good google slide presentations

If you need to make a presentation, you want to give yourself the best chance of success. To sell the product or yourself, to inform, to get your message across – the better the presentation the better the chances. Slide show presentations are a common way of doing this, but they are no less useful for that. They have many advantages, it’s why they are so popular, they can get the information across clearly, concisely, and memorably if done well. One of the most important decisions is which software to use. One option is Google Slides, but the software alone will not a great presentation make. In this article, we’ll give you some tips on how to really spice up that Google Slides presentation to create something you are proud of and more importantly will get the job done.

What is Google Slides?

Google Slides is a specialized presentation program that is part of the Google Drive service and it is free or there is a paid-for business option – G suite.  It is available as a desktop application and also as a web app or mobile app, so it can be used in pretty much any situation by anybody with computer access.

Put simply Google Slides enables anyone to create a presentation and edit it , and significantly can allow you to collaborate with other users in real-time . It is designed for online use and is regularly updated with new, fresh features. Crucially, it is also incredibly easy to use .

You’ve got the resource, you’ve got the concept, so the only question that remains is how do you make it something special? Here are the top 20 design tips to consider when using Google Slides:

Tip 1: Use templates Tip 2: Use plenty of  images Tip 3: Experiment with typography Tip 4: Add diagrams and infographics Tip 5: Get creative with your images Tip 6: Be careful with color Tip 7: Add animated transitions Tip 8: Collaborate with your team Tip 9: Add videos Tip 10: Hold back on the text

Tip 11: Make it a story Tip 12: Make reference Tip 13: Add links Tip 14: Take questions Tip 15: Make notes Tip 16: Add bullet points Tip 17: Make it device friendly Tip 18: Use numbers Tip 19: Finish with C.T.A Tip 20: Don’t extend too much

Tip #1: Use templates

good google slide presentations

The theme of your presentation should be represented by the theme of your slideshow. It will hold everything together.

Unless you are a designer yourself, it can be tricky and time-consuming to design a presentation from scratch that looks the part. The professional designers know what they are doing and give you plenty of options. It isn’t lazy, it doesn’t reflect on your design skills (you aren’t a designer anyway), and nobody questions your creativity.

In actual fact, using the numerous professionally designed templates available on Google Slides does two really useful jobs, if, in fact, they notice at all. Firstly it shows the audience that you know your limits and more importantly, it gives you time to focus on the content of the presentation. It is after all the content that is your principal goal. Plus it gives you extra time to concentrate on your all-important presentation skills.

The templates are all exceptionally designed, and completely and easily editable including the addition of images, layout, color, and background color. Really what more could you need?

Tip #2: Use plenty of  images

good google slide presentations

Presentations need to be visual. We remember images, we understand images, we recognize and associate with images, and we are brief visual creatures. You need to use images, but we wish it was that simple. don’t just throw them in for the sake of it!

The images you use have a huge effect. The key is to use powerful and appropriate images such as photos and illustrations that help you get your message through. Images that emphasize and enhance your words, stoke up emotion and clarify a complex issue, all these images are useful and powerful. They help you deliver what you want, they help you get your message across and you need to get them into the presentation as thoughtfully as possible.

So you know, you want images so then you need to decide on the right ones. Either use your own images previously downloaded or created and saved and insert them or use Google image search. If you use Google’s image search which has a tremendous number of options, we’re talking in the millions here, it isn’t even necessary to download them first, just add them via your browser tab, insert, image, type in keywords and search away then click on your choice and it’s done.

The type of images you add is important and well worth thinking about. Illustrations can show creativity, originality, and imagination. They are great for illustrating more abstract or complex ideas. You can choose between artistic, hand-drawn, graphic, geometric, simple outlines, etc, all will generate a different tone and feel. Photographic images can present reality, credibility, and honesty. With either choice, you can get really creative, grab the attention, hold the attention, and be remembered.

Be aware that heavy files can result in lagging, which is the last thing you need. Run the presentation through, to check it’s smooth.

Tip #3: Experiment with typography

good google slide presentations

If you’ve got great content, and we’re sure you have, why go with a bog-standard font. Let’s get creative and choose the font that will suit your theme, your content, and your style, a font that will catch the eye and set you apart. In Google Slides when you click on a text box you get a font option, including size, color, etc. There is a great range but selecting “more fonts” at the top will direct you to the free Google Fonts service. Here you can get really funky. Don’t be afraid an unusual font can have a wow effect but remember it needs to be readable too. You can add your own custom fonts too.

And that’s not all, clicking on the More option on the menu bar (far right) gives you room to play with the text you have, from the usual rotation, size, text fitting, and positioning to the more interesting drop shadow and reflection options. (including opacity, and translucency slide bars.) These add interest and an extra dimension and look like you’ve really made an effort.

