What should I do after I have my first draft?

After you have completed the first draft of your computer science personal statement, you should follow these steps to edit, polish, and finalize your computer science personal statement:

Today, we are looking through a Computer Science applicant’s Personal Statement that helped secure a place at Oxford University. The Computer Science Course at Oxford is about understanding computer systems and networks at a deep level. Example Computer Science Personal Statement

My first experiences with mathematics throughout school were always enjoyable but not inspiring. While I loved working with maths, and enjoyed representing our school in both the UKMT and Hans Woyda team competitions, I felt that maths could not be the end-in-itself the school syllabus presented it as. As I progressed through secondary education, however, I began to really see it as the powerful tool to understand and structure reality that it is.

The first time I saw that my interpretation of the use of maths had some substance was during a work experience placement I organised at IMSO (International Mobile Satellite Organization). There I encountered some examples of the mathematical and computing problems involved in working with satellites: from the difference between the Euclidean geometry on a map and the Elliptical geometry on a globe, to the logistics of moving satellites around to meet demand while keeping them in orbit. These were problems that demanded much more than mere number crunching, and being exposed to this gave me a taste of what maths beyond school might involve. A second work experience spell at Siemens provided me a much more in-depth view of the important role that communication systems play in keeping a company running efficiently and effectively.

My passion for mathematics and computing was further extended while reading ‘The Magical Maze’ by Ian Stewart. The description of maths as the exploration of a maze of our own creation had an incredibly profound effect on my understanding of what research in mathematics involves. What interested me especially was the visual part of resolving problems, so that they did not rely completely on resolving long calculations. This was close to how I like to understand and explain my ideas in mathematics.

Douglas Hofstadter’s ‘Gödel, Escher, Bach’ gave me a much deeper understanding of the axiomatic systems that make up maths and how parallels can be drawn between different subjects to gain a further understanding of them all. Connected by the theme of Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem, the author passes through seemingly unrelated topics, such as the problem of consciousness and the mathematics of Zen principles, to explain the theorem. Although not the focus of the book, I have also enjoyed reading the links that are presented between maths and computing; it seems to me that maths is not just related to computing – computing is the physical manifestation of mathematics.

Maths and computing are about describing mental processes in a precise, logical way. The rigour required for mathematical proof leaves little room for subjectivity: something can be proven, disproven or unproven, but this depends completely on the validity of your logic. The idea of being able to extract order from apparent chaos, working through concepts until they click is what I love about these subjects, and what has attracted me to take those as an integral part of my further education.

However passionate I am about my academic studies, I also enjoy being involved in extracurricular activities. As head of mentoring and a prefect, I have improved my organizational abilities working with staff and mentors in developing study programmes for those students requiring extra help. Completing the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award – now working on the silver award – has allowed me to practice and develop my leadership and teamwork skills.

In my spare time I enjoy playing tennis, skiing and swimming; the latter I practice at competition level. I also love travelling, as having spent my childhood in Denmark, Egypt, United Kingdom and Spain has given me a hunger for mixing with different cultures. I like to unwind by playing the piano – I find that the pleasure one derives from making a piece your own is one that few activities can match.

I am thrilled about the prospect of further study in these subjects with some of the leading professors in the fields, and look forward to participating in university life.

This is a well-written, structured statement. The student explains their reasons to pursue a dual-honours degree and gives equal attention to both disciplines to which they are applying. The student adds personality to the statement by thoroughly explaining their own views on all of the examples of literature read around maths and computing.

Bad Points Of The Personal Statement

There are quite a lot of short paragraphs. The student could have saved space by consolidating some paragraphs into one, hence shortening the statement. The student starts three paragraphs with ‘My’ or ‘In my’. This is quite repetitive. There are too many paragraphs, seven in total. Paragraphs five and six could be shortened and grouped into one paragraph. In the third paragraph, it appears as though the student has either forgotten to add an addition space (in order to start a new paragraph) or has incorrectly started a new line for the sentence ‘Douglas Hofstadter’s…’.

This is a very good statement. The student has clearly achieved a lot and writes in a clear and easy-to-understand way. Attention is given to both maths and computer sciences, which is essential as the student is applying for a dual honours course. With some restructuring, this could be an excellent statement.

