English qualifications and English language tests.

If you have already met our English language entry requirements for your programme at the time you apply, your application may be considered more competitive in selection than applications where you still need to take an English language test. 

Degrees taught and assessed in English

We accept an undergraduate degree, PGCE , PGDE or postgraduate degree, including a one-year Masters degree, that has been taught and assessed in English, either:

• In a majority English speaking country, as defined by UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI).

UKVI Majority English speaking countries

• On our list of approved universities in non-majority English speaking countries.

Approved universities in non-majority English speaking countries

If you are not a national of a majority English speaking country, then your degree must be no more than five years old at the start of the month in which your programme of study begins.

Degrees supported by school qualifications

You may also meet our English language entry requirement if you can provide evidence of the following: 

You have a school qualification which meets our English language entry requirements for undergraduate study; AND 

You began a degree within three and a half years of achieving your school qualification, which was taught and assessed in English at a recognised university not otherwise accepted for English language purposes; AND 

That you successfully completed that degree within five years old of the start of the month in which your programme of study begins. 

Evidence that your degree was taught and assessed in English should be in the form of a letter from the awarding university. 

Undergraduate English language entry requirements  

If you have transferred from a university where teaching and assessment are conducted in a language other than English to a university in a majority English speaking country, or to an approved university in a non-majority English speaking country, at least 50% of your studies must have been undertaken in English, including your final year of study.

Degrees from UK universities with campuses overseas

We do not accept degrees awarded by UK universities where all study has taken place at an overseas campus in a non-majority English speaking country, unless they are on the list of approved universities.

Degrees jointly awarded by the University of Edinburgh

We accept degrees jointly awarded by the University of Edinburgh with partner universities in non-majority English speaking countries where teaching and assessment are conducted in English, even if the partner universities are not on the list of approved universities.

Degrees awarded by the Open University

We accept degrees awarded by the Open University to meet our academic English requirement, when they are offered by nationals of a majority English speaking country, as defined by UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI).

We do not accept degrees awarded by the Open University to meet visa English requirements.

Other qualifications and tests

We also accept a wide range of international English qualifications and English language tests.

The qualifications we accept meet both our English language proficiency requirements and the minimum standards for Student route visas.

Expiry of qualifications

Academic achievement.

A PhD at Imperial College London is a demanding academic qualification. We therefore look for evidence of strong and consistent academic performance and expect applicants to have high grades at undergraduate and Master’s level, including a strong dissertation.

From graduates of UK institutions, this would normally equate to a combination of at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree at undergraduate level and a Master’s degree awarded with Merit or Distinction. Please see the  College Country index  for the international equivalent of these qualifications, though please bear in mind that the Business School may ask for higher grades than the College minimum.

In exceptional circumstances, we will consider candidates holding a strong First Class Honours undergraduate degree, without a Master’s, if accompanied by very strong academic references and outstanding CV and personal statement.

What to expect – pre-requisite knowledge and training

As a PhD graduate of Imperial College Business School, you will be expected to have a solid foundation in quantitative research methods, understand the breadth of your research area and have in depth knowledge of your specific field demonstrated through your own original research. Graduates who are working in primarily qualitative fields are still expected to undertake core quantitative methods training.

To be able to succeed in the formal courses, as a minimum, you should have knowledge of:

Topics include functions, limits and continuity, differentiation, applications of the derivative, curve sketching, and integration theory, methods of integration, applications of the integral, Taylor’s theorem, infinite sequences and series.

Matrix Theory/Linear Algebra

Topics include matrix algebra, systems of linear equations, determinants, vector algebra and geometry, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, vector spaces, subspaces, bases, and dimension, linear transformations, representation by matrices, nullity, rank, diagonalization, inner products, adjoints, unitary, and orthogonal transformations.

Topics include fundamentals of probability theory, confidence intervals, and tests of hypothesis for normal distributions, one- and two-sample tests and associated confidence intervals for means and proportions, analysis of variance, F-tests, correlation, regression, contingency tables, and statistical analysis using the computer.

Data analysis and programming

During your courses and research, you will use a variety of analysis tools and programming languages, including R, STATA, MATLAB, Python – applicants who are not confident with programming should learn before enrolling. There are many open online courses available that make it feasible to learn. This  Data School  web page gives a good round up of some available resources as a starting point.

