Love or Money Movie Review: How’s Angelica Panganiban, Coco Martin’s Tandem?

Angelica panganiban and coco martin’s first onscreen partnership for “love or money”.

Love or Money Movie Review – The much-awaited movie of Angelica Panganiban and Coco Martin was finally released last March and here is a review of their onscreen partnership.

Inquirer entertainment editor Rito P. Asilo noted that this movie showed the tried and tested formula of Star Cinema when it comes to romantic-comedy films. Differences surrounding the main characters were pointed out such as their personalities and priorities in life that led to their conflicted love story and eventually, time gave them the opportunity to heal their wounds.

However, Asilo pointed out that these elements led to “disjointed progression”. From being a romantic-comedy, it somehow became a material frequently seen on teleseryes and that included a “hyperventilating kontrabida” and this shadowed over the supposed “kilig”.

Then, the columnist mentioned the “chemistry” between the two lead characters in a rom-com setup. “ Unfortunately, chemistry isn’t something you can manufacture at will, ” Asilo stated. The entertainment editor added that Angelica has many funny moments in Love or Money . This proved how versatile she is from doing comedy and can shift easily to a dramatic emotion.

For Coco, Asilo noted that the actor is who he does in his primetime series, someone who is ready “to beg, steal, borrow and, in Leon’s (Coco’s character) case, grovel at the feet of the other guy in the name of love. “

The columnist added added that viewers can focus on the gloss instead and the fact that the movie featured a beautiful place like Dubai in order to disregard the “formula-gone-wrong”.

“But a pretty picture with not much compelling tale or relatable insight to back it up is bound to overstay its welcome in no time. And “Love or Money” is no exception,” Asilo stressed.

‘Love or Money’: Fleeting thrills in glossy but tonally disjointed Coco-Angelica starrer

Mae Cruz Alviar’s “Love or Money” banks on the time-tested Star Cinema formula for glossy rom-coms to generate its instant likability. There’s the star-crossed couple who realizes that their love for each other far outweighs their incompatible traits and conflicting priorities, a forbidden romance framed by the sparkle of a picture-perfect foreign land teeming with flawed, but feisty Filipino migrant workers, a conflict that drives them to a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions, and, surprise, an epilogue that allows time to conveniently heal all wounds. Unfortunately, it’s also this string of formulaic elements that quickly weighs it down and gives away the production’s tonally disjointed progression. It goes from being a romantic comedy that pulls out all the crowd-pleasing stops, to that of a cautionary teleserye-channeling drama featuring a hyperventilating kontrabida and the downward-spiraling danger his larger-than-life presence brings. Naturally, this throws all the kilig out the window. But it certainly doesn’t help that the movie’s otherwise eventful pairing lacks the chemistry that should have made viewers rally behind their future together. Unfortunately, chemistry isn’t something you can manufacture at will.

Paths crossed

In the movie, Angelica portrays ambitious but brokenhearted Angel dela Serna, who crosses paths again with Leon (Coco Martin) three years after they figure in a one-night stand. While sparks did fly at the time, it was Leon’s relative poverty that scared Angel away.

It’s this mindset that soon thrusts Angel into a “life of convenience”—as a Ferrari-driving, events company-running CEO who lets her heart take the backseat in favor of a lap of luxury. This measure of affluence enables Angel to send her brother to La Salle and pay the medical bills of her wheelchair-bound mother (Teresa Loyzaga). But her “double duty” is no walk in the park: She is a businesswoman by day, and a kept mistress by night.

Leon, on the other hand, just wants a simple but financially comfortable life for his poultry-raising dad (Dante Rivero) and brothers. He would have everything he wanted if he could only win the quirky girl of his dreams and put up his own carinderia. Getting in the way of Leon and Angel’s star-crossed romance is Dubai-based businessman Enrique (Norm McLeod), a wealthy but married expat with an “eskandalosa” wife, who refuses to share Angel with other men. And why should he? After all, he pays for all her bills and “luho,” right?

Following their kwela flirtations, when Angel and Leon finally admit that they can’t live without the other, things quickly go south.

Coco Martin

The movie was something we eagerly anticipated because we’ve always enjoyed watching Angelica, the most versatile actress of her generation. She can switch from comedy to drama with ease and mixes them up just as easily. The actress has a number of funny moments, even if her character was written like a femme fatale just waiting for her comeuppance. And we didn’t expect anything less from her. Her unpredictable temperament makes her portrayals consistently appealing. However, even the actress doesn’t manage to let a line like “My butt ate my panty” fly—and, trust us, it sounds more in-your-face in Filipino.

