Lions are the wild mammals of the cat family, Felidae. They are predatory carnivores who primarily live in grasslands and savannas, where prey is abundant. They avoid dense forests, which restrict their mobility and make it difficult to go after prey. Their males are particularly famous for their prominent mane. Lions always live in groups called pride, consisting of several males and their related females and children.

Despite being called the ‘King of the Jungle,’ lions have been classified as Vulnerable on the Red List of Threatened Species. This is because their population has dwindled to some groups in the Sahara and a critically endangered group in Western India. A major reason for this decline in lion populations is related to climate change as well as human hunting for lion skin.

Characteristics and Behaviour of Lions

Lions are muscular, large cats with varying colours of fur, ranging from yellow, beige, grey, reddish to brown. Some rare lions are white- they have a genetic condition called leucism, and are mostly the victims of trophy hunting. They all have long tails, which end with a tuft of brown hair. The most recognizable feature of any lion, however, is definitely the mane. The length of a lion’s mane determines their power over other males and is a show of fighting prowess.

Lions can show off their strength primarily because they spend most of their time resting. They need to conserve their energy, especially because when they hunt or chase animals, they use up short but intense bursts of energy. They stay inactive for almost 20 hours a day and spend the rest of the time hunting, walking, and eating.

They enjoy hunting down and eating other animals like deer, antelope, zebra, buffalo, giraffe. They avoid animals that can easily fight back, like fully grown elephants or rhinos. However, no king can rule without creating enemies. Hyenas are lions’ competition for prey, and they usually live in the same areas. Hyenas are bold enough to fight lions for their meals. Sometimes lions steal the kills of hyenas, and in some cases, it also happens the other way around.

A similar situation can also arise with Nile crocodiles, depending on their size and aggression. Cheetahs and leopards also compete with lions for food, but lions can usually win over them in a fight. Despite being strong, visibly dangerous predators, lions also have their means of communicating peace. Lions rub their heads against others’ to show affection.

Sometimes instead of growling, lions purr to express their pleasure or if they’re happy. However, we are most familiar with the lion’s roar- they roar to announce their presence so that nothing will stand in their way. They also do it to scare off any competition to their prey.

Cultural Significance and Interaction with Humans

Lions serve as an important symbol in many cultures and religions. It is branded ‘The King of the Jungle’ and is a symbol of nobility, strength, and courage in many parts of the world. In Africa, the depiction of the lion changes greatly depending on the part of the continent being referred to.

In West Africa, the lion is considered to be the top of the animal hierarchy and hence the king of them all. In the forested areas of Africa, the leopard is considered to be the king because of the lack of a lion’s presence. In some parts of West and East Africa, the lion also represents healing and a connection to the supernatural. In a lot of African folk stories, however, the lion is depicted as lazy and easily tricked by other animals because of its pride.

Ancient Egyptians, in contrast to African folklore, revered lionesses as fierce warriors and depicted their goddesses- particularly of war, healing, and cats- with them. People would invoke the power of these goddesses in times of danger when they needed protection.

This is because of the combination of a lioness’ maternal instincts and battle prowess. In ancient Mesopotamia, the lion was associated mainly with the power of a king. It was also the symbol of the goddess Ishtar, who was associated with war, justice, love, and politics.

In India, the lion is viewed as the king of animals and a provider of justice. It is, in fact, the animal present on the National Emblem of India. The Emblem shows the lions from the Lion Capital of Ashoka. It is a sculpture of four lions standing back to back on top of a pillar, on a base with intricate designs depicting other animals with importance in Indian culture.

Humans treat lions in many different ways, depending on their purpose and aim. A lot of people use lions as an exotic exhibit for circuses and zoos. These lions are often not treated well and are housed in small, uncomfortable cages that make them agitated and hence more aggressive.

Nowadays, many zoos opt for more natural enclosures to resemble the lions’ original habitat and make them feel at home. There are rules and regulations on how lions for circuses can be treated and transported, but they aren’t always followed very closely.