Tip #4: Add diagrams and infographics

good google slide presentations

As with the images above, infographics and diagrams are ideal for presentations. They convey masses amount of information in accessible chunks in a visual way. If you’ve got stats and data or even a complex idea to explain there is little as confusing and frankly dull as long lists of figures or long-winded explanations. This is where the latest craze for infographics really comes into its own.

You can create infographics independently of Google Slides and simply insert it, in the correct spot. Alternatively, you can create a chart or graph, a flowchart, or a diagram straight in Slides, using google sheets or one of the standard menu options. Again these are flexible and editable.

Tip #5: Get creative with your images

good google slide presentations

We’ve already established that you need images, right? If you’ve selected the appropriate powerful ones, now is the time to put in a tiny bit of effort to add a little extra style. Google Slides contains an option for masking images, meaning you can play with the edges, round off the corners, change image shape and add other stylistic elements. These little things make a huge difference so get creative and experiment, you can always undo, the many options by simply clicking on the image, then the Mask image icon (the little triangle).

Tip #6: Be careful with color

good google slide presentations

We all know colors can improve a presentation but it is equally true that they can ruin it too. A tendency to throw colors around willy-nilly can look childish and distract from your main aim, so think carefully.

Colors carry associations and are emotive(be aware that they are also culture-sensitive) and can be a great psychological tool when presenting. But you have to make some decisions about what, where, and how much.

  • Brand Colors – if you’re presenting your brand, colors are a fantastic way of creating a strong flow of identity throughout. You can stick to the exact colors or use tonal variations and still keep the consistency.
  • Bright Colors – catch the attention, but don’t overdo it. Combinations work well, especially regarding images and texts.
  • One dominant color – A theme that eases from slide to slide, when used cleverly focuses the eye and highlights key points.
  • Black and White – a classic for a reason, dramatic yet clear, elegant yet simple, and you can add grey or occasional pops of color that really stand out.
  • Trends of 2022 – colors go in fashions too, check out the most trendy colors and combinations in 2022 .
  • Gradients – Gradients and color transitions are very popular.
  • Backgrounds – full or part, transparent or semi-transparent, plain, pattern or texture – background really help draw the eye to a particular section. You can also add your own.

Google Slides makes it easy to edit colors into your work, the difficult bit is making the decision in the first place.

Tip #7: Add animated transitions

good google slide presentations

The visual effect given when moving from one slide to the next, transitions is one of the simplest methods of adding a professional feel to the overall presentation. In Google Slides, just click on the “Transitions” button on the menu and choose from the many options available. The rule of thumb is to find one you like and stick to it during the whole presentation, there are lots of options but don’t be tempted to mix them up. A great transition will keep the interest and create a dynamic flow, a cacophony will distract.

It’s worth noting you should try to keep the number of slides and therefore transitions as low as possible, too many slides is too much movement and not enough focus.

Tip #8: Collaborate with your team

good google slide presentations

A great advantage of Google Slides is that as it’s online, anyone with permission can see where you are at with the design and even edit it. If you are working with a design team or content writers this is ideal, if you want another opinion it’s a great option too. Another set of eyes can offer insights, and advice, and often see mistakes that you haven’t even noticed. And always get your presentation proofread to avoid potential embarrassment, the last thing you need is to be talking over a glaring typo, hours spent putting together a great presentation can be lost in an instant.

All edits are tracked by the user and indicated by color coding and you can give various levels of permissions. With a revision history that tracks changes to the presentation.

Tip #9: Add videos

good google slide presentations

It may be appropriate to do something a little different and add a video, it will cause a stir. If you think this is an option that will add to your presentation and isn’t just there because you can do it, then it’s easy to do in Google Slides.

By clicking on “Insert” then “video”, you can add either form your own saved video to your Google Drive account or search YouTube videos. Be sure to watch the video before embedding it, you don’t want an embarrassing surprise. Then edit or format your video as you wish, you can change position or size and playback options, it’s easy but a great way of impressing the audience.

Tip #10: Hold back on the text

good google slide presentations

Your presentation is an aid to your speech, a guide, and in addition, it is not a document to be read. A text overload will do one of two things either people will focus on the writing and you’ll lose their attention, or worse you’ll lose them altogether and they’ll focus on neither.

The rule is to be brief, the shorter the better. Strong impacting, emotive, emphasizing, provocative – these are the words you are looking for, nobody wants long explanatory texts (that’s what your images are for).

Experts recommend up to six words per slide is enough to gain the attention and get the audience to listen to what you have to say.

Tip #11: Make it a story

good google slide presentations

We are surrounded by stories from the earliest fairy tales of childhood to the binge-watched Netflix dramas of present times. If you want your presentation to really strike a chord, storytelling is the way to go. Stories, anecdotes, and personal snippets all will allow your key communicative aim to be understood. They also give you a chance to show your personality, humor, humility, experience, and knowledge, and liven things ups.

The slide show is used as a guide through your story, a background that will hold the key concepts and arguments, keep them clear, and hold the focus. But essentially they supplement and add whilst you do the work.

