The Best Day of My Life Essay

The best day of my life is my 16th birthday. It is a day I will never forget in my life. I consider it till now my best birthday. All my relatives and friends were present at my birthday party. The best part of the party was my grandmother was present there. For the last time, she prepared all the food items I loved eating. It is even more special as it was the last day that I spent with her, after which she passed away. I spent the most time with her and she also enjoyed herself a lot with me for the last time in her life. This birthday is even more special as it was my last birthday with my grandmother.

The best day of my life was when I went on a school outing with my friends. We ate delicious food and enjoyed the day to the fullest.

I woke up at 6 am and got ready for school. My mother dropped me to school. From there we went to a science park by bus. During the entire journey we danced, sang, played games, and did many more fun activities. We ate snacks and played games with our teacher also. When we arrived we visited the science city and enjoyed every bit of it.

Besides the science park, it was a water park, so we quickly changed our clothes and jumped into the pool. We enjoyed ourselves in the pool, and we kept on playing for an hour. After that, we took a bath and changed clothes. We had rice and chicken for our lunch. We loved the food. After the food, we returned by bus. During the whole bus journey, we sang and danced.

This day is memorable as I could spend it with my friends. The day was a day to be remembered. We had so much fun together. Everything is worth remembering from the beginning to the end of the journey.

Recently I received the best gift from my dad. Since childhood, I always wanted a dog, and recently he had brought me one. I was studying in my room, dad entered my room with a labrador in his hands. I jumped from my bed with happiness. I also started crying as I could not believe my eyes. My mom and dad were always against having a dog. But he brought it, and made it the best day of my life.

Significance of My Best Day

I still remember myself bursting into tears and happiness at the same time. That night I held Bruno the whole time. The next moment I saw myself buying stuff for the dog. I bought food, clothes, toys, and many more things which would make him happy. That night I held him tight and slept beside him. I could not sleep the whole night due to the excitement.

I looked at him throughout the entire night with utmost happiness and surprise. That day was the best day of my life as I got my best friend. A best friend who would never leave me. A best friend who will always be there for me whenever I need him.A best friend who will make me the happiest. A friend who will love me to the fullest. That dog gave me the ultimate happiness and, this is how the day became the best day of my life. I named the dog Bruno.

I am always looking for him whenever I come back from school. He always jumps, licks me, and wags his tail after seeing me. My friends come along with me to play with him. Bruno also became their friend.

The thing that I love about Bruno the most is that he can gel well with people. My sister was not that comfortable with dogs. But Bruno made her fall in love with him. They are now the best of friends. He would jump in happiness whenever he saw him. She would also run toward him and would pick him up. She feeds him food and always brings toys and treats for him. She loves her to the fullest and, at the same time he loves her to the fullest. This is how Bruno became everyone's favourite.

The best day of my life was when  my father surprised me with a gift on my birthday. When I opened it, I found a very cool bike. I couldn’t prevent myself from jumping because of joy.

I remember urging him to teach me how to drive it daily until I could learn to drive. How happy I was when I found him seeing me driving alone. And I liked a lot when he smiles after I perform one of the simple movements such as driving with one hand or doing any other movements. This day was one of the best days of my life.

I remember very well that I still have this bike even though it no longer fits me. But my memories with it are wonderful, I raced by it with my friends, and I also enjoyed a lot when driving it at sunset and the weather was humid and beautiful, and the air caressed my face and body.

It was such a great feeling, I might get to ride the bike again to get back this feelings from time to time.

There are many beautiful days in my life, but I recently had a very serious disease, Corona disease (Covid-19). And I was about to die. Therefore, I consider the day that I recovered from Corona disease (Covid-19) as the best and most beautiful day of my life, I even decided to celebrate this day like I celebrated my birthday, it is like a new birth for me.

The story of my infection with the dreaded virus began when I attended the wedding of one of my friends. I was very happy for my friend, and after I gave him a valuable gift on the occasion of his marriage, I participated in singing and dancing,

Everyone in attendance was happy, singing cheerful songs and dancing and at the end of the party I congratulated my friend and his bride and left.