• Statement of purpose

One of the most important parts of our application form is the Statement of Purpose section. Although you are not expected to have your whole thesis planned at this stage, it is important to articulate your knowledge and ideas. It should include the following:

• Your motivation for undertaking the MRes and PhD
• A discussion of possible research areas that you might pursue
• Business School faculty you have identified that align with your research interests
• What interests you most about your chosen field of study

GMAT or GRE requirement

A GMAT or GRE score is a compulsory requirement to be considered for entry into the Doctoral programme at Imperial College Business School. This GMAT/GRE score must be submitted before we will consider an application. Please note that we do not make offers on the condition that a candidate achieves a satisfactory GMAT/GRE score.

There are only a few test dates per year in some countries or testing centres. It is highly recommended that applicants arrange a GMAT or GRE test at the earliest possible opportunity to ensure that they can submit a timely application.

All applicants are free to take either test and we understand that there are some countries where only one of these tests is available.

We expect applicants to have obtained strong scores across all elements of the exam. We consider strong scores to be in the 90th percentile or higher in either test.

For the GMAT Exam , our preferred total score is 700 or above. From the different test elements, scores in the 90th percentile roughly equate to: 50/60 in quantitative reasoning, 39/60 in verbal reasoning, 6/6 in analytical writing and 8/8 in integrated reasoning.

We also accept the GMAT Focus Edition (available from 7 November 2023). If taking this test, our preferred total score is 655 or above. We would also be looking to see scores in the 90th percentile in the Data Insights, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning components. Scores are valid for five years from your appointment date. 

From the different test elements, scores in the 90th percentile roughly equate to: 165/170 in quantitative reasoning, 163/170 in verbal reasoning and 5/6 in analytical writing.

English language requirement

All Doctoral students must meet our English language entry requirements. If you have a degree taught in English within the following countries, you meet the English requirement automatically: Australia, Canada, Guyana, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America, West Indies. This applies only to degrees that were studied entirely and awarded in the relevant country.

Most applicants meet the requirement in one of the following ways:

IELTS (academic): A minimum score of 7.0 with minimum scores of 6.5 in all elements.  The IELTS indicator test will be accepted for admissions to the 2023/24 academic year.

TOEFL iBT: A minimum score of 100 overall with minimum scores of 22 in all elements.  The ETS at Home test will be accepted for admission to the 2023/24 academic year.

• Duolingo English Test: 125 Overall with no less than 115 in any band score.
• IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo scores are only valid if they are less than two years old on the programme start date
• TOEFL: You must meet the entry requirement in one test from your scaled scores ( ‘My Best Scores’ reported by TOEFL will not be considered ). For more information regarding TOEFL please visit the  ETS website . Please note if you would like ETS to send your TOEFL scores directly to the College, our TOEFL Institution Code is 0891.

Applications are made through our online application system, which gives you the flexibility to complete your application in your own time and save your progress. The form includes questions about you and your educational history to date.

If you wish to be considered for the Doctoral programme, please follow the steps below:

• Start a new application and search for “Business”. Select either Business (MRes 1YFT) or (MRes 2YFT) depending on which pathway you wish to apply for.
• Applicants applying for the Marketing or Analytics and Operations pathways will need to select Business (MRes 1YFT). Applicants applying for the Economics and Public Policy, Finance, Strategy and Organisational Behaviour or Innovation and Entrepreneurship pathways will need to choose Business (MRes 2YFT). You must only select Business [LISS DTP 1+3] (MRes 1YFT) if you are also planning on completing a LISS Case for Support.
• Once you have chosen either the Business (MRes 1YFT) or Business (MRes 2YFT) programme, you will need to select which pathway you wish to be considered for based on your research area of interest.
• You will also need to provide a brief outline of your primary research interest and indicate a potential supervisor.

Once you have submitted your application form, you will need to upload the following supporting information to complete your application in time for the application deadline you want to be considered by.