Tip #12: Make reference

good google slide presentations

By referring to current events, and culture you kill two birds with one stone. Firstly, the audience can relate to your message and can link your ideas to what they are familiar with. Secondly, it keeps things topical, relevant, and up-to-date and that includes the images of you. It forms a vital link with the audience, you are part of them and not apart from them.

But beware you need to know your stuff, what you may think is topical could fall on deaf ears. Research and know your audience, think of age and cultural differences – you don’t want your witty observation to fall on stony ground. And everything should be focused back on your main point, link it to the presentation.

Tip #13: Add links

good google slide presentations

Links will enable people to lookup more detailed information, links will also show you’ve done your background, links look academic, and links can add a level of professionalism.

With Google Slides there is a research tool, which makes it simple to add links to websites but also to images or additional files in your Drive account. A very useful way of allowing you to be brief and focused but supplying all information that is needed. You can even type into the Google Slides to search for relevant images and sites.

Tip #14: Take questions (often)

good google slide presentations

Don’t wait until the end to invite questions, people often forget what they were going to ask or are just desperate to get to the free buffet! Questions should be invited throughout, interaction is good, and it makes the audience feel part of the process. In a physical presence in a meeting room or conference hall, this should be scheduled into your time, it is easy to forget and move on.

Google Slides has a Presenters notes section that only you can during the presentation, this is an excellent place to remind yourself to ask for questions.

If your presentation is virtual then Google Slides can create a link for you to send to your audience. Through this link, the viewers can post questions which then appear in the box. An excellent way of increasing active viewing.

Tip #15: Make notes

good google slide presentations

As we’ve established your slide show is not a complete presentation, your skills are absolutely vital. You need to be prepared for the pressure and the performance. Google Slides provides a “Presenter Notes” option where you can create a guide for each slide, or a script if you wish. There is a good chance you will forget something or get lost at some point unless you really know your stuff – and even then it’s more than possible.

When you start your slide show select “Present” and scroll to the bottom of the screen. Click on the gear icon and open your written notes. The notes open in a separate window, so you need to arrange your setup so you have different screens meaning the audience doesn’t see the notes. The notes follow the slide you are on, forwards or backward, and at whatever speed you are working.

Tip #16: Add bullet points

good google slide presentations

In an article, proposal, or report, bullet points are great, they break up texts, highlight key points, and make scanning easier but these are text for reading. A presentation is not for reading. You need to explain the slides, the bullets don’t. If it’s worth a bullet point it’s worth a slide of its own. Don’t patronize your audience with obvious point breakdowns when a few words will do the trick. If they need a breakdown, or explanation add a link.

Tip #17: Make it device friendly

good google slide presentations

You may well be using your presentation slide show in a very standard, typical way, perhaps projecting it onto a screen behind you from your laptop. Remember Google Slides is online so you can access it from a mobile device or tablet. This means that it is possible to cast from your device to a screen. You don’t necessarily have to carry around your laptop for your presentation.

It is also great for working on your presentation remotely, where ever you may be. You get a great idea on the train, take out your phone and access your presentation.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that others can access your presentation from their device too, so remember when doing the design that your presentation needs to look at the part on the small screen.

Tip #18: Use numbers

good google slide presentations

Numbers add clarity, help the listeners know where you are, act as a guide through the process, and make it feel like you are progressing. If you number each slide there is a sense of drawing to a goal, it’s a simple rule but one of the best. They take seconds to add on Google Slides and are proven to help.

Tip #19: Finish with C.T.A

good google slide presentations

A call to action is a great way to finish. It has the dual function of closing the presentation and opening the next dialogue. Devote a whole slide to it, make it provocative, you want this part to be remembered.

Thank your audience, of course, it pays to be polite… but please don’t waste a slide on this. Your ending needs to be dramatic and memorable. The questions you need to pose at the end of your presentation, and the questions the audience needs to be asking themselves is… what now? Tell them what you want them to do – directly.

Tip#20: Don’t extend too much

good google slide presentations

We’ve left it to the end, it’s so important but be brief. Nobody will thank you for needlessly extending, you sat in presentations yourself and you know exactly what everybody is thinking. Let’s get this over and done, yes? This is what the experts say and who are we to argue.

  • Ten key slides  – Seems harsh and obviously, it’s only a guide but it’s a good guide. This is the optimal number of slides in a Slide Show presentation, as most people don’t cope well with more than ten key ideas in one session.
  • Twenty minutes – If your presentation talk is planned for 20 solid informative minutes it’s plenty. You can have a brief intro (but keep it brief) and clearly, it’s flexible for additional questions and discussions but your actual presentation time should be around 20 minutes.

Presentation construction and the presentations themselves are not necessarily dull. These key tips are both general and Google Slide specific. The idea is to create something that will wow your audience, look professional, create a buzz, and most importantly of all – achieve your main goal. Substance and style rather than one over the other.

