Essay on Mobile Phones: 400 Words

When telephone was first introduced in the world in the 1950s, people were keenly interested in it. As an easier way of communication, telephone has its own merit. Of late, the introduction of mobiles makes an easy access to communication. It is in fact inevitable in the present day of hurry and business. People have warmly accepted mobiles as the blessing of science. There is little doubt that without the use of mobiles none is nowadays able to lead one’s life quite normally. One is capable of communicating with people, staying far away very quickly. Thus many a problem can be well- solved by way of using these mobiles.

But everything has its merit and demerit. As science is a bane as well as a boon, mobiles are to some extent to be cursed. People, especially the young generation, have been abusing mobiles. They not only chat in an unexpected way but also indulge themselves in leading immoral life by abusing mobiles. Apart from this, several mercenary companies exploit the advantage of mobiles to meet their selfish ends. They do business through mobiles. As a result, young people have been misguided. To use mobiles is for them to be up to date. They avail themselves of the opportunity of the internet connection in their mobiles and do whatever they like to do. Obscene video clippings and some other versions of immoral entertainment are now available in mobiles. Therefore, the students have now tremendous fascination for the mobiles. Consequently, instead of studying, concentrate on using mobiles for sheer fun.

Another demerit is that because of the excessive use of the mobiles different companies plunge themselves into doing profitable business. Consequently, numerous towers have been erected for the network of mobiles. It is well known that a particular wave which is responsible for the mobile network does harm to the ecological balance of the environment. It is evident in the pale colors of the trees and fruits adjacent to the mobile towers.

Thus, it is the time to be conscious of the abuse of the mobiles. The concerned authority should take immediate steps to stop immoral business which is proliferating in abusing mobiles. All should remember that the sole purpose of mobile is to communicate. Entertainment may be available in the network of mobiles. But there should be no immoral design. Above all, the government should restrict the use of mobiles, so much so that anti-social activities may not be done through mobiles.

Mobile phones have become essential tools for learning, enabling access to educational apps and resources. They allow students to research, practice skills with interactive tasks, and attend online classes. However, misuse of mobile phones can lead to distractions, such as excessive gaming or social media use, affecting study time and focus. Overuse can also cause health issues like eye strain and disrupted sleep patterns. It’s important for students to balance their mobile phone use, dedicating time to both academic activities and breaks, to ensure it remains a helpful resource rather than a source of distraction.

Uses and Abuses of Mobile Phone Paragraph in 150 words

Mobile phones serve as portable gateways to knowledge, providing students with instant access to a wealth of information and educational tools. They are instrumental in facilitating online learning, enabling communication with teachers, and sharing study materials among peers. Educational apps can make learning interactive and fun, catering to various subjects and skills.

However, the temptation to engage in non-academic activities like playing video games, browsing social media, or watching videos can lead to procrastination and a decrease in academic performance. Furthermore, prolonged screen time without breaks can contribute to physical discomfort, including eye strain and poor posture. Responsible use, involving setting limits and taking regular breaks, is crucial. Students should be encouraged to use mobile phones as an aid for their studies while remaining mindful of the potential for misuse, ensuring a healthy balance between technology use and other aspects of their lives.

Uses and Abuses of Mobile Phone Paragraph in 200 words

In the realm of education, mobile phones have emerged as invaluable tools, enhancing the learning experience by offering access to e-books, online tutorials, and educational applications that cover a broad spectrum of subjects. They facilitate virtual classrooms, allowing for seamless interaction between teachers and students, and the exchange of resources and feedback in real-time. Moreover, mobile technology supports collaborative learning, as students can work on projects, share ideas, and solve problems together, regardless of physical distances.

Despite these advantages, the misuse of mobile phones poses significant challenges. Excessive indulgence in entertainment apps, social media, and online gaming can divert attention from academic pursuits, leading to poor time management and reduced academic outcomes. Additionally, the constant exposure to screens can lead to health issues, such as eye strain, headaches, and sleep disturbances. The key to maximizing the benefits of mobile phones in an academic context lies in disciplined usage.

It is imperative for students to cultivate self-regulation, allocating specific times for study and leisure, ensuring mobile phones are tools for educational enhancement rather than distractions. Emphasizing the responsible use of technology within educational settings can help mitigate its negative impacts, promoting a balanced and productive learning environment.