• Current resume/CV
• Complete degree transcripts
• Contact details of two academic referees
• GMAT/GRE test scores: you should have sat and have a valid test score that meets our requirements at the point of entry
• Evidence of English language qualification

It’s essential we receive your supporting documents  and  reference information before midnight (UK time) on Monday 8 January 2024.  Until we have received all the necessary documents, your application will not be complete and will not be processed.

Once the following information is uploaded, the Doctoral Admissions Team will assess your application and you will be contacted if any additional documents are required. Complete applications will then be considered by the Academic Selection Committee. Applications submitted without a GMAT or GRE score or without references will be considered incomplete and will not be considered.

If you are shortlisted by the Academic Selection Committee, you will be invited to an interview with a panel of faculty before a final decision is made. In the case of overseas candidates, we will arrange an interview by telephone or via Skype. 

Shortlisted candidates will normally be invited to interview by Friday 1 March 2024 at the latest.

Admissions decision

You will be notified of your application result by email as soon as possible after your interview. Following this, you will receive official notification via your Imperial Gateway account from the College Registry team. If you have been granted a place on the programme the official offer notification will let you know of any conditions that you need to complete to take up your place.

Funding your PhD

We offer a funded Doctoral programme at the Business School. This includes a full tuition fee waiver (Home/EU or Overseas fees) plus a living stipend for up to five years through the Business School Graduate Teaching Assistant Scholarship. Funding for a sixth year can be considered on a case-by-case basis, with the potential to undertake a teaching or research assistant studentship with one of the Business Schools research centres.

Some of our scholarship funding comes from EPSRC and ESRC for candidates who meet Research Councils UK’s academic and residential eligibility conditions. During the MRes you will have a discussion with our team to find out whether you are eligible to move onto any of these awards.

How do i apply and what documents do i need to submit with my application.

All applications to the Doctoral programme are made via our online platform. You will either need to select 'Business (MRes 1YFT)' or 'Business (MRes 2YFT)' based on your research area of interest. Further information can be found on our  Doctoral programme page .

What do I need to include in my statement of purpose?

One of the most important parts of our application form is the ‘statement of purpose’ section. It should be no more than one or two A4 pages and should cover the following points:

• A discussion of possible research areas that you might pursue and how these are a good fit for Imperial College Business School
• Relevant past study, industry, or research projects

Long-term career goals

I haven’t decided what area I want to specialise in for my PhD, what should I do?

You should browse the description of the different research groups in the Business School and the webpages of faculty members. This will give an overview of their research interests and current projects. The MRes gives you an opportunity to pursue potential interests through courses and a project prior to committing to the PhD.

Do I need a willing supervisor prior to application?

No, although in your application you should list a member of faculty you have identified as a potential supervisor. You can demonstrate in your statement of purpose how your research interests are aligned to a potential supervisor and the Business School.

Checking the research profiles of faculty members and Business School projects will give you an indication of whether the Business School is a good fit for you. If no faculty are working in your area of interest it is unlikely that you would be shortlisted, as we may not be able to provide supervisory support during your PhD.

During the MRes year, you will become part of the research community at Imperial College Business School and interact with faculty and other PhD students during taught courses and at seminars, which we hope will influence and help shape your research ideas for the PhD.

Are all applicants interviewed?

Not all applications progress to the interview stage of the selection process, however we interview all shortlisted candidates before making an offer. In the case of overseas candidates we will arrange an interview by telephone or via Skype.

Is GMAT/GRE a compulsory requirement?

Yes. A GMAT/GRE score must be submitted before we will consider an application. Any applications submitted without a GMAT/GRE score will be considered incomplete until we receive a score. Do you offer Doctoral funding and stipend?

We offer a fully funded Doctoral programme at Imperial College Business School – this includes a tuition fee waiver and a stipend for up to five years. The 2024-25 rate of the Graduate Teaching Assistant scholarship stipend is £25,000. Rates are reviewed annually and are expected to increase for 2025-26 in line with Research Council UK rates. Stipends are tax-free and the continuation of the stipend will depend on your satisfactory progress on the programme.

What living costs should I allow for in London?

Living costs vary considerably depending on the area of London you choose to live in and your choice of accommodation.

Do you offer Doctoral scholarships?

Within Imperial, we also have funding opportunities from various external studentships, including EPSRC, ESRC, and the Imperial College President’s PhD Scholarships .