After that I felt a little tired but I thought I had the flu. I didn’t care about it, and at two o’clock at night my temperature rose and I felt severe pain in my back. My whole body was in pain, I could hardly move and feel very weak.

Then I remembered that I was not wearing a mask at my friend’s wedding, so I suspected that what I was feeling from the pain were the symptoms of Corona (Covid-19).

So I immediately went to the hospital, I was alone and could not tell any of my family members what I was suffering from.

In the hospital, I was examined by the specialized doctor, and the doctor told me that there is a suspicion that you have been infected with the Corona virus (Covid-19), and some tests and x-rays must be done to confirm this matter.

I tried to be consistent, and went to the lab to do the tests and then to the x-ray room, and after I took the x-ray, I got dizzy. I fell to the ground and could not move, and the doctor and nurses rushed towards me to save me.

I did not feel anything after that, my health condition deteriorated very quickly and I was transferred to the intensive care room. I stayed in the intensive care unit 14 days.

It was proven by analyzes and x-rays that I was infected with the Corona virus (Covid-19), and the doctors and nurses took great care of me, until my health improved and I recovered completely from the disease.

I considered the day I got rid of this dangerous disease as the best day of my life and decided to celebrate that day every year.

The most beautiful day of my life was so amazing and wonderful. I still remember that wonderful feeling I had as soon as I saw the gift my father brought me.

I woke up to my mother’s voice asking me to go down because my father wanted me to do something important. I went to the living room where my father is standing and hiding a big box in it, and he told me what you think about opening this box to see what’s inside.

I can’t describe the feelings of happiness I had, I wish I could fly or jump higher to express how happy I am at this moment. This is my first pet and I loved it so much, I have never had any pet to be responsible for it and I can teach it some manners and enjoy playing with it.

I watched many movies on YouTube or TV, and I saw such a moment, but nothing really describes it as it should. This is a very wonderful gift, especially when you are of the right age. It was a really great gift.

Undoubtedly, there are situations or days that pass by us that make us appreciate the value of the things around us. The best day of my life when I miraculously survived a car accident.

Last year I was cycling in the roads around the park, which is close to my house, and decided to get out on the highway for a bit and try cruising among the cars.

Suddenly, a terrifyingly fast car appeared and I did not notice it, and the driver was talking on the mobile as well. I didn’t notice the car because it was coming from behind all I could hear was the sound of the brakes and I felt a collision from behind that made me jump in the air. After that, I learned that they were exposed to some dangers and accidents, so I felt grateful that I stuck to my decision and didn’t perform some dangerous games or dangerous movements.

How to Have the Best Day of Your Life (No Matter What Happens)

“Today is going to be the best day ever!”

Those are the first words out of my mouth every morning.

I’ve said them waking up from a great night’s sleep, when I had plans I was really looking forward to. I’ve also said them when I slept terribly and was anxious about something, or had a task coming up I flat didn’t want to do.

Nine short and simple words , but they profoundly change how I approach each day, helping recalibrate my mindset throughout the day.

Of course, simply saying it isn’t enough. Turning them from a promise to myself into reality every day, no matter what life throws at me, takes a system. A system I’m happy to share.

I thought I hated structure…I fought against it for most of my life. I hated being told what to do. I didn’t want to be like everyone else and thought structure and routine defined ‘everyone else.’

Looking back, I’m amazed how wrong I was for such a long time.

Routine and good habits weren’t the enemy, they were the solution.

I look back at my life thus far and realize the best days of my life weren’t necessarily the days something great or exciting happened – such as business or financial success. Rather, they were those days when I felt good about myself because I grew as a person; days when I grew mentally, physically, and spiritually; days when I connected with someone; days when I helped someone.

I also realize there were a lot of things I knew I should be doing. Things like exercising regularly, meditating, and reading. I found the mental fatigue caused by not doing those was way worse than any physical fatigue ever could be. Amazingly, I’ve found it’s much harder NOT to do these things than it was to actually do them.

