Sometimes doing a free PhD means going abroad and doing your PhD in another country.

Personally, I travelled to Australia to do my PhD for the adventure and lifestyle. I was able to get a fully funded placement and international student fee waiver for three years to finish my degree.

Here’s a summary of some of the best countries you could do you PhD in if you want to do it for free.

In the Czech Republic , public universities host a multitude of English-language PhD programs and these programs are free for all PhD students, irrespective of their nationality. However, additional costs may be incurred by international students which might include language courses, health insurance, or student services fees, depending on the university policies.

Sweden maintains a unique policy that not only eradicates PhD fees at public universities but also provides study grants to some PhD students, which serves as a financial aid for their living expenses during the tenure of their studies.

In Germany , public universities offer feeless PhD programs to all students. However, a nominal administration fee, approximately €300 per semester, is required. This fee usually covers student services and perks like public transportation and access to university facilities.

Austria ‘s policy benefits PhD students from within the EU and EEA who complete their doctorates within a stipulated time frame, offering free education at public research universities. International students, on the other hand, have to pay fees, which, nonetheless, are capped by the Austrian government to maintain affordability.

Here are the top tips I would give you when Choosing a free PhD.

• Apply to STEM programs: Many PhD (and Master’s) programs, especially in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) fields, are fully funded in the US. Most state schools and Ivy League schools have fully funded programs for these fields.
• Prepare for stiff competition: Because these programs are fully funded, the competition is high. It’s not uncommon for hundreds or even thousands of students to apply to these programs each year, with only a small fraction being accepted.
• Consider assistantships: Fully-funded programs usually provide a stipend in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) or Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) positions. These roles involve either teaching or conducting research under a professor’s supervision.
• Be ready for some costs: Despite tuition being covered, you may still need to cover some school fees, student insurance, and other miscellaneous expenditures.
• Don’t consider unfunded programs: Many graduate programs do not fund students, but experts advise against attending these schools. The availability of funding indicates the health of the department in terms of research money and growth.

• Applicants to the Ph.D. in English program at UCLA are automatically considered for various funding options. A six-year funding package includes “a minimum of two years of full fellowship, four years of summer stipend support, and up to four years of teaching assistantships.” Beyond tuition, fees and health insurance are also covered.

Connecticut

• At Yale University, the School of Nursing offers full funding to its Ph.D. students. They receive a monthly stipend for four years in addition to paid tuition and health care.

District of Columbia

• Georgetown University offers scholarships and assistantships that cover full tuition and include a stipend and health insurance for the first five years to students in its PhD program in computer science.
• Students enrolled in the economics Ph.D. program at Emory University typically receive full funding. The stipend provided to students is $36,376 per year for five years, starting in fall 2023, and the full tuition scholarship is worth $70,200 per year. Funding for admitted students also includes a $4,370 annual subsidy that covers 100% of a student’s cost of health insurance. First-year students have no stipend-related work requirements.
• The University of Chicago provides funding for up to eight years of study for its anthropology PhD students. This includes a full-tuition scholarship, health insurance, and a living stipend of $33,000 for the 2022-2023 academic year. Students are also eligible to apply for external fellowships.

Massachusetts

• The T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University offers a PhD in biological sciences in public health, providing expertise in disease prevention and treatment. Current research involves diseases such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, malaria, and tuberculosis.

• PhD students in computer science or computer engineering at Washington University in St. Louis receive full tuition support, health insurance, a generous stipend for living expenses, and a new high-end Apple laptop computer. This support is guaranteed as long as students continue to make satisfactory progress towards their degree.
• Full-time NYU Steinhardt Ph.D. students are eligible for a funding package that includes an annual stipend – $32,000 for the 2022-2023 academic year – tuition coverage for required coursework and student health insurance for five years.

A stipend intended for twelve months amounts to $32,700, and the university also provides higher, generally intended for living expenses. In addition, Yale has even put into place subsidies that are meant to support not just the students but also their family members. 

The University covers comprehensive health insurance (including hospitalization coverage) for Ph.D. students and their children. At the same time, those with children under the age of 18 can also avail of a family support subsidy.

A master’s eases the transition to graduate work and may make you more competitive when applying to doctoral programs.

Although it's not usually a requirement, earning a master’s degree before applying to a Ph.D. or other doctoral program can be a good way to get accustomed to graduate-level coursework while gaining valuable research experience and connections in your field.