You and your design are a team, working together to get the information and message across. The design should, of course, look the part and these tips will help you there – but it shouldn’t dominate.

You are a focal point too, and here are some things to remember:

  • Have energy – if you are not enjoying it, no one will.
  • Practice – eye contact, voice, and gestures, they all go a long way to selling the message and keeping people with you. Practice in front of a mirror, in front of friends and family, even a pet -it makes a difference when you do it in front of an audience – you’ll get the feel.
  • Prepare – double-check the equipment, and proofread the presentation (better get it to proofread).
  • Feel Comfortable – get there in good time, check the room and facilities, wear clothes you feel good in, it all helps your confidence.
  • You can’t please all the people all the time – remember some people will always be bored, and won’t react, hit the majority and you’ll be fine.

These Google Slides tips are exactly that tips, you use what you want, what you think will work for you, and you will work for your audience. The Slides will help, they are the magic wand but you are the one waving it and speaking the magic words.

How to Make a “Good” Presentation “Great”

  • Guy Kawasaki

good google slide presentations

Remember: Less is more.

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

  • Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
  • Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
  • Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
  • Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.

As an intern or early career professional, chances are that you’ll be tasked with making or giving a presentation in the near future. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others.

Four Page Layout

This vintage newspaper template features a four-page layout with distinct block arrangements. The front page will immediately attract the reader's attention with a large header and a vintage font. All that remains is to fill out an interesting article to the blank and replace stock photos. Also, we have included a placeholder for the issue date and links to your website (optional).

Each of the template pages offers a unique structure so you can arrange articles using ready-made information blocks.

Consistent Vintage Design

In this newspaper template in Google Docs you will not find any bright or stand out from the main style elements. Our designers made sure that no one could distinguish this form from the newspapers that were printed in 1969.

Google Slides: How to make a Jeopardy game

J eopardy is one of the longest-running game shows, consistently garnering a large viewership. Many classrooms have adapted the popular American quiz show's format. Its familiarity and sense of competition make it an effective tool in school environments. Reviewing chapters becomes a fun experience for students. You can make a custom version of Jeopardy in Google Slides. The service works on your Android phone, iPhone, laptop, desktop PC, or budget Chromebook . This guide shows you how to make a Jeopardy game in Google Slides.

What is Jeopardy? How do you play it?

Jeopardy is a television quiz show which features three contestants trying to win money. The game show host quizzes them on trivia related to science, math, geography, language, and pop culture.

The Jeopardy game consists of three rounds. The first two rounds comprise six categories with five clues each. When a player chooses a topic and dollar value, the host reads the clue, and the participants use their buzzers to respond with the correct question. In Final Jeopardy, only contestants with a positive dollar amount can participate. The player with the highest total amount wins the prize and gets to play the next game. The second and third-place contestants win $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.

How to make a jeopardy game in google slides from scratch.

You can make a custom Jeopardy game to prepare for a new subject, review for a test, and more in Google Slides. You'll start by dividing the process into manageable sections, like making the game board, clues, and question slides. Finally, you'll link the relevant slides to create a Jeopardy game.

Create the Jeopardy game board

You'll first make the game board with the categories and score. Create a table in Google Slides with the subjects in the top row and the scoring system in the remaining rows. In this example, to include five topics with five clues each, make a table with six rows and five columns.

Here's how to do it:

  • Select Insert from the toolbar.
  • Select Table .
  • Set the table dimensions.
  • Enter the topics in the top row.
  • Enter the scores in the remaining rows.

If the table doesn't appeal to you, use shapes to represent the topic and score. Select them by navigating to Insert > Shapes .

Make the answer/clue slide

In Jeopardy, the clue or answer comes first, followed by the question.

  • To add a new slide, click Slide and choose New slide . Alternatively, use the shortcut Ctrl + M .
  • Add your answer by clicking Insert > Text box .
  • Use the options from the toolbar to change the font style, size, and formatting.

You can add a home icon to return to the game board and a right arrow icon to navigate to the next slide. Use add-ons for a better selection. Here's how to include them in your presentation.

  • Click Extensions in the toolbar.
  • Select Add-ons .
  • Choose Get add-ons .
  • Type Icons for Slides & Docs .
  • Click Install .
  • From the toolbar, select Extensions .
  • Choose Icons for Slides & Docs and click Start .
  • Type home in the search bar and press Enter .
  • Choose a size and color.
  • Click Insert .
  • Repeat the same steps to insert the right arrow.

Create the question slide

Here's how to make the question slide:

  • Click Slide .
  • Select New slide .
  • Click Insert and choose Text box .
  • Type your question.
  • Add the home and right arrow icons at the top.

How to add transparency to an image in Google Slides

Connect each slide.

The final step is to connect each slide using hyperlinks. Here's how to connect the points on the game board slide with the corresponding clues:

  • Navigate to the game board (the first slide).
  • Select a table cell for one of the point categories.
  • Click Insert from the toolbar.
  • Scroll down and select Link .
  • Alternatively, right-click the selected text and choose Link from the drop-down menu.
  • Type the slide number and click the text below it.
  • Click Apply .
  • Repeat the same process for the remaining points, linking the scores for each category with the corresponding clue.