10 Top Tips for an Cambridge Computer Science Personal Statement

Your Cambridge personal statement is a crucial component in your university application. It gives you a chance to articulate why you’re interested in Computer Science at Cambridge and to distinguish yourself from other applicants. Additionally, it offers the Cambridge interviewer a focal point to base discussions about your personality, interests and deduce your commitment to the subject you’re applying for. This includes everything you should do and not do for your Oxbridge Computer Science Personal Statement for the 2024/25 application cycle.

All applicants for Computer Science (including applicants to mature Colleges) must take the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA). They should take this at an authorised assessment centre (usually your school or college), for which you register in advance. Find out more about this here .

At the University of Cambridge, in Years 1 and 2, assessment is currently by three-hour examinations taken in the final term of each year. In Year 3, students have coursework and three-hour examinations. Practical work is undertaken and assessed in all years of the degree programme.

Please note that successful Cambridge Computer Science applicants need to do some preparatory reading. They must also complete a pre-arrival online course before the start of the first term. Admissions tutors will send students details after their place is confirmed.

Your story will be what makes your UCAS personal statement unique. You should outline why you want to study Computer Science. Also include anecdotes indicative of your personality and hunger for the subject. This will be how you get the Cambridge admissions tutors to notice your university application. This is where you should note down relevant work experience, extra-curricular reading. You should also mention why you were interested in Computer Science in the first place, as well as what makes you suitable to study at Cambridge University. 

2. What makes you suitable

What distinguishes you from all other Cambridge applicants applying for Computer Science? Is there work experience, or extra-curricular work have you done that you can talk about that might set you apart from everyone else? It’s not enough to list achievements. Talk about what skills you have gained that will not only make you a suitable Computer Science student, but also a suitable Cambridge University student.

3. Read around the subject you’re applying for .

Podcasts, magazine articles, documentaries or research papers relating to the field of Computer Science are all great ways to engage with new content. Examples include the ‘ Spark with Nora Young ’ podcast. Click here for a concise reading list published by Cambridge. A good way to start is by picking a topic within the field of Computer Science that interests you. You can listen to or read the information to and from school or work. 

4. Proof read & read aloud your work .

Once you’re happy with the content of your draft, check it, check it and check it again! A good way to check your work would be to ask people to proofread it. Examples include a teacher in the Computer Science field, a current Cambridge student, or a student studying Computer Science who has already written a personal statement. Other people may be able to spot mistakes or improvements within your statement that you haven’t picked up on.

Why have YOU applied to Computer Science? What careers or opportunities will studying this degree present to you? Examples include data analyst, games designer, web designer, amongst more. Consider your ambitions and how you will benefit society. These examples include, but aren’t limited to, furthering technology in the future, and analysing data to reduce risk for a multitude of companies.

Top 5 things to AVOID for your Cambridge Computer Science Personal Statement

  • Writing a list of achievements – Avoid listing things for the sake of it. It will be better to pick some key points or experiences and expand on what you learnt from them. This will show the Cambridge admissions tutors that you have reflected on your experiences, and that you have some insight into what a career of Computer Science would entail.
  • Don’t write anything that isn’t true – Don’t exaggerate. Admissions tutors may ask you to provide evidence of your stated achievements. It will reflect badly on you if you are unable to answer questions at an interview because you have exaggerated certain experiences. Not only that, but it will make your personal statement appear less authentic.
  • Copy someone else’s personal statements – Don’t plagiarise. Do not copy someone else’s UCAS personal statement or use something you have found on the internet. UCAS uses software to check every personal statement for plagiarism. 
  • Not reflecting on or justifying your point – Write succinctly and explain points without repeating yourself. Don’t tell the Cambridge admissions tutors what they already know. Instead, expand on how you’ve acquired certain skills and why they’re important. Remember, quality is always better than quantity- it’s better to expand on a few points than to list every point you can without going into detail.
  •  Don’t sound unprofessional – Steer clear of slang, clichés and quotes. It will sound repetitive to Cambridge admissions tutors to hear about how students are “passionate” about their subject or that they have a “thirst for knowledge”. Write about your personal experience with your Computer Science journey, and allow the admissions tutors to do the rest.