Lions have also been popular prey for humans when it comes to hunting. Killing a lion was often a king’s way of showing his power and gaining respect. In recent years, because of reduced lion populations, killing lions is deemed illegal in many places. Nevertheless, such trophy killing continues to take place, particularly with celebrities engaging in the act to show off their riches and influence.

Conservation of Lions

Because lions are classified as Vulnerable, many places have strict regulations on how lions are taken care of and used. Considering the lion population in Africa, they have several well-protected and maintained areas that are home to lion populations. Lions are kept in national parks, and measures are being taken to protect herders’ livestock from lions. This is so that the herders don’t lose their own animals, and hence don’t try killing lions as a solution.

In India, Gir National Park in Gujarat is the last refuge for the nation’s lion population. Because of this single population, Asiatic lions specifically are classified as Endangered. However, the presence of lions in the surrounding areas leads to plenty of conflict with locals, which can result in damage to property as well as the lives of humans, lions, and other animals.

A lion is a wild animal with four legs and they look heavy. The male Lion has a mane which makes them look heavier; whereas the female Lion which is known as Lioness has no mane. They mostly live in the jungle and live in groups. Their group is known as ‘Pride’, they have 5 to 30 Lions in a pride. Lioness and cubs also live in these groups naming pride.

They live together and also hunt together. They sleep for 20 hours and do the remaining task in the remaining hours. These Lions are especially found in the Gir Forest India and India is known as home to these animals. They are also found in Eastern African countries, Southern Africa, etc.

Lions eat flesh and sometimes they are also seen eating grass, actually, they are not grass-eaters but they eat when they feel indigestion. Eating grass helps them to vomit and they feel better.

Lions are marked as one of the laziest animals. They sleep for 20 hours and always prefer eating meat haunted by others. They are also very big stealers; they steal other’s food and have their meals.

A lion needs around 16 pounds of meat every day whereas a lioness eats 11 pounds. They prefer hunting big animals like buffalo, zebra, etc.

In some parts of the world lions also hunt human beings and they are especially found in Africa.

All of the living creatures are different from one another. Some of them are carnivorous whereas some are herbivores. They together make a balance in the ecosystem. They follow a cycle; the herbivorous animals eat grass and plants and the carnivorous animals eat them. The above mention reasons make the Lion the best and one of the most powerful animals. Barbary lion

They are especially found in North Africa; it is a rare breed of Lion family. The other names of a Barbary lion are Atlas lion, Egyptian lion, and North African lion.

They are considered to be the biggest of the Lion species and their weight varies from 250 kg to 300 kg.

Asiatic lion

The name itself defines its place and it is mainly found in India in the Gir National park. It is the largest surviving species of Lions in the world.

They are a bit short in comparison to African Lions and they are spread in an area of 20,000 km. They weigh up to 190kg (male) and 120kg (female).

Asiatic lions have a double-layered longitudinal fold near their stomach and belly area. This gives them a new look and they also have less hair as compared to an African lion. Due to the presence of fewer hairs near the neck area their ears are easily visible. This makes them look different.

West African lion

Panthera leo leo is especially found in West Africa and is one of the rarest breeds. In the beginning, it was found in entire Africa but now it is limited up to some areas. The population of this breed has decreased continuously. It was also marked in the Red List. These types of lions have no mane and they live in small pride.

Transvaal lion

The lion which is also known as Panthera leo Kruger is commonly found in South Africa. In some parts, it is also known as Southeastern lion. They are comparatively big and can weigh up to 550 pounds (male) and 400 pounds (female). They have a lot of names and its color turns darker as per age. All lions are born hunters but Transvaal is known as the best because of their body structure. Their body length can extend up to 10 feet, they live up to 13 to 25 years like other lions. They are white toned which makes them look more attractive.