The remaining slides (clue and question) include the home and right-arrow icons at the top. Here's how to add links to them:

  • Click the home icon .
  • Choose First Slide .
  • Click the right arrow icon .
  • Click Insert and select Link .
  • Choose Next Slide .

After completing your question slide, copy it from the sidebar and paste it. Then, use it as a template for the remaining clues and questions. The template's home and right-arrow links are replicated, pointing toward the first and next slide, respectively. You don't need to repeat the hyperlinking process.

Copy a slide by selecting it and pressing Ctrl + C . Press Ctrl + V to paste ( Cmd + C and Cmd + V on a Mac).

Make your Google Slides presentations stand out with these tips

Follow the instructions above to make a fun Jeopardy game in Google Slides. These guidelines can also help you organize a fun trivia night for family gatherings. Spice up your presentations by adding audio clips , voiceovers, and other sound effects. If your slideshow looks bland, use these beautiful templates and add a creative spin. Use them for your work, business, or school assignments.

If you don’t already have a pair of comfortable slides in your closet, it’s time to find your perfect pair.

Celebrities like Reese Witherspoon and Hilary Duff have frequently stepped out wearing this casual and versatile footwear. Slides are lightweight, packable and easy to slide on and off, so they’re ideal for summer travel, errands, or pool days. We’ve tried out the bestselling styles looking at fit, comfort, and durability to help find your new favorite pair.

Just Launched

We’d be remiss not to add that Dr. Scholl’s Shoes just launched a collaboration with Free People . And while we haven’t had a chance to try these slides out, the boho-chic denim and eyelet styles are worth a mention.

Keep reading to find the next addition to your wardrobe!

Best Overall

Adidas adilette comfort slides.

They allow a little extra room for those with wide feet.

The ample cushioning in the footbed keeps you supported and comfortable, even when you spend a lot of time on your feet.

The cushioning molds to your feet over time for added comfort.

The comfort slides run a little big.

Editor’s Note: We tested the Adilette Boost Slides, but they have been discontinued so we’re recommending the Adidas Adilette Comfort Slides as an alternative.

While the Boost slides won best overall because of their design, fit, and comfort, the Comfort slides share these qualities. The Comfort slides have a foamy, cushioned insole that isn’t so plush that you sink into it, but is soft enough to keep you comfortable and supported.

There’s also a slight lip along the edge of the foamy footbed that grips your feet so you don’t have to worry about them slipping off while walking. Our tester wore the Boost slides while doing chores around the house and on a light stroll through the neighborhood. They didn’t experience any discomfort, chafing, or irritation, and since the Comfort slides are made from the same material, we think these would be great for everyday wear.

The $35 price point is a great value for the quality. The only word of caution is that they run a little big, so you might consider sizing down.

Best Overall, Runner Up

Nike jordan hex slides.

Incredibly soft thanks to the foamy texture, and molds to your feet the longer you wear it which adds comfort.

The shoes are lightweight and airy.

The rigid outsole gives nice traction, so you don’t have to worry about slips.

They run a bit big, so you should expect to size down.

This Nike pair has a fun, geometric look and a soft, foamy texture that feels like walking on a cloud. The slides mold to your feet the longer you wear them for added comfort, and the top strap keeps them secured without feeling too tight.

Even though they’re almost entirely made of molded foam, there’s ridging on the outsole which adds traction when you’re walking. These fell just short of best overall because they run a bit big. You should plan on sizing down half a size, or a full size if you have narrow feet. That aside, the value and quality is impressive!

Colors: 3 | Material: Molded foam | Sizes: 6–13.5

Best Budget

Cushionaire women's lane cork footbed sandal with +comfort.

Suede straps and cushioned footbed give these slides a surprising level of comfort.

The thick, sturdy soles and ridged outsoles provide good traction and support, so you feel stable while wearing them.

These run true to size, so there’s no guesswork when shopping.

The buckles on the straps stain the suede.

If you’re not looking to make a major investment, this Cushionaire pair is an Amazon gem. Our tester was impressed by how comfortable they were: The suede straps felt soft on their feet and didn’t chafe at all, and the cushioned footbed added support and comfort. On the outsole, thick ridged rubber gave the slides nice traction no matter how much our tester moved around.

We appreciate that these run true to size, so there’s no need to decipher complicated manufacturer guides when picking the right pair. One drawback we noticed was that the buckles on the straps stained the suede material — it’s not a dealbreaker considering the price but is something to keep in mind. These would be great for anyone who likes the look of Birkenstocks but isn’t ready to invest in the real thing.

Colors: 22 | Material: Ethylene Vinyl Acetate | Sizes: 6–9.5

People / Erica Finamore

Best Birkenstock

Birkenstock women's boston soft footbed clog.