But it can also be an expensive and time-consuming detour on the route to a doctorate, so it’s important to consider whether the benefits of earning a master’s before a Ph.D. outweigh the cost.

Here are some factors experts say you should weigh.

Reasons to Get a Master’s Degree First

Karin Ash, a graduate consultant at Accepted, a college admissions consulting firm, says the research experience students can gain through a master’s tends to give them an edge in doctoral admissions.

Master's studies can also expand opportunities for students who already have significant research work behind them. Ash notes that some students she works with have research experience but choose to explore other research areas through a master's before deciding on a focus for their doctoral studies.

If your undergraduate major was fairly different from what you plan to study at a graduate level, getting a master’s degree first can help bridge the gap, says Julie Posselt, a professor of education and associate dean of the University of Southern California Graduate School. Posselt, who earned her master's before pursuing doctoral studies, says master’s studies can also help you decide whether what you’re studying is right for your academic interests and career goals .

“I learned through my master's program that the field that I had started to pursue was much more narrow than what I wanted for the long term,” Posselt says. “So instead of investing five years in a field, I was able to invest a shorter amount of time – two years – and then make the decision that if someday I wanted a Ph.D., it was going to need to be in a broader field than the one that I had during my master's.”

Ash and Posselt say a master’s can be a good way to network with experts in your field of interest and make connections that will be valuable in a future career.

“A lot of STEM students tell me they don’t have professors who know them as their classes are large,” Ash wrote in an email. “Obtaining a master’s degree will allow them to develop relationships with professors who can then write substantive recommendation letters .”

Reasons to Go Straight to a Doctoral Program

Master's degrees can be expensive , and students often don't receive significant funding to complete their studies.

“My concern is the increasing debt that American students have from their undergraduate education," Posselt says, "and the fact that most master's programs don't fund them, and as a result, students have to take out significant loans" to complete a master’s.

"I always encourage students, if they're going to get a master's degree, to try to find a place where they can get funding along the way,” she says.

On the other hand, Ash says it’s common for Ph.D. programs to be fully funded , so it may be unnecessarily costly to earn a master’s degree first – especially if it means taking out student loans .

In addition to considering the tuition cost, Posselt says it’s important to consider the earnings you could lose by delaying the start of your career by a year or two to pursue a master’s degree.

It's also worth investigating whether the doctoral program you're considering will accept some of the credits you earn in a master's program, as that could shorten your doctoral studies. But Posselt says the transferability of master's-level coursework is relatively weak and varies by institution.

Even if you do apply master's coursework to your Ph.D., it may not be worthwhile.

"Many Ph.D. programs will accept credits from courses taken at the master's level if the coursework is relevant to the program," Ash says. "However, often the applicant is veering to a more specialized education and will need to take the appropriate coursework to become proficient in that subject area. This could mean they end up with many more credits than needed to graduate."

If you’re still unsure whether you should pursue a master’s first, Posselt says it’s important to consider the leverage the degree could have when it comes to doctoral admissions. A master’s is more valuable in some fields than others, she notes, so consulting with advisers and mentors from your undergraduate studies is a good way to determine how useful it will be when pursuing doctoral work.

Offered jointly by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Ph.D. in Education provides you with full access to the extraordinary resources of Harvard University and prepares you to assume meaningful roles as university faculty, researchers, senior-level education leaders, and policymakers.

As a Ph.D. candidate, you will collaborate with scholars across all Harvard graduate schools on original interdisciplinary research. In the process, you will help forge new fields of inquiry that will impact the way we teach and learn. The program’s required coursework will develop your knowledge of education and your expertise in a range of quantitative and qualitative methods needed to conduct high-quality research. Curriculum Information

The Ph.D. in Education requires five years of full-time study to complete. You will choose your individual coursework and design your original research in close consultation with your HGSE faculty adviser and dissertation committee. The requirements listed below include the three Ph.D. concentrations: Culture, Institutions, and Society; Education Policy and Program Evaluation; and Human Development, Learning and Teaching .

Ph.D. Concentrations and Examples

Summary of Ph.D. Program

Doctoral Colloquia  In year one and two you are required to attend. The colloquia convenes weekly and features presentations of work-in-progress and completed work by Harvard faculty, faculty and researchers from outside Harvard, and Harvard doctoral students. Ph.D. students present once in the colloquia over the course of their career.

Research Apprenticeship The Research Apprenticeship is designed to provide ongoing training and mentoring to develop your research skills throughout the entire program.