I have goals in my life; for the person I want to be; for what I want to accomplish and give back to this world. The only way I could meet these goals was to develop a Daily Routine that would get me to my physical, emotional, and spiritual peak each day, and keep me there. That’s how I’d have the best day of my life every day.

Why is a daily routine so important?

A recent study conducted by the American Psychological Association found that developing good habits is more important to meeting goals than self-control. It turns out we’re just as likely to default to positive habits, such as eating a healthy breakfast or going to the gym, as we are to self-sabotage. This research shows lack of control doesn’t automatically mean indulgence or hedonism. For better or worse, it’s our underlying routine that matters.

So, the central question for behavior change efforts should be, how can you form healthy, productive habits? What we know about habit formation is that you want to make the desired behavior easy to do, so you repeat it until it becomes part of your routine.

As a result, I’ve now built my life around structure. I need this structure to keep functioning at the highest level possible on all three planes of existence – mind, body, and soul . I need it to make myself a better person. I need it so I constantly see opportunity and view problems as ‘situations.’ In short, I need it so I can be free.

My structure is ever-evolving, as I periodically review, assess, and adjust it.

MY DAILY ROUTINE

Want to have the best day of your life every day, no matter what? Here’s a general overview of what I do each day to keep myself at my peak, so I truly enjoy each day, even when the s&*t hits the proverbial fan, and trust me, it has on many days.

Good morning

1) Wake Up Early

I wake up at 5 AM each week-day morning and at 6 AM on weekends. Waking up early is key to starting my day right and sticking to the rest of my Daily Routine.

Why? Many successful people are early risers, and there are many benefits to waking up early. Still not ready to commit? My favorite explanation of the befits of being an early riser came from Buffer’s Joel Gascoigne :

“If I choose to get up early and do amazing things in those quiet hours, that’s when I feel like I’m grabbing hold of my life and controlling where I go.”

2) Immediately Get in a Positive Frame of Mind

I say this simple sentence out loud, “ This will be the best day ever! ” saying it like I mean it.

Why? My mind tries telling me all the things that are WRONG, but through positive thinking, I overcome it. According to the Mayo Clinic , positive thinking helps manage stress and even improves your health.

3) Give Thanks and Get out of Self

I get on my knees, say thanks, and ask for help and guidance. I repeat another simple sentence, “ Love, serve, and remember. Remember what? Remember to love and serve. ”

Why? It gets me out of my own head and connected to the Universe. I love this explanation about prayer from Hugh Macleod :

“People say prayers, not just because we’re hoping to get an omnipotent deity to intervene directly on our behalf, but because it also helps us concentrate our minds on the stuff that actually matters. “Whether we believe or don’t believe in God or Buddha or the grey-bearded sky fairy, art is still very good for helping us to “pray” to the deepest part of our own selves, of our own lives.”

4) Nourish Your Body

I drink a full glass of cold water and eat a piece of fruit.

Why? Not only does it help cleanse and rehydrate me, it also helps me wake up. I’m doing something good for my body right away.

Up to 60% of the human body is water, and even if you’re dehydrated, you may not feel thirsty. Having a glass of water first thing helps you avoid health issues caused by dehydration.

5) Fill Your Mind with Good Stuff

I read something spiritual via apps on my phone. Each of these contains a daily reading that helps center and inspire me. Most times, I just glance at them and since my brain isn’t fully awake yet, I don’t fully grasp the reading. Still, there’s always something that resonates, even if only a word or a sentence.

Why?  According to  Barb Schmidt , reading for inspiration shines light on the path to peace:

“Just as the food we eat nourishes and strengthens the body, the books we read for inspiration nourish and enrich the mind. I thrive in my life and feed my soul with the reading I do daily .”

6) Meditate

I didn’t think meditation was possible for a person like me. I was way too busy, had too much going on in my mind, and wasn’t really very spiritual. Then I realized I had so many preconceived notions about meditation that I simply had to try it. I can honestly say meditation changed my life. I meditate 11 minutes each morning without fail. It doesn’t matter where I am or what’s going on around me, I simply sit and meditate.

