Are school uniforms a good thing or not?

T his week the coalition's new behaviour adviser, Charlie Taylor, advised schools to enforce stricter uniform codes to encourage better discipline. Oliver Laughland brings together Karan Varjivan, 15, a uniform-wearing pupil from Mossbourne Community Academy in Hackney and Mabel Richards, 16, from non-uniformed Fortismere school in Muswell Hill, to ask if doing up your tie and tucking in your shirt is a key to educational success.

Karan Varjivan: I go to school in Hackney, which is a really rough area. There's lots of people from abroad, lots of single-parent families with kids who don't get to see their fathers and mothers enough. A lot of pupils have really disorganised lives. I guess the uniform helps them organise themselves. Even being told off for not wearing a tie properly, not tucking your shirt in, that's a little bit of organisation that impacts on their school life as well as helping them to be more organised. Organising your apparel is a bit like organising your mind.

Mabel Richards: Do you not think that teachers are so stretched already that it's a bit of a waste of their time to always be having to police undone top buttons, undone ties – why does that matter when you could be dealing with more important things?

KV: I don't think it takes up a lot of their time.

MR: But what Charlie Taylor is advising is that schools be really strict with their uniforms. If they're going to implement a uniform then they should really enforce it – I agree with that. I think whenever a school sets up rules, of course they should enforce them, or the kids won't listen, but I see having a uniform now as regressive. It sends out the message to children that people in authority have the power to tell us to conform. I don't really think they do. Uniforms were first introduced in the time of Henry VIII with blue coats; education used to be about learning facts and never questioning them. I think today our education system has a lot more creative values, and not having a uniform reflects that.

KV: But my uniform hasn't stopped me being creative.

MR: Maybe through having a uniform you've learned to express yourself in other ways?

KV: Yeah, and I think that's a good thing. You can be a productive member of society and be creative without having to focus on thinking, "Oh, what am I going to wear to school today?"

MR: Like you, I think that discipline is really important, but I also think that there are things that aren't so important, and uniform is one of those things. I have friends who go to uniformed schools and they seem to spend so much time trying to fight the system and rebel; they find tiny ways of expressing themselves such as piercings. Not so long ago I was out with some people who go to uniformed private school and we went to Camden to get their nipples pierced. To go to that kind of length seems a bit mad to me.

KV: [At our school] they know that whatever happens you will get found out, and you will be punished for it.

MR: Even with a nipple piercing?

KV: They'd find you in PE! Believe me – they have their ways!

MR: Your teachers seem omnipresent!

KV: I guess they are. It's almost like it prevents challenging authority.

MR: Doesn't it promote teacher-student conflict, though? If I was constantly being told by my teacher to do my top button up, do this, do that with my clothing it might damage our relationship.

KV: Teachers learn to build up a relationship with you, and it's almost like you can approach them to talk casually as friends. We do joke about.

MR: So, because you wear a uniform, you feel that it encourages your teachers to get to know you more, and it makes you feel more confident?

KV: Yeah, it makes you feel like you come from a small community. It gives you a sense of belonging.

MR: But even though I don't wear uniform, and my school is really big, I still feel part of a community. I think people equate liberal for lax, but it's just not true. We are still united as a school, and as a community. People say uniform is a great tradition, but I don't think it reflects many of the values of today's society. I think to keep it for the sake of tradition is mad.

KV: But I don't think uniform is for the sake of tradition. I think it's more psychological – organise your apparel and your mind will follow. It's more that sense of belonging somewhere. Having this kind of business type of uniform, it makes us feel part of that business world.

MR: But they're children, they're 11 – why should they have to feel like they're part of a business world? Shouldn't we enjoy our childhood, and enjoy getting to wear what we want and express ourselves through our clothes?

KV: It gives me a sense of belonging somewhere, of being a part of something, because all this time I've felt like an outsider, and now it feels like someone's let me in, like I belong somewhere. It's improved my confidence – from being that kid who started off in nursery who, up until year 9, didn't exist at all.

MR: I've never worn a uniform, ever, from four until 16, so I don't know what it's like, but I think as a society we're always striving to celebrate how different and diverse we are – dressing everyone in the same clothes doesn't reflect that. By not having a uniform, I think I've been able to recognise that me and my peers are all different, we've all got different characters and different abilities. And I think it makes teachers recognise that as well I think.

KV: But your differences can be defined by you as a person, like in Martin Luther King's speech "I have a dream". He said that "I dream of a day when people are judged by the content of their character rather than the colour of their skin", so I think the same applies here. In Hackney there's a huge gap between the rich and the poor, but we all go to the same school, and by wearing the same uniform I think it helps people socialise, and helps you judge other people by their character – because it's not like, I dunno, people who wear this brand from Bond Street in one area and people who wear brands from the high street hanging out together.