Teaching Fellowships The Teaching Fellowship is an opportunity to enhance students' teaching skills, promote learning consolidation, and provide opportunities to collaborate with faculty on pedagogical development.

Comprehensive Exams  The Written Exam (year 2, spring) tests you on both general and concentration-specific knowledge. The Oral Exam (year 3, fall/winter) tests your command of your chosen field of study and your ability to design, develop, and implement an original research project.

Dissertation  Based on your original research, the dissertation process consists of three parts: the Dissertation Proposal, the writing, and an oral defense before the members of your dissertation committee.

Culture, Institutions, and Society (CIS) Concentration

In CIS, you will examine the broader cultural, institutional, organizational, and social contexts relevant to education across the lifespan. What is the value and purpose of education? How do cultural, institutional, and social factors shape educational processes and outcomes? How effective are social movements and community action in education reform? How do we measure stratification and institutional inequality? In CIS, your work will be informed by theories and methods from sociology, history, political science, organizational behavior and management, philosophy, and anthropology. You can examine contexts as diverse as classrooms, families, neighborhoods, schools, colleges and universities, religious institutions, nonprofits, government agencies, and more.

Education Policy and Program Evaluation (EPPE) Concentration

In EPPE, you will research the design, implementation, and evaluation of education policy affecting early childhood, K–12, and postsecondary education in the U.S. and internationally. You will evaluate and assess individual programs and policies related to critical issues like access to education, teacher effectiveness, school finance, testing and accountability systems, school choice, financial aid, college enrollment and persistence, and more. Your work will be informed by theories and methods from economics, political science, public policy, and sociology, history, philosophy, and statistics. This concentration shares some themes with CIS, but your work with EPPE will focus on public policy and large-scale reforms.

Human Development, Learning and Teaching (HDLT) Concentration

In HDLT, you will work to advance the role of scientific research in education policy, reform, and practice. New discoveries in the science of learning and development — the integration of biological, cognitive, and social processes; the relationships between technology and learning; or the factors that influence individual variations in learning — are transforming the practice of teaching and learning in both formal and informal settings. Whether studying behavioral, cognitive, or social-emotional development in children or the design of learning technologies to maximize understanding, you will gain a strong background in human development, the science of learning, and sociocultural factors that explain variation in learning and developmental pathways. Your research will be informed by theories and methods from psychology, cognitive science, sociology and linguistics, philosophy, the biological sciences and mathematics, and organizational behavior.

Coach Deion Sanders, Colorado illuminate the pros and cons of wide-open transfer portal

As the spring transfer portal window closes tuesday for football, college sports has gotten its first glimpse into the era of wide-open free agency for players. there are concerns..

BOULDER, Colo. – The world of college sports officially entered a new era last week when the NCAA’s Division I Board of Directors approved a new rule that allows undergraduate athletes to transfer to new schools multiple times without penalty.

This means there’s now permanent wide-open free agency for players, who can change schools as they please, as long as they’re academically eligible.

It’s a big boon for college athletes. A record of more than 3,500 major college football players have been in the transfer portal in 2023-24, according to 247Sports . They now have more freedom to chase more playing time and financial opportunities where the grass seems greener.

But at what cost to college sports when these athletes have more freedom to leave teams than even those in professional sports? And what about the old notion that transferring multiple times hindered a student’s academic progress toward graduation?

“I’ve seen little discussion of this among coaches, athletic directors or NCAA officials in regards to the transfer portal,” said Richard Southall, professor at South Carolina and director of the College Sport Research Institute. “That’s because this is really about the oscillating migration patterns of employees, not about students‘ academic progress. “

Last December, the NCAA fought against this rule change in court, arguing that such a “perpetual and unchecked” free-agency model would be disruptive to athletes’ academic success. It wanted to preserve the previous rule of allowing an athlete to transfer only once without penalty.

In the end, a federal court injunction in effect since then forced the NCAA to make the move reluctantly − after several states sued the NCAA to make it happen. Those states argued that it wasn’t fair to restrict players from freely pursuing opportunities elsewhere, especially after 2021, when athletes finally were allowed to earn money from their names, images and likenesses.

And right now there might be no better example of the mixed feelings about this rule change than here at Colorado .