The support ridges in between the toes add extra support and grip so that they don’t fall off your feet.

The firm soles maintain support, and the cushioned top layer has a level of softness which makes the slides great for casual, everyday wear.

The cork soles, suede material, and metal hardware give these a high quality look and feel.

On hot days, the suede insole may chafe against your skin if you wear the shoes without socks.

Birkenstock sizing is specific, so you should follow the sizing guide closely, especially if you’re ordering your first pair.

Of course, if you are ready to bring home some Birkenstocks, then this is the pair you should buy. The Boston Clog has a suede footbed, durable EVA sole, and sturdy metal hardware. The support ridges around the toes give these slides a nice grip and keep them in place under your feet when you’re on the go.  Like a few other slides on our list, these gradually mold to your feet and get even more comfortable as you wear them.

Since they’re made from suede on the inside as well, there’s a chance of blisters on particularly humid days. While these shoes are expensive, you’re paying for high quality materials and a well-known brand, so their worth depends on how much you’ll wear them. If you prefer flats or slides, these would be a great long-term investment. Keep in mind that Birkenstock’s sizing is pretty specific, so you’ll want to follow their sizing guide closely when shopping.

Colors: 5 | Material: Suede footbed/upper, EVA sole | Sizes: 4.5–12.5

Best Arch Support

Chaco women’s chillos slide.

The adjustable strap makes these slides comfortable for wide or narrow feet.

Durable and supportive, they’re great for running errands or changing into after a workout.

Even though they feel sturdy, they’re still lightweight and soft.

These aren’t the most versatile style-wise because they have a more sporty look, so they’re better for running errands or wearing around the house.

Oftentimes slides are pretty flimsy and don’t provide enough support, but Chaco is celebrated as a brand that makes slides designed for rough-and-tumble activities. We love this adjustable pair, which allows for a customized fit and added comfort. They’re made with Chaco’s Luvseat™ signature footbed which encourages healthy alignment.

While they do feel sturdy and well made, they’re also lightweight. If you want something you could easily transition from the pool or beach to dinner, these aren’t the best fit — as they have a more sporty look. However, if you want a pair of slides to wear post workout for added recovery, or if you just need something with extra support, these are worth the purchase.

Colors: 9 | Material: Polyester upper, Luvseat™ arch support, EVA out sole | Sizes: 5–12

Editor Pick

Ugg goldenstar high slide.

These slides have a cushioned platform footbed which adds extra comfort and shock absorption.

They have two velcro straps that you can adjust as needed.

The dense rubber sole has good traction so you won’t slide while wearing these slides.

They do cause some chafing when you walk fast due to the suede material.

It’s no secret that celebrities love their Uggs — just ask Sarah Jessica Parker or Jennifer Lopez . Our editors are also fans of this brand, thanks to the durability, styles, and comfort. If you like the ease and casual design of Birkenstocks, the Goldenstar High Slide has a similar appearance, but with the added benefit of a foam platform that cushions your foot.

The length fits true to size, and the shoes are a little wide (ideal for those with wider feet), but if you need a tighter fit, the velcro straps are adjustable. We like the soft neutral color options: Sage green, beige, brown, and gray. However, if you find yourself walking quickly through, say, an airport (as one of our editors did recently), the suede material might slightly chafe your skin.

Colors: 4 | Material: Sugarcane EVA outsole, foam footbed, suede upper | Sizes: 5–12

Best Durability

Chaco women’s lowdown slide.

These shoes’ adjustable straps add security and a more customized fit.

They are lightweight, supportive, and comfortable  — no break-in period required.

The rubber and polyester material dry quickly, so these are great for transitioning from wet to dry land.

They have a fairly pronounced arch in the footbed, so this may cause discomfort if you’re particular about that sort of thing.

The material is on the noisier side when you walk.

Chacos are built for outdoor activities, so it makes sense that they proved the most durable in our test. Much like the Chillos , this pair has an adjustable strap which ensures a good fit — you can opt for a looser feel or tighten them so they don’t slip off your feet.

We really like these for running errands, traveling, or spending the day outside. We didn’t notice any break-in period for them whatsoever, and didn’t experience any discomfort, blistering, or chafing. The rubber and polyester material work together to repel water and dry rather quickly, so if you’re spending a day at the lake or beach, these are perfect for the wet-to-dry transition.

You should keep in mind that these have a fairly pronounced arch in the footbed, which could cause discomfort if you have flat feet. They’re also noisy, but for $65, we believe this is worth the purchase if you want a pair of slides that are built to last.

Colors: 8  | Material: Polyester upper, Luvseat™ arch support, rubber out sole |  Sizes: 5–12

People / Stacey Wegner

Best Cushion

Reef cushion vera cruz slide.

The footbed is so soft that it felt like the shoes had already been broken in on the first wear.

The thick outsoles and anatomic contouring around the arches make you feel supported with every step.