Why? There are so many mental and health benefits of meditation , but it goes even beyond the things you can see. As Leo Babauta from Zen Habits puts it:

“ Actually, some of the best benefits of meditation are hard to define — you begin to understand yourself better, for example, and form a self-awareness level you’ve never had before. “ Most simply, sitting for just a few minutes of meditation is an oasis of calm and relaxation that we rarely find in our lives these days. And that, in itself, is enough .”

7) Write to Clear Your Mind and Receive Inspiration

When I first read about Juila Cameron’s Morning Pages , I thought she was crazy, along with anyone who did them. You want me to hand-write three pages every single morning? Are you nuts?! Today, I can’t imagine going a single day without doing my Morning Pages. They are as essential to me as anything else in my life.

Why? My Morning Pages help clear my mind and clarify my dreams, goals, ideas, and inspirations.

These pages are about anything and everything that crosses your mind – and they are for your eyes only. Morning Pages provoke, clarify, comfort, cajole, prioritize, and synchronize the day at hand. Do not over-think your Morning Pages. Just write three pages of anything today, then three more pages tomorrow, then three more every day after.

Gratitude

8) Practice Gratitude

I used to think about all the unfair things in my life. All the bad people, bad luck, and all the things that were wrong. Then, to counter that, I started writing out gratitude lists each day, and it cultivated an attitude of gratitude in my life.

Why? I like to think of gratitude as an action word. If I don’t consciously take time to be aware of all the things I’m grateful for each day, it’s easy to slip back into negative thinking.

The reality is this; especially in this country, we have much to be grateful for each day, no matter what’s going on. Practice gratitude and it will change how you see the world.

9) Say Positive Affirmations and Incantations Out Loud

I recite some positive affirmations and incantations, some I learned from others, and some I created, based on my own personal goals, desires, and reminders.

Why? Affirmations help you define your focus for the things you want to see in your life. They keep you focused on your goals, desires, and dreams. Most importantly, positive affirmations allow you to deliberately train and re-program your subconscious mind.

10) Have a Plan for the Day

I write out a plan for the day, which consists of up to six important tasks I want to accomplish that day and a loose schedule for when I’ll work on them (based on my 40 Pomodoro Workweek system ). Then, I write out why I want to accomplish them, and what specific actions I need to take to accomplish them.

Why? A daily action plan allows you to focus on what’s important and, above all, provides you a sense of control you need to stifle any hint of anxiety or stress.

11) Visualize Success

I put on an inspirational song or watch a motivating video and sit in visualization for a few minutes. I visualize the day unfolding positively, and then go further into the future, picturing where and who I want to be.

Why? As Bo Bennet puts it, “ Visualization is daydreaming with a purpose .” One of the keys to achieving your goals is your ability to visualize it and use visualization techniques more effectively.

12) Take a Walk

Every morning I walk my dog to Central Park. It gets my blood flowing and gives my mind a change of scenery. I connect with him, other people, and nature (yes, we have nature here in New York City :)) Don’t have a dog or a park? That’s fine, just move.  I once heard a saying “ Move a muscle, change a thought .” How true.

Why? As you can imagine, there are lots of health benefits to walking every day, but beyond that, walking helps boost your creativity , it’s a great way to come up with lots of ideas each day. Spending as little as five minutes walking in a natural setting results in large improvements in self-esteem and mood.

13) Read a Chapter of a Book

I always wanted to read more, but reading books seemed so overwhelming – they were soooooo long. So I came up with an easy solution to make it more manageable and help me read more. I simply read one chapter of one book each day. It doesn’t even have to be the same book (I’m currently reading a few different books at the same time based on my mood).

Why? As Glen Stansberry put it “ I’ve found that no matter what I read, the act of reading every day has helped me in nearly every aspect of my life .” Reading helps reduce stress, improves your analytical thinking, inspires you and can even help you prioritize your goals.

14) Talk to Someone You Trust Completely

I call my mentor every day. Most days, I just leave him a message. Still, I make the call every single day, no matter what. That simple act of accountability helps me in so many ways.