The turnover at Colorado  

There’s been so much transfer portal activity at Colorado that roster management became an issue, particularly at the running back position. On April 18, head football coach Deion Sanders praised his running back, Dylan Edwards, calling him a “tremendous asset” who needs to be better utilized.

This came one day after running back Alton McCaskill, a transfer from Houston, said he was leaving Colorado for his third school since 2022.

Then on April 22, Ohio State running back Dallan Hayden announced he was transferring into Boulder to compete with Edwards for playing time.

A day after that, Edwards jumped into the transfer portal to get out of Boulder, as did another Colorado running back, Sy’Veon Wilkerson, who had just transferred from Jackson State last year.

“We had one healthy running back for yesterday’s practice,” Colorado offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said April 25.

Shurmur then added another running back a day later, when Miami (Ohio) running back Rashad Amos committed to transfer to Colorado, his third school since 2022. But he won’t arrive until later this year, so Colorado had to move a cornerback to running back for its annual spring game Saturday

Colorado AD blames the attorneys general

As of Sunday, two days before the spring transfer portal window closed, Colorado had gained at least 33 new incoming football transfers for 2024, not including one who is transferring out already after previously transferring in from Cincinnati in January. But the Buffaloes also are losing at least 31 scholarship players to the transfer portal from last year’s team, including at least 13 who transferred in last year from other four-year colleges as undergraduates.

“This portal window has been brutal so far,” said one Colorado social media commenter after McCaskill announced he was leaving.

Rick George, Colorado’s athletic director, then responded to that comment by blaming the attorneys general of the states that sued the NCAA, including Colorado’s.

“Thank the AG’s that filed the temporary restraining order,” George wrote on social media April 17 .

The gallop to the transfer portal

This is the school where Sanders has flourished in the transfer portal , having upgraded the team roster with 47 scholarship transfers from other four-year colleges last year before the Buffaloes finished 4-8 in Sanders’ first season, up from 1-11 in 2022. In 2023, his transfer recruiting class ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to 247Sports.

But now with the rule change, the portal has gotten more volatile than before, making rosters harder to manage, even if the players leaving the team are mostly backup players, as Sanders has noted .

Sanders on Saturday called it a “gallop to the portal.”

“I just don’t want them to die along with − how many is in the portal?” Sanders asked. “Thirty-five hundred young men.”

He said he hopes they had a plan.

“That’s my problem with people who just jumped into the portal,” he said. “Just have a plan.”

Coaches generally don’t like this rule change because they now must brace for high annual turnover on their teams. Sanders has accepted it, however. He believes the transfer portal gives him a quicker path to success and downplayed his portal losses by asking, “What are we losing?’

His boss at Colorado also has been supportive of Sanders’ strategy but has expressed general concern about the academic effects of allowing unlimited transfer opportunities for athletes, as opposed to the previous rule of allowing a free one-time transfer.

“I think we’re forgetting about the fact that education is primary,” George told the Boulder Daily Camera in December, shortly after the attorneys general sued the NCAA to allow multiple transfers without penalty. CU said George wasn’t available for further comment.

There’s also the case of Sanders’ daughter, Shelomi, who recently announced she was transferring, too.

Deion Sanders’ daughter transfers

Shelomi Sanders was a non-scholarship player for the Colorado women’s basketball team this past season after transferring from Jackson State in the middle of the academic year last year. She had followed her father from Jackson State to Boulder but only played 11 minutes all season in 2023-24.

She wanted more, so she entered the transfer portal for a better opportunity somewhere else. She landed at Alabama A&M, her third school since 2022, when she was just a freshman.

Her father hasn’t said much at all publicly about her decision but was known to love having his kids around him on campus. By contrast, his ex-wife has applauded her daughter’s decision on social media.

“We’re hitting the road, y’all,” Pilar Sanders, Shelomi’s mom, said on TikTok. “We love Boulder, Colorado, and thank you. But you gotta put you first baby. Let’s go.”

Shelomi Sanders’ decision illustrates the effect of the rule change, which has been in effect since a court order in December. Before the change, Shelomi Sanders would not have been able to leave Colorado so easily after already transferring once – from Jackson State.

How the rule change helped Shelomi Sanders

Under the previous rule, Shelomi Sanders would have been required to sit out a year of competition at her new school or ask for a waiver from this penalty.

This would have deterred her from leaving the school where her father coaches instead of seeking better opportunities somewhere else, where she might get more playing time and money from sponsors. Even though she didn’t play much this past season, her Instagram account has more than 470,000 followers, and she has used it to earn sponsorship money from companies such as Marriott Bonvoy and Meta Quest.