MR: Do you not feel babied when someone else is telling you what to wear? You grew out of having someone else dress you when you were, what, three or four? With freedom comes responsibility, and with the freedom of being able to dress yourself, you become more responsible – it's made me think about how I present myself to the world – I have worn the wrong stuff sometimes, not unfashionable stuff, but things that are inappropriate and at my peril – it's taught me an important lesson. The sad truth is a lot of the time you might get judged on your appearance – say, at a job interview. Yet if you never really had to learn to dress yourself for a formal environment, you've just been given the clothes, then if you go in dressed inappropriately, you're not going to get the job are you?

3. Responsibility for User-Created Content

The user-selected content of such user-generated materials is your sole responsibility and not that of abcteach. If any other person, including children or students, uses your member account to access or use abctools or abcWorkshop or any other abcteach application, you agree to and assume responsibility for any such materials.

3.2. You are responsible for assuring that any materials, lists, documents or other documents created with this abcteach tools, resources, and applications, are appropriate, and you will not cause or permit the tool to be used to create harmful, vulgar, threatening, or otherwise inappropriate content.

3.3. If you share an abcteach document or user-generated document, by any means including any of the sharing features or applications or tools found on the Site, you are solely responsible for the content of the transmitted materials or documents.

3.4. If any sensitive materials or information or documents from the Site, or user-generated materials, are shared or provided to a child under the age of 13, you agree that you will first obtain express consent from the child’s parent or guardian(s) to share such documents with the child, and obtain permission and/or releases for the use of any user-generated information concerning the child or the child’s family that may be contained in such documents.

4. License Grant to abcteach

By posting information on or through our Sites, you automatically grant abcteach a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive license to use, reproduce, modify, publish, edit, translate, distribute, perform, and display the information, alone or as part of other works, in any form, media, or technology, whether now known or hereafter developed, and to sublicense such rights through multiple tiers of sub-licensees.

5. Charges, Payments, and Subscription Charges and Cancellation

5.1. We currently offer one-year and two-year individual memberships for single payment, and a monthly plan with payment of an initial setup charge followed by monthly payments. We also offer group memberships to schools, districts, and groups, the details of which are described separately. The terms and prices of individual memberships as they may exist from time to time are stated on the Site. We may choose to offer different membership plans. By becoming an abcteach member, you agree that we may renew your subscription automatically for the same subscription terms on the day your previous subscription ends, and you authorize us to charge you for the subscription term, unless you cancel your account prior to its renewal date through the cancellation process, as provided in sections 5.4 – 5.6 below.

5.2. We use third-party payment providers (such as CyberSource and other providers) for all credit and debit card and PayPal and similar transactions. We do not collect or retain information about user’s credit or debit cards or PayPal accounts or other payment mechanism, all of which information is retained and used according to secure procedures of the third-party payment providers.

5.3. Depending on the plan you choose, you will be charged a fee automatically through our renewal system. By becoming an abcteach member, you are agreeing that we are authorized to charge you the membership fee associated with the type of membership (monthly, yearly, or bi-yearly) that you chose during registration. You agree that we are authorized to charge you the membership fee at the then-current rate to the payment method you provided during registration. Please note that prices and charges are subject to change without notice. Fees each month may be modified using credit card, debit card, PayPal, or other payment methods available through your account. This includes: promotional discounts advertised in our weekly member newsletters, or on-brand promotional ads. Each renewal payment will take place on or about the anniversary of the original date of account registration. If all eligible payments methods we have on file for you are declined, you must provide us a new payment method promptly or your membership will be canceled. If the renewal of your membership fails for any reason, we will attempt to process your renewal for a period up to thirty (10) days.

5.4. Membership Cancellation. You may cancel your membership any time by visiting Your Account and adjusting your settings. If you choose to cancel your subscription or fail to pay any fees, we may stop your membership. If you cancel your membership or are no longer a paid user, you have the option to continue use as a free user.

5.5. UNLESS YOU NOTIFY US BEFORE A SUBSCRIPTION PAYMENT THAT YOU WANT TO CANCEL OR DO NOT WANT TO AUTO RENEW, YOU UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR ABCTEACH MEMBERSHIP WILL AUTOMATICALLY CONTINUE AND YOU AUTHORIZE US TO COLLECT THE THEN-APPLICABLE MEMBERSHIP FEE AND ANY APPLICABLE TAXES, USING ANY/ ALL ELIGIBLE PAYMENT METHODS WE HAVE ON RECORD FOR YOUR ACCOUNT.

5.6. ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. Termination of your account may include removal of your access to all offerings of the website; including password, information, files, and user content associated with your account, and barring any further use of abcteach membership services and tools.

5.7. We may terminate your membership at our discretion without notice. If we do so, we will provide a prorated refund based on the number of days/months remaining in your membership. However, we will not give any refund for termination related to conduct that we determine, in our discretion, violates these terms or any applicable law, involves fraud or misuse of the membership agreement, or is harmful to our interests or another use.