Uses and Abuses of Mobile Phone Paragraph in 250 words

Mobile phones have transformed our lives in many ways, particularly in the field of education. They serve as a gateway to unlimited information and learning resources. Students can easily access educational apps, e-books, online tutorials, and much more, making learning more interactive and fun. These tools not only provide a wealth of knowledge but also help in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Additionally, mobile phones facilitate efficient communication between teachers and students, allowing for instant feedback and support.

However, the misuse of mobile phones can lead to several issues. Excessive screen time can harm students’ physical health, causing eye strain, poor posture, and even sleep disturbances. It can also distract them from their studies, with social media and games taking up time that could be used for learning. Furthermore, the anonymity and accessibility of the internet can expose students to harmful content and cyberbullying, which can have severe psychological effects.

Therefore, it is crucial to maintain a balance. Proper guidance and regulations regarding mobile phone usage can help mitigate its negative impacts. Encouraging responsible use and setting specific times for academic activities can harness the educational benefits of mobile phones while minimizing their drawbacks.

Uses and Abuses of Mobile Phone Paragraph in 300 words

The advent of mobile phones has revolutionized the way education is imparted and received. With just a few clicks, students have the world of knowledge at their fingertips. Mobile phones offer numerous educational apps, online libraries, and platforms for virtual classrooms, making education more accessible and inclusive. These technologies cater to various learning styles and needs, enabling personalized learning experiences. Furthermore, mobile phones enhance collaborative learning through group chats and online project tools, fostering teamwork and communication skills among students.

However, the overuse and dependency on mobile phones can have adverse effects. It can lead to addiction, where students find it hard to concentrate on their studies without checking their phones frequently. This addiction can significantly reduce their academic performance and limit their social interactions, leading to isolation. The easy access to the internet also poses risks of misinformation and exposure to inappropriate content, which can mislead and harm young minds. Moreover, the misuse of mobile phones for cheating during exams undermines the integrity of the educational process.

To counter these challenges, it’s imperative to instill digital literacy and ethics in students from an early age. Schools and parents should play an active role in monitoring and guiding mobile phone use. Setting clear rules for when and how mobile phones can be used for educational purposes, encouraging breaks from screen time, and promoting physical activities and face-to-face interactions can help balance the benefits and drawbacks of mobile phone use in education.

By fostering a responsible approach to mobile phone usage, we can leverage its advantages to enhance learning while protecting students from its potential abuses. This balance is key to ensuring that mobile phones remain valuable tools in our educational toolkit rather than distractions or hazards.

Essay on Mobile Phone Boon or Bane – 400 Words

Mobile phones are a boon as they are used for a number of useful purposes. Nevertheless, there is also no denying the fact that a gadget as useful as a mobile phone could sometime be annoying and irritating.

Boon or Bane

Of course mobile phones are a boon given to the number of useful purposes they are used for like – internet, voice or video chat, documentation etc. Despite from the usual there are other uses like – social media and remain updated about the developments. Today every mobile phone user has a social media account, which he manages from his mobile phone. It helps him/her to remain connected to family and friends as well as other dignitaries like politicians, actors, cricketers etc.

But despite all the advantages, mobile phones could sometimes be annoying too. The use of mobile phones for various purposes and the accessibility of internet have compromised the privacy of the user. Also, every form that we fill today has a mandatory column asking to provide the phone number. Today the number of a common mobile phone user is available with many marketing agencies whose main aim is to sell their product. This loop hole in privacy has led to unwanted and unexpected marketing calls. People get annoying calls from insurance agents, marketing executives, etc, trying to sell their products to the mobile phone user, who is not at all interested.

Next in line is social media. Social media is a place where people share their views, pictures etc with those who are connected. However, this has also compromised the privacy to a certain level as someone undesirable could also peek into your account and send annoying messages; trailing you regularly. Such unwanted social buffs could be really annoying and some people are known to be trailed so regularly using inappropriate and indecent comments that they had to totally shut down their social media account.

In the end it would be more appropriate to say that mobile phones are both a boon and a bane. They are a boon when used appropriately and within limits but could be bane when they are used with mala fide intentions. Even a useful gadget as a mobile phone could be well annoying when it is used with the bad intention of deceiving someone, trailing him/her inappropriately on social media and other accounts.

The Panic Over Smartphones Doesn’t Help Teens

It may only make things worse.

Smartphones and social media are melting our children’s brains and making them depressed, or so goes the story we are being told. The headlines are constant; it’s enough to make any parent want to shut off every smart device in their home. Fortunately for my kids, who enjoy a good “cat attacks dog” video on TikTok, I go to work each day and see what adolescents are really up to on their devices. And it turns out that the story behind teen social-media use is much different from what most adults think.

