Role of media in Pakistan
Media is playing great role in every society. It plays important role in setting agendas of public. We all are bombarded with so much information all the day. Electronic media, print media and social media are some common types of media. Print media is the oldest media in this history.
In Pakistan, media is working freely and independently. In case of electronic media there are a number of channels are working including news, sports and entertainment channels. It is the responsibility of media to highlight those issues which are good for the public and discourage unethical factors of the society. Sometimes media besides spreading the root causes of any issue, contributes to multiply wordings over some issue and crises. Media should be very sensitive while presenting its country towards the world. Our media tells the world what exactly we are, what are our norms, values and culture. Being an Islamic country, our media should represent us in a good way towards the world.
Media enhance the knowledge of public and communicates all the happenings to the public. Media industry of Pakistan is growing fast with much potential and seemingly bright future ahead. Media should not use negative tools to increase their viewership.
Role of media in Pakistan is getting quite irresponsible; as there are so many talk shows and political debates on the screen all the time and sometimes they seems to be crossing their limits. Media should work in its limits and according to some rules and regulations. Besides spreading exaggeration, Pakistani media should resolve the matters with positive attitude. Media is supposed to be responsible for the present society, trends, norms, values and so on. People are what they see, around them. Media reflects the society and it is the responsibility of media to expose the country to the whole world.
Role of media in Pakistan cannot be neglected; Pakistani media relates dramas, movies, sports, news and entertainment and so many features to the people. Its dramas reflect society and happenings and issues in the society not only to the people of Pakistan but also to the whole world, news channels alarm the people about all the current happenings, within and outside the country.
Media has played very important role in reshaping, and changing the people in Pakistan. It has revealed the facts to the people about crimes and social issues and also informed the people about the issues outside their country and most importantly, media has shown the behavior of other countries to the Pakistan, The media mainly television has become the main storytelling vehicle and the journalists have become the key players in legend making and identity building. Professional journalists are responsible to create a sense of belonging and to encourage the youth of Pakistan to behave like a responsible Pakistani.
Somehow media, on the name of freedom of press, is completely going in a new direction. There is a great competition among the channels and it has gone to fierce conditions, that they have starting to use negative tools, too increase their viewership.
Media has been thinking to be a positive and sophisticated tool to talk about image building. When something comes about the national interests, it is the responsibility of media to handle the situations and prosperity of the country. Media is considered to be a watchdog in a democratic country. No doubt media is doing fine work with positive approach towards the people and society. It’s the requirement of time that our media should work for the positive and real soft image of Pakistan.

The people must decide, not the government
When we ponder over the term “media transparency”, a lot of things come to our mind. What is the definition and degree under which media can be completely transparent? If media is sought in the definition that it is a mere joint that connects the people to the information surrounding the dynamics of their country, media is bound to be totally unrestricted and unbiased. Countries around the world, including Pakistan’s major ally and trading giant, the People’s Republic of China, observe a policy of retaining information that is considered sensitive either in relation to their authorities or in relation to the sovereignty of their state. It is no new tale that Pakistan has been a keen advocate of the policy for a considerable time, however the Chinese influence has been drawn in greater emphasis under the establishment of the current government of Imran Khan.
Pakistan ranks 145 th out of a list of 180 countries under the World Press Freedom Index created by the RSF in 2020, 3 ranks below neighboring country India and ahead of both Russia and China. It is predicted that as India is under the current Modi regime which has been criticized for imposing authoritarian control during crisis conditions, Pakistan will seep through the cracks in the wall of media freedom and hold a higher position by next year. However, this does not exempt Pakistan from being one of the worst countries for media freedom and hence, the generation almost solely connected by the media uproars silently.
Pakistan has been said to be “under the establishment’s thumb” due to its influence in controlling and suppressing independent journalism. Examples have been cited in the argument as well that include interruption of certain daily newspapers, signals of TV channels giving airtime to opposition speakers being jammed and the treatment of journalists in most provinces across the state.
The government has issued a statement that it will be introducing a system of online regulation, which in simpler words would mean censorship. Censoring information that is propaganda can be promulgated as a right the government holds, and hence we will be focusing on latest developments for example PEMRA bans and so on.
When the media channels would go on for less than the entire day, they would not have to desperately look for controversial content from across the country but would only focus on a concentrated amount of news and art that is the talent of the people of Pakistan. As everyone speaks with their attained freedom, we ask the authorities to make sure that media remains what it is, which is by the public and for the public.
PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulation Authority) has been more in power and action recently. PEMRA banned a commercial by a biscuit company GALA, which has received constructive criticism from all sides. The ad featured Pakistani actress Mehwish Hayat portraying the cultural diversity of the Pakistani community who liked the biscuit through various forms of dance.