Students who are eligible for other PhD  funding opportunities  that may be available to them are expected to apply for them.

How long does it take to complete the Doctoral Programme?

The Doctoral programme is structured to take between four to six years full-time. In the first year, all students undertake a one or two year MRes programme depending on their chosen research area specialism. Subject to satisfactory academic progress, students then progress to the PhD which takes between 3-4 years.

When does the academic year start?

The Doctoral programme has one intake each year in September and is spread over four to six years.

Do you offer any distance learning or part-time research programmes?

It is not possible to enrol on the Doctoral programme on a part-time or distance learning basis. Students must be in attendance throughout the full period of study.

Can I transfer from my current Doctoral programme to Imperial College Business School's Doctoral programme?

It is not usually possible to transfer onto the Doctoral programme as it is unlikely that previous studies would perfectly overlap with the School’s expertise.

Can I come to Imperial College Business School as a visiting student?

Imperial College Business School does not accept visiting student applications. On rare occasions students are invited to visit by an academic and are dealt with individually.

Can I have a part-time job whilst enrolled in the programme?

The Doctoral programme is full time. Students are able to undertake part-time work if this does not break any relevant visa and/or scholarship conditions, however the programme offers a living stipend to support students during their studies.

How many students do you accept onto the Doctoral programme every year?

Admission onto the Doctoral programme is highly competitive as we accept around 15 students each year, from a total of approximately 200 applications.

Is there a workspace assigned to Doctoral students?

There is a designated workspace which includes a computer and relevant software assigned to all enrolled Doctoral students. You will share working space with other PhD students in your cohort.

When will I receive my official offer?

When the Business School recommends an offer, the College Registry team will perform a final review of your application to make sure that all College entry requirements are met before making an official offer. This process can take up to three weeks from Business School recommendation.

Do I need to pay a deposit to secure my place?

No. This is not required as all places on the Doctoral Programme come with full funding.

How do I show that I’ve met the academic condition of my offer?

You will receive an email detailing what you are required to submit and where you need to submit relevant documents.

How do I show that I’ve met the English language condition of my offer?

IELTS and TOEFL certificates should be scanned and emailed to  [email protected] . If you have not yet received your certificates, you can email your IELTS Test Report Number or TOEFL 16 digit registration number to the Registry team.

If you have completed the Pearson Test of Academic English, please ensure you have sent your scores to Imperial via your  PearsonPTE account.

If you have completed another one of Imperial’s accepted English language qualifications, you will need to post the original, physical document to the Registry team to support this qualification. You will receive an email with more information and the address that the document will need to be posted to.

How do I find the Business School?

The following requirement are needed to start a PhD at Wageningen University & Research (WUR):

Proof of Funding, including tuition fees

For a candidate to be able to start a PhD at Wageningen University & Research funding must be guaranteed.

For the period between 1 January 2024 and 30 June 2024, Scholarship PhD candidates will only be accepted to the Wageningen PhD programme in case they have a:

- scholarship with a living allowance that is sufficient for the whole PhD trajectory (for candidates starting between 1 January 2024 and 30 June 2024 this amount is EUR 1750,- per month), O R

- scholarship with a monthly living allowance equivalent to the ind budget threshold (eur 1564,47 from 1 january 2024 to 30 june 2024 - see dutch government immigration website ) and guaranteed future adherence to the ind budget threshold. this should be laid down in an agreement between the scholarship phd candidate and the scholarship provider., moreover, funds for research and possibly tuition fees are applicable. below the tuition fees for the different phd categories are listed. these fees are to cover an office space, working facilities, access to the library and a wageningen university & research ict account., master's degree.

The candidate must have obtained a master’s degree that is comparable to a Dutch MSc. This is evaluated by NUFFIC, the Dutch organisation for internationalisation in education. Hence, accredited master’s degrees obtained in the Netherlands are automatically recognised. See “ Required documents ” for details on documents that must be submitted depending on where the candidate obtained the master’s degree.