I am a developmental psychologist , and for the past 20 years, I have worked to identify how children develop mental illnesses. Since 2008, I have studied 10-to-15-year-olds using their mobile phones, with the goal of testing how a wide range of their daily experiences, including their digital-technology use, influences their mental health. My colleagues and I have repeatedly failed to find compelling support for the claim that digital-technology use is a major contributor to adolescent depression and other mental-health symptoms.

Many other researchers have found the same . In fact, a recent study and a review of research on social media and depression concluded that social media is one of the least influential factors in predicting adolescents’ mental health. The most influential factors include a family history of mental disorder; early exposure to adversity, such as violence and discrimination; and school- and family-related stressors, among others. At the end of last year, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a report concluding, “Available research that links social media to health shows small effects and weak associations, which may be influenced by a combination of good and bad experiences. Contrary to the current cultural narrative that social media is universally harmful to adolescents, the reality is more complicated.”

Read: No one knows exactly what social media is doing to teens

This is why other researchers and I are not buying the stories being told about adolescents and social media. The most recent wave of fear was unleashed by Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation , an excerpt of which appeared in this magazine . Haidt claims that a “phone-based childhood” in the 2010s rewired our children’s brains and caused an epidemic of mental illness, especially among young girls; he’s written about this theme for years .

Of course, Haidt is not alone in asserting that these apps cause such problems. Social media has been compared to heroin use in terms of its impact and has been blamed for things such as declining test scores and young people having less sex .

These stories possess an intuitive appeal—social media is relatively new and makes for an easy scapegoat. But adolescence has always been a time of concern: It is the peak age for the onset of a number of serious mental disorders, and there are many alarming statistics about adolescents’ mental health right now. Caregivers are frightened, and people are just trying to do the right thing for young people. No one wants their children exploited online, or to be fed misinformation or sexually explicit and violent content. Pointing a finger squarely at smartphones and social media offers people common and unlikable enemies. But we simply do not know that these are the right targets.

The reality is that correlational studies to date have generated a mix of small, conflicting, and often confounded associations between social-media use and adolescents’ mental health. The overwhelming majority of them offer no way to sort out cause and effect . When associations are found, things seem to work in the opposite direction from what we’ve been told: Recent research among adolescents —including among young-adolescent girls , along with a large review of 24 studies that followed people over time—suggests that early mental-health symptoms may predict later social-media use, but not the other way around.

Shockingly few experimental studies have specifically tried to test whether reducing social-media use improves mental health. In contrast with the correlational studies above, experimental studies randomize people’s social-media exposure. If done well, they can directly address cause-and-effect questions. I get excited every time one of these studies comes out, hoping I’ll learn something new about social media’s potential impact. But I have also learned to ask a few basic questions of this research before I start to draw conclusions. They’re worth keeping in mind whenever you see a story reporting on these findings:

  • Does the study include young adolescents? Most of these studies do not. Chris Ferguson, a psychology professor at Stetson University recently analyzed 27 experimental studies on the effects of social media on mental health conducted since 2013; surprisingly, this was all of the experimental work that could be identified to date. The majority were conducted with adults or college students; only two had participants with an average age of 18, and one small study included adolescents with an average age of 16. None included girls ages 10 to 14—a group that has been at the center of recent debates on this topic. If we are going to make causal claims about social media’s effect on adolescent girls’ mental health, then we need well-designed experimental studies that actually include them.
  • Does the study focus on the social-media platforms that young people use today? If not, can we assume that the study’s findings are relevant to the spaces where adolescents spend their time? These studies have tended to observe college students or middle-aged volunteers, many of whom were asked to give up Facebook specifically, and then asked how they felt a few weeks later. (These days, teenagers tend to be on Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube.)
  • What is the outcome that was measured? The conversation right now is about serious mental-health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, as well as suicide. Most studies do not come close to using clinically meaningful measures of these outcomes.

A major problem is that participants are not blind to their condition, and are responding against a backdrop of messaging that social media is bad for them and that taking a break is good. Surprisingly, even given these issues, Ferguson reports that the evidence for causal effects across these experimental studies was statistically no different from zero. In other words, even this research, which was arguably primed to find a maximal link between social media and poor effects on mental health, does not reliably do so.

