Doing the right kinds of maintenance on your car will not only help it to hold its value, it will also help to keep it safe and reliable. However, by understanding what needs to be done to maintain your car, you can be better equipped to talk to your local service center about doing the work your car needs.

Managing Your Car’s Fluids and Filters

Step 1 Look for application-specific needs in your owner’s manual.

  • Some cars need to have their timing belts replaced at specific mileage intervals. Otherwise, you risk doing damage to your cylinder head.
  • If you don’t have an owner’s manual, refer to the manufacturer’s website for further guidance.

Step 3 Check the fluid reservoirs in the engine bay and add more fluid when needed.

  • Some vehicles have specific requirements for the type of coolant or brake fluid you use. Refer to your owner’s manual or an application specific repair manual to see what kind is right for your specific car.
  • To fill each reservoir, unscrew the cap and pour the fluid in until it reaches the “full” point as indicated on the side. Then screw the cap back on.

Step 4 Change your oil...

  • Refill the engine with the correct amount and type of oil once the new filter is in place and you have reinserted the drain plug.
  • Different vehicles have different oil capacities and requirements. Refer to your owner’s manual or an application specific repair manual to find out what type and amount of oil you need for your car.

Step 5 Swap out your air filter every year.

  • The filter just sits inside the air box. Remove it with your hand and set the new one in its place. Remove the cover and inspect the filter. If it's dirty, replace it with a new one.
  • Close the air box again and use the clips to secure the lid.

Step 6 Use the right octane fuel for your engine.

  • Most cars that require “premium” fuel will say so on the instrument cluster of the dashboard and over the fuel filler cap.
  • Check your owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s website if you’re still unsure what octane level of fuel your vehicle needs.

Step 7 Install a new...

  • Loosen the bracket holding the old fuel filter in place and slide it out.
  • Slide the new one into the bracket and tighten it down. Attach the fuel lines to each nozzle and reinsert the clips to hold them in place.
  • If you break the clips, you can buy new ones at your local hardware store.

Step 8 Drain and flush...

  • Most vehicles require a 50/50 water and coolant mixture. You can usually purchase pre-mixed coolant at your local auto parts store.
  • Check your owner’s manual or a vehicle specific repair manual to see how much coolant to add and what specific type of coolant your car needs.

Step 9 Clean your radiator with bug remover when it gets dirty.

  • Read the instructions on the bug remover you purchase to make sure you use it properly.

Taking Care of Brakes, Belts, and Hoses

Step 1 Replace your brake...

  • At that point, you can install the new brake pads into the caliper by sliding them into place where the old ones were.
  • Remove the C-clamp, place the caliper back on the rotor, then reinsert the 2 bolts that hold it in place.
  • Repeat that process on the other side, then put the wheels back on and lower the car.

Step 2 Change out worn...

  • Make sure to follow the diagram on the sticker in your engine bay (or in an application-specific repair manual) when running the new belt through the pulleys.
  • Use the breaker bar on the auto tensioner or apply pressure to the alternator to add tension to the belt, then release the tensioner pulley or tighten the alternator bolts in place to keep the belt tight.

Step 3 Replace cracked or damaged hoses.

  • Install the new hose in place of the old one and re-tighten the hose clamps.
  • Add a 50/50 water and coolant mixture to the coolant reservoir until it reaches the full line again when you’re done.

Maintaining the Electrical System

Step 1 Clean your battery contacts once a year.

  • Use the brush and mixture to clean all corrosion and grime off of the battery posts and the metal connections on the cables.
  • Wipe the battery posts clean with a damp rag, then connect the positive cable to the battery again.
  • Reconnect the negative cable last.

Step 2 Test your lights...

  • You can access blown out headlight bulbs from behind the headlight housing inside the engine bay. Tail lights are usually accessed through the inside of the trunk.
  • Unplug the wiring pigtail going into your headlight or taillight, then twist the bulb housing counterclockwise and pull it backward to remove it. Replace the bulb and reinsert it.
  • If you can’t figure out how to replace a bulb that’s gone out, refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual or an application-specific repair manual for more guidance.
  • 3 Check your battery. Your car's battery is essential for starting the engine and running electrical systems. Check your battery at least every six months, or more often if you notice any problems. Look for signs of corrosion on the battery terminals, and clean them with a wire brush if necessary. You can also use a battery tester to check the voltage.