Why? Having a connection with someone that you can truly be honest with allows you to open up and feel truly ‘real.’ Beyond that, just knowing I’ll be reporting to him makes it more likely I’ll stay on track with my commitments to myself.

15) Spend Quality Time with Loved Ones

Why? This one goes at the top of the list of the things that no one wants to regret when they’re older . I spent the first years of my daughter’s life never really present, and at the end of the day, there’s nothing more important to me than being there for the people I love.

16) Show Appreciation

I do something nice for my wife each day. I make a conscious effort to do this because it’s easy to get wrapped up in a busy day and just think of all of the stuff I have going on (me! me! me!). So I make sure I do something to show her how important she is to me. It doesn’t have to be something earth-shaking. It could be as simple as a quick text or doing something around the house without her asking me.

Why? One of the greatest benefits of expressing appreciation is that it allows us to see others more fully. The more appreciation we express, the more we are getting out of self , the better we feel.

17) Exercise

Technically this one isn’t every day, since I exercise and stretch “only” five times a week.  However, it’s something I’ve built into my weekly routine that I carry out on an almost-daily basis. I know that each week I’ll exercise five times no matter what. I give myself two rest days to recover and focus more on other areas, even if those are simply getting in some down time to relax.

Why? I have a lot of energy, and if I don’t channel it right, it can work against me. Exercise helps me have more of the right kind of energy. It makes me feel better about myself and so much more. For some, it’s beyond life changing .

18) Come Up with Ideas

Each day I come up with 10 ideas. This was something I originally learned from James Altucher and Ari Meisel , and then refined into my own system .

Why? When you exercise your ideation and creativity muscle daily, you strengthen it. You clear up the mental clutter caused by ideas that may get stuck in your head. You may even come up with such a killer idea that will make you a ton of money, or even better, make a huge difference in the world.

Each night I floss. This one seems like it shouldn’t even be on a list like this right? Well, the simple act of flossing taught me discipline and consistency. It was hard at first and I’d miss a day here or three there. Then I realized I felt badly about that, and spent more time thinking about not flossing than it would have taken me to just floss.

Why? It’s a great way to work on forming small, positive habits. If you need to, you can even start with flossing one tooth per day and work up from there.

20) Review Your Day

Ben Franklin

Why? It’s easy to get caught in the blur of a day and not reflect on where you are right now. Journaling at night allows you to do this. Benjamin Franklin used to ask himself this simple question each night:

“ What good have I done today? ”

If you know you’ll owe yourself an answer to that question at the end of the day, don’t you think that will help you make better choices during the day?

21) Nighttime Affirmations

I reaffirm my goals and recite a couple of nighttime affirmations that prepare me to wake up early the following morning, no matter how much sleep I get or what’s on my mind.

Why? Nighttime affirmations put your mind in a positive state right before you go to sleep. They give you a feeling of confidence and clarity , while setting the tone for your next morning.

22) Say Thanks

I get on my knees and give thanks for the day’s gifts and everything in my life.

Why? In the words of Mesiter Echkart:

“ If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, ‘thank you,’ that would suffice. ”

Whether you believe in a higher power or not, experiencing gratitude for what you do have helps you concentrate on the positive. This doesn’t mean you don’t strive to improve yourself and the world around you. You just accept that for right now, things are fine as they are, but you can always make them even better.

Yeah But Do You Do Anything Else With Your Life?!

In between all of this, I work , I relax, and I do lots of other things. The healthier I am, mind, body, and soul, the more productive I am. The more creative I am, the more efficient I become. This Daily Routine has allowed me to be my most creative, efficient, and effective self.

Are you ready to take on the challenge, and assert for yourself each day that “Today will be the best day ever!” ? If you are, you’ll need to set up your own support structure, to keep that all-important promise to yourself.

Seriously though, I have been struggling with sticking to any kind of routine for so long. I start something but then I give up after a few days. It’s pretty frustrating.

Where should I start? Any advice on how to stick to good habits?

Start small. Pick something that’s in line with your overall goals in life and start there.

