Study Online Through UP

UPOnline offers a future-focussed approach to learning, with a growing number of part-time, fully online postgraduate programmes, to make quality education accessible to a wider student audience. Completing your accredited qualification from a top university, means you don’t need to travel to classes or pay for extra accommodation. Online studies provide you with the freedom to continue your education and your normal employment. The online modules allow you to study anytime, anywhere, and on any device with the support and motivation of call centre staff and online facilitators. A further benefit of enrolling for a UPOnline programme is that you only need to pay for one module at a time.

Quality Education

This is an entirely new mode of teaching at the University. Students in a traditional setting register once a year for four or five modules that must be taken concurrently. In the online model, we take in new students every eight/sixteen weeks, with six intakes a year. You will, therefore, enrol for a single module at a time and only pay for the module that you are busy with. You will be assessed continuously throughout the module, accumulating your grades as you progress. At the end of the 8 (or 16) week module, upon successful completion, you will register and pay for your next module.

The quality of, and recognition for the fully online qualifications, is the same as with all other UP offerings, in the traditional face-to-face/contact mode of delivery. Since all of UP’s academic programmes are accredited by the Council for Higher Education (CHE), the same rigorous process applies to the online programmes. The benefit of the fully online study option is that students are not required to attend lectures or write exams on campus. Students can conduct their studies online from anywhere, and engage in diverse assessment opportunities throughout the module such as projects, assignments, quizzes, discussion forums, and journals.

What is unique about UPOnline offerings?

You can expect a number of unique features when you enrol in a UPOnline programme.

• In a UPOnline programme, there is no physical face-to-face component, although there could be a virtual face-to-face contact. All interactions with staff and students, educational content, learning activities, assessment, and support services are integrated and take place online.
• Online programmes allow access to programme material on any device provided that a stable internet connection is available.
• Whilst certain online programmes are offered on a full-time basis, the most are offered part-time.
• The online programmes are structured with 6 enrolment opportunities per year.
• You enrol for a single module at a time. Modules are either 7 or 14 weeks in duration.
• Throughout the year modules are structured as 7 weeks of learning, with 1 week recess in-between modules. At the end of the year there is an additional recess period.
• Payment can be made per module, or in full upfront.
• Coursework is offered semi-synchronously, meaning that you will do some parts of a module at your own pace, but others on a fixed schedule. Typically, new content and assignments are released on a weekly basis. Note, you may still connect synchronously in “real-time” via a virtual medium with your fellow students and online facilitators if there is a need to do so.
• In addition to the online facilitators, UPOnline programmes have dedicated call centre staff who motivate and support you with any queries you may have.
• UPOnline programmes have been designed to provide a highly engaging and interactive learning experience, through features such as interactive videos, discussion forums, drag and drop activities, check-your-knowledge quizzes, and much more.

Computer Literacy

The University of Pretoria makes use of Blackboard, branded as clickUP, which is an online system that acts as a virtual classroom. ClickUP contains your study material as well as a simple, convenient, and reliable web conferencing and virtual classroom solutions specifically built for education and training.

ClickUP is accessible via a web browser on any computing device, e.g. a laptop, tablet or smartphone, and a useful student guide is available. Students are required to have some technical and digital literacy skills before enrolling, such as the ability to:

• navigate the University’s eLearning environment (clickUP);
• use the email service in the learning management service (LMS), which is Blackboard and branded as clickUP;
• manage digital files – create, store, upload and attach files to assignment submissions using applications such as MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint and others;

Do I Qualify?

To be admitted to the Doctor of Philosophy in Theology, a candidate must have achieved an above-average grade in their Master’s degree. Additionally, a candidate must meet one of these admission requirements:

• An accredited Master’s degree in a theological field, with a substantial research project.
• An accredited Master’s degree in another field, with a substantial research project, accompanied by an accredited Bachelor Honours in Theology.

The PhD is a research degree that culminates in an original dissertation of 80,000–100,000 words. The learning journey is divided into five phases.

