I’m giving the TOEFL exam in August and facing problems with Speaking(fumble alot) and Writing(fall short of ideas and vocab) Sections. Need to improve alot in these. Can you please recommend some good books or other resources that can be helpful to me in addition to the practise tests at magoosh ? Thankyou !

Speaking and Writing are the most challenging TOEFL skills for many test-takers. When it comes to TOEFL Speaking, it’s best to learn by example. Do what you can to find sample responses to TOEFL Speaking prompts. There are some good example responses on YouTube, such as this one from English Simple TV and this video from Magoosh’s very own Lucas Fink. But you’ll need to choose videos like that carefully– a lot of TOEFL sample responses you’ll find online aren’t so great– either they’re poorly executed or they’re not very authentic to the exam. So you need to be a cautious critic, imitating the kinds of answers that will work for you on test day.

If you’re not sure how to do that, another great place to listen to and imitate speech is TED.com. This website’s famous TED Talks include some fine examples of academic-style speaking. And they also include plenty of instances of people with foreign accents speaking in English –and speaking well! This gives you plenty of good speech to emulate.

As for Writing, TOEFL Writing is a lot like undergraduate-level academic writing. You can get a lot of good tips for this kind of writing form the English Department or Writing Center websites of American universities. Here’s a good custom Google search to get you started.

Don’t forget to also check out sample student Speaking and Writing responses with commentary from the TOEFL’s official YouTube channel and other official exam materials such as The Official Guide to the TOEFL Test .

I want to Phd in US, but i have B.tech Instrumentation degree. To apply for Phd should i do Master in India or can i go for Phd after my UG directly.

Many PhD programs in the US do not require a Master’s as a prerequisite. It’s definitely possible to go straight form your bachelor’s degree to a PhD program in the American system. Look around, and you should be able to find a degree that suits you.

It’s very difficult to improve your TOEFL essays just through self-study and books. So I’d actually recommend getting feedback on your essays form other people, either by hiring a TOEFL tutor or by getting free feedback from the members of a TOEFL forum .

As for books, I recommend The Complete Guide to the TOEFL Test and Cambridge Preparation for the TOEFL . Both of these books ahve great skills-building activities for TOEFL Writing.

Some of the official TOEFL books from ETS are a fantastic resource as well. The Official Guide and Official TOEFL iBT Practice Tests Volume 2 both include scored example TOEFL essays, with commentary from the scorers.

Both these books “have” not “ahve”. Otherwise, good info.

Hello! I passed exam three times and every time my reading and listening score is too low. What can I do? Actually, speaking and writing are excellent. Please help me asap. My next exam is in a month. What would you recommend to do?

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with your TOEFL Reading/TOEFL Listening scores. That can be frustrating. Often when you’re struggling in the first two sections of the TOEFL, your problems will be related to test strategy rather than English skill. By this, I mean that you may need to simply get a better understanding of the question types in these sections. If you haven’t done so already, make sure you know the TOEFL Reading question types and the TOEFL Listening question types . Also work on strategies that can help you eliminate incorrect multiple choice answers.

i want to study toefl but i don’t know how to star? any advice .

I’d say the very best place to start is with a practice exam. There are a number of free practice TOEFL tests on the web. The one I recommend the most is TOEFL Quick Prep — that’s two full free practice tests anyway. Quick Prep is great, because it’s made by ETS, the same company that makes the real TOEFL. In fact, all Quick Prep sections and questions are taken from past real TOEFL exams.

Once you’ve taken a full practice test, look at the answer key, and think about how you felt during TOEFL Speaking and Writing. Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Then start your TOEFL prep with those weaknesses in mind. Also begin your prep with your strengths in mind. After the test, you can start building on your strengths while also working in your weaknesses.

Hello Magoosh team

I have taken TOEFL exam, and unfortunately, I could not get a good score. In listening part, I have to say that sometimes I miss the lecture or conversation. I do not know what can I do for fixing this part. And I have another problem in this part. sometimes I have got the concept of the lecture but, I choose the wrong answer. I don’t know why. I have been taking lots of TPO test, but my score did not cheng. I could not detect my problem.

Moreover, in speaking part, It is really hard for me to talk fluently in English. I have the proper variety of vocabularies, and I know the English structure but, during I am speaking, I made lots of mistakes, grammatically. Another fact is that when I am talking in English my brain frozen up abruptly.

I’m so sorry to hear that you are not happy with your TOEFL score! I know it’s frustrating to prepare and work hard without achieving your goal. I highly recommend that you explore our blog for listening and speaking strategies that can help you to master the test. The TOEFL is not just about understanding English–it’s about how you take tests and use strategies to answer questions correctly! Make sure that you understand the strategies for answering each question inside and out !

It also sounds like you need more practice with both listening and speaking, so why not practice both at the same time? The more you practice, the more confident you will be, and the less you will freeze up or forget how to answer. This blog post has some great resources to use for listening or reading practice that’s similar to TOEFL material.

After listening to a presentation in English or reading an article from an English news site, summarize it out loud or in your head. Try to speak (out loud or in your head) for a full minute about what you read or heard. Summarizing is an incredibly important skill for the TOEFL. If you are speaking out loud, record what you say, then listen to it and try it again with even better pronunciation and with more details the second time. Try to mimic the pronunciation of the speaker, if you are summarizing a presentation. It may sound strange or awkward, or like you are mocking/insulting the native accent, but that’s okay! What feels natural to you will not be correct pronunciation, unless you have years of experience surrounded by native speakers. You have to sound strange and unnatural to change your accent. Try constantly to sound like the native speakers you hear.

And you can go beyond just summarizing! When reading or listening to a presentation, pause often to give your reaction and opinion on the material. Act like you are having a conversation with the author or speaker, although you are not really talking to them.

hello, my exam is on 21 june, I want to score above 100 and my previous score is 77. please guide me how I can get my targeted score. my reading section ie very weak I got 15 in reading 18 in listening , 24 in speaking and 20 in writing.

I’ll be honest with you: it will be difficult to raise your score by over 23 points in just a few weeks. If you want to reach this score, you should focus on improving your general English ability, immerse yourself in English as much as possible, and ensure that you understand all of the strategies necessary for success on the TOEFL. This research discusses the genre-based materials of English Essay for University Students in Lampung province. The goal of this study is to yield a product that will be used as students’ handbook at universities level. A research question is formulated: what are eligible contents to include in the designing material English Essay?. The students at English Department of FKIP Universitas Muhammadiyah Metro spread over different semesters and enrollments are taken as the subject. This is a research and development study with a specific procedure called formative; self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one, small group, dan field test. The result shows that many various aspects are recommended to include in the English essay book since they are believed to enhance the learners’ achievement. The result of the needs analysis shows that there are many aspects to include in the designed Essay Writing book. The next stages of this study are to process all phases as formulated in order to yield the validated prototype of the designed English essay book.