Also known as Panthera leo azandica and central African lion. They are found in Uganda. The only difference of Congo lion is their mane which is of dark tone; whereas others have different colour tones depending on their age and some other factors. But Congo has a dark-toned mane which makes it different from others.

Why Lions are in Danger?

Some major reasons behind why some species in the red list are;

• Hunting was not illegal before and in old days people use to go for hunting and it was a matter of pride to hunt a lion. So, this is one of the major reasons.
• Overpopulation, the world is growing and people are expanding there are as a result new industries and residential areas are build, and forests are demolished.
• Used in medicinal purposes, at some places lions and tigers were hunted illegally for medicinal purposes which also affected their number.

We should contribute our part to save our animals; either it is a lion or a Tiger. All of us have the right to live and we should understand that the earth is not our own property. Animals and other living creatures have equal rights to live. Lions are the pride of the jungle and should be saved.

Animals dominate the forest area. There are so many categories and species of animals. From predators to prey, from birds to reptiles to mammals, the count is infinite.

The relationship between a predator and a prey has been down to a many years starting from the age of dinosaurs.

In today’s times the prey forms the second bas of the pyramid of food chain whereas the predators sit on the top. The first base belongs to the primary food suppliers that are plants and trees.

‘ Lion ‘ is a common name that we have heard right from our nursery classes. He is known to be the ‘ king of the forest ‘. Common right?

• Its scientific name is Panthera Leo
• It’s one of the big cats of the femidae family. Other members of this family include our common house cats. But they form a smaller domestic species
• Hence truly we can see domestic cats are distant relatives of the lions and they bear very common similarities in their behavior and posture due to this reason.
• Lion are of two types- male and female.

Female lions also known as lioness don’t look as majestic as the male lion. They have lesser hair on their body and are smaller in body dimensions.

Male lions are bigger in proportion, have a good amount of fur and mane and look very majestic

Lions can be divided according to the regions in which they survive. Their looks and body proportions also undergo a bit of a change when the region changes.

African lions  – lions living in the areas of Namibia and surrounding lands are a bit bigger in body proportions. They are more ferocious hunters as well.

Their mane is partly black in color. On the other hand lions found in India are smaller in body proportion, less ferocious and their mane color almost matches their body colour.

Lions survive in groups called pride.

Every pride has 4-5 female lions that catch the prey and provide food for the pride.

And every pride has only one male lions whose duty is to protect the females and the cubs from the attack of other lions and animals.

Males undergo rigorous and frequent fights with lions of another pride to attract the attention of females and to mate

The life span of a lion is 10-14 years in the open, because of the serious injuries they suffer from their fights their lifespan is greatly reduced

But in captivity lion can survive for more than 20 years.

Lions can go a maximum of fourteen days without food and a maximum of four days without water, due to the body fat stored in them.

But occasionally a lion munches cucumbers and wild melons to replenish the water content in his body.

When do the cubs start eating meat?

The cubs start chewing on meat from the time when they are 6-8 months old. Before that they only feed of mother’s milk.

What is the reason that lionesses do not interfere when an outsider lion tries to kill a lion of the group and cubs? 

The only duty of the lionesses is to pass the best genes on to the winning male.

When their pride male is fighting another stranger male, their only task is to flee with the cubs so that the other male doesn’t attack the cubs.

They join the fight only when they see that their pride male has weakened the other male.

But if it’s the other way around( that is if the other male wins), then they have no choice but to let their cubs die in the hands of the overtaking taking male, just to give birth to the best genes possible.

How does a lion cub look after birth?

After birth their weight stays between 1-5 kilograms and they open their eyes after 3 to 11 days.

The mother lioness goes away from the pride to a thick undergrowth or forest cover while giving birth.

Cubs remain hidden for 1-2 months before they are introduced to the pride.

Who pays, and doesn’t pay, federal income taxes in the U.S.?