Phase 1 begins when you enrol. It consists of two online courses: GEN4121 Theological Orientation and MRS5240 Research Concept Development. Only outstanding candidates who achieve 75% or higher will be invited to proceed.

Phase 2 requires you to draft and submit a formal research proposal, which you do in consultation with your appointed supervisor, a scholar specialising in your research area. The phase ends when the SATS Research Committee approves your research proposal.

Phases 3–4 are where you conduct the research and write the dissertation, under the tutelage of your appointed supervisor.

Phase 5 is about examination! You submit your dissertation for internal and external examination, making the required improvements. You must also submit an article based on the thesis. The PhD journey culminates in the online oral defence. This takes place after the dissertation passes both the internal and external evaluation process. The student is required to defend his or her thesis by responding to questions posed by a team of experts in the chosen fields of study.

US Students

Admission requirements

• A cognate master’s degree by research only, passed with at least 60% or an equivalent grade that reflects a relevant standard of knowledge in a particular field as well as research competence
• A cognate master’s degree by course work and research, with the treatise or mini-dissertation passed with at least 60% or an equivalent grade. In addition, a pass of at least 60% or an equivalent grade should have been attained for each of the course work modules.
• Candidates who have completed their master’s degree by course work and treatise or mini-dissertation may be required to do and pass an approved research methodology module, at the appropriate level, with at least a 60% or an equivalent grade, should such a module not have been included in their learning programme.
• Candidates who have not met all of the criteria as outlined above, may apply for provisional registration for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and will be required to register for and pass, with at least 60% or an equivalent grade, a module or modules as recommended by the HOD for approval by the RTI Committee of the relevant School within the Faculty;

Conditions that apply

• Timeous application is required to allow for a thorough adjudication of applications.
• Applicants, as part of their application, need to present a preliminary proposal outlining the focus and nature of the intended research and their full CV.
• Upon application, candidates, who have not previously studied at Nelson Mandela University, will be required to submit an official, verified transcript of their academic record that, where applicable, includes the syllabus of each module passed in their preceding degree programme together with a copy of the research project, mini-dissertation or treatise.
• The acceptance of an application is subject to the availability of the implied supervisory capacity, both in terms of time and expertise.

International students who have completed previous qualifications in a language other than English must submit proof of English language proficiency reflecting minimum adequate scores as follows:

v  IELTS:6.5 minimum overall score with minimums of 6 in each                     section;

v  TOEFL:

• Paper-based (PBT) – 580 minimum overall score with minimums of 53 in listening, 52  in reading and 59  in structure/written;
• Computer-based (CBT): 237 minimum overall score with minimums of 19 in listening, 19 in reading and 25 in structure/written;
• Internet-based (IBT): 92 minimum overall score with minimums of 18 in listening, 17 in reading, 22 in writing and 22 in speaking.

The programme of study shall extend over a minimum period of two years and a maximum period of six years (General Rule G4.2 applies).

The research thesis is a substantial research piece of at least 100,000 words in the body of the dissertation, based on primary research conducted by the student with promoter provided. The research must make a significant contribution to the development studies discourse.

Learning Outcomes

Identify, design and conduct research in a relevant Development Studies area resulting in a research thesis. The knowledge you create should have relevance beyond a single case and contribute to a wider discourse, theory or debate in the field of Development Studies.  One peer-reviewed journal article.

The Cranefield PhD is a research degree, in the domain of commerce and administration (including project, programme, portfolio and value chain management), awarded on the basis of a doctoral thesis. The PhD degree is an accredited NQF Level 10 qualification.

Doctor of Philosophy Degree (PhD) entrance requirements

When considering an application for registration for the PhD in Project Management degree, the Doctoral Selection Committee shall be guided by the following admission requirements:

• An appropriate master’s degree; or
• Recognition of prior learning (RPL) that results in a level of research and subject-matter competencies that may be regarded as comparable to master’s level and sufficient to complete doctoral studies successfully. The appropriate level could, for instance, be evidenced by research articles published in refereed journals. Provision above must be read with existing Cranefield RPL policies.