Heart of gold

Coco is as Coco does in many of his mainstream offerings—the unabashed probinsyano (pun intended) with a heart of gold who’s willing to beg, steal, borrow and, in Leon’s case, grovel at the feet of the other guy in the name of l’amour. But as Charles de Leusse once said, “Who forgets himself in love remembers the future.” Aw, shucks.

It isn’t beyond Coco’s characterization of Leon to steal from Angel’s benefactor or smuggle contraband just to keep his debt-ridden sweetheart out of trouble—a predicament that can only be empathized by someone who thinks there’s justification for that.

If you feel short-changed by the story and execution of this “formula-gone-wrong” misfire, you can focus on its gloss instead and just enjoy Dubai’s eye-candy grandeur. But a pretty picture with not much compelling tale or relatable insight to back it up is bound to overstay its welcome in no time. And “Love or Money” is no exception. INQ

The new romantic comedy from the Philippines, “Love or Money,” is now out on iWantTFC.  This one stars Angelica Panganiban and Coco Martin, making their first movie together, as a would-be couple who must choose between romance and financial freedom.  So, is “Love or Money” worth your love and money?  Here’s my review from The Filipino Channel’s Balitang America :

"For Love or Money" stars Michael J. Fox , one of the most likable stars in the movies, in a romantic comedy so lightweight that his charm has to carry the whole enterprise. Take away the basic human appeal of Fox and his love interest, Gabrielle Anwar , and what you have left wouldn't fuel 22 minutes of a sitcom.

The set-up makes it perfectly clear exactly what must happen in "For Love and Money," but the movie struggles manfully ahead, pretending it doesn't know. The story involves Fox as a New York hotel concierge, who falls in love with a millionaire's sweet and innocent mistress. Can you guess who gets the girl? Some effort is made to flesh out this idea, which must have been ancient in Chaplin's time, by adding backstage details about the operation of the hotel. But even here no effort is made to be original or observant. We see some corridors, we meet the snotty manager and the ancient bellman, and we learn that conciergi trade theater tickets with each other in Central Park. But the movie isn't about hotel, it's about ancient plot devices. Fox plays Doug Ireland, concierge at a hotel where every customer needs special handling. One of them is Christian Hanover ( Anthony Higgins ), a supercilious rich man who is shamelessly taking advantage of the naive but beautiful Andy Hart (Gabrielle Anwar). Doug's heart goes pitty-pat the moment he sees Andy, but he cannot act on his impulses because Hanover is a big tipper.

Plus, of course, Doug has a dream. He wants to build a hotel on an island off Manhattan, and he's purchased an option to the rights. Now he needs a backer, and Hanover plays him along. Doug knows Andy likes him, and he knows how shamelessly the married millionaire is deceiving her. But if Doug wins his love, he loses his hotel.

And that's about it. The movie is a throwback to a kinder, gentler time; this could have been a Sandra Dee comedy in the 1950s.

Nothing in it is very witty, or very new, or very smart. Gabrielle Anwar makes an appealing presence (you may remember her from "Scent Of A Woman"), and there is a half-hearted attempt to work up some slapstick in a scene at the millionaire's summer home.

But "For Love or Money" is essentially the kind of movie where you walk in, sit down, and start thinking this is where you came in.

What in the world is this. Everything is so cliché and corny, the comedy, drama, romance is just nothing special, it's not even average. WHY IS THERE A SONG THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE FILM?!? The dialogue is doo-doo, every word. Coco chuckles every single second in this and i don't know what to feel about it. A lot of the scenes are overly acted, they are literal grown people, reacting like children (which is fine) but so unrealistic. I'm not saying that "That thing called tadhana" is a masterpiece.. but it's just miles ahead with its script, storyline and simple directing.. doesn't need a big budget to make that film, doesn't involve overdramatic scenes to try to gain sympathy. So what's the message of this film? That we have to prioritize money because it will act as our saving grace for all of our problems and love can just happen if fate favors us? Very hopeful huh. Angelica Panganiban's performance and the beautiful landscape of Dubai are the only things that make this film tolerable to watch. The first part gives me a lot of Star Cinema tropes and the second part looks like something that came out from an ABS-CBN heavy drama primetime series. Angelica deserves to have a better film.

This Filipino love triangle set among OFWs in the UAE is merely derivative of much better movies (particularly Rory Quintos’s 2005 drama DUBAI). It doesn’t show that film’s specificity in the unique issues facing OFWs, or delve into the complexities of the Filipino communities in Dubai; rather, it mostly uses Dubai just as an “exotic” locale, an excuse for MTV-style visuals of skyscrapers and fast cars and luxury items. Generic through and through.