The authorities have deemed the commercial to be “indecent” and presented in a “bizarre” manner. The advisory has urged all stakeholders to stop the use of themes and content that does not link to the product itself for publicity and branding. This statement has been issued with a report to the Pakistan Broadcast Association as well as the Pakistan Advertisers Society. The digital community has raised a claim that the commercial had no sort of indecency and the decision to ban the commercial is a heartless use of power against artists. Citizens lashed out on Twitter by drawing a comparison between the success of Bollywood and the Pakistani media industry, with the belief that such bans were preventing the growth of the society as well as the promulgation of art in the country which is renowned for its outstanding preservation and heritage of art.
Similarly, a production of Sarmad Khoosat has gotten him into trouble and has been under restriction from being released to the general public because mostly of the threats the director has been receiving. The award-winning film Zindagi Tamasha has not been released because of the great involvement of the religious parties in influencing the standards upon which any sort of creative art form can be restricted in the country, even if it does not get a stay order from the Censor Board. Bans on apps like Tiktok have been around to and fro and have been criticized for portraying an undesired image of the youth. It is necessary to understand that Tiktok has attracted people from all across Pakistan even from the sparsely populated province of Balochistan. When these people are made aware that their favorite way of expression in a huddle of desperation and economic disparity is snatched without any detailed order to them, it would seem nothing more than a myopic exertion of authority that they can protest against through the power of livelihood.
From a citizen’s perspective, the media is too explicit in certain cases and a bit too restricted in others. In a developing nation, where ideas of westernization are flourishing and spreading like wildfire, if our expression in the digital age is continuously controlled, the ability to be Pakistani in Pakistan would become contingent. It is obvious that whatever the Pakistani community is producing is a reality of what happens within the borders. Everyone agrees that a certain level of curtailment is always permitted, but the public opinion should decide that, because if the purpose of limiting information is saving the public, then the general public should have a responsibility in deciding what is and is not for their welfare. The community of Pakistan would prefer media channels and drama broadcasters to go on for less than 24 hours, but actually feature content and entertainment that is presentable to all audiences.

Freedom of Speech and Media in Pakistan.
- July 21, 2023
Introduction Freedom of speech and an independent media are crucial components of a thriving democracy. In Pakistan, the state of freedom of speech and media has been a subject of debate and analysis. This article aims to assess the current state of freedom of speech and media in Pakistan, analyze recent legal developments, shed light on the challenges faced by journalists, explore the role of social media platforms, and discuss the impact of the legal fraternity in upholding these fundamental rights. The State of Freedom of Speech The guarantee of freedom of speech is enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan, yet its practical implementation faces various challenges. In recent years, the country has witnessed both progress and setbacks in protecting this fundamental right. Recent Legal Developments Pakistan has witnessed several legal developments aimed at safeguarding freedom of speech. The 18th Amendment to the Constitution in 2010 brought significant changes, strengthening fundamental rights and removing restrictions on media content. However, despite these advancements, certain laws and regulations continue to pose challenges. The Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) of 2016 has been a subject of criticism, as it has the potential to curtail freedom of expression and dissent online. Challenges Faced by Journalists Journalists in Pakistan encounter numerous challenges when exercising their freedom of speech. They often face physical attacks, intimidation, harassment, and even targeted killings, which create an atmosphere of fear and self-censorship. Journalists investigating sensitive topics, such as human rights abuses, corruption, or religious extremism, are particularly vulnerable. Furthermore, media outlets frequently face pressure from influential interest groups, resulting in editorial interference and biased reporting. Economic constraints, such as low wages and job insecurity, further exacerbate the challenges faced by journalists. Role of Social Media Platforms Social media platforms have emerged as powerful tools for freedom of speech and the dissemination of information in Pakistan. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube provide individuals with a platform to express their opinions, share news, and hold public figures accountable. However, social media platforms also face scrutiny and regulation. The government has introduced regulations to address issues such as hate speech, cyberbullying, and misinformation. While these regulations aim to maintain order and protect citizens, concerns arise regarding potential misuse that could curtail freedom of speech. The Role of the Legal Fraternity The legal fraternity plays a vital role in upholding freedom of speech and media in Pakistan. Lawyers and legal professionals actively engage in defending journalists, media outlets, and individuals whose freedom of speech rights have been violated. They provide legal counsel, file petitions, and advocate for the protection of fundamental rights. Additionally, the legal fraternity contributes to the interpretation and development of laws that impact freedom of speech and media. They engage in legal activism, participate in public interest litigation, and advocate for legislative reforms that enhance freedom of speech protections. Conclusion The state of freedom of speech and media in Pakistan is a dynamic and evolving landscape. While there have been positive legal developments, challenges faced by journalists persist, including physical threats, censorship, and economic constraints. Social media platforms have empowered individuals to express themselves, but they also face regulatory challenges. To safeguard freedom of speech and a free press, it is crucial for the government to ensure the safety of journalists, promote transparency and accountability, and strike a balance between regulating social media and upholding fundamental rights. It is through a collective effort that Pakistan can strengthen its commitment to freedom of speech, foster a robust media environment, and bolster democratic values in the nation.