Listen: The problem with comparing social media to Big Tobacco

These results do not negate the very real fears that people—including the young people that we study —have about social media, nor do they negate the reality that many young people struggle with mental-health problems. Taking a safety-first approach to kids and social media is perfectly reasonable. I certainly believe that Big Tech companies can and should be doing a lot more to design platforms with the needs and best interests of adolescents in mind; I co-authored a report last year saying as much. The surgeon general’s office has also weighed in along these lines. Last May, it released an advisory, “Social Media and Youth Mental Health,” acknowledging that more research is needed in this area, but because “we cannot conclude social media is sufficiently safe for children and adolescents,” we should mitigate risks by requiring tech companies to emphasize health and safety, supporting digital literacy, developing “ Family Media Plans ,” and prioritizing research on social media’s potential impact. These are reasonable interventions designed to help people without causing undue alarm.

But the problem with the extreme position presented in Haidt’s book and in recent headlines—that digital technology use is directly causing a large-scale mental-health crisis in teenagers—is that it can stoke panic and leave us without the tools we need to actually navigate these complex issues. Two things can be true: first, that the online spaces where young people spend so much time require massive reform, and second, that social media is not rewiring our children’s brains or causing an epidemic of mental illness. Focusing solely on social media may mean that the real causes of mental disorder and distress among our children go unaddressed.

Offline risk —at the community, family, and child levels—continues to be the best predictor of whether children are exposed to negative content and experiences online. Children growing up in families with the fewest resources offline are also less likely to be actively supported by adults as they learn to navigate the online world. If we react to these problems based on fear alone, rather than considering what adolescents actually need, we may only widen this opportunity gap.

We should not send the message to families—and to teens—that social-media use, which is common among adolescents and helpful in many cases, is inherently damaging, shameful, and harmful . It’s not. What my fellow researchers and I see when we connect with adolescents is young people going online to do regular adolescent stuff. They connect with peers from their offline life, consume music and media, and play games with friends. Spending time on YouTube remains the most frequent online activity for U.S. adolescents. Adolescents also go online to seek information about health , and this is especially true if they also report experiencing psychological distress themselves or encounter barriers to finding help offline. Many adolescents report finding spaces of refuge online, especially when they have marginalized identities or lack support in their family and school. Adolescents also report wanting, but often not being able to access, online mental-health services and supports.

All adolescents will eventually need to know how to safely navigate online spaces, so shutting off or restricting access to smartphones and social media is unlikely to work in the long term. In many instances, doing so could backfire: Teens will find creative ways to access these or even more unregulated spaces, and we should not give them additional reasons to feel alienated from the adults in their lives.

The study was conducted in Gwer-West Local Government Area of Benue State to investigate the causes of farmers-herdsmen and use conflict that is common in many parts of Nigeria. Such conflict has caused a lot of losses to Nigeria, the state, and local communities. Using simple random and purposive sampling techniques, 80 farmers and 20 herdsmen were selected from communities. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The result revealed that the major causes of farmers-herders conflict in the study area include destruction of crops by cattle, contamination of streams by cattledungs, female sexual harassment by herdsmen, harassment of herdsmen by youths of host communities, cattle rustling by host communities, and indiscriminate bush burning by herdsmen Most respondents suffered various effects as a result of their mutual conflict. The effects on both sides ranged from physical, economic, to socio-psychological. Loss of material resources were more widespread among farmers and this include loss of crop yield and income of farmer, displacement of farmers, loss of lives and property and loss of products in storage. On the part of herdsmen, losses whether material or not-were minimal. .The study revealed that three types of coping strategies were mostly adopted by the two groups. These are problem orientated coping strategy (POCS), emotion orientated coping strategy (EOCS), and social support seeking coping strategy (SSSCS).It was found that the average use score of problem-orientated coping strategies (POCS) and social support-seeking coping strategies (SSSCS) were higher for farmers compared to herdsmen implying that on average, farmers use more of these strategies since they encountered more conflict-related problems than herdsmen. On the other hand, the average use score in respect of emotion-orientated coping strategies (EOCS) was higher (70.1%) for herdsmen than farmers (29.9%)implying that herdsmen basically used emotion-orientated strategies which is an indication of a strong emotional attachment to the cattle among the Fulani tribe in Nigeria. The result of the probit regression model revealed that several factors were responsible for the use of coping strategies among the two groups. Age, income, and farm size significantly influenced the use of most of the coping strategies among the respondents. The study recommends that coping strategies should be incorporated into the mainstream activities of farmer-herdsmen conflict management.

6 Ways Schools Are Managing Students’ Cellphone Use

essay mobile phone uses and abuses

A flurry of school districts across the country are tightening cellphone restrictions, because they believe students’ misuse of the devices has negatively affected their behavior and ability to learn.