Accreditation

The Cranefield Doctor of Philosophy degree is accredited at NQF level 10, with 360 credits, as reflected on the SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) website.

The Cranefield PhD is accredited by the Council on Higher Education NQF level 10, with 360 credits, and registered by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Distance Learning PhD Programs in South Africa

South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is a country located at the southern tip of Africa. It is divided into nine provinces. South Africa is not only a jumping off point, it is itself a fantastic destination rich in culture, fauna & flora and history.

The PhD is a doctoral degree, specifically called a "doctor of philosophy" degree. This is misleading because PhD holders are not necessarily philosophers (unless they earned their degree in philosophy!). That said, PhD recipients are able to engage in thought experiments, reason about problems, and solve problems in sophisticated ways.

Online or distance learning refers to the use of electronic media and information and communication technologies (ICT) in education. With online learning, one can access education at any time and from any location with an available internet connection.

PhD in Public Health (NQF Level 10)

The uwc school of public health (soph) welcomes your interest in its phd programme..

At present we are offering an academically oriented doctorate by thesis only, which implies a very large research project, either written up in a full thesis, or in a format of manuscripts with a beginning and ending sections forming part of the whole thesis. This work should contribute new and original knowledge to your chosen field. It usually takes between three and five years to complete your thesis, depending on the time you are able to commit to your research and writing. There is no course work or structured programme attached to the thesis but additional courses may be taken at any university of your choice as needed. Our programme is small, because we have a limited number of staff who can supervise PhD students. We assess every request on merit, based on the person’s CV and research experience, and if his or her project matches our areas of expertise.

Prospective candidates shall complete an Expression of Interest form in order to be considered for an invitation to apply for a PhD  at the School of Public Health, University of the Western Cape.

Cost Estimates

Course fees for the entire qualification (once-off) is approximately R R44 000 for South African citizens and International students with African Citizenship.  The fee for International students without African citizenship is approximately R100 000. All international students MUST pay the full tuition fee upfront at registration. An annual registration fee of approximately R1445 must be paid each year as well.  We do not have any regular on-going bursaries, although occasionally specific research projects will have funds available.

PhDs in Law can be done either purely in Law or through an interdisciplinary approach. Candidates for the PhD may qualify for admission if they have:

• a master’s degree
• an honours degree, or a four-year bachelor's degree, plus at least one year's registration for a masters degree
• a three-year bachelor's degree plus at least two years' registration for a masters degree
• an LLB or BProc degree (or qualification recognised by Senate as being the equivalent)
• in special circumstances, an approved bachelor's degree or qualification recognised by Senate as equivalent.

With experts in the Faculty in every field of Law  (see below), it is the prospective student's responsibility to find one of these experts at UCT Law Faculty who would be willing to supervise your PhD research. A doctoral thesis must always be a single treatise, and must serve make a contribution to the development of new knowledge in the field of Law. The thesis may not exceed 80 000 words in length, unless permission is given by the Dean, in consultation with the supervisor.

All doctoral degrees are administered partly by the Law Faculty and partly by the University’s Doctoral Degrees Board (DDB). The DDB has the final say in deciding whether to register candidates and what result is to be awarded for the examination. Successful applicants are given probationary registration for a period of six months, during which they must finalise their thesis/dissertation proposals under the guidance of their supervisors. In addition, they will be required to participate in a week-long preparatory course at the beginning of the academic year. At the end of the period of probationary registration, final thesis/dissertation proposals must be submitted for consideration by the Faculty’s Higher Degrees Committee.  This committee may then recommend entry into a doctoral or master’s programme. The deadline for submission of final thesis/ dissertation proposals is 15 August of your first year of registration.

Nicholas Otana is one of the latest Kenyan learners to entrust his higher learning education to Nexford University.He chose an American online university over Kenyan universities because he felt that Nexford was more technologically advanced and affordable.