The NCAA’s previous transfer eligibility rule impaired “college athletes’ ability to take advantage of current and future opportunities derived from their name, image, and likeness (NIL),” said the federal lawsuit filed against the NCAA last year by the state attorneys general.

More harm than good?

This is a liberating time for college athletes after previously being denied freedoms afforded to regular students. Many believe it’s long overdue, though some wonder if allowing unlimited transfers does them more harm than good.

The NCAA allowed NIL money for athletes for the first time in 2021, the same year it allowed players to transfer to a new school one time without penalty. Before that, NCAA athletes were tied to the school they signed with and were required to sit out for an “academic year of residence” even if they were transferring for the first time.

Now the rule change allows players to freely pursue better NIL deals and more playing time somewhere else. But many will find that the grass isn’t greener at their next destination.

By comparison, regular students don’t exactly wrestle with annual temptations to pursue more playing time somewhere else that might not even materialize.

“We’ve got to find a way to put some parameters around this, because I don’t think this level of freedom serves the players in a way that we need to serve them,” former Colorado and NFL linebacker Chad Brown told USA TODAY Sports. “Because there is something to be said for perseverance. There is something to be said for battling your way through a difficult situation, and if we just allow these kids to pick up and leave whenever they want, that’s not a service to these kids.”

As an example, Brown noted he redshirted at Colorado as a freshman before moving on to become an All-American and All-Pro player. Not being able to play right away didn’t discourage him, he said. “I just saw it as an opportunity to get better, to get stronger, to understand the scheme.”

And what about those degrees?

Even if players love the change, it’s arguably not good for them in general if they want to earn a degree, which is supposed to be the goal of college. That’s because it’s harder to make progress toward a degree if you’re starting over at a new school two or three times while many of the academic credits you earned at previous schools also are rejected by your new school. That happens routinely, at least for non-athletes, because each school has different standards and requirements.

For example, two non-athlete students at Colorado told USA TODAY Sports last week they about lost a semester’s worth of credits after transferring in from other Division I universities.

“It has been well-researched that transfers in the general student body many times lose course credits when transferring, which impedes their progress toward a degree,” Southall said.

The NCAA cited similar research when it fought the rule change in December, saying that it “defies common sense to imagine that students who transfer three or four times are somehow in a better position to attain their degree or succeed academically.”

Because graduation was supposed to be a goal, it’s also why the NCAA previously allowed graduate students to transfer freely starting in 2011.

'Schools will do backflips'

With undergraduates now transferring more freely than ever, pressure is expected to build on other NCAA rules that still apply to incoming transfer players. Those rules require athletes to make progress toward their degrees each year with a minimum number of credit hours – a requirement that gets trickier with transfers because schools often don’t accept all credit hours from a student’s previous school.

If players don't have enough credits accepted at their new school, they won’t be eligible to play right away. It’s one reason NCAA members wanted transfers to sit out a year of competition first after transferring. It was called an “academic year of residence” – to help incoming transfer players get up to speed academically at their new schools.

How will that change with no “academic year of residence” required?

“Schools will do backflips to figure out a way to maximize (the acceptance of) credit transfers,” predicts B. David Ridpath, a sports business professor at Ohio University and longtime member of The Drake Group, which pushes for reform in college sports. “What that does is often push athletes into certain majors or clusters them in eligibility-friendly majors. Overall, that is not good for academic efficacy in any scenario, but that has never been the goal of college sports.”

Colorado had an answer for this

Colorado anticipated a need to adjust to these transfer issues shortly before Sanders was hired in December 2022. That’s when the university announced a new policy that allowed a more generous acceptance of transfer credits from players’ previous schools – a policy that was mostly used by the football team and helped keep those incoming transfers eligible to play right away.

In the meantime, members of the NCAA Division I Council said in a recent news release that they remain committed to the academic success of players who transfer.

“Anyone who decides to recruit a student who already has transferred one or more times must make a commitment to the academic success of that student and ensure the student-athlete has a complete understanding of the academic impact of transferring to the certifying school,” the news release said. “Members will continue to study the impact of the policy with special emphasis on the academic success of all student-athletes.”

Progress in negotiations between Columbia protesters and administrators, university says

Negotiations between Columbia University administrators and pro-Palestinian protesters who've been occupying a campus lawn with a sprawling encampment "have shown progress and are continuing as planned," the school said in a statement late Thursday.

"For several days, a small group of faculty, administrators, and University Senators have been in dialogue with student organizers to discuss the basis for dismantling the encampment, dispersing, and following University policies going forward," the university said.

"We have our demands; they have theirs."

The university also denied rumors that the NYPD had been called to campus, calling them "false."

Some context: Columbia announced late Tuesday that it had given protesters a midnight deadline to agree to dismantle their encampment. But the university then said early Wednesday that it had extended the talks for another 48 hours . If no agreement is reached, the school has said it will consider "alternative options," which many protesters have interpreted to mean calling in police to clear the site.

A wave of pro-Palestinian campus protests is rippling across the US, with hundreds of people arrested at universities throughout the country this week.

At New York's Columbia University,  the epicenter of the demonstrations,  protesting students said they won’t disperse until the school agrees to cut ties with Israeli academic institutions and disinvest its funds from entities connected to Israel, among other demands. Protesters at other campuses have similar demands .

The campus encampments spreading across the nation have brought together students from a variety of backgrounds — including Palestinians, Arabs, Jews and Muslims — to decry Israel's bombardment of Gaza .

Here are the latest developments:

Columbia University : The faculty senate is expected to vote on a resolution admonishing the school’s president, Minouche Shafik, on Friday over several of her decisions, according to The New York Times. Shafik has faced criticism for authorizing police to shut down student protests on campus.

Brown University: The university identified about 130 students who it alleges violated a school conduct code that forbids encampments on campus. Students found responsible will be disciplined depending on their behavior and other factors, including any prior conduct violations, the university said.

Emory University : 28 people were arrested , including 20 Emory community members, during a protest at the school, Vice President for Public Safety Cheryl Elliott said. Troopers deployed pepper balls “to control the unruly crowd” during the protest, Georgie State Patrol said. A group of Democratic Georgia state lawmakers condemned the “ excessive force used by Georgia State Patrol” during arrests at Emory.

Emerson College: More than 100 people were arrested and four police officers injured during an encampment clearing at the Boston liberal arts college, according to the Boston Police Department. President Jay Bernhardt said he recognized and respected "the civic activism and passion that sparked the protest" after dozens of arrests.

Indiana University : At least 33 people were detained on campus Thursday following encampment protests.

George Washington University : DC Metropolitan Police were asked to assist in relocating an “unauthorized protest encampment” on campus, university president Ellen M. Granberg said. The decision came "after multiple instructions made by GWPD to relocate to an alternative demonstration site on campus went unheeded by encampment participants," she said.

University of Southern California : The university canceled its main commencement ceremony  next month, citing "new safety measures in place.” Nearly  100 people have been arrested  on the campus.

University of California, Los Angeles : A "demonstration with encampments" formed at UCLA on Thursday.

Northeastern University: An encampment formed at Northeastern University in Boston, where dozens of protesters were seen forming a human chain around several tents. 

Other campuses: Since last Thursday, several campuses have been protest sites, including the  Massachusetts Institute of Technology , University of Texas at Austin, University of Michigan,  University of New Mexico , University of California, Berkeley, Yale University , and Harvard University.

Protesters at the University of Texas at Austin asked to disperse at 10 p.m.

Protesters at the University of Texas at Austin were asked to leave the campus's South Mall at 10 p.m. local time, university spokesperson Brian Davis told CNN.

No arrests have been made as of 10 p.m., Davis said.

"There is no curfew on campus. Leadership asked that students clear the South Mall at 10 p.m."

Just last night, more than 30 demonstrators were arrested after UT Austin police issued a dispersal at the school.

Protesters at Ohio State University arrested after refusing to disperse, university says

Demonstrators at Ohio State University were arrested on Thursday night after refusing to disperse, according to university spokesperson Benjamin Johnson.

Johnson did not know how many arrests were made.

“Well established university rules prohibit camping and overnight events. Demonstrators exercised their first amendment rights for several hours and were then instructed to disperse. Individuals who refused to leave after multiple warnings were arrested and charged with criminal trespass,” he said.

Columbia University senate is redrafting resolution to admonish school's president, New York Times reports

Columbia University’s faculty senate is expected to vote Friday on a resolution admonishing embattled school president Minouche Shafik over several of her recent decisions, including calling in police to clear a student encampment last week, the New York Times reports .