The vegan leather material gives these a versatile appearance for everything from running errands to going to dinner.

The loops that secure the straps in place are made of plastic as opposed to metal, which gives them a cheaper look.

What we loved most about these leather slides was how soft they were.  It was like they’d already been broken in: The footbeds were soft and cushioned, and there was no blistering or chafing during testing. Anatomic contouring around the arch and thick rubber outsoles add a nice amount of support so you can spend lots of time on your feet without feeling discomfort.

They’re also made of vegan leather, which gives them an elevated look — easily dressed up or down. One drawback is that the plastic material for the strap loops, which makes them look a bit cheap. However, the plushy cushioned feel in the footbed and the buttery soft vegan leather still earns our recommendation.

Colors: 3 | Material: Vegan leather, rubber outsole |  Sizes: 5–11

Best for Travel

Message mullen slide.

They’re machine washable which makes for easy maintenance.

They have excellent traction,  which is ideal for on-the-go movement and travel.

Functional and sleek, these are easily transitionable for a wide range of events.

They’re a little more expensive than others on our list.

This functional pair of Message slides are sleek and fashionable. They’re made of upcycled cork and have a knitted compression material, their signature hugflex™, on top. Parts of the shoe feel tight when you first put them on, but they mold to your foot’s shape overtime. That said, they were so comfortable from the minute we put them on, for every occasion — whether having brunch with friends, walking through the airport, exploring a new city, running errands, or doing chores around the house.

Even though they’re simple and soft, they still have excellent traction on the soles, so you don't have to worry about slipping and sliding while you walk. These are ideal for travel because they have a  versatile and comfortable design.

And they’re machine washable: Whether you’ve spent a day at the beach or a week walking around dirty airport floors and busy streets, just toss them in the wash on a gentle cycle in cold water for an easy refresh. Though a little expensive, we can confirm these are incredibly comfortable, durable, and high quality.

Colors: 4 | Material: Cork, rubber sole | Sizes: 5.5-13

Best Sporty

Nike offcourt adjust women's slides.

This pair has good cushioning and support for your feet.

The adjustable strap allows for a more secure fit.

The shoes are comfortable and stay in place when you walk around.

There aren’t half sizes, but our tester sized up and found a good fit.

Our tester’s feet became quite sweaty when wearing these slides.

These Nike slides are great for the locker room, travel between games, and anywhere else your exercise might take you. Our tester sized up, but the adjustable strap is ideal for those who wear half sizes.

This pair was comfortable and stayed in place when our tester walked around. The footbed also has enough cushioning to provide support (ideal for flat feet). One thing our tester noted was that their feet got quite sweaty when wearing these shoes (which was unusual for them). This might be due to the thick foam padding on all sides of the shoe — which adds to the overall comfort.

Colors: 2  | Material: Dual-density foam |  Sizes: 5-12

People / Hildara Araya-Gonzalez

Best Waterproof

Crocs women's swiftwater sandal.

These shoes are so lightweight and flexible, it’s easy to forget you’re even wearing them.

There’s no break-in period required, and even with all the criss-crossing straps there was no chafing or blistering.

Significant traction on the soles and waterproofing all around makes these easy to wear from wet to dry land.

They don’t provide much arch support.

If you’re planning on spending a lot of time in the water this summer, the Swiftwater Sandals from Crocs are a good value. During testing, these slides were quite durable and didn’t lose their like-new quality. We appreciated that there wasn’t a break-in period, even though we expected some blistering and chafing due to the rubbery criss-cross straps.

These are lightweight and flexible, but still provide comfort and traction so that you feel secure without being weighed down. Alas, because they’re so lightweight, there’s minimal arch support. But if you want something simple and lightweight you can wear at the pool or lake, these are worth the under-$40 price tag.

Colors: 17 | Material: Ethylene vinyl acetate | Sizes: 4–11

Best Leather

Quince nappa leather double buckle slides.

The adjustable buckle straps give these a more customized fit.

The footbed feels soft and velvety.

The leather makes these easy to dress up or down.

The metal buckles cheapen the look.

These slides run small and don’t come in half sizes.

We found an awesome Birkenstock lookalike with this pair by Quince. What we love most about these is how soft they are: The leather straps feel buttery smooth, and the footbed has a velvety feel that maintains its plushness even after extended wear. They feel like Birkenstocks but are even softer , which is why they’re ideal for those who prefer leather.

The leather material makes them easy to dress up or down, so they’ll definitely earn their place as a staple in your closet.  That said, the metal buckles  — though sturdy — have a lower quality look, and the slides run small without  half-size options. Overall, they’re a great Birkenstock alternative that’s softer and nearly half the price.

Colors: 3 | Material: 100% full-grain nappa leather upper with suede insole, cork midsole, EVA outsole |  Sizes: 5–10

Best for Vacation

Reef cushion vista hi sandal.

The cork material in the footbed provides enough grip that you won’t feel like you’re slipping and sliding while walking.