Computer Science Personal Statement

Studying computer science is an exciting life-changing experience, offering me the opportunity to discover the important strategies, used in the computing sector. A strategy is extremely crucial to progress in computer science. What makes computer science so interesting is it has a huge impact on the entire World. In this digital age, every industry that exists requires a computer scientist. Problems with industries are often solved by computers. Resolving these issues requires people that can pay attention to detail and luckily I possess this skill. This suggests that my character is effortlessly suited to a career in computer science.

Currently, I am studying A levels in Maths, Economics and Chemistry. All these subjects have given me a strong knowledge foundation for a degree in computer science. Studying Maths has given me a logical way of addressing real-life problems. For example, using probability to predict the outcome of any situation. While studying Economics, my self-confidence and communication skills have flourished. Constantly having to convert my complex economics models into qualitative data and present it to my whole class. Chemistry has developed my research skills, which I believe will come in handy when studying in University.

For my year twelve work experience, I worked for a small laptop and computer repair business, where I helped fix the laptops and computers. I found it so fascinating and interesting to see computers work and how essential they are to individuals and businesses. I am a member of the Codeacademy and Udacity website and a frequent reader of the Computer World. Doing this allows me to improve my programming and coding skills, getting familiar with the programming language and keep up to date with current affairs in the computing world and gain knowledge from respected computer scientists. Recently, I attended a Computer Science taster course at London South Bank University . This taster course amplified my passion for studying Computer Science at University.

Helping out at Parents Evening and Open Days by registering and ushering the parents and providing tours around the school to parents and potential students who have taken a liking to the school. This provides clear evidence that I am a dedicated team player. Taking advantage of all opportunities that my sixth form provided.

I currently have a part-time job, working as a customer service assistant. Working in Waitrose is developing my numeracy skills through handling cash and balancing the tills at the end of the day to check we are meeting targets by carefully counting all the cash in the till. Spending time on the till has improved my computer skills.

In my leisure time, I enjoy swimming. Travelling is also a passion of mine, so far I have visited countries in Europe, Middle East , Asia and Africa. I plan on visiting different countries across the world as I am quite fond of exploring different cultures. I am a teaching assistant at the Sunday school in my church, my responsibilities are helping the teachers to plan lessons and managing the behaviour of the children. Trying my best to help others when I'm presented with an opportunity to. I peer mentor young students between the ages of eleven and fifteen. Giving me an opportunity to be a positive role model and develop and maintain relationships with the young students.

Computer science is essential as it plays a huge role in everybody's lives. I am excited to broaden my understanding of computer science. My experiences in life have shaped and prepared me to study Computer Science at University.

Provo • Their four-wheeled contraption had worked perfectly before reporters showed up, Utah Valley University students promised, as they tinkered with it at the Provo Airport.

The creation, a welded frame encased in two wooden compartments roughly the size of coffee tables and powered by two electric engines, was supposed to tow the Diamond DA40 XLT — a single-engine prop plane weighing around 2,500 pounds — hitched to it.

It worked for a minute during its public debut Friday, before a broken sprocket — the metal wheel over which engine chains run — immobilized the machine for the rest of the day. But it would likely be an easy fix, UVU professor and project mentor Brett Stone said, and what is engineering if not a series of problems to solve?

Someone else’s problem, the students chimed in — this is likely as far as they’ll take this project before handing it off to the next capstone class — but a solvable one. And if it works, this student-led invention could revolutionize the airport taxiing process.

This model was just the prototype, a culmination of a school year’s worth of work from UVU engineering and computer science seniors. When it works — which it had just this morning, students repeated — it will be able to tow airplanes to and from their gates, controlled remotely by airport ground crews, pilots and its own autonomous driving abilities.

The traditional taxiing process, Stone said, is noisy, dangerous and wasteful. It requires planes to burn precious fuel and asks tarmac employees to come dangerously close to the spinning blades of aircraft engines.

“Jet engines are meant to be at 30,000 feet,” Stone said. “They’re not meant to push things around on the ground. And so, the way engineers think, I guess, I was like, ‘There’s got to be a better way.’”