Do you want to become healthier? Commit to walking each day is a great (even if it’s just 5 to 10 minutes.)

Want to be more mindful and reduce stress? Commit to meditating for 1 minute each day.

By starting small you are able to feel good about doing something good for yourself without it being overwhelming. A lot of the habit failure seems to come from going big right from the beginning and then burning out and giving up.

This is great stuff. While it’s so simple, the glass of water and piece of fruit thing in the morning is awesome! I have a question. How do you handle you Daily Routine and the rest of the day if you don’t get enough sleep? Sometimes I don’t fall asleep until really late for no reason or I wake up extremely early, and both affect my daily productivity, especially after a few hours of being awake.

The short answer is: I plow through the day. That’s the beauty of having a Daily Routine, you know exactly what you need to do and you do it (regardless of how you feel). And then I make sure to try to get a good night sleep that night 🙂

Love this, Chris! All very tactical things that can TOTALLY be done. I have found over the years that the more TV I consume, the less productive I am. The DVR is the best/worst thing that ever happened to my family. We only have one TV in our house, but it can be very distracting from “real life.” Do you watch anything and, if so, what? how much? etc. Thanks for sharing this with all of us…you are an inspiration!

We do have TV (we actually still have cable as well as Netflix & Hulu) but I don’t really watch much TV and when I do it will be usually be Pardon the Interruption (on DVR) when I am eating lunch sometimes or I’ll watch some show that I’ve seen before (Office reruns or some mindlesssssss reality show) if I’m doing some “work” at night that doesn’t really require much concentration. It’s probably not the best but it can be a good way to decompress a bit.

I’d say that on average, I watch about 2 to 3 hours of TV per week.

These can be really tricky because they are inevitably going to take us out of our schedule and thus our routine so it’s important to realize that upfront and be gentle on yourself while still trying to stick to a plan.

One of the most important parts of this for me is waking up early (even on vacation) so that I can have time to get a lot of the essential stuff done and feel good for the rest of the day.

Since I know I work out 5 times per week, I simply stick to that. Even if it’s a shorter workout or simply going for a run or doing something like the 7 Minute Workout ( http://www.7-min.com/ ) if there’s no gym and it’s raining.

I appreciated this post and I will try a few items on your list! Do you have any tips for people with erratic and unpredictable work schedules? For example, what if you’re a medical resident and your schedule changes every 10 weeks, or if you’re in a job where you are required to be on call all of the time?

I would suggest starting small. What are one (or two things) that you can start doing each day?

Make sure they are things that can be done at anytime of the day and don’t have to many conditions on them (so something like waking up at 5am probably wouldn’t be possible due to your changing schedule).

And then just do them each day. Again, by starting small you set yourself up for success and then can easily add on more things.

Excellent post Chris. I’m a massive fan of daily routines, and although mine starts an hour later than yours, at 6am, there are a lot of similarities. I’ve recently added ‘Morning Pages’ to my routine, but need to transition from entering it via the keyboard to writing it out long hand as I understand the benefits and totally agree with your 60mph analogy. Having a clear routine is a recent lifestyle change for me, but in the two years since I adopted a more structured approach to my day I’ve felt better, stronger, healthier and more positive, so if anyone is sat on the fence regarding this I can highly recommend Chris’s approach. I stumbled upon your article of how to become a morning person three weeks ago. I’ve always been the average lazy, get up and roll out of bed into work. Something from your article inspired me to start trying to get up earlier. So after reading it on a monday night, i set my alarm for 6:30 instead of 7:30, and started to get up early at 6:30 for that week, 6:00 the following week and now I wake up at 5:30. (almost at the target!!!) I have slowly been building my routine from when I wake up.

So far I have a few really great positive things on there, which are slowly growing – You are SO right in saying that small positives being hammered out day by day is better than big change!

However – I am not a spiritual person, I do not believe in God and I don’t enjoy reading per say. Is there anything you could suggest for me to add to my daily routine?