5.8. By applying for membership, you represent that: you are over the age of 18; that you are competent to enter into a contract; that you are the owner of, or authorized by the owner, to utilize the credit or debit card or other payment mechanism used for the payments; that the information you submit about your location and contact information is correct; that you will promptly notify us of any change in your email address or payment mechanism; and that you have read and agree with the provision of these Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. We reserve the right to decline any application for membership, or to change the terms and/or conditions of any account at any time, for any reason or no reason.

5.9. We may offer, on the Site or through other means, and broadly or to limited groups of potential members, promotional prices, seasonal pricing, free trial memberships, or other special prices and terms. Such promotional activities do not affect existing memberships, and abcteach will not provide or offer such promotional prices to existing members or users, and will not provide refunds or rebates or other price protections.

The Uniform Civil Code was first introduced in November 1948, within the framework of the Indian Constitution. Today, it is listed under Article 44 of the Indian Constitution and is part of the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP). The UCC was introduced to create a common law for all religions, castes, and genders in India. Given India’s vast diversity, the UCC was opposed by many. It became a bone of contention among the framers of the Constitution, and even today, it’s a highly debated and politically charged topic in India. Essay on Uniform Civil Code in 500+ Words

The Uniform Civil Code is listed under Article 44 of the Indian Constitution. It is a part of the Directive Principles of State Policies, which are not enforceable by law. These policies are meant to guide both central and state governments to make laws for the welfare of all. The UCC talks about one common civil code for everyone. 

UCC meant the abolition of personal laws—laws based on scriptures and religious texts. These personal laws regulated almost every aspect of life, such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, guardianship, etc. A lot of these laws were discriminatory and unfair to minorities and women.

The origin of the Uniform Civil Code can be traced back to the Romans, who governed themselves based on a civil law, and not holy texts. So did the Mesopotamians. They followed the code of ‘Ur-Namo’, which is the oldest law code in history. 

The US Constitution is another example, where every individual is equal. The UCC was introduced in the Constituent Assembly in November 1948, and it divided the assembly into two different groups; some were in favour, while others were against. 

The objective of the UCC was simple: One Nation, One Law. Although the objective was simple, the Constituent Assembly failed to implement UCC. India is a highly diverse country with a population of more than 330 million people.

Right after independence, there was constant chaos of religions, ethnicities, customs, and social structures. Both Islamic Fundamentalists and Orthodox Hindus opposed the UCC. They wanted Sharia and Shashtras to determine personal laws. 

They feared that the UCC would diminish their authority and give it a different term, ‘A Threat to Religious Freedom’ . To challenge the UCC, they warm up to social unrest in the country. DR Ambedkar, the founding father of the Constitution retreated and made the proposal optional. Therefore, UCC was made Article 44 and listed under the Directive Principles of State Policies. 

Benefits to the Nation

According to Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, ‘The State Shall Endeavour to Secure for the Citizens a Uniform Civil Code Throughout the Territory of India.’ 

• The implementation of the UCC will bring uniformity to the county. 
• It will uplift women and oppressed religious communities who have been deprived of their rights. Today, Goa is the only Indian state where the UCC is implemented. 
• Until 1961, Goa was a Portuguese colony, where they introduced a civil code applicable to everyone in the colony. 
• Even Islamic countries like Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco have codified personal laws as per their constitutions. Also, Jordan and Egypt have banned triple talaq.

In the 1980s, the UCC once again gained momentum. In the Shah Banu case, she appealed for justice after being divorced by her husband. According to Muslim Law, she was entitled to only 3 months of alimony. The Supreme Court ruled in her favour and Shah Bano was awarded maintenance.

The Supreme Court of India said, ‘A common civil code will help the cause of national integration by removing disparate loyalties to laws that have conflicting ideologies.’ 

In its 2019 manifesto, the BJP promised the best provisions for different personal laws from different religions.

Even after 7 decades of its introduction, it has remained controversial because of its misuse by religious forces and misinterpretation by politicians. Only by building consensus and bringing experts from all communities and faiths together can we ensure its successful implementation.

The UCC is listed under Article 44 of the Indian Constitution. It is a part of the Directive Principles of State Policies, which are not enforceable by law. These policies are meant to guide both central and state governments to make laws for the welfare of all. The UCC talks about one common civil code for everyone.