Nicholas wanted to get a Nexford degree behind his name because he wanted to have a degree that concentrated on logistics. This was vital for him seeing as one of his businesses that he manages operates in that sector. Affordability is in our mission: we want you to access high-quality, online education, no matter where you live in the world. We are a mission-driven organization and a Public Benefit Organization (PBC). That means we're for-profit, but we prioritize public benefit every time.

Will employers in my country recognize programs offered by Nexford University?

• It should be accepted in the US as we are nationally accredited in the US by Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) . DEAC is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a recognized accrediting agency and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
• Acceptance of your credentials from NXU is still dependent on the receiving organization. It is the sole discretion of the receiving institution/employer whether or not they will accept the degree that you will get at any university.
• What we ensure is that you can stand out in a competitive job market. We utilize competency-based education to ensure you are able to apply your knowledge to real-world situations rather than just spending time memorizing theory. You'll have a capacity to adapt and pivot, and walk away with highly portable skills.

What's Nexford University's ranking?

Is Nexford University accredited?

Nexford University is  accredited  in the US by the  Distance Education Accrediting Commission  (DEAC), which is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a recognized accrediting agency and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) .

We're also licensed by the Higher Education Licensure Commission (HELC) in Washington DC, and our courses have been certified by Quality Matters (QM).

Does WES evaluate Nexford degrees?

WES will evaluate Nexford degrees, however they will not say they are equivalent to a Canadian degree because we are nationally accredited in the United States by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission ( DEAC ).   DEAC is recognized as an accrediting agency by both the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation ( CHEA ). Most schools in the U.S. and Canada will do their own credit evaluations.

Can I apply for an MBA if I don't have a university degree?

You'll need an undergraduate degree to apply for the MBA program. Nexford University accepts applications globally. We understand that your qualification may not specifically say that you hold a bachelor's degree in your country, but it may be equivalent to a US Bachelor's degree. We'll be happy to have your credential reviewed! Get in touch with our Admissions team to know if you are qualified: [email protected] However, your degree or qualification doesn't need to be in business. If you have a degree in another discipline, you'll take four 6-8 week Advanced Business Foundation courses. Here, you'll learn the baseline business skills you need for our broader MBA. Upon successful completion, start taking MBA core courses. If you have studied business before, you'll enter straight into the MBA and start taking your core courses.

What is the university experience at Nexford like?

Nexford's learning experience is unlike any other. Think engaging, interactive online learning that helps you gain the skills you need – fast.

Our online learning environment contains everything you need to learn at Nexford. It's where you'll take courses, chat with peers, submit assignments, receive feedback, track your grades, and access your faculty's calendars to book one-on-one sessions. It's also where you'll manage your enrollment, add courses, and pay your tuition.

You'll get access to your modules through Canvas, a learning management platform, and you can even take your learning wherever you go with the Canvas mobile app. Module materials include reading, videos, interactive elements, quizzes, and relevant case studies. 

Live lectures are done by faculty once every two weeks or more often. Don't worry, these sessions are entirely optional, and you don't have to wait for them to progress in your learning or course — everything you need to complete your projects, assignments, or assessments is available through your modules.

Assessments are weekly, and you must meet assessment and project deadlines to progress seamlessly. We recommend you allocate a minimum of 15-20 hours per week to your learning at your most convenient time to achieve this. If you need additional support, our Learner Success team is available 24/7. They will also help you with transitioning to online studies, creating your study timeline, and goal setting.

What's required for my application?

All applicants to Nexford’s MBA degree must provide proof that they completed a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution in a business-related field, or equivalent for international institutions, with a valid copy of their official diploma and transcript. If applicants are not able to provide these documents, they must submit an explanation in writing together with any supporting materials that might assist the university in certifying their graduate status. If you’ve graduated from an institution where the primary language of instruction was English, we will rely on your transcript to prove English proficiency. If your prior education was not in English, we’ll need to confirm English proficiency as part of our process to ensure you’re equipped to succeed at Nexford.