It may be true, as Benjamin Franklin wrote toward the end of his life, that “ in this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes .” But while we’re all in the 100% death bracket, the federal income tax’s impact on Americans is considerably more variable – depending on one’s income level, source of income, marital status, age, residence, homeownership, parenthood and many other factors.

The American tax system manages to combine ubiquity, complexity and opacity. With the 2023 tax season nearing its end, Pew Research Center analyzed IRS data to shed light on a poorly understood topic.

The IRS, by the nature of its mission, collects copious data on Americans’ financial lives. It makes much of that data available through its Statistics of Income program. We concentrated most of our research on the individual income tax – the federal government’s single largest revenue source, and what most people tend to associate with “paying my taxes.” (That said, for millions of middle- and lower-income Americans, the payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare take a bigger bite out of their gross income than income taxes do. Nor did we attempt to quantify the relative incidence of state and local taxes, such as sales tax and property tax.)

The IRS data we used was derived from a stratified probability sample of all individual income tax returns filed in a given year. IRS researchers then weighted the sample data for each stratum, or subpopulation, to reflect the total number of returns in it. (The strata were defined not only by income, but also by such factors as the presence or absence of special forms or schedules.)

In most cases the IRS breaks down its estimates into 18 groups by adjusted gross income , or AGI, plus a 19th group with no AGI. For much of our analysis, we combined the IRS’s AGI categories into eight larger groups, which made some underlying trends easier to see. Along with the IRS data, we relied on the Office of Management and Budget for historical data on the share of federal receipts from various sources.

All told, the federal government expects to collect about $2.33 trillion in individual income taxes this year, accounting for nearly half (48.5%) of its total receipts, according to the Office of Management and Budget . The IRS expects more than 168 million individual tax returns to be filed this year; if previous years’ patterns continue, about two-thirds of those returns will show some taxable income.

Taken as a whole, the federal income tax is progressive, meaning that those with higher incomes pay at higher rates. But the system’s progressivity tends to break down at the very uppermost income levels.

In 2020, the most recent year for which the IRS has detailed data, all groups of taxpayers with $1 million or more in adjusted gross income (AGI) had average effective tax rates of more than 25%.

Average effective tax rates, defined here as total income tax as a percentage of AGI, were highest among taxpayers with AGIs between $2 million and $10 million (nearly 28%). The average effective tax rate for taxpayers with AGIs of $10 million or more was actually a bit lower (25.5%), mainly because they tend to get more of their income from dividends and long-term capital gains, which are taxed at lower rates than wages, salaries and other so-called “ordinary income.”

At the other end of the income scale, tens of millions of Americans owed little or no federal income tax, especially after factoring in the effects of refundable tax credits, such as the child and earned-income credits.

In 2020, the IRS received nearly 5.3 million individual tax returns that showed no AGI and hence no taxable income. (About 4,600 of those people ended up paying tax anyway, mainly due to the alternative minimum tax .) Another 60.3 million returns showed AGIs of less than $30,000. The average effective tax rate for those taxpayers was 1.5%, even before refundable tax credits were applied.

Millions of Americans actually get money from the IRS, largely due to refundable tax credits. (This is distinct from the refunds eagerly awaited by legions of taxpayers, which typically result from more tax being withheld from people’s paychecks than they end up owing.)

Credits are used to offset taxes owed – not only income tax but certain other taxes, too, such as the self-employment tax or the penalty tax on early withdrawals from qualified retirement plans. But if the value of refundable tax credits exceeds total taxes owed, the excess can be paid out to the taxpayer. This primarily benefits people with lower incomes.

After refundable credits were figured in, taxpayers with AGIs below $30,000 (including those with no AGI or with negative AGI) collectively got back more than $78.6 billion from the IRS in 2020. For taxpayers with AGIs between $1 and $15,000, their average effective tax rate fell to ‑14.8%, from ‑10.3% in 2019, largely due to coronavirus pandemic-related federal relief efforts, some of which were structured as tax credits.