زندگی اللہ کا دیا ہوا ایک نایاب تحفہ ہے جس کی قدر آج انسان بلکل ہی نہیں کر پا رہا ہے۔ آج انسان نے اپنی زندگی کو مذاق بنا کر رکھ دیا ہے۔ کوئی زندگی کو ایک برا عذاب سمجھتا ہے تو کوئی زندگی کو حسین خواب سمجھتا ہے۔ مگر اصل زندگی کی حقیقت کچھ اور ہی ہے۔ دراصل زندگی خوشی اور غم سے بھرا ہوا مجموعہ ہے جس میں اتار چڑھاؤ لگے رہتے ہیں۔

انسان کی فطرت ہی کچھ ایسی ہے کہ وہ اپنی زندگی سے کسی بھی حال میں خوش نہیں رہتا۔ چاہے وہ اچھے حال میں ہو یا پھر برے۔ جب انسان کو اللہ تبارک و تعالی ہر طرح کی خوشی سے نوازتا ہے تو انسان خوش رہتا ہے لیکن اس کی خواہشیں کبھی ختم نہیں ہوتیں اور زندگی میں تھوڑا سا بھی غم آ جانے پر وہ اللہ تعالی سے شکایت کرنے لگتا ہے اور اپنی زندگی سے بالکل مایوس ہونے لگتا ہے۔

انسان اپنی زندگی میں صرف خوشی کی ہی خواہش کرتا ہے۔ جبکہ اللہ تعالی کی بنائی ہوئی اس دنیا میں انسان کو دنیا کی ہر چیز قبول کرنی چاہیے پھر چاہے وہ غم ہو یا خوشی۔ انسان اپنی زندگی کو صحیح طریقہ سے گزار رہا ہے یہ انسان خود جانتا ہے یا پھر اللہ جانتا ہے اور اس کے علاوہ کوئی بھی نہیں جانتا۔

جس وقت انسان پیدا ہوتا ہے تو اسی دم سے اس کی زندگی شروع ہو جاتی ہے۔ انسان کی زندگی آگے کیسی گزرے گی یہ انسان کی پرورش اور اس کے آس پاس کے ماحول سے پتہ چلتا ہے۔ انسان کو صحیح زندگی گزارنے کا سلیقہ اس کے ماں باپ ہی سکھا سکتے ہیں۔ ماں باپ بچے کے سب سے پہلے استاد ہوتے ہیں جن کی تعلیم سے بچہ آگے چل کر اچھا انسان بنتا ہے۔

انسان کی زندگی کے تین پہلو ہوتے ہیں۔ پہلا اس کا بچپن٬ دوسرا اس کی جوانی اور تیسرا اس کا بڑھاپا۔

انسان کی زندگی کا سب سے بہترین پہلو اس کا بچپن ہوتا ہے۔ بچپن زندگی کا وہ اہم حصہ ہے جسے دنیا کا ہر انسان کبھی نہیں بھولنا چاہتا۔ انسان اپنے بچپن میں ہمیشہ ہر حال میں خوش رہتا ہے۔ اسے کسی بات کی فکر نہیں رہتی۔ اسکول کی یاری، پڑھائی اور کھیل کود بس بچپن کی یہی زندگی ہوتی ہے۔

انسان کی زندگی کا دوسرا پہلو اس کی جوانی ہے۔ انسان کی زندگی کا یہ پہلو بڑا ہی نازک ہوتا ہے۔ یہ وہ وقت ہے جس میں انسان اپنی زندگی کو آس پاس کے ماحول کی طرح ڈھالنے کی کوشش کرنے لگتا ہے۔ پھر چاہے وہ اچھا ماحول ہو یا پھر برا۔ اسے اچھے اور برے میں فرق نظر نہیں آتا اور جوانی کا جوش اُس پر ایسا چڑھتا ہے کہ وہ غلط کام کرنے کو بھی تیار رہتا ہے۔ آج کل کے نوجوان تو زندگی میں چھوٹی چھوٹی باتوں سے ایسے مایوس ہوتے ہیں کہ وہ بس خودکشی کا راستہ ہی اپنا لیتے ہیں جبکہ اسلام میں خودکشی حرام ہے۔

زندگی کا تیسرا اور آخری پہلو بڑھاپا ہے۔ اس عمر میں انسان کو اپنی کی ہوئی غلطیوں پر پچھتاوا ہونے لگتا ہے۔ اس وقت تک انسان کو یہ احساس ہو جاتا ہے کہ زندگی کا صحیح مقصد کیا ہے اور تب وہ اپنے پرانے وقت کو واپس پانا چاہتا ہے جس سے وہ اپنی زندگی دوبارہ صحیح طریقے سے گزار سکے لیکن کہتے ہیں نہ “بیتا ہوا پل کبھی واپس نہیں آتا”۔

زندگی سے متعلق شعر

زندگی گزارنے کا سلیقہ ہر انسان کو حضور اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سیکھنا چاہیے۔ اگر ہر انسان ان کے بتائے ہوئے راستے پر چلے تو زندگی خوشگوار بن جائے گی۔ اس سے انسان کی دنیا بھی اچھی رہے گی اور آخرت میں بھی وہ کامیاب ہو گا۔