In 2015, 66 percent of schools in the United States prohibited non-academic use of cellphones during school hours, according to the National Center for Education Statistics . By 2020, that percentage had jumped to 77 percent.

Many educators blame students’ cellphone use for being the top distraction in schools and classrooms . The constant use of the devices has also been linked to students’ worsening mental health .

The issue has caught the attention of federal and state policymakers, too. Some states—such as California, Florida, Indiana, and Tennessee—have passed laws allowing schools to restrict cellphone use. A handful of other states are considering passing similar laws. Congressional lawmakers have also introduced legislation that would require a federal study on the effects of cellphone use on students’ mental health and academic performance.

Liz Kolb, a clinical professor of education technologies and teacher education at the University of Michigan, said it’s unlikely that all 50 states will pass laws restricting students’ cellphone use, “but we’re seeing a lot more [movement] at the individual school level, where they’re trying to figure out policies that make sense [for their communities].”

At the district level, these restrictions vary widely. Some districts restrict student cellphone use anywhere and any time during the school day. Some allow use of the devices during lunch and in the hallways. And others haven’t placed any restrictions at all, often because of parent and student pushback.

Even in districts where there’s a ban, “there’s a lot of nuance” in how schools are addressing it, Kolb said. “In order for a full school ban to be effective, you really have to have strong leadership supporting the staff in enforcing it.”

Some of those nuances include exceptions for students who have a documented need to have their digital devices for health reasons, such as checking blood glucose levels if a student has diabetes. Teachers also have the flexibility to allow students to use their cellphones in class if they are needed for instructional purposes.

Here are six different policy approaches districts are putting in place to address concerns about student cellphone use:

1. Cellphones are restricted for all students, regardless of grade level

In Florida’s Orange County district , all students are prohibited from using their cellphones and other wireless communication devices, such as smartwatches, during school hours—meaning from the first bell to the dismissal bell, these devices must be silenced and put away in their bags. If a student is caught using a phone during the school day, the device will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the day. Depending on the circumstances of the violation, a student could also get detention or be suspended.

Flint schools in Michigan also prohibit all students, regardless of grade level, from using cellphones or other personal electronic devices. If a student is caught using a phone, it will be confiscated and returned to the student’s parent or caretaker.

Some districts provide technological solutions, such as pouches, to lock and store students’ phones during the school day. In other districts, educators have found creative ways to separate students from their phones, such as using over-the-door shoe holders where students place their phones during class.

2. Cellphones restricted only for elementary students, more flexible for middle and high school students

While restrictions on the use of cellphones and other two-way communication devices exist for all students in the Wauwatosa district in Wisconsin , there are more flexible rules for middle and high school students. Cellphones are prohibited all day for elementary students, but middle and high school students can use their phones before and after school, between class periods, during lunch, and in free periods. Teachers and principals have discretion for imposing consequences for misuse.

3. Cellphones are prohibited for elementary and middle school students, but more flexible for high school students

Elementary and middle school students in Virginia’s Rockingham district are prohibited from using personal electronic devices during the school day, while high school students may use their devices during lunch, study hall, advisory periods if permitted by a teacher and principal, and in between classes.

4. Cellphones are restricted only in classrooms, locker rooms, and bathrooms

Other districts, such as Richmond schools in Wisconsin, have restrictions on cellphone use only in certain areas of schools, such as classrooms, locker rooms, and bathrooms—to prevent bullying or sharing of inappropriate images, according to some district policies.

5. Cellphones restricted only in classrooms

Some restrictions are centered around classroom time only and allow students to use their phones outside of the classroom. In the Brush school district in Colorado , for instance, students aren’t allowed to have their phones out during instructional hours but can use them any other time. If a student is caught with a phone when they’re not allowed to have it, parents can either come to school to collect the phone or they can let the school keep the phone until the end of the day.

Students' cell phones are collected by school administration before the start of spring break at California City Middle School in California City, Calif., on March 11, 2022.

6. Cellphone restrictions are left up to each school

There are also districts, such as Meriden in Connecticut and Minnetonka in Minnesota, that don’t have districtwide restrictions, but instead have guidelines that schools can choose to follow.

For instance, in Meriden, the guidelines recommend elementary students keep their phones in their bags the whole school day; middle school students keep their phones in their lockers but can use them during lunch; and to let high school students have access to their phones all day but they must be turned off and out of sight during class time.

Other districts, such as Pawtucket in Rhode Island , allow principals or teachers to implement their own school or classroom rules around cellphones, as long as there’s a clear plan for allowing students to use them in case of emergencies.