The goal is to build a “tug,” as the contraption is called, robust enough to taxi commercial jets — and bring it to market.

Aircraft tugs aren’t new — but fully electric, remote-controlled ones with the capacity to tow a commercial jet could be the industry’s next frontier. There’s a patent application pending for this specific model, Stone said, and future senior capstone classes will help scale it for commercial use. A commercial product could be ready in the next two years, Stone said.

“It’d be really cool to see it progress, to see it reach the full-size Boeing airline capacity,” said UVU graduating senior Kolby Hargett. “I think another year from now, [future students] can get started scaling it into something larger, now that the idea’s here and a lot of the ground work’s done.”

This was a first-of-its-kind collaboration between graduating seniors in UVU’s engineering and computer science departments. Engineers, like Ammon Traden, worked on the design and the mechanics. Computer scientists, like Cache Fulton and Riley Pinkham, figured out the software. Their combined skillset was what it took to turn Stone’s vision into a real, operable product.

“We were blessed that Kolby knows so much about electricity,” Traden said. “He helped us so much with this.”

It’s also the most ambitious capstone project UVU engineering students have undertaken, said professor and mentor Matt Jensen — and the most practical. Students will enter the job market with real-world experience and a demonstrable, physical product they can say they built from the ground up.

“While it’s not perfect, and obviously it did have its challenges today, I think just recognizing ... that they’re about to graduate and go into the industry, I feel very confident that they’ll be good engineers.”

And one day in the near future, the students imagine, they might get to sit on a plane being towed by something they helped create.

“Next, we’re going to come for the plane,” Fulton said.

Computer science personal statement example 61.

Despite an ever-widening scope of choice for the 21st century student, studying the nature of computer science means far more to me than an academic subject studied for a set number of hours a week. It is undoubtedly an ever influential and concrete foundation of the society we live in today.

A fascination into just how much society has begun to take the use of computing based technology for granted poses many perplexing questions. For example, in thirty years from now, how will the interaction between humans and computers have developed? Will we one day be able to communicate with computers in the same way we interact with humans?

It is questions such as this that have stimulated my interest to delve further into the world of computer science and greatly reinforced my belief that this is the right course for me.

As well as studying computing under the Access to Higher Education syllabus this year, a very big consumer of time has been the induction of the Raspberry Pi into my household, a small, single-board computer.

It has allowed me to delve into the basics of programming and has enabled me to take on projects ranging from setting up a home media server to building an Ad-blocking Wi-Fi access point.

These experiments have not only given me insight into what it's like to work on a computer related project and helped to develop my problem solving and researching skills, but also made me realise just how much I enjoy the challenge of being presented with a problem that cannot just be solved with one solution, but many.

Furthermore, I have a great interest in mathematics and feel that my continued studies in computing and maths together has helped to develop my understanding of the most basic, but arguably also the most important concepts of computer science.

It is as such that my recent studies of maths have shown me how to apply equations and formulae into the world of computing, particularly the use of algebra and geometric progression.

This has allowed me to become more adept and reinforce my ability to tackle things in an organised, logical and precise manner. I believe that it is skills such as these that lay down the foundations of being a successful student.

After I finished school I worked within the restaurant industry as a waiter. Working full-time in a real world environment enabled me to enhance a number of different transferable skills. Interaction with my colleagues and customers allowed me to advance my communication skills and use my initiative to the best of my ability in order to deal with many different customer problems.

Returning to college in preparation for higher education after having worked for a few years has allowed me to better apply myself in things such as teamwork, and use the resources and skills I have gained as effectively as possible to support a career within computer science.

Along with my studies at college, I have an interest in music and have played the guitar from the age of eleven. This passion inspired me to commence guitar teaching, where I taught at my local music shop on a one to one basis for two years. I enjoy travelling and spent the summer of 2014 travelling Europe alone.

During my travels I had the opportunity to work as a receptionist and tour guide at a youth hostel in Prague for 3 months. During this time I met people from all over the world which helped to develop my understanding of different cultures.

I hope that this personal statement supports my application and demonstrates that I am a hard-working and passionate student with a keen interest in computer science. I look forward to experiencing and contributing to all aspects of university life.