I can understand that keeping a daily routine has many benefits but in my specific case having been very disciplined, I am working toward relaxing and being more spontaneous. Here’s my morning routine: 1. My one page of daily affirmations (repeated afternoon and evening). 2. 10-15 minutes of meditation. 3. A glass of cold water. 4. Noting three things I’m grateful for, three things I’d like to have done by the end of the day, and a daily confirmation of any sort. 5. Reading 2-3 pages of Deepak Chopra’s “Creating Affluence”. Ideally, I get up around 6 a.m.. And ideally, I also read one chapter of a book as my first task for the day. So I kinda do most of the things on your list. 🙂 And it all works like a charm.

I notice a lot of what you champion are techniques to defeat what some of your readers may perceive as ‘intrusions’ necessarily designed into modern day’s requisite technologies. Your techniques seem geared toward taking charge of our place in today, and then managing the devices we use as a by-product. From what others have written here I can see many are unaware of what it is like to have even a hour to focus on a single task… you’ve started me on my way by making me grateful already for having even that in my daily work.

Question: is there a growth step or inspiration you have trained yourself revert to on the harder days, especially in the mornings? I suffer from anxiety etc, and seem to only be able to make it to the next bad mood (about 4 weeks) before I defeat myself and have to rebuild.

You Can Make Any Day the Best Day of the Year

On New Year’s Eves when I was in my late 20s, I would ask my friends to reflect on our best days of the year, the times when we had the most fun, felt the most grateful or were happiest.

Sometimes they were the days we expected. Parties, vacations, weddings. But more often, the real best days in hindsight weren’t the obvious ones. They were marked by the ordinary: a long conversation with a friend when I realized I wasn’t the only one who felt the way I did. That time we were going to miss the train so we sprinted to the point of near collapse — and made it. Staggering home with a Christmas tree so big, it barely fit through the door.

The planned punctuations to life — holidays, job promotions, family milestones — often disappoint. New Year’s Eve is useless ; Thanksgiving ends up being memorable not for the meal but for the next-day deliberations over how many ways you can eat a leftover turkey. The polished moments that ended up on Instagram weren’t what I remembered at the end of the year, either. I rarely had any photos at all of the best days. I was too busy living them.

The problem with these best days was they went by without me realizing how special they were. Unmarked by ceremony and undocumented for posterity, they streamed together in my mind as a blur.

I wondered, could I find a way to know when the best days were coming and really feel them as they happened? So I tried declaring a best day in advance. Even if it felt ridiculous, this effort to make the ordinary feel extraordinary usually worked. Mundane experiences felt special when I marked them as such. Staying up talking in a living room until too late at night or going for a weekend run through a park in the sunshine felt as wonderful as I had hoped it would.

Designating a regular night as a best night helped me claim that moment. I no longer had to battle my nostalgia for ownership of my experiences. Now that I was looking for them, I caught them before they became memories.

Marking experiences this way is one key to happiness, said Dr. Robert Waldinger, a psychiatrist, Zen priest and the director of the Harvard Happiness Study .

“Often we’ll remember the things that are more emotionally loaded as opposed to the neutral, the flat, the boring,” Dr. Waldinger told me. “That’s why you probably can’t remember what you had for dinner last Monday night — unless it was something special. That’s because our brains have to screen out a whole bunch of stuff. So when we look back, we tend to remember the things that were more emotional.”

When I think about it, it’s clear that there will be experiences from this pandemic that I will miss or feel nostalgic for as well: a blissfully vacant calendar; meandering walking catch-ups with friends; smiling at neighbors after months of waving from across the street. Not the tedium or the dread, of course, but the beauty we found in the quiet.

And lately I’ve realized that a lot of what made me unhappy during the pandemic made me unhappy beforehand, too. The loneliness that I worried at times might become a permanent feature of adulthood, for example, or the way the days and years can stretch together. The excuses I made as I waited for something to change.

We can’t wait anymore. The stress we feel now isn’t going to magically disappear, just as it never would have before the pandemic. The world has always been a shambles. There’s only one thing we can control: How are we going to live in it?