Step 4 Check and replace...

  • The number of amps a fuse can withstand is written on the fuse itself. Make sure the new fuse has the same number written on it as the blown one you’re replacing.
  • If you can’t locate your fuse boxes or they don’t have the diagram, refer to the owner’s manual or an application specific repair manual to find the fuse that’s gone out.

Step 5 Replace your spark...

  • Gap the new spark plug using a spark plug gapping tool. You’ll find the correct gap measurement in the vehicle’s owner’s manual or an application specific repair manual.
  • Place the new plug in the spark plug socket and insert it into the engine. Insert it first by hand and then tighten it with a ratchet.
  • Reconnect the spark plug wire and repeat the process for each cylinder.

Step 6 Use an OBD-II...

  • Write down the code if the code scanner doesn’t give you an English description. You can look the code up on the manufacturer’s website or in an application-specific repair manual.
  • Use any error codes you find to help you determine if there is something wrong with your vehicle that may need repairs.
  • Once you make repairs, use the code scanner to clear the error codes and turn off the check engine light.
  • You can purchase OBD-II scanners at your local auto parts store, but they can often scan your car for your for free.

Handling Exterior Maintenance

Step 1 Check your tire...

  • Many tire air machines at gas stations have a tire gauge built into them.
  • Low tire pressure can reduce your fuel mileage and cause your tires to wear out prematurely.

Jason Shackelford

Jason Shackelford

Monitoring oil and tire pressure prevents problems. There are two basic car skills everyone should know: checking oil and adding air to tires. Keeping up with these crucial tasks prevents bigger problems down the road. Learning them saves money on repairs and helps your car last longer. So read your manual to know the right oil levels and tire pressure. Just a few minutes a week goes a long way!

Step 2 Use a penny...

  • If you can see Lincoln’s hair, you will need new tires soon.
  • If you can see Lincoln’s entire head, you need new tires immediately.

Step 3 Rotate your tires...

  • Front and rear tires wear differently because the front tires do most of the braking and turning.
  • With some tires, you can swap them from side to side as well.
  • If your tires have directional arrows on the sideway, keep those arrows pointed toward the front of the car. Do not swap the tires to the other side.

Step 4 Swap out your...

  • Slide the new wiper onto the hook, then rotate it so it is parallel with the wiper arm.
  • If you can’t figure out how to remove the wiper blade, refer to your owner’s manual or an application-specific repair manual.

Step 5 Wax your car...

  • First wash the car with automotive soap and rinse it thoroughly. Allow it to dry or dry it with towels.
  • Apply the wax to the car’s paint using the provided applicator in a swirling motion, then wait for it to dry completely.
  • Buff the wax off using a clean chamois cloth.

About This Article

Tom Eisenberg

To maintain a car, you should change the oil every 3,000 miles to help the engine run smoothly. Also, make sure you replace the air filter in your car once per year, which will prevent harmful debris from getting into your engine. In addition to replacing your air filter, drain and flush your coolant system once a year, and add more fluid to the reservoirs in your engine bay whenever they get low. You can also increase your vehicle's lifespan just by using the right octane fuel for your engine, which should be listed in the owner's manual. The Evolution of Vehicles

The evolution of vehicles can be traced back to the invention of the wheel in ancient times. From horse-drawn carriages to steam-powered locomotives, and finally to the contemporary era of fuel-powered and electric vehicles, the journey has been remarkable. The evolution has been driven by the human desire for speed, efficiency, and comfort.

Impact on Society

They have made remote areas accessible, fueled economic growth, and even changed the dynamics of warfare. However, they have also contributed to environmental challenges like air pollution and global warming.

The Future of Vehicles

With advancements in technology, the future of vehicles looks promising. Autonomous vehicles, powered by artificial intelligence, are expected to redefine transportation. Electric vehicles, with their environmental benefits, are set to replace traditional fuel-powered vehicles.