When a master’s degree is not recognised by NUFFIC, as equivalent to a Dutch master's, a Qualifying Exam (QE) may be required. If a qualifying exam is required, this will be indicated by PhD Services. The content is determined by the promoter in consultation with the candidate, in accordance with the rules for QE. These rules are stated in the Doctorate Regulations, which are determined by the Academic Board of Wageningen University & Research. Note that this QE exam is not part of the Training and Education Programme as formulated in the Training and Supervision Plan (TSP). The QE must be obtained within the first year of the PhD project.

Language requirements

In order to be admitted to the PhD program, the PhD candidate must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the English language, as well as the Dutch language when the thesis is written in Dutch, at the level established by the Academic Board.

English language proficiency

There are no language requirements when the PhD candidate:

• has completed a master degree at a Dutch University;
• comes from an English speaking country and/or;
• has completed a higher education with English as the main language of instruction.

There are language requirements when the PhD candidate:

• does not have a master degree at a Dutch University;
• does not come from an English speaking country and/or;
• has not completed a higher education with English as the main language of instruction.

When the PhD candidate has language requirements to be met, an internationally recognized Certificate of Proficiency in the English language must be submitted.

This must be done prior to the registration at the graduate school and the test results may not be older than 24 months at the moment of application.

Note: a PhD candidate cannot be registered in the Hora Finita without meeting the language requirements. Hora Finita is the PhD registration system of Wageningen University & Research.

Doctoral entry requirements

You must have completed a significant research project such as a dissertation or thesis, at university level. You need to have completed a postgraduate bachelors (honours) degree with a University of Auckland equivalent B+ grade, or a masters degree with a University of Auckland equivalent B+ grade in a relevant field.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is available in approximately 100 subjects. Named doctorates are available in Clinical Psychology, Education, Fine Arts, Health Science, and Medicine.

Supervision and research requirements

Meeting our academic requirements does not guarantee entry. You must demonstrate an ability to research independently, and possess a high level of theoretical understanding. Acceptance is subject to staff availability for supervision, and appropriate facilities.

Named doctorate requirements

Doctor of Clinical Psychology is   restricted to New Zealand and Australian citizens and residents, and has a limited number of places each year.

Doctor of Education  requires at least two years' professional experience in education or in another professional area considered comparable by the Board of Graduate Studies.This programme must be started part-time, and as a result is only available to New Zealand and Australian citizens and residents.

Doctor of Medicine  requires a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, or equivalent medical degree, and at least five years experience in medical practice.

Doctor of Health Sciences must be started part-time, and as a result is only available to New Zealand and Australian citizens and residents.

• obtained a recognized professional qualification 4 , provided that the examination was conducted in English.
• This is based on the understanding that English is the medium of instruction of degree programmes offered by universities in Hong Kong. Moreover, graduates from universities in Hong Kong should have fulfilled the English language requirements of the institution concerned when they were admitted to the degree programmes. The CUHK Graduate School may request applicants to provide additional supporting documents to prove their English proficiency.
• TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years from the test date. GMAT scores are considered valid for five years from the test date.
• GMAT (Verbal) Score with a threshold of 21 will be kept until the score validity phases out.
• The programmes/Graduate Divisions shall at their discretion to determine if such professional qualification can be accepted.

Undergraduate degrees

Minimum qualifications include:

• IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Academic or IELTS for UKVI (United Kingdom Visas and Immigration) (Academic)  taken at a test centre with 6.0 overall and no less than 5.5 in each component skill. Please note that we cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study. You must meet the requirements through a single IELTS test, or via a single test and One Skill Retake. We do not accept IELTS Indicator.
• TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test)  taken at a test centre with 80 overall and no less than 17 in listening, 18 in reading, 20 in speaking and 19 in writing. Please note that we do not accept TOEFL MyBest scores and we expect candidates to have met the relevant requirements from a single TOEFL test. We cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study. We do not accept the TOEFL iBT Home Edition or the TOEFL iBT Paper Edition.
• PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic or PTE Academic UKVI   taken at a test centre with 60 overall and no less than 59 in any component. Please note that we cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study. We do not accept PTE Academic Online.
• LanguageCert Academic  or LanguageCert Academic SELT (Secure English Language Test) taken at a test centre with 65 overall and no less than 60 in each component skill. Please note that we cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study.
• A suitable  Cambridge English  qualification with at least 169 overall and no less than 162 in any component. B2 First is the most relevant to these scores but we also accept C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency.
• Trinity College London ISE (Integrated Skills in English)   at a Pass in ISE II or above (if taken in the UK). Please note that we cannot accept results from this test that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study.
• NCUK English Language Test  at 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any component. Please note that this qualification is no longer offered but we can accept existing results as long as they will be no more than two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study.
• NCUK English for Academic Purposes (EAP)  at C overall with no component less than D. Please note that we cannot usually accept results from this test that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study.
• NCUK English for Academic Purposes for Proficient Users (EAPPU)  at C overall with no component less than D. Please note that we cannot usually accept results from this test that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study.
• Study Group Academic English Skills (AES) at 60% overall with no component score less than 50%.
• GCSE English Language or IGCSE English as a First or Second Language at C/4. GCSE English Literature may be considered in certain circumstances for some courses.
• A Level or AS Level English Language or English Literature  at C.
• National 5 English at C.
• Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher English Language or English Literature  at C.
• AP (Advanced Placement)   English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition  at 3.
• IB (International Baccalaureate) English (standard or higher level) at 4.
• A minimum of two years of study in the UK to complete an undergraduate degree.
• Overseas doctors who are registered with the NHS (please note that this may not apply for courses with higher requirements).
• We might also accept an English language qualification from your country, which you can find among our admissions qualifications .

Masters degrees

• LanguageCert Academic  or LanguageCert Academic SELT (Secure English Language Test) taken at a test centre with 70 overall and no less than 65 in each component skill. Please note that we cannot accept results from these tests that are over two years old at the start date of the course you intend to study.
• A suitable  Cambridge English  qualification with at least 176 overall and no less than 169 in any component. B2 First and C1 Advanced are most relevant to these scores but we also accept C2 Proficiency.

Candidates must fit a general profile and meet a set of minimum requirements regarding their diploma and English proficiency to be considered for acceptance. The same assessment criteria hold for all students and are applied fairly and impartially.

Diploma and Grade Transcript

Applicants must have a Dutch high school diploma at VWO level (any profile) or a foreign equivalent and they must meet the grade entry requirements. You can verify whether your diploma fulfills this requirement on the Diploma and English proficiency requirements document .

If you do not meet the grade entry requirements, an alternative route to become eligible to apply is to complete one year of university (in an academic subject) with a grade average of at least 70% at a 3-year university OR at least 80% or a 3.5 GPA at a 4, 5, or 6-year university programme.

Proof of English Proficiency

If you do not meet the requirements listed within the diploma equivalency and English proficiency requirements document , one of the tests indicated below will provide proof of English proficiency. The tests should not be more than 2 years old at the time of submitting the application.

We advise to take the English Proficiency test at least 2 months before the application deadline. For your application to be complete and considered, all documents, including proof of your English proficiency, must be uploaded before the application deadline.  To treat all candidates equally, we cannot make exceptions. Your English proficiency results need to be in form of an official certificate or you need to authorize UCU to verify your results online. Incomplete applications cannot be considered and will be rendered inactive.

Accepted are the IELTS test, TOEFL IBT test, the C1 Advanced and the C2 Proficiency:

PTE Academic 69 (with minimum scores of 61 in each component).

UK Pass with merit Master degree (or its equivalent) in a relevant subject

– Media and Communication: IELTS7.0, no band below 6.5; – English: IELTS 7.0, no band below 7

– UK first or 2:1 class Bachelor degree with Honours – Or UK Pass with Merit Master degree (or its equivalent) in a relevant discipline, such as anthropology, medicine, psychology or sociology

Minimum Requirement(Public Health PhD) : IELTS 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each component)

Minimum entry requirement

English language requirement

All students applying to PhD programme must demonstrate that they are competent in the use of the English language and satisfy the University’s requirements. You should normally possess an appropriate IELTS, or equivalent score as listed on University of Liverpool webpage. Please note this is only valid for two years from the test report date to the start date of the programme.

*We do not accept MyBest Scores of TOEFL iBT or a combination of test scores taken at different times for any accepted English proficiency tests.

You will qualify for an exemption from the English language requirement if one of the following applies to you:
