Why Should You Use a Free Essay Checker?
The simple answer? Good grammar is necessary, but it’s not easy. You've already done countless hours of research to write the essay. You don’t want to spend countless hours correcting it, too.
You'll get a better grade
Good grammar or its absence can determine if you get a good grade or a failing one. Impress your lecturer not just with how grammatically sound your writing is, but how clear it is and how it flows.
You'll save time
Essay writing can be a long and tedious process. ProWritingAid's essay checker saves you the hassle by acting as the first line of defense against pesky grammar issues.
You'll become a better writer
Essay writing is a particular skill and one that becomes better with practice. Every time you run your essay through ProWritingAid’s essay corrector, you get to see what your common mistakes are and how to fix them.
Good Writing = Good Grades
It’s already hard to know what to write in an essay. Don’t let grammar mistakes hinder your writing and prevent you from getting a good grade. ProWritingAid’s essay checker will help you write your best essay yet. Since the checker is powered by AI, using it means that grammar errors don’t stand a chance. Give your professors something to look forward to reading with clear, concise, and professional writing.
How Does ProWritingAid’s Essay Checker Work?
Your goal in essay writing is to convey your message as best as possible. ProWritingAid's essay checker is the first step towards doing this.
Get Rid of Spelling Errors
ProWritingAid’s essay checker will show you what it thinks are spelling errors and present you with possible corrections. If a word is flagged and it’s actually spelt correctly you can always choose to ignore the suggestion.
Fix Grammar Errors
Professors aren’t fans of poor grammar because it interrupts your message and makes your essay hard to understand. ProWritingAid will run a grammar check on your paper to ensure that your message is precise and is being communicated the way you intended.
Get Rid of Punctuation Mistakes
A missing period or comma here and there may not seem that serious, but you’ll lose marks for punctuation errors. Run ProWritingAid’s paper checker to use the correct punctuation marks every time and elevate your writing.
Improve Readability
Make sure that in the grand scheme your language is not too complicated. The essay checker's built in readability report will show if your essay is easy or hard to read. It specifically zones in on paragraphs that might be difficult to read so you can review them.
What Else Can the Essay Checker Do?
The editing tool analyzes your text and highlights a variety of key writing issues, such as overused words, incohesive sentence structures, punctuation issues, repeated phrases, and inconsistencies.
You don’t need to drown your essay in words just to meet the word count. ProWritingAid’s essay checker will help to make your words more effective. You'll get to construct your arguments and make sure that every word you use builds towards a meaningful conclusion.
Transition words help to organize your ideas by showing the relationship between them. The essay checker has a built in Transition report that highlights and shows the percentage of transitions used in your essay. Use the results to add transitions where necessary.
An engaging essay has sentences of varying lengths. Don’t bore your professor with long, rambling sentences. The essay checker will show you where you need to break long sentences into shorter sentences, or add more sentence length variation.
Generally, in scholarly writing, with its emphasis on precision and clarity, the active voice is preferred. However, the passive voice is acceptable in some instances. When you run your essay through ProWritingAid’s essay checker, you get feedback on whether you 'r e using the passive or active voice to convey your idea.
There are academic specific power verbs like appraise , investigate , debunk , support , etc., that can add more impact to your argument by giving a more positive and confident tone. The essay checker will check your writing for power verbs and notify you if you have less than three throughout your essay.
It's easy to get attached to certain phrases and use them as crutches in your essays but this gives the impression of boring and repetitive writing. The essay checker will highlight your repeats and suggest contextually relevant alternatives.
Gain access to in-house blog reports on citations, how to write a thesis statement, how to write a conclusion, and more. Venture into a world of resources specific to your academic needs.

"Me Talk Pretty One Day"
by David Sedaris
Comedian and author David Sedaris wrote the memoir essay “Me Talk Pretty One Day” about his time living in Paris to learn the French language. While matriculating as a middle-aged man has its benefits—"No one will ever again card me for a drink or demand that I weave a floor mat out of newspapers"—it doesn't spare him, or any of his peers, from the abuse of their teacher. Sedaris recounts carrying a special brand of insecurity, tackling the complexity of language and the thrill of being a humorist going toe-to-toe with a stern and scathing professeure .

"The Price of Black Ambition"
by Roxane Gay
In “The Price of Black Ambition,” Roxane Gay interweaves a timeline of her struggles and successes with a frank discussion on the sociopolitical racism inherent in the United States. She speaks on the fact that children of color are often given an inflated sense of “ambition” at a young age, as they must work twice as hard with half as much to achieve opportunities that are more carelessly given to their white peers. And, despite the exceptional amounts of work people of color put in to move forward in life, their efforts are regularly regarded as less than—their presence in “white” circles is considered a fluke or consequence of required diversity. She refers to her ambition as a hunger that can never be satisfied in the current status quo of America.
Gay is most notable for her essay collection Bad Feminist , as well as her fiction novel An Untamed State .

College textbooks can be pricey. minnesota state system is offering more for free..
Brian Welch estimates he's saved about $2,500 on his college costs by choosing classes that offer free materials.
"The cost savings had a big impact on my life," Welch said, adding that it left him with more money to buy groceries and gas or to purchase supplies for other classes that required traditional textbooks.
Welch, a senior at St. Cloud State University, is one of more than 85,000 students in the Minnesota State system of colleges and universities who has taken a class that relies on free materials, also called open educational resources. System leaders estimate those students have saved a combined $8.5 million over the past decade and are hopeful that the classes are starting to slowly chip away at disparities in higher education.
System data show first-generation college students, low-income students and students of color are slightly more likely to enroll in classes that offer the free materials.
"For that access piece, we've eliminated the opportunity gap," said Kim Lynch, the system's associate vice chancellor for educational development and technology.
Open educational resources — the free materials — look a little different for each class. Sometimes, a professor might ask a librarian to help ensure students can borrow classic pieces of literature. Sometimes, it's an e-book or a PDF. Sometimes, it involves an interactive game, like a crossword puzzle designed to help cement students' knowledge of key concepts.
"It's a huge paradigm shift," said Karen Pikula, a psychology instructor at Central Lakes College who was among the first in the system to start using the free materials.
Students typically are expected to buy their own textbooks before classes start. But Pikula said research shows about two-thirds of students don't have access to materials in the first three weeks of class, sometimes because they're waiting on student loans or military benefits to come through.
"They're trying to do homework with no resources," she said. "That is another beautiful thing of [open educational resources] is students have access the first day of class."
Pikula once thought the pricey commercial textbooks available for her psychology classes were among the best. Some came with access to videos that included case studies that gave her students another perspective on how a patient or a client might act. The books also cost about $275 each.
Then Pikula attended a training session where someone talked about how open educational resources allow instructors to customize their course with materials that are more relevant or better reflect the diversity of their students. She spent a weekend comparing the textbook she was using to other materials that were available for free and could be edited. She was quickly sold on the concept.
Pikula now spends part of her time teaching other faculty members how to develop and use free materials. Some campuses have even gone so far as to offer what they call Z-degrees, or entire programs that guarantee students will be able to graduate without having to buy textbooks.
Lynch said 10 colleges in the system now offer Z-degrees, and another 15 schools are in the process of creating the programs. That includes three universities, which offer four-year programs as opposed to two-year ones. One of the most common Z-degrees is an associates degree that can count toward general education requirements if students want to continue their studies.
"We're making it more possible for them to get that degree," Lynch said.

2024 March Madness live stream: NCAA Tournament TV schedule, watch Elite Eight streaming online Saturday
Everything you need to know and how to watch saturday's elite eight action in the 2024 ncaa tournament.
We are getting closer to the final stages of the 2024 NCAA Tournament and after starting with 68 teams 13 days ago, there are just eight teams remaining, after 60 have been eliminated and by the end of Saturday night, two teams will have their tickets punched to the Final Four in Glendale, Arizona. The East Regional Final and West Regional Final will command the attention of the college basketball world in primetime, filling out the left side of the bracket and setting up one of the two matchups for next weekend's national semifinal.
Up first will be No. 1 UConn taking on No. 3 Illinois in the East Regional final from Boston (6:09 p.m. ET, TBS and March Madness Live ), where the Huskies have carried over the dominance from last year's six-game title march into their 2024 campaign to repeat. But in Illinois the reigning champs get not only their toughest foe of the tournament in 2024, but one with a higher offensive rating than any team in the country.
Then the back end of the doubleheader will feature the unlikely matchup of No. 4 Alabama against No. 6 Clemson in the West Regional final from Los Angeles (8:49 p.m. ET, TBS and March Madness Live ), with both teams surging into the weekend after upsetting the top two seeds in the region on Thursday night. All the Hollywood scripts for a reunion of North Carolina and Arizona's Caleb Love in the Elite Eight were rewritten over the course of 80 minutes of basketball, and now a new storyline has emerged with these two schools who are used to competing against each other for championships in football and now hit the hardwood with a Final Four bid hanging in the balance.
This is the time when legacies are established and identities are forged. We play months of regular season basketball, but how we talk about the coaches, players and programs within the sport are defined by the results of single-elimination tournaments each March. A Final Four appearance is one of those benchmarks we always take note of, and Saturday night's games will provide that opportunity to two of this tournament's teams.
Let's take a look at some of the storylines to know for Saturday's Elite Eight matchups.
Who will win every college basketball game, and which favorites should be on upset alert? Visit SportsLine now to get picks and predictions for every college basketball game , all from a model that simulates every game 10,000 times.
UConn's dominance has the Huskies on an all-time run
The streak was more than extended after Thursday night's 82-52 win against No. 5 San Diego State , and now it's nine straight NCAA Tournament wins with each victory being by at least 13 points. The idea that Dan Hurley's group has been mowing down the tournament field since the very first game of last year's bracket checks out with how we're talking about the national title favorites, but when you put it in a historical context it's truly stunning what we're witnessing from the Huskies. The previous record for consecutive NCAA Tournament wins by double-digits was six, and that was only accomplished twice (1981-82 Indiana and 1954-55 La Salle ) in the tournament's history. UConn has not only matched that but now extended it by 50% and given the quality of play from the Huskies in this tournament would be surprising if they doubled up the previous record?
This is absurd @UConnMBB pic.twitter.com/FGAFz0FKaW — CBS Sports (@CBSSports) March 29, 2024
Illinois had its breakthrough, now what?
If there's a reason to believe that UConn's streak of double-digit victories is going to come to an end in the Elite Eight, it's that No. 3 Illinois presents arguably the toughest challenge to the Huskies' title hopes since facing Gonzaga , also a No. 3 seed at the time, in the Elite Eight last season. The Fighting Illini rate as the most efficient offense in the country and star guard Terrence Shannon Jr . is coming off a terrific performance with 29 points in the 72-69 win over No. 2 Iowa State in the Sweet 16. Illinois had not even reached the Sweet 16 since 2005 prior to this tournament, so there was some catharsis not only in breaking through but picking up a win in their first return to the second weekend. But now what? Unfortunately the history isn't great, as Illinois has just a 1-8 all-time record against top-two seeds in the NCAA Tournament, with the only win coming back in the 1989 Elite Eight.
Illinois is headed to the Elite 8 🔥 pic.twitter.com/15NC7dFMIh — CBS Sports College Basketball 🏀 (@CBSSportsCBB) March 29, 2024
Either Alabama or Clemson set to make program history
No. 4 seed Alabama is in the Elite Eight for the second-time ever and the first time since 2004, knocking on the door of the Crimson Tide's first-ever Final Four appearance. Clemson, too, has its own chance at making school history as the Tigers are in the Elite Eight for the first time since 1980, which was the program's only previous Elite Eight appearance. Clemson defeated Alabama earlier this season in the ACC-SEC challenge in a game in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, but that Crimson Tide team was not the same as the group that was led by Grant Nelson in a season-saving effort against North Carolina in the second half. Both teams defeated top-two seeds on Thursday night by digging deep, so Saturday's regional final — and program history — is likely going to be decided by who has enough left in the tank.

It’s Not You: Dating Apps Are Getting Worse
By Magdalene J. Taylor
Ms. Taylor is a writer covering sex and culture.
“The golden age of dating apps is over,” a friend told me at a bar on Super Bowl Sunday. As we waited for our drinks, she and another friend swiped through Bumble and Hinge, hunting for new faces and likes. Across the bar were two young men: phones out, apps open, clearly doing the exact same thing. Never did the duos meet.
What’s lamentable here isn’t only that dating apps have become the de facto medium through which single people meet. Since 2019, three in 10 U.S. adults have reported using them, with that figure rising to roughly six in 10 for Americans under 50 who have never been married. Not only are people not meeting partners in bars or any of the once normal in-person venues — they’re barely meeting them on the apps, either.
Maybe most of us just aren’t as hot as we used to be. Maybe it’s time our inflated egos got knocked down a notch. Maybe the market of people still willing to put themselves out there in an attempt to date has gotten smaller. Or maybe the apps have functionally, intentionally gotten worse, as have our romantic prospects. The more they fail to help us form relationships, the more we’re forced to keep swiping — and paying.
The internet, where so many of us spend so much of our time, has not been spared from the decline in quality that seems to plague so much of consumer life. This phenomenon was described by the writer Cory Doctorow in a November 2022 blog post and is sometimes called “platform decay”: Tech platforms like Amazon, Reddit and X have declined in quality as they’ve expanded. These sites initially hooked consumers by being almost too good to be true, attempting to become essential one-stop shops within their respective spaces while often charging nothing, thanks to low interest rates and free-flowing venture capital funding . Now that we’re all locked in and that capital has dried up, those initial hooks have been walked back — and there’s nowhere else to go.
This is precisely what is happening with dating apps now, too, with much more urgent consequences. What’s worsening isn’t just the technological experience of online dating but also our ability to form meaningful, lasting connections offline.
The collapse of dating apps’ usability can be blamed on the paid subscription model and the near-monopoly these apps have over the dating world. While dozens of sites exist, most 20-something daters use the big three: Tinder, Hinge and Bumble. (Older people often gravitate toward Match.com or eHarmony.) All three sites offer a “premium” version users must pay for — according to a study conducted by Morgan Stanley , around a quarter of people on dating apps use these services, averaging out at under $20 a month. The purpose, many believe, is to keep them as paid users for as long as possible. Even if we hate it, even if it’s a cycle of diminishing returns, there is no real alternative.
In the early heyday of Tinder, the only limits on whom you could potentially match with were location, gender and age preferences. You might not have gotten a like back from someone you perceived to be out of your league, but at least you had the chance to swipe right. Today, however, many apps have pooled the people you’d most like to match with into a separate category (such as Hinge’s “Standouts” section), often only accessible to those who pay for premium features. And even if you do decide to sign up for them, many people find the idea of someone paying to match with them to be off-putting anyway.
“If I don’t pay, I don’t date,” a friend in his 30s told me. He spends around $50 a month on premium dating app subscriptions and digital “roses” to grab the attention of potential matches. He’s gone on 65 dates over the last year, he said. None have stuck, so he keeps paying. “Back in the day, I never would have imagined paying for OKCupid,” he said.
Yet shares (Bumble’s stock price has fallen from about $75 to about $11 since its I.P.O.) and user growth have fallen , so the apps have more aggressively rolled out new premium models. In September 2023, Tinder released a $500 per month plan. But the economics of dating apps may not add up .
On Valentine’s Day this year, Match Group — which owns Tinder, Hinge, Match.com, OKCupid and many other dating apps — was sued in a proposed class action lawsuit asserting that the company gamifies its platforms “to transform users into gamblers locked in a search for psychological rewards that Match makes elusive on purpose.” This is in contrast to one of the group’s ad slogans that promotes Hinge as “designed to be deleted.”
People are reporting similar complaints across the apps — even when they aren’t taking the companies to court. Pew Research shows that over the last several years, the percentage of dating app users across demographics who feel dissatisfied with the apps has risen . Just under half of all users report feeling somewhat to very negative about online dating, with the highest rates coming from women and those who don’t pay for premium features. Notably, there is a gender divide: Women feel overwhelmed by messages, while men are underwhelmed by the lack thereof.
With seemingly increasing frequency, people are going to sites like TikTok , Reddit and X to complain about what they perceive to be a dwindling group of eligible people to meet on apps. Commonly, complaints are targeted toward these monthly premium fees, in contrast to the original free experience. Dating has always cost money, but there’s something uniquely galling about the way apps now function. Not only does it feel like the apps are the only way to meet someone, just getting in the door can also comes with a surcharge.
Perhaps dating apps once seemed too good to be true because they were. We never should have been exposed to what the apps originally provided: the sense that the dating pool is some unlimited, ever-increasing-in-quality well of people. Even if the apps are not systematically getting worse but rather you’ve just spent the last few years as a five thinking you should be paired with eights, the apps have nonetheless fundamentally skewed the dating world and our perception of it. We’ve distorted our understanding of how we’d organically pair up — and forgotten how to actually meet people in the process.
Our romantic lives are not products. They should not be subjected to monthly subscription fees, whether we’re the ones paying or we’re the ones people are paying for. Algorithmic torture may be happening everywhere, but the consequences of feeling like we are technologically restricted from finding the right partner are much heavier than, say, being duped into buying the wrong direct-to-consumer mattress. Dating apps treat people like commodities, and encourage us to treat others the same. We are not online shopping. We are looking for people we may potentially spend our lives with.
There is, however, some push toward a return to the real that could save us from this pattern. New in-person dating meet-up opportunities and the return of speed dating events suggests app fatigue is spreading. Maybe we’ll start meeting at bars again — rather than simply swiping through the apps while holding a drink.
Have you ditched dating apps for a new way to meet people, or are you still swiping left?

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — Kirsten Simms and Vivian Jungels scored the opening two goals and defending champion Wisconsin advanced to the women’s ice hockey championship game for the second straight season after a 3-1 victory over Colgate on Friday night in the Frozen Four.
The win by Wisconsin (35-5-0) sets up a rematch of the 2023 title game on Sunday with top seed Ohio State. The Badgers are seeking to become the first team to win back-to-back titles since Clarkson in 2018 — and notch the program’s eighth championship.
Colgate (32-7-1), which had won its last six games by a combined score of 27-4, was the only team in the Frozen Four that had not won a national championship. The only previous trip to the Frozen Four for the Raiders came in 2018 against Clarkson.
Simms, the WCHA player of the year, buried her 33rd goal of the season 11 minutes into the game to extend her points streak to seven-straight games. Jungels made it 2-0 midway through the third on a shot from the face-off dot that went under the glove of Kayle Osborne.
Kristýna Kaltounková pulled Colgate within 2-1 with 2:10 to play, but Laila Edwards sealed it with an empty-netter.
Wisconsin rolled into the NCAA Tournament after beating Ohio State in the WCHA championship game.