Vehicles, from their inception to their future prospects, have always been at the forefront of technological progress. They encapsulate the human spirit of innovation and our relentless pursuit of better, faster, and more sustainable ways of transportation. As we move forward, it is imperative to balance our need for speed and convenience with our responsibility towards the environment.

500 Words Essay on Vehicles

Vehicles, as we know them today, are the result of centuries of innovation and technological advancement. They have revolutionized the way humans travel, shaping societies, economies, and cultures. This essay delves into the evolution, significance, and future prospects of vehicles, providing a comprehensive understanding of their role in our world.

The journey of vehicles began with simple, human or animal-powered modes of transportation like carts and carriages. The industrial revolution in the 18th century marked a pivotal point in vehicle evolution with the advent of steam-powered engines. However, it was the invention of the internal combustion engine in the late 19th century that truly transformed the vehicle landscape, leading to the development of modern cars.

In the 20th century, vehicles became more than just a means of transportation; they became symbols of status, freedom, and personal identity. The mass production of vehicles, initiated by Henry Ford, made them affordable and accessible to the average person, further embedding them into our societal fabric.

Significance of Vehicles

Vehicles play a critical role in our lives and societies. They facilitate movement of people and goods, contributing to economic growth and development. They’re integral to various sectors, from agriculture and construction to healthcare and public safety.

Vehicles also have a profound social impact. They enable personal mobility, bridging geographical distances and bringing people closer. They’ve shaped urban development, influencing the layout of cities and suburbs. Moreover, the vehicle industry has been a significant source of employment and technological innovation.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

While vehicles offer numerous benefits, they also pose environmental challenges. They’re major contributors to air pollution and climate change due to the emission of greenhouse gases. The vehicle industry also consumes vast amounts of natural resources, from fossil fuels for operation to metals for production.

In response, there’s a growing shift towards sustainable transportation. Electric vehicles (EVs), powered by renewable energy sources, are gaining popularity. They offer a promising solution to reduce pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. Furthermore, advancements in technology are leading to more efficient and eco-friendly production methods.

The future of vehicles is poised to be as transformative as their past. Autonomous vehicles, powered by artificial intelligence, are on the horizon, promising to redefine transportation. They have the potential to improve road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and provide mobility to those unable to drive.

In addition, the concept of shared mobility is gaining traction, driven by the rise of ride-sharing platforms. This could lead to a decrease in vehicle ownership, reducing the number of vehicles on the road and their environmental impact.

Vehicles have come a long way from their humble beginnings. They’ve transformed our lives, societies, and the world at large. As we move towards a more sustainable and connected future, vehicles will continue to evolve, adapting to our changing needs and challenges. They stand as a testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of progress.

⚙️ College Essay about Cars: Useful Tips

Preparing for composting an essay about a car, you may wonder where to start and how to handle it. In this section, we will introduce some helpful tips. See what you should include and elaborate on in your car essay.

Just in 1 hour! We will write you a plagiarism-free paper in hardly more than 1 hour

  • Get creative. Some students may think that essays on cars are not the right place for creativity. Writing about cars should be full of some specific terms and descriptions of various car details. However, it is a mistake. Essays on cars can omit such issues but remain informative and catchy.
  • Keep your opinion to yourself. You don’t have to present a positive or negative conclusion about cars. You are not required to have an unequivocal statement when you write about such a difficult topic. In order to fulfill this requirement, you can even use a thesis statement creator to come up with unbiased foundation for your content.
  • Don’t try to say everything at once . Your essay has a word limit, so you’re better to find one topic to talk about. Focus on one aspect of the issue, such as environmental impact, and state your position with evidence.
  • Change an angle. If you are not interested in a topic but need to write about cars, look at the subject from the other side. If you are not willing to elaborate on ecological impact, write about races. If you don’t want to talk about sports, write about the invention of the first car. expository essay on how to care for a motor vehicle

Advantages and Disadvantages of Electric Cars Essay

Introduction, benefits of electric cars, disadvantages of electric cars, works cited.