The resolution would allow the school senate to avoid a censure vote during a critical time for the school, the Times reports, citing several unnamed senators who attended a closed-door meeting Wednesday. Some feared a censure vote would be perceived as giving in to Republican lawmakers, according to the paper.

A Columbia University spokesperson confirmed Shafik’s closed-door meeting with the senate on Wednesday but would not comment on the resolution to CNN.

 “The President met with the Senate plenary in a closed-door session for close to an hour, giving remarks and taking questions. She reiterated the shared goal of restoring calm to campus so everyone can pursue their educational activities.” 

Some context: Shafik has faced immense criticism from some students, faculty and Democratic lawmakers for her decision to authorize police to break up pro-Palestinian student protests last week— a move that resulted in more than 100 arrests .

Other students, Jewish advocacy groups and Republican lawmakers are slamming Shafik for not cracking down on protests — which they say have included antisemitic rhetoric — both on campus and outside its gates.

Several Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, have called for Shafik to resign.

What to know about the protests erupting on college campuses across the US

Colleges across the country have erupted with pro-Palestinian protests, and school administrators are trying — and largely failing — to defuse the situation.

Several schools have called the police on protesters, leading to the arrests of hundreds across US campuses.

The recent surge in protests have inflamed tensions among students, forcing leadership to decide when free speech on campus crosses a line. The atmosphere was so charged that officials at Columbia – the epicenter of the protests that began last week – announced students can attend classes virtually starting Monday.

Passover, a major Jewish holiday, began this week, heightening fears among a number of Jewish students who have reported hearing antisemitic comments at some of the protests. The anxiety comes as reports of  antisemitic acts have surged  across America since October 7.

When did the protests start?

The situation  escalated last week  at Columbia University, where encampments were organized by  Columbia University Apartheid Divest , a student-led coalition of more than 100 organizations, including Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace, to protest what they describe as the university’s “continued financial investment in corporations that profit from Israeli apartheid, genocide, and military occupation of Palestine,” according to its news release.

What are they asking for?

Columbia protesters say they won’t disperse until the school commits to a “complete divestment” of its funds from entities connected to Israel.

Other protesters are similarly calling on their campuses to divest from companies that sell weapons, construction equipment, technology services and other items to Israel.

Where else are protests happening?

Since last Thursday, a slew of campuses have had protests and encampments, as well as arrests. That includes the  Massachusetts Institute of Technology , University of Texas at Austin, University of Michigan, University of New Mexico and University of California, Berkeley.

Police   arrested nearly 100 protesters at the University of Southern California Wednesday after a dispersal order.

At Emerson College, more than 100 people were arrested Wednesday during a pro-Palestinian protest, according to the Boston Police Department.

Yale University police  arrested at least 45 protesters Monday  on suspicion of criminal trespassing, though dozens remained Tuesday.

Harvard University officials suspended a pro-Palestinian student organization for allegedly violating school policies.

Brown University says about 130 students violated school policy banning encampments

Brown University has identified about 130 students who it alleges violated a school conduct code that forbids encampments on campus, a university spokesperson said.

The university's Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards has notified the students, who were identified through ID checks, spokesperson Brian Clark said in a release.

An encampment of about 90 people had formed on the school's Providence, Rhode Island campus Wednesday morning, according to Brown.

"Encampment on Brown University’s historic and residential greens is a violation of University policy, and participants in the encampment have been verbally informed of this fact and that they will face conduct proceedings,” the school's release said.

Students found responsible will be disciplined depending on their behavior and other factors, including any prior conduct violations, the university said, noting students could face probation or separation from the school.

“The University continues to ask individuals in or in immediate proximity to the encampment to present their Brown IDs for two reasons: to verify association with Brown for safety and security reasons, and to appropriately address potential violations of policy."

Protesters at Emory University briefly clash with police

Protesters briefly clashed with police at Emory University in Georgia on Thursday, the university told CNN.

A confrontation between protesters and police outside the school's Candler School of Theology prompted an "increased law enforcement presence" on campus, according to the university.

"A group of about 100 people left the Quad and marched to the Candler School of Theology, where some protesters pinned police officers against building doors and attempted to access the building," the university said.

"The crowd ultimately returned to the Quad before dispersing."

Video from CNN affiliate WSB shows some protesters using large posters to push into a line of police officers whose backs are against the doors of the building. As officers push back against the posters, one demonstrator chucks their sign at the row of officers.