Deep grooves on the thick outsoles make for excellent tread on a wide range of surfaces.

The vegan leather material makes them easy to pair with casual or dressy outfits.

There is a break-in period as the leather straps caused some irritation in the beginning.

A small piece of the cork in the arch of the foot started peeling off after testing.

This Reef pair is a go-to for one of our editors when traveling on beach vacations, and our testers enjoyed them as well. The cork material in the footbed has a decent amount of grip so that you’ll feel secure while wearing them: The soles had good traction across pavement, grass, carpet, tile, and sealed cement.

They’re also visually versatile: Our editor has worn them for a casual beach day and then paired them with linen shorts for a nicer dinner afterward. They do require some break-in though. A day’s worth of wear caused some irritation on our tester’s foot from the straps. That said, if you wear them a few times before your trip, you’re good to go (speaking from our editor’s experience).  There was also some wear with the cork, but overall, these shoes are a solid and chic option for your next getaway.

Colors: 13 | Material: Vegan leather, rubber sole |  Sizes: 5–12

Other Comfortable Slides We Tried

  • OluKai Hila Slide : This pair has soft cushioned straps and a decent amount of traction that keeps you feeling stable and supported. They’re also waterproof, which makes them ideal for wearing to the beach or lake, and the sole is thick and sturdy so you could wear these on a wide range of rough surfaces without feeling discomfort. However, they run small and are extremely narrow, so it’s a bit of a fight to get your foot into the straps. For $80, we ultimately felt that they weren’t worth it.
  • Skechers Go Walk Massage Fit Slides : We appreciated that these didn’t cause any irritation or chafing thanks to the knitted top strap, and they run a little big which makes them easy to slip on and off around the house. However, the texture on the footbed is kind of lumpy, which was a little jarring. Also, they have a sportier look that wouldn’t allow for much flexibility with your wardrobe. At the end of the day we felt the $80 price point was a little steep considering you wouldn’t be able to wear these many places, and they weren’t very comfortable.

Things to Consider Before Buying Comfortable Slides

While you probably won’t be wearing a pair of slides on days when you’re doing strenuous activity, it’s important to pick a pair that’s supportive. “Look for a slide with a cushioned rubber or EVA sole that provides good arch support and stability, [and also] has outside grooves on the bottom for traction,” podiatrist Cory Clement, DPM tells PEOPLE. For those who need extra arch support, we love the Chacos Chillos because they’re sturdy yet lightweight, and they have an EVA outsole that protects your foot.

If you’re only planning on wearing your slides around the house, you won’t need to worry as much about them being exposed to the elements. But if you’re planning on wearing them while doing things like yard work and traveling, you’ll want to pay more attention to the material you’re choosing.

If durability is top of mind, you should opt for a pair with thicker soles that will hold up against rough terrain, like the Chacos Lowdowns . i If you’re wearing them on vacation, or to the pool or beach, you should look for pairs made with waterproof material, like the Crocs Swiftwaters .

Even if slides aren’t the kind of shoes you’d wear for a long hike or a workout, you still want them to fit properly and feel comfortable. You don’t want a pair that fits so tight that it’s a struggle to slip them on and off (they’re called slides for a reason), but instead there should be a little bit of extra room for added convenience.

According to Dr. Clement, “Molded footbeds offer better support and help your feet conform better.” The Nike Jordan Hex slides are a great example of this: They mold to your foot’s shape and become more comfortable the longer you wear them. When shopping, you should also be aware of the brand’s sizing — whether they run big or small, come in half sizes, or are designed  for narrow or wide feet.

How We Tested

Our editors selected 28 best-selling slides and tested them over the course of two days, evaluating them on fit, durability, comfort, and support. Testers wore their respective pairs for at least two hours each day (not including the break-in period, which was considered a separate part of the test). Testers wore their slides for a wide range of activities, including traveling, dining out, shopping, running errands, and going on walks. The slides that keep our testers’ feet supported, comfy, and pain-free made this list.

Why Trust Us

Olivia Avitt is a freelance writer for PEOPLE who specializes in thorough, honest product reviews. When writing this story, she carefully reviewed the test results of the included products and put together the need-to-know details  to help you pick the most comfortable slides for you. She also consulted podiatrist Dr. Cory Clement, who provided expert insights on what you should look for in a pair of slides for maximum comfort and support.

What Is PEOPLE TESTED?

We created the PEOPLE Tested seal of approval to help you find the very best products for your life. We use our unique methodology to test products in three labs across the country and with our network of home testers to determine their effectiveness, durability, ease of use, and so much more. Based on the results, we rate and recommend products so you can find the right one for your needs.

But we don’t stop there: We also regularly re-review the categories in which we’ve awarded the PEOPLE Tested seal of approval — because the best product of today might not be the best of tomorrow. And by the way, companies can never buy our recommendation: Their products must earn it, fair and square.

In short, PEOPLE Tested provides recommendations you can trust — every day, every purchase.