We live in a fast paced world with constant need for movement to various destinations, which warrants use of motor vehicles for fast and convenient transport. From ancient times, vehicles powered by energy from hydro-carbon sources have been used to meet the need for locomotion.

Incidentally, fossil fuel is non-renewable, has fluctuating prices and pollutes the environment. This has prompted the emergence of alternative sources of power for motor vehicles, which are fairly eco-friendly and relatively cheap. For the most part, electric cars offer a near perfect answer to this dilemma. Nevertheless, like all manmade machines electric cars have some disadvantages.

Electric cars are motor vehicles whose engines are powered by electricity, unlike vehicles with internal combustion engines which use fuel. There are three types of electric cars: those that are powered explicitly by external electric sources, those that have rechargeable batteries and those that have built in generators to provide power for thrust (Gilles 202). Furthermore, electric cars are not necessarily powered by electricity generated by fossil fuel. Renewable sources of energy like solar and wind can also be used to generate electricity for propulsion.

In electric trains, the power is transmitted via overhead cables and then stored in batteries. On the other hand, electric cars are plugged into power sources for a few hours to charge the batteries that store energy used for propulsion (Piana 288). However, people are yet to fully embrace electric cars because they are still on a trial phase and the requisite infrastructure, like power recharge stations along highways, are scanty.

The most noteworthy attribute of electric cars is their eco-friendliness. They boast of having zero emissions of carbon dioxide, thus minimal environmental pollution. This is contrary to cars with internal combustion engines, which emit close to 20% of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (Scoulos 162).

According to Scoulos, “Batteries could gradually become an overall less polluting fuel source in the long term, if more electricity is generated by non-carbon, renewable energy sources” (161). Furthermore, it is cheaper to operate an electric car compared to a conventional car, because it is cheaper to charge a car battery than refuel a tank. Additionally, electric car owners are accorded various privileges, like parking fee waivers in public places, due to the eco-friendly nature of their cars.

Moreover, electric cars loose just about around 10% of their energy through heat, which makes them energy efficient compared to their conventional counterparts that lose up to 80% of their energy (Scoulos 163). On the same note, electric cars have silent engines thus they produce minimum noise compared to conventional cars, which produce irritating noise. In addition, since electric cars can be powered by energy from innumerable sources, including renewable sources, the depletion of fossil fuel cannot render them redundant (Piana 289).

Unfortunately, electric cars are not suited for long journeys and off road excursions. This is because they have less torque and can only attain a maximum speed of 55 miles per hour, which is significantly lower than that of a normal car.

In addition, electric cars are yet to be accorded the much needed infrastructural support, like charging and servicing stations along highways, to address contingencies that might crop up in the course of a journey. In fact, most mechanics find electric vehicles paradoxical because they are a rarity and interaction with them is limited to big cities (Gilles 201).

Additionally, electric cars are dependent on batteries that store charge which can only supply enough power for a limited number of hours. As a result, a full tank of a conventional car can give a driver more mileage than a fully charged battery of an electric car. Gilles states that “A Key problem that prevents their widespread use is that they have a somewhat limited range between recharges (less than 100 miles), and recharging requires several hours at best” (201).

In this regard, electric car owners have to operate within a given radius where they are confident of getting a power source and a service station. This confines them to established cities with the aforesaid facilities. In addition, since electric cars are noiseless they are prone to accidents because people with visual disability cannot hear them when approaching crossing zones.

In this age of global warming and economic recessions that inflate the prices of virtually everything, the use of eco-friendly and cheaper sources of energy to power machines has become paramount. Electric cars therefore play a pivotal role in the preservation of the environment since they have minimal emissions.

However, it is incumbent upon manufacturers of electric cars to carry out aggressive marketing in order to popularize these vehicles. Furthermore, the public needs to be sensitized on the advantages of embracing technology that reduces green house gas emissions. Moreover, there is a need to improve the speed of electric cars and power retention capacity of batteries, to charm the users of conventional cars to switch to electric cars.