Why not try to have a best day right now, maybe even tonight? It certainly beats waiting until the world is fixed. And a moment of happiness doesn’t stop us from pushing for the worst of the world to change. On the contrary, as Dr. Waldinger told me, savoring positive moments can serve as fuel to create more of them.

So I’m going to go back to my practice of declaring a best day in advance. I’ll start by declaring today or tomorrow or next Monday one of the best days of 2021. It all began on a warm Saturday afternoon at the end of September while I was sitting with my family watching my brother play in a baseball game. I get a phone call from a phone number that I do not recognize. After wondering who is calling for a while, I answer it. The man on the phone says that he is the manager at Frank's Pizza and that he would like to offer me a job as a busser on Tuesday and Wednesday if I am interested. I told him yes, that I am interested and that I can start this Tuesday at 4:00 pm. After getting off the phone, I was feeling nervous. I was apprehensive because I had never had a job before and I was worried that I would not like it or I would not be good at it.

After a few days of patiently waiting, Tuesday was finally here. I went to school that day and told everyone that I got a job at Frank's Pizza. I then went home from school at 2:20 and waited for my dad to come home at 4:00, so he could drive me to work. While I was waiting, I changed my clothes into a soft pink hoodie, black leggings and red sneakers. I also quickly ate a chocolate chip granola bar. My dad finally came home at about 3:45 and drove me there. The drive took about five minutes. After five minutes, we finally got there and we parked the car in front of the restaurant and my dad came with me inside since I was feeling a little nervous to walk in alone. Then after talking to the manager for a little, my dad told me goodbye and left.

I then started meeting everyone there and they showed me where everything was. This one girl who looked a little older than me named Kathryn showed me how to clock in and told me that I should do this every time I work, as soon as I get in. She then took me to the back of the kitchen and got me a black short sleeved shirt that said Frank's Pizza on it to wear and she also told me that next time I will have to have black non-slip sneakers. Kathryn then took me back to the front of the restaurant where the server station is located and showed me where the ice and lettuce are and told me that whenever either the ice and lettuce run out to go to the kitchen and get more. She then introduced me to all the servers that were working there that day. While she was introducing me to everyone, there was a big party of about 20 in the dining room getting ready to leave. They started to clean up and told me to help them. They showed me where all the used plates go. After we finished cleaning the table, they told me to place four menus and wraps of silverware on the table. After that, Kathryn showed me how to greet and seat all the customers that walk in. She told me to seat them and then write the table number on the chart and then tell the server that he or she has that table. After that, it was time for Kathryn to go home. She said bye to me and that she would see me tomorrow.

After Kathryn left, all the other servers began talking to me and asking me questions such as where I go to school, what grade I am in and how old I am. I replied with: I go to Easton High School, I am in the eleventh grade and I am 16 years old. After we talked for a little more, some customers were leaving, so I went to the tables and started cleaning all of them. When I went to go clean one of the tables, a server followed me there and told me that I cannot touch any of the glasses with alcohol in them since I was not eighteen years old yet. He told me just to let him or someone know to come pick up the glasses for me. After I finished cleaning all the tables I went back to where all the servers were standing. One of them told me if I am ever hungry or thirsty I could grab a drink or a slice of pizza to eat. He saw that I still looked nervous and was not talking to anyone so he told me not to be shy and that everyone who works there is really nice. After cleaning a bunch of more tables, it was finally almost time to go home. As soon as 8:30 hit, all the servers began to give me a small portion of tips they made that night. I was really surprised because I did not know I was going to be making tips as a busser. I counted all my money and it was about $20. I was so happy to be going home with a little money. All the servers there told me that I did a very good job and that they would see me tomorrow. After that, I went outside and my dad's silver minivan was out in the parking lot. I got in the car and told him about the great day I had. He said that he was so happy and proud of me.

Even though I was nervous at first, I ended up having a great day and could not wait to go back the next day. The next day at school, I told all my friends about the great day I had. I will always remember this day because it was my first job and it will always remind me that even though I am nervous to do something, I should do it anyway, because I might end up having a lot of fun doing it.