Since 2000, there has been a downward trend in average effective tax rates for all but the richest taxpayers – those with AGIs of $10 million or more. But the three major tax law overhauls during this period have affected different classes of taxpayers quite differently:

• The Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 benefited the highest-income taxpayers the most. Those with AGIs of $5 million or more saw their average effective tax rate drop from 27.2% in 2002 to 23.2% in 2003. Taxpayers with AGIs between $500,000 and $5 million saw their average effective rates fall from 28.8% to 25.5%. Other taxpayers with lower incomes experienced much smaller rate cuts.
• In 2013, by contrast, two provisions aimed squarely at higher-income taxpayers kicked in. A new net investment income tax and Medicare surtax , enacted to help pay for the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”), helped raise the average effective tax rate on the highest-earning taxpayers (those with AGIs of $5 million or more) from 20.7% in 2012 to 27% the following year. Those with AGIs ranging from $500,000 to under $5 million also saw their average effective tax rate increase, from 24.2% to 27.5%, while other groups experienced little to no change.
• The Trump tax cuts of 2017 , which altered provisions throughout the tax code, had their biggest impact on upper-middle-income taxpayers: those with AGIs of at least $200,000 but less than $500,000. Although average effective tax rates fell for all income groups, they fell the most for that upper-middle group, from 19.2% in 2017 to 16.6% in 2018.

Besides average effective tax rates, another way to look at the relative burden on different groups of taxpayers is by examining how much of the total bill they foot.

The IRS collected $1.66 trillion in individual income taxes in 2020 (excluding the $78.6 billion in negative tax liabilities referred to earlier). Close to 54% of that sum came from taxpayers with AGIs between $100,000 and $1 million – a group that accounted for just under a fifth of all returns filed (31.3 million), and about 30% of all taxable returns (31 million).

At the very top of the income ladder, only 0.02% of all returns filed in 2020 showed AGIs of $10 million or more, but those taxpayers collectively paid $210.2 billion in taxes after refundable tax credits, or 12.6% of total individual income tax collections.

Corporate tax brings in smaller share of federal revenues

Although the focus this time of year is on individual income taxes, corporate income taxes are also a significant source of federal revenue. This year, the Office of Management and Budget projects that the government will collect $546 billion in corporate taxes, or 11.4% of estimated total receipts. That’s less than half the corporate-tax share of total revenues that prevailed in the 1950s.

Several big corporations, including Amazon, Nike and FedEx, have come under fire in recent years for paying little to no income tax . But comparing corporate and individual income taxes is tricky. For one thing, corporations can report income and taxes differently to the IRS than they do publicly to investors. They can also spread losses in a given year across several years’ worth of taxes – meaning, in effect, that taxes due on this year’s profits can be offset by a previous year’s losses .

Also, some types of business income generally aren’t taxed through the corporate income tax at all. Sole proprietorships, partnerships and entities called “S corporations” pass their income (or loss) through to their owner or owners, who include it in their individual taxes. In 2020, 9 million taxpayers reported income or losses from partnerships and S corporations, and 27.7 million reported income or losses as sole proprietors or self-employed professionals.

The rules governing what constitutes business or individual income, and how it should be taxed, are only part of what makes the U.S. tax code as complex as it is. One rough measure of that complexity: The printed version of the 2021 edition of the Internal Revenue Code runs a total of 4,074 pages, excluding front matter. More than half of those pages (2,448) are devoted to the income tax alone.

The tax code’s complexity is one of the biggest things Americans dislike about it. In a recent Pew Research Center survey , 53% of U.S. adults said the system’s complexity bothered them a lot. Larger shares, however, said they were bothered a lot by the feeling that some corporations and wealthy people don’t pay their fair share of taxes (61% and 60%, respectively). By contrast, 38% said they were bothered a lot by the amount they personally paid.