Answer to the Question
Introduction
In the era of globalization, media has entered in social, political, economic, and religious arenas of society. It is an important source of building society via spreading perceptions and norms. Being a sole and dominant source of information and contemporary affairs, the media has been crafting people’s perceptions on several issues. Nevertheless, media has also emerged as the power for society’s helpless, unauthoritative class. Moreover, it has been an effective medium for mass awareness of the government’s social and political policies. However, media has also hampered the country in multiple ways:
- Spreading fabricated and partial pieces of news
- Distorting the peace of society by sensationalism
- Depicting the wrong image of Pakistan for their vested interests
To fix it, Pakistan must create grounds for the investigative journalism culture, secure journalist rights, and endorse a mature and objective policy in building Pakistan’s soft and influential identity across the globe. The following answer highlights the merits, demerits, and recommendations regarding the role of media in Pakistan.
Currently, Pakistan owns around one hundred TV channels. Out of a hundred, nearly forty-two channels are dealing with current affairs. According to the statistics of 2014, there are about 120m viewers on TV, 140m viewers on radio, and 30 m newspaper readers. With a large network, the Pakistani media has faced a crisis of credibility and authenticity. Moreover, in different regimes, the media has been the target of various successive governments to unveil bad governance. Thus, the media in Pakistan yet seems bewildered to pronounce hard stances against the social evils in Pakistan.
No doubt, the media has influenced Pakistani society to a great extent. It has emerged as the sole provider of news, information, and entertainment to the citizens of Pakistan. It is credited for creating an enlightened polity. Moreover, with the gain of power, the media has acted as a watchdog on government policies. The community of journalists would openly debate and criticize the immature measures taken by the government as an expression of freedom of speech. Undoubtedly, the media has been promoting awareness of the social and political issues of the country, unveiling the weaknesses of the governance, and giving critique policies of them. Moreover, it has evolved as the voice of society’s helpless, poor, and non-authoritative class. Numerous cases have gained justice because of the pressure built by the media on the government. Thus, media has played a vital role in crafting Pakistani society.
As a matter of fact, media is a double-sided sword. It has both – positive and negative – roles in society. Where the media has been a source of news and issues for the public, it has also been an integral weapon of the 5th generation warfare. Few channels and newspapers that the anti-Pakistani agencies fund create partial and fabricated perceptions and opinions based on their vested interests. As a result, a group of people comes into existence, in society, with perceptions of Pakistan’s ideology. Moreover, different channels and newspapers in quest of rating and TRP break incomplete and false news to the public, creating sensationalism in the state. Similarly, few channels have been involved in depicting the inappropriate face of Pakistan. The absence of efficient monetary agencies has given leverage to the media persons to use abusive language, hold destructive criticism, and execute character assassination of political and religious personnel based on fragile and false accusations. Thus, media has consequences on the polity.
To fix the emerging issue – the inept role of media, Pakistan needs to take severe and mature steps. Funding and strengthening investigative journalism through seminars may attract journalists to undertake large investigating projects. Furthermore, the regulatory agencies should work efficiently to ensure that the news channels and newspapers promote unbiased and impartial information. New pragmatic policies are the need time to enhance the system of investigation and collection of information. In addition to it, it should be ensured by each media house that they follow the gatekeeping concept strictly – filtering hysteria and sensationalism. Moreover, government and the monetary agencies must also introduce laws to protect the rights of journalists. Last but not least, all media houses must ensure they depict a positive image of Pakistan globally. There is no doubt media can play a vital role in exploring the potential of Pakistan and making it known to the world.
in Pakistan, the role of media has been enormous. It has a history of ups and downs. Despite many sanctions imposed at different times, the media has gained back its power. Now, media houses and journalists have to take advantage of their power. As it is aptly said,
“Power without accountability collapses a system in no time” . Helping the state grow politically, socially, economically, and religiously should be an efficient and unending role of media. Its credibility can be regained by abstaining from sensationalism.
Like any social evil, the role of media has a huge impact on society. Unfortunately, in Pakistan, media, a tool of sensationalism, has been used by politicians to build culture and norms based on their dreadful perceptions and opinions. To overcome the challenges, such as the circulation of fabricating and biased news’, the use of media for the political interest by the politicians, defaming Pakistan across the globe, and inadequate credibility of resources of information, the pragmatic and critical approach of the regulatory authorities is required. Pakistan must combat the 5th generation warfare through its unbiased and objective policies in the media stream.
